We encountered a weird problem today, and I thought some of you might like to hear the solution. The underlying change was listed in the 7.4 changelog, so it's not a bug, but it may drive you buggy. The majority of our HPC cluster nodes run CentOS 7, though the exact patch levels vary from node to node. None is older than 7.3, but a few newer nodes were kickstarted right to 7.4. The problem was that our mounts of Isilon NFS exports were failing randomly among the nodes. Routing was fine. Network connectivity was fine. The short answer is that the default in 7.4, and I think in the nfs-utils-1.3.0-0.48.el7 package in particular, has changed. While NFS v4.0 was the default up to 7.3, the 7.4 protocols are subtly different: 1. Try NFS v4.1 first 2. Fail down to NFS v3 3. Fail down to NFS v2 The problem is that our Isilon works with NFS v4.0, not 4.1, but 4.0 is not in the fail-down path. The short-term answer is to specify nfsvers=4.0 in our autofs configuration files, which works like a charm. Like I said, this was an announced change, but the implications escaped us until now. yum-cron hourly errors

I receive messages like this from cron often. Not every hour, and not consistently between the servers running CentOS, but at least two per day. I've been having a lot of issues with video, for example. However, this one... I have a user with a Dell R730. I install kernel and kernel devel, and the rest of the full update, and rebooted. Nope. 100% kernel panic, right around the time it switches root. I even rebuilt the initramfs, nope. And speaking of kernel panics, has *anyone* ever considered that all the data dumped to the console during one results in NOT BEING ABLE TO READ ANYTHING BUT THE LAST 24 or less, mostly less, lines? mark, frustrated, removed that kernel

Flame war police

Hiya everyone, Is there a way to disable a thread that has degenerated into flaming? The recent "discussion" on /var/run descended into some quite nasty places and perhaps a lid should have been put on it. This seems to happen every few weeks and is somewhat embarrassing when I'm trying to persuade people of the "active and friendly Centos community" It was a shame that no one actually read past the belligerence his original post enough to come up with a solution. It was quite clearly a problem with third party packages not coming with SELinux policies. Cheers, Andrew

Location of grub.conf etc. with UEFI boot (CentOS 6)

Hi, What's the proper/normal way of setting up GRUB for a CentOS 6 installation that boots using UEFI? I've recently set up such a system, but for technical reasons I mentioned in an earlier post, I booted in "legacy" mode during installation, which meant I didn't get the correct UEFI boot configuration, and had to set it up subsequently "by hand". I've managed to get the system to start up, but I had to place grub.conf under "/EFI/redhat/" on the EFI partition; without it, the system only boots into the grub shell. Is this normal, or is GRUB supposed to be able to find grub.conf under /boot? If not, how are updates on kernel upgrade etc. supposed to get done? Do I need a symlink from /boot/grub/grub.conf to the EFI parition? And will grub-install help with some of this? I haven't dared to try it, as I'm afraid it may break everything because it assumes an "MBR" configuration, or something. Also, how is /boot supposed to be set up anyway? Will it still normally be configured as a separate partition? Yeah, I know, I could re-install in UEFI mode (as I think I know how now), but I'm hoping you will save me from the effort. I also have a workable system anyhow, but kernel upgrades could be an issue, and it's nice to know the "right" way of setting up. Thanks, -Toralf

How can I disable at-spi-bus-launcher

I have a laptop that hangs up on shutdown saying that at-spi-bus-launcher is still running. Since I have no use for at-spi-bus-launcher anyway, I would like to get rid of it, but attempting to remove the at-spi2-core rpm wants to remove 99% of my desktop as well. The only way that I can see to get rid of it is to make /usr/libexec/at-spi-bus-launcher non-executable, but that's a pretty horrible hack. yum security update issue

Hi all, I have used http://cefs.steve-meier.de/ plus https://github.com/vmfarms/generate_updateinfo to insert some security-information into my os-updates - mirror. This seems to work, but only partially. On my 7.4 test server, > yum --security -v check-update gives me dnsmasq, nss, nss-sysinit and nss-tools as the packages to install. The nss-packages are all of "severity = Important" But there are more of this type of packages, e.g. emacs. The centos-announce mails as well as the errata of Steve Meier as well as the generated updateinfo.xml all contain "CESA-2017:2771 Important CentOS 7 emacs Security Update" Just like the mentioned nss-packages, emacs is also labeled "severity = Important". But yum doesn't like it ;-( The output of > yum --security -v check-update tells me more, of course: --> 1:emacs-24.3-20.el7_4.x86_64 from os-updates excluded (updateinfo) Neither dnsmasq nor the nss-packages are listed, in particular not as excluded -? And at the end it says > Nothing matches emacs.x86_64 1:24.3-20.el7_4 from update Btw, "yum info emacs" lists the installed and wanted emacs versions correctly. What did I miss? Regards, Thomas

Lock-up during boot when Logitech unifying receiver is connected (UEFI problem?)

Hi, I've got a bit of an issue after I switched to a new laptop for my CentOS 6.9 installation: I'm using a Logitech cordless keyboard and mouse that communicate with the system via a so-called "unifying receiver". If this unit (a small USB thingummy) is connected when I try to boot the system, it locks up completely. This happens before the GRUB screen is displayed. The set-up otherwise works just fine, i.e. I notice no ill effects of connecting the receiver once the system is up-and-running. I did not not have this problem on my old laptop, which ran a more or less identical Linux configuration (I cloned the partition.) Something that's new, though, is that I now have GPT partitions and boot using UEFI, where the old PC used traditional BIOS. I also had a hard time installing in the first place because I got similar issues when trying to boot the installer as well as "stand-alone" tools like "parted" and "clonezilla" from USB sticks, and these seemed to be restricted to GPT and UEFI, too. (I didn't realise at the time that the unifying receiver was the problem, so I ended up installing via "legacy" boot.) Has anyone else seen this? Any suggestions? I can live with the problem, I guess, but having to unplug and reconnect the unit every time I boot is a bit annoying. I've tried connecting the unit to several different USB ports, with the same result. I've also searched for firmware updates, but didn't find anything. TIA, - Toralf

Small GRUB screen (menu/splash image)

Hi, After moving my CentOS 6 installation over to a new PC, the GRUB start-up screen looks a bit strange. On the old machine, the menu area and splash image would cover the entire screen, but now they occupy only a small rectangle in its centre. I think what happens is that the max resolution of the graphics card/monitor combo is enabled even at this early stage, but GRUB assumes a 640x480 display. Is there any way I can change the resolution so that the GRUB screen covers the entire display? I couldn't find anything related to this in the documentation, or when searching the web, or actually, the topic is mentioned a few places, but they all refer to GRUB 2, and CentOS 6 of course has (a patched version of) 0.97. Weird bandwith behaviour (download throughput) on CentOS based gateway

Hi. I have a company gateway that is connected to a 30/30 Fiber connection, network termination point is a MRV OS-904. It acts as a firewall/router for the DMZ/hosts/lans behind. Software: CentOS 6.9, bare minimum install, all latest patches. Hardware: Xeon CPU, Intel server MB with two Intel PRO 1000 (e1000, e1000e) network cards, adaptec RAID, 8GB RAM On the hosts/lan behind I can happily achieve 28.8 mbs - it seems it's being capped at that speed by the provider. However, on the host itself I cannot get passed 820k/s max, even if I switch off iptables and anything else that could interfere with the download/upload bandwidth. I have no idea why this is the case - It only matters when I need to "yum update" as the updates take 4 times longer than on the CentOS DMZ hosts behind it - but yes, its rather annoying! Samba won't start on Centos 7.3.1611

New CentOS/RHEL group on Facebook

Hi, There are currently two competing CentOS groups on Facebook. The "main" group is managed by a small group of autocrats with very unilateral communication skills. The other one is not managed at all, judged by the amount of non-CentOS-related stuff published there (Ubuntu tutorials, Windows games, cheap Ray-Ban sunglasses). I was a bit frustrated by this state of things, the more so since I've successfully managed the Slackware Linux Facebook group for a couple of years, regulating publications, keeping folks on topic and banning the odd spammer. So I decided to do the same thing I would do in a software development context. Fork the project and create a different CentOS/RHEL Facebook group. The goal of this group would simply be to provide a no-nonsense discussion platform for all the CentOS and Red Hat Enterprise Linux users out there. Publications would be strictly CentOS/RHEL-centered, but on the other hand, you'd be free to share your CentOS-related blog posts, tutorials and documentation without getting flamed or banned by an admin. Intel turbo mode

Hi, is there a way in Centos to find out if the Intel turbo mode will be used? Using the 'stress' utility and checking the frequency with cpupower tells me that a CPU is running at it´s maximum frequency as reported by cpupower --- and this frequency is less than the frequency it would run at if it used the turbo mode. All the other CPUs are at their minimum frequency. I have verified that turbo mode is enabled in the BIOS. Is cpupower unable to report frequencies used in turbo mode despite it always says it gets its information from the hardware? -- "Didn't work" is an error.

SpamAssassin vs. SELinux

Hi, I just installed SpamAssassin on two servers running CentOS 7 and Postfix. One is my sandbox server for experimenting, the other one is the server that hosts my company's web site, blog, mail, etc. So far, SpamAssassin seems to work as expected. I sent a test mail, which was duly flagges as [SPAM], and I already see the odd incoming spam message correctly flagged as [SPAM]. For testing purposes, I switched SELinux to permissive mode (usually I activate SELinux for everything). It looks like it's causing a bit of a problem here. # sealert -a /var/log/audit/audit.log And here's what I get. --8<------------------------------------------------------ SELinux is preventing /usr/bin/perl from create access on the directory .spamassassin. ***** Plugin catchall (100. confidence) suggests ********* If you believe that perl should be allowed create access on the .spamassassin directory by default. Then you should report this as a bug. You can generate a local policy module to allow this access. Do allow this access for now by executing: # ausearch -c '7370616D64206368696C64' --raw | audit2allow -M my-7370616D64206368696C64 # semodule -i my-7370616D64206368696C64.pp ... --8<------------------------------------------------------ Usually sealert's suggestions are to the point and work perfectly. firefox and D state

Previously when firefox went catatonic to the point that I could not even scroll, its CPU usage had gone to 100%+. Now top tells me that firefox, Web Content (with a space) or sometimes kswap... has process state D, uninterruptable sleep. Any suggestions on how to deal? I often have a lot of tabs open, so discovering the right one was hard enough before. Usually, it was something relatively new, so that helped. Not so much anymore. I think a lot of it is just waiting (D) for ads or running them. Voice/Fax Modem advice

Folks A have a PCIe modem (Conexant ChipSet, PCI id = 14f1:2f83. It interfaces to my land-line (POTS) telephone line in the United States. On Windows, I had a good answering machine package (Ventafax) that reported CallerID, recorded messages, sent/received fax, and had a scripting language that let me say "To leave a message for Alice, press 1; to leave a message for Bob, press 2", etc. I'm trying to move this function to a Centos-based system without going to the expense or complexity of Asterisk (expense because of specialized telephony cards). My research found a driver (at www.linuxant.com) but it required that I recompile the driver. I got absolutely lost trying to follow the directions which seemed to be steering me towards a custom Kernel. So, my question to the group wisdom is: - Is there any hope in trying to find a suitable driver for this device without building a custom kernel? And if a custom "module" is needed, I might need help compiling it. - Is there a inexpensive modem that Centos 7 supports with the needed functions? and maybe some software applications that might help? CUDA tools?

Hi, again. So, kmod-nvidia installed. Trouble is, I have no tool to test it. And my user might need nvcc, which, of course, is only provided by the NVidia CUDA, which won't install, because it conflicts with kmod-nvidia. Has *anyone* dealt with this? If so, what was your solution? mark

Ok, folks, I've identified what my problem is, trying to install the NVidia proprietary drivers: in kernel-devel-3.10.0-514.26.2.el7.x86_64, there is a file /usr/src/kernels/3.10.0-514.26.2.el7.x86_64/include/linux/fence.h It does not exist in the kernel-devel-3.10.0-693.2.2.el7.x86_64 package. Is this something that got missed, or did HR drop it, or....? mark

Ok... I just fully updated a user's machine. And got a kernel panic on reboot. So, having run into this earlier this year, I tried to reinstall the kernel. yum reinstall kernel-3.10.0-693.2.2.el7.x86_64 Installed package kernel-3.10.0-693.2.2.el7.x86_64 (from updates) not available. Error: Nothing to do Huh? Anyone? mark

LVM not activating on reboot

Hi I've recently rebuilt my home server using centos 7, and transplanted over the main storage disks It's a 3 disk raid5, with an lvm storage group (vg03) on there Activating and mounting works fine: # vgscan Reading volume groups from cache. Found volume group "vg03" using metadata type lvm2 # vgchange -ay 1 logical volume(s) in volume group "vg03" now active # lvscan ACTIVE '/dev/vg03/storage' [<1.82 TiB] inherit I can then mount /dev/vg03/storage as expected However on a reboot, boot fails if I add that entry to fstab: 'Timed out waiting for device dev-mapper-vg03\x2dstorage.device' I then have to activate it again with vgchange. I'm guessing I'm going to need a grub option, or do something with dracut but I'm a bit stuck here Thanks Duncan

Which SELinux context are these applications running in?

Hi, If I disable ipv6 via the kernel command line, ipv6.disable=1, then systemd-networkd fails to bring up any interfaces. Removing the option and networking works as expected. Phil.

Why does multipath not create a mpath device for the system disk sdc, there is no blacklist in the mulitpath.conf file. If I do a dry-run mulitpath -d command, it sets up mpathh on sdc, but apparently not on boot. Why not? I should say that the system has not been rebooted since well before I took it over, it has been up for over 400 days. the sdd and sdf disks have a single partition, but apparently no mpath device for the partition, how to I create one? Yum java-devel not listed installed

Folks I performed an install of "java-devel". Several packages got installed. So far so good. Yet, when I performed yum list installed | grep java-devel and also yum rpm -qa | grep java-devel it did not show up as already installed. This behavior appears both on Centos7 and Centos6. This bothers me because as a time-saving effort, I maintain the last output of "yum list installed" and quickly determine whether it's worth running yum. True, yum would "do nothing", but that takes several seconds. Is there some simple explanation? It works for all the other packages I've installed. David

If you did, instead, "yum list installed | grep java | grep devel" it would work. Your "yum rpm -qa | grep java-devel" isn't a valid yum option. The correct command: rpm -qa | grep java-devel would fail to find it for the same reason your "yum list" command did. Try instead: rpm -qa java\* | grep devel that should turn it up: java-1.8.0-openjdk-devel.x86_64 1:1.8.0.144-0.b01.el7_4 @updates Your /var/log/yum.log shows the names of the packages installed, which can help if there is confusion.

I am trying to compile webkitgtk I downloaded the webkit source, extracted CMake Error at Source/cmake/OptionsGTK.cmake:12 (message): GCC 4.9.0 is required to build WebKitGTK+, use a newer GCC version or clang I downloaded 2.14.7 - just like CentOS 7.4 has, how can I be getting a GCC error ? My goal is to get the MediaSource package in webkit working. It seems to not be enabled. Is there a better way ? Thanks, Jerry

Display IP addresses on the system console *before* the login prompt.

I have a bunch of VBox Linux VMs (CentOS 6/7, Debian7/8/9, Ubuntu (14.0/16.04, Alpine) that get dynamic IPs. To get their respecitive IP addresses I have to login and run 'ip addr' I would like such info to be displayed on the VM console *before* the login prompt. Ideally an ASCII log + info (see below sig line). Thus, I can get the info from the VM console without having to login. I read up on /etc/issue but adding "\4{eth0}" to the existing string does not work. prevent users from fiddling with network?

Dear Experts, "this is system from the hell!" Than was my first reaction when I realized that logged in with GUI (X11) user can turn off (and on) network interfaces. Without being in sudoers file. Wow, this is scary to see on workstations I manage centrally. Even though I did consider local user to be able to execute the command "shutdown" (which distinguished RedHat and CentOS from other Linux flavors: after all local user can yank power cord off the wall). Sorry about my little rant above. Could someone point me into right direction as to how do I disable the ability of (local, logged in through X11) users to fiddle with network interfaces. Even worse, they can create new profile and define for interfaces to behave differently... In the past I could just add USERCTL="no" into interface ifcfg-... file inside /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts which doesn't seen to have any effect on latest CentOS 7. What is my pilot error here? (Ignorant in new shiny extremely MS Windows like for _ignorant_ person - me - system). Thanks a lot for all your help! Network scripts ifup-post

Hello, since updating to Centos 7.4 the ifup-post script in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts does not behave as it did before the update. I use it to configure additional routes via /sbin/ifup-local with the parameter of the interface being upped, but it seems to pass only 'lo' as interface name. Before it passed correctly 'eth0:0' of the virtual interface. Added a line in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifup-post, near the end when it calls the ifup-local, echoing the variable of ${DEVICE} to a file and all that showed up was 'lo'. Is this a bug? Or how can I correct this behaviour? Thanks, Thomas

NUMA split mode?

Hi, HP says that what they call "NUMA split mode" should be disabled in the BIOS of the Z800 workstation when running Linux. They are reasoning that Linux kernels do not support this feature and even might not boot if it´s enabled. Since it apparently was years ago since they made this statement, I´m wondering if I should still leave this feature disabled or not. More recent kernels might support it, and it´s supposed to improve performance. Could someone explain what this feature actually is or does, and if Centos kernels support it? -- "Didn't work" is an error.

MP4/H.264 codec for Firefox?

Hello, I am trying to get MP4/H.264 playback in Firefox to work on my CentOS laptop (for vimeo). I installed the gstreamer plugins as described here: https://wiki.centos.org/TipsAndTricks/MultimediaOnCentOS7 (No, I did not install Flash, VLC and all the other stuff. I only want HTML5 MP4 playback..) I enabled the nux repos. I did install all available gstreamer plugins, i.e. -good -bad -ugly -ffmpeg etc. No success. Has anybody got mp4 playback working? yum repo issue

hi all, i'm trying to understand an issue i'm having with a yum repo (it's a mirror of the c74 repo). there's an rpm in the repo (ibutils-libs in this case); but the client using this repo says it cannot find this rpm (i did yum info ibutils-libs --disablerepo=* --enablerepo=c74 to exclude all other repos). other rpms are ok to use, so nothing structural going wrong (i think) the repo sqlite.bz2 on the client (in /var/cache/yum/...) mentions the rpm (bunzip ...sqlite3.bz2; sqlite3 ...sqlite .dump |grep ibutils-libs), so i guess that one is ok. i downloaded the rpm from our repo and official mirror, same md5sum. the weird thing is that yum localinstall also fails: > [root@hyp101 tmp]# yum localinstall ibutils-libs-1.5.7-13.el7.x86_64.rpm > Loaded plugins: priorities, versionlock > Examining ibutils-libs-1.5.7-13.el7.x86_64.rpm: ibutils-libs-1.5.7-13.el7.x86_64 > Nothing to do > [root@hyp101 tmp]# rpm -q ibutils-libs > package ibutils-libs is not installed anyone any hints how to debug this or some clues what could be going wrong here. stijn

Hello List, I have a big Problem to install a KVM Client with virt-manager, after Update to CentOS 7.4 it is not more possible to start the virt-manager :-(. Strange problem with CentOS 7 and guest additions in VirtualBox

Hi, I'm having a very weird problem with CentOS as a VirtualBox guest. Let me explain it step by step. tl;dr: I can install VirtualBox Guest Additions and configure a fullscreen 1280x1024 graphical resolution on a full install, but not on a reduced install with a lightweight window manager. Here's what I did. 1. Install vanilla CentOS 7 with KDE. 2. Boot to reduced 1024x768 resolution. 3. Install gcc, make and kernel-devel. 4. Build VirtualBox Guest Additions. 5. Reboot to full 1280x1024 resolution. ==> perfect On a vanilla desktop installation, this works perfectly. Now here's my second attempt. 1. Install minimal CentOS 7. 2. Install X11: yum groupinstall "X Window System" 3. Install WindowMaker from Nux repo. 4. Launch WindowMaker (startx) to reduced 1024x768 resolution. 5. Install gcc, make and kernel-devel. 6. Build VirtualBox Guest Additions. 7. Reboot and still have a reduced 1024x768 resolution. ==> meh I made another attempt with Xfce instead of WindowMaker (yum autoremove WindowMaker && yum groupinstall Xfce), but with the same result. Any idea what's going on here? Thunderbird in CentOS 7.4

With the current Thunderbird I can not connect to one of my IMAP servers that uses a self-signed cert. Virtually identical IMAP servers that use CA signed certs work I was a bit out of date when I updated to 7.4 and was running Thunderbird 45.6.x and it worked. When I connected from evolution (which I do not like) it worked. When I connected with my laptop still running 45.6.x it works. so - I rebuilt thunderbird 45.8.0 from 7.3 updates (newest that isn't 5x.x.x series) and did an --oldpackage update with RPM and it works again. When rebuilding the old thunderbird in mock I had to add the following: BuildRequires: dbus-glib-devel Either the build system used by CentOS automatically includes that, or a build dependency use to pull that it but no longer does. Don't know if same thing happens on pop. I use IMAP on 143 using starttls

Semi-OT: hardware: NVidia proprietary driver, C7.4

This is really frustrating. I've got a server with two K20c Tesla cards. I need to use the proprietary drivers to use the CUDA toolkit. Btw, I had no trouble at all with building for CentOS 7.3 I have what NVidia claims is the correct driver package, a 340 series. It appears to build, but then fails to load. The only error I see is "no such device", which makes no sense to me, esp. since it says nothing whatever else. I've gone through the install log, and there are a bunch of Note:, and warnings, but the later I think are all about comparing signed and unsigned integers. And lsmod shows no nvidia drivers registered, but the logs claims that Error: Driver 'nvidia' is already registered, aborting... Anyone got any ideas? mark

Centos 7 Mate desk top

I upgraded to C 7.4 from C 6.9 on my laptop and all was well. As with C6 and the other C7 hosts that I have, if launch a terminal from the desktop it opens in [ user@host Desktop ]$ which is just fine. I restored parts of my C 6.9 home into C7.4 and now everything shows up on my desktop and when I open a terminal it now opens up in [ user@host ~ ]$ Obviously I overwrote the setting, that controls where the terminal opens. I've searched high and low but for the life of me I can't determine where that parameter is set. I've done some searches but haven't been able to get the right incantation that would yield an answer Does anyone know how I can resolve this dilemma? yum update problem - dependancy problem

I'm sure this is a FAQ, and a simple answer is available, but I've not managed it yet. I've tried all of the RPM database tidy routines. I've tried uninstalling the libblueray1 library but the ever growning dependency tree was too big. For a while I've been updating using the command yum -y --skip-broken --exclude rpcbind update which I though t was working, but the list of rpm's not updated is ever growing so i need to find a solution. Here is the output from the yum update. I've remove the bulk of the output for brevity but I can include it if needed. You have a conflicting package installed from repository @atrpms. You need to remove that package and/or disable that repository to get past the dependency issue. 'Skip broken' is not going to handle this situation nor will any other set of yum options. Last week we noticed that the default scheduler isn't being set properly in CentOS 7. I haven't checked this for CentOS 6, but it might be worth exploring. System shutdown on OOM

Hello all, had an issue on with a virtualmachine on XenServer 7.0 yesterday. It is a Centos 7.4.1708 and in a OOM situation it just shut down. No kernel panic where I could see a message, but it just turned itself off. VNC into CentOS 7.4

When I VNC into 7.4 everything is fine until I run vmplayer (VMware). The vmplayer runs but when I type on the console for vmplayer which is also running a centos image I get multiple key presses - sometimes. Its not everytime - but enough to be annoying. How do I take care of that ? Jerry

gtk3 update causing havoc

On my lab systems, the automatic updates were failing because of the problems with ipod libraries from EPEL being in the way. It turns out that was a good thing, because when I "fixed" it, a massive set of packages was updated, including the new gtk3. These packages are the ones causing problems, I think. gtk3-3.22.10-4.el7.x86_64 gtk3-devel-3.22.10-4.el7.x86_64 In the release notes, there is mention of the "giant icon" problem and how to fix that. We understand that part. The bad problem I see now is that Emacs and Chromium-browser, which rely on gtk3 don't work properly anymore. In Emacs, the symptom is that the ribbon of buttons under the pull down menu will no longer show. In Chromium, the buttons and other widget things on the top are an ugly yellow distortion. I've recompiled the Emacs that comes with EL7, as well as 24.5, and the Emacs behaves the same way, no buttons show. The buttons are invisible, but still there. If you click in there, you can get lucky. Do you see it too in Emacs? I see some posts that say the Gnome themes don't work any more with GTK and those themes should have been deprecated by the gtk3 packages. I don't think the theme is the cause because I see same problem in both Gnome and XFCE4 desktops. I see it also if I SSH into the machine and run emacs forwarded over X11. I just realized that on Ubuntu I'm running gtk-3.22.11 with Emacs 24.5 and the icons do show. Maybe there is a change in the compiler flag for Emacs that I'm missing. pj -- Paul E. 7.4 network issues

Two onboard nics, Intel, eno1 and eno2 If either of them is set to onboot then network won't start. one error message says :bad vendor preset disabled Another error message (in red) says Failed to start LSB If I can find a USB key there is an updated kmod-wl src.rpm that *may* bring up my wifi, but I am not sure I have access to a USB key at the moment. The motherboard is supermicro and the onboard nics are Intel which I thought were well supported, but I do remember going from 7.2 to 7.3 on a server IPv6 was bricked because of changes to how the /sbin/ifconfig scripts were configured. This one (is a xeon, server board, but its my desktop) I think started life as 7.2 and was at 7.3 before this update - in case there's a similar issue with incompatibilities with config file after update. I've not used the nics before, always just used wifi. What's the secret to getting them to connect via dhcp onboot at least long enough to try and get the broadcom wifi working again? -- -=- Sent my from my laptop, may not be able to respond timely

Bricked my system

Updated to CentOS 7.4 No wifi. The wifi was using wl-something driver that had third party firmware but it wasn't seen. Attempted to get network with ethernet from the mobo to router but it wouldn't come up. So I rebuilt the wl-whatever kernel module and installed the updated version built against the newer kernel. Now when attempting to boot it gets stuck at "i8042 no controller found" and stops. That message is always there, either lack of serial port or lack of PS/2 ports - I forget - but the boot now hangs there. It's caused by the wl-whatever kmod update I tried trying to get network back, but I can't remove that rpm if I can't boot. Help. -- -=- Sent my from my laptop, may not be able to respond timely

Hi, Is there a difference between 'yum groupinstall' and 'yum group install'? As far as I can tell, # yum groupinstall "X Window System" and # yum group install "X Window System" get me the same result. Just curious. upgrade or install to Centos 7.4.1708

I upgraded from 7.3 to 7.4 over the weekend. Everything went well except that I can't login because the screen is black with a cursor. If reboot boot the 7.3 kernel 3.10.0-514.26.2.el7.x86_64 kernel everything works just fine, so my guess is that there's a kernel issue with the hardware, specifically the Skylake processor. Has anyone else run into this problem and if so can how I resolve the problem other than using the previous kernel? ASUSTeK COMPUTER INC. Hi, Sorry if this is only half-CentOS-related. In my office, I'm running CentOS on all my systems (server, workstation, laptop, sandbox PCs). A colleague brought me her MacBook Pro to upgrade it from OS X 10.5.7 to 10.11.6. I downloaded the 5.8 GB dmg file and now I wonder how to create a bootable DVD with this using only Linux tools. 1. Can I simply burn this as a data DVD with K3B? 2. Or do I have to jump through burning loops using dmg2img, mount -t hfsplus, etc. I only have a couple of double layer DVDs here, so before burning a pair of expensive coasters, I thought I'd rather ask here. Connecting to internet with USB tethered iphone

I am trying to get a centos 6 system on the internet with a tethered iPhone. I can see the phone with lsusb as bus 001 device 011. A post on stackoverflow said I would need to run "# ip link set usb0 up && dhcpcd usb0" But how do I reference my phone in that command?

So after the update to CentOS 7.4 vmplayer 12.5.7 is no longer working. I can't believe after all the time that RHEL 7.4 has been released and VMware has not fixed the issue and made a new release. What is everyone doing that used the vmplayer on linux? Thanks, Jerry

Hi all, I have installed two new CentOS 7.1708 (fully patched, kernel release is 3.10.0-693.2.2.el7.x86_64) as virtual guests, one is using lvm and the other not and both use XFS as filesystem. In both, I see the following systemd's error after a few minutes: systemd-journald[779]: File /run/log/journal/3abe0470ce564669b797cb4c416f1ac0/system.journal corrupted or uncleanly shut down, renaming and replacing. Is it a bug? Or do I need to change some option in journald.conf's file? Actually, I have changed Storage's option to "volatile". Thanks. -- Greetings, C. L. Martinez

owncloud on CentOS - I have problems installing/updating recently

Dear Experts, after quite some time of praising ownclowd, I started having problems with installing and updating desktop owncloud-client on CentOS. Namely, yum repository owncloud.org points to for rpm/yum based Linux distributions lives on suse.com site (well, for all flavors of Linux, actually). I remember it smelled fishy for me the first time I installed ownclouud on CentOS using that repository living at suse.com. It worked, however, for quite some time, but recently it just times out for me, even what owncloud.org currently gives as yum.repo information (which has changed from what was in the past). Does anybody have any suggestion? Am I the only one (thus, making my "pilot error"), or others have the same? Did someone find workaround? Incidentally, another system - FreeBSD - I run on my laptop and workstation, has no trouble with owncloudclient package. But I have to give graduate students Linux, and prefer CentOS Linux, so I do need to make it work even if I end up compiling it all the time myself (sigh, I hope, not). webkit on CentOS 7.4

Hello is the webkit with CentOS 7.4 compiled with ENABLE_MEDIASOURCE ? When I call the set_media_source function with TRUE and then ask get_media_source function for the value it returns TRUE. I presume it would no return TRUE if its not enabled. However, my webpage with a video tag using webkit is not finding the MediaSource. Thanks, Jerry

upgrade to 7.4 ZFS issue

Hi all, I have a server running 7.3 using the zfs-kmod packages from zfsonlinux.org. For the update to 7.4, I followed https://github.com/zfsonlinux/zfs/wiki/RHEL-&-CentOS: removal of all zfs - and related packages and installation of the zfs-release.7.4.noarch.rpm Afterwards, yum will find almost all packages from that repository - except for the zfs-0.7.1-1.el7_4.x86_64.rpm itself ("ZFS command line utilities"). However, the package is there, I can get it via wget! Of course I tried cleaning yum + caches, not removing the zfs packages, removing them before reboot, removing them after booting into 3.10.0-693 - all of which makes no difference. On a fresh installation (aka starting with 7.4), this problem does not occur. Regardless of any ZFS specifics, what could cause yum to exclude one single package file from an otherwise perfectly accessible repo? Cheers, Thomas

selinux prevents lighttpd from printing

Hi, how do I allow CGI programs to print (using 'lpr -P some-printer some-file.pdf') when lighttpd is being used for a web server? When selinux is permissive, the printer prints; when it´s enforcing, the printer does not print, and I´m getting the log message '/bin/lpr: Permission denied'. 'getsebool -a | grep http' doesn´t show any boolean I could make out to be responsible for this. Any idea what I need to do/change to allow printing without disabling selinux?

CentOS 7: changes to php.ini

Hi, I'm hosting a few web apps like OwnCloud, Wordpress and Dolibarr on CentOS 7 that require a handful of changes to php.ini. I have to define some custom values for post_max_size, upload_max_filesize, etc. I don't know if I'm supposed to edit /etc/php.ini directly or if changes should be put in a configuration file stub in /etc/php.d. For example, I followed the recommendations of a fellow CentOS user and defined date.timezone by edit /etc/php.d/date.ini like this. [Date] ; Defines the default timezone used by the date functions ; http://php.net/date.timezone date.timezone = Europe/Paris Am I supposed to do something similar for other PHP variables? Strange issue with CentOS7 on XenServer

Hello, I stumbled upon a strange problem with CentOS upgrade on XenServer environment, and I would like to ask if someone has this issue as well: XenServer 7.1, the VM is CentOS7, with kernel 3.10.0-514.26.2.el7.x86_64 running in PV mode When I upgrade the kernel (running with yum update kernel), after reboot in the VM console it says "dracut-pre-udev[212]: modprobe: ERROR: could not insert 'dm-mod': Cannot allocate memory" and after a while it drops to dracut shell If I boot from from an old kernel with the updated kexec-tools/dracut, it's fine. Anyone experiencing this issue? Regards,

CentOS 7 yum Issue

We have been following the email list discussion regarding recent problems with yum and the upgrade to the most current CentOS 7. We have also tried some of the remedies suggested or recommended. None of these measures has yielded success, and it is not totally clear whether or not our most recent yum issues have the same root cause as those experienced by others. Fortunately, our yum execution after the most recent updates came available was on one of our virtual machines. This is a CentOS 7 system running on VirtualBox and hosted on a Windows 7 system. It is typically used for verifying system updates and applications before they are introduced to regular Intel-based systems. This virtual CentOS 7 system has also been faithfully updated for over a year by using yum and accepting all updates when they become available. The truly remarkable thing is that yum does not finish with any identifiable errors. In fact it does not finish at all and seems to be in a continuous loop of some kind that has run up to ten minutes, so far. Information scrolling by seems to repeat every few seconds with the names of a set of packages repeating over and over. Many of the messages indicate package conflicts or a dependency problem of some kind. This "loop" never allows progress to the point where one would answer yes or no the to the updates. With no end in sight, we chose to kill the yum process. Shut down and restart of the current CentOS system yields a system that appears to work well with no issues related to killing the yum process. Four separate yum update sessions have been attempted, and all have been killed. All data has been backed up properly and our application reload plan is in place, with the exception of some from epel which have caused previous problems, that others have noticed recently also. Our current plan is to remove the current CentOS 7 virtual system and install the newest CentOS 7 available. We have no plans to run yum update on any other CentOS 7 systems.

weird wordpress/php/pecl/ssh problem

So I'm running a centos 6 server which among other things hosts a website using wordpress. I'm using php56u from IUS on C6's native apache, and pecl + ssh because php-ssh2 is kinda broken. I ran smack dab into this exact problem: https://core.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/39746 In my case, wordpress 4.7.6 auto updated, and I notied that 4.8.2 was available, so I chose my standard update method of ssh2.sftp via the web interface, and it errored "couldn't find wordpress directories". error_log showed a php error: PHP Warning: file_put_contents(ssh2.sftp://Resource id #834/.maintenance): failed to open stream ... this had worked for me for several years of updates prior to this. if I understand what that guy posted on the wordpress TRAC, there's an upstream error in php 5.6.29+ (I was on .30 and now .31) and pecl ssh2. the wordpress folks on that thread think that its a php ssh problem and don't want to address it, while the poster thinks they could easily work around it. now, I realize none of this is directly a centos problem as its the IUS (Rackspace?) version of php I'm running, and pecl is way out of your bounds, but I'm wondering. anyone here at all plugged into the pecl world and familiar with the ssh extension want to comment ? or am I way out of bounds. the wordpress folks I've talked with say just don't USE the ssh2.sftp update method, use FTP (ugh!) or use 'direct' (php directly writes the .php files to update the app, eek). they think I should contain php in php-fpm, something thing I've not looked at before. -- john r pierce, recycling bits in santa cruz

KeePassX replacement

I have been using the KeePassX password manager on CentOS 6 and 7 for some time and it works pretty well. On my Windows machine I use KeePass which offers a number of features missing from KeePassX, I also sync the database between several machines, including Android units where I use keepass2android. Database compatibility is thus required. KeePassX, however, does not seem to be maintained any more, the last update was just a bit less than a year ago. It also has some annoying bugs, including where switching keyboards on the computer corrupts the username and the password if they include any character outside the ASCII range. There seems to be a community fork called KeePassXC and I would like to ask if anyone is using this password manager? It is not in EPEL, nor in any other standard repository, only through an unofficial repository at https://copr.fedorainfracloud.org/coprs/bugzy/keepassxc/,

xfs not getting it right?

update to 7.4

I was doing an update to 7.4 and somewhere in middle the machine died. If I drop back to a previous kernel the machine is alive. So how do I say "forget the previous yum update" and start all over and do it again. Booting into the new kernel I get a kernel fault. So going back one level on teh boot screen solves that - I just need to start the update again. How is that? Thanks, Jerry

CentOS, PHP & OwnCloud/Nextcloud: the version dilemma

Hi, I'm currently experimenting with OwnCloud and Nextcloud on a sandbox CentOS 7 server. I've been using OwnCloud for the last two years for my own purposes on a Slackware server, and I'm quite happy with it. In my humble opinion, every admin who wants to host OwnCloud or Nextcloud on a RHEL/CentOS server is confronted with a version dilemma. 1. CentOS 7 sports PHP 5.4, which has been officially EOL for quite some time, but Red Hat will provide security update backports until 2024. Which is fine. 2. Currently supported versions of Nextcloud (namely the 11.x and 12.x branch) require a minimum of PHP 5.6. Which seems reasonable. But if I pull in PHP 5.6 from Webtatic, for example, I only get the "official" PHP support, which will end in 2018 for the 5.6 branch. And no security backports. 3. The solution would be to go with Nextcloud 10, which only requires PHP 5.4, and which is also provided in package form by EPEL. 'yum info nextcloud' shows that the current EPEL version is 10.0.4... but a peek on the Nextcloud homepage shows me that this version is officially unsupported. Uh oh. 4. Some of the stuff I'm hosting on my CentOS 7 server (like CMSMS) is not compatible with PHP 7.x versions. So right now I don't see a solution for this. As far as I can see, the "least evil" solution would be to pull in PHP 5.6 from Webtatic and go for Nextcloud 11.x, and have an EOL for both around next summer. I'd be curious if some of you are familiar with this sort of dilemma (I guess so) and how you manage it. Block internet access for some users on the LAN ?

Hi, In our local school we have two servers and roughly 80 clients. The network is 192.168.10.0/255.255.255.0, and DHCP+DNS is managed by Dnsmasq. School PCs (teachers and management) are registered via MAC address and get an IP address in a specific range: 192.168.10.2 - 192.168.10.50 - management + teachers 192.168.10.201 - 192.168.10.220 - computer room 192.168.10.246 - 192.168.10.247 - printers 192.168.10.251 - 192.168.10.253 - wireless access points If a client (like a student's laptop, tablet or smartphone) is not registered, it gets an IP address in the range between 192.168.10.100 and 192.168.10.200. Up until recently I've been using a combination of Squid and Squidguard to filter Internet access. This year the school's director wants to completely block Internet access for all the student's personal devices. The Linux server acts as a transparent gateway. Unfortunately with Squid I can only filter/block HTTP connections, but not HTTPS (well, I could, but this is way too complicated to setup). The firewall is managed by a simple Iptables script. Now I *think* the easiest way to block a certain IP range from Internet access would be through Iptables (correct me if I'm wrong). If this is the case, what would that look like? Any suggestions? KVM SSL with wget

Hi, I installed KVM on a CentOS 7.4 host. The guest is also installed in CentOS 7.4, the network works perfectly. Both Host and Guest machines have the same OS. I do not understand why I have an SSL error on the guest and not on the host while the two computers have the same OS installation. I have some software that says it requires JRE 8.1 or higher. If I go to http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/jre8-downloads-2133… and install jre-8u144-linux-x64.rpm I get jrel.8.0_144. Anyone know where I can get 8.1?

Hello, I'm having problems updating from 7.3 to 7.4 on my ppc64 (IBM Power7 p770) installation. yum update stops with Error: Multilib version problems found. [..] Protected multilib versions: systemd-libs-219-42.el7.ppc != systemd-libs-219-42.el7_4.1.ppc64 When I scroll back through the transaction check I see various package dependencies for *.ppc instead of *.ppc64. I'm running CentOS 6. The audio goes in and out a lot. With vlc, I can sometimes get the audio back by turning the audio track off and on again. I have similar issues with a/v embedded in html.
