Hi, You need to issue two commands: /sbin/ifconfig eth0:0 xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx /sbin/route add -host xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx dev eth0 For example: /sbin/ifconfig eth0:0 172.16.1.199 /sbin/route add -host 172.16.1.199 dev eth0 You can even assign multiple aliases to one NIC (One of my servers has about 10 ip addresses): For example: /sbin/ifconfig eth0:0 172.16.1.199 /sbin/route add -host 172.16.1.199 dev eth0 /sbin/ifconfig eth0:1 172.16.1.198 /sbin/route add -host 172.16.1.198 dev eth0 /sbin/ifconfig eth0:2 172.16.1.197 /sbin/route add -host 172.16.1.197 dev eth0 and so on..... You should write an startup script to execute these commands at boot time, because after a reboot the aliases are forgotten. Missing 4.1 SRPMS?

I can't seem to find autofs-4.1.3-131.src.rpm on the download mirrors... I notice that there are not many SRPMS in the 4.1 /centos/4.1/os/SRPMS directory on the download mirrors - is this because most can be found under /centos/4.0/os/SRPMS and /centos/4.0/updates/SRPMS? - or should all the 4.1 SRPMS be in /centos/4.1/os/SRPMS ? Hi all, I've been trying to add a second ip address to one of my network cards in my CentOS box. I've defined the alias on top of eth1 which has become eth1:1 with a different ip address. I can ping the new ip address both from my linux box as well as from my Windoze desktop, however I can only access my Apache web server setup as a virtual host from within the Linux box. If I try to access it from the desktop I get an "Operation Timeout..." error. I'm sure I missed out something really basic. Browsed Google and the CentOS mailing list (plus RH) and can't figure it out. Networking is not one of my best subjects... Postfix problem with DNS

Today I have changed my DSL modem and problems with postfix begun. It receives mail, but cannot send any. In logs I can read Jun 22 19:39:53 server postfix/smtp[5040]: 9A51711FF85: to=address(a)somedomain.com, relay=none, delay=12840, status=deferred (Host or domain name not found. Name service error for name=somedomain.com type=MX: Host not found, try again) My resolv.conf is proper. I can ping any server, but postfix cannot see them. What can I do ? As such, you might be better of going with the S2895 which puts the nForce Pro 2050 and 1 GbE NIC on CPU #2, at least if you have a PCIe storage or NIC cards. It looks more like a workstation board, but the fact that 1 embedded GbE NIC _and_ 1 PCIe slot is on CPU #2 helps improve processor affinity for I/O (especially under Solaris, but even Linux to an extent as well). Tyan continues to disappoint me by putting _all_ I/O on 1 CPU. The only option where they don't is the nForce Pro 2200+2050 combination on the S2895 where the 2050 goes on CPU #2. Tyan should put the AMD8131 on CPU #2 on the 2891/2892 so it doesn't contend with the nForce 2200 on CPU #1 and its slots/peripherals (and there is no 2050). > Some features I expect are at least 4 SATA (SATA-300?) ports, ??? Automated YUM update kills DNS

We've got several CentOS 3.x systems running DNS that we keep updated automatically via YUM. Recently two of those systems (not all of them) when updating themselves to the latest versions of BIND, automatically replaced /etc/named.conf with a new one and saved the old one as /etc/named.conf.rpmsave. Which of course broke DNS for those servers. All servers got updated, but only two of them did the rewrite. Any ideas as to why it might have happed, or how to make sure it doesn't happen again? Hopefully nothing so simplistic as "exclude bind from auto updates" though if that's the only answer, we'll take it. Thanks. That's why 3Ware calls it a "storage switch," because it's like having a "layer 3 switch" instead of a "layer 3 router" (traditional microcontroller+DRAM). There seems to be some confusion over the way we release CentOS, and the release cycle. First, let's define what the upstream provider does. They released RHEL-2.1 (originally RHAS-2.1), RHEL-3 and RHEL-4. Those are specific and unique releases. They have the following Maintenance Phases: Phase 1: Full Support Start Date: General Availability End Date: 2.5 Years from General Availability date Description: During the Full Support phase, new hardware support will be provided at the discretion of the upstream provider via Updates, Additionally, all available and qualified errata will be applied to the Enterprise products via Updates (or as required for Security level errata.) ------ Phase 2: Deployment Start Date: 2.5 years from General Availability (end of Full Support) End Date: 3 Years from General Availability date Description: During the Deployment phase, all available and qualified security and bug fix errata will be applied to the Enterprise products via Updates. Security Errata will be released as necessary independent an Update. ------ Phase 3: Maintenance Start Date: 3 Years from General Availability (end of Deployment) End Date: 4 Years from end of Deployment (7 years from General Availability) Description: During the Maintenance phase, only Security errata and select mission critical bug fixes will be released for the Enterprise products. ------ Phase 1 and 2 products will get Enhancement updates (RHEA), Bugfix updates (RHBA), and Security updates (RHSA), usually released 2-4 times a year. The updates have numbers (ie., Update 1, Update 2, Update 3, etc.) Currently, RHEL 3 is at Update 5, RHEL 4 is at Update 1. Phase 3 products will only get security updates, usually released individually. RHEL 2.1 is in this phase. There will probably be individual security updates released from this point forward on this distro. http://www.redhat.com/security/updates/errata/ http://www.redhat.com/security/updates/ There is no RHEL-3.4 or RHEL-3.5 ... or RHEL-4.1. If you run up2date on RHEL, you get the updates when RedHat releases them. There are separate ISOs for the different Updates ... but only one set (or tree) of updated RPMS for each distro (RHEL-2, RHEL-3, RHEL-4). If you install off any of the ISOs and then run up2date, you are at the latest update. For example, if you install off the RHEL-3 update 1 ISOs, then run up2date from RHN, you are at RHEL-3 update 5 when finished ... not RHEL-3 update 1 ... and all of this is RHEL 3. ---------------- How does this relate to CentOS releases. First thing is this ... the releases are CentOS 2, CentOS 3, and CentOS 4. Both CentOS 3.1 and CentOS 3.5 are CentOS 3 ... both CentOS 4.0 and CentOS 4.1 are CentOS 4. So, unlike moving from Mandriva 10.1 to 10.2, moving from CentOS-3.1 to CentOS-3.5 is not changing to a new major OS release ... you are just doing exactly the same thing as the above upstream example. Moving from Update 1 to Update 5. CentOS provides new ISOs (just like upstream) when an Update X is released. Let me say it again ... moving from CentOS-4.0 to CentOS-4.1 is not changing to a new major release, it is just applying normally released updates ... except, at that point, there are new ISOs, with new hardware supported at install time. So the CentOS release model is very much like the upstream one, if you run an update, you are at the latest versions for your release tree ... exactly like upstream. --------------------- That being said, there are some who want to treat CentOS-3.1 and CentOS-3.5 as a separate release (or CentOS-4.0 and CentOS-4.1) ... and not part of the same tree. That is not how CentOS is maintained, but we have decided to enhance our vault to allow those people access to the individual trees. If you look at http://vault.centos.org/ you will see that there are currently the following directories: 3.1, 3.1-final, 3.3, 3.3-final, 3.4, 3.4-final, and 4.0 In the case of the CentOS 3, the numbered releases are the starting point .. and the 3.x-final is the ending point tree for that version. In the case of CentOS 4, the 4.0 is the ending tree ... the beginning tree was just the os directory under the 4.0 tree. There are no new security updates applied to those hives, and they are a snapshot of the tree at those points. Again, the tree here are _NOT_UPDATED_ any longer ... so don't use them and expect to have an up to date system. The up to date system is the latest trees that are always available via mirror.centos.org or the pblic mirrors. The vault takes up a major amount of disc space, which will grow as we continue to release new trees and it is not replicated to public mirrors. It is also only available on one machine, so bandwidth and access may be much slower than the real CentOS trees. My advice is that you should change your way of thinking so that you maintain your software the way the upstream provider and CentOS provide it, if at all possible. CentOS4 ClamAV reports zlib needs updating

I'm just about to update ClamAV to v0.86 on a CentOS4 box having successfully done this on a 3.3 box but... configure: error: The installed zlib version may contain a security bug. Please upgrade to 1.2.2 or later: http://www.zlib.net. You can omit this check with --disable-zlib-vcheck but DO NOT REPORT any stability issues then! Any expected probs with me doing this update from the site - I have tried with yum (including Dag's repository) and it finds no updates. Ta NK

ok, but how do I reinstall rpm-4.2.3-13.WB2.i386.rpm with rpm-4.2.3-21_nonptl.i386.rpm? When I do a 'rpm -e rpm' I can't install rpm's anymore. When I do a 'rpm -Uhv --force rpm-4.2.3-21_nonptl.i386.rpm' I have duplicate rpm-rpms. cheers, Thorsten

Script for compiling custom kernel modules

Hello fellow Linux users. So far I have been good about not adding too many third party software on my servers. One exception is that I generally need third party kernel modules for my hardware. Two of the most important being lm_sensors and 3ware 9000 ones. Now Update 5 includes a 3ware 9000 modules so I might not need to build my own in the future although I think the one I mentioned is not the type that automatically updates the firmware on the card after a reboot but that is for another post. I'm sure there are people out there who have to build kernel modules for their hardware as well. But it is a bit of a pain to keep doing that each time there is a newe kernel security update. So is anyone using scripts to automate this process that they would like to share? It's not like each computer has different hardware, it is all the same but not all of them have tools like gcc and kernel source installed. Only one computer where I compile stuff. Easier to maintain this way. What do you think?

Portions may run like crap oni586 (true Pentium/MMX), especially ALU control. --march=i486 --mtune=i686 Still runs well on a non-superscalar i486 because superscalar optimizations don't affect it. Runs near-optimal on a superscalar ix86 that has at least the same 7-issue core of the Pentium Pro-P3 (2+2+3 ALU+FPU+control). Even more likely to run like crap on i586 because it assumes the ALU is 2-issue and well-designed, and i586's just ain't anywhere near 'dat! --march=i486 --mtune=i586 (or --march=i586) Improves performance of many operations singificantly on i586. On i486 (if --march=i486, --march=i586 will not run) and i686, will use the chip rather inefficently. E.g., (and this is just 1 example) generated machine code will ripple integers through what it assumes is a pipelined FPU. On an i486 or anything but an Athlon clone, this will not only tie up the FPU, but significantly and artifically delay integer loads. On a true Intel i686 or AMD Athlon, it will leave the 2 and 3 ALU pipes, respectively, unused. Worse yet, the original Nx586 (through the Athlon) is 3x faster at ALU loads than i586, and it is a clear "de-optimization" And that's just 1 example. ;-> --march=i686 Offers little performance gain over --march=i486 --mtune=i686, while not running at all on an i486 or i586. --march=i486|i686 --mtune=pentium4 Offers not only improved performance on the Pentium 4, but all Athlons as well. --march=i486|i686 --mtune=athlon This option has been widely debated. It really _kills_ Intel performance because Intel i686's 2+2 (ALU+FPU) is not going to handle optimizations for AMD Athlon's 3+3 (ALU+FPU) and is going to have lots of stalls (especially on Pentium 4, don't get me started ;-). At the same time, the Athlon benefit is debatable for general applications -- although engineering and scientific _will_ see a good boost (40% is not uncommon). The reason why is simple. Intel's 1 complex _or_ 2 ADD FPU only allows 1 MULT at full 64-bit precision (and not SSE "lossy math") whereas AMD's 2 complex _and_ 1 ADD/MULT allows 3 MULT at full 64-bit precision. Plus, today, you're typically going to be running Athlon64/Opteron, and you get such "optimizations for free" on x86-64 targets. SIDE NOTE: -O3 ... _never_ run -O3 with --march=pentium3, pentium4 or athlon. You're asking for "lossy math" in the case of the former, and unstable optmizations in the case of the latter. Dell PE 6850 with CentOS-3

Hi list, I'm seeing problems when probing cdrom and floppy devices on a Dell PowerEdge 6850 (4x3.16GHz, 16GB RAM) with CentOS-3.4 using 2.4.21-27.0.4.ELhugemem. When I run snmpwalk the system hangs with 100% wait on all 8 cpu's (in HyperThreading mode) for approx 20s before it goes back to idle state. Same thing if I open/probe any of the cdrom/floppy devices in other ways also. If I BIOS-disable cdrom and floppy and prevents loading of these modules, the symptoms are gone and snmpwalk runs fine. ...but the problem still exits. :-) Has anyone encountered similar problems? OT: question on setting up an email server

Hi guys, I realize that this might be considered to be off topic, but the machine I want to use is running Cent OS. Ok, this is what I'm thinking about trying, and mainly just to see if I can do it. I've got a total of 3 linux machines here, and I was thinking about setting one of them up as an email server. Now, I'm not talking about setting the machine up so that all I run on it is an email client like thunderbird, or evolution and retrieve email from my email account at bellsouth. What I want to try and do is set the machine up so that my machine is the email server, and I retrieve my email from it. Is what I'm thinking about even possible, or am I just simply having a case of too much oxygen on the brain? If what I'm thinking about is possible, how would I go about doing it? Thanks Jimmy

However on my laptop, update is failing with following error just after headers are downloaded: --> Running transaction check --> Processing Dependency: glibc-common = 2.3.4-2 for package: glibc --> Finished Dependency Resolution Error: Missing Dependency: glibc-common = 2.3.4-2 is needed by package glibc My CentOS.repo is a standard one, as distributed with CentOS. I don't have any additional repos defined on my laptop. I attempted to clear yum cache (rm -rf /var/cache/yum/*). Rerun yum update, and got the same error again. Looking at the /var/cache/yum/base/headers, I see that yum downloaded headers for gblic-common, glibc-devel, and glibc-headers, but not for glibc. Seems as if yum did not considered base glibc package to be due for update. Running rpm -q glibc, shows that currently installed version of glibc is 2.3.4-2 (and all the other currently installed glibc packages are at the same version level). I don't remember doing anything fancy on that laptop that could have triggered this problem. Basically, it was normal install (desktop+devel packages mostly), and after that it was regulary updated from cron. Of course, as a workaround I could download glibc and related packages and update it by hand, and than rerun yum update to get all other updates from 4.1. But, I though it would be more fun if anybody could give me hint or two why yum failed to update this particular system.

laptop screen saver failing

My dell 8200 has centos 4.1 installed. Everything works great except the X screen saver. when it kicks in my screen goes WHITE and not what ever the selection is for the screen saver (star field, blank screen, etc..) When I do Applications, preferences, screen saver it says "The XScreenSaver daemon doesnt seem to be running on display 0:0? Launch it now?" Cancel/ Ok After that it works. What is not set correctly. Today, I don't expect Linux to run on anything but an i486 ISA or higher. The TLB and other augmentations of the i386 ISA are huge upswings in performance. I'm not talking about Intel- specific product additions (cache, FPU, etc...), but the actual ISA an features like the TLB. Pretty much everyone since the mid-'90s has been producing a i486 compatible ISA, including pretty much every embedded product. The i586 is _only_ for _genuine_ Pentium/Pentium MMX. It should _never_ be used on anything else -- and that includes the Pentium Pro on-ward, which are i686 ISA. The i686 ISA and designs fix a massive amount of serious design errors made in both the Pentium ALU itself as well as considerations in its i586 ISA. To be fair to Intel, it was their first superscalar design. But at the same time, NexGen was able to pull off an even better, superscalar ALU, and much of Intel's "design assistance" came indirectly from joining Digital on the Alpha chip briefly. i486 ISA Compatible Architectures - AMD: 486, 586, K5 (both original and Nx586+FPU), SCLan - Cyrix: 5x86, 6x86, M1 - IDT/Centaur: WinChip (just the original?) - SGS-Thompson: Nearly all cores (except very latest) i686 ISA Compatible Architectures - AMD: K6, Athlon, Athlon64/Opteron - Cyrix/NS: M2, Geode - IDT/Centaur: WinChip2+ (or WinChip4+?) - SGS-Thompson: Latest cores are i686? - ViA: C3 The only major processor I know that was only i386 ISA compatible, but had Pentium-like features (as well as its own idea of a TLB) was the original NexGen Nx586. AFAIK, the rev of the Nx586 with a non-pipelined FPU was fully i486 ISA comaptible, and became AMD's K5 design at higher ratings (120+?). Either that, or it was AMD's changes for the K5 that made it i486 compatible (and the K6 was a rev to make it fully i686 compatible). i486 cores were still popular until very recently. National Semi has been liberal in its licensing of the M2/Geode cores, which are i686 ISA compatible. I believe SGS-Thompson how has their own core offering that is i686. Supporting the i386 at this point is just not worth it. Even Alan Cox pointed this out to me when I questioned the move to i486 years ago, that even embedded x86 cores have been i486 for a long, long time and the "drop" in performance due to lacking instructions for addressing, TLB, etc... in the i386 ISA just make it a poor solution in general. Help rebuilding kernel get mount error on reboot

I am attempting to recompile the kernel with the following steps. Install kernel-sourcecode rpm cd /usr/src/linux-2.6.9-11.EL cp /boot/config-2.6.9-11.EL .config make menuconfig Device Drivers -> Character Devices -> Serial Drivers change Max number of non legacy 8250_NR_UARTS to 36 make bzImage make modules_install make install Then after rebooting and selecting my -custom image from the above compile "mount: error 19 mounting ext3" "mount: error 2 mounting none" Then the machine stops of source. What happended? How do I get my custom kernel to boot. Jerry

OT raid controller

Sorry for an OT post, but given the recent discussions here re raid, I was wondering if anyone had any info on the ITE 8212 RAID controller (GigaRAID) This is a PATA HW RAID as found on the GigaByte GA-8I915P-PRO motherboard. (I can see an IC on the board labeled GigaRAID. Their manual claims that is has it's own CPU). I am not using it because I have SATA, but I am still curious about it's HW v SW raid ability and general linux support. They do provide a linux driver but the install instructions refer to /dev/had (obviously a typo so I don't think it is well tested or supported). cannot kickstart after buying new SMC switch

Hi, On my x86_64 system I have a SiL311x controller that can do RAID. If I configure my 2 identical disks in a RAID1 setup, I would expect to see only 1 block device on Linux. Still I see 2 block devices. Is this intentional, and if so, isn't that dangerous ? Some are very good at taking the timings of VESA standards. But some support some eccentric Windows timings that are _not_ the exact same as VESA. Then put those modelines into your XF86Config/xorg.conf. Otherwise, at 1024x768, you're going to see a lot of the distortions. It has nothing to do with fonts. Thank you all for the advice. I had cygwin installed many years ago but that machine has gone the way of all silicon. While not terribly involved it seems overkill for the present need, which is just to run a single x-windowed application on a very occassional basis. X-Windows client for MS-Win2K

An intermittent need to connect to a CentOS4 development box from a MS-Win2K workstation using X-Windows has developed here. However, I cannot seem to find a cheap (read free) X-windows client for MS- Windows to accommodate this. This seems very odd to me, displaying no doubt my profound ignorance of the issues involved. The few shareware versions that I have located expect registration fees in the $90-100 range, which is something I have never encountered before. Is there a free X-Windows client for Microsoft OS's? OpenSSL on CentOS 3.4?

I'm running a CentOS 3.4 box. According to yum, the OpenSSL 0.9.7a-33.15 package I have installed is the latest available. A check of the OpenSSL website shows 0.9.7g source being the latest. Is the CentOS 0.9.7a package patched to cover the same isues that the generic 0.9.7 source covers? If not, what's my recourse? Build it by hand? If I need to build it, has anybody crossed that bridge? Thanks. -Pete

This is a newly installed server running CentOS 4 with all current updates. It's been cruising nicely since installation a week ago until this morning. Then everyting started timing out and the attached messages appeared in the log (this is a short and sanitized extract). Load went sky high. Had to reboot to restore service and all looks happy again now, but if anyone can provide some input on these messages... TIA Brian

Serial Console + VGA Console

Hi, Trying to get vga console and a serial console to both work. I can get either one to fully work but not both. When using serial, I do still get a login prompt on the vga, But not all the boot up output. Seems like half to the vga and the rest to the serial port I added lines to /etc/inittab # console port T0:12345:respawn:/sbin/agetty -L ttyS0 115200 And added to /etc/lilo.conf append="console=tty0 console=ttyS0,115200n8" I tried to add to "serial=0,115200n8" lilo.conf, but this gives error unsoported baud rate, commenting the line out seems to work. Any ideas on how to get both VGA and serial console to fully work? Maybe, I can have one but not the other? Gerald

turning off prelinking?

In short, the reason considering (and still only considering) turning it off is to make tripwire usable again (security vs. performance, I guess). Is it possible to completely turn it off system-wide? Any additional steps needed on the existing system (that already have half of the binaries prelinked)? What order of performance degradation to expect? If it is minor, nobody is going to cry about it. Big trouble: can't start server after new kernel

Hi, I have this file server with CentOS 4.0 Each time a new kernel comes out, i have to recompile it, becuse i need Appletalk support and the kernel doesn't have it. I've done this before many times and in other servers, and all went well. Now, in this particular server, with the new 2.6.9-11, after i've recompiled it, created the .img and edited grub, the machine doesn't start at all. It says it can't find the kernel image. I cannot even boot with older kernels. To worsten things, i have LVM, so "linux rescue" tells me there's no Linux installation in the server and leaves me with a prompt. Now, i can mount /boot because it is outside the LVM, but when i do it, i lost access to any command, even a mere ls. Tried to pre-copy vi before the /boot mount and could access /boot/grub/menu.lst Everything seems fine, the files are all in /boot ...!!! Do i need to run grub command after editing menu.lst ? Never did that. And why can't i boot from older kernels ? Now, the really nasty thing: somehow, i don't have the smallest hint, i had a 500 GB external USB disk to make the backups, and the "linux rescue" erased it :( :( :( Bogles me!!! Please help me. This one can cost me the job. Loosing 300 GB of files from ~ 100 users on the file server is unforgiven. Any help would be apreciated. Warm Regards, Mário Gamito

CentOS 4.1

Question about differences in RHEL 4.1 and CentOS 4.1 organization. Does CentOS follows same organization as RHEL? I don't see separate directory for 4.1 on Red Hat's ftp server (well, the public part of it, with SRPM packages), seems like all the updates were simply dumped into the 4.0 updates area, so basically doing normal system upgrade will bump all RHEL 4.0 systems to 4.1. On the other hand, on CentOS site, there is a separate directory for 4.1, with distinct set of packages for 4.1 that are not present in 4.0 update area. So basically, one would need to manually point yum to 4.1 directory tree to fully update system with latest bug fixes. Is this difference in approach intentional? Or the acutal update process (for those with RHEL subscriptions) is actually like the one for CentOS? Most consumers are not aware of many differences between CD-R v. CD-RW access, CD-R v. CD-RW filesystems, etc... In Windows, some of this is hidden from you to a point, but not all. E.g., you use a program to "record" whereas you directly access the drive letter to to "read/write." Windows only lets you "record" to CD-R (or CD-RW emulating CD-R), and won't "read/write" to anything but CD-RW (with a non-ISO9660 fs). These two processes are actually _different_. What type of CD did you insert? A CD-RW? CD-R? Or CD-ROM? Also note that CDs are not "formatted read/write" with ISO9660. ISO9660 is a linear, byte-by-byte track, that is not modifyable (most specifically, data is a "Yellow Book" track of ISO9660). You have to use _another_ filesystem to have "read/write." UDF is its replacement, although almost any filesystem can be used. You can't. You can't really "read/write" anything that is ISO9660. It is clear that this CD media (CD-RW?) was written as ISO9660. All you can do is append additional sessions/tracks (if CD-R), or re-format it (if CD-RW). These are just things that some Windows tools "hide" from you. I am swapping my laptop over to CentOS and for some reason alsa swapped my headphone jack and speakers designations during the install. The EN-8721x02 will only set you back $150, so it's well worth it (especially when you're already spending $300 for the Escalade 8506-4LP, it's only 50% more). It's also nice to have an "extra can" for either holding a spare, or mounting a replacement without having to take one of the existing drives out before it is replaced. If I want local data/temporary storage, I typically create of the "discretionary" size: /export|home/(systemname) I like to make at least _3_ "discretionary" size, 2 mounted with 1 spare, so 1/3rd each. Again, in the day of LVM/LVM2, I typically just reserve 15-30% of the disk allocation instead of making pre-made spares of each class -- but I would at least make _2_ "discretionary" size (instead of one big one). I also use "/export" when I know I'm going to be exporting them via NFS (and setting up my NIS/LDAP autmounter maps accordingly). Otherwise I use /home. Even if I'm not sure I'm going to export via NFS, if I'm sharing via SMB, then I put them under /export. I've been looking for a recommended installation guide for RHEL4/CentOS4 giving recommended disk partitioning as well as quotas. I've not used quotas with LVM yet. This box is going to have an 80 IDE system drive, an 80G SATA and a 250G SATA for everything else. One thing I want to be sure of is that I don't run out of space for the mail spools in /var/spool/mail. Does anyone know of a guide for this online? I wish Johnny had a guide like this on his site :) Mike

system environment variables

CentOS 3.x Don't know how this got by me, but for years I've been previously using /etc/profile to set system wide environment variables and now I just noticed it doesn't work any more (sort of). If you log in via console it works, log in via gdm, it does not, but use to work. Now I noticed if I create script files for the vars I want exported and include them in /etc/profile.d/ the vars get set either way. Is this now the correct way to set system environment variables by using script files in the /etc/profile.d/ ????? Sorry, I couldn't find info on this, most info says to use /etc/profile

CentOS / BQ / PHP 4.3.9 with the mail() function

Hey everyone! Got a little problem...with CentOS / BQ / PHP 4.3.9 with the mail() function I'm able to send mail using postfix directly from the command line, however when I try using the mail function of php no mail is being sent. x11 update problems

Hello, I had a power outage during a 'yum update' and I think something may have gotten corrupted in the process. Trying to run 'yum update' again gives the following errors on the most recent x11 packages: Error: Missing Dependency: xorg-x11 = 6.8.1-23.EL is needed by package xorg-x11-Xvfb I've tried removing /var/yum/cache, and various yum and rpm command line options for these 2 and other x11 packages, but can't seem to get past this. Does anyone know how to re-install these latest x11 packages? I'm running CentOS release 4.0 (Final). All throughout 2.4, every other filesystem -- Ext3, JFS (from OS/2**), ReiserFS, etc... required hack after hack after hack. XFS, with its "core" additions to kernel 2.4 provided _everything_ standard from day 1 -- Quotas, POSIX EA/ACLs, etc... It was ported directly from Irix, and was _entirely_ GPL -- which you'd figure that's something Red Hat likes. The only bug that it ever ran into, which resulted in XFS 1.1, was something that bit me on 2 /var filesystems. Otherwise XFS, like Ext3 but _unlike_ JFS or ReiserFS, benefits from being the _exact_ _same_ organization for 10+ years. Which means not only is its on-line operation well-trusted, but it's off-line fsck/repair as well (something that plagues ReiserFS heavily due to design focus). Because I could care less how a filesystem works when it works. I want to know what happens when its inconsistent, and a journal reply won't solve the problem. Most of these features in kernel 2.6 ere thanx to the SGI XFS team, and the team also worked with the Ext3 and Linux & co. as of 2.5.3+ in ensuring POSIX EAs were uniform across all filesystems c/o the VFS. I haven't wanted to bother Tweedie and/or Red Hat in getting an explaination why they aren't looking at supporting XFS, but I think it would solve a lot of scalability issues. I always assumed it wasn't merely a "NIH" attitude, and they had real reasons for not wanting to support it until Ext3 proved to be a serious limitation for them. A questiong about replacing my failing drive

First, I am not a RedHat or linux newbie. I simply have not had to do what I am getting ready to do, and I want to see if I am going to run into a problems... My HDA drive is failing (I can hear the occasional click from it and I am seeing Smart errors, the transfer rate is slow but all my data is there). I have 3 partitions on it, the /, /boot/ and my game servers (this is also the drive the bootloader is on). Will this proceedure work ok to replace it with the minimum of downtime/reinstalling A> Make bootable floppy B> Start in single user mode C> Create same partition structure on hew drive D> Move all files from old partitions to new partitions E> Switch drives F> Boot off floppy, mount, reinstall grub and boot manager on new drive G> Profit! I have downloaded the SRC rpm for kernel-2.6.9-11.EL.src.rpm <http://mirror.centos.org/centos/4.1/os/SRPMS/kernel-2.6.9-11.EL.src.rpm> I did rpm -i kernel....src.rpm cd /usr/src/redhat/SPECS rpmbuild -bp --target i686 kernel.xxx.src.rpm cd /usr/src/redhat/BUILD/kernel.XXX/linux.XXX make bzImage make modules_install make install When I reboot I get the same error about "mount: error 19 mounting ext3" Where should I go from here?
