Software RAID on Centos 4 - new issue

OK, I have managed to get software RAID 1 running on my wonderful Proliant server but now have two challenges: 1) Fresh after an OS install and reboot, the RAID array starts to do its stuff but straight away (as part of the boot messages) I am told that the second disk is 'not ready for command' and the system hangs as soon as resyncing starts. I think this is fixed by adding an hdparm line to turn on DMA (I was also losing ticks), but cannot check this because... 2) As part of the testing, I rebooted the system with the second drive pulled out, the whole lot then boots and I can use mdadm -a to add the second drive to the mirrored pair. The drives resync at a decent speed and the pair works fine for the duration, but when I reboot the second drive is not part of the mirrored pair unless I manually add it again. Multi-homed faq or docs needed

I tried to implement a multi-homed box using this faq 4.2.1 split access http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/Adv-Routing-HOWTO/lartc.rpdb.multiple-links.html But it says table is invalid. Can someone tell me what the difference is in Centos? I assume the FAQ is leaving out how to add tables to the iproute files? I am trying to have eth0 and eth1 service two different subnets for apache and not act as a router. If I use redhat-network-config and set one or both with default gateways one side will not work. MIrrored drives won't boot after installation

On Cent OS 4 the very last screen says REBOOT. Before click that do CTRL-ALT_F2 and get a prompt. then enter the following commands. This will allow the software raid arrays to boot. grub find /boot/grub/stage1 device (hd0) /dev/hda root (hd0,0) setup (hd0) This is easier the setting up mdXXX commands after boot. Jerry

Helo, I've just installed a CentOS 4.0, postgress,iptables, ect.. on a P 4 Intel using sotf RAID 1 ...and everything is fine. I bought a HP DLT 40/80G tape device for being use as tape backup to my server. My questions are: 1. What you recomended me to use as a soft backUP. (amanda, dump/restore, TAR scipts, other)? 2. How can I backUP my entire filesystem ..(I mean everything using one the above software)? 3. What software can I use to put this data into my tape device (HP DLT 40/80 G).? 4. Is there only one software which do everything I want? NOTE: I am looking for some software which makes me a quick/easy backUP and quick/easy restore... thanks in advance israel

Yum Error on CentOS 4_64 / libexpat Issues

Dear all I had an issue on CentOS 4_64 with yum that I would like some input on. Anyone with any ideas? I had a separate issue which may be linked (or not). centos 4: java crashes on amd64

Anyone experiencing problems with java on amd64? Different versions of java are crashing after few minutes. Googling around reveals that problem is probably in JIT. Disabling JIT makes it unusable (slow) but it doesn't crash. Fix anyone? Hint? Regards, Dario

Ahhh, thanx for the insight. I never liked their use of lackluster i960 33MHz and 66MHz parts. That system has the RAID code needed as long as OS is only accessing 16-bit BIOS Int13h Disk Services. The second a 32-bit OS loads, it sees the "raw" disks and doesn't understand them. That's where the 100% _software_ driver comes in, it emulates the volume for the 32-bit OS. Since all of that RAID code -- typically licensed from the same company by _all_ of the countless FRAID/mainboard-FRAID vendors out there -- it can't be GPL. Hence why FRAID products don't have GPL drivers. Except for the 'independent' GPL "ataraid.c" FRAID logic, and the reverse engineered "hptraid.c", "pdcraid" and "silraid.c" companion 'interface' GPL drivers. Of course, there is *0* guarantee those non-vendor implementations will work. I've seen people try to use them and toast their entire volume. _Real_hardware_ RAID cards completely hide the disks from the system. I.e., the system _never_ talks directly to the hard drives, but an intelligent microcontroller or ASIC. The "RAID Brains" is on the card, and the microcontroller or ASIC actually executes that code -- not your main CPU. The driver is then just a simple block driver to send data to/from the host system to the on-board intelligence. Hence why the drivers are typically GPL, there's little to them other than a basic, block SCSI driver. No RAID logic is ever exposed in the kernel driver. -- Bryan J. Smith mailto:b.j.smith@ieee.org

New kernel causes kernel panic/unable to mount root

Hi, I've just moved over to an Opteron 246 dedicated server and have used up2date to install the latest kernel (2.4.21-27.0.4.Elsmp). However, when the machine reboots it never comes back up and according to the datacentre technicians, this is what's happening: VFS: Cannot open root device"806" or 08:06 Please append a correct "root=" boot option Kernel Panic:VFS:Unable to mount root fs on 08:06 The technician then needs to reboot with the original kernel (2.4.21-27.0.2.Elsmp) to get it to work. Apparently there are no third party modules/drivers loaded. This didn't occur when I did exactly the same thing with a dual Xeon 3.06Ghz machine. Both machines use SATA drives. Any ideas? Any pointers are greatly appreciated. This seems like normal behavior to me. If by "cut myself to the internet", you mean physical disconnection (or all ports blocked), then how would ping receive a reply from google.com? You may be able to make DNS lookup requests, with dig or nslookup, but ping requires an actual connection to the address being queried, which it seems to be disconnected for you (dialup?). There are a number of programs designed for this type of situation. pdnsd (http://www.phys.uu.nl/~rombouts/pdnsd.html) looks like it's just what you're looking for. If not, try searching for 'dns proxy', 'dns cache' or 'dns proxy cache' on freshmeat or google. -- Marc

Thanks. I ended up putting a NIC from a different name brand so they would not be identical. I did delete the garbage out of /etc/sysconfig but it did not work, perhaps if I tried deleting the entire config and starting over it may have worked. Now that I have both working how can you have two default gateways (one for each adapter) so they both service the separate IP networks independently of each other? I made sure ip forwarding is turned off in sysctl.conf. But with default gateway set on both they will not respond to outside requests. Discover Yahoo! CentOS Convert Question

Hi, First, I want to say that I have fallen in love with CentOS4. I have been using RedHat since the 5.x days. After RedHat dropped the stable system to go to a unstable system and a Enterprise system I felt like I was being left out in the cold. I quickly found out about WhiteBox and used it for quite a while. Then I learned about CentOS...and switched to it for my server needs. I have switched to CentOS4 and it is an awsome stable operating system. I just wanted to add my praise before I asked my question. I need a network based distributed operating system, something like Intermezzo or Coda to keep two servers in sync on one partition. I have a server at work and at home that I want to keep a MyDocuments partition in sync. NFS will not work because I need a offline or online solution. RSYNC will not work, who many inconsistancies from files being created and removed. Will GFS work for my needs when they release U1 for CentOS? I'd suggest looking around the ifcfg-eth* files (somewhere in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts I think) nad commenting out HWADDR= lines, if that works, then try reversing the HWADDR lines - this will reverse the numbers of the ethernet cards (ie making eth0 eth1 and eth1 eth0) but should result in a stable configuration till next hardware change. And you problem? IMHO, when the system boots up, one card gets the name eth0, the other eth1, when checking HWADDR the first eth0 card matches the ifcfg-eth1 HWADDR MAC address and is thus renamed to eth1, which fails, since eth1 already exists, and thus gets a random name, while the second eth1 matches the ifcfg-eth0 HWADDR MAC address and is thus renamed to eth0. In the end the physical eth1 is eth0 and the physical eth0 gets a random dev* name. This should probably be fixed sometime... first rename all devices to random names and only afterwards rename then to eth* according to the configuration files. Cheers, MaZe. CentOS 3.3 is gone

Now that http://mirror.centos.org/centos-3/3.3/updates/i386/RPMS/ is gone (be it by design or error) I assume that all the patches for a CentOS-3.3 box can be found in http://mirror.centos.org/centos-3/3.4/updates/i386/RPMS/ Can anyone confirm this? In other words, Does the 3.4 updates directory contain updates to 3.3 and 3.4? If the answer is Yes: Good. Now what about 3.1? Should those updates be in the 3.4 directory as well? If the answer is No: What am I meant to do with my CentOS-3.3 media? I can not install with it anymore because I can't get patches. The management of these update directories always causes me confusion though it should be simple. segmentation fault issue

Hai all, I have a machine running centos3.4, once in a while trying to run yum, i got a segmentation fault. Anyone could give me an advice as im already runnig the latest patches etc. I had already checked the harddrive but it give out no error results. Has anyone ever come across the segmentation problem in yum. Or any advice in troubleshooting it ? Thanks

I think that I have answered my own question. I replaced the nameserver 0.0.0.0 line with the ip address that the locally running named is configured to listen on and the problem went away. Kernel bug in software RAID?

After doing lots of research, it seems that there is a known bug in the software RAID for various versions of the 2.6 kernel. It seems to be affecting a system that a friend of mine has put together, so I'm guessing that RH has not back ported a fix into the released kernel. Centos 4, bind slow responses when no cache

I have a Centos 4.0, bind-9.2.4-2 as a master and and FC2 bind-9.2.3-13 slave setup. Their seem to be a delay on the Centos 4 when asking for anything that is not in its cache. Doing some tcpdumps I see the AUTH response came back, but like a 3 second delay after that before server sends response to client. Both server have the same config other than one being a master and the other a slave. Their are no delays on the FC2. Googled on this with no joy. Any ideas? Ted

Non Distro Repositories ( Addons / Extras / Contrib / CentOSPlus )

The aim of this post is to try and explain the non-distro specific repositories hosted and run by CentOS. Aside from the main Distribution repositories ( OS, Updates, ISO's ) we also run the following repositories for each Release. 1. Addons : Contains packages required in order to build the main Distribution or packages produced by SRPMS built in the main Distribution, but not included in the main Redhat package tree (mysql- server in CentOS-3.x falls into this category). Packages contained in the addons repository should be considered essentially a part of the core distribution, but may not be in the main Redhat Package tree. 2. Extras : Packages built and maintained by the CentOS developers, that add functionality to the core distribution. These packages have undergone some basic testing, should track upstream release versions fairly closely and will never replace any core distribution package. 3. Contrib : Packages contributed by the CentOS Users, which do not overlap with any of the core Distribution packages. These packages have not been tested by the CentOS developers, and may not track upstream version releases very closely. 4. CentOSPlus : Packages contributed by CentOS Developers and the Users. These packages might replace rpm's included in the core Distribution. You should understand the implications of enabling and using packages from this repository. ---- We welcome contributions into the Contrib and CentOSPlus repository. Post a message on the CentOS-Devel mailing list with details of packages you would like to contribute, one of the CentOS developers will then pick it up and work with you on the issue. You can install with XFS from the installer. The nice thing about XFS, like Ext3, is that it hasn't changed in structure since the mid-'90s. Unlike IBM JFS, which was ported from OS/2 instead of AIX (largely because of Project Monterey -- see any full and accurate history on the SCO v. IBM lawsuit for more on the reasons why) and lacked a lot of the UNIX/inode structures, XFS was ported directly and fully from Irix to Linux. Which means that POSIX ACLs, Quota, NFS and other things worked off-the-bat in Linux. In fact, the SGI XFS team was responsible for a _lot_ of the new VFS interfaces of 2.5.3-onward, largely because they had already ported them from Irix to Linux for XFS support. I.e., a lot of the new features of the Linux 2.6 kernel at the VFS that _all_ filesystems benefit from were from Irix's XFS codebase. As of Linux 2.6 (and late 2.4.25+ kernels?), all of the core support structures that XFS needs are now standard. Other than one bug in XFS 1.0 (fixed some 3 years ago, resulting in the XFS 1.1 release), XFS has been rock-solid and reliable for me. Dell Poweredge 4300 + PARC 2 (Megaraid) Centos 4

After 4 days of agrevation I felt it was best I post to the list before I break something or hurt myself. It seems that 2.6 from other posts seemed to kill support for this card in particular since LSI has EOL'd it. Although I've managed to download megaraid-2.00.3 which does support this card and build an object on a sperate box. Although the installer seems to require a driver disk and a .ko (kernel object). I'm pretty much at a loss as to where to go from there. I've never built a driver disk so it's been and uphill struggle just to get this far. It's been some long days for both techs here and seems to get so far but not far enough since the box is still unusable. I much rather solve this issue then run a legacy distro that will pick up the card as is so any assistance would be greatly appreciate. -- William

Removing custom kernels?

Is this possible. I did my first one yesterday in order to get my iPod mini to work with the EL kernel. It worked well. Everything went smoothly, but I don't like what I named it. So I'd like to take one more shot at it. If I do, is there a way to remove the old one cleanly? Modules and everything. Also, if do recompile the kernel again, do I need fresh source, or can I just do a make clean, rename the setting in the Makefile for the name, then go through all the usual steps. Thanks, Preston

Time is Fleeting: CentOS 4 question

I have recently built a new server using CentOS4. I've found one major oddity: time resolution is completely whacked. I'm not using an external time source nor am I relying on NTP for time resolution. For some reason, time on this server moves forward at a far more rapid rate. Right now, all my other systems show Sunday May 8, 3:19 pm. The CentOS server thinks its Monday May 9, 3:54 pm. I just reset it about four hours ago to the correct time. I'm using an inexpensive eMachines T6212 AMD Athon 64 processor and 1 GB RAM. Can anyone suggest a reason why this server thinks it's 25 hours in the future and growing more distant with each minute? after installing this card centos 3.4 detected and configured it ok. i'm unable to use any device on the card. tryed it with creative thumbdrive (mass storage device) an samsung usb2 dvd writer. suspecting the card to be defective i replaced it but didn't help centos detected the via chipset alright and loaded the modules. any ideas?

Greetings, I have need of a newer ZLIB and/or maybe the ZLIB-DEVEL. I need 1.2.2 or later and was told to go to www.zlib.net On that site, it mentions... zlib for Linux, both shared and static plus headers (RPM format, many architectures) so what I am wondering is this, is there a new ZLIB coming down the "upstream" pipe now or quickly? if there a specific YUM command to snag from another repository(ies) that you and the developers trust? if not, which one should I grab from www.zlib.net that will not cause me any future problems with "yum" or any other situations etc? Hi, I am just migrating to Centos from fedora core 3. I have 3 boxes involved here: Box A --Fedora 3 (doing the dns, http, sendmail serving duties) Box B --CentOS Box C --CentOS I used to run root passwordless ssh both ways from boxes A and B mainly set up to keep the 2 boxes in sync w/rsync ... these 2 boxes normally ran one being the slave and the other being the master...the master did all the serving duties...if something happened where the master couldn't do it anymore, then the slave becomes master. I have tried and tried the following #ssh-keygen -t dsa (and rsa using authorized_keys(2) or both depending...) when it asks for passphrase...just enter and enter # scp /root/.ssh/id_dsa.pub boxA:/root/.ssh/ # ssh boxB #<password> boxbshell # cat /root/.ssh/id_dsa.pub >>/root/.ssh/authorized_key or key2 or both. # exit boxashell # ssh boxb <password> will NOT let me do passwordless now then I have gotten it to work by using the following /root/.ssh/.config : Host remotehost User remoteuser Compression yes Protocol 2 RSAAuthentication yes StrictHostKeyChecking no ForwardAgent yes ForwardX11 yes IdentityFile /home/localuser/.ssh/id_remotehost_dsa taken from: http://www.davz.net/static/howto/sshkeys I can get it to work from 2 boxes both ways...but when I set up the 3rd box, it works but one of the other boxes that was good does not do it anymore. X stopped working after compiling new kernel

Hi again, After quite a few stability problems with CentOS 4 and my laptop I have decided to go back to Centos 3. I installed it and got everything working alright, apart from the wireless network card. I need to use ndiswrapper and so require a newer kernel (2.4.26 at least), so I downloaded the kernel source 2.4.30, copied the right configuration (config-i686), made oldconfig and installed the kernel. Everything boots alright but X complaints about invalid checksum in the video bios. Searching for this error message it mentions that I should enable agpgart and support for my card (i852 or so) in the kernel, but it is already supported (I have tried it as a module and compiled right in). Anyone got any suggestions on how to get X working again? Do I need to get any extra RHEL patches before I can compile the code? Any help will be greatly appreciated. New to CentOS, is this a safe bet?

I know this may be a stupid place to ask, but I have to ask. I'm looking for a new Linux distro to use and support. I've been a loyal purchaser of SuSE Linux Pro for the last 3 years. I've paid my $90 loyally, in part because I wanted money to actually go to someone working on OSS, but also because I thought it was a good bargain, to get a quality, tested distro for that cost. The problem is that lately SuSE is sliding down the path towards being considered Fedora-like by Novell. So when I install SuSE I don't know if I'm going to get security updates next week or the week after. My $90 may have just gone to be a 6-month or 1-year beta tester. I need more stability than that. So I'm considering CentOS based on some articles I've read lately, as my solution. What I'm looking for is a good solid distro that COULD do some multi-media if I go hunt down the RPMs or if there's a YUM repository (I'm familiar with Fedora), but mostly a solid distro where I can do Java work daily and where the distro is memory efficient, solid and stable. And also where if I decide to run it for a year or more I won't be forced to upgrade. Now I believe CentOS promises all of these. My concerns, in terms of it being a safe bet are... #1 - Is there any reason to fear Red Hat bringing the hammer down and thus ruining the party? I'd love to see an FAQ or something to the effect that legally there's no way for Red Hat to block what CentOS is doing. #2 - Is the community strong? I'm new to the community and when I look on distrowatch it's way down the list. But is this accurate or is CentOS picking up steam? I get the feeling it's picking up steam. The reason this is important is because I'd hate to pick it only to watch it wither and have to go distro-hopping again. Once again, looking for stability. Any responses that can help me decide are appreciated. Thanks. Preston

problem with swap and upgrade to 4 from 3.3

Dear All, I've tried to upgrade a Centos 3.3 installation to 4.0 using YUM and some instructions I found in a thread on the Centos Forum. The initial problem I had with Python 2.3/2.2 has been resolved, and now I am trying to upgrade the kernel to 2.6 prior to the yum upgrade, unfortunately it bails out at the end with dependancy erros on Xfree86. At this point I decided to use the CDs with a the "upgradeany" option. This went fine initally but then bails out with a swap error, this is because swap on this machine is on /dev/md2 (a mirrored set) and this was not set up at the original install time, as all the other partitions were: when the machine was installed, one of my staff did not set the swap up mirrored, so I had to mirror the swap partition manually after the original install. This works fine, but the machine cant enable the swap at boot becuase it does this prior to enabling the RAID subsystem, so the swap startup fails, but once the machine is up, the swap is actually running without any manual intervention. Its this error, that stops anaconda from upgrading the OS from the CDs I note on other machines I have installed when the swap was mirrored on the original install, it still appears to enable swap prior to the RAID subsystem, without any errors. So I guessed this might be a problem with the ram disk image, so I created a new one using mkinitrd, but the swap still fails at startup, thus preventing me from using the CDs to upgrade the box. I guess I could set the swap back to an unmirrored set, run the upgrade from the CDs then mirror it again, but this is not ideal, does anyone have any suggestions as to how to fix this little RAID niggle with the swap caused by not RAIDing the swap parition originally on install? OT: P4 Vs Xeon for Linux

I have just had delivered a new HP Proliant server and it is based on an Intel Xeon 2.8GHz processor. On site already we have an Acer Altos G310 with a P4 2.8GHz processor. The new HP server was destined for another site with about 30 persons to service some simple file and print sharing and to manage their email (postfix + MailScanner). The Acer is hosting our Intranet, file and print sharing and soon to have our email + bacula backup services for potentially 250 users. Performance wise, would it be worth the small effort to move the Intranet etc. onto the Xeon-based server and ship the P4 to the other site or will the potential performance gains not be significant? Any insight appreciated. Thanks

ACLs iin Centos 4

Hi There, It seems the default installer with Centos 4, enables DACs and the extra ACLs which DUMP cannot handle.... so I get errors like "DUMP: ACLs in inode #nnnn won't be dumped" since DUMP and RESTORE is integral to my back policy for some 30+ machines I would like to know if its possible to turn off the extra ACLs in the file system as I really don't need them... Can tune2fs do this for me or do I have to re-build the filesystems with some option that I currently don't know... P.

YUM - Did directories change on the mirrors?

I didn't see this in the mail archives, maybe I missed it. I'm running CentOS 3. It looks like the $releasever directory has been dropped from mirrors.centos.org. This just happened in the last week (I run a daily cron to check for updates) My yum.conf (for CentOS 3) has url's defined like: baseurl=http://mirror.centos.org/centos-3/$releasever/addons/$basearch/ But when I run yum I get errors: Server: CentOS-3 - Addons retrygrab() failed for: http://mirror.centos.org/centos-3/3/addons/i386/headers/header.info Executing failover method failover: out of servers to try Error getting file http://mirror.centos.org/centos-3/3/addons/i386/headers/header.info Using my browser I see that this URL doesn't exist: http://mirror.centos.org/centos-3/3/addons/i386/headers/header.info But this does (notice the 3/ is missing): http://mirror.centos.org/centos-3/addons/i386/headers/header.info Is this a permament change or a temporary one due to server updates? This Proliant (ml330 G3) has an HP CSB-6 (LSI/Megaraid) disk controller that isn't recognised by the installer. A quick search on Google reveals drivers from RH7 - AS2.1 but nothing for 3 or 4 unless anyone knows different!? If not I'll just have to disable it and install a supported RAID card. Anyone!? Nigel

When I shutdown from the GDM menu, most of the time the screen goes black and none of the "stopping..." messages are visible until just about the time the mounted filesystems are shutdown, about three lines before acpi poweroff. 2. Always when I shutdown from my desktop manager (IceWm in my case), I get all the messages immediately. Once in a blue moon, this works in case 1 as well. No big deal. I understand the the way to stop the constant polling of my CD-ROM drive (only used every few years to install the OS) is to disable the hal service. Is there any downside to disabling hal other that the lack of auto-insert notification? Thanks.

A friend has an old Pentium-133 laptop with 32MB of memory and a 1.3 GB hard disk that he wants to use as a web server for a very small community. Will CentOS (or any other RHEL derived distribution for that matter) install and run with acceptable performance on such a system, or will a specialized distribution like Damn Small Linux be a better choice? In this case, disk space is not a big concern so getting the smallest footprint is not a high priority. Alfred

Pre-i686 (PPro-P4, K6/Athlon, Cyrix M2/C3, WinChip2?) architectures take issue some applications. E.g., Red Hat, among other distros, have not bothered with pre-i686 NPTL support. There are better distros for i486 (K5, Cyrix Mx/M1, WinChip) or i586 (exactly Pentium-only) architectures than anything Fedora Core based (RHEL), SuSE Linux based (SLES/NOES), Mandrake Linux or similarly based. Although Cobind Linux is supposedly a rebuild of Fedora for older systems. And I've found it runs XFCE pretty good on as little as 48MB. CentOS 3.x might run on it, not sure what are memory requirements for it. RHEL 2.x would run even better. 64MB should be more that enough for CentOS4 as long as you use it as dedicated plain web server (no fancy stuff, no PHP, no databases, only static content). SSL would slow down things somewhat, but would be acceptable. However, adding the normal option "rootflags=data=writeback" to my grub.conf kernel line doesn't result in writeback mode (according to `dmesg`). Hi everyone, I'm a newbie and interested in installing the R statistics package on a Centos-4 machine using yum, if possible. From the R website, I see that I can download an rpm for rhel 4. I don't know if the equivalent exists for Centos. I did look through the list that 'yum list available' yields and didn't seem to find a package for R. Can you recommend how best to install R? Should I install the rhel 4 binary or should I compile from source? How do I use yum to install a downloaded rpm? etc. Thanks for your help, Allison

CentOS 4 Software Raid1 questions

I want to mirror an existing 40GB data only drive using software Raid1 on my new CentOS 4 server. The existing drive is connected to a Promise Ultra 100 TX2 controller (non-raid). I have read about mdadm and understand how to create the Raid1 on /dev/mdxx devices. However I would like to know if the existing data on the orignal 40GB drive in the system will be destroyed when I create the raid with mdadm. Also do the 2 drives after being setup with mdadm have to be reformated? Both the 40GB drives are now formated with ext3. If not, will the added 40GB drive assigned to the Raid1 atomaticly sync to the original 40GB drive. If so, what do I need to do to assure this will happend automaticly? Along the lines of the recent discussion about ReiserFS support, I was wondering if it is compatible with SELinux? I know there are some file system support issues regarding it... Another random question: is there a way to get/use Disk Druid under a running installation? This would make adding new disks, RAIDs, LVM management, etc. a breeze compared to what it can be like sometimes currently. It's all there and very easy to use during the install, but I haven't found an easy way to add software raid-1 pairs w/LVM2 to a currently running installation. Regards...

Compiling Kernel Modules

Hi, Here'a a question - is it possible to compile a single module (distributed in the kernel source tree) for the current CentOS kernel (2.6.9-5.0.5) without recompiling the entire kernel and all other modules. I basically need reiserfs3 (nb. why is it disabled? it's a module, you use it, it doesn't wreck anything...) and I don't really want to change the rest of the kernel, and I'd like to have the minimum amount of fuss on future kernel upgrades. Now I know external modules can be compiled without recompiling the kernel - question is how to do it for an internal kernel module. What I've tried: I've installed the kernel source code, copied over the kernel settings (the entire /usr/src/kernels/2.6.... dir) onto it. run make menuconfig and selected modular reiserfs. A diff of the new and old configs shows only reiser module (and suboptions for selinux) has been enabled. So no other changes have been made. Now a make fs/reiserfs/ almost works, but it borks on some sort of .tmp_versions/reiserfs.mod problem (file not present). The resultant reiserfs.o doesn't work as reiserfs.ko (not sure if it should, though).. I can't run make modules_install without first compiling all the other modules... Should I just grep through the .config file and replace all (except reiser) =m with =n's (and rerun make oldconfig to make sure it's still consistent)? And then run make modules modules_install? Any ideas? Basically all I want is reiserfs3 for the current CentOS4 kernel... Cheers, MaZe.

Does anybody know where I might find a stock standard ready rolled binary CentOS Kernel (2.6.9-5.0.5.EL) rpm package BUT with the skas mode uml (user mode linux) patch applied ? If not I will try and build one myself......gulp.... ;-) Is there any good howto's out their on how to do this? It all appears very different with CentOS 4.0 and the 2.6.9-5.0.5.EL.src.rpm. Is anyone else running the 'vacation' mail forwarder on Centos 3? When I 'make install' I get the following error: strip: /usr/bin/vaclook: File format not recognized When I try and use vacation (with postfix), it 'goes through the motions' but inbound mail bounces with <nkendrick(a)munged.home.local>: Command died with status 1: "/usr/bin/vacation -a nkendrick(a)munged.com nkendrick" I have sent a mail to the postfix list too but I thought I'd see if anyone here has any ideas too. [ANNOUNCE] Areca SATA RAID drivers for CentOS 4.0

Hi, To follow up my CentOS 4.0/Areca SATA RAID driver disk I created a month or two ago, I have now created kernel-module-arcmsr RPMs containing just the kernel module to track the kernel updates. This means: a) No need to patch, rebuild and maintain customised kernels for Areca support b) Keep everything maintained with RPM I've taken the latest 1.20.00.07 kernel driver source as found in the 2.6.12-rc1-mm3 kernel, and built it for all variations of the i586/i686/x86_64 2.6.9-5.0.5.EL CentOS 4.0 kernels. I've also updated the driver disk so it now has the same kernel driver, but built for all of the i586/i686/x86_64 2.6.9-5.0.3.EL kernels used on the installer. There is also a nosrc RPM for the various utilities Areca offer, but you'll have to build that one yourself as I don't know what license they're released under. As before, you can get them from here: http://www.bodgit-n-scarper.com/code.html#centos I only have an x86_64 machine with an Areca card, so if anyone is using these packages on an i586 or i686 machine, please drop me a note so I at least know they work. yum pinning rpms

I did a little googling for this, but only found meaningless references, since pin has too, too common other meanings. Is there a way to pin a version of a particular package with yum/rpm? I have the rpms for the beta 2.0 version of OpenOffice installed, so I'm not interested in the updates for OpenOffice 1.1.2-24.6.0.EL4 which are now coming in. Is there a way to instruct yum to ignore this update but accept other updates? Sorry if this is a dumb question, but in spite of many years working with Linux I'm not an rpm/yum heavyweight. NFS server problem

Hi Everybody! I've got a nasty problem with a fresh install of CenOS 4 (actually re-install, to rule out any configuration problems accumulated over time). We have a c4-based machine (further Server), which is supposed to serve a lot of files over NFS. In the course of the setup I was checking how the backups (using rsync) would work and got a lot of errors reported by rsync about non-existent (sub) directories. When I went to check the reported directory on the Client, it was indeed not accessible, although it's name in the parent directory was visible. Later I've found that rsync is irrelevant, the problem could be reproduced by just running find. To illustrate (run on the client) cd /mnt/Server/export find . > /dev/null ./a/b/c: No such file or directory ls -l ./a/b ls: /mnt/server/a/b/c: No such file or directory (then follows the listing of remaining files in ./a/b) If you fo just 'ls ./a/b', the output includes 'c' among the others. NOW THE TRICK: On the Server, do ls /export/a/b/c (expected output follows) Now on the client everything is OK! I've found a similar bug here: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=144556 although it is filed against fc3, the symptoms seem to be the same, although noone mentioned that server-side trick. I've tried several client machines (rhl7.3, c3,c4), tcp/udp, v2/v3, sync/async and also set actimeo=0 - nothing seem to affect the behavior. And nothing is printed in the logs - neither on client nor server (granted, I don't have debug enabled). At some point I suspected hardware (like lost or corrupted ethernet packets), but the missing directory on the client side is missing until the trick is applied on the server side, pretty consistently. umount/mount may help with that particular dir, but the bug would show up in different place. And as per bug referenced above, I could confirm, that all the dirs reported missing have the size 12288 (haven't spotted bigger, but maybe because I haven't checked every one of them). Just in case: the Server is Dell PowerEdge 2850 connected through Gigabit interface (e1000) (latest BIOS updates applied in the course of troubleshooting). I did not try to re-install the server with c3, but even if it works, it does not seem to be an option, because we plan to use selinux, which is missing in c3 (and yes, I tried disabling selinux with setenforce=0). Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated. Have a great day, Alex

Has anyone here replaced the openoffice.org packages with those that were distributed with FC3? It's either that for me or simply scrapping CentOS in favor of FC3 (or even FC1). I'm very surprised that I can find no reports regarding the impossibility of formatting multi-page spreadsheets to print properly.
