I got this error when my server try to update using my own CentOS mirror.... I have downloaded this file from other mirrors....and nothing.... Can you help me? rebuilding anaconda for centos 4.0

Continuing the thread, if there's anyone out there who has successfully completed an anaconda rebuild (buildinstall & genhdlist), please let me know that it can be done, either privately or to the list. Having solved the kernel/loopback mount problem, I now have an anaconda that whose installer process dies at the point where it tries to install the first RPM. I have diffed the contents of the various file system images against the stock images, and I see nothing that would indicate a problem. Hello CentOS, I'm trying to isolate a problem with a notebook. I've tried to install CentOS from CD - but once I get the start screen, I type 'enter' to begin installing. The installer starts to load but only gets as far as: running install running /sbin/loader That's it. Nothing beyond that... locks up solid. The equipment is ECS 736, P4 2.6Ghz /1024MB RAM, 40GB HDD. General question on QA from a Fedora Core fan

Apologies if this ends up a dup, but there seems to have been a problem with my original subscription. ------------------------------ Hello, I am currently using Fedora on most of my servers. It does pretty well. I do have occasional problems which seem to me to stem from poor QA. For example, /usr/bin/enable <queue> coming back with "Enable: I don't know what to do!" after a cups errata upgrade when I would try to re-enable a printer. The "-c#" (multiple copies) option to lpr not working for serial printers due to a bug in the "serial" backend. (But to which a patch is applied to fix the same problem in the parallel backend). Finding my first flaw in the OS when I try to check the CD media during the install. The media check always fails. (Yes, there are going to be bugs, but finding the first one before you even get the installation media checked looks really bad. And, yes, the ide=nodma workaround fixes it.) I was very hopeful about CentOS shielding me and my clients from silly stuff like this. However, looking at the RHEL source for the serial backend to cups, it looks as though the patch to make "-c#" work on it has not been applied to serial.c. And the media check still fails with CentOS unless I use "ide=nodma", just like with Fedora. This is disappointing. Now, I wish to make it perfectly clear that I *DO NOT* consider this to be the fault of CentOS, as I understand that the policy is to remain faithfully compatible to RHEL. But if I ask RH about this, I know that I will get an "oh so politically correct" answer. On the positive side, looking at the errata, it looks as though CentOS has drastically fewer notices than Fedora, and I assume that is because there really are more problems (security of otherwise) shaken out during testing. Obviously, not being forced to upgrade due to withdrawal of support with regards to security patches every 1.5 years is a plus. So I welcome comments. If I switch my clients from Fedora to CentOS, they don't have the latest and greatest (and, for example, I need OpenOffice 2.0 ASAP for one of my clients due to it's Access-like interface to PostgreSQL), but how much advantage am I really looking at with regards to stability? i.e. I know all the reasons that CentOS *should* be more rock solid stable. Booting CentOS with LILO?

Hello all! I would like to know if is possible to use LILO as the boot loader instead of the default GRUB. My question comes because I tried to run lilo command but the message "command not found" appear. It sounds like my only boot loader option in CentOS is GRUB ¿?. fsckcheck

While working on getting software raid working, I was unable to shutdown CentOS normally. After a forced power shutdown, I noticed that my gnome background was missing and I could not change the background image or color. Trying to shutdown the server normally did not work either, it would just hang. I suspected that the file system was damaged and was not fixed automaticly on boot. I tried the old Red Hat trick of creating an empty file with the name "fsckcheck" in the root directory and then forcing a reboot of the server. This seems to fix the problem with the file system. It turns out that the 2.6.9-5.0.3.EL series of kernels has a bug in loop back mounting file systems: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=105595 (the bug is filed against fc3 but affects the original centos 4.0 kernels as well.) The bug prevents the initrd.img in anaconda from being populated, and everything goes kaplooey as soon as the PXE boot tries to do anything with it's initrd. It would also affect rebuilt ISO images. The fix is to upgrade the host running buildinstall to a 2.6.9-5.0.5.EL kernel, which has a fix for bug 105595. CentOS 4 install problems

Hi folks, Has anyone experienced install problems with CentOS 4. More precisely anaconda crashing with some remarks regarding python scripts. The funny thing is the first installation went well. It's the re-install that fails. Although I completely changed partitioning and reformatted the drive. I had the same problem with fedora core 3 some time ago. To me it looks as if it's something to do with the anaconda version that comes together with the 2.6 kernel. Anyone who can help me out, thanks Pascal.

relation "pg_user" does not exist error when running pg_dump

Hi, I'm trying to move a postgres database to another server and I ran into some weird problems. Pg_dump command was not giving any output and the logs got filled with some SELinux errors. So I turned off SELinux completely (and rebooted). vsftp 500 OOPS: SSL: cannot load RSA key

vsftpd-2.0.1-5 I am trying to get vsftpd to start with ssl_enabled=yes and not having much success. The config file works when ssl_enabled=No and does not work when ssl_enabled=Yes. I have tried setting the following: rsa_cert_file=/usr/share/ssl/certs/inet06cert.pem which is the public certificate and this: rsa_cert_file=/usr/share/ssl/private/inet06key.pem which is the server private key. Both these are in use by the apache web server as : SSLCertificateFile /usr/share/ssl/certs/inet06cert.pem and SSLCertificateKeyFile /usr/share/ssl/private/inet06key.pem respectively and I have no trouble using ssl with that service. As far as I can tell the certificates are in the right places and do the right things for apache but vsftpd chokes. Since vsftpd does not deign to log what is going on I cannot tell what it finds disagreeable about this setup. Does anyone have any idea what would prevent vsftpd from using a certificate that works with apache? Is there any documentation telling you whether tomcat5 was compiled against the 1.4.2 tree or the 1.5? You could try downloading the srpm, patching it to use the 1.4.2 java and then re-create your own rpm. tomcat5 from jpackage 1.6 on cento4 w/ java-1.4.2-sun-1.4.2.08-1jpp

Is anyone running tomcat5 from jpackage 1.6 on cento4 w/ java-1.4.2- sun-1.4.2.08-1jpp ? I'm getting weird dependencies which don't make sense, notably: Error: Missing Dependency: jdk = 2000:1.5.0_02-fcs is needed by package java-1.5.0-sun-compat I want to use 1.4.2 not 1.5 and it doesn't make sense to have jdk = 2000:1.5.0_02-fcs, unless I'm missing something? I do have java-1.4.2- sun-1.4.2.08-1jpp installed as you can see bellow. OK sever hours of grepping through the output of "yum list available," google, checking rpmfind, Dag, Fedore Extras, etc., and there doesn't seem to be a RPM for Maia Mailguard. If there is one please point me in the right direction and beat me over the head with the correct way to find RPMs in the future. Maybe I just need sleep...

Rewriting outgoing email addresses

Hi Everyone, I have a query which I hope others may find interesting as well. The company that I work for has users that subscribe to many different mailing lists for marketting and informational purposes. What I would like to be able to do is centrally manage this internally so that only one copy of the message is received regardless of the number of people subscribed to each list which we can then either deliver the message internally to anyone interested or via public folders on Cyrus IMAP/MS Exchange. The second thing I would like to be able to do is allow people to send to the appropriate list but for their email address to be rewritten to that of the registered email address of the list therefore everyone in the company who is subscribed to the list gets the replies. I am guessing that the following steps would have to be done:- * Setup an internal email account for each list (e.g. centos-list(a)companya.com) * Configure sendmail to either forward the message onto the exchange server and store in public folders or use filtering rules to deliver it to the appropriate Cyrus mailbox. * Maintain a list of all mailing lists subscribed to and have sendmail rewrite the from headers if anyone tries to send a message to one of the registered list addresses. I'm sure I've forgotten things here but I haven't got a clue how to set this up. Is this possible using the included programs with Centos (Sendmail, Cyrus IMAP, procmail)? As a second query but still related is it possible for sendmail to rewrite incoming email addresses? At the company we have various addresses in the format of firstname.surname.ext(a)company.com (where ext could be support or devel, etc). At present we setup distribution lists on exchange for everyone of these addresses for every user and it is becoming a management nightmare. What I would like to be able to do is for sendmail to notice this double-dot format and based on the ext bit to forward it onto the appropriate user as well as the relevent catch all address (i.e. send to firstname.surname(a)company.com and then also send to ext(a)company.com) Sorry if this is a bit long winded but hopefully I've explained clearly enough for someone to offer some insight Thanks in advance Regards Lee

All, I am installing a BOXD915GAVL system and centos 4. The CPU is a 2.8 GIG celeron D with 1GIG memory and 120GIG Seagate drive. Is is VERY slow. What gives? Any other experience with something like this? It is installing but even after install when booting it is taking VERY long time to even get to the Checking new hardware screen. Thanks, Jerry

That's why you can't use Ghost to clone HFS or ReiserFS partitions. Hello all We have two very important workstations dedicated to tasks of development and investigation. At the moment we have installed a dual boot platform with CentOS 4.0 and Windows XP Proffessional SP2. In order to do backups of these machines we need to create an image with Norton Ghost 2003. We have worked with Ghost during several years with different platforms (Red Hat, White Box Linux, Windows) without problems but now we are facing problems with our CentOS. When the creation of the image reaches approximately 50% in BOTH machines the Norton Ghost aborts with an error. Using the "force cloning" option of Ghost we managed to complete the creation of the image, nevertheless when recovering it we got this error: GRUB GRUB (the machine never booted) Then we tried to boot CentOS from a floppy and linux rescue and it didn't work. Two days ago we made and we recovered images to those same discs with White Box and WinXP without problems. Given our experience with Norton Ghost, we considered seriously that the problem is CentOS. We did many tests to have arrived at this consideration. Here are the details: Two exactly equal machines (the same hardware and resources), except by the hard disk 1. PC DELL Hard disk: Maxtor 20GB RAM: 512 MB Processor: Pentium 3, 866 MHz 2. PC DELL Hard disk: Seagate 20GB RAM: 512 MB Processor: Pentium 3, 866 MHz The disk partitions are: /hda1 windows xp 10 GB /hda2 /boot 100 MB /hda3 / 8900 MB /hda4 swap 1 GB We would like to know if someone has had the same problem (making an image with Norton Ghost 2003 to a dual boot system using Windows and CentOS.) greetings, trying to install netapplet (http://primates.ximian.com/~rml/netapplet/) from source on a centos 4 laptop. ./configure, make and make install all work fine, but when I then go to /etc/init.d to start netdaemon, it complains that it cannot find checkproc. I can't seem to even find anything on google for redhat or RHEL and checkproc or killproc. The closest I came was finding that killproc is in /etc/init.d/functions... but I'm not sure how to call it, when starting a daemon. thanks in advance. cameron

Cups updates - overwriting mime.* files

Every time cups is updated I have to check mime.convs and mime.types to ensure that references to handling raw file types are uncommented otherwise we notice that one of our printers stops working because the files are overwritten by the updates. Should config files not be left untouched? We do have 'print command = lpr -r -oraw -P %p %s' in smb.conf but this on its own didn't make the printer work. Do I just need to keep checking or is there a better way Oh, Centos 3.4, by the way! Thanks Nigel Kendrick

We have created a Centos 9500S Floppy Boot Disk for installing Centos on a 3ware 9500S series controller that will allow installing and booting directly from this controller. This boot disk supports only AMD XP, MP and Opterons in 32 bit mode Centos 3.4 for the up and smp versions. We can also do a x86_64 version if required. Any interest???? This problem also exhibits in RHEL3-U4, so CentOS 3.4 inherited it. CentOS 3.4 is treated as rhas3 by xcat. The first time you run 'nodeset <host> install' for a particular OS, the /tftpboot/xcat/rhas3/<arch> tree gets populated with files, including install.gz, which is a compressed disk image which in turn contains all the kernel modules, including tg3. 1.) First thing you need to do is delete (or rename) the /tftpboot/xcat/rhas3/<arch>/ directory. 2.) Next is to fix a minor bug in xcat's 'mkinstall' located in $XCATROOT/install/rhas3/ARCH/bin/. I posted the fix to the xcat user's list, and have included the hacked mkinstall as an attachment. Please note that this mkinstall is for 'x86', but it should be pretty straightforward to see how to make the change for x86_64 if that's your arch. << cut&paste'd from my post in the xcat user's list >> I went the second route and dug around inside $XCATROOT/install/rhas3/ARCH/bin/mkinstall. Jabberd and Centos 3.4

I am trying to setup a local Jabberd server for our members of our IT department to use. I downloaded the source for 2.0s8 from the jabbered site. When i run ./configure I receive the following error: "configure: error: Libidn >= 0.3.0 not found" I went out to dag and downloaded and installed the libidn-0.4.6-1.1.el3.dag rpm. When i ran ./configure again it failed again. After a little searching on Google I found the following article: http://mail.jabber.org/pipermail/jadmin/2004-June/016435.html Following its advice I rand ./configure --with-extra-library-path=/usr/lib/libidn.so.11. However it still fails. Anyone have any ideas? I don't know anything about libidn, is 0.4.6 incompatible with versions needing 0.3.0? The Vino package is installed on my CentOS 4 server, but I am unable to connect to it using vncviewer (vncviewer srvhost:0) from a client. However, I am not sure if it is "running" or how to "start" it if this is needed. The client machine in this case is running Ubuntu Hoary (gnome 2.10). The connection is just rejected. So, I am now wondering what else needs to be done to enable remote connects to succeed. I did configure the "remote desktop" settings on the server per discussion in the thread. I am on trusted network and have the firewall support turned off on both machines. I would just use the standard Xvnc and "vncviewer hostname:1", which does work, but when I login via vncviewer I am unable to do any root configuration via gnome. In other distros, I have not had this problem. I run my file server without a monitor, so I need full access to root settings from gnome just like I have when logged in non-root using a monitor and keyboard. Max FIFO buffer size - Log Reporting

Hi Everyone, I need to be able to create a summary report of all relevent syslog entries that is then emailed weekly. The idea I have for this is to pipe the syslog entries (logged from many hosts UNIX-Like and Windows) out to a a named pipe (say /var/log/logpipe) that is then read periodically by a perl script started from cron. The perl script then filters the log entries (probably using regular expressions) and takes the appopriate action based on the severity of the error (i.e. log to summary file, or immediately email admin). My main concern is that if a lot of entries get logged the FIFO buffer may overload therefore loosing entries. Does anyone know what the size of the FIFO buffer is (or how it can be configured) or maybe there is a better way to do something like what I'm trying. TIA Regards Lee W

sorry i figured this out after deleting the other parts of the thread. just run vino-preferences as the user who runs the main x display. it will have various options to enable and as soon as you do that you can get to hostname:0 via vnc. works quite well.

MIrrored drives won't boot after installation

I have a p4 motherboard with 2 ide interfaces, I connect 2 40 GB drives as hda and hdc, I install Centos 4 from a CDROM, and partition the drives as 2 x raid partition each plus a swap partition on hda, the make md0 and md1 to install /boot and / respectively. Install goes well, everything looks great, go to reboot from drives, and all I get is "grub" but no boot. I have tried this ten times, doesn't seem I can get around it. I have to configure this server so that the drives are mirrored. I have installed redhat 9 in this configuration without problems. What am I doing wrong? Chris Mason www.anguillaguide.com

A 'simple' problem?

Here's one for you if you have the time: I very stupidly killed the wrong process on a server on a remote site on Friday and now I cannot ssh login to it! It's not a major problem as it's main functions are as a file and print sharer (samba) and to run postfix/mailscanner, and I can have someone on site reboot the server when they start work on Monday, but I was wondering whether I could 'get in' by other means to reboot it - so far I have tried the following without luck: Simultaneous login requests to 'reach' a listening login as I think I've only screwed up pts0 A VNC connection to a machine on site and then using telnet (nope, telnet disabled) A VNC connection to a machine on site and then a VNC connection to the server (VNC not running on this one). Any suggestions to issue a remote reboot - as I said, it's not a major issue as I can have the server rebooted by someone on site. Thanks Nigel Kendrick

rebuilding anaconda for centos 4.0

Hi all: I'm trying to rebuild the anaconda installer for Centos 4.0 (i386) to add some RPMs and do some other things, and I've run into a problem. I've done lots of anaconda rebuilds for Tao Linux 1.0, and I'm bringing those bits forward into Centos 4.0. The all-knowing web hasn't turned up anything useful. It looks like the PXE-loaded kernel unpacked and mounted the initrd OK, but then things went awry (quickly). Anyone seen this on a PXE boot of an anaconda build? <snip> RAMDISK: Compressed image found at block 0 VFS: Mounted root (ext2 filesystem). bugs with large partitions

Sure, let me rephrase my original wording -- "I don't trust auto-negitiation." =) I say that for two reasons -- I work with a very large network consisting of tens of thousands of machines connecting to a hodge-podge of switches and routers from many different vendors. It is my personal experience that auto-negotiation does not result in optimum or even compatible speed/duplex settings often enough to be trustworthy. I've experienced this as recently as last week with brand new Cisco equipment and Dell computers running CentOS 3.4 (100/Full on one end, 100/Half on the other). I've seen the problem with Alteon and Foundry equipment recently as well. It may be part of the standard but as anyone who's been around a while knows, each vendor's interpretation of a standard can vary enough to be problematic. Second, as an administrator I want to do everything in my power to make sure the devices I manage are going to run smoothly. Why leave something as simple but as problematic as speed/duplex settings to chance or trust when it is a simple task to force it to be that which works best in the networking environment that the device lives in? For example, if auto-negotiation comes up with 100/half, 10/full or 10/half and every other local device is 100/full or vice-versa, the network is operating at less than peak efficiency and that can also result in odd problems. -- Marc

When I try to move into them while in a console I get the error: bash: cd: NFS_share1: Input/output error In Nautilus I don't even see the directories anymore and in /var/log/messages I get this error msgs: Apr 24 20:17:02 solaris kernel: RPC: garbage, exit EIO There are not entries in the /var/log/messages on the FC3 box. If I manually umount them and then mount them again, I can use them again for a while.... The exports file on the FC3 box looks like this: [root@imhotep etc]# more exports /home/angelo 192.168.1.*(rw,sync) /home/angelo/data 192.168.1.*(rw,sync) /home/angelo/data2 192.168.1.*(rw,sync) Anyone any idea what is wrong here? APM on SMP kernel

I'm Currently running Centos 3.4 on an old Dell PowerEdge with dual PIII-450 processors. I know from searching that 'APM is not SMP safe' and so when I choose to reboot the server someone has to hit the power button to power down and then restart it. Most of the Web-based info I have found on APM and SMP is dated 2000-2002 so can anyone update me on whether there is now any way round this to allow an unattended reboot? Thanks Nigel Kendrick

NFS insanity

Hi all, I've got some insanity with mounting an NFS share that before reloading my workstation afresh worked perfectly, but now refuses to mount. Actually there are two servers with shares mounted. (1) Mandrake 10.0 file server - two shares - mount perfectly (2) Fedora Core 3 - one share - can't mount to save my life! My workstation is CentOS 4. I reloaded it to get rid of the FC3 installation at the front of the main drive and recover some space on the second drive moving CentOS to the main drive. Everything else works wonderfully as advertised. The following is the only feedback I'm getting when attempting to mount the share from the FC3 server. (the shares on the file server mount perfectly) SERVER: Apr 24 09:43:41 mail rpc.mountd: authenticated mount request from 192.168.0.252:921 for /var/www (/var/www) CLIENT: Mounting NFS filesystems: mount: 192.168.0.4:/var/www failed, reason given by server: Permission denied ^^^ happens when running the command "service netfs restart[start]" I've researched this exaustively on Google and have come up with nuttin. what makes no sense at all to me is that it worked perfectly before on my previous centos 4 installation and has only developed this behavior since reinstalling and upgrading KDE to KDE-3.4 although I can't see what was in there that might have affected netfs/nfs share mounting since the other two shares from the Mandrake server do work. I think a recent update changed the behavior of ifup on systems where the drives were moved or cloned and at boot time have a different MAC address than the one found in the corresponding interface file under /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts or /etc/sysconfig/networking/profiles/default/. Now the interface is ignored with an error message about having a different MAC address than expected. I frequently update remote machines by shipping configured swappable drives so this becomes an interesting problem. However, it seems to be intended behavior so instead of reporting it as a bug, I'd like to know the correct procedure to prepare a drive to run in an unknown target machine and where this might be documented. -- Les Mikesell les(a)futuresource.com

mii-tool and cbq in Centos 3.3

Has anyone had any issues using cbq while using mii-tool in Centos 3.3? Just setup a gateway server and cbq has no affect on bandwidth. mii-tool is being used to force one of the nics to 100 full duplex. TIA -Marco Garza

Vncserver not serving up my gnome desktop, just a fancy terminal!

I have the vncserver running on CentOS 4, but when I log in using vncviewer from another box, I don't see my gnome desktop, just a fancy terminal. I suspect I need to edit the ~/.vnc "xstartup file, but what do I add to fix this. How do point releases work?

I'm new to RHEL-like distros. When, say, CentOS 4.1 is released, will it simply be CentOS 4.0 + released updates in new ISO images? Or is it more than just the updated packages integrated into the full distribution? Put another way, if my 4.0 installation is kept up to date with YUM, will I basically have a 4.1 installation? Centos EOL changes

Hi, has the end of life and yum update process changed for Centos? I want to stick with a release, but receive security updates to maintain stability on my critical servers. Last year I remember the plan being that if you picked 3.1, 3.3 or 3.4 you could stick with it and automatically receive yum updates without changing anything. Then when 3.4 came out the Centos readme said if you were on 3.3 you would automatically be updated to 3.4 through yum. That never happened and I remember reading some where here it would not. Which was fine by me since I assume that was due to sticking to the original plan. Dovecot .99.11 build fails; libiconv

Well, it seems this just isn't my day. Using the source RPM from a centos mirror, I tried to rebuild (and, after that fails) build manually a dovecot RPM. I get several errors about automake's iconv macro, AM_ICONV, missing, and then the install fails while looking for libiconv. I tested by first trying to rebuild the RPM, and when that failed, building the RPM manually by installing in sources and building, and when THAT failed, by unpacking the tarball and manually ./configure and make. Thanks to some googling around, I found that libiconv is a GNU package that's available in source, but that should generally be satisfied in glibc according to postings on the redhat mailing list. However... well, it seems that it isn't. Either that, or it's settled by a specific version of glibc, which I don't have in my glibc-2.3.4-2 ... and yes, I do have -common, -devel, -headers, -kernheaders, etc. installed for i686. I do have iconv.h on my system, but dovecot is specifically looking for libiconv. Anyone seen this before? Thanks, Karl Katzke

I've got a handful of IBM X330's at my colo and another couple at the office for testing purposes. Currently, they're running CentOS 3.4 and are very happy doing so. The 3.4 install was perfectly seamless. When I tried to upgrade one of my test machines to 4.0, the keyboard died once I got into the install every single time once I boot to anaconda from the CD. It dies as soon as the blue-background screen appears, and it dies no matter which selection I choose at isolinux. (I'm sure the system isn't locked because the keyboard is dead while the SCSI driver is loading, and the system keeps chugging along happily until it needs input.) The CD passes all of the tests I can apply to it, from checksum to media check, and has been used to install a half dozen machines both before or since. I also downloaded a new ISO from a different mirror and reburnt another one; it's most certainly the install package. The box itself runs 3.4 quite happily. Note that x330s use IBM's cable-chaining technology, which is great if you've got a tiny colo rack with a lot of servers in it like I do, since I don't have to have a KVM. I went ahead with the yum update, now 'rpm -q centos-release' shows: centos-release-3.3-1 centos-release-3-4.2 I had walked away from a vnc session as it was yum updating and came back to a closed vnc sessions. So I thought maybe it did not finish. However a server reboot and a subsequent 'yum clean' and 'yum update' did not yield any new additions. So I assumed the default unchanged centos yum.conf was giving me everything I needed. Now it seems yum will jump me from 3.3-1 to 3.4. Does this all sound about right? (I figured after seeing this I must be doing something wrong or the process changed somewhere. I do not remember seeing an announcement other than the one back in January but later someone mentioned the automatic update to 3.4 would not happen). Is there a way in a kickstart install to affect the order in which modules get loaded? I want to load 3w-xxxx before 3w-9xxx so that my OS mirror drives take their proper place as sda and sdb, but centos-4 wants to load 3x-9xxx first, making my (unbootable) big arrays the first two drives. Research the 1/3GB (32-bit) v. 4/4GB (PAE36) addressing models for Intel PAE36. If the kernel is the former, you'll run into the limit you have. If the kernel is the latter, you won't, but you'll take a paging hit as PAE36 swaps in/out 512MB pages from above 4GB (yes, I know, you only have 1GB but it's complicated to explain :-). BTW, *all* Athlons, both 32-bit and 64-bit, are actually 40-bit EV6 (Alpha 264), and not 32-bit/PAE36 addressing. But the Athlon uses 32-bit/PAE36 paging for compatibility. If you have a mainboard with a BIOS that has a "Linux" option for memory/IO addressing (very rare), there is a way to use the Linux kernel to get a "flat" 64GB model, as well as get the 32-bit Athlon's AGPgart (which is in the CPU, not the chipset - at least on the MP) to act like an I/O MMU for "safe" >4GB I/O transfers. Not even Intel's EM64T offers that BTW, I have *never* done this personally with a 32-bit Athlon. I only read about the kernel hack and the few mainboard BIOSes that support it (which prevents Windows from booting when set). Understand the 32-bit and 64-bit AMD processors are the same core design (even 48-bit/PAE52, although much is not enabled/useful on the 32-bit), including the *physical* 40-bit/1TB addressing of EV6. Accessing shell in CentOS 4 install

Greetings, I'm having trouble accessing a shell when I boot into the installation of CentOS 4 (text mode). Alt-2 (which is where the shell should be started?) shows nothing (nothing any other console). How do I access the shell within the installation? Thanks. Brendon Colby
