kbd remove error

hi guys i just partially upgrade centos 3.4 to centos 4(using apt-get) and im having a problem removing kdb 1.08-10.2, kbd 1.12-2 is already installed and im trying to remove kdb 1.08 through apt-get and rpm -e here's what happened when i use apt-get: # apt-get remove kbd#1.08-10.2 Reading Package Lists... Done Building Dependency Tree... Done The following packages will be REMOVED: kbd#1.08-10.2 0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 1 removed and 20 not upgraded. Need to get 0B of archives. firefox or mozilla won't start

Greetings When I start firefox or mozilla I get an hourglass for 3 seconds then nothing happends. Dropping to a terminal and typing firefox just returns to the command line. I re-installed firrefox and it installs fine until I quit then the same situation happends. After re-installing firefox it will run but the same situation happens where it won't start. I have installed int my home directory or into /usr/local/firfox. ( Cent OS 4.0 with all patches applied. Firefox 1.0.2 ) Ideas? Thanks -Jay

Hello Does anyone know of any possible concerns in moving a "production" CentOS 4 install from one machine to another where the "only" difference is that the processor changes from a 1.8 Intel P4 "without" Hyper-Threading to a 3.0 Intel P4 "with" Hyper-Threading ? Rid me of this boot GUI

One of these days, RedHat might actually run me off!!!! AAAARGH!!!! Can anyone tell me how to get CentOS 4 to simply boot to the console in text mode? If I wanted a stinkin' GUI I would have installed winders! Now, my KVM and 25 foot cord is just too long to send a GUI signal across the room and I'm missing 50% of the screen.. striped vertically.. at about 1/8th inch spacing. Not really good enough to see what I'm in nor what the crap I'm doing. I do see I guess an Xterm window.. so I guess I can issue commands.. or... maybe I'll have to drag over a derned monitor. Shew!! The reason why I am asking is because I am having problems using the one that comes with the OS. Everything else runs great but I am using CentOS for the first time and I want to make sure that I am not spinning my wheels doing something that I should leave alone. Just idle curiosity. I've always been fond of the simple hddtemp utility. I tried 'yum install hddtemp' (I have dag in my repos), but it was not found. Google found it on '/pub/dag/dries/packages...'. So I downloaded it, installed (Centos4), and it works just fine. NTP on CentOS 3.4

Running CentOS 3.4, I enabled the ntpd service and noticed that it opens up a hole in the firewall for ntp from 127.127.1.0. I look in the ntpd initscript and see that it's reading in servers from /etc/ntp/step-tickers. However, that file is empty... /etc/ntp/ntpservers contains clock.redhat.com and clock2.redhat.com, but ntpservers isn't used *anywhere*. This looks like a bug, but maybe I'm overlooking something stupid. I reviewed the RHEL manuals, but they only reference the GUI utilities now (grrr). Any ideas a) where 127.127.1.0 is coming from (parsing bug?), or b) why the initscript doesn't reference /etc/ntp/ntpservers? Thanks, -- Jason Dixon DixonGroup Consulting http://www.dixongroup.net

MailScanner With One vs Two Postfix Instances

An interesting point came up while recently discussing my Postfix virtual_alias issues with the MailScanner list. Apparently there is some risk with the "two instances of postfix" approach described in: http://www.hughesjr.com/content/view/12/30/Guides It sounds like Postfix and MailScanner can step on each other in the deferred queue. They recommended the single Postfix instance "hold" mechanism recommended here: http://www.sng.ecs.soton.ac.uk/mailscanner/install/postfix.shtml Here are the steps I used to convert: 1) service MailScanner stop 2) Edit MailScanner.conf and change Incoming Queue Dir = /var/spool/postfix.in/deferred to Incoming Queue Dir = /var/spool/postfix/hold 3) Rename /etc/postfix.in to /etc/postfix.old-in 4) Rename /var/spool/postfix.in to /var/spool/postifx.old-in 5) Edit /etc/postfix/master.cf and uncomment the "smtp inet n - n - - smtpd" that was commented out in Step #12 of the 2-step instructions 6) Edit /etc/postfix/main.cf and add: header_checks = regexp:/etc/postfix/header_checks 7) Create /etc/postfix/header_checks containing: /^Received:/ HOLD 8) service MailScanner start And you should be back in business. Note that the /etc/init.d/MailScanner script still references both an in and out Postfix instance; however, in looking at the code, once /etc/postfix.in is gone/renamed the "in" startup action becomes a no-op. Problems installing Centos 3.4 & 4 using NFS + Kickstart

My hardware is Sun V65x servers, (6GB RAM/2xXeon3GHZ/36GB SCSI disk). I have NFS repositories of Centos 3.1, Centos 3.4, Centos 4 & RedHat 9.0 ISO distros set up. I use boot floppies for each o/s with the same kickstart file which is of course altered to point at the desired distro. With Centos 4 I have to use a boot CDROM, of course, rather than floppy disk. I wish to set up servers with either Centos 3.4 or 4 versions rather than RH9. Root disk partition is 24GB btw. The kickstart boot works fine with RH9 & Centos 3.1. However it fails with Centos 3.4 & Centos 4 but in different ways: Centos 3.4 ======== The kickstart proceeds normally, formats the partitions & starts the install. However at 52% of the way through, it aborts, always on the same file: "glibc-kernheaders-nnnn.rpm" The fatal error message is non-specific & suggests that media is defective or disk space inadequate. I have checked the md5 sums of the ISOs & they agree with the download site ones. I have also extracted the "glibc-kernheaders-nnnn.rpm" from the ISO image #1 & compared its' md5 sum with the same module from the /os/ directory on the download site & they also agree. I have also downloaded the ISOs again & they are the same md5s as the first set :-\ Centos4 ======= This install gets to the point at where it would normally try & mount up the CENTOS4 NFS repository which is on the same server as all the other distros (this runs RH9). It then goes into a loop whereby it keeps prompting for the name of the NFS server & the CENTOS directory, where it would normally just mount it & proceed with the installation. Anyone out there with similar experience & a working fix for this issue please ? Les Oswald

I have found something called: diskboot.img at: http://www.gtlib.gatech.edu/pub/centos/4/os/i386/images/ But it is 6Mb large (6411Kb) instead of 1411Kb And the rawreadwrirewin program gets an error on it when run on NT. On Win2000, it makes a diskette that fails to boot.. So really, HELP!!!! I 'just' discovered that my old bootable diskette is for Centos 3.0, and my other CDs are Centos 3.3. ================================================================ OK. I am in an emergency crunch. I need that 4.0 install diskette. Like 2 hours ago! Where is it???????? I don't want to have to install 3.0 on this box. Illegitimi non Carborundum

PCMCIA not working on IBM Thinkpad r40

I am running Centos 4 on a Thinkpad r40 and it does not see any pcmcia cards. I know the socket is good because I had it working with Fedora Core 3. A funny thing though, once I updated my fedora kernel to a certain rev. (don't remember the version) the card socket no longer worked. Going back to an un-upgraded install of Fedora 3 worked. Has anyone seen this problem and worked this out with Centos? Joe

What you might save in money isn't worth the hassle. Hi, I have a problem installing a minimal server configuration, with php and mysql. It has nothing to do with CPU cycles but interconnect. XOR puts no strain on modern CPUs, it's the added data streams being feed from memory to CPU. Furthermore, using async I/O, MD can actually be _faster_ than hardware RAID. Volume management in an OS will typically do much better than a hardware RAID card when it comes to block writes. Of course the 9500S is still maturing. Which is why I still prefer to use 4 and 8 channel 7506/8506 cards with RAID-0+1. Even the AccelATA and 5000 left much to be desired before the 6000 and latter 7000/8000 series.

Software RAID on CentOS 4

All this talk about SATA RAID in the past few days made me wonder... about possibly using software RAID, or at least trying it on my own workstations and eventually production servers, after I learn more about it. So, I started googling for tutorials and manuals, and there are usually two kinds I can find: 1. very basic "what is software RAID", or 2. complete 400+ page books on the topic sold at Amazon.com Nothing in between. :-( Does anyone know of a good resource where I could read up more on it, from properly setting up boot drives (and mirroring boot partitions to second drive in RAID-1 config), to setting up swap partition, to best practices, caveats, etc. All these articles usually also lack any kind of disk/data recovery info, procedures for detecting and swapping failed drives, etc. I'm mostly interested in simple RAID-1 for redundancy - just 2 drives per system, that's all. Typically on my hardware RAID boxes I set up a /boot, swap and / partitions, and would like to do the same using software RAID - again, with the ability to have a fully working boot partition and complete filesystem in case the main drive fails. Thanks for any pointers, whether online or off. I'm not adverse to buying a 400+ page book if it covers all this, but the books I came across so far had pretty bad reviews and lacked data recovery altogether, which would make them rather useless. I notice that /dev/inotify is not present on my CentOS4 system, so the necessary kernel patches are probably not present. CentOS4 upgradeany hangs while loading sata_via

Hi, I have a machine running under CentOS 3.4 which I want to upgrade to CentOS 4. I booted using the CentOS 4 CD1 using "linux upgradeany". Problem is that loading sata_via never terminates. Ismod shows the sata_via module in state "Loading" while all others are in state "Live". The dmesg output shows that the module gets loaded, sees two disks, then prints info about the first one and is stuck there. I can of course provide the exact output if needed, but I would have to write it down by hand as the machine has no floppy and I can't write to the hard disk :-( Any ideas? I fear that if I just upgrade through yum, the machine won't boot afterwards. As this is one of our production DB machines, I'd rather not do that. Would compiling a kernel on my own with a newer version of sata_via and using that module be something worth trying? Best, Norbert

Some cards, like the 3Ware, try to sync I/O as best as it can for safety. This hurts performance quite a bit -- especially on the 9000 series. The 9000 series now introduces DRAM, and by default, isn't battery backed on the 9000 (the kits just became available), hence the defaults that are very "sync-like." I _highly_recommend_ you change those defaults (and get the kit too). All prior 3Ware cards are SRAM-only, which does not require an external battery source. DRAM is a leaky cell that uses 100x+ the power of SRAM, which is a complex, combinational circuit. That's why prior 3Ware cards didn't need external battery, they use SRAM. So many people don't hit the 3Ware knowledge base. You should *ALWAYS* hit the knowledge base of your intelligent card vendor. Remember, the Linux kernel is tuned to assume storage controllers unintelligent and have *0* I/O queuing capability. Hence why LVM/MD is "tuned out of the box" with Linux. Furthermore, the SCSI-2 protocol provides standard command-sets for I/O queuing for SCSI cards, as well as Intel's I2O (dpt_i2o). But when you have a "generic" SCSI block driver, like with 3Ware and many others (including the DAC_960 for a few older Mylex cards), you need to tell the kernel's VM and block interface how to best stages writes and other operations. -- Bryan J. Serial ATA hardware raid.

Hi everyone, I'm looking into setting up a SATA hardware raid, probably 5 to use with CentOS 4. I chose hardware raid over software mostly because I like the fact that the raid is transparent to the OS. Does anyone know of any SATA controllers that are well tested for this sort of usage? From what I can tell from googling, this is more or less where RHEL stands: Red Hat Enterprise Linux version 3 and the current version of Fedora support the following SATA chipsets: Intel's ICH5 SATA chipset Silicon Image's SATA chipset Does CentOS4 add anything to this as it is based on 2.6 kernel? My question upon reading what I found on Google, is if it is true hardware raid, shouldn't the OS not be able to tell it's raid at all? I'm assuming that the chipsets listed above are driver based hardware raid? what I am after is a raid array based on true hardware raid such that the OS see's just one drive, and the hardware firmware handles any mirror/striping. In reality, the higher the density, typically the higher the DTR. Seagate is the only manufacture giving 3-5 year warranties on their "consumer" drives instead of 1-3. Yes, they cost 10-20% more than Maxtor/WD, but that's piece-of-mind IMHO. The "sweet spot" right now seems to be 200GB (160-250GB) for size, density (DTR performance) and price (sub-US$100). (4) 200GB = 400GB effective RAID-0+1. > Are Western Digitals still dodgy? CentOS4 Loop at shutdown

Has anyone else encountered a loop and failure to shutdown on CentOS4? This has occurred twice in the past month, but unfortunately I failed to write down the looping messages. The only relevant problems I found via Google reference raid controllers, and I have POI (plain ol' IDE). Doh! Obviously I wuill need to record the errors. My environment is run-level 5 with GDM, but I use IceWm instead of one of the more common choices. IceWm shuts down cleanly. The loop occurs after selecting Shutdown from the GDM login panel. This includes a 7.5 (was it?) release that added LBA48 (ATA-6) addressing and UDMA Mode 6 (U133) speed support. Again., getting to 7.7.x should be a top priority - the RH3 and, especially, RH4 kernels have drivers that match these much newer 3Ware firmware-driver-3DM releaases. FYI: For reference: 7400/7800 = 33PCI64 full-length, 64-bit ASIC, 1MB SRAM, 4/8 channel 7410/7810 = as 7400/7800 but *half*-length 7450/7850 = as 7410/7810 but *2MB* 0 wait state SRAM 7500-4/8 = 7450/7850 merely renamed 7500-12 = as 7500-4/8, but with *4MB* SRAM and 12 channels 7506-x = as 7500-x, but 66PCI64 interface (ASIC clock doubled)

I'm just remembering all the problems I had several years back when I was running RH4-6.2 on WD drives. I would imagine that with striping, the 8MB 7200 drives would be good enough, and besides, it's not like I can't upgrade later. Adaptec's aging 2400A/2800A series are 66-100MHz i960/IOP30x series based on their former DPT acquisition. In fact, before their DPT acquisition, they had virtually *no* i960 or StrongARM solution that worked with Linux. Since then, the support has been varied, although the dpt_i2o driver seems to work with most products. Intel designed I20 for its i960 to make drivers and user-space software more uniform compatible, but only a few vendors (like DPT and LSI) took advantage of it. I used to have DPT and LSI i960 SCSI RAID controllers on Linux, NT, OpenVMS and UNIX on a variety of non-PC platforms like Alpha and MIPS. But, as I mentioned before, the i960/IOP30x is a *massive*slouche* for today's drives. The ones used in the 2400A/2800A series were fine 5 years ago, but don't even bother with the 28x0 and the 24x0's i960 is going to be the bottleneck. And then you have the fact that Adaptec is "hands-off," officially, on the dpt_i2o driver. Get a 3Ware Escalade 8506-4 for about the same price, and either run RAID-5 if you have lots of reads, or RAID-0+1 if you are doing lots of writes (especially random). Yeah, you'll lose a disk in the effective storage for RAID-0+1, but I've yet to see an application where RAID-5 could beat RAID-0+1 on any controller. > But Alexander on the list here said that adaptec is questionable > for Raid cards. At RAID-5, it only beats the Escalade 8506 at random writes where the measly 2-4MB SRAM oveflows. But then the Escalade 9500S with 128MB+ of DRAM buffer (in addition to the ASIC+SRAM cache) wipes the floor with it because it doesn't have a 10 year-old i960 behind it. When it comes to non-writes (or RAID-0, 1 or 0+1 non-blocking), its 32-bit blocking/buffering i960 microcontroller+DRAM bottleneck looses badly to the 64-bit non-blocking/caching ASIC+SRAM design of any 3Ware product. And 3Ware writes the GPL drivers in the kernel, which have been included since 2.2.15 (yes, 2.*2*.15). 3Ware's 3DM2 suite is also very nice for user-space monitoring. And yes, you can load 3DM2 from the 9500S download on the older 7000/8000 series (just not the 6000 series). BTW, performance matters *little* if you are putting your storage controller on the same bus as your NIC. Especially if it's a measly, "shared" 33MHz PCI32 bus. You might as well use 2 hard drives in RAID-1 because you're going to saturate it - let alone your GbE is going to be "fighting" it. Get a mainbaord with PCI-X, or at least get a chipset with the GbE on a HyperTransport interconnect or PCIe x1 rail so it's not fighting the storage controller for the PCI bus. Of course most chipset GbE and 99% of GbE cards are poorly designed (8-32KB of SRAM is typical, 64KB is you are lucky), and one should get a GbE card for a server with at least 256KB SRAM.

While they are also high performing at RAID-5 reads, the small amount of 2MB (-4, -8) or 4MB (-12) SRAM can overflow on random, RAID-5 writes. The 3Ware 9500S series adds 128MB+ SDRAM to help buffer these overflows. Unlike RAID-0, 1 and 0+1, RAID-3/4/5 are always blocking/buffered I/O, so the ASIC+SRAM design goes from an advantage to a liability. Pre-XScale (StrongARM lineage) microcontroller+DRAM designs are *dog*slow*. Intel i960 (including IOP30x series) can't push much beyond 60-70MBps. While that was sufficient for yester-year's drives in RAID-3/4/5, it is not today. And blocking/buffered is never ideal for ATA. The StrongARM and, subsequent, superscalar XScale microcontrollers change everything. They can push as little as 200MBps in old designs up to 500MBps in the new IOP32x/33x series. But you'll pay through the nose for the cards, $500+, although they do best even the 3Ware 9500S at RAID-5. Some have RAID-3/4 options that are more ideal than RAID-5 for desktops and NFS servers, respectively. But if you are looking for maximum performance, reliability and compatibility as well as load-balanced reads, RAID-0+1 on a sub-$300 3Ware Escalade 8506-4 (or a -8 for a little more) is pretty much unbeatable. The 9500S is overkill for just RAID-0+1, and if you're doing lots of writes, it's typically going to be faster than any RAID-5 solution. For extreme performance with disk redundancy, consider (2) 3Ware 8506 cards in an Opteron system with an AMD8131 or AMD8132 dual-PCI-X bus HyperTransport Tunnel -- with each card on their own PCI-X bus and then their individual RAID-0+1 volumes in a single LVM2 stripe set (RAID-0). IBM BladeCenter HS20 blades

Greetings, We have purchased an IBM BladeCenter and I am in the process of testing Linux installation on these things (boot off SAN i.e. qla2300 driver, not using internal drives). My distro of choice is Debian, however, since I'm really not interested in trying to hand compile all the drivers, I decided to try CentOS (which I'm so far very impressed with). On boot, as with the Debian Sarge disk, the CDROM disappears. The installation media complains that it cannot find the CD. I'm testing using the DVD ISO of CentOS 4. Has anyone been successful in getting CentOS 3/4 installed on a BladeCenter server? I noticed back in 11/04 there were a few posts on it. Thanks. Brendon Colby

Winbind idmap & Active Directory

Hey all, I'm running the latest and greatest CentOS4 here, along with Samba and Winbind coupled to an Active Directory server. It's all working smoothly, bar one little bit, the idmap gui and uid directives. It appears to be ignoring them completely. I've pasted the relevant directives below... winbind separator = + idmap uid = 10000-20000 idmap gid = 10000-20000 winbind enum users = yes winbind enum groups = yes winbind nested groups = yes Yet a sample user and group ID is 16777439:16777217 - well outside the range requested. Hi everyone, I've been working on a tool similar to debootstrap but designed to work with RPM-based distributions. The intent of such a tool is to be able to bootstrap a basic working RPM-based system (I use it primarily for creating chroots for cross-distro development and testing, but it could also be used for simple installs or even upgrade and dep-closure tests). It's called "rpmstrap" and it currently works "pretty well" with i[3456]86 versions of Fedora Core 2, Fedora Core 3, and CentOS 4. 2.6 Kernel Differences

I am running CentOS 4, and trying to get an unsupported program running on it. This program makes a lot of socket calls and has to run as an unprivileged user. I think I remember reading somewhere that the 2.6 kernel requires superuser rights for some socket operations. Is there a way to disable this in the 2.6 kernel? Strangest thing (crond every 5 min.)

Hi, I've installed CentOS-4 4 days ago. Now, every 5 minutes, crond opens and close a root session, with no other info. Example: Apr 14 16:25:01 tux crond(pam_unix)[4031]: session opened for user root by (uid=0) Apr 14 16:25:02 tux crond(pam_unix)[4031]: session closed for user root Every five minutes the same thing. I have nothing in /etc/crontab that makes such a thing. Does anyone knows why is this happening and what is crond doing ? printer configuration crashes after Samsung install

Hi, I just installed the Samsung linux ML-1710 driver on my Centos 3.4 system. I was intending to drive a printer conneted to a windows xp machine, over the network. Now that I've done the install, the printer configuration applet crashes as soon as I try to launch it. I get a lot of these errors when running CentOS4. Kernel Panic - not syncing: drivers/ide/pci/pix.c:390 spin_lock (drivers/ide/ide.c:c306ad68) already locked by drivers/ide/ide- iops.c/1234. Must be something in the drivers or the kernel, it does not happen using 2.4.x kernels. Maybe some kind of a race condition? Anyone else see these? Gerald

tftp - getting connection refused

I did the following to setup the tftp server. Download tftp from ftp://ftp.kernel.org/pub/software/network/tftp/tftp-0.40.bz2 tar -jxvf tftp-0.40.bz2 cd tftp-0.40 make make install mkdir /tftpboot chmod 777 /tftpboot chown nobody:nobody /tftpboot changed /etc/xinetd.d/tftp file to "disable no" service xinetd restart Now when I connect I get in /var/log/messages "tftpd: read(ack): Connection refused" I even rebooted - get same message I did "iptables -f" - get the same message Any ideas why I cannot connect? seems to be running. Does someone have an example mkisofs command with arguments to create a CD from the files on the CentOS CD? Since we are building servers, all the data is on CentOS4 CD1. I plan to modify it to include a kickstart file and remove some of the things on there that I don't need. I use something like this on the Cobalt Networks servers, need mods to work on CentOS. (following on one line) mkisofs -P Name -b boot/elterito.img -c boot/boot.catalog -R -I -L -o path-to-iso/name.iso . Now I am sure the boot references need to change. TIA for help ;) Gerald

Edit /usr/lib/rpm/macros and change the line %__dbi_rebuild nofsync !log !txn !cdb to %__dbi_rebuild nofsync !log !txn !cdb !thread 2. export LD_ASSUME_KERNEL=2.2.5 3. rpm --rebuilddb 4. unset LD_ASSUME_KERNEL 5. Edit /usr/lib/rpm/macros back to the original 6. rpm --rebuilddb So far this fixes the problems I have been having. I assume it is possible to override the macro setting on the rpm command line so no editing is required and a simple script can be run on all my machines. John. swiotlb causing panics on 8gig ia32e systems running Centos 3.4 x86_64

Hi All, I have several ia32e systems with 8 gig that panic on install and first boot. The panic is arch/x86_64/swiotlb.c (working from memory so I might be a bit off) and its in the routine that I think is trying to allocate another chunk of memory for the "Software I/O Translation Buffer". I am guessing it needs to allocate contiguous chunks of memory and that is why it fails on the realloc. Anyway, on install the only way I can get the install to work is to set "mem=512" or something way below 8Gig. Whereas once the machine is loaded I can get it to boot by without a panic by passing the kernel arg swiotlb set to some rather larger value like 16384. Doing this with varying values during install yields either the same panic or causes a failure of the kernel to detect the cdrom device due to some "resource conflict", which why on a hunch a fellow engineer tried the mem option. Anyway, we can live with this work around if we have to, but I was wondering a couple of things: - Is there any metric to choose a proper value for ioswtbl? - Since its failing to do the re-alloc in the boot kernel am I likely to see this occur on the installed kernel at some inopportune moment? - If there is such a metric does anyone have any ideas on how it might could be grafted into the kernel itself in such a way that all interested parties would be OK with such a patch? And of course if anyone else has seen this, I would be interested in their knowledge on the issue. Just so you know I familiar with this enough to know that ia32e (nocona/lindhurst 64 bit one off copy of AMD 64 bit processors) does not contain an IOMMU (unlike the AMD processor) and thus the kernel developers had to do a serious hack creating this bounce buffer like thing. Which is all to say I understand why its there, and that on the ia32e systems I have to live with it, I just want it to be stable or find some way to make it so. Thanks...james

Greetings: HP has drivers for the this controler but how do you get the drivers working for the install on Centos 4.0 ? Integrated Dual Channel Ultra ATA 100 IDE Adapter (ATA Models) I extracted the files from this RPM and placed on a CD. hpacucli-7.21-17.linux.rpm boot with the driver disk option and it does not find drivers. Constant disk activity

Hi, I am running centos on a laptop and the HD keeps on making noises every so often, even when I go to runlevel 1 and stop everything that could be doing so (hotplug, smartd, cron, anacron, atd, syslogd...). Is there any way of finding out what is accessing the disk? Not only it shortens battery life, it is annoying while working in a quiet room. I think we might be interested in trying that new kernel. I will be upgrading the Server BIOS and SCSI RAID Firmware this morning, then we'll wait and see. If that doesn't help I think are next steps will be a new kernel and a memory scan. After the first kernel panic we hooked up a serial console to the server and captured the output in order to have a record of what happens. Firefox problems

Since upgrading to FireFox 1.0.2 I have noticed a large number of problems connecting to web sites that are reached without difficulty using MS-IE 6. The symptom is a message box that declares that the "The Document Contains No Data" which, ironically enough, is the very error I get when trying to reach http://www.google.ca/url?sa=U&start=1&q=http://kb.mozillazine.org/Do cument_contains_no_data&e=10167 using Firefox. I ended up getting it in MS-IE. Is it just me or did the last release of Firefox significantly degrade its reliability. When I close Firefox with multiple tabs I now nearly always get an error that attempts to mail itself off to Mozilla. After several dozen of these I just close them now. I have removed and re-installed Firefox several times without relief. I have these same problems on at least two different machines that I use, one running Win2Kpro and the other Win XPpro. I am not looking for a fix here, but I was wondering if anyone had further information on the subject that they are willing to share. trouble booting the system with I2O hardware RAID

I've just made (yet another) CentOS 4 installation. The install process seems to go fine, however the machine doesn't wan't to boot. The system in question has one of I2O Adaptec RAID controllers. I've configured LVM with one volume group and several volumes. If I boot into the rescue mode, all looks fine and dandy. Anaconda finds the installation, and I can access all volumes. However, when doing "real" boot, it gets into trouble. All required modules are loaded from initrd image (as far as I can tell). The I2O modules are able to locate the RAID devices (I see all partitions reported: /dev/i2o/hda1 (unused), /dev/i2o/hdb1 (/boot), and /dev/i2o/hdb2 (rest of the system under LVM). The only thing different from rescue mode is that i2o/hda and i2o/hdb are reversed (this is strange, but it shouldn't affect things since /boot partition has a label "/boot", and all the rest is under LVM, so everything should be device name independent). I have no idea why i2o device drivers behave differently when loaded from initrd image during boot, and by Anaconda during installation. The last couple of messages printed on the screen are: Creating root device Mounting root file system kjournald starting. Commit interval 5 seconds EXT3-fs: mounted filesystem with ordered data mode. mount: error 2 mounting none Switching to new root WARNING: can't access (null) exec of init ((null)) failed!!!: 14 umount /initrd/dev failed: 2 Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init! Looking at the "init" script from initrd image, this correspond to: echo Mounting root filesystem mount -o defaults --ro -t ext3 /dev/root /sysroot mount -t tmpfs --bind /dev /sysroot/dev echo Switching to new root switchroot /sysroot umount /initrd/dev Which would indicate that mount of root file system went OK, but then it failed to mount /dev filesystem (basically, move already mounted /dev to /sysroot/dev). After the switchroot /sysroot, old /dev mount point become invalid (non-accessible), the new /dev mount point was not there and of course everything broke from that point on. I've Googled around a bit, and the only relevant thing Google gave me was this French page. There were couple of more pages with similar but different problem (modules failing to load and/or detect disk drives, which is not the case here, all modules were loaded correctly as witnessed by successfull LVM initialization and successfull root file system mount). http://www.fedora-france.org/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?topic_id=3838&foru… I do live in Canada, but don't speak a word of French (shame on me, but in my defense it is on my todo list). However I did managed to figure out somebody suggested going with Grub instead of LILO. IMO, Grub or LILO shouldn't make any difference, since the error is happening way after boot loader did its job. Anyhow, just for fun, I reinstalled the system from scratch, this time choosing Grub as boot loader of choice to be installed into MBR. However, for whatever reason, Anaconda did not install Grub (dd & less showed no signs of Grub in MBR). Boot into the rescue, chroot, grub-install, OK now I have Grub in MBR. But again, no joy. Grub doesn't even start and system simply hangs in mid-air. No errors printed, no anything. Currently, I'm kind of stuck and idea-less. The system did worked perfectly in the past with Red Hat 7.3 (and LILO as boot loader), and exactly the same hardware RAID configuration (two volumes, one for system, one for data). Hi guys, Just a quick question. Can RHEL4/CentOS built in firewall handle multiple IP's bound to one interface? For example on one of my boxes out there I have 64 IP's bound to an interface used in virtual hosting. I searched long and hard for a easy and useable solution without much success. Media check problems

Dear community I've just noticed that the CentOS 4.0 ISO's I downloaded from ftp.sunsite.org.uk fails the media check on installation. All four fail. The md5 checks pass and I've done 5 full installations from the set of failed cd's and no problems what so ever. I never bothered to do the media check untill a friend asked me what it does... The installation works, wonder what the problem could be? Any suggestions or should I provide more information to help fix this if it might be a bug? MailScanner SPAM Forward & Postfix Problem

First, thanks to the CentOS folks for creating such as awesome distro! Second, thanks to all for contributing to such an great mailling list! I installed MailScanner/SpamAssassin/ClamAV last week based on the excellent threads that have recently discussed the subject. For folks who missed it, I used Johnny's wonderful guide at http://www.hughesjr.com/content/category/1/14/30/Guides (see Part 4). I'm using CentOS 3.4. On the MTA side, I am using Postfix with a virtual alias table. I want to have MailScanner use the "forward" "Spam Actions" option to put all spam in a central email account (it's a local account on the same server). I can email to this central spam account no problem (both locally and from outside accounts such as gmail). The "Spam Actions = forward blah(a)blah.com" works if blah(a)blah.com is an account on a separate system (such as this account on gmail). However, no matter what I do, I cannot make it work with a local account -- I always get the following postfix error in /var/log/maillog: ..., status=bounced (user unknown in virtual alias table). I'm guessing it has something to do with the fact that I'm using a virtual alias table, but I don't want to get rid of that (even for testing purposes) because it's obviously being used for live email. :-) I know this might be more of a Postfix or MailScanner question, but I thought I would start here. Cannot open root device "LABEL=/" on 00:00

I have Centos 3.3 installed on a vmware virtual machine on a AMD Opteron processor. I upgraded the kernel to version 2.4.21-27.0.2.EL, and now when I boot the system I get the following message: Cannot open root device "LABEL=/" Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 00:00 The server boots fine with kernel-2.4.21-20. I've change the root=LABEL=/ to use the /dev/sda2, and it did not work. Does anyone has any ideas what causes the system not to boot? Thanks. Roberto DaSilva

grub/raid1 on centos4

With Centos3, fedora1/2 I have been able to put /boot on a RAID1 partition and have it boot normally. Unlike earlier versions that used lilo as the default boot loader, these did not make the 2nd drive bootable but at least I was fairly confident that if the first drive failed I could use the install CD in rescue mode to fix up the 2nd one and go on. However, Centos4 won't boot at all with a similar install attempt and running grub-install in rescue mode gives an error about not being able to find the bios drives. Is there a howto somewhere to work around this problem? -- Les Mikesell les(a)futuresource.com
