Apache and TCP Wrappers

I'm trying to lock down Apache and SSH by using TCP Wrappers. I put /etc/hosts.allow to be httpd: IP#1 IP#2 127.0.0.1 sshd: IP#1 IP#2 127.0.0.1 and hosts.deny ALL: ALL This seems to work great for ssh, and not at all for httpd. Does anyone know why this would be? thanks

Automatic disk check

You know how if you do an improper shutdown and then boot up, the server prompts you to run a file system check if you press "Y" within 5 seconds? Well, this is great but sometimes not practical in remote access situations when we call our datacenter to say reboot a hang server and they have no monitor or keyboard hooked up to the system. Is there a way to have the system forced to automatically fo the filesystem check every time it boots up, if there's a need for it, ie: WITHOUT hitting "Y"? I couldn't find the answer to this one in docs or FAQs. If I missed it, a simple pointer to the source would be of great help. Thank you, Chris

OpenGroupware.org Tests

After the initial question on this list about OGO and CentOS 4, here's what I've done. I installed CentOS 4 on a qemu image and setup a yum repo pointing to download.opengroupware.org/packages/fedora-core3/releases/ . I did this based on the assumption that FC3 packages work on RHEL4/CentOS4. yum install ogoall With this command, OGO user and database was created (Postgresql was detected and used), database structure was uploaded to pgsql. So far so good, http://localhost/OpenGroupware returns a 404. service httpd restart Same url, Apache Server Internal Error. Ok, what's wrong? system-config-services, the ogoall installation creates 4 new services, enables them as default but DOESN'T start them. Upon starting those 4 services, http://localhost/OpenGroupware worked sucessfully, straight to OGO Administration. I really didn't test it much, but, just by browsing some links on it, OGO seems to be working. Best regards, Pedro

Pedro, I have installed OGO on several different Linux versions as part of an evaulation. I would suggest starting with the Fedora RPMs available at: http://download.opengroupware.org/packages/fedora-core2/releases/ I have not looked at OGO since Dec/Jan, but the directions for installation are perhaps the worst I have ever seen. Hopelessly outdated & supersceded directions were prominenet and current directions buried away. By starting with the Fedora RPM you can be pretty confident you haven't missed something on the dge of the documentation. We ended up going with eGroupWare regards Dave www.HornfordAssociates.com

Problems joining Samba toa w2000 AD PDC

Hi, I have this (Linux) Samba file server, that indeed is a client of a Windows 2000 Server PDC, using Active Directory. I am the Samba machine admin, but not the Windows one. I have to join the Samba machine to the PDC on the 2000 server. I ask the Windows 2000 server admin to come to my Samba machine and insert his login and password to join my machine, but i always get the same error (after my signature, along with other relevant data). I tried: # net ads join -Uzbr(a)dte.ua.pt What could be causing the error ? Another question.: In the moment of joining the Samba machine to the PDC on the Windows 2000 Server, the Samba daemons must be up or down (i've read contraditory things about this issue) ? Any help would be apreciated. I've been trying several message board software (PHPBB, etc) and haven't found one that's as feature rich as I'd like. I used to run Ikonboard but have had some issues with that. Hi all! I'm thinking on installing OGO on CentOS 4. I've been to download.opengroupware.org but I didn't find any CentOS/RHEL 4 specific rpm packages. I'm wondering, since RHEL4/CentOS4 is based on Fedora Core 3, can I use these packages safely? Has anyone ever tried installing OGO on CentOS 4? Has anyone ever used ogoall-...rpm ? I had yam working with ncsu.edu until the things changed when centos seperated the two projects. Now I can't get it to work. This is what I am trying to use but it says "nothing to do". updates = rsync://ftp.linux.ncsu.edu/centos/$release/$repo/$arch/RPMS/ This with gatech on the other hand works but they have a 20 connection limit so I would like to get ncsu.esu working again. Creating CentOS DVD from scratch

I've found discussion about this in list archives, but no final answers. Many helpfull people wrote in the past how to avoid creating DVD (install from network, install from disk, boot this way, boot that way). But, I do need DVD, no way around it. No network, no USB, no floppy, no anything. Placing files on hard drive not an option. Just a DVD-ROM. By Googling around, I found some pointers how to do it for Red Hat 8/9 and Fedora Core. Basically, something along the lines: mkisofs -o centos-dvd.iso -V 'CentOS 4.0' \ -b isolinux/isolinux.bin -c isolinux/boot.cat \ -no-emul-boot -boot-load-size 4 -boot-info-table \ -r -J -T . I am able to boot from this DVD image, however Anaconda does not recognize it as CentOS installation CD/DVD. I guess it is either checking volume label or .diskinfo file (or whatever it is called). Stupid Question I know...

I'm wanting my Centos 4.0 box to boot up into TEXT mode, like all of my other Linux servers do. Unfortunately, it only boots into graphics mode and there's some issue with the keyboard (it controls the mouse, very poorly). I can SSH into the box so I can re-config it.. But just don't know where to look in this new version. I tried GRUB.CONF and even the SYSTEM_CONFIG programs.. No luck. Thanks. Scott

On the most recent errata, I am getting a dependency conflict: [root@lists etc]# yum update Gathering header information file(s) from server(s) Server: CentOS-3 - Addons Server: CentOS-3 - Base Server: CentOS-3 - Extras Server: CentOS-3 - Updates Finding updated packages Downloading needed headers Resolving dependencies .conflict between gtk2 and librsvg2 [root@lists etc]# I looked in the yum.log, but only found successes in there. I tried updating each one individually, and librsvg2 reports as being current. So, I am at a loss as to how/where to go from here. Any hint or pointers would be appreciated. Thanks. Sean.

PHP RPM with t1lib?

I have a clean install of CentOS 4 running on a box which will be an image generator. One of the requirements is t1lib support compiled into PHP. I don't want to go away from a fully RPM based system, so I don't want to compile PHP from source. Does anyone have an RPM with t1lib compiled in or is there a way to build my own RPM with the t1lib support compiled in? TIA! Mike

First, I thanks you all for your answers. Step by step what I did. 1. Install from CD1 CentOS mkisofs-2.01.1-5.i386.rpm 2. create the file /tmp/2.6.9-5.0.3.EL.iso 3. run mkbootdisk --device /tmp/2.6.9-5.0.3.EL.iso --iso 2.6.9-5.0.3.EL 4. Burn this ISO image to a CD. That's it!! regards, israel

Well I now have a 4.0 server at a solid checkpoint. Before I start the chore of setting up SAMBA and LDAP. Part of the delay was I did not copy all of the needed DNS files, and I have to reerad the BIND book. So I want to be able to get to this point again easily. I did not note down what options I had selected during install. Is there some way in the install log to figure that out? Is there some way to do an image backup? I only have a Win2000 server available for the backup, no NFS on another system. Appreciate any and all help. Barrs Law of Recursive futility If you're smart enough to use one of these.... .....you can probably manage without one!

Collins, Most of my servers are connected remotely, I migrated from WhiteBox to CentOS linux, I had in every (remote) server a bootdisk (floppy), so in case of a raid crash, some people there booted the server from the bootdisk and then I reconstructed the Raid remotely... I know if I boot from CD rescue mode I can get the same result, but, people in thouse places are not especialized in linux boxes. That is because I want to boot from a floopy, now I also know it's imposible, but, Can I make a CD boot?, I just want something to boot my remote server, get running all services and later I reconstruct the RAID... understand me now? sorry my poor english! regards, israel

Mario, That is correct (at least on 4.0), and the appletalk kernel modules are not built, so you will have to build a custom kernel to use it. Once it the kernel is recompiled and appletalk is compiled, it works like a champ. Netatalk is not hard to compile. I'm a home user of CentOS (a desktop and a laptop) because I like the quality of the product and I love the cost. I'm a great believer in FOSS. That being said, I know that some of you use CentOS for production servers and (perhaps?) desktops as well. I've read at leat one comment like "I have 20 CentOS servers." My employer is a firm believer in RHEL - license costs are just a business decision. CentOS 4 with MySQL 4.1

Greetings all! I have built a new server with MySQL and have noticed that before even doing anything to it I found that the MySQL logins were much slower than the 4.0 server I used prior to it. After moving data over to it, the application, (JFFNMS) when it would login to it would take forever getting data from it. It would finally get to a point where MySQL would not respond to anything including MySQLAdministrator. So I removed the 4.1 version that came with CentOS 4, I downloaded and installed the latest 4.0 version from the MySQL website and installed it and it is very fast even after moving the data to it. The problem I have is that I need php-mysql and perl-DBD-MySQL and when I install these two rpms, it removes the MySQL-server and MySQL-client rpm's that I retrieved from the MySQL website. So I am at a loss of what to do. I would prefere to go with MySQL 4.1 just because that is what comes with CentOS 4, short of that I need php-mysql to work with 4.0. Databases and custome building of RPM's is beyond my capabilities. Any assistance will be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks Chris

system management - what do you use to manage your CentOS systems?

Greetings everyone. Let me preface this with the following, I know this is not specific to CentOS but I do value the input given by *many* of the users on this list. I can not think of a more appropriate place to ask these questions. Let me just break down my setup: 20 CentOS 4 servers, all running apache. The only things that are unique on each server are the network settings and the apache virtual host config files, other then that, they are identical. I'm not using any networked file systems, content is synchronized via rsync. NFS is not able to provide adequate performance in our environment. I wanted to get some feedback to see what other people here use to manage their CentOS systems, apply updates, roll out new software packages, update unique config files etc. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated! Hi, I've just installed a server with CentOS 4. This server is behind a proxy. I'm trying to import the RPM key. Already set http_proxy variable to: export "http_proxy"=http://proxy.xpto.com:3128 Truth is, command # rpm --import http://mirror.centos.org/centos/RPM-GPG-KEY-CentOS-4 just leaves me hanged. NFS over ssh problems

I've got a setup where I run nfs over ssh on several distros, and it's been working like a charm on suse, mandrake, redhat 7-9 etc, but I've been unable to get it to work on CentOS. First I set up ssh portforwarding using: /usr/bin/ssh root@<remotehost> -L 250:irc.dynip.no:2049 -f sleep 60d & Then I mount using the following params in fstab: localhost:/somedir /somedir nfs rw,tcp,hard,intr,port=250,mountport=251 0 0 I can telnet to port 250/251 and it answers like expected. I can also see the packets travelling through the tunnel using tcpdump. However, if I try to mount the dir (mount -a), I get this error: mount to NFS server 'localhost' failed: server is down. Sniffing on port 22 when running the mount command, nothing happens. It kinda seems like it ignores the port/mountport options. Any ideas? Regards, Harald

I guess if the MTA knew how to deal with that it would be a very good solution. I will have to do some testing to see how it reacts to the scenario. It all comes back to a few key points: 1) Refusing mail based on HELO not matching the ptr record is not RFC compliant, but it is not uncommon. 2) There are some vanity issues with someone who cares what the mail headers say in them. As someone else said, if they are expecting that, they should expect to pay for it. 3) All of the RFCs pertaining to this were written in a much more trusting time, and as we are seeing, they need to be revisited. 4) There are some easy to do HELO checks that can eliminate a large number of spammers and misconfigured MTAs. I do think that the RFCs need to address dynamic address space more sufficently. I think that the one proposal where the source IP must be listed under a particular record type in DNS will go a long way towards addressing many of these issues. IMO, none of the cost based solutions I have read such as "postage" or something mildly CPU intensive will accomplish anything but a mess. CentOS 3.4 to CentOS 4

I have upgraded to CentOS 4 from 3.4. I am having trouble figuring out the mail changes. Under 3.4, Imap and POP were modules that xinetd controlled. Under 4.0, I have a choice of either Cyrus-Imapd or Dovecot. After googling all week, I was about to get my user account authenticated under Cyrus and the saslpasswd program, as well as dovecot. My problem is that they don't know where my mail is. I run postfix, and have mail delivered to /var/spool/mail/%u. I put this into Cyrus' mail directory but it still doesn't see anything. Dovecot always tries to chdir to the user's home directory, ignoring anything I put into dovecot.conf concerning mail locations. Any ideas? Thanks.

So, hostco doesn't setup a ptr record for it. This does not make Acme Widget or Hostco any more likely to be spammers, it just makes you more likely to drop their mail. Now, the other side of that... Foospam wants to send out 87 bazillion mail messages to everyone about fooagra. So, they set their mail server to helo with fooco.com and set the ptr record to be mail.fooco.com and they just danced right by all of this with very minimal effort. For that matter, you can use whatever ptr your ISP sets up for you. The whole accountablity thing is a fallacy. I can buy a domain right now for $8, put whatever I want in the whois info and just use that for the ptr record part, it could be a throwaway domain for all I care. At the end of the day, it bought the person reciving the spam nothing. Reverse DNS or not, you can see what IP the mail came from, you can tell who is the owner of that IP and they can find out what user has that IP. The problem is that most of them are simply unwilling to do so, they ignore mail to the abuse address or just give you a canned answer. CentOS4 laptop touchpad erratic operation

I've just put up CentOS4 on my HP ze4630us laptop, and the installation produced only two problems of note, both related to X operations. 1. The installer refused to allow 1024x768 resoultion for the screen. After install, manually setting the resolution in xorg.conf was no problem. 2. Erratic touchpad operation. This unit has a synaptic touchpad. I've also noted similar problems on my previous Gentoo install (also 2.6 kernel and xorg). Never really resolved this. When scrolling across a screen in a browser panel where there are multiple links, the mouse will trigger click operations all on its own, so it's difficult to reach the link you want without inadvertently opening another link that you scroll past. In googling, I didn't have much luck finding a matching problem; nor did I have much luck earlier. Most of the problems reported seemed to be "touchpad unable to respond to clicks", i.e. the opposite of my problem. The installer generated the following mouse definition in xorg.conf: Section "InputDevice" Identifier "Mouse0" Driver "mouse" Option "Protocol" "IMPS/2" Option "Device" "/dev/input/mice" Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5" Option "Emulate3Buttons" "yes" EndSection Has anyone else seen this type of problem with a touchpad, and does anyone have knowledge of a fix? Not everyone wants someone to be able to look at the mail headers and know what company is hosting them, particularly a business. Centos 4 & Cisco 350 MiniPCI Wireless

I have an IBM Thinkpad with this beastie in it. The card was immediately recognized and uses the airo driver. No matter what I do, I can't get it to successfully connect to my WAP. Sometimes it sees the access point (as evidenced by an iwlist wifi0 scan seeing the network) and sometimes I can actually get it to connect ( as evidenced by the iwlist command showing the WAP ID). Eventually the connection between the card and the AP simply dies. I'm not new to wireless and have had no problems manually configuring other wireless cards to work properly, so I have gone through most of the gyrations. Right now I've fallen back to an Orinoco silver. Google doesn't seem to be helpful in this endeavor (lots of hits but most having to do with the 2.4 kernel series) so my question is relatively simple: Before I waste an inordinate amonut of time trying to make this thing work I would like to know if anyone else has had success here? If so, could you tell me the firmware version of your card? Even if you can't I'd be delighted to hear that the fact that the kernel manages to turn on my wireless light isn't the kernel's way of teasing me. Thanks very much! BK

I typically would comment out the line in sendmail.mc that went something like 'accept unresolvable domains' I tried using smtpd_sender_restrictions = reject_unverified_sender reject_unverified_smtp and this seems a bit too restrictive and got some bounces on legitimate senders so I'm thinking that this is perhaps a bit more apropos... smtpd_helo_restrictions = permit_mynetworks, reject_invalid_hostname does this make sense? How do I get this set up? spamassassin -D --lint shows me an error... debug: bayes: no dbs present, cannot tie DB R/O: /root/.spamassassin/bayes_toks and with no db present, it doesn't learn. Is there something simple that I'm missing? Craig

[CentOS] Lost all info in a file server because of LVM - HEEEELP ME, please

Hi, I'm totally desperated. I have this file server with a total of about 200 GB of my user's files. The server has "3 in 1" discs, using LVM. Somehow, i don't know why, the LVM info is gone and i cannot access my file system. I had in LVM: sda1 -> /boot sda2 -> / sda3 -> /home (where all the Samba shares resides). sda4 -> swap sdb sdc Tha machine now starts with a single partition ( / ) mounted on /dev/root From there i can manually mount under /mnt partitions "/boot", "/", but NOT "/home". Trying to mount /home, i always get the busy error. I cannot unmount the "/" on /dev/root, obviously. How can i (if possible) restore the LVM info ? I have a backup from Sunday, so, it's really not a life or death case, but nevertheless it is a real annoiance, and the server is already down for 24 hours :( Any help would be apreciated. Odd Question... MAX Ram Disk Size

Greetings, Before I get slammed, I've looked all over the internet for the answer to this (googled and more) and haven't been able to find what I'm looking for. Here's what I need. I have a server that I use to hold workstation images. I use a Linux boot CD combined with some scripts I wrote and some disk imaging software to allow me to image windows workstations. Anyway, when I roll out a new workstation Image, I may roll it out to 20 or 30 computers at once, all using the same image file (base build). I want to put that image file on a RAMDISK on my server. The image file is between 3 and 4 gig. I have 6 gig in the server, so plenty of memory. I modified GRUB to increase the size of my ram disk... First I started with a 200mb, that worked group, formatted, etc. Then I tried 1gig - everything looks like it works but when I mount it, it tells me the volume is not formatted or has invalid super blocks. Perhaps I'm exceeding the allowable built-in ramdisk limit, but I couldn't find any docs anywhere that would tell me what that limit was. Does anyone know of an alternative ramdisk product, that does not load at boot time, where I could do what I need (as described above)? Or does anyone know how I can get a 4-gig Ramdisk to work properly? I'm running the new CentOS 4 on the server. Thanks for any help. Thanks everyone for the great INFO... This was EXACTLY what I needed and had a very hard time finding out. The mount -t tmpfs -o size=1g none /ramdisk worked perfectly. I needed temporary ram space to use as disk space. Thanks! Just to explain further, the "images" are not ISO's... These are hard drive images, like GHOST files (only using a Linux free application). But to further explain, even if I mounted an ISO, there would still be disk IO.. I'm trying to eliminate the disk I/O from the equation so I can be downloading 20 or 25 machines at the same time. Since the server us a dual 2.0gig Xeon and I have gig all the way from the server to the desktop.. This should scream! Thanks again. You people have to stand up and _TELL_ me what kind of hardware _IS_ working, so we would know more than already know - 43p works. I can't believe that all those, who installs, does have 43p too? Please? Something, so if it's actually working on something else than already known 43p, we'd really like to hear about it. If it's not working, we'd still ike to hear about it as one can't fix anything not known to be broken. I thought I'd share this with you guys:- Been working/testing on the DEV release of SME7a3 based on CenTOS (on VMWARE), see contribs.org. Pretty neat I must say, most daemons (DNS, DCHP, SMB-PDC, LDAP, IMAP, POP, Web Admin) are preconfigured. I've got phpGroupware, WebERP, KnowledgeTree + other running on the same box (VMWARE). I've always had a challenge with manually configuring listeners etc and this has saved me hours/days on the Development I'm working on.' I would add the below: -Recommend using CentOS 4.0 -Use squid rpm, no tar (this is for new users I'm guessing). -Recommend using etherape and iptraf (available as rpms) for a graphical overview of traffic. http://etherape.sourceforge.net/ -Recommend the use of chkrootkit, and TCP Wrappers (at the least put ALL: ALL EXCEPT PARANOID in /etc/hosts.allow) to protect servers. -Provide some information about how to protect the whole network from spyware with the /etc/hosts file (a nice side benefit from doing DNS proxy). http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm -A *huge* disclaimer on running squid on a machine with a public interface. -Consider using webmin to manage this outside a GUI. -fwlogwatch can parse log files nicely. http://fwlogwatch.inside- security.de/ Biggest issue I have with your setup: -I wouldn't use Guard Dog as the GUI setup - it is very nice, but inflexible and not really meant for what you are doing. Try kmyfirewall instead if you want a GUI for iptables. It offers near complete control of iptables functions. If you can get along with using webmin, try shorewall. *If* this is going to be in a bigger than SOHO (+ 30 PC) network, go with shorewall. Every list goes through this sort of thrashing: 1. There are some users who are too self-important to remember back when they were once n00bs. From what I've heard, these are the bulk of users on the Debian lists <grin>. 2. There are others who can provide the simple answer AND a gentle reminder where the n00b might find the answer him/herself. What's the old saying: "You ctch more flies with honey than with vinegar." 3. Then there is the group (actually, subcategory of 1) who never has any time and can't be bothered to read anything other than super-intellectual stuff and who fills the replies with "your're wasting our time." I do not know if i am seeing things, but it seems there has been a lot of double posting lately. It seems it has been only a short while since it started. i thought it might only been some people, though i am seeing an increasing amounts of this lately. Well, this conversation started with me I just asked two silly questions and no where did i mention panicking or sound begging ? The reason i asked them from team was 1) i can get right answer in right time ( as there are so many distros of linux) 2) i was so eager to learn and run apache and tomcat on linux that these small things were coming as hindrance to my main aim Regarding, spoon fed, i dont think if anyone can reach the stage of joining the CENTOS mailing list is spoon fed if i can join this mailing list, install Centos on my own, run apache and run tomcat, if i can code java and restart application servers, i dont think i am spoon fed Of cours i dont know how to start centos from command line because I am not a system administrator and never was and never did. I think aim of this mailing list is to help new users get right answers in right time. It isn't that you are wrong, as much as there is a perfectly valid reason not to answer those questions. Because then people will ask them. And return and ask another. They are all simple except that you become a resource, and that grows. Support Irc channels are the easiest to see this in. It isn't that it's difficult to answer these questions, it just gives no incentive for people to try and learn the answer themselves, which stunts their growth and makes them lean more on assistance. Access to Archives

I just joined the list and am trying to look at the archives. The page http://lists.caosity.org/mailman/listinfo/centos has a link to the archives that resolves to http://localhost.localdomain/pipermail/centos/ which of course produces an error "The connection was refused when attempting to contact localhost.localdomain." What am I missing, and how can I review the archives to keep from asking obviously answered questions? Thanks. Gerry

Centos 4.0 and Named

I am failing to get Named started. I copied my named.custom and zone files to a diskette from my 3.3 build. I installed 4.0 from scratch and did the updates. I edited /etc/named.conf (which I realize is a link) to include named.custom I cp named.custom into /etc (all of this was done while logged in as root) When I try to start named from the services GUI (using GNOME) and I get this error: named failed. The error was: Starting named: /etc/named.conf:67: open /etc/named.custom: file nto found /etc/init.d/named: line 56: [: too many arguements [FAILED] So what is wrong. /etc/named.custom is there. permissions look right. All done as root. Am I suppose to put named.custom in the croot area along with named.conf and set up a symbolic link (which I have forgotten how to do, as I haven't done it since '93)?

Original yum.conf If I do a yum update: No actions to take If I do a yum upgrade a machine that has no spamassassin: No actions to take If I do a yum upgrade on 2 machines that have perl-Mail-SpamAssassin-3.0.1-1 installed (3rd party rpm, more recent than the CentOS/RHEL one): I will do the following: [update: spamassassin 2.55-3.4.i386] I will install/upgrade these to satisfy the dependencies: [deps: perl-Time-HiRes 1.38-3.i386] Is this ok [y/N]: Could someone please explain this behavior? Why is yum upgrade trying to upgrade a package that is a newer 3rd party rpm, with a different name? Thanks, Francois

Yes, we use it for exactly that. It really does work well, removing nearly all spam and virus scanning with multiple virus engines. Dean

Mailscanner and Postfix

I have just followed Johnny Hughes' excellent walk-through on how to install Postfix, MailScanner with ClamAV and Spamassassin and it seems to be running fine during in house testing, but I want to make sure that it behaves itself when it goes live serving about 250 users; I have read comments elsewhere both for and against the use of Mailscanner with Postfix, and when I mentioned the subject on the Postfix group I was informed I *WILL* have mail dupes and missing mail so can I have some observations from people using this setup with Centos (3.3). Also, is there a good follow up to JH's article about using that configuration with virtual mailboxes or is it easy to take the setup as outlined and 'convert' it to use them? I'm on a steep learning curve as I pull myself away from the M$ camp! Thanks

Sorry, I can not comment on Postfix as I use sendmail with MailScanner but from what I read on the MailScanner mailing list there are lots of people running a huge amount of mail through it with Postfix.
