Official Announce List Notification

As you will know from recent posts, CentOS is separating from cAos to become an independent project. As part of that change we are implementing new mailing lists. The new Announce List is now active. All Errata, release announcements and the like will only be posted to the announce list. Once a day, a digest of the Announce List will be posted to the main CentOS list. That should be a compromise that everyone can live with (or that may be just wishful thinking on my part). http://lists.centos.org/mailman/options/centos-announce The announce list is moderated, and posts are only allowed by CentOS- Developers. If you are subscribed to the announce list, you can find out the password assigned to you by having it emailed to you from the above link. We were not able to transfer previous options to this list, so login and reset your options if required. The archive of posts has been transferred across to the new list manager, and posts to the old address will make it to the new list. Regards, Johnny Hughes

Ryan, I'm not sure exactly what you mean by ``editing'', but if you mean ``adding'' and ``removing'' entries, I found ``Editing GNOME2 Menus in Red Hat Linux 8.0 and 9'', at <http://www.bluethingy.com/linux/rh8menu.html> to be pretty helpful in understanding how this stuff works. It seems like the information in that article applies to CentOS 3 (and, presumably, also to CentOS 4). (Yes, I happened to be tinkering with the menu stuff when I saw your message.) RHEL Un question

Please excuse my ignorance, since I have not used any RedHat (enterprise or otherwise) until Fedora FC3 (a few weeks) and now CentOS4 (permanently). I keep finding references to Un (I believe it's up to U5 now) in references to bugfixes, etc for RHEL. I presume (?) these are dot releases after the initial release? Is there anything equivalent for CentOS, or is this RedHat only behavior? yum stalls <?>

I just installed a fresh 3.3 system (because those are the ISO's I had on hand). Upon running yum update, it starts to download headers and then stalls. I hit Ctl-C and it continues to download about 4-5 more headers and stalls. I hit Ctl-C again and it pulls a few more headers. Anyone seen this and/or know how to fix it? TIA Mike

Kernel Question

OK- A dumb question. Will a "generic"(kernel.org) kernel work with Centos 4? My reason for asking- I'm needing to upgrade from RH9, and would rather go ahead and go with 4 for the 2.6 kernel, but I need a patched kernel (Win4Lin), and I'm not sure they will offer a prepatched version (though they probably will for EL4). Perl wierdness.

Ok, trying to install amavisd-new from Dag. Getting into a lot of problems, all of which seem to stem from Perl dependency issues. I have built several of the required modules by hand, but then got down to perl-MIME-tools. It builds FINE, but will not install. Why? Turns out, the perl RPM 'provides' perl(MIME::QuotedPrint)=3.01 but the module itself is 3.03. Build a perl module against MIME::QuotedPrint and you get a Requires:perl(MIME::QuotedPrint)>=3.03, which fails on installation. php-snmp *UPDATE*

Thank you to all the people that responded. I found a php.spec file for EL3 and modified the php.spec file that came with the php source rpm from the CentOS mirros. Built and installed the php-snmp rpm and it is working great!!! For anyone that would like to have a copy for themselves can find it at http://traffic.wonderwave.net I will leave it up for a week or two so act fast. I also posted the the original spec file, the one with snmp support and a diff file showing the difference between the two. Thanks again to all you helped me out. Dan

Has RedHat... oops... those folks in North Carolina decided to drop support for Pentium II machines in EL4? I have this old Compaq 3000R 300mHtz P2 which will never die, which makes for a really nice test base for new releases. Maybe the EL people have decided their subscriptions per year cost more than this server is worth and no one in their right mind would install EL4 on such equipment? Well, they are wrong, I am very left handed which makes me one of the ones who thinks in their right mind! Thanks for all the hard work! John Hinton

Hi all, I have four servers (one with redhat 7.3, two with CentOS 3.4 and one with CentOS 4 for testing). I would like to do a partial package mirror with os, updates, contrib branches and so on. Anybody knows if exists any tool for redhat based distros, like apt-proxy in debian world ( that donwloads packages on demmand), that supports this feature?? I see yam tool from dag repository, but it needs that do a full mirror ... and I don´t have as much disk space. An announce list is standard fare, not like we are talking about something that would be terrible to maintain here. Create a list that does not allow posts, send it a message when a new package is available. Boom, 0 administration, almost 0 storage, very little resources. permanent ulimit -n on CentOS 3.4

Hi! Question from the novice. I have to permanently increase number of opened files ( ulimit -n 16384 and ulimit -Hn 16384) for some application. I did custom kernel based on https://www.redhat.com/docs/manuals/enterprise/RHEL-3-Manual/sysadmin-guide… and application documentation ( written for RH 9), no error during all makes but I have panic during the boot. ( It's Dell SC1425, dual CPU, 2GB RAM, i686-based kernel). Is there any other way to do it ? Thanks, Michael

4.0_rc1 new install fails to enable mixer devices

I've just installed 4.0_rc1 to evaluate and compare with FC3 for a local project. The installation and initial usage of the two distros is almost identical. up2date and yum work well on either. The one problem I have is with sound. CentOS has loaded snd_intel8x0 and all the usual suspects, but the mixers (GNOME volume controls, etc., do not work because there is no /dev/xxx for the mixer device. FC3 did not have this problem, and sound worked AOK, or at least as good as it gets for my miserable builtin card. I might note that I had a similar problem on gentoo (which also uses udev), and I have to preload some of the alsa modules or I get the same results. Does anyone have experience with this on CentOS? I haven't done a comparison of the alias files, etc., between CentOS and FC3. Is there a way to preload modules on CentOS prior to udev/hotplug action? TIA, -- Collins

Migration

Hello all! I'm new to the list. I just upgraded 3 White Box Linux servers (database, application and internet) yesterday to Centos 3.4 using the info in http://centos.org/modules/smartfaq/faq.php?faqid=19. Very easy, and that was a very helpfull document! The decision was based in the speed of updates, really much faster in Centos! Is there a similar way to upgrade a Fedora Core 1 server to Centos 3.4? Would it be possible? I saw some messages in the list about it (archives) but I don't know if in the time the version of Centos was 3.4, and some people said that it whas not possible because would be a downgrade of some packages... How to create a CD/DVD

Hi! Assuming I have all the files (basically I've downloaded the ISOs) of CentOS 4 (RC1 for now, but 4.0 in the future) how do I recreate the ISO images - both to regain the original 4 CDs (less important) - and to achieve a DVD image (more important but can probably be guessed from the answer to how to make the CDs). Any takers? [note I've burned many CDs - I'm basically asking for the command line to mkisofs et al to get an as near bit-perfect as possible ISO from source files only] Furthermore, even though I'm very new here, I'd suggest splitting up this mailing list into announce lists for the various releases (ie centos-announce-3.4 and the like, for updates/etc, with no posting by non-admins/maintainers) and a general discussion list (possibly also split into centos-2/3/4/all). It's running on my main database server :-) A dual xeon 3,6 ht - 2gb ram - 4 x 300Gb hd (md raid) 2x Gigabit lan nic. Interbase 6.01 and Informix 9.4 are running smoothly :-) Great job guys !

System Beep

Has anyone else noticed that their normal system beep (from XBell() and the like) no longer works after upgrading to CentOS 4? missing fonts for centos 4?

Oracle Driver for Linux?

I have a Zope + DCOracle2 setup, and I was thinking of moving to Zope + eGenix ODBC (which will use unixODBC) however that still leaves me lacking a driver to connect this to the Oracle server. There are a number of variously priced commercial drivers out there like EasySoft, Merant, OpenLink, etc. Someone built upon a previous open source EasySoft driver: http://fndapl.fnal.gov/~dbox/oracle/odbc/ Anyone have any suggestions/experience? -Mike

keepalived on centos 3.4

Is anyone successfully using dag's keepalived-1.1.10-1.1.el3.rf on centos 3.4? It's giving me some strange issues (LVS Topology never shows up, even though I can manually set it w/ ipvsadm) Attempting to rebuild it has been less than successful, as anyone who tries will see in their appropriate BUILD/keepalived-1.1.10/config.log and in the rpmbuild output. It complains about openssl and kssl.h... (see bellow) However, I have the latest openssl-devel and krb5-devel rpms installed. Before I spend any more time on this. Upgrading FC2 -> Centos4RC1 (possible, but messy)

This was my experience with upgrading, your mileage may vary especially if it's in kilometers. This is what I had to do to get my system running again. ############## In order to attempt this upgrade, I had to use "linux upgradeany", a mode not listed for the installer CDs. My first problem was I could no longer boot the system after the upgrade. My grub menu showed my old FC2 kernel, Fedora Core (2.6.10-1.14_FC2), but not the kernel for Centos. Oracle Apps on Linux

Hi folks, I seem to remember someone asking how to install Oracle Apps on Linux so here goes a quick and dirty how-to:- 0 - You will need access to Metalink (Oracle's support site) for downloading patches and read documentation on line. 1 - Size up your Linux box to at least 1Gb memory and 200Gb of disk space. I'm assuming you have a Pentium 4 at around 3GHz. 2 - Download and install if not already installed compat-gcc-7.3-2.96.126. Fedora Core 3 doesn't come with it but you can get it from Fedora Core 2. WBEL and CentOS should have it installed by default. 3 - Download the latest version of Oracle Applications from edelivery.oracle.com. Latest release available is 11.5.10 and comes in 46 zip files totalling a 25Gb. It expands to about the same size since there's a lot of compressed files in it. 4 - Create a new group called dba. Create a new user called oracle and assign dba as the primary group. 5 - Log in as oracle and edit the .bash_profile to add the variable LD_ASSUME_KERNEL=2.4.19. Make sure you export it. 6 - Start unloading the zip files and make sure you follow the instructions from Oracle so that they end up in a nice tree under /Stage11i. Review the Installation guide. 7 - Rename the /usr/bin/unzip to whatever you want to call it and copy the unzip from /Stage11i/startCD/Disk1/rapidwiz/unzip/Linux. 8 - Change to /Stage11i/startCD/Disk1/rapidwiz and execute RapidWizVersion. If it is not 11.5.10.33 you will need to download patch 4132885 from Metalink. Unzip the files under /Stage11i/startCD as it will overwrite the contents of Disk1. 9 - Download patch 3006854 from Metalink to fix an OS library problem. 10 - Start your installation by running /Stage11i/startCD/Disk1/rapidwiz/rapidwiz. Choose single box installation. 11 - Review the log file for any errors. Fix if required. 12 - If you're using an SQL Client from outside the Linux box you will need to comment some lines in your $ORACLE_HOME/network/admin/SID_Servername/sqlnet.ora file (replace SID with your chosen SID, mine is PROD, default is VIS) and (replace Servername with your hostname). Look for the lines with tcp.validnode_checking and tcp.invited_nodes; put a '#' in the beginning. Restart your listener. 13 - Open your browser and point it to http://yourservername.yourdomainname:8000. Log in as operations/welcome and start hacking away :-) Let me know if you're stuck with anything and I'll do what I can to help. Slow logout from gnome

I don't know if anyone else has had this problem but on a number of CentOS-3 boxes I had a problem when you log out from X/Gnome it would take ages (> 1 min) to log out. Saving the session made it quicker for the next logout, but the culprit appears to be the rhn-applet. Uninstall that rpm and problem solved. The connection always go to triying and nothing happens. Maybe problem with routes? Iptables? Hello I have at this time a w3are 7006-2 controller in my server Dual Xenon 2.8Ghz . But now i will change it to a 9500S-4LP SATA Raid Controller. I have seen in lsmod that the 7000 driver is loaded. scsi_mod 115112 3 [sg 3w-xxxx sd_mod] My question Is it possible to running this card with centos 3.3? I have seen this at 3ware http://www.3ware.com/KB/article.aspx?id=12706 But there is only for 32 bit Athlon/Opteron computers. How can i get a 3w-9xxx driver for centos 3.3? And what i must do exactly to running these card with centos 3.3 ( installation / kernel ) thanks for every help Sven Sommerlatt

The warm and fuzzes was mostly towards the rackmount I had put FC3 and FC2 on. FC2 crapped out when the 2.6 kernel was introduced, Fc3 wouldn't even boot past grub. If I had the time I would investigate the situation more, but I'm pretty much the only tech for 250+ desktops and other IT duties. Kickstart is on my long list of things to do. I'm using ghost since, it seems(ed?) to work and its an application my boss is accustomed to. RHEL 4 Update

I'm not so sure if I'm asking right question so please forgive me; I have RHEL AS 4 media with me here; my company have an active subscription to RHN from for a limited number of servers only. If I add more servers more than allowed channel subscription; up2date doesn't work as you know. That's why I'm introducing CentOS to my company. Now, I just wondering, is there any way I can update a RHEL box using other means rather than RHN? Excluding the manual FTP download and manual RPM installation; is there any other source and means I can use. Again, I hope I'm asking this question safely here. Since I asked already similar question to RH mailing lists; and they arrogantly pointed me here in CentOS - well thanks to them; I found a new home and a new distro. Regards, str

problem with 4 RC1

Has anyone else had this problem? On my laptop, I am currently running 3.4, no problems (runs really fast). When I formatted and upgraded to 4.0, it made it until the end, then locked up at the "preparing for first boot"..... Eventually I had to cold reboot, and it wouldn't load the kernel at subsequent boots. Back to 3.4 and working fine. I burned another set of CDs thinking it was bad media, but with the same results. Any ideas if this is a bug?

apcupsd on CentOS

Has anyone tried running apcupsd on CentOS with a usb UPS? Just curious since I'm putting together a system like this and I noticed in the apcupsd docs it say: "Linux 2.4 series kernels older than 2.4.22 do not bind the USB device to the proper driver. This is evidenced by /proc/bus/usb/devices listing the UPS correctly but it will have "driver=(none)" instead of "driver=(hid)". This affects RHEL3, among others." I noticed the latest kernel is 2.4.21.xxx for CentOS and just wondered if this was going to cause me problems. Thanks in advance.

Looking at the output of rpm -qa --qf "%{vendor} - %{name} %{version} - %{arch}\n" on a CentOS 3.4 box, I noticed that package tora-1.3.9.2 (i386) lists the upstream vendor that shall not be named in the "vendor" field. Hi, when I use useradd of adduser in CentOS 3 or 4, the default shell a user gets /bin/bash. I want this to be changed to /bin/false for security reasons... How can I accomplish this? Thanks in advance for any help. -- Michiel

External yum and apt Repositories and CentOS4

Were looking to use yum 2.1's ability to store repository data in /etc/yum.repos.d/ as a means of pushing updates to our mirrors list. As an added feature, we want to host third party repository config in installable .rpm's into CentOS-Extras. So that enabling a new repository becomes as easy as "yum install <repo name>". Eg. 'yum install repo- dag'. Which would in turn drop the required repository information into /etc/yum.repos.d/, set the enabled flag, import the required gpg- key. We are looking for package repositories, with public access who would want to be included in this setup. All supported architecture's are welcome ( x86/ia32, x86_64, ia64, s390(x)) as well as testing ( ppc ) for yum repositories. We do have apt available on x86 and ppc, so if you have an apt repository that works with CentOS4 on these architectures, we're interested. If you run a repository or know of one which should be included : Reply to this post here with details or send me an email. There are a few things that we ask for. 1) The repository must be complete in itself or require no more than the CentOS4 base and CentOS4 updates to pull required dependencies. 2) All packages in the repository must be signed. And the key available via public key-servers. 3) You must have both meta data ( via createrepo ) as well as the Header info ( via yum-arch ) available. And lastly, I need some recommendations on what to call these .rpm's repo-<Repository Tag>.<ver>.rpm is one option. - K

Squirrelmail

I have an urgent (isn't it always the way!) need to set up webmail for one of our users. I intalled Squirrelmail, added /etc/httpd/conf.d/php.conf and etc/httpd/conf.d/php.conf/squirrel.conf to my webserver config (which is not RH stock) and ran the squirrelmail conf.pl I know nothing at all about php, so am having a hell of a time diagnosing the errors, and the squirrelmail.org site knows of no RH distro after 7.3 and has been wikispammed anyway. Google's not been helpful so far. I just installed CentRC1 on a Dell gx150 as a test. I'm running into the same problem I had with Fc3. I get a partition table error when trying to use ghost8 to create an image. Hi First off Centos is Great!! I have thin clients running under Centos with no problems at all ! My question is not a major problem - in my spare time I play a 3D demo Unreal Tournment 2003 , just wondering if anyojne knew why my 3D screensavers would have suddenly not work? My video card is Nvidia mX 4000 , no problem running the UT2003 Demo I have on it , but for some reason all I get is a black screen where my screensavers should be? cheers Mike

CentOS 4 (RC1) and VMWare

I successfully installed CentOS 4 (RC1) on a VMWare 4.5.2 virtual workstation last night. When creating the new virual machine, I told the VMWare wizard that I'd be installing RHEL3. I used the VMWare console to point the virtual CDROM drive at each of the downloaded ISO images as needed. The "time remaining" feedback while Anaconda ran was wildly inaccurate, but the whole process required only about 45 minutes (the host machine is a 2.8GHz P4 with 1.5GB RAM, I allocated 512MB RAM to the guest). At one point (during installing the pci utilities RPM) the installer seemed to be hung, but I suspended and resumed the guest workstation and that woke everything up again. On the first reboot, the setup wizard asked me to install the disk that was labeled Extras. I don't know which of the 5 ISO images that is, and couldn't find that info on the CentOS web site, so I skipped that step. However, that screen still makes reference to other disks that may have been obtained from Red Hat -- probably needs to be cleaned up. Also the wizard wanted me to register my RHN subscription, which I simply told it not to do. I then logged in and attempted to install the VMWare tools. This (expectedly) did not go entirely smoothly. The app launced from the CDROM icon on the desktop was unable to mount the tools virtual disk, and "mount" from a shell or non-X11 virtual console didn't work either. I had to select "Install ..." from the VMWare menu, then reboot in single user mode to avoid X11 startup, then mount the disk. After running the installer perl script, most of the tools work, but for X11 in particular I had to manually revert the /usr/X11R6/bin/X symlink to point back at Xorg, and restore the /etc/XF86Config file from /etc/X11R6/xorg.conf -- I then merged in the VMWare screen definitions from the XF86Config file written by the tools installer. Because I'm not using the vmware X server, the mouse does not move seamlessly on and off the vmware guest window; you have to manually grab/ungrab the pointer. Otherwise, though, xorg-x11 works just fine.

trouble installing CentOS

greetings, We are a couple of new CentOS users here. We have previous experience with RH and FC installations. Now we'd like to move up in the world to CentOS. We successfully installed the 3-CD set of CentOS-3 on a laptop this weekend. When the script instructed us to remove the installation media and reboot, we did that and then the system hung after text was displayed showing the stopping and restarting of the processes. (Background: We had to use the nofb option during the installation. I wonder if there's some way to pass that option to the kernel when we reboot, so as to get the final post-installation configuration script to work?) We think we might have a functional CentOS laptop now, but it's just hanging somewhere in the reboot sequence because of problems with the framebuffer and/or X. Has anyone had a problem like this before? (and solved it? :-) ) -- TIA, TT

CentOS-4 RC1 (i386) Bugfixes

All, There are 3 bugfix updates for CentOS-4 (RC1). 1. mod_perl needed to be recompiled after the RH errata for perl was incorporated, but it was not flagged by the perl update. ( https://bugzilla.caosity.org/show_bug.cgi?id=803 ) (thanks Joshua Hirsh) 2. httpd identified itself as Apache/2.0.52 (Red Hat) Server instead of CentOS ( https://bugzilla.caosity.org/show_bug.cgi?id=806 ) (thanks xspace) 3. up2date does not work with the CentOS-4 key, but requires the original vendor key. CentOS 4 X86_64?

Any word on the X86_64 build? I'm sitting on a server that I need to ship off to colo, I can probably wait 7-10 days before I have to ship, but I don't want to sit on the server if the X86_64 build is going to be outside that timeframe. Can someone please give a status update on the X86_64 build? - Sam

This product supports AMD Athlon, Athlon XP, Duron, Intel Pentium, Pentium Pro, Pentium II, Pentium III, Pentium 4 and Pentium Xeon processors. i586 based CPU's are also supported. Has anyone done an upgrade from RHEL3 to RHEL4? Is this likely to break a lot of things? How long will Centos be supporting version 3? I just installed Centos 3.4 two weeks ago! The only problem I'm having with Centos is that the perl is a bit old. I have errors with spamassassin. So far bugzilla for spamassasin is blaming it on the version of perl included in RHEL3 and bugs in the 'taint' code. I see that RHEL4 has newer Perl packages.

I am looking for a location where I can get tripwire to install and update via YUM. I know this is not the most secure thing but with the amount of machines that I have, I have not other choice. LinuxWorld Expo Update

Well, the first day was interesting. We a variety of questions from why do we do this, what's going on with RH, how come this is the first I've heard of you. And hundreds more. The good thing is that we've recieve a very positive response from everyone that visited our booth. Such a positive response that all our CentOS CD's are gone, and most of the cAos CD's are gone, and I've only got a few CentOS DVD's left. So if anyone can magically make 500 or 600 CentOS CD's magically appear, that would be great. :-> Anyway, I'll try to keep everyone posted during the day.
