I installed CentOS 4 Beta on an ATA disk to have a look at it, and on the same computer I have a Windows installation on a SATA disk. In the CentOS installation process it could see the operatingsystem on the SATA and everything looked good, it said something like "Other... /dev/sda" (not quite sure, it looked right so I didn't really take note of it). Now when I want to boot the windows installation is is attempting to boot from /dev/hdd, and that disk isn't even there? I had CentOS 3 on the ATA disk before and there it did the same thing, it's not a big problem as I just have to hit Esc and select the SATA before it starts booting, but shouldn't this be corrected somewhere? brgds Ulrik -- This message has been scanned for viruses and dangerous content by OpenProtect(http://www.openprotect.com), and is believed to be clean.

Dave, Is there a new kernel available for the X64 platform? Can you see this in the repo? It might explain why it hasn't upgraded. The i386 may have been the only updated kernel... Poll: what features are you lusting for in v4

While we're waiting on the keebler elves to make the new CentOS 4, what feature(s) are you most lusting after in RHEL/CentOS 4? For me: - official Mysql 4!!! ProFTP -> vsFTP Configuration Options

I am moving from a server from running Red Hat 7.2 (with ProFTP) to Centos 3 (with vsFTP). There is a setting in ProFTP that lets me set the default ftp login directory for a specific user and I would like to do the same with vsFTP. The reason being is I have a 'webadmin' user that I use for uploading web content. I am thinking I could make the home directory of the webadmin /var/www in the /etc/passwd file but I would rather it just be for FTP and leave the login home as /home/webadmin. In ProFTP this was set in /etc/proftpd.conf like so: DefaultRoot / webadmin DefaultChdir /var/www webadmin Does anyone know how I can do that? I would like the settings for the other users to work as they are now. I have been looking at chroot_list_enable, and chroot_list_file files but I don't think that is quite what I am looking for (They are both commented out by default). I may be wrong. upgrade FC3 -> CentOS-4.0-Beta

I have two boxes I want to upgrade hedwig is in a DC in Texas so I have no physical access. installed RHEL-3.1 adhoc upgrades with WBEL-3.1 packages (before I discovered yum and apt-rpm) dist upgrade to FC2 using apt-rpm rock-sand is a local development box installed FC3 on one partition installed FC2 on one partition I want to get both machines running CentOS 4.0 rock-sand is my practice machine, so I want to pretend I don't have physical access. In CentOS-3.4-Server.iso there is a pkgorder.txt with a list of the packages in (I assume) the order they should be upgraded. But there is no such file in the CentOS-4.0 distribution. Should I just use the same order but with the new version numbers? What issuses has anyone had with the move to udev?

To correct your immediate issue, add default_tkt_enctypes = des-cbc-crc des-cbc-md5 default_tgs_enctypes = des-cbc-crc to the [libdefaults] section of /etc/krb5.conf Additionally, to get ssh access working I needed to disable the use of privileged separation for sshd. Dag, I think you are taking what RedHat Legal says too literally. Yes, they SAY this is about confusion, but I do not think it is really about confusion. Hi, First some general explanations about what this will be. There is this 's390(x)' in the Subject: and that will mean it's bi-arch annouce conserning both - s390 and s390x. If there is for example only 's390', it's about 31bit version only. hi, i'm new to linux. right now i'm using centos 3.3. i want to upgrade to centos 3.4. i haven't used yum before. i have to go through a proxy to access the internet. so i thought it isn't able to access the proxy. after some searching on the net i could set the http proxy in the /etc/profile file. i used the following lines in the file(with the actual ip address and port ofcourse). set "http://my.domain.name:port/" export proxy_http="http://my.domain.name:port/" when i became the super user and tried the command 'yum install centos-yumcache', i got the messages attached below. I know with vnc you can access virtual desktops, but is there a way to view the current desktop on a kde session? I tried changing the .vnc/xstartup and added the startkde & at the end to get the gui working, but can only get virtual desktops to show. or if there is a different software to use that someone else might know about. The CentOS team has released CentOS 3.4 (Final) for the ia64 architecture. This product supports machines with the Intel® Itanium2 processor. This release includes all updates and errata up to February 11th, 2005. problem with plesk on centos

I really didn't realize that I had installed perl from this third-party. Would it be possible to run this without breaking anything? I have ecommerce stores running. yum remove perl-5.8.5-9.rhel3.art and then run the updater within Plesk to install their perls plus all the updates from Plesk? NEXT: un-tar.gz the files to directories in home go to your kernel source directory: edit Makefile to read the same as the installed kernel (uname -r) (delete the word "custom" at the end of the line: EXTRAVERSION = -27.0.2.Elcustom) run make mrproper run make oldconfig run make dep run make clean The above sets up the kernel source so you can build and install the i2c and lm sensors drivers correctly. cd to i2c directory under /home run make clean run make all run make install cd to lm sensors directory under /home run make clean run make all run make install do an extra depmod -a (just in case :) ) ignore any unresolved symbols messages if you get them run sensors-detect and read the outputs carefully test the lines that the sensors-detect script tells you to add to rc.local one at a time to make sure the appropriate drivers load successfully. If they do you're all set. Next: Just add the lines required to /etc/modules.conf and /etc/rc.d/rc.local and reboot. Your i2c and lm sensors stuff will start at power up. You can test the output with the sensors command. You might want to look in the /home/lmsensors ( cd /home; find . -name "sensors*.*" ) directories for the newer sensors.conf file and copy it to /etc. Modify the new one to give you the output you want. CPU temperature?

Has anyone gotten lm_sensors to work on a CentOS3.3/RHEL3 box? I think I'm having CPU temperature-related problems, and wanted some way to monitor it. I believe lm_sensors does this, but can't seem to figure out how to get it to work. I already did "yum install lm_sensors" but when I run sensors-detect, it complains: Couldn't open /proc/bus/i2c?!? at /usr/sbin/sensors-detect line 2970, <STDIN> line 3. I googled around, but there appear to be more questions than answers. I'd appreciate any help. FYI, this CentOS3.3 server is remotely managed.managed. johnn

Hi Everyone, Sorry to post right out of the gate but I'm having problems running yum upgrade on a new centos 3.4 install. I performed a minimal install of centos, this means I did a custom install but unchecked everything including cups. Error tells me to clean or rm the file...tried both to no avail. Anyone else run into this issue? How do I get beyond it? SATA Raid - final

Thanks for all the advice on setting up software RAID with SATA drives - especially to Morten Tormoen for the information on speeding up the re-sync. I have now had time to go back to the machine and start again: I now have one 300GB SATA drive on the motherboard controller and one on the PCI card and they're currently re-syncing at 48445K/Sec and will be done in 90 mins - a big improvement on 250kB/sec!!! help with xargs and mv

I am trying to move a group of sendmail queue files into a special area and am developing s script to assist. The manual steps are: # Identify which messages to move mailq -qR<domain> > file1 # Select only lines with message ID strings grep '^[[:alpha:]][[:alnum:]]\{13\}' file1 > file2 # extract only the messages ID cut -b -14 file2 > file3 # prepend '*' to message IDs sed "s/^/\*/" file3 > file4 All of this works the way that I expect. What I now want to do is to mv all of the related files listed in file4 in the form "*messageid" to another directory. Using xargs I expected (naively) that the following construction would work: cat file4 | xargs mv /var/spool/mqueue/'{}' \ /var/spool/mqueue/offline (note that in the original this is all one line.) However, when I do this I get the error: mv: when moving multiple files, last argument must be a directory Try `mv --help' for more information. There is obviously something about xargs that I do not understand. In my imagination I see this xargs construction expanding to this: mv /var/spool/mqueue/*messageid1 /var/spool/mqueue/offline mv /var/spool/mqueue/*messageid2 /var/spool/mqueue/offline . . . mv /var/spool/mqueue/*messageidn /var/spool/mqueue/offline so that the qf and df files for each message are moved into the subdirectory offline. But this is obviously incorrect. Can anyone here point out to me what my misunderstanding is and how to get this to work? If this is not the forum for this kind of question then can someone with more experience point me to a mailing list that would be more suitable? It seems that there is a rule, but the rule gives if the matter is important enough. But you have to say "Sorry"? It seems that when a matter comes up that is important enough to inform everyone, one MUST cross post -- otherwise, you guarantee that lots of people will not get the message. Having to say "Sorry" to get a message out to everyone who needs to get the message seems silly to me. I would think that if the message is important enough and must get to everyone, one should be able to cross post without having to say "Sorry" -- saying "Sorry" is "silly". Rick

Mailman crons

Hi, The last RHEL3 update pack contains a mailman package. I'm using that on a new mailserver and found a little problem with cron when starting/ stopping the mailman service. RedHat moves the mailman crontab in and out every time, however, crond only notes the 'move in', not the 'move out. This is because the /etc/cron.d/ timestamp only changes by a 'move in'. My fix: add rm -f $DST_CRON_SCRIPT as the first line in the function RemoveCron() in /etc/init.d/mailman. [centos 3.4] e1000 and installation problem

Hello, I install Centos'es from PXE, with vmlinuz and initrd provided by images/pxeboot from the first CD of centos 3.4. The server is a PowerEdge 1850 with two integrated e1000 nic interfaces. So kernel is booting, then it comes to the screen which ask for one nic to do a dhcp query. I choose eth0, dhcp server reply well and then i get an ip address, dns'es, etc. And nothing else happen because the nic link is going down at this point !!! (no light, no way. ) I've tried with PXE install of centos 3.3, and all is working fine on this server.... Do you think there is a problem with the centos 3.4 "installation time" kernel ? I remember that centos 3.1 had problems about this nic too ... Any ideas ? Thank you ! -- Martin

It bears a careful read, and thought about whether a response is needed. The implication is that if there is any use of a mailman password in common with a password you 'care' about, you need to take appropriate action at once. Also some backends merge Bugzilla and mailman password stores, which can cause unexpected secondary effects. I have not seen a patch yet, and so one has to assume that the configs and passwords for all mailman moderated mailing lists are compromised. Samba print queues showing old jobs

We have a server running Centos-3 with all latest updates. The server hosts 3 printers for us which are accessed by various Windows clients. About 3 months ago we noticed that, after a cups update, if you looked at the print queues in Windows they would show old jobs that had long been printed. After a further cups update this quirk went away but it's just come backs again - possibly after the recent cups update. Or is it me!? Anything worth checking? Thanks Nigel Kendrick

CentOS 3.4 on Compaq Proliant

I am trying to install CentOS 3.4 on a Compaq Proliant 1600, and it hangs on probing monitor type when anaconda starts. I have tried running 'linux text' and manually installing drivers from the f2 options screen. Any ideas? Forgive me if this is an unbearably simple question, but I am new to linux. Mike

some things missing from addons directory

i was just trying to update a rh9 box to centos 3.4 and ran into a number of issues that i finally realized would be solved by pointing to the addons area. but there are still some things that crop up. one of them is doxygen-doxywizard. there is a new version of doxygen in the 3.4 base, but the addons has an older version, so the yum upgrade gets confused. i don't see php-manual in the addons directory at all, so that is probably not the same issue. with yum is there a way we could have a list of old packages like php-manual that just don't exist anymore and have it uninstall it? for now, i am just tracking down things and removing packages that can't be upgraded. having it all happen automatically would be nice :-).

swatch 3.1.1 & CentOS 3.4

I have need of the functionality of the "swatch" utility. Prior to the actual installation of swatch I used perl2rpm to create RPMs for the PERL modules not provided in CentOS. I got a clean 'make test' from the package so I know that everything is configured properly. The bottom line is that the utility appears to be broken. I can downgrade to version 3.0.8, which appears to work properly, but that version lacks the "threshold" feature that I need. My questions are thus: 1) Is anyone successfully using swatch 3.1.1 with CentOS? If so, what incantation did you need do to make it function properly? 2) Is there another product that you use that provides similar capabilities? Bind Issues

I'm running bind in a chroot environment. It seems that since the Redhat snafu which wrecked bind (yes, I had caching nameserver running as well but not anymore) I have been having problem with my slave nameservers retrieving updates from the master. Looking at the zone records, some are owned by root, some are owned by named. I'm now confused as to what the ownership should be and what permissions should be assigned. updating ALSA

Hi, I have installed CentOS 4 beta and everything works apart from the sound. Searching online I have found that Fedora Core 3 requires upgrading ALSA to the very latest version for sound to work on this laptop, that probaly means that I need to upgrade ALSA. Is there anytwhere I can get updates RPMs/SRPMs or do I have to compile the updates? AFAIK alsa is now part of the kernel, will this cause much trouble for future upgrades? Hi John. Normally in the redhat setup the named process runs as the named user. This can be seen by running `ps -aux | egrep '[n]amed'` named 1661 0.0 0.2 40108 4836 ? S Jan31 0:25 /usr/sbin/named -u named -t /jail/named As you can see from the first column the user is named. Also the -u flag indicates the same. So if any of your slave zone files are owned by root they won't be writable by named. Raid 1 - further

Managed to get RAID 1 working but the sync process claimed it was going to take a serious amount of time. Looking at the stats revealed that the sync operation was running at a max of 250kB/sec which seems chronically low. Basic drive performance (hdparm) tests seemed OK so I guess the controller's not up to it? The info that came with the controller was all-but-non-existent but during a reboot I noticed that it flashed up a 'press CTRL-S to enter RAID setup' for about 1/4 sec and I managed to catch it and define card/BIOS-based RAID but this got confusing because when I restarted the server, Linux could still see 'hda' and 'hdc' rather that a single 'drive' as I expected. That's where I left it as I had to go sort out a couple of WIN2K servers (mumble mumble) with trojan infections! Next week I might try putting the drives on separate controllers again and re-setup Linux software RAID, otherwise I'll check out some of the recommendations I saw earlier for better controllers. bug: comps has wrong version number

hi, comps in rh9 is comps-9-0.20030313 while in the latest centos-3.4 it's comps-3.4centos.0-0.20050105 so the rh9 has higher version number which means this packages not upgraded during an upgrade to any version of centos. and yum also not upgrade this package. imho it's a bug. is there any way to find out what other packages is remain from some older rh version? yours. -- Levente "Si vis pacem para bellum!"

SATA - SIL3112A controller

Hi folks, I have just installed a PCI SATA controller based on the SIL3112A chipset into my Centos-3 (latest kernel patches applied) system and moved an existing (not the boot disk) SATA drive from the onboard controller to the SIL-based one so I can setup software RAID with two 300GB drives. Kudzu/Linux found the controller and drives straight away and they've appeared as 'hda' and 'hdc'. I've managed to partition hdc (hda was already setup) and format it - this was VERY slow and 'top' showed a significant amount of interrupt time. A bit of Googling found the right command to enable DMA (hdparm -X66 -d1 /dev/hda etc.) and this seems to have cured that problem! While Googling I found a LOT of info on the SIL controller and Linux but it was all for various kernels and linux versions - can anyone steer me in the right direction for info on this setup with RHEL3/Centos - specifically: 1) Should I just use the native SATA drivers like I'm doing now or are there better ones to use? 2) Are there any drivers that will use the BIOS-based software RAID or is using the Linux software RAID the way to go? 3) Tweaks and recommendations for the setup would be appreciated. The system is going to be used as a backup server for bacula with various clients dumping data via 512K broadband and so the performance of the RAID system does not need to be blazingly fast - hence the I'm seeing if the cheap (£14!) controller is Ok for the job before trying anything else. IBM x226 lockups, convert CentOS to RHEL 3.0

I have a friend who has been having an intermittent problem with his nice, shiny new IBM x226 server. It's a Xeon processor, 1.5Gb RAM, hardware RAID controller running CentOS 3 The system will will sometimes run for a couple of weeks, then simply lock up -- nothing on the console, no response to pings, no "caps-lock" lights, no kernel panic indicators, nothing in the logs to indicate the problem. Other times the machine may lock up three times in one day. At the last call to me he did report that the hard drive lights flicker every once in a while during one of the systems catatonic states, but other than that there was no indication of life. We have been in contact with IBM servicce and have run their hardware tests, which perform flawlessly. We have now come to the point where they claim that "CentOS is not a supported OS" and even though they acknowledge CentOS as a RHEL clone, they argue that there is no support path for them to follow to pursue possible software problems. The system owner is ready to buy RHEL, just to get service on his machine, but I am wondering -- how difficult is it to convert from CentOS to RHEL? Is it similar to the conversion from RHEL to CentOS or from WBEL to CentOS? I would like to avoid a complete reload. Does anyone else have any suggestions? TIA, Barry

gcc, libkrb4 problem

I'm trying to recompile the source RPM from the FC3 version of cvs (http://ayo.freshrpms.net/fedora/linux/3/i386/SRPMS.updates/cvs-1.11.17-4.sr…) as the version shipped on RHEL/CentOS/etc has a known bug (version 1.11.2-unix "cvs watch on" doesn't work). The initial configure is failing with this obscure error: configure:2257: checking for C compiler default output file name configure:2260: gcc -I/usr/kerberos/include/kerberosIV -I/usr/kerberos/include/kerberosIV conftest.c -lkrb4 -ldes425 -lk5crypto >&5 /usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lkrb4 collect2: ld returned 1 exit status The file(s) do indeed exist in /usr/kerberos/lib, and that path is in my /etc/ld.so.conf (re-ran /sbin/ldconfig just in case). The strange thing here is that it also fails on RHES3 with the same error -- krb4 libs and .so symlinks are all fine, it's in the ld.so.conf. While apparently a RHES3 buglet of some sort, was wondering if anyone could pass on some knowledge or things to try. In debian there is a file /etc/modules in which I can iclude the names of the modules that are to be loaded at boot time As I remember in gentoo there was a similar /etc/modules.auto or something ... is there an appropriate place in a redhat distribution or I should write my own rc script? sasoon

Hi, I have just changed OS'es from ES3 to CentOS. Is this the correct list to find out about updates available for centOS? With ES3 I received an update email with the regular and security updates available and would run up2date. Now, I have yum and am not familiar with how updates are sent about centOS. Thanks! Updates to CentOS-4Beta

1. There are updates to CentOS-4Beta for the i386 and x86_64 arches. The following RPMS have been changed: a. createrepo-0.4.2-1.noarch.rpm - This is an update from the upstream maintainer. b. yum-2.1.13-1.c4.noarch.rpm - This is an update from the upstream maintainer. c. firefox-1.0-6.centos4.3.i386.rpm - The original build did not strip the library files of unnecessary symbols, causing the library files to be up to 3x the normal size. This rebuild properly stripped the library files. The following mozilla based files had the same library files strip issue: mozilla-1.7.5-1.centos4.2.i386.rpm mozilla-chat-1.7.5-1.centos4.2.i386.rpm mozilla-devel-1.7.5-1.centos4.2.i386.rpm mozilla-dom-inspector-1.7.5-1.centos4.2.i386.rpm mozilla-js-debugger-1.7.5-1.centos4.2.i386.rpm mozilla-mail-1.7.5-1.centos4.2.i386.rpm mozilla-nspr-1.7.5-1.centos4.2.i386.rpm mozilla-nspr-devel-1.7.5-1.centos4.2.i386.rpm mozilla-nss-1.7.5-1.centos4.2.i386.rpm mozilla-nss-devel-1.7.5-1.centos4.2.i386.rpm thunderbird-0.8.0-9.centos4.1.i386.rpm d. up2date-4.3.53-1.src.rpm was released on the RHN channel for RHEL4- Beta2 prior to the channel closing. up2date-4.3.53-1.centos4.2.i386.rpm and up2date-gnome-4.3.53-1.centos4.2.i386.rpm were created from that source as upgrades to the original up2date used. e. redhat-artwork-0.120-1.1E.centos4.1.i386.rpm and redhat- logos-1.1.22-1.centos4.1.noarch.rpm were upgraded to include better quality CentOS logos. 2. The yum grouplist, groupinstall, groupupdate features have been added to the CentOS-4Beta repositories. PXE boot Centos 4.0beta problems

Has anyone yet tried PXE booting the vmlinuz/initrd.img set from Centos 4.0beta2? I have a pxelinux setup that is booting 3.4 PXE images fine, but the equivalent setup for 4.0beta loads the kernel and then splashes the monitor full of multicolor random characters. Not a good start to an install... Anyone had luck? Any changes for PXE boots known for 4.0? Thanks in advance. -Alan

modprobe and modules not found

Greetings, test server: 1.8 MHz Intel P4 D865PERL Intel MB w/ built in 10/100 NIC, sound etc. I’ve loaded CentOS 3.3 – yum upgraded to 3.4 I am used to “much older” Linux kernel/distributions i.e. like 1.2.13 and early 2.x stuff. I humbly ask why these modules are not found in the distribution. Please point me to where I get them and associated instructions please. x86_64 timer resolution in ping results

Hi, There seems to be a problem with the timer resolution on x86_64. This is clear in ping results - I don't know if it's just a ping problem or if it manifests elsewhere as well. It does also affect mtr and traceroute times. I guess it's more a kernel issue than a CentOS problem, but is anyone else seeing the same? Whitebox to CentOS upgrade

Hi everyone, I have a home computer that I use to develop on, which it is running Whitebox 3.0. I have copied all the required CentOS 3.4 RPMs to /RPM, created a new yum repository and then updated, but when I try to upgrade, it fails on a "recursive dependency on glibc". Is there any way I can force that dependency? Would it be easier to upgrade to 4.0 using Anaconda?
