Apcupsd UPS monitoring

Having some fun with the APC monitoring daemon (apcupsd) - I've installed the Whitebox rpm and it runs OK but I cannot communicate with the UPS on ttyS0 or ttyS1. I'm using a supported cable (according to the utility's Web site). I've followed the troubleshooting tips on the app's Web site with no luck - the only bit that I can't resolve is it recommends disabling logins on ttySn - how's this done as I can't find any notes on the site or via a google search. Does anyone have any experience of this utility - and any tips? Thanks Nigel Kendrick

OT: Which programming language should I use?

Sorry for the OT post, just looking for a pointer from somebody who's been there and done that. I'm looking to write a program that will allow for managing documents that have been encrypted with AES. I want the program to be as cross-platform as possible, so at the least it needs to run in Win2K/WinXP and in linux X-windows (X.org). Now, I used to write in Java a few years ago, so I guess that's an option. My concerns are that back then Java was slow, and I don't know if there's an easy-to-use cross-platform crypto library for Java. I've seen at least one program that was written in python and Tkinter on the web that offers the source for running in linux, and they offer a .exe download. (http://www.axware.nl) I don't know how they do it, but I saw a claim on the web that python/Tkinter was a great cross-platform combo. The idea is that the user will type in a passphrase and the program will grab the file and either display it (if simple, like text) or launch another program (like pdf). I'll also need to figure out how to tell the program not to swap the memory to disk Any ideas? Thanks! Ben

Secure server install

When I do a minimum install of Centos, which default users should I delete (users that won't be needed on a server) It will be used for webhosting, mail, sql.. And, what partitions would you advice me to create? /root, /tmp, swap, /... should I have more? /Håvard

Can anyone tell me what is causing htis by chance? I know it is the application. What's weird is i "fixed' it last time by reformatting the machine to stabilize this one app. Now after a month it crashes again.... Hello My company is changing server software to CentOS on Dell equipment. At the same time we are expanding our RAID system from standard SCSI to either SATA, or the technology brought forward by Coraid using the AoE protocol. Before we take the final decision I am looking for some real experience with Coraid products on a scale of 30+ disks. We will be using a cluster of four servers with a mix of RAID10 and RAID5. Hey all, After seeing the horrible lack of support for Promise cards in Redhat Enterprise/CentOS, I am looking for a recommendation for a good IDE RAID controller that is supported out of the box (i.e. I would prefer not to have to install via a driver disk). Hi, I installed CentOS 3.3 and kept the machine up2date. I installed poptop and the newest ppp-cvs version ( ppp-2.4.3-0.cvs_20040527.6) We are running a ssh + ppp tunnel for our internet tunnel/tunnel to our NOC. Just another note regarding SMP kernel. I've never had an issue, and am currently running dual XEON 2.4's. Well, I've had issue with kernel upgrades and the megaraid2 driver, but that seems to be a result of Dell's dkms enabled driver setup, rather than the kernel itself. Ben

RHEL question

I work for a small company, and we're running CentOS on our servers. We are looking to possibly move our most critical servers to RHEL. We currently use apt to deploy software upgrades to our servers. I have a question about RHEL subscriptions that they don't seem to be able to answer for me. If you have an RHEL subscription, do you have access to manually download the RPMs? We would prefer to deploy upgrades using apt instead of up2date, for consistency, but we need to know whether we can even do that on RHEL. Thanks! Steve Meyers

The following error appeared and I'm wondering if it's important enough to file a bug report: /var/tmp/rpm-tmp.8817: line 2: gdk-pixbuf-query-loaders: command not found error: %postun(librsvg2-2.2.3-2) scriptlet failed, exit status 127 Also /etc/sysconfig/rhn/rhn-applet.rpmnew got created; the difference is that the uuid has changed from a hex key to "UNSPECIFIED". I don't recall where that hex key came from -- was it in a previous CentOS release, or could it have come from an RHN signup at some other time?

CentOS Release Lifeline

Hi all, The usual apologies if this has been answered; I didn't see the answer anywhere on the site or googleing the archives... Since CentOS is a RHEL rebuild (and this is brilliant!), does that imply that CentOS will continue to provide security patches and bug fixes so long as Red Hat continues to release them for a given version of RHEL? That's to say that Red Hat commits to 5 years of updates for any given version of RHEL. Will CentOS benefit for those same 5 years? I ask because Scientific Linux commits (or, plans) to support 3 years after a release. Thanks in advance! -Fred

Please forgive me if I missed something, but I've searched all over in hopes of finding something documented on a procedure to upgrade a Centos 3.4 system to the beta. I've got the DVD burned and am testing the process on VMWare. All I could figure out how to do was install over the existing partition without formatting, but this was quasi-disastrous so I 'reverted' my VMWare drive to the prior state. Is there some way to reconfigure yum.conf, GPG keys, etc. so that it will pull down the changes? Or, is there a way to 'upgrade' the system using the CD as a source? Any help would be appreciated. I was hoping it was as simple as the upgrade from 3.3 to 3.4, but I couldn't find anything out there. Thanks, Mike

Hey, Lance mentioned yum group install. This yum group capability makes the "server" CD's more versatile than the name implies -- you only need a broadband connection to get any kind of CentOS install you want. Start with a minimal install off the CD, and then use the yum group install to conveniently get the same install you could get off the 3 CD set (only more up to date). The cAos (single) install CD takes full advantage of the yum group install capability. > This single CD iso ... has also been designed for > covermount magazine use. Not the answer your looking for, but I think I remember reading on another list that these cards are not true hardware RAID and they are simple IDE controllers with BIOS and drivers to do software RAID. It might be worth just using the Linux software RAID as this should work with no problems. I'm coming from FC3 and moving to CentOS 3.4. I have been using mod_auth_ldap for some time now with Apache 2.x and authenticating to my Microsoft ADS without problems, here's my article on how that worked: http://www.turnpike420.net/linux/Apache_ADS_AuthLDAP.txt However, I have come to find out that CentOS 3.4 only comes with mod_authz_ldap and when I did some reading on it, doesn't seem like it will work with M ADS at all. Any thoughts on how I can get mod_auth_ldap (not authz) functional with my CentOS 3.4 and where to get it?? thanks, David McD

Does anyone have this card working in hardware RAID mode? I can see the individual ATA drivers when booting. The promise site has drivers for Redhat 7.3,8 and 9, but nothing for higher. I see the source code, and can build the module, but I need it loaded at boot time. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. Sean

For example runnig fetchmail from crontab can cause kernel panic, any user who can use cron is able to initiate system crash. Problem is in auditd which was added in U4 and is turned ON default, turn it OFF after install and you will get runnig systems. I havent try it with new kernel. Good luck. Digital IO card and /proc/devices

Hi all, I am having problems to get the SeaLevel IO card to work with CentOS distro. Basically the card is being recognised and shown by lspci BUT /proc/devices file is not updated with the new devices does anyone know why. ? Could someone tell me what/where infos are needed to get /proc/devices to be updated. The reason I require the /proc/devices infos is because I want to run a mknod command with those infos. I've sent test emails from testvirus.org but they don't appear to be getting flagged. I don't see anything in the logs to indicate they were. Is there a sure-fire way to know? SuperServer 6024H-82R and Centos 3.3

I know this is a long shot, but does anyone have any familiarity with this server? It uses the Super X6DH8-G2 motherboard. Currently, we've added an Adaptec 2120S Ultra320 RAID PCI Controller Card to get RAID 5 capability. The installation bombs and from what I can tell it looks like we're getting SCSI resets or the controller is going offline maybe. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. -- <<JAV>>

Mod_Throttle for Apache 2?

We have some custom software that is put out on our 6 clustered(balanced) webservers. Every 5 minutes that software checks into our server for a new version, if there is a new version it downloads it (20MB file). This happens about 2-3 times per month. Currently there are over 10000 clients that need to download the update. Up until this past week we were able to handle the load and this is putting a serious strain on our webservers. We were hoping to throttle the amount of traffic that each of the webservers would take and the bandwidth that each client consumes. Previously I've used Mod_Throttle for Apache 1.3 on other projects, but on our new servers they are running Apache 2. Hello, I encountered a problem when upgrading from 3.3 to 3.4 on i386. The machine is a production name server running bind. Looks like the new rpm moved my named.conf to .rpmsave and chkconfig'ed bind to off. That's really bad. A more gentle behavior would have been to save the new named.conf to .rpmnew and not mess with initscripts. Anyone else notice that? Francois Caen

Here is a quick guide: During each install, a file called 'ks.cfg' is left by anaconda in /root/ At the end of this post, I include the ks.cfg file which will build a stripped host. Once the install is done, turn off auditting: chkconfig audit off service audit stop and reclaim the LARGE (100M) amout of room these files eat up cd /var/log/audit.d/ rm -f * Unfortunately the package is not deletable as there are dependency issues. As I say. I then end up at: 465M Using a network install from a local mirror and a ks.cf file permits 'gameing' to see what changed in the ks.cfg result in a given size profile. Loosing keyboard

Hello. I am experiencing a problem with CentOS 3, it's that when I start Xwindow, my keyboard is lost and I can't do anything anymore. The Num Lock doesn't react nor the Caps lock. It's like if it would just be disabled. If I quit Xwindow, then my keyboard comes back again, working perfectly. Did anybody also have this problem ? I had a look elsewhere but didn't see anything helpful. My XF86Config file has a normal input section and I tried to change it without success. The current one: Section "InputDevice" Identifier "Keyboard0" Driver "keyboard" EndSection Of course I also changed the physical keyboard. hi all, i tried to install postgrey for postfix and had to update postfix to version 2.1. i added the following to /etc/yum.conf [postfix-2.1-rhel3] name=Postfix Mail Server for RedHat Enterprise Linux 3.0 - $basearch baseurl=http://ftp.WL0.org/yum/postfix/2.1/rhel3/ after the update i have problems because the new version of postfix doesn´t support SASL. is there an postfix-tls rpm for CentOS 3? hi all, i tried to install postgrey for postfix and had to update postfix to version 2.1. i added the following to /etc/yum.conf [postfix-2.1-rhel3] name=Postfix Mail Server for RedHat Enterprise Linux 3.0 - $basearch baseurl=http://ftp.WL0.org/yum/postfix/2.1/rhel3/ after the update i have problems because the new version of postfix doesn´t support SASL. is there an postfix-tls rpm for CentOS 3? If not how can i remove postfix 2.1 and install the old version with TLS support? thank you very much for your help

PHP+Oracle problem

Hi! I have succesfully installed Oracle 9.2.0.4 on Centos. Everything is fine with it. Then I recompiled php-4.3.2-19.ent.src.rpm with rpmbuild --rebuild --define 'oracle 1' php-4.3.2-19.ent.src.rpm The compilation was successful, and I got the php and the php-oci8 rpms. Then I installed them both. After this one running the following PHP script: <?php $c = ocilogon("wonttell", "wonttell", "WONTTELL"); ocilogoff($c); ?> by issuing the command: php < oracle_test.php executed with segfault. The strace output is available at: http://www.telefor1.hu:7000/segfault.txt Strance, but when invoked the script from the web it runs flawlessly. Can anybody point to a solution that solves this problem? -- Zizi

Hi, I do seem to have a slight problem with upgrading two of our machines to CentOS (from SuSE, but that doesn't really matter). Both systems are IBM x-Series 360 with a ServeRaid controller for the "internal" hard disks an a QLogic QLA2200 fibre channel controller for an external stack of disks. On SuSE (kernel 2.4.26) the ServeRaid is controller 0 (resulting in the internal Raid Array being /dev/sda) and the QLogic controller is controller 1 (with the external disks being /dev/sdb). With CentOS (yes, I did an unattended kickstart install) the QLogic is recognized as the first controller, the ServeRaid as the second, so CentOS is installed on the external disks (which kills the database residing there). Is there any possibility (be it software or hardware if anyone knows the x360) to tell CentOS, that the ServeRaid controller has to be recognized as the first controller and the QLogic as the second? This goes for installation *and* operation later on, by way of a kernel command line or whatever. Hello, I try to install Centos 3 U4, to test if the bug is present as under Gralinux AS 3 (an other clone of Redhat AS 3) and yes ... this bug is there. When I try to install the Centos3U4, I choose French keyboard (azerty) , French language: no problem. But after, when want to enter the root passord, or edit the name of a partition with diskdruid the keyboard is still in US qwerty. Problem during install of 3.4

I am having a problem during install of centos 3.4 I am getting an error which says: "The partition table on device /dev/sdb is of unexpected type loop for your architecture. Do you want to reinitialize the drive?" Searching google i found: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=90635 Which was from a while ago and its currently in closed status with no resolution provided?? Does anyone have any more info about this? I currently have FC3 installed on this machine and /dev/sdb is indeed working just fine. sdb is a sata drive connected to a promise controller on my motherboard. sda is also connected to this controller and it gets detected just fine. Any ideas? Thanks. -Jim

Modprobe errors during startup on CentOS 3.4

Hi, I am getting loads of modprobe errors flying past on the screen during startup.. I never got these errors on any of the PC I installed 3.3 onto but now I have tried 3.4 on two seperate PC's and got these errors.. Anyoen else having this? Later..

Removal of CentOS 3.1 from mirrors

With the release of CentOS 3.4 the decision has been taken to remove CentOS 3.1 from the mirrors. This will save approximately 18 GB of space and make room for new architectures and CentOS 4.0 . CentOS 3.1 was superceded by CentOS 3.3 in September, and at that time a new centos-release rpm was pushed into the 3.1 tree to update users to 3.3 . The only people that wont be updated are those that may have hardcoded 3.1 into their yum.conf and for them we have been pushing updates back into the 3.1 tree. Now 3.1 is a symlink to 3.3 so that even if they have hardcoded yum.conf (dont !!) they will now get the 3.3 tree, which will make little difference as the updates were all in the 3.1 tree anyway. 3.1 was only released for i386. ok i checked the spec file and it has the path: Requires: /usr/sbin/groupdel Requires: /usr/sbin/groupmod Requires: /usr/sbin/sendmail <------- SENDMAIL mentioned here On my production server: I have the following: a symbolic link to the sendmail which qmail uses: sendmail -> /var/qmail/bin/sendmail I guess I could edit the SPEC file and remove the sendmail line, correct? or edit it in a way that it checks for either the symlink or the regular link for people who might be using qmail as there prefered mail system.

Ok so your saying to just remove the redhat-lsb rpm. But, am I suppose to have that rpm for some reason...i can eliminate more packages from my system if i do remove the redhat-lsb rpm. I just though it was a required back that shouldnt be removed from the system...

TIA ====my original posting to the list===== Greetings folks, env: 1. servers on OVPN 2.0 rc6 on FC3 and CentOS 3.3(clone of RHES 3.0 with updt3), with all latest updates..Clients are all XP SP2. using TUN on servers/clients.. 2. using in routed config, custom certs all generated on FC3 and copied/replicated on to centos box. 3. use diff ip/netwok for "server" (in server config file) directive for obvious reasons..both OVPN servers are serving the same corp/office network.. 4. using TCP instead of UDP. 5. same setof "iptables" firewall rulesets.. here is the strange thing.. OVPN on FC3 seems to work with out any issues, but the one on CentOS box does not respond, after in production for a while..I have to reboot for it to start responding..my verbose logs don't show anything..it's like, there is not even a connection being established..I have ruled out network issues etc.. external IP's on both hosts are valid and accessable, while OpenVPN on 443 port gets hung or doesn't respond on CentOS host...(i run it on TCP 443)... am getting a little tired of rebooting centos box. i guess I could cron the reboot, but I would like to find the root cause..anyone seen this issue? Heads up if anyone removes the caching-nameserver rpm after they fix their init scripts and replace their named.conf, it also renames your named.ca to named.ca.rpmsave( I believe this happens when you uninstall the caching-nameserver rpm, it also moves named.conf back to named.rpmsave again). So you have to move that back before you can successfully restart named. CentOS-3 i386 errata : caching-nameserver 3.4 update causes problems

I have removed the updated caching-nameserver from the core OS repo of CentOS 3.4 i386 as there have been reports of nameservers losing their configuration and stopping when the update was applied. I have reverted caching-nameserver in the 3.4 core OS back to the CentOS 3.3 version caching-nameserver-7.2-7.noarch.rpm. The new version caching-nameserver-7.3-3_EL3.noarch.rpm is now in the testing repo of 3.4. The new version is still in the .isos but it should be safe for new installs. Lance

Postfix dep for redhat-lsb rpm

Is it possible to eliminate the postfix dep that is required to update to the latest redhat-lsb rpm when upgrading to 3.4 can i just download the source and remove the postfix dep and rebuild, and update the redhat-lsb rpm on my system. i dont think that the post fix dep was there when i updated to 3.3 from 3.1

Im glancing through my email from the mailing list and noticed a lot of talk about centos3.4. When will it be released officially. I have read somewhere that RH is releasing RHEL 4 pretty soon....Im in no need to upgrade because my system is rather stable..just trying to get a idea of what is going on....I know i should be keeping up with the list...but it gets complicated at times. I know j. hughes is building a beta test of 3.4...Im just curious as to if if (cent3.4) is a quarterly update like going from 3.1 to 3.3 or is it a major release as will 3.4 be the same as RHEL4.

Change your default rpm query format on multi-lib archs (like x86_64)

All, I am now building rpms on, and using a multi-lib arch (x86_64) for the first time ... when using the standard command: rpm -qa | grep pkg_name The results might be pkg_name.i386 or pkg_name.x86_64 ... or both. But, the way it is shown by the default query format, looks the same ... like this: pkg_name pkg_name ---------------------------- example: [root@x86-64 ~]# rpm -qa | grep popt popt-1.9.1-21 popt-1.9.1-21 ---------------------------- To fix this problem on multi-lib machines (and change the default query format), you can change your .rpmmacros (or create a .rpmmacros) in your user home directory and add this line: %_query_all_fmt %%{name}-%%{version}-%%{release}.%%{arch} --------------------------- Now the result of the above example is: [root@x86-64 ~]# rpm -qa | grep popt popt-1.9.1-21.x86_64 popt-1.9.1-21.i386 --------------------------- So now you can easily tell which arch of a program is installed on multi-lib machines.
