i810/agpgart problem with X

Hi list, This is my first post to this list so be kind... :) I installed CentOS 3.3 on a Dell Optiplex GX110 over the weekend and found that when I try to start X, I get a problem with loading the agpgart module which causes X to crash out. I did a little poking around Red Hat's bugzilla for RHEL3 and found the following bug: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=132935 You can get the full details by reading the page but essentially the problem exists in the default kernel in RHEL3U3 (and hence CentOS 3.3). Yesterday an errata was issued to release a new kernel which supposedly fixes the problem. Linkage is below: http://rhn.redhat.com/errata/RHBA-2004-550.html As comfortable as I am with the shell, having my desktop able to run CentOS with X Windows would be much nicer. ;) I'd be interested to know if anyone else has had problems with i810 video cards and CentOS 3.3 and any experiences you may have with trying to get them working. httpd trademark issue -- here it is!

Hey, A "powered by RedHat" gif recently appeared on the bottom of the mirror monitor (mirmon) page: http://www.advanced-app.com.hk/caosity/ This appeared in place of the "powered by CentOS" gif that used to be there. The mirmon page is getting it from the icons directory under the default html directory. An Apache update in November put the new gif there in place of the CentOS gif. This was fixed in a httpd update early this month. This server is on a 28 day update lag. Just a few hours ago, yum automatically updated httpd to version httpd-0-2.0.46-44.ent.centos.1.i386.hdr which came into my master repository on November 19th HKT. Actually, a newer httpd version came in on December 3rd, httpd-0-2.0.46-44.ent.centos.2.i386.hdr Theoretically, the appearance of the more recent version should have blocked the installation of the prior version, but the logic in the lag mirror software needs refinement (it is not expecting a newer version to have a non-contiguous number component). I am away from the office. Could someone please let me know where I can grab the correct gif off some web site? Thanks, Rick

Michiel, You don't need snmp built into PHP itself as you can use the net-snmp & net-snmp-utils packages. I must admit prior to my post I had not tried cacti on Centos (only on Slackware & FreeBSD) but since your email I have got in running. Just make sure you have met all the other requirmenets and you should be okay. Getting Spam Assassin and Amavis working

Okay, y'all know that I've been working on a script to auto-setup an email server. (updated script at: http://www.benjamin.weiss.name/mail-server.sh ) I've been trying to get Spam Assassin to work correctly with amavisd and razor. To test, I've taken email from my current email server that has a score of 9 or more and tried emailing it to the new server, but it doesn't get flagged. I've made the configuration files and log files available at: http://www.wacs.us which is the server that I'm testing this whole thing on. Please let me know if you can see what I'm doing wrong. I'm about to give up on amavisd and just use spamc/spamd and clamd via procmail. Thanks! Ben

Issues/thoughts re CentOS-4

This is a list of issues for discussion for CentOS-4. Most of it is based on my experience from building/maintaining CentOS-2 and observing CentOS-3. I have not seen the CentOS-4 beta yet so I don't know if any of this is already done. If these have been discussed on IRC then perhaps someone could produce a shot summary of the outcomes....? * Just call it CentOS-4 not 4.1 etc. Too confusing and serves no real purpose * All modified rpm should use mezzanine or equiv. This makes it easier to track changes, build updates and generate a report on what has changed. * Modified rpm should have .c4.n added to the release - c4 = centos 4. (works well once the 4.1 is dropped) - .n = a number starting at 1. The spec only 0 does not scale if you need to make another spec only change. The changelog will tell you what has changed. * Mission: To stay as close to RedHat as possible Issues: some things need to be modified to support this. For example the cpu/memory restrictions will be removed(like in CentOS-3). Given that we are doing this, should we also lift other artificial constraints like installing on i386? If we start making changes, where do we draw the line? In CentOS-2 I have fixed some small 1 line bugs (mostly packaging issues) but this might be a contentious issue. What about a CentOS+ repo. for enhanced versions? * Issue: should the distro be self hosting? I think as long as the requirements are available from the addon/extras repos. then I don't think this is needed out of the box. Obviously the build environment needs to be well documented and reproducible. * Mission: Remove RedHat trademarks. Issues: should we replace all rh logos/icons or just the ones required by RedHat? I think if the file/words can be replaced then yes, but package names etc. should be left alone. * Issue: yum Don't ever auto-modify yum.conf. Too confusing. Invent a system for selecting/allocating a mirror. Users should always use a 3rd party mirror and not the main caosity mirrors. Issue: every mirror has different paths. We need to clean up all the symlinks and multi versions on the mirrors. (We need someone in change of the mirrors) * Issue: gpg key. This should be installed by default so the user does not have to find & import it. At a minimum it should be in /usr/share/doc/centos-release and work like a RedHat box. * Issue: release QA Before public release, a QA procedure should make sure that there are no obvious problems (like the comps issue of 3.3). * Idea: automatic patch building. It should be possible to build most patches without intervention. I don't know what the current systems in place are but if there were autobuilt unsigned patches available it would allow - testing of patches before they are 'officially' released - checking the progress if a patch Using an automatic system to apply CentOS specific modifications means that in some cases, the CentOS specific changes can also be autoapplied and the package build. 3ware 9000 install

I'm trying to do a fresh install on a new server that has a 3ware 9000 controller. I followed the instructions on the 3ware manual and used a floppy with the drivers for RH WS3 (Update 2) but it doesn't work. After it asks me to load the disk it reads for a while and then it says it did not find any drivers that pertain to this system. I tried loading the 3w9xxx driver unsuccesfully, it does no recognize the drives. Has anybody succesfully installed Centos-3 on a server with a 3ware 9000 controller? How? I have another machine that does not have a raid controller (and I'm installing Centos right now) that I can use to ciompile the drivers or whatever is needed. Hello all, Ive just installed CentOS using the default desktop configuration. It promised to install openoffice.org but it didnt. After a manual install (via yum install openoffice.org) the package plus dependencies install but wont start even though gnome shows all the right links Am I missing something? :-( best wishes, J.

Now, *I* build and run Garnome on my workstation, but most users are reasonably happy with the standard interface. I do also give them XMMS, but only faculty have disk space available for music files (and there aren't any encoders). And we have a newer Mozilla, Firefox, Acrobat Reader, and so forth, as well as MATLAB, Maple, and other math software. It definitely works for us. Announcement: 3ware 9500S Driver disk for ISO Installs now available for 32 bit CentOS

We have built and packaged a driver install disk for CentOS 3.3 for the 3ware 9500S series of SATA Raid controllers to allow iso installation and booting from a 3ware 9500S based RAID array. Its available at: http://www.integratedsolutions.org/drivers.html We only ask that you log in so we can send you update notices as new drivers become available. We will not use the information for any other purposes and will purge the database after 6 months. These drivers are based on the 3ware 9.0.2 sources and have been built for 32 bit CentOS 3.3 for the up, smp and hugemem kernel versions of 2.4.21-20.c0.EL to run on athlon and opteron based systems. A newer version is in the works based on the 3ware 9.1.5.2 version of the sources and should be available within a few weeks. This version should increase RAID 5 performance by 30% (per the 3ware people). These driver disks are free but have no waranty. They have been tested on a dual opteron based system running the 32 bit version of CentOS 3.3. (We needed this version for application compatability). The system boots with a warning about a tainted driver but functions fine (we compiled the drivers on a whitebox linux system). This will be fixed in the next release. We hope to make available the 32 bit CentOS 3.3 driver disk, 64 bit CentOS 3.3 driver disk and a CentOS 3.3 modified install script for 3dm2 within the next few weeks. Any suggestions on making these offerings better will be appreciated. More to follow. Postfix on Centos3.3

Hi, as far as security advisories from Redhat I only see the last update to Postfix being 9/2/04 2.0.16-14.RHEL3. Centos3.3 however added a newer version that I am currently using which matches the last 2.0 version official release at postfix.org. /pub/cAos/centos-3/3.3/contrib/i386/RPMS/ postfix-2.0.20-1.centos3.1 Since I am running this as my public smtp server it makes me wonder why Redhat has not moved to Postfix 2.1 which is the latest official release. Remote Installation

I "upgraded" a server from RH9 to CentOS remotely, as from WBEL 3.0 to CentOS 3.0, and a RH8 to CentOS 3.0.. Used YUM to do it.. HOWEVER, it was (basically) Redhat - > Redhat (based) upgrade. I have no idea how well it would work to do a Deb box that way. Maybe build a local box (or VMWare image, that way you can use the Snapshot to recover screwups), with Deb on it and try the "upgrade" .. See if it bombs out.

I have the great pleasure to announce that the cAos Foundation has been given the right to an exhibitor booth at the upcoming LinuxWorld Expo in Boston, Massachusetts from February 15th - 17th. Does anyone have concern about this? What if Redhat stops giving SRPMS for new releases and updates in public? If you buy a subscription to RHEL AS and they have to give you the SRPMS because of GPL agreement can that person provide those SRPMS to public again because of GPL? They claim they are premium OpenSource company but they are still a company and for them money is bottom line. Someone does need to volunteer to write the script to 'auto-modify yum.conf' to use a local mirror (ok not 'auto' maybe) - it would be done on install and manually thereafter - I am guessing a yum-config-centos rpm or some such containing a bash script that actually produces the first yum.conf on install (using the geolocate stuff) and thereafter would only write a .rpmnew unless run manually. How about the yum.conf in the actual yum rpm ?? what will happen to that ?? Hi folks, Just a quick hello having installed CentOS on my first box - an Acer Altos G310 (P4 2.8GHz, 768MB RAM with 70GB + 300GB storage. The 300GB unit is a SATA disk which I hope to software (hardware!?) mirror - if I'm in for any major fun mirroring a SATA drive do let me know now - I think hardware mirroring is not an option (yet!?) but I haven't checked this out completely. This isn't my first *nix/linux install - I go all the way back to Daisy Dnix, Xenix, SC..er..you know who..unix, via VAX VMS and CP/M on various systems. I have a couple of RH9 boxes that will need updating soon and I'm also running one other Acer G310 server on..er..White Box..(sorry!) so this is kind of a 'keeping my options open' thing! This new G310 will be running Bacula to provide remote backup services for 25 regional sites, and the other G310 is being used as a mail/Web/Intranet (eGroupWare) server for our 250 staff. U4 beta rpms for CentOS

kernel update with yum - no grub entry

Hi people I am new to this list - actually I am one of (probably) a few who are jumping ship from WBEL. I feel like a bit of a scab jumping over at this time - but we all make mistakes eh? I have installed CentOS and ran 'yum update' and installed everything it prompted me for. After a reboot, I realised I had booted into the same original kernel-2.4.21-20.EL.c0smp and not the updated one - kernel-2.4.21-20.0.1.ELsmp. Upon further inspection I found that there was no entry made in grub.conf for the new kernel, and there is no initrd in /boot for this new kernel. Could someone please explain what has happened and whether it is normal behaviour or not? I am used to updating a kernel with yum and having all of the grub stuff done automatically for me :/ Now that I might have to do it manually myself I am getting all sooky and so came to this list to cry for help (and coz I'm a lazy bastard!). Hello list. I am assigned the task to select a RHEL3 clone operating system for a couple of servers. So far I have found Whitehat Linux, Tao, Scientific Linux and Centos. I like the community developed aspect advantage of Centos compared to the other distros where one or couple people maintain the operating system. - Is this a long term goal project? How does it sustain itself? How much extra money is usually required on a monthly basis for operations? I noticed that developers had to pay for hosting costs when new iso images were released. Wouldn't using bittorrent cut down on downloading costs? - How does Centos compare to other RHEL clones? Are there enough developers to quickly update packages when Redhat makes security announcements? - Do Centos developers have access to RHEL3 machines or is everything done on Centos computers? For that matter do developers compile the Redhat released SRPMS + updates on RHEL computers or are binary RPM packages built on Centos operating system itself? I am asking because it would seem to me that using a full Redhat provided distro to build packages might introduce less erorrs? - What is changed from official RHEL releases besides the copyrighted logos for each Centos release? I am not talking about packages in the addons directories. Just the base os release packages. I ran into this same problem with x86-64 and VMWare GSX server, VMWare does not officially support x86-64 yet. The VMWare binaries are 32bit... VMWare problems on CentOS 3.3 x86-64

Hi folks, I'm hoping someone can help with a problem I'm having getting VMWare to work on CentOS 3.3 (x86-64). I recently downloaded VMWare workstation 4.5 (not sure of exact version number but its the latest version as of yesterday). I was hoping to run CentOS as my main OS and then use VMWare to still support Windows XP machines and run the couple of applications which refuse to work properly under Wine. I installed the RPM okay, ran the configuration script fro VMWare, however when it comes to running VMware I get a message about a missing libaray - "ld- linux.so.2". I did a search on the hard disk and couldn't find it. I also couldn't find an RPM package (either source or binary) to install. Everything else on CentOS seems to be going okay, its really fast compared to Suse 9.1 which I was running previously (not sure if thats because I'm running a 64-bit OS or that CentOS doesn't have as much running at once?). Could anyone suggest how I can get this library? Regards, Rob

Kernel Panic on New Kernel Package

Hey all, I have a P4 2.4 GHz CPU (hyper threading) and have been using the 2.4.21-20.EL.c0smp kernel and it works perfectly. I installed the new kernel-smp (2.4.21-20.0.1.EL) kernel and it installed flawlessly. However, every time I boot I get a kernel panic and I must reboot to the older kernel. The error I am getting is: (it seems to be failing on jbd.o and ext3.o) Kernel requires old insmod, but couldn't run /bin/insmod.old No such file or directory Then it can't find the initrd and Panics. I am running a single partition on my software RAID1, the file system is ext3. [root@admin /]# df Filesystem 1K-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on /dev/md0 115377576 2014940 107501728 2% / none 512700 0 512700 0% /dev/shm [root@admin /]# I just can't seem to figure it out. Firewire drive support in CentOS 3.3?

I just recently downloaded and installed the CentOS 3.3 release, and I'm having a bit of a problem... It appears that no support for firewire drives has been included. I am unable to find the ohci1394 or sbp2 modules anywhere. Are there other packages which must be installed from the distribution to get firewire devices to be recognized? Thanks. --Steve

*very* raw script for a new email server

All, I'm putting up a new email server, but I can't afford downtime when I switch servers. So, I've been writing a script that will take a CentOS install and turn it into a secure email server with Spam Assassin, Amavis-new, ClamAV and external relay using SASL authentication. The script is still *very* raw, and I'm relatively new to bash script writing. I still have some areas of work to do: - I need to incorporate the "alternatives" command to switch from sendmail to postfix, instead of using the redhat-switch-mail and changing it via gui. - I need to figure out how to automate the certificate generation. Right now I still have to type in a password at the prompt, as well as hit <enter> to accept the defaults - Some of my sed commands are kludgy. I'm still learning the ins and outs of sed - I have *no* idea whether or not Vipul's Razor is working or not. - I need to fix the yum "extras" section. - I need to improve the iptables handling. Beau, Most everything you could need to know is in the man pages for yum. If you have specific questions not answered by the man pages, please feel free to ask me for my experiences, Seth (who wrote the thing so should be able to answer *anything* about it), or the list. I'm actually a Debian developer myself, but we're using CentOS at work, and I find yum quite comfortable (and a good deal less complex than apt for setting up and maintaining local repositories). I've recently implemented the use of the yumgroups.xml file to define groups of packages for installation on different classes of machines. It works very well (provided you make sure that all the important files are actually readable!). Okay, I'm curious. I just installed CentOS 3.3 and did an update with YUM. I want to run Apache so I first checked to see if it's installed with rpm -q apache. Nada. Yet, in /etc/rc.d/rc3.d I see K15httpd. So I moved that to S15httpd and started it up. It's up. Goto the default page and it's running. So....if it's not showing up in rpm queries, how is/was it installed? -- <<JAV>>

The spec file is still changed to remove reference to Red Hat but the release level is left unchanged. This is just one more little step towards our aim of full compatibility ... To update to this new kernel version run yum update (assuming you havent modified the yum configuration to not update kernels) Then you will need to reboot the machine to use the new kernel. Lance

Hello, Does any have Apache 2.0.49 with tomcat 5.5.4 and jakarta-tomcat-connectors-jk2-2.0.4 working??? Hey all, Just wanted to say good job the the CentOS team and community! I am very impressed with the open communication, fast updates (errata, etc), and the supportive nature of the CentOS community. Local mirrors and ISP transfer bills

As a matter of policy and because I'm at the end of a DS/1 that needs to feed my customers needs, I've set up a local subset mirror of Centos 3.3. It's a subset because I don't copy any of the x86_64 directories ( no machines that use them ) but it's also a superset because I've added an additional "local" directory structure that contains things that I need - amavis, clamav etc. I can do "yum install amavisd-new" from any of my servers and have yum install or update the packages that are needed. The advantage for everyone in doing this is that I don't have to use up my DS/1 bandwidth for installs or updates of multiple machines and the mirrors don't get hit with a dozen requests for the same file from one location. (I was quite annoyed when the updated yum package wanked up my custom yum.conf) An additional benefit to me is that updates to my real customer servers go at a hundred megabit rate rather than the time it'd take to suck down a new kernel or openoffice through a DS/1. I'd like to recommend that everyone with some kind of server farm do this. The local mirror doesn't have to be wonderful - mine is a 200mhz PPro machine built out of junked parts - all it has to do is serve FTP. You'll save money in the long run and reduce the cost to the donated mirrors. Someone pays for the bandwidth, one way or the other.

Is anyone using Webmin with CentOS? I've always found it works very well with RHat Linux. I've not used RHEL so I'm not sure. I know on my SuSE server it doesn't seem to work well and suspect there are some location problems. -- <<JAV>>

Frenando, I had no problems with the vsftp instructions on the RedHat site, starting here: http://www.redhat.com/docs/manuals/enterprise/RHEL-3-Manual/ref-guide/s1-ft… The section on ftp starts here: http://www.redhat.com/docs/manuals/enterprise/RHEL-3-Manual/ref-guide/ch-ft… There was one essential point that I did not get from the manual (I had to find it the hard way): any directory in your ftp server that you want to be publicly accessible needs to be "executable" by everyone ("o" for "others") -- one enters a directory by "executing" it. I recommend vsftp because 1) I assume RedHat had good reasons for choosing it, and 2) you have RedHat supporting it. Low end systems

Hi All I been using whitebox 3 for a bit and am take a look at cent 3.3 and 3.1 so far like it, but i seeing with older system 200 to 800 not Intel system (amd k6/2) ( not all of them ) cent comes back in install and till me that its not made for system like this ... whitebox 3 works OK so I'm not sure why and if a can get around this ....
