File permission

Hello all, I think my file permission are completely screwed up? I created a file called text file called test as root user and have done chgrp on that file to a group called admin. I have added the users ozzie and root to that group. I then did a chmod g+wr on the test file and ozzie can still not write to the file. If I take away read access from the group, ozzie can still read the file. The group permissions have no effect what so ever. If you add or take away permissions from the other permissions, that will effect the test file. What did I do wrong? Could someone please point me in the right direction? Thanks all. Dominic

Michael, CentOS works fine on Pentium 2's. Many in the world are junking Pentium 2's nowadays, so you can upgrade for very little. Also, in my experience, they tend to be reliable. Rick

I can see it being a web commerce site in a box, but other that that the thing is a boat anchor. Their Dlink switches are absolute garbage, after 9 upgrades I only have to reboot them once a month now. We tried the OEM Cisco switch, they gave me bad hardware, since their support people didn't know a frame from a packet they were unable to resolve it. Finally we sent the Cisco's back. Our rep finally tells us they are coming out with ethernet pass through, which we purchased. I pray that these work. The management station hangs about once every 2 months as well. Then only thing I have ever come across that compares to this POS is Sun's E10k, the memory latency rendered it useless as well. I am also perplexed how many people got sucked in on these, they where ripped to shreds on slash dot, the over subscription with 4 ports is more than 3 to 1, and qos is only of any use up to 4 queues with the Notrel hardware. Also their ROI numbers are a joke, ( I am not even considering the 150 or so man hours to get it to work at all, at 125$ a pop that pays for 4 loaded 345's) once you add the whole enchillada up, it is much cheaper to use 345's even with 14 blades in a chassis. I also have a hard time putting anything critical on a box that uses Toshiba laptop hard drives and doesn't have serial console. I guess if one doesn't need serial consoles, and real local disk IO and network IO is may be a good solution, but to me its a boat anchor. Sorry for ranting, but I needed this, just got off a bloody battle with a moron vendor who had no clue what a don't fragment flag is. They rolled out a whole bunch of Solaris patches that appear to hard code the DF flag to set. IDLE still broken

Hey, Sure enough, IDLE 1.0.3 came with Python 2.3, but the update did not fix my problem. I found a entry in RedHat's bugzilla, "Inconsistent input from numeric pad when numlock off", bug 136600. Hey, It seems to be OK just to install python 2.3 via rpm. (So my idea was not so "off the wall" after all.) Since Seth's reply here indicated that my idea was an option, I decided to try it first on a test system. When I got to the rpm download page at www.python.org, I found an FAQ exactly on point: begin quote Q) Is it safe to install these RPMs on a Red Hat system? Will they over-write the system python and cause problems with other Red Hat applications that expect a different version of Python? A) The RPMs that start with "python2.3" are built to not interfere with the system Python. They install as "/usr/bin/python2.3" and will not conflict with the system Python unless you are running on a system that ships the a version of Python which has the same major/minor number. To invoke the interpreter with these packages, you will explicitly have to run "python2.3". Note that all Python RPMs provided by Python.org and Red Hat provide a "/usr/bin/python2.3" (or similar, with major/minor number), even if they also provide "/usr/bin/python". package dependency problem

Post Turkey Day (#1 Shopping Day) Greetings! I am running CentOS-3 as a desktop distribution. Everything is fine except for Idle, the integrated development environment that comes with Python. Python is version 2.2, but Idle is version 0.8. The Idle 0.8 keyboard is driving me nuts. On my Windows box, I downloaded from www.python.org and installed Python, and got Python 2.3 and Idle 1.0.8, which is MUCH BETTER -- so much better, even for code intended to be run only in Linux, I would much rather code Python in Windows! Fedora comes with Python 2.3. I have my own CentOS mirror, so I added a fedora mirror on the side, and I used rsync to grab only the python files from fedora mirrors. I ran yum check-update. As a result, yum downloaded all the headers and reported no problems. But when I ran yum update, yum balked, giving a list of packages that are dependent on python2.2, "that is not available". The packages listed are: authconfig-gtk comps-extras firstboot redhat-config-date redhat-config-keyboard redhat-config-kickstartrhpl redhat-config-language redhat-config-mouse redhat-config-nfs redhat-config-rootpassword redhat-config-samba redhat-config-securitylevel redhat-config-soundcardredhat-config-users redhat-config-xfree86 When I wrote to the yum mailing list, I put in: "Unless Python 2.3 breaks those packages (which I think is unlikely), I thought I should be able to upgrade Python to a newer version without this kind of objection." Seth wrote back that python 2.3 would break some of the packages, aparently because the packages have hardcoded paths, and the change of location from /usr/lib/python2.2 to /usr/lib/python2.3 would break some. One possible work around would be to grab the packages on the above list from fedora in addition to just the python packages, but I would consider that a last resort. One off the wall idea is to install python 2.3, but leave python 2.2 there for the packages with hardcoded paths. (I am not sure whether yum would cooperate on this plan.) I have selected 4 software packages for us to evaluate in order to decide on the best possible engine for the much-requested cAos Community Wiki. All 4 samples are now up and running for you to try out, play around with, and evalute. Graphics, color schemes, etc. will be finalized after we choose a Wiki. Updating on CentOS-3.3

Sorry to be beating a dead horse to death here... but... in the archives, mostly the FAQ is mentioned, but the FAQ seems to be 'coming soon'. :) I just did a clean install of 3.3. I am operating from the command line. I first mistakenly ran.. been there done that on WhiteBox as well. :( rpm --import /usr/share/rhn/RPM-GPG-KEY Got what I understand now is the expected errors. I then ran rpm --import /usr/share/doc/centos-release-3.3/RPM-GPG-KEY I looked and the file is in fact there. And I'm still getting the errors in both up2date -u and yum update. warning: rpmts_HdrFromFdno: V3 DSA signature: NOKEY, key ID 025e513b Error: Could not find the GPG Key necessary to validate pkg /var/cache/yum/update/packages/cups-1.1.17-13.3.16.i386.rpm Thanks for any help. Perhaps one good email clearly explaining the whole deal on this would prevent more of these snippets spread across the archives, until the FAQ is back up? Maybe? ;) Thanks for a great release! At least we can solve the oo problem, the disks contain the rpms for it and it did work when I installed it, but whats really scary is the font's in Mozilla. I don't what happed there. ftp ftom outside the local network

Having little problems with 3.3

Hello all, I just installed 3.3. All three disk download ok and when I ran the test on them, all three passed so I thought that the install would go fine and it did. However after using it for about 5 min I have noticed two things. OO does not install by default. When I did a reinstall I noticed that there is not option to even select it. Maybe there is something wrong with my disks, I don't know I just what to see if anyone else is having this problem. The rpms for OO are one the disks they just don't install even with the office packages selected during the install. The other thing I noticed is the fonts in Mozilla. Now CentOS 3.1 and Whitebox 3rc2 fonts in mozilla are great. But CentOS 3.3 I don't know what happen. Like I said may its the disks I downloaded. Has anyone else had or heard of these aliments? yum.conf issue

i just did a fresh install of centos-3.1 i ran yum -y update to get all the latest updates.. when it finished the update... of course the yum.conf symlink was broken... and now i how a /etc/centos-yum.conf /etc/yum.conf.rpmsave /etc/yum.conf-SAVE /etc/yum.conf <---broken symlink which of these files to i create a symlink to for /etc/yum.conf so i can continue to get my updates.

no qmake on CentOS-3

Hey, I need, but do not find anywhere, qmake, a program that comes with qt and is normally found in the bin directory under qt. In addition to using CentOS-3 on text-only servers, I am using CentOS-3 as an X desktop distribution (it lookes exactly like RedHat 9 to me). On one of my desktop systems, I want to try eric3, an IDE (integrated development environment) for python. During the CentOS install originally, I chose both the Gnome and KDE options. The installation instructions for eric3 say install qt first, then QScintilla. qt is already installed. QScintilla needs qmake to install, but qmake is not there or anywhere. Is there a way to put qmake under qt where it belongs? Thanks, Rick

Why is RH using such an outdated version of OpenSSL ? I understand that they may have back-ported the fix but I just tried installing Net::SSLeay on a Centos 3.3 box and it wouldn't install, saying that the openssl version was old and suggested I get 9.7b or later? How are you handling this problem? I am resorting to recompiling OpenSSL 9.7d . Thanks, Dave

Hi Everyone, I'm new here. I just caught this thread and checked my yum.conf. It does indeed point to the main mirror. May I suggest that the default yum.conf file contain a links to some of the public mirrors, or none at all instead of the main mirror. That way, it doesn't point to the main mirror, which would be reserved for public mirrors. Then in the Docs show an example yum.conf that shows what is acceptable. Another suggestion would be to put a few public mirrors in the yum.conf file and comment them out. It seems to run fine under CentOS, but I'm not booting from it (I have a separate SCSI drive that has the OS installed on it; the array is used for backups). I have lost the contents of the array once when one of the drives failed (that was under Red Hat Linux 9, with the Adaptec driver package). I haven't been able to get the current Adaptec driver package to install under CentOS, but as the card seems to work fine without it, I haven't tried very hard. I had some issues with the SATA cables included with the Adaptec card and ended up replacing them with cables that seems to seat better and wobble less. One card I would definitely *not* recommend is Adaptec's AAR-1210SA card, a two-port SATA card with a Silicon Image chipset. After having lots of problems under RHL 9, I managed to get it working with a Debian system with a custom 2.6 kernel. Definitely not worth the money. Both of these arrays were meant as quickie solutions to relatively unimportant problems. If I were to do them again, or do a more serious project, I would definitely go with the 3Ware cards over the Adaptec cards. I also had a very bad experience with a Promise external RAID enclosure that has put me off Promise for life. (Actually, I would seriously consider adding disk space via one or more of Apple's Xserve RAID subsystems, as well.) YMMV. SNMP problems

Dear All, I don't know if this is the right list for this type of question and I am sure I will be told if its not.... I am using Centos 3.3, with a 2.4.20-30.9 kernel on an Amd Opteron box. I am using this kernel because it has matching freeswan modules. I am also using the following net-snmp packages: net-snmp-5.0.9-2.30E.6 net-snmp-devel-5.0.9-2.30E.6 net-snmp-utils-5.0.9-2.30E.6 I find that the values returned for the ethernet traffic (this machine has six ethernet ports) via snmp are bogus and the same for in and out octets, bearing no resembence to the actually network traffic. I have Yummed to the latest of everything, but still no joy, its still wrong, If anyone knows of this problem please could you put me out of my misery.... :-) In the mean time I have written a perl script to grep the rx/tx bytes printed by ifconfig and sent these to mrtg for now, but this is not ideal..... kernel swapping bug

I have been fighting with a kernel swapping bug for some time that was present in RH9 and carried over to RHEL 3 and hence CentOS. There is a beta U$ kernel and i was wondering would i break my system installing this beta U$ kernel? Also how would i go about installing this kernel? Is it a simple RPM command argument? Thanks again for those answers which I'm sure will also interest other people. If I understand correctly, I can use software RAID with no disadvantages over hardware RAID as for reliability in cases of power failures (as long as we use journalised filesystem), is that correct ? I'm not in fear about he CPU increase for software RAID, that isn't a problem to me. What else do you think I would loose by using software RAID instead of hardware raid ? Also, sorry to insist about power failures, but here is the reason: my provider allows me to have remote reboot on my server, which is very helpful when the system hangs suddenly as I have no physical access. Curently I must do a hardware reboot 1-2 times per year and the system starts and runs again correctly. These remote reboots are power failure types and are more and more frenquently offered to customers. It avoids us to ask the technician to reboot the machine. Your professionnal experience is very instructive. All you said about the flush problem is thrilling. Do you mean then that having battery bakup RAID will not help much regarding reliability in cases of power failures ? Then many people have been tricked ? Last: is there a mean of knowing what datas have been lost when a power failure happened ? Can we see that in terms of sectors, clusters or in terms of files which are corrupted ? You can have loss of data without the file system having any problems. That is data is missing, perfectly working file system. In fact journaled file systems pick preserving the file system over missing data every time. Eg. You have a database and are writing a query to the database that inerts 1000 records. If you do not insert all 1000 records then you cannot use any of them. That is record 1000 depends on all the previous 999. On record 678 the power fails. When the system comes back what happened to the first 678 inserts? You assume they complete but since you need all 1000 for the data to be valid you basically have to delete the ones you did insert and start again, if you can. Deleting means that you first have to know what records to delete. Depending on the complexity of the inserts (they could touch dozens of tables and interrelationships) you could have a lot of work ahead of you to manually find what is a record that is part of that incomplete set and what records are not. This is where a journal comes in. A journal records when data is written. Basically you record what you write after you finish writing a record so that worst case you can replay that journal of changes to back out of what happened. This is what a journaled file system does. It allows you to more easily back out of the incomplete data problem quickly. This is opposed to the old method of file system consistency checking which was like a manual search of the entire database. If you only have to go over the changes, rather than searching the whole database it is faster. Also the long manual check is complicated and prone to error. For speed and accuracy a journal is better. However journaled file systems do not save the data. In fact journaled file systems will throw away data if it is incomplete. Say in the above example for some reason that you could use the first 678 records, or that there was no other way to recover the 1000 records again so 678 was better than nothing. Well a journal does not care. It simply looks to see if the whole transactions completed of 1000 records. If it didn't it deletes everything up to the failure. Even if 999 of the 1000 records was written it will still delete the 999. The assumption being that it is better to have a consistent file system and protect the good data than have partially written data, that while valuable is inconsistent. If you want to ensure that even partial data is preserved you have to do other things to protect it. A battery protect RAID card is one very very narrow approach that solves one specific type of failure state. Where data is written to the RAID card but not to disk yet. Lets go back to our above example You have a power failure on record 678. The raid card has memory to store 5 records. At the time of the power failure it has only sent the first 673 records to the disks for writting. The other 5 are in the controller cache. If you have a battery on that memory you will save those 5 records. However does it matter? Afterall 678 or 673 they are still not 1000. Also the disks themselves may store in their cache 2 records. So the disk has only written records up to 670 with records 671 and 672 still waiting in volatile RAM with no battery backup attached directly to the disk (write back cache on all PATA drives). The power fails and the system comes back online. The RAID card writes records 673-678 to the disks and they write them. Unfortunately records 671 and 672 are lost because they were in volatile disk cache on the disk itself. So you have records 0-670,637-678. You in fact have a hole in what you have on disk, and who cares anyway because the journaled file system is going to delete all those records when it goes to work to ensure integrity over data preservation. The flush problem as I hope I have demonstrated is not at all addressed by battery backups on RAID card ram. Battery based backup of RAID memory is a good gimmick, but in practice is useless. It covers such a narrow part of the problem space as to be irrelevant. If you are concerned that power failure will loose data get a UPS for the entire system. It is the only thing that will help you because it is the only thing that will allow your entire system, from software to hardware to achieve a consistent state before shutting down. Otherwise you may save a few bytes of data that was in cache on the RAID card but that does not matter since you will still end up with an incomplete file system transaction that the journaled file system is going to delete anyway. The linux journaled file systems are very good at preserving integrity, even in the face of underlying hardware failure in some cases. Choosing a good file system is all you need to do there to ensure that aspect. As far as data loss, aside from backups after the fact the only solution that will work in practice is Uninteruptible Power Supplies that will give you enough time to shutdown the entire system in a consistent way. I edited the .discinfo file but still the installer does not recognize the dvd as an instllation medium. I have attached the .discinfo file. Promise raid cards

Hello. I would like to know if promise RAID cards are compatible with CentOS / RHEL ? I have seen that only SATA is supported on the RHEL hardware compatibility list. The other ATA raid cards seems not to be compatible. They give source code and promise grants compatibility with RedHat 8 and 9 but not RHEL. I would like to know if somebody tried a ATA raid card like Fasttrack TX2000, SX4000, Fasttrack 100 TX2, etc.. If you could share me your experience it would be great. My provider says that he had some bad experiences about that cards and he doesn't allow me to use CentOS on his promise cards he provides (only), so I cannot have RAID on my server... it's a shame.. Hi, I installed CentOS on a 1U server with a SI SATA Controller According to lspci a CMD Technology Inc Silicon Image SiI 3112 SATARaid Controller (#2) (rev 2) The problem is for some reason the system came up without DMA. Of course this means terrible IO performance. Aside from setting it with hdparm is there a way to have it do this on boot? Is this a known issue? Terrence

Well that didn't work. I got a bootable dvd out of it but the centos installed did not detect the media as having the installation files. It asked for a cd instead of recognizing the dvd. Hi, Has anyone newer GnuPG (S)RPMs than the one coming with CentOS (gnupg-1.2.1-10). That one obviously has problems (for example: it doesn't recognize new signatures on keys when doing 'gpg --import keysfile'). I tried to build new packages from various SRPMs from the Fedora distros. I realize that up2date and yum are two different methods of updating with CentOS. My question is this? I updated my yum signature key. Downloaded all required updates and now up2date still complains of 500 more updates after the initial count was 514. Should I worry about this or what hack is known to fix this? I looked around the web and only found people talking about "Yum" and only one site making referenecs of fixing up2date with no follow ups. I'm just concerned about this? Other than that, I'm very happy with CentOS. Thank You, JD. Brown

I am getting a GPG error whenever i try to install samba. I have just reinstalled 3.1..yum updated to 3.3 and now m getting gpg errors. Any ideas? Hey, Greg suggested that I take a straw poll. Should cAos take steps to prevent getting stuck with a big ISP bill in the future? For example, should cAos: a) for new installs, have the yum.conf point to public mirrors, rather than to mirror.caosity.org? b) make sure that "yum update" does not substitute a new yum.conf file that points only to mirror.caosity.org? c) allow public mirrors to access mirror.caosity.org directly, but block direct access by everyone else? On the other hand, do the benefits of allowing direct access to mirror.caosity.org by everyone outweigh the costs of occasionally big ISP bills? Feel free to express your views, Greg is listening. I've been happily doing updates all along (last time was Oct. 12) with no trouble. The key ID used to sign the x86_64 packages is 219180cddb42a60e and the key ID used to sign the i386 packages is 7049e44d025e513b. Release of centos-3.3 ISP bill

It turns out that the release of Centos-3.3 was so popular, that it threw us way over the threshold of our ISP's, and now we are stuck with a _very_ large bill (as in an estimated 6TB of transfers). While in one hand I am ecstatic that we are so successful, but on the other hand, that is coming out of the developers pockets. The developers should be the last ones footing these bills (and this one was very large). You can help. Please consider a donation for each of the systems that you are using. Greg, Maybe a glitch in CentOS or YUM made the bill higher than it needed to be. I recently moved two systems from CentOS 3.1 to 3.3. On both machines, I started with yum.conf files pointed at my own mirror. On both machines, all I did was "yum update", but my yum.conf was renamed, and I got new yum.conf files pointed at mirror.centos.org. I was watching this carefully only because I migrating these two systems in part to test my own mirrors. If not for that, I might not have noticed the switch. (And because I am testing my own mirrors, I got rid of the new yum.conf files and put my own back immediately.) Maybe lots of other sites got switched to mirror.centos.org and they have not even noticed. Or they assumed the upgrade switched them because cAos wants them to update off mirror.centos.org, so they left the new yum.conf as is. This could be the main cause of the big bill. Rick

I get the thing burnt, looks good, I can browse all the files, but when I actually boot from it I can't get it to admit the ks.cfg exists. adduser ?

I installed CentOS 3.3 some time ago and the first thing I did after the install was to run a little script that adds my user plus a few other things. The script adds my user like this USER="ulrik" PASSWD="<mypasswd>" /usr/sbin/adduser $USER -p $PASSWD It seemed to work fine except I couldn't login? I searched Google for reasons why I could only login via ssh as root and was about to send a long mail to this list, when I decided to change the password and try to login again, and this time it worked? Doesn't the -p option work on adduser anymore? It did on my redhat9 where I used the same script and the -p option is still on the man page for adduser. I noticed that the same option for smbpasswd had been removed but adduser didn't complain. Hey, LagMirror is a little different. The objective of LagMirror is to run YUM as a daily cron job and minimize the risk that a show-stopping glitch could get onto and bring down a mission-critical server. Packages that are quickly superseded are not put into the Lag mirror directories at all. The system takes advantage of the fact that show-stopping glitches are typically discovered and fixed quickly. Although LagMirror is not for everyone, it could work well for systems running on common hardware without any customized packages. This is work in progress, but it seems to be working. Beth, I can get to http://66.196.225.55/, but if I try going to the mail subdirectory I get: Forbidden You don't have permission to access /mail/ on this server. This seems to be a web server, but your question says vsftpd. I recently set up an ftp server using vsftpd. I found that for a directory to be accessible to anyone, permissions must be set so that the directory is executable by anyone -- you get into a directory by "executing" it. So to make a sub directory accessible, permissions must be set in the parent directory for the sub directory is executable. Go to /var/www/html and check the permissions on the mail sub directory. The command chmod +x mail might do it (or you may have to do chmod o+x mail, and chmod u+x mail plus chmod g+x mail, while chmod ugo+x mail might also work). This might help. VSFTPD / Apache

I have my web files in /var/www/html uploaded using vsftpd, everything is ok there all files in the directory /html appear fine, but when i try to access my folder http://66.196.225.55/mail I get the error below. Notes: There is a valid index.html localed in that folder. /mail folder = drwxr-xr-x all files within /mail = -rw-r--r-- 66.196.225.55 is public addy for ip noted below This is my 1st linux server & could use a bit of quality advise. centos-yumconf purpose

Hello. I did try to find out some information about centos-yumconf, but I didn't find any. I would like to know what centos-yumconf rpm is made for and what it does (just overwrite the yum.conf file, or copy things from the original and create a new one ?). I dont' really understand the necessity of this package, because I thought that the version upgrade was made through the $releasever environment variable. Any help would be much appreciated. Setting up a local yum repository for CentOS-3.1

Is there an approved procedure for setting up a local yum repository which has all the CentOS-3 patches (3.1 & 3.3)? I don't want to have 2 directories, just a single directory which has all the patches I need. I though the 3.3 directory would have these included but it seems not. If I manually upgrade to centos-release-3.3 (before installing all the 3.1 patches) then I will not get any outstanding patches from 3.1, which might be a problem. As a side issue, is there any reasons for anyone not to upgrade to 3.3? and is running 3.1 still secure? I am running Centos 3.3. Is there any way to get rid of this harmless, but annoying message. This is a non-production environment. I tried editing the syslog.conf file and adding: kern.none /dev/console And I commented out the *.emerg line like this: #*.emerg * I also reloaded the syslog daemon after making the changes. anaconda in 3.3?

Greetings, I'm using centos3 to study for rhce, centos came highly recommended in Michael Jang's rhce study guide. I've been having trouble isntalling via nfs, an early exercise in the book, and googling around leads me to think it might be an anaconda bug. I tried following the anaconda link on the "upgrading from 3.1" page but it's actually a duplicate of the anacron link. Does anyone know if this update addresses anything along these lines? Lesson Learned

Hello all, I learned a very valuable lesson this weekend and thought I would share. I noticed that the xcdroastalpha15-rhel3.i386.rpm's non root mode didn't work very well, so I decided to set out an build my own rpm for it. Well I still can figure out how to add icons to the Main Draw but did finally build a good working RPM. However after doing some reading on the Xcdroast web site, It appears that it is known that the xcdroastalpha15-rhel3.i386.rpm does not work in non-root mode very well and that if you want to use non-root mode you should just download the one for RH9 "xcdroast-0.98alpha15-1.i386.rpm". Hello gillian, You can try adding these options to the kernel commandline and it might help: noapic iommu=off The 2.4/2.6 hybrid kernel that RedHat supplies with RHEL3 has some issues with some AMD64 motherboards AFAIK, and the above options made the CentOS 3's kernel bootable for me on one of our systems. BTW - I've moved this to the CentOS mailing list, that is a more appropriate forum for this question. Please remove the caos(a)caosity.org CC if/when anyone replies. Hello centos community, I have a personal repository with self-made RPMs, and i need to include this repository to yum.conf. But i've noticed that yum configuration is overwritten when yum is updated. I can't update yum.conf manually on my servers each time yum is updated ... Is anyone have an idea ? Thank you. -- Martin

Problems with CentOS 3.3 Disk2 Iso Image?

Hi All, I've downloaded this image (disk 2) from several sites, and it matches the MD5 sum. Burning it to a CD gives no errors, but the disk is failing the self-check at the start, and if I ignore that and try to install I get random packages which "cannot be read". I know the burner is OK, as I've burned other CDs on it just fine after burning the CentOS ones. Any thoughts? -Scott

Possible new CentOS user (currently WBEL)

Hi, For a few months i've been using WhiteBox Enterprise Linux. In fact, i've migrated all my companie's servers (about 20) to this RHEL distro like. Well, it's not that i'm not satisfied, but WBEL is a one man show and that causes me some preocupation. And besides, it seems to me that it can't stand up to the rythm RHEL evolves. That's why i'm writing to you, posing a few questions, if you don't mind to answer: 1 - Why did you choose CentOS ? 2 - If you have/had experience with WBEL, why do you prefer CentOS ? 3 - Is CentOS ahead of WBEL in terms of being up to date with RHEL ? 4 - Does CentOS releases an updated version everytime RH does ? 5 - What is (more or less) the time gap between a RHEL update and the correspondent CentOS ? Sun Gridengine and Centos

G'day. I'm having a little trouble getting Gridengine 5.3 running properly on a cluster using Centos 3.3. Everything appears okay, but my jobs hang in the queue with the gridengine complaining that node is overloaded, but there is nothing (unusual) running on the node and the load is 0. Has anyone else run into similar problems? -geoff
