Problem installing rpms with yum/up2date

Hi all, we have installed a fresh CentOS 3.3 system, imported the keys: rpm --import /usr/share/rhn/RPM-GPG-KEY* trying to install a package fails: up2date -i mysql mysql-3.23.58-1.i386.rpm: ########################## Done. The package mysql-3.23.58-1 is signed, but with an uknown GPG key. Aborting... Package mysql-3.23.58-1 has a unknown GPG signature. Aborting... the same problem with yum yum update Error: Could not find the GPG Key necessary to validate pkg /var/cache/yum/update/packages/cups-1.1.17-13.3.13.i386.rpm Error: You may want to run yum clean or remove the file: /var/cache/yum/update/packages/cups-1.1.17-13.3.13.i386.rpm Error: You may also check that you have the correct GPG keys installed somebody knows what´s going wrong?` tia and best regards!

RHEL / Mini-ITX

Hi Everyone, I'd be grateful if anyone can help with a couple of queries I have. Recently I downloaded Centos 3.3 and cannot get it to install I my system. The system I am using to install is a based on an original EPIA Mini-ITX m/board. At a certain point in installing it comes up with an error saying something like "system not supported". Can anyone advise if they have got Centos installed sucessfully on an ITX system? In truth I am not surprised that it doesn't work as I guess it is not what you would original have seen as being used for an Enterprise Server, but lack-of-space at home prevents me from having a full server. The other query I have relates to differences between RHEL and Centos. I originally downloaded Centos as a means of studying for the RHCE/T certification given that I cannot afford the cost of the commercial/supported version. Can anyone point me to a summary of what is missing from Centos compared to the Red Hat Enterprise release and therefore may potentially hamper my studies. The site briefly mentions that "Non-free packages, such as those encumbered by a non-redistributable copyright or trademark, are altered to avoid infringement". Just installed fresh copy of 3.3 from isos. When I run "yum update" I am getting an error when trying to install updates: "Could not find GPG key necessary to validate....." I am sure I have missed a posting on this issue but have not been able to find it. How do I get & load correct GPG key? Thank you, Beth

software Raid1 on centos3

how is the stability of software raid1 on a system running centos3. i have 2 75gig hard drives that i would like to mirror if possible, that being the reliability is worth it...there will be lots of network traffic on the server. It will be used possibly as a file server, it will most definitely be used also as a mail server and webserver. i would be ok to me to not mirror the drives but this is for my place of employment and im looking to implement a linux server. im not new to linux, just the whole raid situtation. i would like to show my employer how well linux runs in a business environment. does it matter which boot loader i use? i read somewhere that lilo is better for raid than grub. is this true or are others using grub with raid. the hard drives im going to use are ide.

Hi JD' Actually they have drivers for RH 7/8 and 9.0., Suse 8 and 9. It is just that RH ES 3.0 seems different from RH9.0 and CentOS 3.3 doesn't even tells me that the driver is ok or not. Up2date troubles

Hello all, When I go to use up to date, it gets hung up on the "Process Dialog" Fetching http://mirror.centos.org/centos/3.1/ addon/i386//headers/header.info It just stays there and doesn't move. Hi David, This is a new installation of Centos. APIC is disabled. Promise SX4000 RAID FastTrack is shown on the list of drivers CentOS but doesn't know what to do with it not it gives me an error nor displays like an available device. It would be a shame to switch to Microsoft SBS 2003 just to get this RAID card going. Hi, I haven't used that device, but I've been working several issues with a pair of 3Ware 9500's , and we've seen diferences when enabling/disabling APIC on the MB bios (could also try booting the kernel with "noapic"). Also, check in your MB manual if there are any possible conflicting devices, such as the USB sharing the some address or resources of your PCI-X bus (something like that happened to me..). I would also help if you stated clearly what the problem is. Is the module not compiling (do you have the kernel sources installed ?? make sure there is a link /usr/src/linux to the sources...) . Or is the module not loading ? (check dmesg| tail -n20, and look for messages related..). Or is the module loading OK, but when you put load on the device it crashes ?? (that's my problem right now.. I'm working on that one). Hi CentOS lovers, i have already sent this email to [www-devel] but still no answer. What i propose to the comunnity is the creation of a full featured forum. Mailing lists are fine, but one losses a lot of information, how-to's, advices, and so on. I currently am a network administrator / programmer /web programmer in europe and i point the lack of centralized site with information as something that is really needed. It is also an easy way to reach all the comunnity. I dont want to have the spotlight or become famous, but this is really needed. Dominic, If you have two or more nameservers (as is normal), you would have two or more lines in resolv.conf: nameserver xxx.xxx.xxx.1 nameserver xxx.xxx.xxx.2 People usually have more than one nameserver because one might not be working at any moment. Hello all, I have a clerk connect box running at my library and it is based on RH9. I am having a little trouble with resolving URLs. I have two nics in it. eth0 with an Internet connection and and eth1 which is my inhouse LAN. Now I can ping IPs on the Lan, and On the net but I can not ping URL's (www.yahoo.com) now I do have an entry in resolv.conf nameserver xxx.xxx.xx.xxx and this setup works the same on other Linux boxes some redhat some CentOS. I'm only doing that for tools like lftp, rsync and a few others. (Tools that have been drastically improved since the RHEL3 release and most people want to use anyway). But of course that is more a personal liking and especially if you have paid for Red Hat support that may not be what you want. Still since it can be done automatically, I think this logic should go into Yum instead of the overhead you get from maintaining a second repository. NeTraverse Win4Lin 5.0

Anybody get win4lin 5.0 running on CentOs? I have a Ibm Thinkpad 600 running centos 3.3. I tried running the win4lin installer which downloaded a supported kernel and installed but when I went to reboot the laptop, the drivers for my wireless card were missing along with usb support. Then when the laptop went into run level 5 nothing happens. Then the x server throughs an error about a bad config. So I cancel it and it doesn't even go to the cl login. I have also tried to patch the source that I downloaded from yum and the wireless and usb work, but still having the problems with the x server. I am fairly familiar with linux but not to familiar with the x server stuff. I was just wondering if someone had successfully got it to work and if they can tell me what they did, or have somebody point me into the right direction of where to look. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Dan

Check out the CentOS/RedHat family tree at the bottom of the migration center. BTW, I recently did a desktop install RedHat 9 to CentOS-3 migration as an experiment. There were come package incompatibilities that blocked the migration via YUM, so I did "yum remove" on each package that yum complained about. After removing a couple of rpm's, the migration went ahead. Afterward, I did "yum install" to put the packages back that I had removed. That seems to be a successful approach. Hey, Has anyone installed a java applet on a CentOS-3? http://rpmfind.net/linux/RPM/ASP/contribs/9/i386/j2re-java-plugin-1.4.2_02-… I need a java applet for some functionality accessing my SmoothWall firewall from a workstation on the internal network. Hey, I have two bits of info that suggest this is more of a RedHat problem than a Linux problem: 1) A high school friend had exactly this problem (screen when blank when booting up) on a computer running RedHat 9. (A different monitor had been used to install RedHat 9, and that monitor worked OK. Later, my high school friend got a different monitor, which went blank on boot up.) I solved the problem for my friend by swapping his nVIDIA card for a Voodoo Banshee. (And then I upgraded him to CentOS-3.) 2) I tried doing a Debian X desktop install on my test bench system with the nVIDIA TNT2 card plugged in. Debian's X install is more manual (less automatic) than under CentOS. I had to tell it which driver to use ("nv"), which I found by looking it up via Google. Debian could not get X to load -- after the screen flashed several times, Debian gave up and dumped me onto a text prompt with some messages on the screen. Maybe it is fair to say that it is a Linux problem, which RedHat 9 and its descendants do not handle well. Rick

Trying to install FastTrak TX2000 in box with CentOS 3.3 (kernal 2.4.21-20.EL.c0) install. Just downloaded Redhat 8/9 driver from Promise. But "sh install" says correct driver not found on diskette. Any suggestions? Thaks

yum updated to 3.3, rpmdb corrupted

I'd guess this is probably something pretty specific to my test box, but when I yum updated to 3.3 my rpmdb got totally hosed. Unfortunately, I didn't save the error that occured at the time because a rpm --rebuilddb _appeared_ to fix the problem. Unfortunately I found out later that I was left with a db that only contained a subset of the actual install base. I'm now trying to recover from the /var/log/rpmpkgs file. Later I will be adding /var/lib/rpm to my backups.... This topic is near and dear to my heart, as I first encountered the problem when I was trying to install CentOS on machine with an nVIDIA card and using a monitor with which nVIDIA cards do not work (my Mag DX1495). At the beginning, I did not know that the card was the problem, I only knew that the screen went blank toward the end of the install. In addition to trying to solve the problem by tweeking the XF86Config file (boy, was that futile!), it literally took me hours of parts swapping, distribution swapping, and OS swapping (trying Windows too), to finally figure out that the nVIDIA card was the problem. (Some might say that the card/monitor combination was the problem, but Windows has no problem with the combination.) I've found this ftp server to be the easiest and most secure to set-up for Redhat systems. Go to: http://www.pureftpd.org/ The Redhat binary (rpm) version can be downloaded here: ftp://ftp.pureftpd.org/pub/pure-ftpd/releases/binaries/redhat/ You'll probably want the "i686" version. Install the rpm package (you'll need to be root to do this): # rpm -Uvh pure-ftpd-1.0.19-1.i686.rpm And that's it. (rpm -q vsftpd) If it's not, it'll be on your install media or can easily be acquired with "yum -y install vsftpd" Then do "service vsftpd start" to start the FTP server. Are you just trying to prove the concept today, or do you need your user to be able to upload files to the document root right now? If the former, simply create a new user account and set a password for it. The vsftpd server will immediately allow logins to the users' home directory with their username/password. Any files placed in public_html/ in a home directory should be automatically mapped by apache to httpd://[server.dom.ain]/~[userid]/. I have never had the problem of a monitor not being detected, though if you have tv out and no monitor plugged in then tv out will be used when the machine is powered on. I have an RPM which I wrote which rebuilds the driver (if necessary) and loads it at boot time. Someone already suggested that you use scp/ssh which is what I would recommend. There is a decent windows program called winscp which is similar to windows ftp programs. There is also a command line tool from putty called pscp. When it comes to NAT, you need to look at both the internal and external networks separately. Firstly, assuming you want the external network (The internet) to connect to your web server, you need to allow port 80. If you want the external network to talk to your ssh server (for scp) then you need port 22 as well. If ssh is only for internal then you don't need to worry about NAT. Also (AFAIK) if you are using NAT then there should be a 1 to 1 mapping from internal to external IP addresses, in which case it is quite likely that all ports are translated and forwarded anyway. If you mean you have a 1 to many (Only one IP on the internet) then you need to nominate which IP of the many to forward connections to (port forwarding). None of this has anything to do with a command line and everything to do with reading the manuals/FAQs/HOWTOs etc. John. I've been Googling on this all day, installing GPG Keys, and trying different yum configurations. I noticed a similar question in the list a couple of months ago about going from RHEL to Centos-3, but the answer wasn't definitive. Has anyone done this? Can this be done? Can it be done with yum? If so, how? When I 'yum update' I get /usr/bin/yum, yummain.main, yummain.py, clientStuff.py errors, and a "ValueError: unpack list of wrong size" error. Would definitely appreciate any direction. I need a setup where one user can ftp from another desktop (windows) to upload new website files. I currently have CuteFTP, but will use anything needed at this point. I need to try to test this today. VERY new to linux, I am completely bogged down trying to learn command-line syntax. Thanks in advance, Beth

Sorry if this is off topic, but the cpan mail list seems quite ded, and I was wondering if any of you have had the same problem. when ever I do a perl -MCPAN -e "install Bundle::CPAN" I get this error: ---------------------------------- Net::Telnet is up to date. network card / kudzu

When I have installed centOS, Kudzu says my network cards have been removed, and right after it finds them again and asks me to configure them? It looks like it is the same thing it finds that it just said was removed. There are 3 Relatek|RTL-8139/8139C/8139C+ cards in there and it is all of them it will remove and reconfigure. It doesn't matter if I select ignore or reconfigure them, they still work after the reboot. It is just a little strange and seems a little buggy ;) brgds Ulrik

At the beginning, I did not know that the card was the problem, I only knew that the screen went blank toward the end of the install. In addition to trying to solve the problem by tweeking the XF86Config file (boy, was that futile!), it literally took me hours of parts swapping, distribution swapping, and OS swapping (trying Windows too), to finally figure out that the nVIDIA card was the problem. (Some might say that the card/monitor combination was the problem, but Windows has no problem with the combination.) I have just set up a box - HOSTNAME mail.abni.com It has Qmail setup. I also want this box to serve as the host for our website - abni.com Can someone point me in the direction of where to go next. I am unsure if HOSTNAME will be a problem as a web server. Currently I have loaded a html doc in - /var/www/html, but I had to load from cd directly on this machine. Is is neccessary to setup ftp to be able to upload html from remote system? Don't know if this is important at this point - but this system is NAT'd to an internal ip. Heck of a 1st Linux project, huh. That's for all the advice. Beth

Thank you for the answer to my question, it is much appreciated. Although there are solutions to the problem as other people point out. I don't see the point in using a graphics card which works with drivers that have to be rebuilt everytime the kernel is updated. I've been there and done it, it is unnecessary in 2004. Kevin Wood. Hey, This was exactly the situation under CentOS 3.1. Moral of the nVIDIA story: if the monitor/display card/motherboard combination works for you, great. Christopher, The wording of my email came out wrong. I did not intend to cast aspersions on CentOS. I wrote to the CentOS and/or cAos mailing lists some months ago on this topic, and I also put up an FAQ on the problem (which you can find in the FAQ's under Installation). In my mind, my message yesterday was in the context of my prior emails and the FAQ. Back then, I went through hours of trial and error tests, and I found exactly the same problem with exactly the same hardware when I was running Fedora 1 (and perhaps Debian as well -- on Debian, I am not sure, but I am 100% sure about Fedora). Hey, I tried it. The short answer is that nVIDIA cards are OK for text, but may not work at all under X. I downloaded the 3.3 ISO's, and burned new CD's. I did an X desktop install on a test bench P3 600 MHz system with a 4.3 gig drive. I did the install with a known-to-work Voodoo Banshee card to get the system going. I used a Mag DX1495 monitor, which I know does not to work on Linux with nVIDIA cards (but which works just fine running Windows with nVIDIA cards). Everything installed OK with only a minor glitch toward the end (just when going into the reboot, after setting up the monitor and display card, there were some messages about cannot find some graphics files). After going into my regular user account and adjusting some preferences, I shut the system down, replaced the Voodoo Banshee card with an nVIDIA Riva TNT 2 card, and restarted the computer. During startup, kudzu detected the hardware change, and configured the machine for the new card following my confirmation. (Windows can do this automatically, why not Linux?) Sure enough, when X tried to load, the screen went blank. Not only did the screen go blank for the X console #7, but the screen was blank for the 6 other consoles as well. I knew this because I could change to my favorite with F2, then Ctl-Alt-del to reboot. The screen stayed blank until the computer began the new boot, when the screen came back. This was exactly the situation under CentOS 3.1. Moral of the nVIDIA story: if the monitor/display card/motherboard combination works for you, great. If not, using a display card from a different manufacturer may be the best solution. IMHO. Rick

This brings me to two questions: (1) Is the aforementioned kernel patch already present in the CentOS-3.3 kernels? (2) (Somwhat OT) Is there an equivalent pagecache tweak for RedHat 9? The /proc/sys/vm/pagecache "device" is not present in RH9.

Thank you for the long awaited x86_64 port! Looking through the RedHat pages concerning their EL releases, I find that the ES and WS versions claim to support only 2 CPUs while the AS version supports, well, more. With the CentOS releases following the ES releases, can I assume that this too is limited to two CPUs? Is this a kernel issue or something else? Should I be thinking of loading a non-CentOS release on a quad Opteron box? Thanks, Bill

yum configuration files lost while/after updating ?

Hello centOS users, Today i've installed a fresh centos 3.1, and modified the [update] section of my/etc/yum.conf, to point on my own update repository. My update repository (3.1) contains exactly the same content that the official one. An error about the missing file is no longer displayed. error in cron.daily email report

after i updated to 3.3....in my daily email report for /etc/cron.daily i get the following: many times over anyone know what may be causing it? i have search google zcat: stdout: Broken pipe then the last thing to show is my script to run my awstats updates i didnt have this problem before i updated to 3.3 i have read on google that i might be a $LANG setting issue

I am currently running centOS-3.1. I have not received any package updates since Sept 1. Is this in part due to creating new isos which would be named centOS-3.3. How would I go about updating my system from centOS-3.1 to centOS-3.3, or would I even need to and just keep downloading updates like i do now. My system is running very smoothly with no errors or issues, I was just wondering why there hasnt been any package updates available. Would it be necessary to download the new isos and upgrade my system? Will the package updates be available still for centOS-3.1.

Hi all, Here's what's going on. The 3.3 tree is built. All the updates are built. It's all ready to go. I'm going to merge in all the package changes from 3.1 to 3.3 (including centos-release) into the 3.1/updates path. Then when you run yum update you'll be running 3.3. However! If your /etc/yum.conf file does not use $releasever to specify repositories then you won't get any new updates to 3.3. More announcements coming as I have time. Sorry. -sv

Hey, I thought I had been paying attention, but I do not know what is going on. On the mirrors, under centos-3, we now have directories named 3.1, 3.2 & 3.3. The CentOS-3 I have been using for some months came from 3.1. The 3.2 directory is dated September 11th and seems to be empty. The 3.3 directory is dated September 16th and has stuff in it, such as rpm's, but no header files for yum. If someone would kindly explain what is going on, I would update the web site with a news item if appropriate. Thanks, Rick

Hi, does anyone have plans on adding an apt repository? I used apt-get with Synaptic RH8 with fedoralegacy.org which made things so much easier to manage compared to yum/up2date. An interesting bug in RHEL 3(which affects CentOS 3) has been bantered around for a while. There are some kernel patches(beyond my scope right now) or some echo statements tht are used(this helped my situation). The newest 2.4.x kernels have these patches incorporated. Would centOS 3 go nuts if i installed the latest kernel from kernel.org? <btw the issue is that the 2.4.xx kernels ahve a tendency to fill up ram with cache..which is normal. The bug is that the kernel then refuses to rlease the cache and instead starts swapping...which i have noticed in my little install here. What i did to fix it as a workaround(noted in the buzilla report here: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=89226 is to send the following command at the command line: (echo 1 10 10 >/proc/sys/vm/pagecache) I have noticed this is another RH9 server i ahve access to and will be trying it on that box too as well as my linux firewall.> -- My "Foundation" verse: Isa 54:17 No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper; and every tongue that shall rise against thee in judgment thou shalt condemn. Is there a novice level way to produce a distro/copy/whatever of an installation so that I can duplicate it on a new box? Is there a hard drive copy application that can copy linux drives? Beth
