In regard of the e-mail sent on Jul/16/04 about the 3Ware 9500S. Has anyone experienced/solved this issue ?? I'm having a similar problem, I already have the system installed on a separate disk, now I want to make the filesystem on the RAID partition (using 3Ware 9500S-8). First I had the problem that the card will keep resetting after continous timeouts whenever I tried loading the module (compiled from source, in up-mode, driver v.9.2 from 3Ware's website). The solution to this was to disable APIC on the motherboard (or boot linux without APIC support). So, now the module loads ok (I've tried SMP and ENT versions, I'm using kernel 2.4.21-15.0.4-ELsmp). But the timeout and reset problem start happening again when I try to create the filesystem on the RAID partition. I can cancel the mkfs operation, but then I get a kernel panic if I try to unload the module (rmmod 3w-9xxx), just like the problem that the previous poster had. Any ideas or input would be appreciated. David

Using yum to do downgrades

This is a yum question but relates to some work I am doing with CentOS and other recent discussions on this list so I though I would post here first. Basically I am attempting a Red Hat 7.2 -> CentOS-2 upgrade. So far it has worked like a charm. The problem is though that yum (no doubt by design) will not downgrade packages to the CentOS versions. The problem is that some old RPMs have 72 in the release (for Red Hat 7.2) and the newer package as 21 in the release (For Enterprise Linux 2.1). Some others are updates to 7.2 which increased the version number where as 2.1 got a backported fix and increased release number. Is there a way to make yum always select a particular Vendor or Distribution? What about using yum to do an explicit downgrade "yum install mypackage-version-oldrelease"? Also, this is an rpm question, does anyone know if I can do "rpm --erase redhat-logos" and "rpm -i centos-logos" at the same time? If I put an obsoletes: tag into centos-logos will yum do that for me? Is that a good idea? At the moment I have a bash script which trys to work out the downgrade rpm commands but I can not check dependencies. Any other suggestions, tips or tricks would be appreciated. XF86Setup

Hello. I am looking for the famous XF86Setup command used on RedHat 7.1 (for XFree86) but I didn't find it on CentOS 3.1. Did it change into something else ? Else how can I configure my monitor, mouse, video card settings ? Same questions for starting the hardware material configurator. How can I force it to run ? I know that it runs automatically at boot when we change a card or device, but how to force starting this program manually ? Thanks, Daniel

up2date-4.2-33-1.centos.3.1

After installing from CD I ran up2date and it looks like I got everything updated. For some reason the up2date icon stays red and tells me that I have up2date-4.2-33-1.centos.3.1 installed but latest version is up2date-4.5.1.centos.3.1 which is the old version of up2date. All the files it wants me to up2date to are the old files. Is this normal for Centos and will it correct itself when new updates come out? thanks all. _______________________________ Do you Yahoo!? RHN-like system for CentOS?

Team, Is anyone aware of a Red Hat Network alike system of server package update status that could be adapted for CentOS3? I'm not interested in the complete management aspect (channels, scheduling remote updates, etc) but merely the ability to see your list of systems and determine which are out of date with XXX packages. Yes it is all the reason why we want to change to Centos (longer EOL), and we think the stability in RHE should be worth something. It's not always the best to run the newest and the best especially on a production server. So is there anyway to do it other than from yum or to manually force install all the rpm downloaded in the cache? CentOS 3.1: sshd and pam /etc/security/limits.conf file descriptor settings problem

Why can't non-uid 0 users have more than 1024 file descriptors when logging in via ssh? I'm trying to allow a user to have a hard limit of 8192 file descriptors(system defaults to 1024) via the following setting in /etc/security/limits.conf: jdoe hard nofile 8192 But when jdoe logs in via ssh and does 'ulimit -Hn' he gets '1024' as a response. If he tries to set it with 'ulimit -Hn 8192' he gets an 'Operation not permitted' error. If jdoe instead telnets to the box, he gets the hard limit of 8192 file descriptors. Here is what happens when I set the hard limit to 512 in limits.conf: jdoe hard nofile 512 When jdoe logs in via ssh, he gets a hard limit of 512 file descriptors. The same goes for telnet. So ssh is certainly reading the limits.conf file and applying the settings, so long as nofile <= 1024. Why won't ssh allow users to have more than 1024 file descriptors??? Many thanks! -Sean

Kickstart and aliased network interfaces

Hi, small(?) problem here: We have several servers which have aliased interfaces (e.g. gigabit: one alias points to the net the backupserver is in, the other one "connects" to the filer the machine needs for work). So I'd like to generate this setup with kickstart (yes, I *could* do that with cfengine or other tools, but want to have the general config in kickstart). Alas: network --bootproto=static --device=eth1:0 --ip=10.65.193.166 --netmask=255.255.255.0 isn't really taken well by anaconda, it barfs up some python-backtrace and stops the installation (it would be neat, if this would be handled friendlier, as in "would you like to continue even though I don't know what you mean"). Any solution for that? Up2date confusion

Hi, I installed 3.1 from CD and ran up2date without changing /etc/sysconfig/rhn/rhn-source. Checking some of the files it appears I have all the updates including the updates from the last few weeks. However up2date for some reason shows that I still need to update and lists old and current files in the list of available updates. 3Ware Escalade 9500S controller question

I took a look at the spec file and there was nothing about snmp commented out. So did a search for a spec file for EL3 and found one which had the snmp module set to build. Looked it over and copied what sections refer to snmp. When I add the line: %file snmp -f files.snmp I get the error-> Could not open %file /usr/src/redhat/BUILD/php-4.3.2/files.snmp: No such file or directory If I remove this line, I get an error about an upackaged file that is called snmp.o Reading up I found that if you receive the second error you need to add the %file line for the file that is missing and that is what I did in the first place. I have never built my own rpm before so I am new to this. Any help would be appreciated. There will be cases which need special handling. I think mozilla-psm is now included in the core mozilla package. If the new mozilla does not have the correct tags to tell yum that mozilla-psm can be removed then you have have to remove it manually beforehand. These are the kinds of tasks which we need documented. I was also thinking, it might be possible to create dummy packages which provide these kinds of dependencies so you can add the dummy module to your yum.conf and then it will be more automatic. There are others on the list that know more about yum than me and might have some ideas. Maintainers and security updates

Hi, can someone tell how many are behind maintaining the site and converting security and regular RHEL fixes for Centos-3? I see the last round of security updates for RHEL were turned out in a day which is impressive. Trying to get an idea if Centos has alot of community support and being maintained by more than one person. I am not confident enough yet in building my own updates. I am another RH 7.1/8.0 admin that labored over the decision to go with Fedora Legacy 6 months for these servers only to find mailings to stop without any notice. Since it seemed awfully quiet for a time I checked their website and found support suspended for these version due to lack of community involvement. Updates? Last samba package from RedHat? Cd images for update 3?

Dear Centos-3 Maintainers, there are several new (september) packages from redhat for RHEL3 especially https://rhn.redhat.com/errata/RHBA-2004-430.html (samba 3.0.6). Perhaps these new packages are not security updates, but .... I am having problems printing in current samba-3.0.4-6.3E which I believe shall be resolved with the new samba. Do you guys intend to rebuild last redhat updates, or I should do it on my own? Also, do you intend to make new CD images with the new RHEL update 3? OT: firewalls

What is everyone using for a firewall? I'm currently using www.astaro.com but their recent releases have soured me on ASL as a practical solution on my hardware (1.2MHz Athlon, 30G, and 256M). I only have 4 computers going through the firewall wall but it's consistently at 50% cpu load. There is very little network traffic (<10k bits per second on the wan connection, < 40k bits per second between other internal lans (I have 4 internal lans and a wan)) Basically I'm using it for: packet filtering, masq, port forwarding, IDS, dns proxy (only if my internal DNS servers have failed) smtp proxy smtp virus protection smtp spam protection http proxy (caching) http virus protection http url monitoring (via Cobain) the firewall also monitors a bunch of statistics, etc. I'm looking for something that is installed, configured and runs. I don't want to be tweaking this parameter of postfix, that parameter of the smtp virus protection, etc. I want something that just works that I don't need to play with except for new rules, etc. I'll pay a reasonable price for a package that I can test to verify suitable performance (I'm not a commercial operation, this is just for my toys). At the moment, I'm looking at Gibraltar. But the community seems small. I haven't downloaded it yet but I'm considering it an option for this round of firewall evaluation. Any other suggestions for inclusion? BTW, anything like smoothwall that allows wide open outbound connections and doesn't support a box with 5 network cards off the CD is not a viable candidate. Greg, Does this change effect me? My (default) yum.cong files point to mirror.centos.org. Do I need to point at different mirrors? At about midnight Sunday night your time, I was experimenting with migrating RedHat 9 to CentOS-3. When I tried yum check-update, I got an error message that http://mirror.centos.org could not be found. BTW, twice I tried to send this message to caos-mirror(a)casosity.org like you asked, and twice it came back immediately as undeliverable. (I copied and pasted the address.) Rick

sorry for the massive cross-post, but I wanted to make sure that I get everyone that needs to know this. Mirror.caosity.org is having problems keeping up with all of the mirrors. Rsync is a memory hog when dealing with large repositories, and mirror just can't handle it. I am migrating mirror.caosity.org to a new host which should be able to handle the load better. Also, I will be limiting the IP's that can rsync directly to mirror. Only the public mirrors will be allowed to connect directly to mirror.caosity.org via rsync. Expect this migration to happen in the next several days, and please let me and the caos-mirror list know if there are any problems. I restarted again the rebuild but 3w-xxxx: scsi2: AEN: INFO: Rebuild started: Unit #0. 3w-xxxx: scsi2: Unit #0: Command (f7545c00) timed out, resetting card. Ok, I'm a solid Rock, I try to rebuild again but at the 68% the rebuild failed again.. Of course I checked RAM and HD and all is OK, I also changed the IDE cables. HW proliant ML370 G2 wtih 2 GB RAM 1 controller 3ware escalade 7000-6 2 HD Samsung 160GB RAID1 2 SCSI seagate cheetah 18GB SW RAID1 So, is this a Kernel bug ? Thank You, Maurizio

Hi there. Although RHEL 3 is available for several different architectures, CentOS appears to only be available for the i386 architecture. Are alternative architecture rebuilds outside the scope of the CentOS project, or is there some other specific reason for that? If one wanted to rebuild CentOS for, let's say the AMD64 architecture, would that be a difficult process, or is it just something that nobody's yet done? I am currently in the process of updating all centos modified packages to contain the release suffix .c2.$n This will help identify modified packages and aid with RedHat -> CentOS upgrades. These packages have been rebuilt but should be the same as the previous release. It should be safe to update them but of course when upgrading the boot loader it is always wise to use some caution. Messing around with iptables

Hello all, I am messing around with iptables, trying to learn how it works so that I can build my self a router/firewall and mabey a VPN. Anyway I tried to use a command on my Desktop CentOS3 machine. "iptables -A INPUT -s 127.0.0.1 -p icmp -j DROP" now the command seems to have went through because I didn't get any errors, but when I go to ping 127.0.0.1 I am getting a response and my packet loss is 0%. im just using the default /etc/sysconfig/rhn/sources file with up2date i didnt add or remove any mirrors in the file i could add another mirror to the file and fix it how you did yours.... could i also install the previous version of up2date so i can recieve updates till this version gets fixed that would not cause any problems would it?

CentOS-2 update 5 is about to be released. As of update 5, Netscape 4.8 will be removed from the distribution. The currently shipped version of Netscape 4.8 has security flaws and should not be used. Users of CentOS-2 should uninstall the Netscape packages and switch to using mozilla. For more information see RHSA-2004:429-01 Also, in order to easily identify packages which have been modified for CentOS-2, the release suffix .c2.release will be appended to the existing release. All packages which currently are missing this suffix will be reissued with the new suffix. The suffix release will always start at 1 and be incremented if a package needs to be reissues with only centos changes. When the original release is increased, the centos release will start again at 1. This is part of a new automated procedure which should result in reproducible modifications which will speed up the release of errata for modified packages and cut down on errors in the modification process. centos31 anaconda bug with lvm lvcreate?

Hi I just tried to install centos3.1 from the 3cd. I removed all existing partitions and made a custom partitionning: a /boot partition /dev/hda1 and a lvm physical volume for the rest: /dev/hda2 in the lvm volume group I placed all other partitions including root (/) The anaconda crashed because of an error in lvcreate for the root partition. Is there a problem with that? I did reboot and restarted with then same config and it is now installing. I have saved the debug info on a floppy if anyone interested. Thanks Sophana

That is a good start, and a good looking web page. Your wizard idea is fancier than what I had in mind. I was thinking of a table listing the starting points and in the left column and the sensible options in the right column. Then step by step instructions for each supported migration path. (I can imagine writing step by step instructions by actually doing it and taking notes as I go.) I agree that we do not have to rush it. On the other hand, I do not know what the schedule for the new web site will be. As for the migration center content (plain text type content), I suggest we move at our own pace, and when we are ready, either put the content in the existing site or in the new site, whichever is available. When cAos moves to the new site, much if the text will get copied from the old site and pasted into the new site anyway. Since I do not know anything about the schedule for the new site, I can imagine that it could take more time than doing a useful migration center. I simply suggest that we do not let any potential problems in doing a whole new web site delay putting out migration information that people could be using right now. > Each procedure could have a forum where people can contribute feedback, like they do with the php manual. This would be best. > Another thing I might have a play with is a family tree. That might help people see the differences between versions. That is another good suggestion. I could do these two: RedHat 9 -> reinstall CentOS-3.1 RedHat 9 -> live update to CentOS-3.1 I am volunteering for these because I already have RedHat 9 and CentOS-3.1 CD's. The only rub is on Saturday I go on vacation, and at the end of August I will be back to where I have my computer junk. I could do those two in early September. The LinWiz iptables wizards cannot help you, a router/firewall/VPN application is too complicated for them. If you do not care about reinventing the wheel, then proceed with your learning experience. If you just want a router/firewall/VPN, look at Smoothwall. A mountain of effort and expertise has been put into that dedicated firewall distribution, and I suspect there is NO WAY anything you could do on your own could come close. But if your purpose is to have a learning experience, then you are on the right track. Hey scty Library, I forget your name. I do not have an answer for your question exactly. However, I think I have a solution to the overall problem, and it is here: http://www.lowth.com/LinWiz/1.09/ I use the wizards to create my iptables files. I have a couple of basic files that I use, and then I tweek the appropriate one after copying it to a new install. For people who want a solution fast, the two wizards are great. I hope this helps. suggestions for CentOS

Hi to all, I have some suggestions to make about the CentOS 3. I think that this would be great to include many questions we have on this mailing list into the FAQs of the centOS site. They are so poor, that we feel like nothing is happening for this centos 3, and in fact this seems to be a very good distribution.. too sad.. Probably that finding a way to access the mailing list archive through a search for non-subscribers would help a lot new users, and motivate them. I also had contact with the switch.ch mirror site of Switzerland (1Gbit/s), and they would be ready to mirror your distribution if it would become more known. So there should not be any bandwidth problems, and I wish that CentOS 3 will become known from the others. It's so strange, nobody knows about it.. A better documentation on your site would perhaps also help a bit, and motivate people to use it. Especially making a bigger difference on the site between cAos and CentOS 3 would be great (the way the site is designed). I also regret to not find any information on google groups about that. It's so sad.. Isn't it possible to post your e-mails to google groups (open a new channel for centos, etc..) ? In all cases, thank you for all, I'm very pleased to use CentOS 3 and try to make it known by others ! Hope this will help.. Daniel

rpm --rebuild problem

Hi to all. I'm having a problem with the rpm command. I am used to recompile a source rpm with the following command: rpm --rebuild sympa-4.1.2-8.src.rpm The problem is that the result is as following: --rebuild: unknown option I tried to rebuild the rpm database, with --rebuilddb, but nothing does. I have installed CentOS 3.1 (latest) and I also have updated the rpm package to the version number: rpm-4.2.2-0.14 I have of course installed or updated the rpm-build, rpm-devel, rpm-python. I thought that it was this version of rpm, so I downgraded the version to : rpm-4.2.1-4.4 (also all other rpm packages). But problem is the same. Does anybody know something about that ? Else, can somebody tell me if he was able to use the rpm --rebuild option on CentOS 3.1 ? Or should I ask this question on the newsgroup linux.redhat.rpm (they might not be happy if I'm a CentOS user..) ? Thanks you in advance, Daniel

Shockwave Flash player for CentOS

Hey, I am using CentOS-3 as a desktop distribution. With the exception of fewer red hats and some different logos, it looks exactly like RedHat 9 to me. The problem is some web sites do not work right, as there is no Shockwave Flash player and Java support seems to be a problem. For some web sites, I have to used Windows. I prefer not to download and install something that YUM could not help keep up to date. If I volunteered to be the "package maintainer", could browser enhancements be included in the "extras"? I am volunteering to be the package maintainer in part because I expect I would not actually have to do any package maintenance. Micromedia has a download for Mozilla under Linux, http://www.macromedia.com/shockwave/download/alternates/ and they say they support it for RedHat. I am hoping I will find a similar solution for Java. What do you say? Thanks, Rick Graves

hi I am triing to make samba service authenticate trought Win2k domain. It works quite well, but I want make "homes" for users (the server will have an IMAP server and I need to make home for user on the first logon. It does not work ... and what is worst, it does not make ANY notice in any log Yes I know "debug" should do it, but does not. Hi, I have a (stupid?) problem getting xmms-mp3 added to a CentOS 3.1 desktop: 'xmms' is the distro one, and 'xmms-mp3' comes from Dag Wieers (I used to use freshrpms on redhat 9, but for some reason freshrpms doesn't do rhel3). How to get 3Ware 9500S controller card working in CentOS 3.1?

My goal is to be able to install to the drive array on the 3Ware controller card. 3Ware does provide a RH WS 3 driver that I've tried to use; however, the RH Enterprise 3 WS driver doesn't work since that kernel is older than the CentOS-3.1 install kernel. I'm trying to create a centOS-3.1 installation driver disk for the 3ware 9500S card; however, I'm not having much luck. I've compiled the drivers on a stock centOS 3.1 install and created a modules.cgz file (using find . -depth | cpio -o -H newc | gzip -c > ../modules.cgz) with the newly-compiled driver modules. Here are the contents of the modules.cgz file I created: 2.4.21-9.0.1.EL.c0BOOT/i386/3w-9xxx.o 2.4.21-9.0.1.EL.c0hugemem/i386/3w-9xxx.o 2.4.21-9.0.1.EL.c0/i386/3w-9xxx.o 2.4.21-9.0.1.EL.c0smp/i386/3w-9xxx.o I've also tried the above without the 'i386' subdirectory. The stock install kernel version is 2.4.21-9.0.1.EL.c0. That IS what I should use for the modules directory name right? I then created a driver disk with the following files: modinfo modules.cgz modules.dep pcitable rhdd-6.1 src When I boot the install CD, I type: "linux dd". I then tell the installer that the drivers are on fd0. The installer reads the disk, but doesn't find the driver and gives me this message: "No devices of the appropriate type were found on this driver disk. Would you like to manually select the driver, continue anyway, or load another driver disk?" Does anybody know what I'm doing wrong? Am I going about this the hard way?
