CentOS 3.1 kernel crashes

Greetings everyone, I've got a problem with my fileserver running CentOS 3.1. The kernel seems to crash about once a day (inevitably when I'm not present), forcing me to reboot. This behavior started after I applied the new kernel patch (2.4.21-15.0.3.EL.c0). I've left it on 2.4.21-15.0.2 for a little bit to see if it will crash tonight/tomorrow. As this may be a hardware problem, I'm reluctant to put it into bugzilla until I can pin it on something. The server has an A-Bit KR7A motherboard with an Athlon XP 1700+, 1.5 GB of RAM, 4 120 GB ATA-100 hard drives mirrored in two sets (hence I only have 240 GB available), a Cirrus Logic GD 5430 video card, and an Intel EtherExpress Pro 100. There is nothing useful in /var/log/messages and the only reason I know when it crashes is due to my fetchmail log. Has anyone else seen anything like this? Did I patch too soon? Any suggestions on where I might look for info on why it's crashing? The screen's blank and the keyboard lights are flashing. Thanks in advance, Shawn M. Jones

I plan to highlight the differences between RHEL and CentOS 3.1. Making this information clearly available without the need for duplicated effort across the world. This will help others take CentOS in different directions benefiting us all. It will help individuals create new projects more easily and efficiently. Are the diff files readily available, can I download them from anywhere? If the diff files were made available with each update, the community would understand more, less questions and confusion would occur. More scrutiny would result in a better product for us all. RHEL takes open source software and closes it. CentOS takes this closed software and reopens it. By making the changes open to public inspection, CentOS would become 100% open source. I have no wish to waste months of effort duplicating your work, even if I write scripts to automate the task. I can host the files on a server if you have no wish to do so at caosity. Kernel packages and 3rd party kernel modules

Hi, I'd like to come back to this topic. We've discussed this before on IRC but there's still no acceptable solution implemented. 3rd party kernel-modules are build against the official Red Hat kernels, to make them work with the TaoLinux/CentOS kernels there are specific requirements: + kernel RPM package should provide the same version/release + kernel version/release should be the same for o /lib/modules/kernel-version-release o /boot/vmlinuz-version-release This means there's not much room for customization if you want 3rd party modules to work. You can have a different version in the RPM as long as the Red Hat version/release is also provided by the package and the kernel-files/directories have the exact version/release. To give you a better understanding of the pitfalls: | Installing a kernel-module, beware that I already do not require an | exact version for the kernel RPM package, because that has other | problems. Still I need to make sure I have an exact kernel and that's | why we use the vmlinuz file. [root@breeg root]# rpm -ihvU kernel-module-openswan-2.4.21-15.0.2.EL-2.1.2-1.1.el3.dag.i586.rpm error: Failed dependencies: /boot/vmlinuz-2.4.21-15.0.2.EL is needed by kernel-module-openswan-2.4.21-15.0.2.EL-2.1.2-1.1.el3.dag | Loading a module (I --nodeps installed the module), gives the following | warning. can't find SDL_mixer

Hello all, I just installed SDL_mixer-1.2.4-9.rpm and I can see all the files in /usr/lib. I can also see them listed in ld.so.conf but when I run a .configure in supertux I get an error checking for Mix_OpenAudio in -lSDL_mixer... no configure: error: SDL_mixer library required what am I doing wrong. Well, I figured it out all. The problem was the AGP driver, Not the Nvidia driver. When I set the Option "NvAGP" "1" it works fine. By setting this option to 1, it tells the kernel to load the agp module made by nvidia not the Generic Linux kernel which is AGPGART. Something else I discovered is that the AGPGART module isn't even loading when the kernel boots. For some reason the CentOS-3 installer won't install that module when I install the distro on a computer using an Nforce2 motherboard. It does installing it on my Home computer which is running an Nforce1 based motherboard. I'd like to get Ethereal to run on CentOS 3x. Now, yum says everything is in place for ethereal, but I can't find any executable and am feeling real dumb. I've checked numerous forums (and the Red Hat site), but I can't find anything specific. I've used locate and find, but while there is a lot of ethereal material spread around on my CentOS 3 server, I'm missing the big piece to run it. Anyone point me in the right direction? Usually less than 24 hours but there is a libpng security update that hasnt been taken care of im guessing because its been 3 days since the posting on redhats site.. i have checked all the mirrors listed on the site (centOS) and yet to see the updated libpng rpm... i understand that kernel issues are some what different in being that it deals with pretty much the whole system..but... a libpng update is something rather small and could have been released already...i have rebuilt the src.rpm on a test server (using rpmbuild --rebuild src.rpm) but didnt know exactly if that was the proper way to rebuild the src rpms (if thats how the people at centOS do those) and didnt install it on my production server...and if it is that easy then i could just rebuild the src.rpms that dont need any spec file changes until i get a better understanding of what needs to be changed in those type of situations..and just wait for kernel updates from the people at centOS themselves to rebuild those(kernel updates) i am using up2date to keep my system updated with the necessary updates from the servers...could that be an issue or not? i have no problem rebuilding the src.rpms if how i do it is the proper and correct way to accomplish such a task..

I am running centos-3 and have a question about rebuilding errata srpms from redhat. Do all i have to do is run rpmbuild --rebuild filename.src.rpm to rebuild the rpm for use on my centos system? I am talking about the src.rpms that dont have a a filename change for example the rpm file name change for kernels, etc that add c0 to the rpm filename I am assuming that if the src.rpm filename from redhat errata page matches that of the rpm in centos that there were no .spec file changes and that i can run the above command to rebuild the rpm or any other src.rpm and then install the updated rpm on my system.

Hey, I only got a Voodoo Banshee because one was up for auction locally, and I could get it cheap. I also had good results with a cheapie S3 card. I suspect that most any other card might work better than nVIDIA. So if you want to "cut the Gordian knot" and solve the problems fast, F**K nVIDIA, and try any other display card. Rick

Nvidia Driver and CentOS-3

Ok, Well I have narrowed it down to my mother board. It is a Biostar mother board with an NForce2 chipset. I have the Nvidia driver working on my home machine which is and Asus board with an NForce chipset running CentOS-3 and the Nvidia driver works fine. It has to be the NForce2 Chipset that is no good. I have tried updateing bios, Kernel and Xfree. There is just something with this NForce2 Chipset. Well that all the info I have right now. Yes, I tried Fedora, and with my hardware running Fedora, I had the same problem with the NVIDIA display card. I then realized it was some Linux problem and not a CentOS problem. Even if using a Fedoral kernel would work for me, I think this would disconnect me from automatic kernel updates via YUM. I got a brand new Voodoo Banshee card off a local auction for less than $10.00. For that kind of money, I would rather not mix and match from different distributions. Hello several months ago I install WhiteBox Linux on several severs, I was happy, not woriing about upgrading every 1,5 year as when I use RH 4.0, 6.0, 7.3, 9.0 .... And then WhiteBox went black, WBEL updates release slowed down and maintainer wont help form anybody. Just telling "If you want quick updates, build it yourself.". I prefer wasting time for customizations and/or improvements instead of things which can be done once and then shared in comunity. So, I try to change may servers from WhiteBox to CentOS. I get a lot of help form Milan Kerslager which shifted form WBEL to Tao. I just wonder if there are any known issues. On my test server I only install "centos-release" and removed "whitebox-release" and did "yum update" from CentOS repositories. It just works. The question is if I need those : centos-yumcache centos-yumconf especialy centos-yumconf because it contains same cfg file as yum

When I load the latest driver from Nvidia in CentOS-3 the logon screen turn light gray and I can't log in. Has anyone else had this problem? If so what did you do about it. Hi, I want to 'upgrade' from fedora core 1 to centos 3.1, but all of my partitions are reiserfs. The anaconda installer does not give the option to use reiserfs in the disk partitioning portion, is there any way to change this? or should i use a different method to upgrade? Tim.

I'm getting ready to upgrade to Centos-3.1, but I have a database application that is having difficulty. It needs the libstdc++ libraries. When I run it, it generates the following message: error while loading shared libraries: libstdc++-libc6.1-1.so.2: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory Well, this error doesn't look so bad, as long as I can run Yum on it and get the libraries. Unfortunately, the Yum install fails with a bad GPG key. I've done this Yum install on Centos-2 (for the same library), so I'm not sure why I'm seeing a failure. yum was unable to find and install netatalk, so i used RH9 package. It successfully installed, but didn't started. Dmesg showed me that some module is missing. I pressume I will need to compile new kernel, right ? Best Regards Kuba

Greetings. I have just successfully updated a RH-9 file server to CentOS-3.1. I'm VERY impressed. I have a client who has 4 Redhat servers (1 x 7.3 and 3 x 9.0) that I would like to migrate to CentOS-3.1. Question: My client is willing to send a donation for these boxes but they just want to send you (caosity.org) a check that will cover the next couple of years. Who do we make the check out to? Where do we send the check? And if a bulk donation via check is OK, then please publish the payee information on the website. Another suggestion... Under the "Contribute to the CaOS Foundation", I think it might be useful to specifically list the current help or tasks wanted/needed for the foundation. Hi All, I know you can migrate from RH9 to CentOS but what I was wondering was if anyone has migrated from Fedora core 1 to Centos. If not, I'll moving everything, email, apache, samba, etc.. to a new CentOS machine and do a fresh install of CentOS on the current Fedora Core 1 machine. Greetings, I've got 4 Redhat-9 servers in a production environment and I don't feel like moving to RHEL. So I'm testing CentOS-3.1 now. So far so good. I'd like to get these servers moved over in the next month or so to a better "supported" OS. Are there any issues I should be aware of in upgrades these RH-9 boxes? Should I be able to just stick in the Centos-3.1 CDROM and choose upgrade? Thanks, Michael

NIC detection by anaconda

Hello all, I'm not able to install CentOS in a motherboard with a onboard 3Com gigabit nic (3c904/Syskonnect). Although there's a device driver for the Syskonnect (sk98lin) in the linux kernel, the installation program is asking for this interface module. I tried to create a device disk, but without success. Maybe I'm missing some information about the modules detection by the installation. How could I check the modules in the iso image ? or how could I insert a new module in the iso image ? kernel panic

dear sir; i am using centos 3.1 on a test server . i install oracle 10g and it works fine . but after installing a patch for oracle i have the following error : error while loading shared library /etc/libwait.so can't open shared file and after rebooting i have the same error plus " kernel panic " so is there any thing that i can do to get my system working ? and from where can i get the aproperate oracle patchs for centos ? thanks in advance . khaled

Upgrade install using CentOS-3.1 ISO images

Cutting straight to the chase: When, if ever, does the installer offer an option to upgrade an existing installation, rather than wanting to reformat the disks? More details than you may want: I recently acquired a new PC chassis, with no operating system but with a Serial-ATA disk (which I was not expecting when I ordered it). I set the BIOS for legacy IDE mode and installed RedHat 9, then attempted to upgrade the kernel to add SATA support, without much luck. Searching for the SATA driver modules I found CentOS and decided to try it. I downloaded the three ISO images to another PC, burned CDs, and set about to upgrade my RH9. However, the installer never offered me the option of upgrading (keeping my existing filesystems) -- no matter what steps I tried using when starting the installer, by the time it got to the page for disk partitioning it always wanted to start from scratch and blow the existing partitions away. I finally concluded that I hadn't put anything important on the disks during my struggle with RH9, so I went ahead with the clean install. Everything is working nicely at this point, so thanks for that. However, there are some other RH9 systems around the office that may need to be upgraded at some point, and they definitely can't be wiped clean in the process. Is there a way to upgrade from RH9 to CentOS? Any remarks about upgrading from even older RedHat releases?

3.1 on ASUS SK8V SATA problem

This is my first post to this mailing list, although I have been reading it for a while. Please forgive the length of my message. Also, great work! I'm trying to get Centos-3 running on an ASUS SK8V Opteron motherboard in a way that is useful for me. I've had some success, but now I'm stuck on a problem with the SATA driver. Okay, so I got it up on the network by replacing sk98lin with the one from 2.4.26. While I'm pretty confident that's not a supported thing to do, the machine is pretty useless to me off the network. I know I could throw a supported adapter in it, but it works as is. By the way, my intention is to get a native amd64 distribution of Linux running and my preference is that it be a RedHat derivative. I am not able to tell from the cAos web site whether there are any plans to release an amd64 version of Centos. The only reference I see to that platform is in the FAQ and looks specific to cAos. There are amd64 sources on RedHat's web site for rhel3. My experience of Centos so far is of it being i386 centric. So, the problem I hit. I installed Centos-3 using the iso images onto a couple of SCSI drives I have in the system, then got the 2.4.21-15 kernel update and enabled SATA support. Through a series of modprobes, I got it to recognize the drive. However, it didn't find a valid partition table, and the geometry is way off. My SATA disk is a WD740GD, a 74GB drive. Fdisk thinks it is 30MB, 255 heads, 63 sector/track, 3 cylinders. Have I done something wrong, or is the VIA SATA support in this kernel just not gonna hack it? The SK8V uses the VIA VT8237 southbridge chipset if anyone knows about this. Thanks for any help. -- C. Linus Hicks <lhicks(a)nc.rr.com>

I'm pretty sure that I'm not asking the question correctly, but I'd like to host a database that is supported with RedHat Enterprise Linux 2.1 with Update 2 (Q2 2003), so I'm assuming CentOS-2 fills the bill. However, when I run this application, I get some weird CPU cycling that I can't trace to any specific task. So, perhaps my install is not as current as I think it is. Hello, I have problems removing older kernels from my Centos machines using yum. Can somebody tell me how to remove specific versions ? After doing the updates, my yum and my up2date both tell me the system is totally updated, and it is ... however, my rhn-applet says there are 781 updates ... and it lists as updates packages with exactly the same version ... and even some packages with older versions. CentOS 3.1 update2 packages released

The CentOS 3.1 update2 packages have now been released. They are available on mirror.centos.org and should be on all mirrors within a few hours. To update just run 'yum update' Please bugzilla any problems. There was a problem with the pam build in testing not being linked against the laus library, so the released version is a .c0 so that anyone who has installed the testing version will get the real one on updating. The only package that is missing from these updates is rhgb - that needs some artwork and testing and will be done in the next couple of days. CentOS-3.1 update2

Unless anyone shouts I intend to push all the update2/testing stuff into updates for 3.1 later on today - say about 22:00 UTC All the security related updates have already been released. I am not convinced that lack of feedback means that there are no problems, more likely it means that not many people have tested the stuff, but I have had no serious problems and cant do any more testing. The only problem I did see was that the CentOS gpg key had to be re-imported after the update, I assume due to the rpm upgrade. If anyone wants a chance to test the CentOS-3.1 update2 stuff then please shout and I will hold back the release. To test it just uncomment the [testing] repo in yum.conf (but not the gpgcheck line). mirror.caosity.org is going to become a cluster of 3 servers - using round-robin dns. all uploads need to be done in future to master.caosity.org which will be the new mirror master - the others will sync off of that one. New CentOS contrib packages and 3rd party repos

A number of new packages are now in the contrib repository including cluster manager, courier-imap, maildrop and piranha - amongst others - thanks to bilbo for these. (we are still waiting for some of the src.rpms) There are also kernels for i586 in the contrib section. contrib packages are supplied by third parties, not (necessarily) tested by CentOS developers and not GPG signed by Centos. contrib is available at http://mirror.centos.org/3.1/contrib and should be on all mirrors. There is also a 3rd party yum repository for CentOS-3 at http://people.best-off.org/~rhel-devel/centos-3/ with lots of perl nodules amongst other stuff. The link above provides details of how to configure yum.conf to use the repo. Dag Wieers also provides a repository of rpms for Rhel3 that will (mostly) work with CentOS - http://dag.wieers.com/home-made/ If you do come across any there that dont work properly then please let either Dag or us know. You can add Dag's repository to your yum.conf by adding :- [dag] name=Dag RPM Repository for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3 baseurl=http://apt.sw.be/redhat/el3/en/$basearch/dag We welcome 3rd party repositories as being a good way of finding additional software for CentOS, however the CentOS developers do not test the packages and cannot provide support for them. There is an update to ipsec-tools for CentOS 3.1 https://rhn.redhat.com/errata/RHSA-2004-165.html refers. Updated files are :- updates/i386/RPMS/ipsec-tools-0.2.5-0.4.i386.rpm updates/i386/SRPMS/ipsec-tools-0.2.5-0.4.src.rpm which is also dependant on :- updates/i386/RPMS/initscripts-7.31.13.EL-1.centos.1.i386.rpm updates/i386/SRPMS/initscripts-7.31.13.EL-1.centos.1.src.rpm These are available at http://mirror.centos.org/3.1/ and should be on all mirrors within a few hours. I used mc-4.6.0-9.i386.rpm and it worked fine, but I wanted to know why rpm --rebuild didn't work. As for Tom's advice I don't have /etc/popt . I've tried to install midnight commander on centos3.1 final. No luck in installing it via yum install. When I download src.rpm from centos2 updates SRPMS I couldn't rebuild it. RPM --rebuild mc*.src.rpm didn't work (no rebuild option). What can I do then ? Best Regards Cooba

Samba + CUPS error

Hello. I've been trying to set CentOS 3.1 as a print server for PC running NT4 using Samba + CUPS. I've successfully done this with Fedora Core 1 but have encountered the following error after running cupsaddsmb in CentOS 3.1: WERR_INVALID_PRINTER_NAME. This error also occurs with FC1, but is solved by restarting the smb service i.e. service smb restart. Run cupsaddsmb again after restarting smb and, cupsaddsmb will succeed. However, restarting the smb service does not solve the problem with CentOS 3.1. Here's the relevant excerpt of my /etc/samba/smb.conf file (which works in FC1): [global] # workgroup = NT-Domain-Name or Workgroup-Name workgroup = SOMEGROUP # server string is the equivalent of the NT Description field server string = Samba Server # This option is important for security. It allows you to restrict # connections to machines which are on your local network. The # following example restricts access to two C class networks and # the "loopback" interface. OpenOffice.org with Java Enabled

I am currently building the latest SRPM of openoffice.org with java enabled (using Sun Java SDK version j2dk1.4.2_04-b05). If it builds, is anyone else interested in having the binary and source RPMS? If there is an interest, maybe we can get it into the contrib section of the CentOS mirrors. After it builds, I can verify the requirements ... but I think the only extra thing required will be the latest Sun Java Runtime Environment (at least j2re1.4.2_04) installed. Thanks Johnny Hughes

All, There is a bug in OpenOffice.org in version openoffice.org-1.1.0-15.EL where the help file doesn't open if you select help. Here is the bug and the fix: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=122263 Basically, edit the file /usr/bin/ooffice and find <value>'$lang'</value> then replace it with <value>$lang</value>. I have tested this on both CentOS and WhiteBox Enterprise Linux and the fix works. This error has been corrected in FedoraCore with version openoffice.org-1.1.0-16. Supposedly to be released soon for RHEL...but if you can't wait, fix it now. -Johnny Hughes

Hi All: My name is Peter J. Mignone and I have a little Linux experience. From what I have read about CentOS, it appears very interesting so I am trying it out. I get a header.info error when I tried yum which I have never used. How do you set up yum? Where do you point it, etc.? If my understanding is correct about the licensing, I should turn off anything pertaining to the Red Hat Network. Is there anything else that should be removed? Is there any restrictions on rpm for Red Hat enterprise. In other words, If I find a rpm on say rpmfind.net for red hat could it be used? Thank You! -- Pete

Hi, I am deciding on what 'RHEL clone' to use and prefer to use one that has a quick release after RedHat releases an update. I checked the repositories, but have not encountered any of the latest errata. Am I looking at the wrong place ? Thanks, Taco

Same behavior here with our mini-ITX/EDEN system. The install tool unceremoniously exits stating that the system is not supported.
