ACPI ERROR

Hi list, I've installed C7 1511 (kernel 3.10.x) on a skylake mother board with i3-6100. I know about skylake problems. For the iGPU I've used i915.preliminary_support and ok. Some days ago, I get different strange error on this machine. When screensaver starts or when monitor will be in energy saving, if I try to get access to the system I get different strange behaviour and can't use my machine. To solve this, I've disabled monitor power saving from kde. Yesterday, I've powered off this machine through an ssh session an system won't shut down and get error like "shutdown was delayed for 120 seconds..." but I can't supply information about this last problem. long delay when logging in

I have a CentOS 7 system and when I login with putty or ssh there is a long delay before I get the password prompt. Need help getting two NICs to work on CentOS 7

Hello all Here is the scenario: We have a mail server VM which currently has two virtual NICs attached to it. One NIC is has an IP on a subnet with a default gateway defined and the other NIC has an IP on a different subnet with a different gateway on a different VLAN defined. Now when I activate both NICs, and run an ifconfig -a, I see that both IP addresses are showing. Now here is the problem. When I ping the VM, the first NIC's IP is not pingable at all, but the second NIC's IP is pingable. How do I configure the networking so that both IPs are pingable and the VM is reachable via both IPs? Please let me know what I may be doing wrong! Thank you! Sean

Hello, Can someone explain why a static library would make calls to dlopen? openssl-static-1.0.1e-48.el6_8.3.x86_64 /usr/lib64/libcrypto.a In trying to staticly link against the above I get /usr/lib64/libcrypto.a(fips.o): In function `verify_checksums': (.text+0x62b): undefined reference to `dlopen' It didn't use to do this. [offtopic] JavaScript and ServiceWorkers in FireFox

This is a bit off-topic but the question exists due to the FireFox in CentOS 7. Few websites I have visited (e.g. LiveScience.com) the browser asks me if it can give me notifications. I always say no because of bad experiencies with notifications on Android where notification spam is the largest reason why I dislike the Android operating system (screwed up update system is the second reason, I'm a tree hugging save the planet hippie so I don't buy a new phone every two weeks but instead wait until mine breaks, so its often weeks or months before I actually get updates that exist) Anyway I have never allowed a website to send me notifications but I now have use to make notifications available to users on one of my sites if they opt in. Looking into how they are done, it seems to involve serviceWorkers which I have heard about but never used myself. Going through a simple tutorial I created this function: function registerWorker() { "use strict"; if ('serviceWorker' in navigator) { window.alert('Hello World'); } else { window.alert('no joy'); } } obviously not finished as it doesn't register anything, but it kept telling me "no joy" in CentOS FireFox. After a little research I found that FireFox 45 ESR has serviceWorkers but they are disabled by default. I had to go to about:config and find the line dom.serviceWorkers.enabled and change it from False to True But then it dawned on me, if they are not enabled, then how are other sites asking me if I want to allow notifications from the site? Are they asking me before they have detected whether or not my browser supports it, or is there a different mechanism for notifications that doesn't involve Service Workers? Does anybody know? -=- Basically my use is an audio site, there's not much reason to visit the site if the user has all the audios they are interested in, and we don't do e-mail notifications for privacy reasons. Would like to be able to notify users who opt-in that new audios are available from performers they are interested in if they opt-in to notifications *without* needing their e-mail address. It looks like serviceWorkers are needed for that, but it puzzles me that other sites (more than just liveScience) have offered me notifications when the FireFox in CentOS by default has the API disabled, so I'm wondering if there is a different API I just do not know about?

httpd-filesystem in 7.3 ??

Does anyone know if the Apache httpd in CentOS 7.3 rebase is going to use the httpd-filesystem that Fedora is now using? I understand it has some advantages to some people with how PHP is run. I'm not advocating for it I just would like to know as I maintain a LibreSSL LAMP stack and need to know if I need to look at the Fedora packaging to update my own packaging so I can remain as close to 7.3 style as reasonably possible.

How do I default to "Folder View" in my custom KDE user profile?

Hi, I'm currently busy tweaking KDE 4.14 on CentOS 7 to my needs. I want to use it as a base for an enterprise class desktop. In my humble opinion, CentOS' default KDE configuration is not very usable, so I created a default user profile that looks more like what openSUSE looked like a few years back. Here's the little script I'm using to install the various configuration files and stubs in the relevant places: https://github.com/kikinovak/centos/blob/master/el7/scripts/05-installer-pr… And here are the files that are harmed during the process: :) https://github.com/kikinovak/centos/tree/master/el7/kde What I did basically was to modify the panel's size, add a handful of default application launchers to the panel and to the kickoff menu, define Firefox and Thunderbird as default applications, default to double-click instead of single-click, define a set of defaults for the window manager, tweak a few things for Dolphin and Konsole, and add a nice custom wallpaper. The result is a sober-looking KDE desktop fit for use in a production environment. One thing I can't seem to define is a default "folder view" for the desktop. Instead of the plasmoids on the desktop introduced with KDE4, I'd like my environment to behave like a "classic" desktop with folders and files on the desktop, and where a right click can - for example - create a folder. My KDE is in french, but if I remember correctly, this setup is called "Folder View" in english. Question: how can I define this behavior as default? Which file or stub do I have to put in /etc/skel so a newly created user's KDE defaults to "Folder View"? clamd@amavisd fails under systemd

Trying to set up a mail server under CentOS7 - having done this with CentOS5 and CentOS6 over the last decade with no issues and reliable service, it was time to upgrade (?) to CentOS7. Shouldn't be a problem, right? Getting to grips with systemd has been challenging - to say the least. So a brief overview of what I am trying to set up: postfix / amavisd-new / spamassassin / clamav so we can receive mail and deal with the major rubbish that gets thrown at any open port 25 smtp service. no problems installing each of the above and their configuration files. Just as an aside, there are many recipes for this combo of packages - none of which work as advertised. I can run the clamd service manually just fine and everything works - i.e. /usr/sbin/clamd -c /etc/clamd.d/amavisd.conf –nofork=yes returns a functioning service - thus my config files must be okay but try it with systemd and you hit a brick wall - nothing in any logs to give me a clue why it comes up and then closes down After many days of google chasing, I have found a number of folk hitting the same issue, yet none of these have posted anything resembling a solution, most have had other issues that were in error. If there is anyone that has this combo of services working under CentOS7 and can shed any insight on why I cannot get this service to actually run, it would be very much appreciated. TIA Rob

This is an epel package but I thought that I would ask here first. Trouble setting up HP Officejet Pro 8600 printer on CentOS 7 + KDE

Hi, I just installed a CentOS 7 + KDE desktop in my office's network. So far, I'm quite happy with the results, though I have some trouble getting the printer to work. All the other machines in my office (server, desktops, workstation) are running Slackware64 14.1 or 14.2, and they can all use the printer perfectly. I installed hplip-gui and ran it. The printer is a network printer, it has a static IP in the network and can also be addressed by its hostname. [kikinovak@alphamule:~] $ host hp-officejet hp-officejet.microlinux.lan has address 192.168.2.252 When I run hp-setup with the default options, the setup program "sees" the printer, but informs me that there is a "communication problem". I figure this is because the default seach method is mDNS/Bonjour. I tried again with the SLP option, and this time the setup procedure went OK. Or it seemed so, as the test page was blank. Now what? A few details about my system: SELinux, IPv6 and firewall are disabled. CUPS is running OK. I checked on the HP website that this printer requires HPLIP 3.11.10 or greater, which seems OK, since the HPLIP version shipping with CentOS is 3.13.something. Relocation of logfiles in logwatch

Hi, I try to teach logwatch that some of my logfiles are relocated. E.g., mail mailog now lives in mail/info and secure has moved too auth/info. I adjusted /etc/logwatch/conf/logfiles/SERVICE.conf accordingly but logwatch does not understand. What is the right way to adapt logwatch to the new reality? I believe that the issue is that yahoo updated their dmarc record a bit ago, so now won't accept mail, from 3rd-parties, that has an @yahoo... "mailfrom", as yours do on this list. If the non-@yahoo mailing sender doesn't do what's necessary to deal with enforced dmarc, and your mail provider enforces dmarc, you won't see messages from @yahoo correspondents -- which is likely why you aren't seeing your own list messages. Additionally if a mailing list has enough @yahoo posters, this can generate sufficient bounces to get you kicked off the mailing list on a regular basis. There are various ways for mailers/mailing lists to deal with the enforced dmarc. My understanding is that with Mailman, which this list uses, one has to upgrade to -3. Lost Wifi device after update/reboot

After updating and rebooting my laptop, I seem to have lost my wifi device. Since it still is physically intact (everything works when I boot a live system from USB) I have the suspicion that something went wrong on the CentOS side. Also, ,my password prompt after booting (system is encrypted) now appears to see an US keyboard layout, instead of the German layout it should have, so it seems like there is indeed something wrong/changed with my system. Apparently there used to be some issues with older versions where the system simply forgot the "NetworkManager-wifi " package, but according to "rpm -q" I still have that. "rfkill list" does not list my wifi card, whereas "lspci | grep Network" seems OK: "04:00.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation Wireless 7265 (rev 59)" So, is it "simply" an issue with with CentOS, or did I do something wrong without realizing it?

hi everyone any experience with ctdb? I'm setting up a simple cluster, only ldap backend instead of tdb2. One (of the two) server fails this way: 50.samba: ERROR: smb.conf cache create failed $ ctdb status Number of nodes:2 pnn:0 10.5.6.32 OK pnn:1 10.5.6.49 UNHEALTHY (THIS NODE) Generation:323266562 Size:2 hash:0 lmaster:0 hash:1 lmaster:1 Recovery mode:NORMAL (0) Recovery master:0 If I copy the file manually while ctdb is running I see: 50.samba: WARNING: smb.conf cache update failed - using old cache file Node became HEALTHY. How to start a script to complete configuration

Hi, We have a virtual environment based on XenServer. In this environment I defined a template for CentOS 7 servers. I would like to start a script a boot time to complete the configuration of new VMs based on this template. Hi, IT seems, centos6.3 does no longer get any updates esp security fixes as per readme here: http://mirror.centos.org/centos/6.3/readme Is there updated source RPMs that can be rebuilt and hand patched, for example, nss-util 3.21.0-2 or openssl 1.0.1e that can be safely used on CentOS 6.3? Any other options that you can shed some light on, highly appreciated for above examples. My apologies if this is not the right group to post such questions or if any existing literature available for same, please kindly refer to right place. The other option is to use CentOS 6.8 updated package on 6.3, but I am not sure of any upstream and downstream dependencies in 6.3 without updating the rest of the userland from 6.3 to 6.8. Proxy server settings

Hello All, I'm sure this must be a fairly quick and easy configuration, but I have not been able to figure it out yet. How do you configure the proxy settings in the OS itself (not in a browser or other application) so that anytime the server tries to get out to the internet, that it can direct its traffic to go through a proxy server? I tried putting the proxy settings in .bash_profile per a tech article I found online but that did not work. The OS is Redhat 7.2. Thanks, Paul Greene

FireFox and Plugins

While doing a browser fingerprinting survey, I was quite surprised to see I actually have a FireFox plugin installed. The culprit is /usr/lib64/mozilla/plugins/librhythmbox-itms-detection-plugin.so It appears that whoever maintains the rhythmbox RPM has chosen not to package the browser plugin separately like it probably should be. So if I have the rhythmbox RPM installed, I have the plugin. This is rather worrisome because I can find no trace of the plugin in the Mozilla preferences panel, so if it is there it is very well hidden and if it really isn't there, it can't be disabled there. Is there some kind of blacklist file I can put in /usr/lib64/mozilla/plugins/ or ~/.mozilla/plugins/ to specifically tell FireFox not to load that plugin, or do I have to uninstall rhythmbox? Thank you for suggestions. PS does anyone actually have a real world use for an itms detection plugin?

RHEL 7.3 released

As a heads up RHEL 7.3 is released: https://access.redhat.com/documentation/en-US/Red_Hat_Enterprise_Linux/7/ht… Pay careful attention when the CR repo starts churning out RPMs (if you have CR enabled) as there have been a few rebases in this - notably firewalld, NetworkManager, freeIPA, libreoffice, samba, amongst others If you have an ipv6 environment ping is now ipv6 aware and ping6 is removed (with a symlink to ping for compatibility). On the SSL side of things pycurl now handles TLS 1.1 and 1.2 and openJDK8 can handle ECC. With the NetworkManager rebase more complicated arbitrary layering of interfaces is possible (eg physical -> team -> vlan -> bridge), which I'll be revisiting my old NM article to investigate soon, and Wi-Fi scanning will use a randomised MAC ... this may affect some people. For a known BSSID the connect won't be a randomised MAC though just when scanning. The firewalld zones become a bit more usable with ipsets being usable to define the zone making management of which networks go in which zones a bit nicer - I'll be revisiting my old firewalld article to investigate this too. The deprecation of the old net-tools suite continues with bridge-utils no longer required in many circumstances as iproute2 gets improved bridge capabilties... this brings EL7 inline with the Fedora behaviour: https://fedoramagazine.org/build-network-bridge-fedora/ On the network side of things be aware of a potentially breaking change to systems in how device names are created, this will only affect systems that have exceptionally long device names: https://access.redhat.com/documentation/en-US/Red_Hat_Enterprise_Linux/7/ht… For fresh installs using automatic partitioning the default /boot size has been bumped to 1G ... for kickstarts and other automated installs you may want to tweak your setups to match. The NSS bug that caused problems with reusing SSL sessions and was breaking owncloud setups has been resolved - I have not tested this yet and will be doing so this weekend. The impending owncloud 9.1.1 EL7 release in EPEL7 will be removing my workaround and require this for full correct functionality. In the tech preview world nftables joins the testing group (I'll have articles up exploring this new firewalling method in the coming weeks) for networking. Whilst with storage overlayfs and btrfs remain in tech preview status - with cephfs joining them... as notable pieces. There's also new pNFS stuff. This is only a small snippet of things that jumped out relevant to me personally. As always make sure you read through the release notes in full. to be ready once CentOS starts producing the RPMs, and keep in mind this early in the lifecycle there are a fair few rebases and new features implemented that should be tested... unlike later on in the lifecycles (eg EL6) where no/minimal rebasing happens and changes at a feature level don't happen.

Hello, I did the following: in /boot/grub/menu.lst I added/replaced KEYTABLE=us-acentos in /etc/sysconfig/keyboard I have this: KEYTABLE="us-acentos" MODEL="pc105" LAYOUT="us" KEYBOARDTYPE="pc" VARIANT="intl" my host system is Windows; and for connecting to Linux terminal I use PuTTY in Windows I have configured German keyboard layout; what would someone expect, when using PuTTY to connect to the above configured CentOS 6 I thought that there I have the US intl layout; but its German; when I switch the keyboard layout in Windows to US intl. and connect to a CentOS 6, where the following is configured in /boot/grub/menu.lst KEYTABLE=de-latin1-nodeadkeys and in /etc/sysconfig/keyboard this: KEYTABLE="de-latin1-nodeadkeys" MODEL="pc105" LAYOUT="de" KEYBOARDTYPE="pc" VARIANT="nodeadkeys" here I thought I have German keyboard layout, but it isn't; it's US in short: why do I have the keyboard layout, which is configured at the host running PuTTY and not which is configured in CentOS? when I log into the Linux directly at the console, I do have the configured keyboard layout; Thanks, Walter

dnf and failing epel

hi everyone, I use dnf but one epel fails in a peculiar way: $ dnf repolist Failed to open: /var/cache/dnf/x86_64/7/x86_64/7/epel/repodata/8415cbb16f52517f34e3edac12a97c9893117f7b9de6cb22fc086048febd1c60-updateinfo.xml.bz2. that file is there, so I tampered with perms & fcontext but to no avail. dnf clean does remove it but on the first contact to epel repo it fails again. Do you see it with your centoses? ps. I wonder if my email get though to the group, I receive mailing list emails but I don't get my own emails? b.w. L

They are both business "ultrabooks" with a 1600x1080 display option, nice keyboards (not "chicklet" style), a trackpoint and trackpad and RJ-45 builtin. I bought a Dell Latitude E7470 over the Lenovo for several reasons. Otherwise, suspend and everything else worked near as I can tell which is actually pretty impressive for a brand new machine. So, I am doing other things while this new E7470 ages like a fine wine. Or maybe I'll loose patience and just install Fedora and try a "vanilla" kernel package. Then maybe after a year or two CentOS 8 or whatever will run on it and then I can just run steady for 4+ years without getting pummeled by stupid updates and feature creep that you get with Fedora and Ubuntu or whatever the latest hot distro is. The E7470 is obviously a laptop of choice for business people. And that is the type of machine developers use. So chances of good compatibility are very high. You just have to give it time. I was watching Daredevil season 1 and they use Latitudes that look exactly like mine. And that was probably filmed in 2014. So the form factor at least has been around for a while which is good. Unfortunately I can't say the same thing about the show. Mike

I just built these servers, and the other admin added some more packages, then we moved them into the datacenter. I see errors from a cron job, Could not get metalink https://mirrors.fedoraproject.org/metalink?repo=epel-7&arch=x86_64 error was 14: curl#6 - "Could not resolve host: mirrors.fedoraproject.org; Unknown error" So I logged on, and ran yum list apcupsd, to see if it was having issues getting epel, and got: Cannot find a valid baseurl for repo: base/7/x86_64 Clues for the poor? mark

fprintd needed?

On a 7.2 desktop system I see irregular attempts to start the fingerprint authentication daemon "fprintd". One of the messages is "D-Bus service launched with name: net.reactivated.Fprint" This fails as there is no fingerprint device. fprintd.service is disabled. Centos 7 Minimal and Quotas

I have installed Centos 7 Minimal in a 1TB KVM. Used XFS file system. I did not use LVM. I need to install Directadmin which requires quotas. I have this in fstab: UUID=b482396d-d2fc-49ed-b9df-c49e9387405b / xfs defaults 0 0 UUID=e24a16e0-57ab-42b2-af0b-9edf789376e5 /boot xfs defaults 0 0 UUID=b08b8243-6b46-444c-a7bd-02934246d884 swap swap defaults 0 0 I get this: # repquota / repquota: Mountpoint (or device) / not found or has no quota enabled. repquota: Not all specified mountpoints are using quota. I tried changing / from defaults to defaults,usrquota,grpquota in fstab and rebooting but I still get the same result. What do I need to do here?

Disable calendar notification in GNOME / CentOS 7 ?

Hi, Here's one of the problems adressed in a previous thread, but it got somehow swept away in the heat of the discussion. Since I'm using Thunderbird and not Evolution, I'd like to get rid of the calendar notifications in GNOME's system menu. Ideally, things should work like this: https://extensions.gnome.org/static/extension-data/screenshots/screenshot_1… There's an extension called "Nothing To Do" which is supposed to do exactly that, e. g. get rid of the calendar notifications: https://extensions.gnome.org/extension/153/nothingtodo/ Unfortunately there seems to be no way to use it with the GNOME version shipping with CentOS. I spent a couple hours jumping through various burning loops, without success. Any idea how this could be done? Thunderbird vs. Evolution vs. OwnCloud

Hi, I'm currently using Thunderbird synced to OwnCloud on my main workstation running Slackware64 14.1. I just installed CentOS 7 on my Asus S300 laptop. It's running nicely, and I'm spending some time getting acquainted with it. I wonder if I should stick with Thunderbird or go with the default Evolution application, since this seems to be better integrated into the desktop, namely the calendar function. On the other hand, it seems like you have to jump through burning loops to connect Evolution to OwnCloud. What are your experiences with these two clients and OwnCloud? Any suggestions? Some ISP provide one click increamental Email backup and restore through their control panel. And they are providing .pst file format download option for the email account backup. What is broken with fail2ban

Hello List, with CentOS 7.2 it is not longer possible to run fail2ban on a Server ? I install a new CentOS 7.2 and the EPEL directory yum install fail2ban I don't change anything only I create a jail.local to enable the Filters [sshd] enabled = true .... ..... Power Cut

Dear All I am using a centos server for cdr billing and mediation device on a remote network. I am experiencing problem that I am suspicious it comes from main supply power cut at the remote site. The power supply to the remote site comes from battery charger that will be automatically switched in circuit under main supply power cut but cannot provide adequate power for more than 2 hours . I am suspicious that the remote system is suffering from many frequent main supply power cut . Can you please do me favor and let me know if there is any log on my centos server that I can check to see if there would be many frequent power cut there ? Thank you for your time

NetworkManager icon not showing

Hi, I just installed CentOS 7 on my Asus S300 laptop. Wireless was working OK at first, but now for mysterious reasons the NetworkManager icon seems to have disappeared from the notification area. When I click on that area, there's only information showing about sound, brightness, battery status and the connected user. Which leaves me clueless. Any suggestions? How to block routing/forwarding with firewalld

On CentOS 7 with firewalld I have a box with numerous interfaces acting as a NAT gateway. This works but I noticed that it routes/forwards traffic not just from my internal zone to external zone but also between interfaces within the internal zone. How can I prevent that traffic? I've tried adding direct and rich rules to deny the traffic but it doesn't work. Direct: firewall-cmd --direct --add-rule ipv4 filter INPUT 0 -s 10.110.4.0/22 -d 10.110.0.0/22 -j REJECT That command works, and I see it in `iptables -L` but traffic is still allowed. Rich: # firewall-cmd --zone=trusted --add-rich-rule='rule family=ipv4 source address=10.110.4.0/22 destination address=10.110.0.0/22 reject' Error: INVALID_RULE: destination action I can't find any explanation of what that error means. Hi folks, I've found a number of articles on setting up a Linux / CUPS / Avahi server to allow airprinting, but they all seem to be quite old. Two questions: 1) Does anyone have a link for a more recent article, hopefully specifically for Centos7. 2) I'm on a structured, VLAN network. Will I have to put a WIFI card into my Centos server to give it a presence on the WIFI before this will work? Gary

Cannot boot CentOS 7 VM after updating Host CentOS 7 Kernel

I have something very strange that occurred. After updating the kernel on my host CentOS 7 Dell 2950iii I have found that one of my CentOS 7 guest VMs will no longer boot... it just stops at the grub prompt (a second VM functions just fine). I have no idea why this problem occurred and have been unable to fix it. On google I have found several suggestions as to how to repair grub but so far none have worked. Squid question

I'm having issues getting squid to send traffic through a specific upstream gateway. I need for a MS WSUS server and a Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager to get through a squid proxy to get out to Microsoft and Symantec respectively to get MS patches and Symantec DAT files. The traffic needs to go through the squid proxy, through a firewall, and through an upstream McAfee gateway server. If it tries to take a path different than that upstream gateway to get out to the internet, it'll get dropped. However, once the traffic goes through the proxy, it tries to go directly to the vendor website and not go through the McAfee gateway, and therefore is getting blocked by the firewall. The traffic never reaches the McAfee gateway. If I configure a browser to use the proxy server and browse to some websites, it can get to http sites, but not https sites. Port 443 is what isn't getting through. I thought this line in squid.conf was supposed to send the traffic to an upstream cache_peer parent gateway, but I could easily be misunderstanding what its supposed to do. (I'm pretty new with squid) cache_peer <upstream gateway IP address> parent 8080 3130 proxy-only no-query no-netdb-exchange default login=<username>:<password> The Safe_ports and SSL_ports is the squid.conf default settings, and include both port 443 and port 80 traffic Thanks, PG

NFS help

We have 1 system ruining Centos7 that is the NFS server. There are 50 external machines that FTP files to this server fairly continuously. We have another system running Centos6 that mounts the partition the files are FTP-ed to using NFS. There is a python script running on the NFS client machine that is reading these files and moving them to a new dir on the same file system (a mv not a cp). Almost daily this script hangs while reading a file - sometimes it never comes back and cannot be killed, even with -9. Other times it hangs for 1/2 hour then proceeds on. Coinciding with the hanging I see this message on the NFS server host: nfsd: peername failed (error 107) And on the NFS client host I see this: nfs: V4 server returned a bad sequence-id nfs state manager - check lease failed on NFSv4 server with error 5 The first client message is always at the same time as the hanging starts. The second client message comes 20 minutes later. The server message comes 4 minutes after that. Then 3 minutes later the script un-hangs (if it's going to). Can anyone shed any light on to what could be happening here and/or what I could do to alleviate these issues and stop the script from hanging? Perhaps some NFS config settings? We do not have any, so we are using the defaults. Thanks!

[OT] How to recover data from an IDE drive

Hello, As some may recall, I suffered a hardware failure of a 10 yr old IBM Netvista back in January. I was backing up my personal data, 'My Documents', to my CentOS server but I apparently didn't get my emails. It was a main board failure and I believe the data is still good on the hard drive. Only problem, its an IDE drive and my server and new PC have SATA drives. Is it possible to install the old drive as a secondary drive into a newer PC with SATA drives? If so, how do I do this? I need to access the emails. This was a Windows XP machine using Outlook as the mail client. TIA!!!!!!

python script from crontab - problems with proper execution

Hi All. I currently have a problem with proper invocation of a python script with cron. non-root $ crontab -l #Ansible: script_repo_scanner 55 11 * * * /usr/bin/python /path/script_repo_scanner.py --bb_user bb_user --bb_pass bb_pass --bd_log_dir /path/logs &> /path/script_repo_scanner.py.log And in /var/log/cron I see that cron executed the script but there is no log output in /path/script_repo_scanner.py.log and the script did not perform his job. So it looks like it has not been run despite entries in /var/log/cron ;) When I execute the command non-root$ /usr/bin/python /path/script_repo_scanner.py --bb_user bb_user --bb_pass bb_pass --bd_log_dir /path/logs &> /path/script_repo_scanner.py.log I get standard output (script logs to stdout) and script does its job. Hi, folks, Trying to build a package from a gzipped tarball of a python package. I'm trying to build it in /root/rpmbuild. Python has a way to build it, but it creates its own tree, with a clone of the rpmbuild tree under *that*. So, from the specfile, I'm trying to understand, after much googling, what I need to change the Source and BuildRoot to. My latest try for the latter is BuildRoot: %{_builddir}/BUILD/%{name}-%{version}-%{release} For Source0, I want to use the file in SOURCES. Anyone got a better example than what I've been googling? mark

Ordering rich rules with firewalld

Is there any way to order rich rules in firewalld? If I remove all rules and add them back in firewalld seems to put them in whatever order it feels like. Alternatively, how can I change the default policy of a firewalld zone? "Shortcut" for creating a software RAID 60?

Hello all, Testing stuff virtually over here before taking it to the physical servers. I found a shortcut for creating a software RAID 10 ("--level=10"), device in CentOS 6. Looking at the below, I don't see anything about a shortcut for RAID 60. https://access.redhat.com/documentation/en-US/Red_Hat_Enterprise_Linux/6/htm l/Storage_Administration_Guide/s1-raid-levels.html Is RAID 60 an uncommon RAID-configuration, as compared to RAID 10, and this might be why it's missing? Not too cumbersome to first create two RAID 6-arrays, then add them to a RAID 0, but it does take some extra time. Besides, I haven't found any way to fail a member disk, as is possible to do when using RAID level 10. Hello everyone, I added my user account to a group called "www-pub" for easier manipulations on web files on my server. And today I found that my account was not in the group "www-pub" any longer..... What I did to add my account to the group is like "sudo usermod -a -G www-pub myaccount". Is there anything wrong? A bit of a perennial I'm afraid. My wife has filled up her iPhone 6 with photos, and wants them moved onto my computer. I'm running CentOS 7 patched about 30 minutes ago. Needless to say the computer can't see the data on the iPhone, though it does recognise the phone as an iPhone. VM disk question

I have VMPlayer 12 running a CentOS 7 disk. Works fine. However I wish to change the disk from UUID booting (fstab) to the old style LABEL. Has anyone figured out how to make Firefox 45.4.0 on CentOS 6 use xdgurl to handle xdg:// URLs? Google is full of suggestions that don't work. When I select a an xdg:// link I don't get a dialog asking me what to do like Google says I will. Instead I get a message that says Firefox doesn't have a clue how to handle this URL. Do you want to try again? SSH Weak Ciphers

Hi, In a recent security review some systems I manage were flagged due to supporting "weak" ciphers, specifically the ones listed below. So first question is are people generally modifying the list of ciphers supported by the ssh client and sshd? On CentOS 6 currently it looks like if I remove all the ciphers they are concerned about then I am left with Ciphers aes128-ctr,aes192-ctr,aes256-ctr for both /etc/ssh/sshd_config and /etc/ssh/ssh_config. Is just using these three ciphers like to cause me any problems? Could having so few ciphers be creating a security concern itself? Hi list, another question about bacula, but this time about restoring backups. I've a server that I must backup every day. My plan is: from mon to sat incrimental backup and on sunday full backup. When I will perform a restore I must restore from last valid full backup and then all valid incremental backup from last backup to specific date. This server has aweb managed application where user can update data or delete data. Suppose that after a full backup, on monday the user upload a file and incrimental backup is performed. On tuesday the user remove the uploaded file and backup is performed. Suppose that I want perform a restore of these jobs. I restore full, mon-incr and I found on restore path file uploaded on monday. When restoring tuesday incr (where the uploaded file was not present), on restore path I will found the uploaded file or bacula remove it with tuesday incremental backup restore? Sorry but today I can't try this due to time issue. Thanks in advance.

port running but connection refused

Hi All, I have a process running on port 5070... I'm using CentOS 7. iptables is running firewalld should be stopped and disabled. When I telnet localhost 5070 I get connection refused. When I stop iptables I still get connection refused. netstat -tnlv | grep 5070 tcp 0 0 192.168.1.8:5070 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN so the process is running and listening. ps ax | grep firewalld returns nothing except the grep command. glxinfo problem

Dear Centos Users We are running centos on our HPC. Indeed, we have a problem with running some software using X11 server such as pymol. For your information, we are using cygwin to access to the hpc (using ssh -X -Y username(a)xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx) When we are testing glxinfo on my desktop, it gives us the following error: [username@hpc ~]# glxinfo name of display: localhost:10.0 X Error of failed request: BadValue (integer parameter out of range for operation) Major opcode of failed request: 149 (GLX) Minor opcode of failed request: 3 (X_GLXCreateContext) Value in failed request: 0x0 Serial number of failed request: 20 Current serial number in output stream: 23 The weird thing is that when we use another desktop computer running the same cygwin version and accessing with the same username, glxinfo works fine. Indeed, echo $DISPLAY on my desktop computer gives us localhost:10.0 , while it gives localhost:13.0 on the another desktop. If I set DISPLAY on my desktop to localhost:13.0, it doesn't work One more point, if we run glxinfo on the another desktop using my account and logging at the same time from my desktop with the same username and setting DISPLAY to 13:0, glxinfo works on my desktop. My environment is "heterogeneous" my authentication and home server are currently stuck on a 1G shared network, the production servers and storage servers are on a bonded 40G network, all are in the same VLAN. I have about 100 servers on the 40GB bonded network each with 12cores and 128GB of memory. They are running centos 6.6 Except for my storage servers they are all just running large and small research jobs on a grid engine. Two questions: The errors she seems to spawn is lockd: spurious grace period reject?! lockd: failed to reclaim lock for pid 8225 (errno -37, status 4) lockd: spurious grace period reject?! lockd: failed to reclaim lock for pid 8225 (errno -37, status 4) and at some point, we start getting errors that the file locks are stuck.. you can write and read from the lockfile, but programs that depend on the C construct lock file throw filelock errors until we reboot. Why is dmesg, /var/log/dmesg, and /var/log/messages unique from each other? I thought dmesg was a representation of /var/log/messages/ Is there a way to get a date stamp for the dmesg? if a job failed in the last hour and the message is from yesterday...and I don't know that doesn't help. I think what I am troubleshooting is THAT user who REFUSES to follow direction... and is sending thousands of very large jobs which each might immediately spawn another 10-20 jobs to a grid of 100 servers in a matter of seconds overwhelming either the network or the home directory server or the authentication server... because when she strikes, sometimes users cannot get a response from LDAP or the home server within as much as 10 seconds. Thus she breaks the NFS because it gets hammered and I have to restart all the servers on my grid. Disabling sound chip

01:00.1 Audio device [0403]: NVIDIA Corporation High Definition Audio Controller [10de:0be3] (rev a1) I don't want that seen by the sound software. That's the sound chip on my video card, probably there for the HDMI output. For some reason, that sound device takes preference over my USB headphones and it is really annoying I tried creating /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist with the following : blacklist snd_hda_intel blacklist snd_hda_codec_hdmi That didn't work. Those are not CentOS specific instructions, the only CentOS specific instructions I found are related to nVidia and are rather complex and I don't believe this is that complex - at least it shouldn't be. I'm 99% sure snd_hda_intel is the driver. It shows up as Intel HD Audio in the Mate Sound control panel. I just want it disabled so I don't have to constantly use the control panel. Any hints or suggestions appreciated, not sure why there isn't just a checkbox to disable things like sound devices.

CentOS 7/GNOME 3 customise top panel

Hi, Is there any way to customise the top panel in CentOS 7 with GNOME 3 (which I recently tried for the first time)? Specifically, I want to add "application launchers", as it will make start-up faster than the standard alternatives. (Because you can move the mouse directly to the right place - you don't have to carry out another action, wait for icons or menu items to pop up, look for the right one etc first.) People on the web talk about a "context" menu that opens if you use some kind of weird combination of right mouse-click and Alt, Windows key, Ctrl, left click, Alt Gr or whatever, but there seems to be no way to make that happen on CentOS. I found an answer of sorts in https://www.centos.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=47957 - > In straight Gnome Shell -- CentOS 7 defaults to a modified version > using extensions -- the panel *is* locked. Visit extensions.gnome.org > to see if something there is useful. - but I don't think I quite understand it. I mean, the ability to add extensions is nice, but if the panel is locked, isn't an "unlock" function what I should be looking for? This doesn't quite sound like an "extension". Or is the actual menu everyone talks about itself an extension? If that's the case, surely isn't there some other way to make the changes? If the standard panel allows stuff to be added, there must be a standard way to do it, right? Also, if I do need extensions, I'd prefer to install it via the package manager system rather than through a special web interface... Does anyone know more about this? Any help would be appreciated. - Except, that is, I don't really need anyone to suggest switching to MAME or some other alternative desktop. I might end up doing just that, but it really bugs me that I can't get functionality that's supposed to be there to work... - Toralf

iptables on C5

Hi all, I am trying to get iptables to work for me... I am running asterisk (11.23.0) on a C5 machine. Working fine on port 5060 udp. I have need to tcpenable=yes SIP and run that on port 5068. Since port 5060 is already running I was going to redirect 5068 to 5060. So I thought I could use iptables to do that - but does not seem to be working. 192.168.10.201 is my machine, 192.168.1.3 is the other machine. 1.3 should connect to 10.201 on port 5068. so I did: iptables -t nat -A PREROUTING -p tcp -d 192.168.10.201 --dport 5068 -j REDIRECT --to-port 5060 iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -p tcp -d 192.168.1.3 --dport 5060 -j REDIRECT --to-port 5068 This did not seem to work. iptable -t nat -L -n -v shows packets going out to 1.3 but "0" on the input for 5068. So then I added iptables -t nat -A OUTPUT -p tcp -d 192.168.10.201 --dport 5068 -j REDIRECT --to-port 5060 iptables -t nat -A OUTPUT -p tcp -d 127.0.0.1 --dport 5068 -j REDIRECT --to-port 5060 And still nothing on the input. BeaverDB might be a good fit if you don't mind that it's written in Java. I actually find myself using Valentina Studio these days. It's not open source, but it is free, and it's written in Qt, and is multi-platform. Sound problem, possibly Mate Volume Control

Hi all! In the last day or two (on Centos 7)the speaker icon in the Mate top panel, which normally drops down to a volume control, has stopped working. what does "stopped working" mean? It means when I drop down the volume slider and slide it, it makes no difference at all in the output volume. if I right-click that icon, it'll open up "Sound Preferences", which appears to be the same as "Mate Volume Control". Within that program, the input or output level slider DOES work. I fired up alsactrl and it seems to work fine, and will also control volume. I dont have pavucontrol (or is it pavuctl) installed, so I don't suppose it has gotten messed up. I cannot add user to a group permanently
