Kickstarting CentOS 7 VM on CentOS 6 not possible?

Hi, On CentOS 6.7 (all updates) kickstarting a CentOS 7 VM (in the way it always has worked for other versions, incl. Fedora 22 VM's), does not work for me. I use virt-install with a local copy of the "images/pxeboot" tree. It all stops with: ... [ OK ] Reached target Paths. [ OK ] Reached target Basic System. dracut-initqueue[551]: Warning: Could not boot. dracut-initqueue[551]: Warning: /dev/root does not exist Starting Dracut Emergency Shell... Warning: /dev/root does not exist ... I found zillion references to similar problems, including PXE-related (I do not use PXE, but "-l" with virt-install) and cobbler-related (no Cobbler involved), and I tried some of the suggestions, but none of them worked. Installing CentOS 7 "manually" using virt-install and the netboot ISO works fine, but I want to use kickstart files. Kernel route table is empty

We will do the following, 1) We make the DVD image which include CentOS and our application. 2) Sell DVD to our customer. 3) Customer installs this image (CentOS and our applications) on the Server. Question 1 Is there no problem from the view point of CentOS license? Building for older versions

Hi -- I'm trying to build an application on CentOS 7 which can run on older versions of CentOS. I'm running into problems with versioning of memcpy in Glibc. Executables built on CentOS 7 require memcpy from glibc-2.14, which causes the program not to load on systems with older versions of glibc. My online search suggests to add an asm() with a .symver option to select memcpy from glibc-2.2.5 in each of the source files which reference memcpy(). This isn't practical with a program with tens of thousands of source files. After reboot of web-server accessing website shows "Forbidden", restarting httpd all is fine

Hi. I am stuck with this one and I do not know where and how to search for this problem nor do I know how to fix it. When I reboot one of our servers (CentOS 6.7, selinux target, yum fully updated) the http server loads fine (no erros) but when accessing one of the server's websites it displays "Forbidden", restarting the httpd server (command line) will give full access and all is fine. What troubles me that a simple restart of the daemon fixes everything but it does not come up on reboot. CPU Limit in Centos

A few years ago, I vaguely recall some issue with RHEL needing a special license or something like that, if you had more than a certain amount of CPU's or a certain amount of RAM. Does Centos work fine for 2 CPU's, 16 cores, 32 threads, and 256 G of ram? Centos6 specifically.

EL7: Detecting FS errors on XFS while mounted

Is there a way of checking an XFS filesystem for clean/dirty status while mounted? One of the checks we've long performed is an FS-level error check. This is *not a full-on fsck*, this is "asking the file system if it noted any problems". This is done while the file system is mounted and "hot". For example, here's how we'd check an ext* partition: # debugfs -R "show_super_stats -h" /dev/md127 | grep -i "Filesystem state" We'd look for "Filesystem state: clean" (or something else if not clean). ZFS also allows for a "hot & mounted" check for dirty file system: # zpool status So far, I've been unsuccessful in finding an equivalent for XFS.

Linux ate my RAM...

Hello everyone, Excuse the title. I'm trying to do something very specific that goes against some common assumptions. I am aware of how Linux uses available memory to cache. This, in almost all cases, is desirable. I've spent years explaining to users how to properly read the free output. I'm now trying to increase VM density on host systems (by host, I mean the physical system, not the underlying guest machines). VMWare can over-allocate memory as long as it's not being used. Because of caching, from VMWare's perspective, all Linux memory is being "used". I am aware of the inherent risks in over-allocation of resources on a VMWare system.This tuning is strictly for development systems where performance and stability are not as critical. The increase in vm density is an acceptable tradeoff. My questions: 1) What options are available in CentOS to limit the page cache? SuSe has vm.pagecache_limit_mb and vm.pagecache_limit_ignore_dirty which, in conjunction with swappiness tweaks, appears to do what I need. 2) Any experience with enabling /sys/kernel/mm/ksm/run on non-KVM workloads? As KSM only applies to non-pagecache memory, it doesn't immediately help me here but could be incrementally useful (https://www.kernel.org/doc/Documentation/vm/ksm.txt) 3) Is there any way to control /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches and limit it to a number of entries or age? Dropping the filesystem cache, though it unmarks those pages, has performance implications. Thanks in advance for any input or links.

Intel SSD

Hi I have a supermicro server, motherboard is with C612 chipset and beside that with LSI3108 raid controller integrated. Two Intel SSD DC S3710 200GB. OS: Centos 7.1 up to date. My problem is that the Intel SSD Data Center Tool (ISDCT) does not recognize the SSD drives when they connected to the standard S-ATA ports on the motherboard, but through the LSI raid controller is working. Does somebody know what could be the problem? I talked to the Intel support and they said the problem is that Centos is not supported OS ... only RHEL 7. But if not supported should not work on the LSI controlled neither. Thanks, -- Levi

Hi, folks, I've got it set up, and it alleges that it's backing up Windows. However, when I try to run a restore for a Windows box, in bconsole, I say restore, then from most recent, then the client, and I want to select files. It builds its directory tree (it says), then tells me it's at c:/ (*Nix, not Win backslash)... and there's nothing there. The fileset stanza says to back up File = "c:/Users" Am I doing something wrong? Do I need a separate template stanza just for Windows? mark

Running Fedora under CentOS via systemd-nspawn?

tl;dr - Is anybody "running" a Fedora system via systemd-nspawn under CentOS? Long version: Before CentOS 7, I used chroot to create "lightweight containers" where I could cleanly add extra repos and/or software without the risk of "polluting" my main system (and potentially ending up in dependency hell). The primary driver for this was MythTV, which has dozens of deps that span multiple repos. Without "containing" the MythTV installation within a chroot environment, I would inevitably lead to conflicts when doing a yum update. When I upgraded to CentOS 7, I found out that systemd-nspawn is "chroot on steroids". After figuring it all out, I replicated my MythTV "container", and things were great. Now I have a need for a particular piece of software: HandBrake. I found this site[1] that packages it for both Fedora and CentOS. But the CentOS version is a little older, as the latest HandBrake requires gtk3. The latest version is available for Fedora however. So I thought, what if I could "run" Fedora under systemd-nspawn. Well, I definitely *can* do it. I copied the base Fedora filesystem layout off the Live CD, then booted into it via systemd-nspawn. I was able to add repos (including the one for HandBrake), and actually install then run the HandBrake GUI. So while this does work, I'm wondering if it's safe? I'm thinking that at least some of the Fedora tools assume that they are running under a proper Fedora kernel, whereas in my scheme, they are running under a CentOS kernel. I'm sure there have been changes to the kernel API between the CentOS kernel and the Fedora kernel. Am I risking system stability by doing this? Anyone have any thoughts or experience doing something like this, i.e. running "foreign" Linux distros under CentOS via systemd-nspawn? What if I tried to do this with Debian or Arch or Gentoo? firewalld rule syntax

I'm still learning firewalld obviously, and I am having trouble groking the documentation to understand how to do this. I know I could do an iptables direct, but that doesn't seem like the "right" way to do it. What I'm trying to do is allow a specific service, only for a specific ip. Effectively, SNMP should be allowed form a specific IP address (the systems monitor). What would be the most correct way of doing this? Create a zone for the snmp, then add the associated interface to that zone? firewall-cmd --zone=monitoring --add-source=1.2.3.4/32 firewall-cmd --zone=monitoring --add-service=snmp firewall-cmd --zone=monitoring --add-interface=ens192 firewall-cmd --runtime-to-permanent Would this be an appropriate approach? Greetings, One of my biggest frustrations with CentOS 7 has been firewalld. Essentially all of the documentation just flat doesn't work. One common thing that needs to be done is to change the zone of an interface, however I've tried: firewall-cmd --permanent --zone=internal --change-interface=ens192 firewall-cmd --permanent --zone=internal --add-interface=ens192 I've also tried setting in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-ens192: ZONE=internal ZONE="internal" No matter what, when firewalld starts, ens192 will be in the public zone. What am I doing wrong? Hi, I am setting up my development environment. I am new to linux. I installed Apache on CentOS 7.0. I modified /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf and tried to restart Apache. I got the below error' AH00526: Syntax error on line 393 of /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf Wrapper /home/currencybooking/fcgi-bin/php5.fcgi cannot be accessed:...enied The line no 393 in /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf is FCGIWrapper /home/currencybooking/fcgi-bin/php5.fcgi .php Later I tried to install FCGIWrapper. [root@cbcdev mod_fastcgi-2.4.6]# make top_dir=/usr/lib64/httpd Makefile:12: /usr/lib64/httpd/build/special.mk: No such file or directory make: *** No rule to make target `/usr/lib64/httpd/build/special.mk'. About IPv6 Link-Local Address(CentOS5)

Hello Because I did not send , and then retransmitted. I am using the CentOS5.7. In a state where the link down, I did a ping to the IPv4 and IPv6. IPv4 succeeds in ping. but, IPv6 is ping fails. Once confirmed by ifconfig, it did not have a Link-Local Address. At link down, Is the Link-Local Address not set? Rsync and differential Backups

Hi list, how to perform a differential backup using rsync? On web there is a great confusion about diff backup concept when searched with rsync. Users says diff because it copy only differences. For me differential is backup from last full backup. Other users says that to perform a differential backup I must include in rsync command: --backup --backup-dir=/some/path but from manual page of rsync: ############# --backup-dir=DIR In combination with the --backup option, this tells rsync to store all backups in the specified directory on the receiving side. This can be used for incremental backups. You can additionally specify a backup suffix using the --suffix option (otherwise the files backed up in the specified directory will keep their original filenames). .... ################### Then at this point, I can perform a full backup copying base dir after last incremental. I can performa an incremental backup saving change on a specified destdir (using --backup-dir). How I can perform a diff backup? I know that rsync check differences using "the base dir". This dir have "the same content" of backupped source. To make incremental, this base is used. Supposing that I've 500 GB data on source. Make/sync the base-dir of 500GB. Running a full backup (the result file must be a fullbackup.tar.gz), at the end of the process I get a base-dir of 500GB and a .tar.gz of +/- 500GB compressed. Is correct make full backup, performing first an incremental backup on the base-dir and then compress it on a .tar.gz? Or is better resync all source in alternative destdir? In this example I've spent the double space for a full and a base-dir. 500GB Source vs 1TB for base-dir and a full.tar.gz. There is a way to performs other operation (incr and diff) without using the base and save disk space? Thanks in advance.

Differences from upstream RHEL

At work, we use some commercial software, that names RHEL6 as a supported OS, but not Centos6. I would like to know the difference between Centos and RHEL, in order to claim (or not) that we can support our users on Centos instead of RHEL. I see the release notes, that say "Packages modified by CentOS," but it's not clear what the modifications are. I have been browsing around for these details, and have not yet found specifics of *what* was modified in those packages. Can anyone please direct me toward details of what's modified in the packages that centos modifies?

Hi, I am configuring master-slave replication in a MariaDB 10.X over Centos 7.1 and I am having some troubles. When I configure the slave I use the following directies in my.cnf: ... master-host = 192.168.122.2 master-user = slave_user master-password = qwerty master-connect-retry = 60 ... But is seems that the daemon doesn't like them and it refuses to start. Does anybody know if those directives have been removed on that version? Shorewall and the latest kernel problem

I just installed the latest kernel 2.6.32-573.8.1.el6.x86_64 and when I rebooted it shorewall (shorewall-4.5.4-1.el6.noarch) failed with the following error ERROR: a non-empty masq file requires NAT in your kernel and iptables /etc/shorewall/masq (line 15) Question is is this a problem in the kernel or is it a problem in Shorewall? Booting the previous kernel allowed shorewall to start normally. Any one else seen this error, if so what's the fix? Any help would be greatly appreciated. CentOS6: missing kernel module?

Testing out tipc for cluster development, and running into an immediate snag. tipcutils was found in EPEL but despite having a "compatible" kernel, it doesn't seem to actually work. It's a completely updated system, Intel i5 with 16 GB of RAM, nothing remarkable. Any ideas? I'm looking at ways to potentially reduce tracking via browser fingerprints. https://panopticlick.eff.org/ When I go to that url in CentOS FireFox - my browser is very distinct. For me I believe this is largely caused by gstreamer. I run a modern gstreamer, not the CentOS packages gstreamer. My modern gstreamer also includes a lot of the patent-encumbered codecs, and on that eff project page, I can see them being reported by the GStreamer plugin as supported, making my firefox very unique and subject to tracking via browser fingerprint. I'm not sure there is anything I can do about that, other than going back to stock gstreamer which I can't do because I need gstreamer support for some codecs not supported by stock CentOS gstreamer. I think for anything that is a plugin, I think the browser should ask the user. That would make browser fingerprinting more difficult. One of the plugins though that is detected is from rhythmbox. I didn't even know there was a rhytmbox plugin for firefox. /usr/lib64/mozilla/plugins/librhythmbox-itms-detection-plugin.so It is part of the core rhythmbox package. I certainly have no need for it, and I doubt very many people do. It seems to me that maybe that plugin should be part of a sub-package to rhythmbox rather than rhythmbox itself, strictly from a security perspective so that if there is an exploitable bug in it, it will only be a vector for those who actually want that plugin. Does anyone actually use that plugin for anything? Maybe it should just be removed from the Fedora / RHEL / CentOS world.

Hello Centos user. Im learning about c/c++ , so far every thing works great. The problem begins when I try to install a new library or a third party api. For example now I need to install the jsoncpp implementation in my centos box but I have no idea how to do it. I realized that my knolowge about those things is very poor. I would like to ask you for some documentation about libraries directories layout regarding c/c++ programing. Centos 7, ATI card, 30" monitor

Well, I got my user back to being able to use his system, but I've still got one issue: it's running on the VESA driver - there is *no* Catalyst build for this monitor, for CentOS 7. From a lot of googling, nothing's been done since the summer of '14 (lspci reports it as a FirePro V3900). Any thoughts, or pointers, as to if/how I can get X - he's running KDE - to see the full width of the monitor, not just about 4" less, or is that not possible with the VESA driver? mark

synthesizing yum transactions

Ok, I'm trying way too hard to shovel myself out of a hole. We have a bunch of remote CentOS 6 servers, that were configured with kickstart. They've subsequently had additional RPMs installed/updated via the 'rpm' utility. We have reason to occasionally rewind the state of the server back to it's original set of RPMs. Of late, we've found that 'yum' handles this scenario quite nicely, IFF (if and only if) that all RPM changes were handled via the 'yum' utility itself, such that yum can manage a list of transactions. In this case 'yum history rollback 1' does exactly what we need. My problem is that we did not exclusively use 'yum' to do this work, and even though there are newer RPMs in place, yum only knows about transaction ID 1, from the initial kickstart installation. Hence, it thinks there's nothing to rollback from. So, given the knowledge of what RPMs are currently installed, is there a way to invent a new transaction incorporating them, without reinstalling the RPMs in question? I feel I've come close, with this methodology, basically coercing yum to rebuild a database in a private directory: # installroot for yum workdir=/home/yum-hack rm -rf ${workdir} mkdir -p ${workdir} cd ${workdir} # list of newer RPMs (after transaction ID 1) new=new_rpms # dup repos and rpm/yum databases for tree in /var/lib/rpm/ /var/cache/yum/ /var/lib/yum/ /etc/yum.repos.d/; do echo ${tree} mkdir -p ./${tree} cp -pr ${tree}/* ./${tree} done cat new_rpm | xargs /usr/bin/yum -y --nogpgcheck --installroot=${workdir} \ --setopt=tsflags=noscripts reinstall On the surface, this seems to work, in that I now can see a transaction list: yum --installroot=/home/yum-hack history list all But, any effort to rollback to tid 1 yields: Transaction history is incomplete, before 5. You can use 'history rollback force', to try anyway. Error: Failed history rollback, incomplete So, I've clearly tricked myself. Does anyone have any suggestions about how I _should_ retroactively invent an additional yum transaction? This there some state I failed to introduce into the the above private directory? I've only begun to dive into the yum source to try to track down what triggers this error, but if anyone has some immediate knowledge, or suggestion for a better forum where I can ask this question? CentOS 7, new video card in server

Hi, folks, I've got a new Dell R730 server. My users have two Tesla K-80's in it. Then, they wanted to add video, for complicated reasons. Anyway, there's the onboard VGA; I just put in a Quadro K600 (they require DP, and this card offers that). Plug in a VGA monirot (the card even comes with two adaptors, one from large DP to DVI-D, and one DVI-D to VGA. (And according to the quick start guide, there's no additional power cable.) Boot the system, and no video on from the card. In the BIOS, the only thing I see that appears to relate is enable/disable onboard video. I'm looking at that as a last option, since I have no idea how I'd *undo* it, if I then have zero video.... Dell, of course, doesn't support ordinary video cards in a server.... So, anyone have clues, or pointers, to getting video coming out of the new card? Now, I have no issues with putting the proprietary NVidia driver on, but I'm trying to figure out if I'm missing something. Note that, as a server, of course, it is coming up in runlevel 3. mark

HTML5 to SQL under CentOS

Several years ago I wrote a simple, short, HTML/PHP program on my CentOS server for adding items to a MySQL/MariaDB database on the server from my Fedora laptop. Recently I thought I would try to be up-to-date and re-write the program using HTML5 Forms, which seemed the proper thing to do, but I'm finding this surprisingly difficult. Does anyone have, or can point me to, a simple HTML5 program (preferably not using Java or PHP) for this task ? I've already found that Firefox, the browser I normally use on my laptop, surprisingly (to me) does not support the HTML Forms date item, or at least does not have a date picker to go with it. So it seems I would have to use Chrome on my laptop, which is annoying but not fatal. Also it seems that CentOS does not support WebSQL. Is there an alternative that serves the same purpose. Changing the centos name on boot

I have been playing around with customizing the centos to create a spin for my workplace. I am using centos 6.6 minimal, and trying to change the centos name to some random string. I have been able to change the name in the grub using grub.conf, but the name while the system is booting, I am not able to find a reference to that. Can somebody help me with that ? Server used in DOS attack on UDP port 0

Hi, One of our AWS machines was used in an DOS attack last night and I am looking for possible attack vectors. AWS tells me it was sending UDP port 0 traffic to a cloudflare address. This instance had an incorrectly configured AWS security group exposing all ports. The server in question is a Centos 7 based FreeIPA server, OpenVPN concentrator and DNS server. With a brief inspection before the instance was stopped no evidence of intrusion could be detected in the obvious places and the machine is protected by standard SELinux policies. *sigh* The answer is that the large exported filesystem is a very large XFS... and at least through CentOS 6, upstream has *never* fixed an NFS bug that I find, googling, being complained about in '09: it gags on inodes > 32bit (not sure if that's signed, or unsigned, but....). The answer was to either create, or find an unneeded directory with a < 32bit inode, rename the high-number inode, move the new directory to that name and location, move everything that was under the old high-inode dir to under the new, low-number inode dir with the correct name, and reexport; I restarted nfs for good measure, and all is right with the world (well, after I restarted autofs and nfslock on the clients). mark

prefork vs worker mpm in apache

Hey guys, We had to recompile apache 2.4.12 because we needed to disable thread safety in php (ZTS). Because for some reason when compiling php with the --disable-maintainer-zts with the worker mpm model and checking the php info page, it was saying that thread safety was still enabled. So when we recompiled apache to use the prefetch worker model instead of worker, the php info page was showing that thread safety was disabled. But after that change apache processes spiked from around 11 processes per machine to well over 250 processes at any given time. These are the tuning settings we have in apache: StartServers 10 #MinSpareServers 10 #MaxSpareServers 25 ServerLimit 250 MaxRequestWorkers 250 MaxConnectionsPerChild 1000 KeepAlive On KeepAliveTimeout 30 EnableSendfile Off So I was just wondering how this change could've cause this problem of having the number of apache processes spike. And if there are any other changes we can make to apache to bring the process count down? Also I realize that installing apache / php from source isn't standard practice on red hat variants. But at the time that these servers were setup the latest apache at that time (2.4.12) wasn't available as an RPM. So we just decided to install from source. I've run out of ideas on this.... A CentOS 6 box serving nfs: two directories separately: /this/partition/dir0 and /this/partition/dir1. Everything looks good on it. On the servers it's exporting to - two are CentOS 6, one's CentOS 7, they all automount /net/server/this/partition/dir0... but no matter what I've done, restarting autofs and nfslock, umounted things... but with autofs off, even when I manually mount it to /mnt, I get stale file handle. The two dirs are owned by root, but one's got a different group. Selinux settings are the same. Clues for the poor? mark

I have two servers identified as `server-1 - 192.168.3.128` and `server-2 - 192.168.3.130`. I am setting up `capifony` for automatic deployment from server-1 to server-2 and this is what I have done so far: 1. In both servers I have created a user `deploy` without password since that's the user I will use for deployment. 2. In server-1 I setup a SSH keys by running the command: `ssh-keygen` and I leave without pass-phrase and default directories. 3. I am using cent OS 6.7 andI have installed omnet++ 4.6 on it.When I am trying to create a new omnet++ project then suddenly omnet++ window is terminating and an error message is showing as "A problem in the Java-1.7.0-openjdk-1..7.0.85-2.6.1.3el6_7package has been detected".Then I uninstalled this version of java and tried with version "1.7.0_91" and "1.7.0_79" but can't solve this problem.please help me in solving this problem.

Hi all, I need to restart a service on a few elasticsearch nodes. I'm trying to do it with pssh. C7: screensaver locks screen

Strange thing just began happening this past weekend with my Centos-7 netbook (using the MATE desktop, which may mean it's an EPEL problem...). the lock screen checkbox in the screensaver's UI is NOT checked. I've even used the dconf editor to uncheck ALL the boxes in the screensaver section that relate to locking the screen. nada. no such luck. even after rebooting, it still locks the screen. Disaster recovery recommendations

I don't have a clear reason why they have failed (possibly due to a deep, off-brand, flakey mobo; but it's still inconclusive, but I would like to find a disaster recovery service that can hopefully recover the data. This is something I would like to share, and if possible, get feedback. I am working on a calendar webapp - something to replace Google Calendar for webmasters that do not like the idea of their users being tracked. Part of that project involves time zone selection, and time zone selection I want internationalized, and I found the existing functions in PHP to be extremely poor. As in the php function for getting the preferred language from the browser was often flat out incorrect. That led me to creating my own class for BCP 47 support : https://calendar.librelamp.com/BCP47 Not perfect yet (er, probably never will be perfect) but at least the bugs I find are my bugs so I can figure out how to fix them. Just found one - with perfectly valid language tag es-419 when the class attempts to create a glibc language tag, it uses es_ES.utf8 which is obviously wrong. I didn't take into account UN region codes when it tries to find a glibc match. But anyway, I know it is asking a lot, but I want to get this right and would love feedback from anyone who deals with internationalizing php web applications. Thanks, Alice

Greetings. Please help me. I have installed Centos 7 , but when I do, yum update give me error next. Complementos cargados:fastestmirror, langpacks One of the configured repositories failed (Desconocido), and yum doesn't have enough cached data to continue. At this point the only safe thing yum can do is fail. There are a few ways to work "fix" this: 1. Contact the upstream for the repository and get them to fix the problem. 2. Reconfigure the baseurl/etc. for the repository, to point to a working upstream. This is most often useful if you are using a newer distribution release than is supported by the repository (and the packages for the previous distribution release still work). 3. Disable the repository, so yum won't use it by default. Yum will then just ignore the repository until you permanently enable it again or use --enablerepo for temporary usage: yum-config-manager --disable <repoid> 4. Configure the failing repository to be skipped, if it is unavailable. Note that yum will try to contact the repo. when it runs most commands, so will have to try and fail each time (and thus. yum will be be much slower). If it is a very temporary problem though, this is often a nice compromise: yum-config-manager --save --setopt=<repoid>.skip_if_unavailable=true Cannot find a valid baseurl for repo: base/7/x86_64 Gracias de antemano. We are receiving LOTS of emails that contain empty XLS or DOC documents with embedded virus macros. These are getting past SPAMASSASSIN, Clamav and Kaspersky. I'm trying to write a filter for EXIM to block these emails but I need to know a good, quick, command-line to detect an empty doc with a macro. Is there anything available that I can use?? I have managed to write a PERL script to detect empty xls xlsx, doc and docx files but I cannot detect whether they have any macros embedded Gary

RPM `requires` installation order

Hello All, I'm a bit of newbie with rpm/yum, seeking the help from rpm/yum experts. Suppose I have an RPM package A which depends on package B. RPM A's spec has 'Requires:B' tag with 'autoprov' and 'autoreq' enabled. When I install RPM A on a 'centos 6.5' machine with 'RPM version 4.8.0', using the command `yum install A` : * `rpm` installs A first, then it installs B. * The installation of B could partially fail. That is, A would installed even if the installation of the dependency, B has failed. Is this the expected behaviour? (Shouldn't B be installed before A?) Can the same behaviour be expected across versions (such as el5)? I was hoping that the dependencies would be installed before the main package is installed. Which would prevent the installation of the main package, If one of the dependencies failed to install. I have tried `PreReq` tag as well, which has same behaviour as far as I can tell. Is there any other means to accomplish my requirement? Thanks, Shyam

ssh freezes

All too often, my ssh session will freeze. I'm fairly certain the problem is at my end. None of the tilde commands work. In particular, ~# and ~. are nonfunctional. I can write to ssh's terminal window from another terminal window. If I kill the ssh process, I can ssh in again. The next time it happens, I will try another ssh session without killing the first one. dmesg did not show me anything interesting. USB drive is "read-only file system" and cannot umount - how to fix

I 'just' noticed that at some point, my USB backup drive on my server is mounted as read-only and all of my background sync cron jobs have been failing. So I need to fix this without rebooting the server. I can VNC into the server and running "mount" shows: /dev/sdc1 on /media/HD103SI type ext4 (rw,nosuid,nodev,uhelper=udisks) and umount gets: # umount /dev/sdc1 umount: /media/HD103SI: device is busy. (In some cases useful info about processes that use the device is found by lsof(8) or fuser(1)) How can I get this drive r/w?

CentOS-6 reboots

I am now in receipt of an update to qemu-img and qemu-kvm. My practice up to now has been to restart the virtual host after applying qemu updates. This in turn implies that all of the virtual guests on that host also will need restarting since suspending them takes much, much longer than a restart. The issue of whether or not the requirement to reboot servers based on CentOS was increasing or not was recently raised. My question then: Is a restart of the host following applying these updates actually necessary? Running CentOS 6.7, on an older HP DL580 G5. We've got a Dell 12-bay RAID box plugged into a PERC H800 (aka LSI Liberator) that we put in the HP, and that works fine. We've got a new RAID (a JetStor), and are trying to plug it in. The layout is that the Dell RAID is dual-pathed DAS. Each PERC has two DAS ports. We've got the Dell RAID in the top port of each PERC. I *thought* I could just plug the new RAID, which also has two ports, into the bottom two ports on the PERC. TRied rescanning the SCSI bus, /sys/class/scsi_host/host[0-5]/scan, with no apparent sight of the new RAID. Can I do this the way I've got it, or do I need to daisy-chain the new RAID through the old RAID? mark

virt-manager

so... I've been tinkering with KVM again. my desktop is windows, the linux server is remote, so I have a ssh X tunnel running, and XMing running locally, and launch virt-manager. opens fine, shows the VM I created some time ago.
