VPN connection before login

Hi all, is there a possibility to connect to a VPN manually before login on CentOS desktop (Gnome). I know of a similar functionality in Windows. Is there a tutorial or something? Thank you Tim

Kvm + libvirt + virt-manager

Hi list, I have updated C7 to 7.1 and get some issue (I don't know if problems depend from upgrade). My first problem is on virt-manager that crash after some time. From system messages I get that virt-manager is crashed with signal sigsegv and this problem is related to python (python get sigsegv). Anyone get similar behaviour after upgrade? Another problem, I can't say if it showed before/after upgrade, is related to libvirt when I shutdown my system. On my host I have different vm runned on KVM, where only 2 have autostart enabled. When shutting down the system I get from the console an error like this: Suspending test1: Done Suspending test2: ... error: Failed to save domain $someid state error: internal error: unable to execute QEMU command 'migrate': State blocked by non-migratable device '0000:00:04.8/ich9_ahci' Vm test2 has a disk attached as raw device and not as image file. This message, with same error, is showed also for 2 other vm with autostart disabled and disk on qcow2 images, but only when them are online during shutdown. When system starts, all vms are running without problem. I can't figure out with this error... Why libvirt-guest.sh run migrate command when I shutdown the system? Hope in help. Thanks in advance

In other words I don't see /var/log/nrpe.log or whatever. :) And when I tail -f /var/log/secure or /var/log/messages I don't see any entries turning up in them when I hit the client with check_nrpe. rsync backup to fileserver - mystery

I have an Intel SS4000E fileserver that I've been using for several years to backup my home directory to. I have a daily cron job that runs the following command: rsync -av --delete /home/frankcox/ /mnt/fileserver/backup I have a directory named misc/sheet-music/classical. About a week ago I created a new subdirectory there, /home/frankcox/misc/sheet-music-classical/Russian\ and\ Eastern\ European/ Notice the spaces in the subdirectory name; I don't know if that's relevant or not. I store a number of bzip-ed pdf files in that subdirectory, like this: BARTOKA.pdf.bz2, BARTOKB.pdf.bz2 and so on. Now for the mystery. The rsync command above gets me a report in my email from cron telling me what files were changed or deleted since the last backup run. And ever since I created that misc/sheet-music-classical/Russian\ and\ Eastern\ European subdirectory, it appears that the files in that subdirectory are getting copied to the fileserver again every day, since they are all listed in the email report that I receive. diff -r --brief /home/frankcox/misc/sheet-music-classical/Russian\ and\ Eastern\ European/ /mnt/fileserver/backup/misc/misc/sheet-music-classical/Russian\ and\ Eastern\ European/ That command gives me no output, so the contents of that subdirectory appear to match on both machines. eno1 and eth0 on centos 7.1

I installed 7.1 with the command line values biosdevname=0 net.ifnames=0 thinking this would result in ifcfg-eth0 being the file to use... The system still created an ifcfg-eno1 file and that was what is being used for network config information. I remove the ifcfg-eno1 and rebooted - got no network. I then copied back the ifcfg-eth0 to ifcfg-en01 and changed the device name in the file and rebooted and back to the correct network. How can I get just the old behaviour of ifcfg-eth0 ? Still new to 7.1... I noticed today that when I did a cp command on the console and it asked me to overrite (as it should) the file name had a lower case a with a ^ above the a. Never ran across that before. What might I have not configured? Thanks, Jerry

Cron Issues

I have noanacron installed on a fresh centos 7 install. I added this too settings. nano /etc/cron.d/0hourly */5 * * * * root run-parts /etc/cron.fiveminutes */1 * * * * root run-parts /etc/cron.minute 0,30 * * * * root run-parts /etc/cron.halfhour and then created the directories for it. Now I keep getting these errors in secure log. **** pam_systemd(crond:session): Failed to create session: Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken. Can anyone tell me how to resolve it?

nfs (or tcp or scheduler) changes between centos 5 and 6?

We have a "compute cluster" of about 100 machines that do a read-only NFS mount to a big NAS filer (a NetApp FAS6280). The jobs running on these boxes are analysis/simulation jobs that constantly read data off the NAS. We recently upgraded all these machines from CentOS 5.7 to CentOS 6.5. We did a "piecemeal" upgrade, usually upgrading five or so machines at a time, every few days. We noticed improved performance on the CentOS 6 boxes. But as the number of CentOS 6 boxes increased, we actually saw performance on the CentOS 5 boxes decrease. By the time we had only a few CentOS 5 boxes left, they were performing so badly as to be effectively worthless. What we observed in parallel to this upgrade process was that the read latency on our NetApp device skyrocketed. This in turn caused all compute jobs to actually run slower, as it seemed to move the bottleneck from the client servers' OS to the NetApp. This is somewhat counter-intuitive: CentOS 6 performs faster, but actually results in net performance loss because it creates a bottleneck on our centralized storage. All indications are that CentOS 6 seems to be much more "aggressive" in how it does NFS reads. And likewise, CentOS 5 was very "polite", to the point that it basically got starved out by the introduction of the 6.5 boxes. What I'm looking for is a "deep dive" list of changes to the NFS implementation between CentOS 5 and CentOS 6. Or maybe this is due to a change in the TCP stack? Or maybe the scheduler? We've tried a lot of sysctl tcp tunings, various nfs mount options, anything that's obviously different between 5 and 6... But so far we've been unable to find the "smoking gun" that causes the obvious behavior change between the two OS versions. Just hoping that maybe someone else out there has seen something like this, or can point me to some detailed documentation that might clue me in on what to look for next. Thanks!

Emacs issue in CentOS 7

Sometimes when I save a file in emacs, it thinks that the buffer is still dirty. If I use C-x C-w to write the file, I get an overwrite warning but the buffer always goes clean. Perhaps this is related to the file atime? My /home is btrfs with relatime. I always thought emacs was smarter than that, for example I run emacs on files mounted noatime on CentOS 6 without any issues. A bit of searching the interwebs did not provide any clues. Anyone? -- greg

Prevent network setup from changing the hostname

How can I block network setup (via NetworkManager) from changing the machine's hostname whenever the network configuration changes? The problem: When my graphical login session starts, the xauth database gets an token that is labeled with the hostname at that time. If there is not yet a network connection, that will be "localhost.localdomain". When a network connection is then made (my wireless connection needs the key from my login), the hostname changes. That breaks X session sharing because there is no xauth token that matches the current hostname. If I get a root shell with "su -", commands launched from that shell cannot access the display. If I set up an ssh connection with "ssh -X", I get a complaint about missing xauth data. On systems with an "ONBOOT=yes" network connection, there is no problem since the hostname is set before the X session starts. It's just when the hostname changes during the X session that there is a problem. I am running CentOS 6, fully updated. It's taken me a long time to track down the root cause of this problem. Now I just need a solution, preferably something less ham-fisted than "xhost -". -- Bob Nichols "NOSPAM" is really part of my email address. Do NOT delete it.

Real sh? Or other efficient shell for non-interactive scripts

I'm sure most people here know about Dash in Debian. Have there been discussions about providing a more efficient shell in Centos for use with heavily invoked non-interactive scripts? With sh being a link to bash in Centos I don't know if it would explode if the link was changed to something else, but at least the scripts we made on our own that run certain services could be changed and tested manually to another shell. Are there other people who have experience in this and can provide interesting guidance?

Boot message of a modprobe.d conf file that does not exist

Hi all, I got a message at boot: dracut-pre-udev: libkmod: kmod_config_parse: /etc/modprobe.d/thinkpad_battery.conf line 2: ignoring bad line starting with 'options' I have had this file to load modules for my thinkpad (acpi_call & tp_smapi) but I removed it after recompiling the modules for a new kernel and using "make install load". My question is, why this nonexistent file is still demanded. Thanks in advance Tim

Route traffic through private IP for only certain hosts

Hi I am having a weird problem which I cant figure out - so I was hoping someone here could give me a hand. First off the end goal is that a specific server in my network runs an IPSEC connection to another company and I want all other servers to route traffic for the IP on that network through this single server. Server 1 in this example is the server that runs the IPSEC connection. (CentOS 6.6) Server 2 in this example is an app server that would route traffic for only that specific IP through server 1. Holding the alt button while right-clicking on the mouse does not seem to do anything. I do not have anything installed (other than what came with the LiveCD). Many thanks!

CentOS 7 /boot location

I noticed that (in a case with a two disk md mirror and lvm), the CentOS 7 installer is now placing /boot as the *last* partition on the disk. I'm assuming that others are seeing this behavior. Does anyone know why it's now the last instead of the first? (Seems to work, though.) Devin

can't install gd-devel on centos 7.1

Broken Selinux Postfix Policy?

Trying to restart postfix installed from yum. Restart fails, I get: type=AVC msg=audit(1430429813.721:12167): avc: denied { unlink } for pid=31624 comm="master" name="defer" dev="dm-0" ino=981632 scontext=system_u:system_r:postfix_master_t:s0 tcontext=system_u:object_r:postfix_spool_maildrop_t:s0 tclass=sock_file I guess it needs to remove the /var/spool/postfix/defer socket file. audit2allow says this will fix it: allow postfix_master_t postfix_spool_maildrop_t:sock_file unlink; But how do I add this permission to the existing Postfix Selinux policy??? Why was it missing??? By the way, I also had AVCs when I tried to add another instance of Postfix smtpd on local port 20025. Very frustrating there is no docs how to add a rule for this common change. I don't know if I did the right thing: semanage port -a -t smtp_port_t -p tcp 20025 Is this the right way? Why isn't this documented somewhere?

Login screen under 7.1

Since 7.1 the update the login has switched from the analogue to the digital. This wouldn't be a problem, but I have the digital rotated 90 degrees into a portrait mode. Login is thus best done lying down! Once I've logged in there is no problem, the screens are easily configured in the settings menu. Can I set it globally though? Forcing yum update

New to CentOS and running 6.6. I have previously installed gstreamer with plugins including libmodplug from rpmforge to listen to mp3 streams. Yum now tells me that a later version of libmodplug is available from epel but I am having problems forcing updating libmodplug from epel. I have tried launching yum shell and then remove libmodplug, install libmodplug while having made sure epel is available. This after having read that it is a bad idea to use no-deps with yum. My attempt, however, fails with a not found message. What would the correct approach be? Thank you.

CentOS 7 Installer Fail With 3Ware Controller

I have a new SuperMicro X10-DRI host with a 3Ware controller that hangs when I try to install CentOS 7 on it. CentOS 7 NFS client problems

Looking for a workaround. #undef TL;DR I'm trying to get a new CentOS 7.1 workstation running, and having some problems with NFS filesystems. The server is a fully patched CentOS 6 server. On the NFS filesystem, there are two subdirectories owned by a regular user (joe). (There are actually more and by multiple users, but I'll just show the two.) That user exists on both the NFS server and this CentOS 7 NFS client. However, the user on the client machine is unable to perform various operations. (The operations work when logged into the server.) $ whoami joe $ cd /nfs $ ls -l drwx------. 6 joe joe 4096 Apr 23 11:20 one drwxr-xr-x. 4 joe joe 4096 Dec 14 2011 two $ cd one one: Permission denied. $ cd two $ ls subdir1 subdir2 $ touch testfile touch: cannot touch testfile: Permission denied mount(1) shows that the filesystem is mounted rw. The server has it exported rw to the entire subnet. Other machines (CentOS 5) mount the same filesystems without a problem. Looks a lot like an idmapd issue, right? On the server: # id joe uid=501(joe) gid=501(joe) groups=501(joe) Back on the client: $ ps auxww | grep idmap | grep -v grep $ id joe uid=1000(joe) gid=1000(joe) groups=1000(joe) $ cd /nfs $ ls -n drwx------. 6 1000 1000 4096 Apr 23 11:20 one drwxr-xr-x. 4 1000 1000 4096 Dec 14 2011 two So it looks like even though the name/UID mapping is correct even though the idmapd daemon isn't running on the client. (It looks like CentOS7 only starts idmapd when it's running an NFS *server*.) # systemctl list-units | grep nfs nfs.mount loaded active mounted /nfs proc-fs-nfsd.mount loaded active mounted NFSD configuration filesystem var-lib-nfs-rpc_pipefs.mount loaded active mounted RPC Pipe File System nfs-config.service loaded active exited Preprocess NFS configuration nfs-client.target loaded active active NFS client services The behavior was tested again with SELinux in permissive mode; no change. Splunking a bit more shows some similar behavior for other distros: <https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nfs-utils/+bug/966734> <https://bugzilla.linux-nfs.org/show_bug.cgi?id=226> Yep, this is a situation where LDAP and Kerberos aren't in play. And the CentOS 5, CentOS 6, and other UNIXen boxes are using consistent UID/GID mappings. However, CentOS7 (well, RHEL7) changed the minimum UID/GID for regular accounts, so when the account was created on the latter, the UID is out of sync. So much for idmapd (without the fixes involved in the above URLs). Has anyone else run into this and have a solution other than forcing UIDs to match? Devin

Resetting tcp timestamp

TCP timestamps on some (but not all?) of our CentOs hosts are being reported as a vulnerability by OSSIM. I have looked into the matter briefly and cannot say that I consider this a serious security issue. The vulnerability seems limited to determining the uptime of the target host. The question therefore arises as to whether or not there is any way to reset the tcp timestamp present value to zero or some randomly determined value. If not then what are the technical impediments? I am cognisant of the role of tcp timestamps in handling serial number rollovers. However, since the timestamp itself also must rollover, given sufficient uptime (~288 days I believe I read), what prevents one from manually forcing that event? Cluster gets stopped

Hi I am using a two node cluster to achieve high availability. I am basically testing a scenario where in if i shutdown my node (node-1) then the other node (node-2) should start functioning like node-1. How to stagger fsck executions

CentOS 6 Hi All: Over the weekend I had to reboot one of my systems and got hit with fsck runs on all of the filesystems. I would not mind so much except doing them all at once took over an hour. I would like to be able to stagger these, ideally only execute one fsck per reboot. I have been able to think of two possible solutions but neither is terrific. My first idea was to manually run fsck on each filesystem, one every couple of weeks. That way they will not all come due at the same time if we reboot on a regular basis. The second idea was to set each filesystem to a different random count value. This would run the risk of having two or more executions at the same time but it would probably not be very frequent. We may also use NSA RHEL 5 secure configuration guide to get some insight or use it as a baseline. semi-OT: t-bird mime type on .pdf attachment is wrong

I was sending my manager a copy of a form, and attached it (not inline), using -t-bird, and he complains it didn't want to open. Looking at the message source, t-bird had decided that the mime type was all/allfiles, though the name ended in .pdf. I've searched via the config editor, and I've been googling, and not finding anything. (I just *adore* the current google: I have +"all/allfiles" in the search terms, and in the para it displays on a hit I see "all somethingorother", with the word "all" bolded....) Anyone got ideas? I've looked in .thunderbird/<blah>.default/mime_types.rdf, and everything looks good in there. mark

I have a file /etc/sysconfig/network and in the file is cat /etc/sysconfig/network # Created by anaconda HOSTNAME=zotac_c7.msgnet.com [root@localhost ~]# I rebooted and the prompt is still localhost ? What is the new thing in CentOS 7 to set the host name such that then the prompt is correct also? Thanks Jerry

In CentOS 7.x, two new Live CDs are introduced: CentOS-7.0-1406-x86_64-GnomeLive.iso and CentOS-7.0-1406-x86_64-KdeLive.iso My question is: is this a long term strategy? or in other words, will they be maintained in all future CentOS 7.x releases? Since CentOS 6.4 or 6.5, many system tools are removed from Live CD. That limits many use cases. I am checking that if I can rely on the new Gnome/KDE based Live CD which contains more system tools.

IP aliases for services (including dhcpd)?

I'd like to consolidate the services from several old servers onto 2 CentOS7 VMs that are currently running dhcpd in a balanced/failover configuration. It will simplify things to add the IPs from the old servers as aliases, at least temporarily so everything will continue to connect without changes. However, after adding the first one, I see in the logs that DHCPD is sending its DHCPACKs alternating between ens192 and ens192:0 every other time, but oddly it is always using the non-alias IP as the source every time according to tcpdump -n. kworker 100% of single core on mulit-core processor usage inquiry

Greetings everyone. I am experiencing the kworker issue where a kworker is using 100% of a given core. This behavior was only observed after having installed a new water cooler, to replace a cooler that had died. (Sealed closed loop device from Corsair) The processor is staying around 40 degrees celsius as reported by the MB UEFI interface. (ksysguard shows between 29 degrees and 30 degrees, when running KDE 4) I am unable to isolate a cause, or resolution for getting the kworker usage back to normal. Very basic description of specs are as follows: AMD FX-8350 (not overclocked) 32GB Corsair memory (1866Mhz non-overclocked) Sabortooth 990FX MB I have checked the locations for interrupts which has been indicated online, however, I do not have any specific interrupts that are showing as even having a high integer value to unset. Two quick questions: 1) I have not found where I can set the workspaces to 1, not 4. Where is that. 2) My install (text mode only) seems to be using F1 as X11, I have to switch to ALT-F2 to get a login prompt. What controls that? X is not running, this is a console only. Thanks, Jerry

C7 systemd and network configuration

Hi all, I used to manage network through /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-* Most of my use case are vlans (ie: eth0.1) an aliases (ie: eth1:3) My context in headless VMs (no DE, no Xorg, no GUI) With CentOS7 and systemd: is it still managed with /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-* ? For the mount component, I found that systemd kind of "sources" /etc/fstab and converts it to something for it (so, no worry about fstab), but how about networking? Thanks.

MATE power save and dpms

So, I am using MATE from EPEL as my desktop on one of my laptops. The screen saver was working, however the monitors (if connected via a docking station) were not going to sleep even if selected via the GUI mate power manager. I then discovered that dpms has to be initialized via the command line before it becomes available, regardless of the GUI mate power manager setting. This documentation for Fedora has the detailed info: http://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/Fedora/19/pdf/Power_Management_Guide/Fe… (see page 37 in the document index ... or page 45 of 52 in the pdf reader) But basically, I needed to do this to turn on DPMS to happen at the 10 minute point: xset +dpms; xset dpms 0 0 600 I figured I can't be the only one who had this problem .. so I thought I would post it here. CentOS5 + lighttpd (EPEL) - fix Chrome security warning?

Apologies if I should ask this elsewhere, google search is not helping. I've got a CentOS5 server with lighttpd installed from EPEL, configured for https only (no connections on ports other than 443). I have the latest security updates for openssl, etc. However, when connecting to the server with recent Chrome from Windows or Android, I get the "Your connection is not private" dialog with "NET::ERR_CERT_VALIDITY_TOO_LONG". Is this just a configuration issue (in which case, what do I change?) or do I need to further upgrade one of lighttpd or openssl? Thanks for any feedback.

CentOS6.6 installation failure

I have been installing CentOS for years using PXE, kickstart and NFS, but the procedure fails with CentOS 6.6 for some reason. A PXE-initiated, manual install goes through all the setup steps, and once rpm installation has started, it dies after a few packages: anaconda 13.21.229 exception report Traceback (most recent call first): File "/usr/lib/anaconda/yuminstall.py", line 1006, in _handleFailure os.unlink(package.localPkg()) File "/usr/lib/anaconda/yuminstall.py", line 196, in callback self.ayum._handleFailure(po, trynumber) OSError: [Errno 30] Read-only file system: '/mnt/source/Packages/mailcap-2.1.31-2.el6.noarch.rpm' When a kickstart file is used instead, the installation dies at a different package. I have tried providing the OS installation files from different machines, checked package integrity etc., but cannot figure out what is happening here. The anaconda traceback file also has 12:19:59,354 WARNING : Failed to get file:///mnt/source/Packages/mailcap-2.1.31- 2.el6.noarch.rpm from mirror 1/1, or downloaded file is corrupt 12:19:59,354 WARNING : package download failure, retrying automatically That said, installing 6.4 off the same NFS server works just fine.

Preferred partition type for raid 5

Hey All, I my research I came across a note that a specific partition type was preferable when creating a raid 5 array. I installed my HDs and used mdadm to assemble them into a raid 5 array. I then partitioned the array using gdisk. The default partition type is "8300 Linux filesystem" for the two partitions that I created. The article I read said that a specific partition type was preferred to avoid issues if the array was to be moved to another machine. Now I can't find where I read that. Ive done that chroot environment as described in http://www.jefftk.com/p/32-bit-chroot-on-centos Now my problem ist that yum is not working as i suggested: bash-4.2# yum install sudo Geladene Plugins: fastestmirror http://mirror.centos.org/centos/7/os/i386/repodata/repomd.xml: [Errno 14] HTTP Error 404 - Not Found Anderer Spiegelserver wird versucht. One of the configured repositories failed (CentOS-7 - Base), and yum doesn't have enough cached data to continue. At this point the only safe thing yum can do is fail. There are a few ways to work "fix" this: 1. Contact the upstream for the repository and get them to fix the problem. 2. Reconfigure the baseurl/etc. for the repository, to point to a working upstream. This is most often useful if you are using a newer distribution release than is supported by the repository (and the packages for the previous distribution release still work). 3. Disable the repository, so yum won't use it by default. Yum will then just ignore the repository until you permanently enable it again or use --enablerepo for temporary usage: yum-config-manager --disable base 4. Configure the failing repository to be skipped, if it is unavailable. Note that yum will try to contact the repo. when it runs most commands, so will have to try and fail each time (and thus. yum will be be much slower). Hello, I am using multiple files for logging activities for named daemon. The files are in /var/named/chroot/var/log/named/, for example /var/named/chroot/var/log/named/general.log. I am trying to make logwatch look into them. I have created /usr/share/logwatch/default.conf/logfiles/named.conf like this: LogFile = /var/named/chroot/var/log/named/general.log *ExpandRepeats *OnlyHost *ApplyStdDate Then I have changed /usr/share/logwatch/default.conf/services/named.conf like this: Title = "Named" LogFile = named $named_ip_lookup = No *RemoveHeaders When I run "logwatch --detail High --debug High --print --range All", I can see the log file is proceeded, but I don't see any reports. Is this from a broken sssd? have any a working configuration? EBtables Problem

Hello , I have recently downloaded and setup Centos 7 1503 on a device and encountered a remote connection problem which I was only able to solve via removing ebtables package . After setup , I wanted go forward with IPtables instead of Firewalld , so remove firewalld and install iptables. After configuration and tests , I installed Fail2Ban ,(which brought ebtables with it ) and after reboot I was not able to connect to the device. After every reboot, I had to logon to the device locally , restarted iptables service and then I was able to connect remotely. I traced my steps backwards and figured ebtables was the problem. After removing it , I could connect remotely after reboots. IPtables service is running just fine. I want to use fail2ban , but I need to solve ebtables problem first. So, where sould I start? I couldn't locate ebtables logs . Thanks in advance.

Slow Printing HP-2025dn

Hey All, You know how sometimes you have a problem but you just live with it? Well I've got one of those problems. I have an HP-2025dn printer connected to my home network. When I print a plain text document containing the text, "this is a test", from my wife's Windows 7 machine using the text editor the print job finishes in less than 15 seconds. If I print two copies the second copy comes out so quickly after the first that the first one hasn't time enough to settle in the output tray before the next copy is already exiting the printer output slot. When I try to print from either my 32 bit or 64 bit Centos 6.6 machines it takes two minutes and 30 seconds, 2:30, to print the first copy and 2:15 to print the second copy. Again this is just a plain text message containing the words, "this is a test", printed from gedit. I've just been living with this for a while now but tonight I got out the stop watch and tried to fix this issue. I'm not offered that option when printing multiple copies from gedit so I can't speak to that. I do get multiple print jobs from gedit too. I did some googling but found nothing Linux related but I did find a couple of Windows references to slow printing with this printer on the HP site. They pretty much said that this is not the speediest printer on the face of the earth so stop whining. I don't remember when this problem first appeared but I do remember that I used to be able to print a document from LibreOffice before in less than one minute but now it takes several minutes to print the same document. I know, I'm rambling again. I would be more specific if I had any idea what the problem is. Hi, Today I migrated a server form C6 to C7. The machine is dedicated for a couple of redis daemons. given the traffic etc, we see cpu0 being 100% in use immediately. No problem, had the same thing on the C6 server. So I pinned certain processes/irq's to other CPU's and made irqbalance was monitoring things. That did solve the issue in C6, but not this time. The links below contain the output of /proc/interrupts. The question is: Do I have a problem here or a false positive? I am not sure why nmap is on that host but evidently I had some reason last October to use it from that server. RedHat released sendmail-8.13.8-10.el5_11.src.rpm which includes sendmail-8.13.8-ssl-opts.patch which adds support for disabling SSLv3 and SSLv2 in sendmail.cf But as far as I can see there is no support in sendmail.mc - I can't see how to compile sendmail.mc to get the required line ServerSSLOptions in sendmail.cf Does anyone know how to do this ? -- Andrew Daviel, TRIUMF, Canada Tel. +1 (604) 222-7376 (Pacific Time)

Install Bind with gss-spnego enabled

CentOS 7.1503 installed. Installed Samba 4 from sernet: Version 4.1.17-SerNet-RedHat-11.el7 (to be configured). The samba wiki Readme First page states, "Some distributions like . . . Red Hat Enterprise Linux (and clones), ship BIND9 packages with disabled GSS-SPNEGO option, which is required for signed DNS updates when using BIND as DNS backend on your Samba DC. This circumstance requires to self compile BIND9." Is there any way to use a yum command to install Bind9 with gss-spnego enabled? I'm worried about installing from source and creating future problems when trying to update other CentOS packages that may be affected by the source install of Bind9. Is it safe to obtain a bind9 source tarball for install on an rpm-based CentOS 7 server? If anyone has installed Bind for use with Samba 4 on CentOS 7, please let me know what worked. Thanks for your time and patience.

systemd private tmp dirs

Is there a generic way that processes written to share files with (say) apache in /tmp can figure out that they are running on an OS with systemd and in that case, where the daemon in question thinks /tmp is? For example, twiki has a backup/restore add-in where the backup part is normally done from cron with a command line script but the resulting archives that go in /tmp are supposed to be seen in the web interface where you can choose and restore from them. How should that have been written so the file lands where systemd has remapped /tmp for httpd if it happens to be running on a host with systemd? -- Les Mikesell lesmikesell(a)gmail.com

Hello all, According to [CentOS-announce] Release for CentOS Linux 7 (1503 ) on x86_64: "Debuginfo packages are also being signed and pushed. Yum configs shipped in the new release file will have all the context required for debuginfo to be available on every CentOS Linux install." Specifically, I'm looking for kernel-debuginfo-3.10.0-229.1.2.el7.x86_64, but the latest debuginfo file is kernel-debuginfo-3.10.0-123.13.2.el7.x86_64.rpm, which isn't even the most recent release from 7.0.1406. Is my Google-fu failing me or is http://debuginfo.centos.org/7/x86_64/ no longer the current debuginfo repo? e

Update to 1503 release problem

Hi there, Yesterday I've updated from 7 to 7.1 and today I've noticed on 2 server that postgresql systemd file was replaced with default values. This make postgres to no start and webserver give me problem. This problem was fixed and now all works good. It's normal that on major update I can get this problem? If so, I've ridden release change but I have not ridden about postgresql problem. Someone had the same issue?

Routing setup questions

I am experimenting with routing tables to obtain a little understanding of how things work. I have a kvm hypervisor host (KVM1) with two physical Ethernet nics configured as bridges (br0 and br1). KVM1 br0 is configured with a public ipv4 address [x.y.z.42/24] and br1 is configured with a private ipv4 address [192.168.216.42/24]. A second kvm hypervisor, KVM2, is similarly configured albeit with different IPv4 addresses of course. Packet forwarding is enabled on both hypervisor hosts and both have IPTABLES configured, albeit not for masquerading. Guest systems on each of the two kvm hosts are also configured with two virtual nics, eth0 and eth1, mapped to br0 and br1 respectively. Guests on KVM2 usually have eth0 downed and eth1 configured with a private ipv4 address in this address space, [192.168.216.0/24]. Guests on KVM1 usually have eth0 configured with a public ipv4 and always have eth1 configured with a private address also belonging to [192.168.216.0/24]. The KVM1 hypervisor host has its br1 connected via x-over cable to the br1 port of the KVM2 hypervisor host. The reason for the X-over is to allow matching guests on the different KVM systems to conduct large network transfers between themselves without hitting the LAN. We have a gateway router whose eth1 faces the LAN with the public address [x.y.z.1/24] and the WAN with an address in the form [x.y.A.0/30]. The ASCII diagram below represents the situation. However, it is sufficiently oddball that I consider it a good candidate to discover for myself the practical issues surrounding network routing, a field of knowledge of which I readily admit profound ignorance. My trial is to allow a ping from eth1[192.168.216.221/24] to reach any other public addressed [x.y.z.0/24]i/f on the LAN and successfully be returned. The questions are: 1. What additional (virtual) network i/f(s) needsbe configured to get this to happen? 2. Do any systems require static routes to be preconfigured? If so, which systems and what is that configuration? 3. Is masquerading required or not? My thoughts so far: The default gateway for all of the public hosts on our LAN is eth1[x.y.z.1/24] so it seems necessary that eth1 on GWAY must have some interface that recognizes [192.168.216.0/24] and a route that will send the ping back to the public i/f from which it originates, br0[x.y.z.42/24]. The KVM1 host must have a route to allow [192.168.216.221/24] out onto the LAN via br0[x.y.z.42/24] for all destinations other than [192.168.216.0/24] and route that netblock via br1[192.168.216.42/24]. Independent dual monitors on CentOS 7

Does anyone have the magic incantation required to getting *independent* multi-monitors going under CentOS 7? Ideally under xfce or trinity, but I'm interested about GNOME/KDE observations as well. I'm trying to move my main workstation from CentOS5 to CentOS7 and while the spanned desktop works, not having independent monitors really cuts into my productivity. i.e.: I couldn't care less about dragging things from one screen to another, but not having a 3x3 virtual desktop grid on each monitor independently really sucks. Access Problem after update to CentOS 7.1

Everyone, This morning I did a manual yum update on our a mail server to 7.1 without any incident or problems. A new kernel was installed, and I rebooted after the update. When I rebooted the machine I could not gain ssh access to it from an external ip address. I was able to ssh to this mail server through a different machine on the local network. At first I thought the problem was related to the firewall. I stopped firewalld, and fail2ban, and clear all firewall rules without being able to gain access. I disabled firewalld, and fail2ban. I enabled iptables and started it without a problem, but I could still not gain access. I removed all entries in the host.allow and host.deny files, and this did not make a difference either. On one of the various reboots I tried to use the previous kernel before today's update, but there was no success. I can scan the mail server and reach it without a problem from the internal network but I am not able to reach it from outside the local network. I have the mail server behind a Centso 5.11 machine that is the gateway router for the internal network, and the mail server is nat addressed with it's external ip address to the internal machine. I have had this configuration set up for over 7 years. I tweaked the Gateway router to nat address the mail server's ip address to a different machine inside the network and everything worked perfectly like it should, and then re-adjusted the gateway router again back to the mail server and am not able to gain access from outside the local network. "traceroute" does not get to the mail server from outside the local network, but works fine inside the local network. Bottom line, this does not look like a host.deny, host.allow problem, nor does it look like a firewalld or iptables problem. And it does not appear to be a problem with the gateway server. Is there another feature of CentOs 7.1 that I need to evaluate? Has anyone else had this problem after the 7.1 update? Thank you for your help!!!! Greg Ennis

state of IPSec VPN on CentOS 7: Openswan, strongSwan, RPM packages

I looked in the yum repositories for CentOS 7 and I noticed that there are no packages for any of the major open source IPSec VPN apps - Openswan, strongSwan, etc. I'm pretty sure CentOS 6 had Openswan packages. What is the current consensus w.r.t. building an IPSec VPN "server" (concentrator, whatever) on CentOS 7, that will do site-to-site connections with Cisco hardware at the other end? Is any of the *swan apps still considered the best option for that? Any guidelines w.r.t. IPSec VPN in general on this platform? Thanks. -- Florin Andrei http://florin.myip.org/

C7 hide bottom panel

After much searching I found how to hide the panel. dbus-send --print-reply --session --type=method_call --dest=org.gnome.Shell /org/gnome/Shell org.gnome.Shell.Eval string:'Main.panel.actor.hide();' Works great... However - I also wish to hide the bottom panel or workspace. Anyone know what that is??? I tried Main.Workspace.actor.hide() and that did not work. Thanks, jerry

what updates /etc/localtime?

I see in CentOS 7 that /etc/localtime is a symlink (which seems sensible...) but in earlier versions it is a copy of some file from under /usr/share/zoneinfo. rpm -q --scripts tzdata does not show any postinstall script, so in the non-symlink versions, how does the copied /etc/localtime file get updated with new zone data? -- Les Mikesell lesmikesell(a)gmail.com

Custom ISO based on kickstart

Hello! I would like to shrink my installation media restricted only to necessary packages based on my kickstart file. So I am looking for an application/script which select rpms and those dependencies based on a kickstart file. If just display them that is ok does not need to copy/download anything else. Is there any such utility? I've found a site which helps to select rpms based on my comps.xml (mandatory, default) but I do not want to change my comps.xml but want to create a kickstart file and create a media based on that. After recent reboots we get host1, host2 and host3: # ls -l /sys/class/scsi_host/host* lrwxrwxrwx. 1 root root 0 Apr 9 19:10 /sys/class/scsi_host/host1 -> ../../devices/platform/host1/scsi_host/host1 lrwxrwxrwx. 1 root root 0 Apr 9 08:12 /sys/class/scsi_host/host2 -> ../../devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:03.2/0000:06:00.0/host2/scsi_host/host2 lrwxrwxrwx. 1 root root 0 Apr 9 08:12 /sys/class/scsi_host/host3 -> ../../devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:03.2/0000:06:00.0/host3/scsi_host/host3 I've observed that at different times during configuration of this host we have had varying combinations of the mapping of HBA to an enumerated /sys node. e.g.: host0 host2 host3 or host1 host3 host4 other combinations, etc. This messes up our multipath filtering for weightedpath priority settings. From /etc/multipath.conf: defaults { user_friendly_names no find_multipaths yes prio weightedpath prio_args "hbtl 0:.:.:.* 1 [1-9]:.:.:.* 10" path_grouping_policy group_by_prio path_selector "service-time 0" failback immediate polling_interval 5 no_path_retry 12 } The setting for prio_args fails to set the correct path map topology and priority against an HBA as I can't predict what HBA is what. Consistently iSCSI claims the lowest number but I can't say if that's going to be 0 or 1 a this stage. Does anyone know how to configure HBAs to stay on a fixed enumeration at boot? gnome rebase

Just wondering if there is a way to get the gnome rebase stuff for gnome 3.8 to 3.16 now? (heard it was coming in 7.2) I'm playing with centos 7.1 and would like to use gnome 3.16. is there a way to start playing with that now? Thanks jerry

Locked version repos

Hello Everyone I'm looking into the best way to have locked version repos for my CentOS systems. The systems are all set up with Chef and have a couple different recopies/roles. I'd like to have locked version repos for each role with tested RPMs. Then perhaps quarterly apply any updates. It would be nice to have something showing which updates are available for these locked repos. I'd also want to be able to just push single update RPMs into the repo (think heartbleed) I've had a look at spacewalk and katello, but they seem a bit complicated. Katello seems closer to what I'm looking for with its versioned "Content Views", but I don't see how I could selectively include some new packages in it. It seems like it only handles making new snapshots of the underlying repos. Maybe I'd be better off just setting up some repos on a web server and manually adding packages? I'd probably want a way to symlink packages to prevent disk bloat. video problem since 2015-04-01 update

Hello! No updates for days until 2015-04-01. Then presented with huge steaming pile of updates all at once, apparently related to Centos 7.1 release. Not thinking about it being April Fools Day, I immediately did: yum -v check-update, then yum -v update then rebooted. After reboot, there is a problem with the video. It seems to flicker when the mouse pointer touches the screen edges. Also, sometimes when viewing pages in Firefox, the window becomes partially covered with horizontal black lines. During reboots, before the login screen appears, there are quickly disappearing messages seeming to include references to "drm:9" and some sort of "underrun". In the terminal window, I get a message: ABRT has detected 3 problem(s). Damjan, Glad to hear that worked for you. I don't know if the gnome people can make this very much easier. Different version of different linux distros might invoke hibernate differently. How would they know which one to map to the lid button? Also, some people might want to invoke sleep rather than hibernate. If there were system commands which were persistent over all distros and versions, then maybe they could offer these two mention options (with explanations of each).
