How To Record Sound Being Played

Hey all, I've installed MuseScore on my C6.6 machine. MuseScore is able to generate a midi sounding playback through the speakers of the active score. I want to capture that sound directly to a file without using a microphone. I want to send individual sound files to each of the members of my quartet with their part only. Is anyone using C7 in production yet? (sssd, nss-pam-ldapd, kerberos, etc)

Hi all, Is anyone using C7 in production with LDAP and kerberos? Currently all of my machines run C5 or C6 with nss-pam-ldapd or nss_ldap, with kerberos and pam_krb5 for authentication. Before I fire up a test VM (is it even worth it?) I wanted to check feedback from the community. Cheers! Dan

VLAN issue

Hello all, I have a machine running Centos 6.6 connected to a port on a Cisco Catalyst 3750 series switch. That port is part of VLAN 48. I have VLAN 48 on the CentOS machine too. The IP network on VLAN 48 is 192.168.48.0/255.255.255.0. The address on the CentOS side is 192.168.48.101, the address on the Linux end ought to be 192.168.48.100. When I only bring up eth0.48 VLAN device with the IP=192.168.48.100 I have no connectivity. If I bring it up along with eth0 with another VLAN 48 address assigned to it (for instance, 192.168.48.99) I do have connectivity. Also, strangely enough, sometimes to get things going I have to disconnect the Linux host from the switch - physically detach the wire and reconnect it again. Be that as it may when I just bring up the VLAN by itself I have thus far been unable to get anywhere. Has anybody seen a situation like this? Does anybody have an explaination for it? Thanks. Centos 7 | Rebind ctrl + alt + f# keystroke to application

Hello, I am new to Centos and this mailing list. I have an application (IntelliJ IDEA) which uses the ctrl+alt+f# key combinations to provide shortcuts. The keystrokes are bind to the ttys virtual consoles. Is there anyway to rebind the keystrokes to the application? I tried the following solution (xorg.conf edit) but my PC freezes during boot process. I had to rollback the xorg.conf changes to get the GNOME session. nfs-server in centos 7 - no error message from chown/chmod commands on clients

Hi, we are using centos 7 as an nfs-server. Chown / chmod on all linux clients (RH5,6, Ubuntu 14.04) don't get any errors from unallowed chown/chmod commands. Return-code is 0. e.g. ls -al test.txt -rwxrwxr-x 1 sanderso users 0 26. Jan 15:09 test.txt chown otheruser test.txt echo $? 0 ls -al test.txt -rwxrwxr-x 1 sanderso users 0 26. They used to have a Linux client back in the day but that seems to have been discontinued. Is anybody able to connect to a Checkpoint VPN server from their Linux machine? How to prevent root from managing/disabling SELinux

At work I'm used to tools like eTrust Access Control (aka SEOS). eTrust takes away the ability to manage the eTrust config from root and puts it in the hands of "security admin". So there's a good separation of duties; security admin control the security ruleset, but are limited by the OS permissions (so even if they granted themselves permission to modify /etc/shadow, the standard OS permissions would block them) and system admins control the OS (so they can be root, but can't override eTrust). Ideally this type of separation would be useful in the SELinux world as well. OK, maybe this is a bit of an overkill for my own machines, but then I do have bastion hosts and internal segmented networking at home; I do overkill at times :-) The problem is that I can't see how to prevent this. There are too many access points (not just the CLI tools but the pp files and the /sys tree and I don't know what else). I do note that /etc/selinux has selinux_config_t and /sys/fs/selinux has security_t so maybe a policy that deny's everyone except a new security_admin_t permission to modify those files might work? Has anyone actually attempted this? -- rgds Stephen

General question about understanding PCI passthrough

Greetings - I saw Andrew Holway's post yesterday referencing using PCI passthrough as a solution to someone else's issue. Not being familiar with it, the post made me look into it more to see if it is something to use for my setup. From my research on the web, I have two questions to make sure I understand how PCI passthrough works. 1. If you use PCI passthrough on a graphics card to allow a virtual guest direct access to the graphics card for it use, does the host still have use of the graphics card also? 2. Or, once you pass it to the guest, the host can then no longer use it and has to rely on base level motherboard graphics? It looks from my reading that using PCI passthrough you can make the graphics card available to multiple guest simultaneously, but it seemed to imply that the host could no longer use it. With the box that I am configuring, I was planning on installing Linux Mint (Cinnamon Desktop) as my kvm host, then installing Win7 as a virtual guest. Since I use some mapping software in Win7 it would be nice to be able to use the graphics card via PCI passthrough, but not at the expense of loosing it from the Mint Cinnamon Desktop. However if multiple kvm guests can use the graphics card simultaneously (but the host can not), the maybe I should use CentOS as a very basic host and then make both Mint and Win7 guests. Hi ALL, Sorry for this if it is a stupid question, but: Is it possible to native boot centos from a VHD/VHDX file in a similar way to Windows 8.1? I am hoping to dual 'native' boot Windows 8.1 and CentOS; but then I want to Image the disk to deploy it to other classroom machines. Any help advice would be appreciated. I've had an unsuccessful play with easybcd's neogrub; and I have a working CentOS VM in Hyper-V - but it's the native boot I'm really interested in. Regards Darren

I found this bug fix report http://lwn.net/Articles/616130/ I thought we were not able to get Chromium for C6. Apparently it looks like the work has been already done. Is it possible we (hi Johnny) can get this package into C6? This would be a wonderful addition to CentOS 6. Please and thank you.

Reason for removing php-mcrypt from CentOS 6/7

Does anybody know why php-mcrypt was removed from the extras repo when CentOS 6 came out? I've been going through the archives and I saw plenty of people complain about it but no explanation for the reason. I know it's available in EPEL but I want to avoid third party repos if at all possible. If for some reason it became no longer advisable to use php-mcrypt in production then knowing that reason would be helpful.

SELinux permissions for apache

Hey all, I have a simple php app working that writes some info to a text file. The app will only work correctly if SELinux is disabled. If it's enabled and try to use the app, it fails. It seems that SELinux is denying the app ability to write to the text file. So I tried running the following command: chcon -R -t httpd_sys_content_t /var/www And tried veriying the command with the following: ls -RZ /var/www And everything seems to be in order. For example I see: -rw-r--r--. apache apache system_u:object_r:httpd_sys_content_t:s0 vieworders.php But the app stil won't function correctly unless SELinux is set to off. But, I have staff that are reporting similar problems when trying to access training videos on other sites. Systems with more recent versions of FF fail to play while those people with older versions have no problem. Unfortunately we work in a regulatory regime that requires constant updating and the government contractors providing the updates tend to use Flash as their preferred platform, albeit not on YouTube so the html5 setting is not available in those cases. So, I need some way of overriding this 'fascist nannyism'. Is there a way to stop FF blocking Flash or do I revert to older versions of FF to regain the functionality? Socket behavior change from 6.5 to 6.6

I will try to explain this as best I can. I have two computers; one a Supermicro X10SAE running CentOS 6, the other a very old DOS box.[*] The DOS box runs a CCD camera, sending images via Ethernet to the X10SAE. Thus, the X10SAE runs a Python server on port 5700 (a socket which binds to 5700 and listens, and then accepts a connection from the DOS box; nothing fancy).[**] The DOS box connects to the server and sends images. This all works great, except: When the DOS box exits, crashes, or is rebooted, it fails to shut down the socket properly. Under CentOS 6.5, upon reboot, when the DOS box would attempt to reconnect, the original accepted server socket would (after a couple of connection attempts from the DOS box) see a 0-length recv and close, allowing the server to accept a new connection and resume receiving images. Under CentOS 6.6, the server never sees the 0-length recv. The DOS box flails away attempting to reconnect forever, and the server never seems to get any type of signal that the DOS box is attempting to reconnect. Possibly relevant facts: - The DOS box uses the same local port (1025) every time it tries to connect. It does not use a random ephemeral port. - The exact same code was tested on a CentOS 6.5 and 6.6 box, resulting in the described behavior. The boxes were identical clones except for the O/S upgrade. - The Python interpreter was not changed during the upgrade, because I run this code using my own 2.7.2 install. However, both glibc and the kernel were upgraded as part of the O/S upgrade. My only theory is that this has something to do with non-ephemeral ports and socket reuse, but I'm not sure what. It is entirely possible that some low-level socket option default has changed between 6.5 and 6.6, and I wouldn't know it. It is also possible that I have been relying on unsupported behavior this whole time, and that the current behavior is actually correct. Does anyone have any insight they can offer? [*] Hardware is not an issue; in fact, I have two identical systems, each of which has one X10SAE and three DOS boxes. But the problem can be boiled down to a single pair. [**] I'm actually using an asyncore.dispatcher to do the bind/listen, and then tossing the accept()ed socket into an asynchat. Therefore I am not sure what this avc is telling us. We use Fail2Ban on a number of other Inetenet facing hosts. We have not yet detected anything similar on those, although until this morning's descovery we never really looked for this situation specifically. To check and see if anything was off kilter in the contexts I ran restorcon -Rv on /sbin and on /usr and restarted Fail2Ban. Is there something wrong with SETroubleShoot? I can work around these avcs with a local policy but in the event the issue is not our error this may have wider implications so I am posting the details here. CentOS 6, CUPS and Canon printers problem

I was trying to get a new Canon laser printer LBP-7110CW to work with a CentOS 6 machine. It already has an older Canon multi-function laser MF-4720W which worked fine. Both printers are connected via wireless. The new printer works fine from a Windows machine. The web-based GUI can be accessed from the C6 machine without problem either. However, CUPS cannot "discover" the printer when adding a new printer although it could probe it successfully if I provide the IP address. Neither could the Canon provided cnnst application find the printer on its own. This appeared to be related to iptables since it would discover the printer if I disable iptables. I assume the discovery is done by SNMP so it is a little odd why iptables have to be disabled for the C6 machine to find the printer which is the "server" so to speak. Ignoring that, the new printer still cannot print after being added. A process c3pldrv gets stuck at 100% cpu utilization when a print job is sent. A new c3pldrv process will spawn for each print job and remain for hours if I don't manually kill it. Throughout this time, the printer can be accessed via its web management gui from the same machine and there is no problem printing to the older multi-function printer. So network connectivity doesn't appear to the problem. It also doesn't make a difference whether I set CUPS to use raw socket or lpd. The C6 system was updated to the latest files and the latest UFR-II drivers from Canon was downloaded and installed. Anybody has any experience or clue about what might be the problem?

Kickstarting several *different* setups

I'm currently using kickstart for installing new servers and have run into the following scenario: all the machines will have the same basic setup of packages, however they will each be configured for a specific task. For example, some will be mail-serving machines and won't need things like a web or mySQL server installed. Others will be web servers and do need those packages. So my question is, is there some way do determine via kickstart, what to install on that machine based on some criteria, possibly the IP that's being assigned to it, or MAC address, or something ... Right now I have one single kickstart setup that all the machines are going to use, then I manually install the additional packages one by one, on each machine. It would be helpful if I can somehow tell kickstart to do that. Suggestions?

shutdown -h doesn't

I've got a fresh CentOS 7 test machine, fully patched. The command: shutdown -h now surprisingly does not halt the machine. Instead it reboots it. WTF? I found the following Debian discussion which seems to be the same issue: <https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=766338> However, removing kexec-tools in this case did not solve the problem. Nor does "systemctl poweroff" work. Does anyone else see this? No, nothing is filed in bugzilla yet. Devin

What's up with Firefox/Thundrebird

Hey All, Has anyone had trouble with Firefox/Thunderbird? When I log on if I start Thunderbird first then I can't start Firefox. Clicking on a link in an email fails to start Firefox. If I start Firefox before Thunderbird then hyperlinks in emails open a page in the existing Firefox instance. Other users on this same machine are having the same problems. This has been happening for that last several days. Originally I'd had the idea of trying to setup a cassandra ring on the Amazon AWS free tier. However it seems that neither will run on a t2.micro instance. So I was wondering.. what are some really cheap VPS services that you like to use for one off projects like this and why. I'm looking for dirt cheap as possible. Zone file not written to slave DNS server

I have mostly succeeded in getting master and slave DNS servers operational. Mostly, because the zone file is not written when a zone is updated on the master server when the notify and transfer process happens. The slave DNS server gets the changes to the modified zone, but the slave zone file remains as before. I've found a few tutorials and lots of discussions, many of which talk about the slave's zone file getting written upon transfer, but none mention what configuration option would cause the slave's files to get updated. The master is on a Cantos 6 server and the slave is on a Cantos 7 machine. Any ideas? Emmett

Analog (a) no longer seems to be maintained and (b) rebuilding the old source rpm on CentOS7 ends up with a conflict with a file named /usr/bin/analog that is owned by anaconda. So, taking a step back: is there a better tool for apache log analysis now? One feature of analog that I haven't been able to match with anything else is that you can rsync a tree of log files from a farm of servers into one place and invoke analog with a wild-card to expand all of their names on the command line and it will digest them all without the need to pre-sort in timestamp order. -- Les Mikesell lesmikesell(a)gmail.com

[OT] MS-Windows question - user has remapped function keys.

Forgive the out of band topic but I presume some of you here support MS desktops on your CentOS based services as do we. I am hoping that maybe one of you have run into this at some point. I am unable to find an answer on other forums and my google fu seems to have left me on this subject. I have a user that has somehow managed to remap their function keys so that they no longer work properly on a MS-Winv7pro workstation. Specifically, pressing the function key F4 results in the letter 'S' being displayed. I have absolutely no idea how they managed this, they have no memory of what they were doing when it first happened, and I can find nothing on MS Technet or the usual support forums that recognize this condition. None of the other keys on the keyboard appear affected by the change. The remapping is specific to this user's DOMAIN profile. As we use roaming profiles the effect follows them from workstation to workstation. It does not affect other users that subsequently use the same workstation with their own logons. I believe that this situation is a result of some combination of keystrokes whilst in normal use as it is doubtful that this user would open anything other than their job related programs from desktop icon. I have verified that this issue is not application specific, it affects all of that user's programs, so it must be a Windows configuration issue and I suspect the accessibility functions. Anyone with relevant information or links to appropriate references please reply off list. I feel like I am on a wheel in a hamster cage with this recurring WinBS. DJBDNS: very weird dnscache issue

Hello all, We have put a DNS server online running DJBDNS v1.06 (ndjbdns-1.06-1.el6.x86_64) on a 64-bit CentOS 6.6 server. We have done some limited testing on the machine which it passed - i.e., dnscache was talking to tinydns, the queries went through fine, etc. As soon as we put it online subjecting it to live load the following happened: 1) Within a short time period (about a minute) the dnscache process reached the CPU utilisation level of 100%. 2) The process would then die reporting the following message to the log: dnscache: BUG: out of in progress slots NOTE: Random sampling indicates that at no point sampled did the load exceed 200 requests per second. In tests conducted earlier the DNS server successfully demonstrated speeds in tens of thousands of requests per second. We then proceeded to edit the following parameters in the dnscache.conf as they seemed to be the only ones that seemed relevant: DATALIMIT and CACHESIZE. They are described as limints (in bytes) on the total data memory allocation and cache, default values are 80000000 and 50000000 respectively. Playing with these demonstrated some highly counterintuitive results: 1) Setting the values lower (say, an order of magnitude lower) made the dnscache process run longer. 2) Shortening the relative gap between the two values (for instance, setting DATALIMIT at 52000 and CACHE at 50000) made it run for about an hour vs about 1 minute, load seeming to be about the same. 3) Running it with DATALIMIT not set was possible though it eventually failed anyways. 4) Running it with CACHESIZE not set was not possible at all. So the issue is currently still not resolved and we are stuck. Any advice will be much appreciated. Cheers, Boris.

Hardware raid LSI Megaraid not working since Centos 6.6

Happy new year ! We have a SuperMicro server with a LSI MegaRAID 9260-4i controller. Since Centos 6.6 update (kernel 2.6.32-504), the controller doesn't initialize at boot. Reverting to kernel 2.6.32-431 allows server to boot fine. The server can't boot due to a bug in LSI megaraid module. Boot log ends by a lot of lines: RESET_GEN2: retry=xxx, hostdiag=a4 I tried Centos 6.6 install disk and it also fails to find disks but Centos 7 install disk boot fine. What we have seen is that because of the way the requires are done, it is possible to update some of these without updating others. As an example, using normal tools like yum, you can do 'yum update nss-softokn' and that will allow an older version of nss-softokn-freebl (as an example) to still be installed. This bug is not CentOS specific and an upstream bug is filed here: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1182337 We are therefore going to re-release the packages as they are behaving as expected. Hi all, I could find the 1.1 and 2 repos gently provided by Tru Huynh, but quid of a v3 of the toolset? I've just found that Qt 5.4 requires what's shipped in this v3 (gcc 4.9.1, binutils 2.24) and would prefer installing those from a repo. If not, the sources will rule. Any hint? Regards, -- wwp

After Crash dracut kernel

Hello, I have two identical servers in hardware. I installed both with CentOS. I did LVM snapshots before updating to test LVM merging. On one server I merged all filesystem's during boot because they where mounted when I merged. The other server I did the snapshots, made my installations and configurations and made no merge because it worked on the other server. But I forgot to delete the snapshots and: n the night the server crashed. It rebooted to recovery kernel because it can't find the lvm volumes (module dm_snapshots was missing). Both servers have a difference. When they start one says CentOS (Core) at the end of the loading bar. The other with the crash says sth. about a dracut-Kernel while loading. What do I have to look for? Partitioning scheme on both servers: /boot: sda1 /: lvm /usr: lvm /var: lvm Swap: lvm Thanks in advance Tim

hello, With CentOS 6.6, I try to configure two bonding interfaces via kickstart, but it works only with bond0, I don't understand why I can't configure bond1 the same way. Almost. I've read that, and I can get it to work. I guess I could phrase my question as "Given that the default image for 6.6 and 7.0 do this, how do I make custom media that does it to?" When I make custom media, it only works off an actual DVD. I need help making custom media that has that USB/EFI magic in it.

Hey List, I apologize for how broad this may be, but hopefully someone here can help me out. I need to make custom kickstart installers to be used in the field to install microservers (Intel NUCs, EFI boot) that don't have optical drives and may not have internet connections. I can make a custom ISO just fine using the pretty common steps, specifically following what's here: http://smorgasbork.com/component/content/article/35-linux/151-building-a-cu… My custom kickstart is on the disk, and along with all my packages, and everything works great on a VM as a CD image. The problem is I can't get this to install from USB. I can get it to boot from USB using the isohybrid tool, but the installer fails, can't find the squashfs image. I don't think this is the right way to do it. I know the CentOS 7 (and I believe 6.5) images have a "special" EFI partition that I believe is why USB works with the base image. The problem is I can't really find any information on how this works or how to recreate it. When I run fdisk -l on the image (as a loopback device) I see that the main image is on a partition marked as none, and then there's an EFI partition with start and end points actually inside the first partition? I'm afraid I don't really know what this is doing, or how to go about recreating. Can anyone explain this to me or point me at some documentation? Am I missing something obvious, like say the old Revisor tool that I should be using to make my life much easier? Any help would be much appreciated, -Matt

Hello, What types of tests does the CentOS Development Team do for software in its repositories? Where does it get its test catalog from? I want to create a testing process which is equal to if not more rigorous that the CentOS process for any third party software we use. For example, if I install the php-mysqlnd package from the Remi repository, I want to test it just as carefully as the php-mysql package has been tested before I get it from the CentOS repository. If somebody can point me in the right direction I'd appreciate it. Thanks! David

When will CentOS Publish Errata?

Hello, Currently The CentOS project publishes errata on its CentOS Announce mailing list. In order to import this into a package management system (like Katello on The Foreman), one needs to parse the mailing list and convert it into XML before importing it. This is done to some extent on http://cefs.steve-meier.de/ but some more legwork needs to be done before The Foreman can understand the errata like it does natively for RHN. I have heard rumour that The CentOS project is planning to publish Errata in the same way that Red Hat does, but I haven't been able to find anything on the Internet about this. Does anybody know if The CentOS Project has indeed declared such intention, and when they plan to do this? Side Note: Interestingly enough, I've noticed that EPEL has started to add errata data to their repositories. Thanks, David

2460x1440 video card recommendation

Can someone recommend a video card that's capable of driving a monitor at 2560x1600 or 2560x1440 and just works with Centos 7 without requiring any outside video drivers? I would prefer to stay with the built-in video drivers that are included with Centos 7 if possible; I don't play games and such, so I'm not looking for high performance 3D -- I just want a high resolution desktop. CentOS 6.6 64-bit won't install on a 3 TB disk

Hello everyone, I'm having an issue getting a C6.6 install to work on a 3 TB dual hard drive system, raid 0. I'm hoping that someone here can help. So, I install as normal, but then reboot, and it comes to a grub prompt. Going into the system via Linux rescue, I see that most of the files dealing with the kernel haven't been installed. I asked the maker of the server and he said that they have noticed this happen recently. A solution is to put the kernel files on a thumb drive, and then point the OS to look for them there. I have yet to try it, but is there a better way to deal with this issue that anyone else has done? With respect to RHEL7 the question is: Which are we dealing with, substance or fashion? Or rather, which type predominates? I have no argument against claiming the switch to xfs is substance, not fashion. But then again that change over, however beneficial, is nearly invisible to most of us; subsumed as it is in the overarching effort of setting up a new system from scratch. Once a host is set up its file-system certainly has little further discernible day-to-impact upon anyone, much less end-users. But Gnome3? Systemd? These seem highly intrusive changes that directly affect, often negatively, the daily tasks of many people. Are these substance or fashion? Do the changes they make fundamentally improve RHEL or just do the same things a little differently? How much is it worth to an Enterprise to have a similar desktop metaphor on the workstation as on a tablet? How many desktop workstations will be replaced by the smart-phone, the tablet? I do not have an answer but I suspect, not much and not many. What does systemd buy the enterprise that sysinit did not provide? Leaving aside upstart as a sterile diversion. I am not certain of anything here either. I have learned that my initial resistance to change, any change, is just as emotionally charged as that of the next person. So, I tend to wait and see. But, I do ask questions. If only to discover if I am alone in my concerns. I am but one person and I need the views of others, agreeable or disagreeable to my prejudices as the case may be, so as to form an informed opinion. I am admittedly somewhat concerned about the overall direction of the RHEL product. I fundamentally disagree with their Frozen Chosen approach to key software components. And with the lock-step forced upgrades that are the result. I am not at all certain that back-porting security fixes to obsolescent software is a profitable activity when often for much the same effort, if not less, the most recent software could be made to run on the older release without adverse effects elsewhere. However, I offer no answers and promote no particular course of action, saving only reflection of what is happening now and the price that is paid for it. C-6, Gnome question

Hi all! Using the default Gnome desktop on Centos-6, I keep having difficulty getting the mouse pointer to lineup exactly on the edge/corner of a window when I want to resize the window. It seems that you have to have it on a line exactly one pixel in width, and I'm finding it increasingly hard to do (who, me? getting old? nah!) Wondering if there is a gnome setting somewhere among the myriad settings that could be used to configure the accuracy with which the mouse pointer must be placed so one can grab edges of things. I've dug thru the settings in the Gnome configuration editor, but so far nothing leaps out at me. So I got the technical docs for the card, modified the driver, tested every edge condition I could think of and, when satisfied, made a patch and got it ready for contribution. Well, they changed maintainers while I was doing all that and the new code set was so far off what I was working with that my patch became useless. So I just used my driver for myself, making my effort worthwhile, but I wouldn't have been so stringent in the testing and commentary in the code if I had known what was happening. Lvm snapshot problem

Thunderbird randomly segfaults at startup

Anyone else seeing this? This is happening on a straight "Desktop" install of CentOS 6.6 fully updated. I have made no changes other than installing Thunderbird. Thunderbird will occasionally (10 to 20% of the time) fail to start, and the abrt report indicates a signal 11 (SIGSEGV). I don't see any other reports of this. Is no one using Thunderbird these days? Do abrt reports submitted from CentOS go anywhere useful these days? I saw some discussion a while back, but don't recall the results. logrotate script not working

Hey guys, Got a quick question and I hope this is an easy one! In my /etc/logrotate.conf file I have the following entry: # rotate all of the apache logs -- we'll rotate them here /var/log/mysqld.log { weekly size 50M create 0644 mysql mysql rotate 1 } And from that I would expect the log to rotate when it reaches 50M in size. However I just caught that log weighing in at 356MB!! So how can I get this log file to rotate when it hits 50MB? Any ideas, advice and help at all would be appreciated. Intel NUC? Any experience

Folks The price point of Intel's NUC unit makes it attractive to use as a server that doesn't have significant computational load. In my environment, a USB connected hard-drive could provide all the storage needed. I wonder if anyone has had experience with it, and can answer: 1) Does Centos6 and/or Centos7 install from a USB connected optical drive? or a USB flash drive? I'd prefer to do a NetInstall. If the answer is essentially no, there's no point in continuing. 2) Is the Ethernet connection supported by NetInstall and the subsequent OS? 3) Is it possible to add an additional NIC for possible use as a home router/gateway? If not internally, then via a USB connected NIC? Any thoughts on the subject would be appreciated. David San Francisco

LVM - pvmove and multiple servers

Hi All. Looking for some guidance/experience with LVM and pvmove. I have a LUN/PV being presented from a iscsi SAN. The LUN/PV is presented to 5 servers as a shared VG they all have LV's they use for data, they are all connected via iSCSI. As the SAN I am using is being replaced I need to move onto a new unit. My migration strategy at this time is to 1. Present a new LUN from the new SAN to all machines. 2. Make a PV with the new LUN. 3. Add it to the existing VG. 4. Use pvmove to move all the data from one PV to another. 5. Once the old LUN is empty, complete a pvresize to remove the old LUN. This all seems sound but looking for advice, specifically around the fact that the VG/PV data is being used by a number of machines/servers and the LV's are active on a number of different nodes. All the documentation/examples I can find assume a disk in a server, not a LUN on a SAN being shared by a number of servers. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks Daniel

The oddly named 'UK-Ambassadors' or the narrowly focused language translation mailing lists for instance. That still leaves in excess of a hundred lists. Where should one apply pressure? What forum exists to discuss the economic costs to Enterprises of introducing a marginal, possibly questionable, improvement to an existing UI or common utility? The devel list? The users list? A perusal of the contents of both the Fedora devel list and users list does not give one much hope that such a point of view would be tolerated, much less welcomed. For example, one the the notable contributors to those forums is himself banned from this list. Further, discussions tend to be far, far down in the weeds, if not subterranean altogether, when viewed from the perspective of the question: what is this change, improvement, alteration or deprecation going to cost the installed base to implement? No, no-one presently on this list is likely to have very much of an impact on the folks that are the Fedora project. Their objectives are far removed from the concerns of those tasked to keep automated systems working and invisible to the Enterprises that employ them. The overarching concern of the Enterprise is to employ capital and labour to produce value; and not simply to prove technologies or advance personal or political agendas. Not that the later two situations are uncommon in the Enterprise either. One might, however, consider that the CentOS list is a concentration of people that evidently have some status within a number of Enterprises. And these influential people have chosen not to pay RH for their offering. It might be of some interest to RH in determining why this is so. It might also be the case that this forum, being concerned with issues such as deployment on a large scale and the costs of upgrading RH flagship product, provides valuable insight on how RH's paying customers might be viewing their product as well. After all, because we use CentOS rather than RHEL and forgo the provision of RH's expert advice, then we ourselves and our organisations are a self-identified technologically advanced user community. And we are concerned more with the entire package than with any particular component or detail. If we have concerns and reservations then perhaps RH should have concerns. If we express them here then there is a chance, a small chance but a chance nonetheless, that someone at RH with a view a little broader than that evidenced in most of the traffic on the Fedora devel list, might take notice. Camera doesn't works after "yum upgrade"

Hi, I've launched a "yum upgrade" command on a CentOS6 laptop which has updated nearly 600 packages. Automatic updates were not working because of a conflict on a package. So the laptop is now uptodate but the camera did not works after this. The message is: kernel: uvcvideo: Failed to query (GET_DEF) UVC control 6 on unit 2: -110 (exp. 2). The camera is detected as USB, lsusb shows: Bus 001 Device 003: ID 0c45:646b Microdia I've tryed to boot on alternative kernels but no change: - vmlinuz-2.6.32-504.3.3.el6.centos.plus.x86_64 (which solve a camera problem on my laptop) - vmlinuz-2.6.32-431.29.2.el6.x86_64 - vmlinuz-3.10.63-1.el6.elrepo.x86_64 Any idea about a faulty package ? I've added the upgrade log in attachment but it's quite big. The first four erased item were because of conflicts. Probing EDD (edd=off to disable)

Hi all! Running Centos-6.latest on an AMD six-core Vishera processor. It's been running for a year on that hardware. today I swapped out the video card (from Nvidia 9800GT to Nvidia 460 GTX) hoping to get a little more horsepower, and the ability to run the Folding At Home GPUclient. I know that's an old card, it's a hand-me-down from my son who just replaced it with a new 970 GTX card. So, I got the hardware installed, close up the case, connect all the cables, boot it up and booting stops with this message on the screen in plain text mode: Probing EDD (edd=off to disable) I can reboot and edit the kernel commandline to add "edd=off" at the end then it comes up all the way. I haven't made any changes in the Nvidia drivers, because nvidia's web site tells me it uses the same driver as the 9800GT card did. I'm using the RPMs from elrepo, so it uses akmod to do a rebuild when a new kernel is installed. But I didn't install a new kernel, so it didn't get rebuilt, and I'm wondering if that's the cause of the problem... different card works with the same driver version but may need recompiling due to the different hardware ????? If so, I don't think I know how to force akmod to do the rebuild. Thoughts/or actual knowledge on this would be appreciated. Also, among the googling I did, I found one posting that said that message means an unexpected (DOS??) interrupt occurred, but it did't help me any with how to resolve it. Customising a CentOS 6.6 installation disk

I apologise if this is not the appropriate list for the following issue, but... Is it possible to upgrade the Linux kernel on a kickstart CD? I've changed the vmlinuz and initrd.img files in the isolinux directory from the distro's ISO image; so kernel 2.6.32-504.3.3.el6.i686 now boots from a DVD, and loads the appropriate modules and firmware from the stage 1 initrd.img. However, anaconda (13.21.229) exits abnormally with a DBusException (org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply); possibly because NetworkManager is unable to launch the wpa_supplicant. Do I need to hack Wifi NIC related lines out of anaconda? The reason that I'd like the final kernel version to be running during the install, is that it's needed to compile the low-level driver for a FIPS-140 crypto coprocessor. The target system will be an off-line certification authority system, and will certainly not need Wifi (in fact the hardening procedure foresees removal of most network hardware drivers). I know I could do everything in three stages (initial install - software upgrade - crypto driver install); but being able to do everything in one go would simplify business continuity / bare metal recovery. In the meantime, I'm very happy to have learned something about anaconda / kickstart and so on, which will be very useful in future. If there's a quick fix to the above issues, I'd be happy to hear it. Question about Neighbour Table Overflow.

Hi, all When use Centos 6.5,kernel version 2.6.431, I have continuous messages of "Neighbour table overflow" in messages. I have modified the gc_thresh1(512) , gc_thresh2 (2048) gc_thresh3 (4096) in /proc/sys/net.. path, But the messages occurs occasionally. some forum saied: They are probably realted to a kernel bug where the thresholds are in fact only half of the value that is set. See http://patchwork.ozlabs.org/patch/170385/ --- I didn't figure it out whether it is a bug and it is fixed . Why did this happen? Who can give me hand. Thanks.

dovecot move doesn't work

I'm running centos 6.6 with the default 2.0.9-xxx dovecot.
