I seem to recall that in 6.5 one could simply tell the installer to do exactly that. In any case, somehow I experienced the situation that, even though I had 'deleted' each of the old mount points, the CentOS-7 installer would not reuse the original boot partition space but instead created a new one. I am not sure what was going on or what I did that caused this. In the end I rebooted from the liveCD and used the disk utility to manually remove all of the partitions on the HDD and then re-installed from the minimal DVD. updating pandoc and converting to UTF-8

Hi guys, I need to run pandoc. (http://johnmacfarlane.net/pandoc/installing.html) I did this: rpm -ivh http://dl.fedoraproject.org/pub/epel/6/x86_64/epel-release-6-8.noarch.rpm yum install -y pandoc This is version 1.9.4.1 They are up to 13.1.1. How can I update to the latest? Yum doesn't have anything more that I can see. Also, is there a tool like 'iconv' on OS X where I can convert between encodings? It seems when moving this from OS X to Linux I am getting a few encoding errors when building my project. Thoughts are appreciated. Jason

Mount iPhone ios-8 on CentOS-7

Yesterday I upgraded my Iphone to ios8 for Redphone/Signal and just now have discovered that I no longer can mount the iPhone as a USB device to effect data transfers from the camera roll. Googling around has not revealed any RHEL/CentOS specific fixes although apparently Ubuntu has done something on the matter. CentOS 7 Manual Install

I am following the instructions from the CentOS website to manually install CentOS 7 (http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/ManualInstall) but the guide seems to have some quality issues. I've partitioned the storage fine and now onto setting up RPM. Unfortunately I am at a loss on how to do this. I am doing this on VMware Workstation 10 and the host OS is Ubuntu 14.04. Thanks Parvez

Samba guest no write access after update to samba -3.6.23-12.el6.x86_64

I have an established server initially created with CentOS 6.5 and updated weekly. Last week there was a massive update that I believe upgraded my server to 6.6. I had a number of issues after the upgrade---like my firewall being turned on and blocking all inbound ports. (I have an external firewall.) I've fixed all the issues created by this upgrade except for one. I have a number of samba shares on this server used by some WinXP boxes on my network and two other linux (Fedora) workstations. Since the upgrade, guest/nobody write access no longer works. The smb.conf file is unchanged. The config file below has been unchanged since my initial installation. Anyone know how I can restore guest write access? Guest can read, but not write to the share. Setting up NFS on Centos 6.6

Hello, I'm having an unusual amount of trouble setting up Centos 6.6 as an NFS server. I have already created my exportfs file and run "chkconfig nfs on". When I try to start the nfs service with "service nfs start", I get FATAL: Module nfsd not found. FATAL: Error running install command for nfsd Starting NFS services: exportfs: internal: no supported addresses in nfs_client exportfs: 127.0.0.1:/dir-to-share: No such file or directory [ OK ] Starting NFS quotas: [ OK ] Starting NFS mountd: [ OK ] Starting NFS daemon: rpc.nfsd: Unable to access /proc/fs/nfsd errno 2 (No such file or directory). Please try, as root, 'mount -t nfsd nfsd /proc/fs/nfsd' and then restart rpc.nfsd to correct the problem When I run "mount -t nfsd nfsd /proc/fs/nfsd", I get mount: unknown filesystem type 'nfsd' Does anyone know what I need to do to get nfs working? My thinking is that I need to load a module or two, but I don't know where or how to do this in Centos. I've seen a few posts referencing Ubuntu which ask the user to apt-get particular packages, but its not clear that this is the right approach for Centos. Thank you.

ProFTPD SFTP with SELinux

Has anyone attempted to make SFTP on ProFTPD with SELinux work? I'd like to keep SELinux enabled on this particular system, but I prefer ProFTPD's SFTP solution over OpenSSH. CentOS 6 and Sieve/Dovecot

I've got dovecot & Sieve installed on an internal mail server, without issue. It seems to run ~/.dovecot.sieve scripts without issue. However, when trying to set up sieve scripts with an email client (kmail) the sieve scripts get published to ~/sieve directory. I can't seem to find any way to tell sieve to run all scripts in ~/sieve. It looked as though sieve_before in /etc/dovecot/conf.d/90-sieve.conf might do it but it doesn't expand ~. EG: sieve_before = ~/sieve How do I tell dovecot/sieve to run the scripts found in sieve_dir? Thanks, Ben

apache 2.4.10 error on centos 5.7

Hey guys, I realize this release is a little old. But I'm hoping to get some help with this anyway if that's cool. This is my employer's box and I don't have the option of upgrading it. I installed apr 1.5.1 and apr-util 1.5.4. Then downloaded the source for apache 2.4.10 for a project that I'm working on. I gave these configure flags along with make and install [root@uszwsls00008la httpd-2.4.10]# ./configure --prefix=/opt/apache2 --with-suexec-bin=/opt/apache2/bin/suexec --enable-so --enable-expires --enable-speling && make && make install And when I tried to start apache I got this weird error: [Wed Nov 05 13:55:14.696079 2014] [core:crit] [pid 17290:tid 47424788414864] AH00102: [Wed Nov 05 13:55:14 2014] file mod_setenvif.c, line 637, assertion "is_header_regex_regex != NULL" failed /opt/apache2/bin/apachectl: line 79: 17290 Aborted $HTTPD -k $ARGV I've been googling my head of to get the solution to this error, with no luck. USB / MiFi Mobile broadband devices and CentOS 5 (32-bit)

Has anyone had any experience with the NetZero Stick? The NetZero site says that it is 'Linux' compatible, but gives no detailed information (eg distributations, kernel version, driver name/version, etc.). I am running a stock CentOS 5.11 kernel (2.6.18-398.el5) on my 32-bit laptop (IBM Thinkpad X31, with a non-PAE processor, so upgrading to CentOS 6 is not an option, and no, I don't want to install Ubuntu on this machine). I don't have any flavor of MS-Windows installed. My other options are the NetZero Hotspot (a MiFi device) or Virgin Mobile's Netgear Mingle Mobile Hotspot (another MiFi device). NetZero does not list Linux as a supported O/S, nor does Virgin Mobile -- I am not sure what that means, since the MiFi device are pretty much just like a typical (wired) wireless router, except instead of a Ethernet uplink (eg to a DSL or Cable Modem or something like that) it has a celluar uplink. CentOS-7 re-install

I have booted the system from a live cd. I am looking at a 1.1GB volume that I presume is the /boot partition I created in the installer. Inside I see this: config-3.10.0-123.el.x86_64 /grub /grub2 initramfs-0-rescue-[md5. . .].img initramfs-3.10.0-123.el.x86_64 initrd-plymouth.img symvers-3.10.0-123.el.x86_64 System-map-3.10.0-123.el.x86_64 vmlinuz-0-rescue-[md5 as above] vmlinuz-3.10.0-123.el.x86_64 /grub contains: splash.xpm.gz /grub2 contains: /themes /grub2/themes contains: /system /grub2/themes/system contains: nothing at all So, what does CentOS-7 boot from? I take it that this is not normal? So where are the boot configuration files? Note, that I have only been working on this system through the GUI and I I did was install, update, played around with Gnome3, installed KDE, shutdown and re-installed over the original. So, whatever happened it is not because of anything one can only screw up from the cli. Since the re-install I have not been able to boot from the HDD. Seeing as there are no boot configuration files I can see why booting is a problem. CentOS-7 re-install

Ok, how is this supposed to work? I have re-installed CentOS-7 over the first install. On the "Installation Destination" (JHC can they make these name any more pretentious? What happened to boot disk?) I have exactly one ATA WD5000. I chose 'I will configure partitioning'. On the Manual Partitioning page I see the previous installation file-system. I select each of the mount points and delete them using the (-) button (said metaphor also lifted directly from Apple OSX). This gives me the entire disk back. I then add mount points for /. /swap, /var/log, /tmp (probably unnecessarily but force of habit will out), and /var/spool (no users so no /home). Now when I reboot I get nothing but a flashing underscore in the top left hand corner of the monitor. Nothing else. What gives? -- *** E-Mail is NOT a SECURE channel *** James B. Making a bootable Win7 DVD from an ISO

I would like to create a bootable DVD containing Win7 from an official Microsoft ISO that I have on a CentOS-6.5 box. Is this even possible? If so then how is it done using CentOS? If I must create a Win7 repair disk on a Windows machine then this will be possible, but somewhat logistically challenging. The maillog information would then be recorded in our database for use by our support staff and possibly client staff (although the client access part is still under consideration). I have spend some time looking an scan find one open source package, bounceHammer, and one commercial package, BoogieTools. Does any comments on the effectiveness of either package? I have a test system that I am using to investigate CentOS-7. I note the following difficulty when booting from the Minimal Install DVD. Neither on the initial install nor on subsequent attempts at re-installing CentOS-7 can I set the IPv4 interface to a static IP address. I can configure it but I cannot save the changes. SELinux Alert Browser - Report Bug?

When the ocsinventory-agent (from epel) runs daily to report the host hardware and software to the central server, it triggers an selinux alert about monitor-get-edid-using-vbe mmaping low memory. This is reported in the GUI SELinux Alert Browser which displays a reasonable-looking bug report. But, when I hit the 'submit report' button, it just says that Red Hat Customer Support is not properly configured. That seems wrong on a couple of levels for a CentOS 7 system where the bug is triggered by an EPEL package. -- Les Mikesell lesmikesell(a)gmail.com

Excluding block device from mdadm scan at boot

Using Centos 6, how to I prevent mdadm from assembling arrays from specific block devices at boot? Background: Due to an accident, one of my servers went down and on reboot, got stuck first at NFS statd, then at automount after I disable NFS in single user mode. Only after disabling autofs was the server able to complete booting into runlevel 3. On investigation, it seems that mdadm added two new raid devices md126 and md127 assembled into read-only in degraded raid 1 mode from two unknown device dm-20 and dm-8. My guess is that automount was trying to mount these devices which caused the boot process to fail. After doing some googling, I found the lsblk command and was able to identify dm-20 and dm-8 to be RAID devices created from two lvm logical volumes. These were added to virtual guests as raid devices using whole drives instead of partitioned raid. Unfortunately, I had been unable to find out if it was possible to tell mdadm not to include these drives, the mdadm.conf manpage doesn't appear to list any such option. Is there some way to achieve this or is permanently disabling autofs my only option?

which firefox tab is eating my CPU?

According to top, plugin-containe is eating more than 120% of my CPU? I expect that that is allowed because I have a dual core CPU. Firefox is sloooooooowwwww. I expect that plugin-containe... is running in a firefox tab. How do I non-destructively discover which one? I'm running CentOS 6 and firefox 24.8.0 . I haven't updated firefox in a while because I've read that doing so will cause me to lose all my tabs. I'd like to keep them for a while. DHCP chown

I just installed 6.5 and am trying to bring up DHCP. service dhcpd start fails with "Can't chown new lease file: Operation not permitted" in /var/log/messages I have scoured the Internet, see that others have had the problem, but do not see a solution. I also searched the last 12 months of the mail list to no avail. Can someone please point me to a solution to this problem? I am new to CentOS coming from Debian and apologize if I have missed something. jimc

CentOS 6.6: KVM not found

Dear All, since upgrading from 6.5 to 6.6 I get the following error message when trying to start a VM in virt-manager: Error starting domain: unsupported configuration: Domain requires KVM, but it is not available. Check that virtualization is enabled in the host BIOS, and host configuration is setup to load the kvm modules. Qemu-kvm package is installed, kvm module is loaded and virtualization is activated in BIOS. Does anyone happen to know what the issue is? -- Gruß, Christian

Apache server-status file not found

Hi All, I tried enabling server-status on this one server. I used the same server-status definition that we normally do around here. It usually works. But this time it isn't. What happens is that when I do a GET on server-status and the IP, it results in a file not found error. CentOS 6.6 Bacula-SELinux issue

I updated my backup server to CentOS 6.6 this morning. As usual, I unmounted the current (nightly) tape from the changer before the reboot. Now Bacula complains it cannot access the changer: 3301 Issuing autochanger "loaded? drive 0" command. 3991 Bad autochanger "loaded? drive 0" command: ERR=Child exited with code 1. Results=cannot open SCSI device '/dev/changer' - Permission denied SELinux is denying source context bacula_t from accessing target context tape_device_t. I took a look at the various SELinux boolean values but see none that applies. Has anyone else observed this symptom since upgrading? Dell Dimension 2400 W/Intel 845-G Video

Hey Y'all, I've been Googeling and experimenting for two days trying to find a way to deal with the Intel 845-G video chipset in this Dell Dimension 2400. First, it doesn't have a DVD drive so I have to install from a CD. When I try to boot into the Live CD I get a video error something like, Undefined video mode number: 317. It hangs at the splash screen. I was able to make a minimal install with the Minimal Install CD. I used yum to update and then install the desktop and X server. I managed to get it to bring up the desktop by adding nomodeset to the grub command line and by using the vesa driver but I can only get 640x480 resolution and the image is offset on the screen to the left and down. I tried a netinstall. It was looking good but the video bug crashed that too. I just swapped out the CD drive with another known good drive. Still no joy. I wasn't expecting that to make a difference so I wasn't disappointed when it didn't. There's a lot a cruft on the internet about problems with the Intel 845-G chipset but no solutions that work for me. Centos7 Annoyances

Folks I'm sure the Centos team has done a yeoman's job getting Centos7 ready, and that the Redhat team has done marvels in creating rhel7, but here's a little voice from a personal hobbyist user. Background: ('ve been maintaining several remote servers since Redhat 6 days, migrating from that to Whitebox, then Centos, and things have been running as expected including the current version of Centos6. As an experiment, I've tried to play with Centos7 on an in-house virtual machine (VMWare on Win7), and have encountered a collection of annoyances greater than I've even seen. Below is a note about them. If someone has some elegant solution, I'd love to try, but Centos7 is still unusable for me. 1: Firewall changes The change in firewall technology forced a complete re-do of my scripts which maintain firewalls, respond to attacks, etc. I think I've programmed my way around the issues, but it wasn't easy. 2: Apache changes These were subtle, but again were solved. 3: Service -> systemd The change from object-oriented view of service: (service httpd restart) to function-oriented (systemctl restart firewall) seems to be unnecessary, and counter to the way stuff is generally done in the modern world. Nonetheless, it was possible to solve that with some adaptive script programming. 4) Something with Unknown lvalue 'ControlGroup' in section 'Service' I don't know what to do with this. I constantly get the diagnostic: [/usr/lib/systemd/system/rtkit-daemon.service:32] Unknown lvalue 'ControlGroup' in section 'Service' and attempts to browse the internet for solutions come across barriers that require some paid subscription to view. This is currently a progress-stopper. The messages I see deal with boinc, which does not show up on my system using "rpm -qa | grep -i boinc". 5) Sendmail is out, postfix is in. This is a huge change, since I had lots of scripts that tailored the Sendmail system for spam protection, dealing with SmartHosts that required SMTP-AUTH and others required weird configurations, etc. Whether this is working yet I don't quite know, but it seems the scripts can accommodate the change. 6) Installation I have no idea why, when using the net-install, one must explicitly turn on the network. It seems unnecessary. 7) Lack of 32-bit support I think I understand this. After all, 32-bit machines may become "unusable" when the clock overflows, but isn't that a few years away, and couldn't some solution be found, even if kludgy? Some of the 32-bit hardware was of very high quality, and still runs perfectly. I'd hate to spend a few hundred dollars each to replace all those systems. 8) And more ... I haven't got a server or desktop running to my satisfaction yet, so I don't yet know what pitfalls await. Any advice would be appreciated. David in San Francisco

I am using SSSD to get user AUTH from a backend Samba4 AD/DC. For Linux clients sssd.conf is configured to query Samba4 AD based on LDAP/Kerberos i.e. the Linux clients have not done a Domain join. Physical console logins -- things are working fine with changes to NSS and PAM (tool authconfig) for domain User AUTH on Linux and Windows clients. However, I want to restrict access to certain machines to users of a specific group e.g. HR. I guess this is possible on Windows clients with group policies. Is the same possible on CentOS (Linux) workstations. TIA, -- Arun Khan

I recently installed Centos 7 on a new desktop, and I intended to put XFCE on it, but I think I made a mistake by choosing the Legacy-X group, and now I'm puzzled as to what I have. I thought my first boot would be into runlevel 3, but I got a gui that looks like an odd mix of Gnome 2 and KDE. The anaconda logs show a group install of gnome-desktop and legacy-x, plus a lot of KDE stuff. The mix looks ok, and handles my dual monitors fine, but there are some prefs that simply don't work -- one important bit is that my monitors mostly (but sometimes) go into power save, and I cannot find an option to do it manually. One option now is to install XFCE, but I don't know how that works. Maybe better to uninstall gnome-desktop and legacy-x and just go with XFCE, and I'll wind up with a coherent environment. Btw, I've tried both Gnome 3 and xfce on an old machine in fedora, and much prefer XFCE. (Luckily, we have choices.) Any guidance?

Evolution 3.8.5 imap iCloud will not connect

There is a problem in Evolution 3.8.5 due to changes icloud made to their servers. It disallows imap connections due to authentication issues. The following link to gnome.org indicates that a patch is available for Evolution 3.10 (the problem does not occur in 3.12). https://mail.gnome.org/archives/evolution-list/2014-October/msg00113.html Milan suggests "Ask your distribution to use the patch from the [1] and provide an update for you." Is there any chance of this for Centos 7, as Evolution is currently rendered inoperable with iCloud imap. lost a lvm after update to Centos6.6

Hello All, the update to Centos6.6 got interrupted on a laptop. I then did this: package-cleanup --cleandupes yum-complete-transaction and remove and reinstall the latest kernel. I now get an error message when booting: /dev/mapper/vg_jvermeulen-lv_home does not exist. I can boot into single user mode and run all commands. in fdisk -l .....lv_home is not listed. How can I re-add this? I do have a backup of this machine. Thanks for any help. X2go server on Centos7, any success?

Folks I have been unable to get X2go to work on a Centos 7 server. I have tried both the out-of-the-box GNOME desktop and the Xfce as well. In both cases, the view from the client is that the screen starts to appear, then goes away. On the server, I see the following messages in /var/log/messages (I have erased the user name and replaced it with XXX). The server is running as a virtual machine on a Win7 system (using VMWare), and the "YYY" mentioned below is the Win7 user. "Goat" is the name of the server. We moved from Sendmail to Postfix when RH made Postfix the default for new installs on EL6. For a while it was somewhat confusing. But, after a brief if painful period of adjustment, the ease of maintaining Postfix when compared to the complexity and contortions necessary to get similar things done in Sendmail more than justified the pain of converting. This past year for example we added DKIM and SPF to our outgoing hub and it took virtually no effort to do it. For now I have managed to get ZFS built and installed on the test box. This afternoon I will try and get the entire file-system converted to ZFS on a LUKS substrate and see if that works. ZFS Scrubbing (might be off topic)

Folks I have a ZFS file system. It seems to be scrubbing too often. As I type, it's 5 hours into the process with 36 hours to go, and seems to be doing it several times a week on a slow drive. I cannot find an option to control the frequency; crontab has no references. Any clues? David

Right way to install phpMyAdmin through Nginx and PHP-FPM

First I know this is not a list for PHP or Nginx setup or something else but I'll give it a try and ask here for support I'm running a new server with PHP 5.5.18 and Nginx 1.6.2 through FPM/FastCGI. The server is working fine since I have other websites running on it. What is the right way to configure the server in order to serve phpMyAdmin as any other site?

No X with new 6.6 kernel

Hey Y'all, After upgrade to 6.6 my gui will not start. The problem is probably related to the dusty old video card I've got in this crusty old machine. 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation G73 [GeForce 7600 GS] (rev a2) I've got the proprietary drivers installed. Normally when I update my kernel the video module is rebuilt automagically. That probably doesn't work with the new kernel. I can get the GUI running by booting into the previous kernel version. Cannot get php errors to go to a file

Using basically the same setup that works on C6, I have a C7 site. in PHP.INI, it says "error_log = /tmp/php_errors.log" PHP errors do not go there (or anywhere). 1. Apache has write perms to /tmp 2. I have restarted httpd since changing php.ini 3. The base php.ini is from the development version in /usr/share 4. Selinux is disabled. Ideas? -- -- Steve

Hey guys, Sorry not sure what's wrong with this statement. I've tried a few variations of trying to exclude the /var/www directory. [root@224432-24 apr-1.5.1]# find / -name "*httpd*" -type d $ ! -name www $ /usr/lib/httpd /usr/lib64/httpd /var/www/vhosts/johnnyenglish/httpdocs /var/www/lpaddevbkp/alchemist/namespace/system-config-httpd /var/www/lpaddevbkp/httpd The ultimate intention once I get a suitable find command is to delete all references to httpd. I'm trying to do a clean install of apache 'the company way'. But before I do that I want to get rid of the apache that was there. I've already queried the rpm database and did a yum remove of the apache packages. So where I'm I going wrong with the above statement? Looks right to me! Before I get to that point I wish to experiment with zfs. I have a couple of questions: Q1. Finding a good install tutorial for zfs on CentOS-7 has so far eluded my google-fu. Would someone be so kind as to provide either recommendations for same or direct how-to instructions? And any gotchas. CentOS 6.5 RHCS fence loops

Hi Guys, I'm using centos 6.5 as guest on RHEV and rhcs for cluster web environment. The environtment : web1.example.com web2.example.com When cluster being quorum, the web1 reboots by web2. When web2 is going up, web2 reboots by web1. Does anybody know how to solving this "fence loop" ? master_wins="1" is not working properly, qdisk also. Just a heads up, if anyone is doing QT development with the EPEL RPMs, the update from RHEL 6.5 to 6.6 breaks the current qt5 RPMS. In fact, I had to uninstall qt5 to perform the update. I've submitted a bug report upstream, so hopefully it'll get resolved before too much longer. The first error I see at console is this /dev/root: read failed after 0 of 4096 at 27522957312: Input/output error /dev/root: read failed after 0 of 4096 at 27523014656: Input/output error Couldn't find device with uuid vSbuSJ-o1Kh-N3ur-JYkM-Ktr4-WEO2-JWe2wS. Cannot change VG vg_devserver while PVs are missing. Consider vgreduce --removemissing. Then following the suggestion from the previous command results I run this other command vgreduce --removemissing vg_devserver but again got this error: WARNING: Partial LV lv_root needs to be repaired or removed. There are still partial LVs in VG vg_devserver. To remove them unconditionally use: vgreduce --removemissing --force. Proceeding to remove empty missing PVs. so I change the command to the one suggested but once again another message Removing partial LV lv_root. Logical volume vg_devserver/lv_root contains a filesystem in use. so at this point I don't know what else to do,can any give me some ideas or help? Don't kill me if is something basic I'm not a Linux Admin or a Linux Advanced User just a developer trying to setup their development environment. How I can get this done? What I'm doing wrong? I have an SIIG SC-SA4011 (V1.0) SATA controller that doesn't appear to come up. Hi Guys, I am encountering this bug: https://bugs.centos.org/view.php?id=7656 I put in the CentOS 7 DVD and it starts to install and hangs with starting x. The suggestion was made in the bug report to boot using the 'kernel-ml' and to be honest I don't know how to do that. I build a machine that has 4 video cards in it. (2 x nVidia Geforce GT 970 and 2 x Sapphire Toxic R9 270x). Can anyone give me a hand? Jason

Upgrading to CentOS-7 on a new partition

I would like to upgrade a CentOS-6.5 home server to CentOS-7 on a new partition. What is the simplest way to achieve this? I would like to be able to boot into either version of CentOS until I am sure the new version is running OK. tinydns exceeds "holdoff time" on startup under CentOS 7

Hello listmates, Somehow or other my DNS services that are part of the ndjbdns-1.06-1.el7.x86_64 package would not start properly at startup. Per your suggestion I used virt-manager to open the guest and added a hardware device. I selected the option "Select managed or other existing storage", browsed for the virtio-win.iso and set the Device type to IDE CDROM with storage type 'raw'. I have barriers enabled, I will try disabling them (I have battery backup on the RAID controller, so it should be ok). Then again, I have barriers enabled on the other, very similar box too, and I hit 2GB/sec there, so I don't think that's the main factor. Still, will test. Centos 6.5 - Fping - SE Linux - Missing type enforcement (TE) allow rule

Hi gents, I seem to have a small issue with fping and Observium(a monitoring solution). The particular VPS I'm using does have SELinux enabled and it seems to be causing issues when the httpd process is attempting to use Fping? Here is what I know so far : Output from "audit2why -a" : --------------- type=AVC msg=audit(1414265994.125:6744): avc: denied { create } for pid=8968 comm="fping" scontext=unconfined_u:system_r:httpd_t:s0 Was caused by: Missing type enforcement (TE) allow rule. You can use audit2allow to generate a loadable module to allow this access. --------------- Which does seem to confirm that something is wrong between httpd and fping. I then ran "audit2allow -M fping-httpd < audit2allow" which did create both the .te and .pp files. The issue is that inside the .te file, I have a warning saying that the rules already exists! Which does make sense since I had to allow those particular function for the Mysql connection to function properly. --------------- .te file : "module fping-httpd 1.0; require { type httpd_t; class capability net_raw; class rawip_socket create; } #============= httpd_t ============== #!!!! This avc is allowed in the current policy allow httpd_t self:capability net_raw; allow httpd_t self:rawip_socket create; " --------------- Is the "Missing type enforcement" related to all of this? I really don't want to disable SELinux and would rather learn to actually use it properly. Thank you!

C7 : Firewalld

Being a fan of IPtables and dreading the eventual transition to Centos 7, I wondered if in C7's firewalld an interface can be assigned to a single zone or to multiple zones such as 'private' and 'trusted'. For example interface em1 having both trusted and public zones assigned to it. If multiple zones per interface are permitted presumably one can segregate traffic by IP range ? -- Thank you. Paul. Q. LUKS or ecryptfs-utils ?

I am now investigating encrypting our IMAP user spool files. Does anyone have experience with handling encrypted data stores using either or both of the subject methods and would care tio share their observations? Which is the preferred method (I know: it depends, but on what?)? What administrative pain does each cause? Our IMAP host is a KVM guest so spinning up a duplicate and simply copying the data to an encrypted device or filesystem is not a very big deal. We can live with manually mounting the file system and providing a pass-phrase at boot. we are also looking into a semi-auto USB based solution to that issue. -- *** E-Mail is NOT a SECURE channel *** James B. What is a client certificate?

A very ignorant question, sans doute. I get my certificates from cacert.org, to whom I am very grateful. I follow what I take to be the official procedure, first creating <server>.key and <server>.csr on my server and then getting <server>.crt by going to Server Certificate=>New at the cacert site. I then place the key certficate *.key in /etc/pki/tls/private/ and what I call the client certificate *.crt in /etc/pki/tls/certs/ . But I notice that there at www.cacert.org there is a Client Certificate folder as well as the Server Certificate folder, and it seems that one can create a "client certificate" there. My quesion is: what is the purpose of this second client certificate? And while I am on the topic, what are the recommended file permissions for PKI certificates? I was a little surprised to find my <server>.key has permission 640, while <server>.crt has permission 644. The folder /etc/pki/tls/private/ on my server does not seem to have any special security; it is owned by root but can be opened and listed by anybody. As you can probably guess by now I am working my way down through my outstanding issue list trying to get as many deferred items closed out as I can before the next security storm hits. We have a Win7pro KVM guest that has been giving us networking issues since it was created. The last problem was that it was picking up its network address from the virtio DHCP service, with predicable results. This turned out to be an issue with how the virtual nic was configured (it was using NAT instead of the br0 bridge. We have adjusted the settings on the guest so the the nic is configured as a shared device / br0 / Device Model=virtio. Now after it boots the thing says that it does not have a driver for Ethernet adaptor at all. Is there a different setting for the model that I should be using? I have to point out that this thing was originally installed from cd-rom and then updated from the internet. So at some point it must have had a working network connection.
