Centos laptop support

Today I found myself in need of a laptop to run Centos on. And that simple statement led to an all-day odyssey. My original plan was to purchase a laptop and install Centos 6 on it. I went to Staples and tried booting it on every model of laptop that they had in the store. They all come with Windows 8 installed, and for the edification of anyone who doesn't know this (I didn't until today) you have to conduct a real song and dance to get to the bios settings on one of those things: boot windows move mouse pointer to the top right corner of the screen move down to setting menu (gear) that shows up click on power off icon Hold shift key and left-click on "restart" it goes to the troubleshooting screen click on advanced troubleshooting click on "change uefi settings" now we get to the bios set secure boot off set legacy boot priority And then you can boot from a USB flash drive. *whew* (It's easy to put it back afterward, just go into the bios and tell it set to defaults, save and exit.) Anyway, I tried booting a Centos 6 Live CD image on a usb flash drive on every single model of laptop they had in stock and no joy on any of them -- they either hung altogether, started booting and hung at some point along the way, started a continuous cycle of start booting, reset, start booting again, or kernel panicked. Every last one. I then tried a Centos 7 Live CD image on another usb flash drive and then the third machine that I tried it on (Lenovo Ideapad S400 Touch) worked. So I bought that one and have now wiped Windows off of its hard drive and installed Centos 7 so it now looks and acts like a real computer. I never would have thought that it would take all bloody day to purchase one laptop. (And I'm going to be having nightmares about that Windows Boot Manager thing.) Since it has now become amazingly difficult to get a laptop if you're not planning to use Windows, at least around here, I'm wondering what the rest of you fine folks do when it comes to purchasing a laptop? virsh list hangs

I followed the wiki[1] to create a KVM virtual machine using bridged network on CentOS 6.5. It seemed to work fine on initial setup. However, after a boot, it doesn't auto-start the VMs, or at least, something has to timeout (a *very* long time, on the order of 15--30 minutes) before they can be started. Shortly after boot, if I go into "virsh", then do a "list", it just hangs. Likewise, if I go into "virt-manager", it just hangs "connecting". Kernel version is: 2.6.32-431.29.2.el6.x86_64 Relevant package versions: libvirt.x86_64 0.10.2-29.el6_5.12 libvirt-client.x86_64 0.10.2-29.el6_5.12 libvirt-python.x86_64 0.10.2-29.el6_5.12 python-virtinst.noarch 0.600.0-18.el6 virt-manager.x86_64 0.9.0-19.el6 virt-top.x86_64 1.0.4-3.15.el6 virt-viewer.x86_64 0.5.6-8.el6_5.3 qemu-img.x86_64 2:0.12.1.2-2.415.el6_5.14 qemu-kvm.x86_64 2:0.12.1.2-2.415.el6_5.14 CPU is a Xeon E3-1230v3. I have the virtualization setting enabled in the BIOS. I googled on this, and saw a bunch of talk about two years ago regarding issues with the libvirt packages having a deadlock bug. A little help with default resolution of CentOS7 and Panasonic TV

Hi, everyone. tldr: How in the heck do I force CentOS7 to boot to a low/conservative GDM resolution? Hoping someone can lend a hand getting CentOS7 to sync to my Panasonic Vierra 42' TV. It worked fine in CentOS6.5 but since installing I boot to a GDM background with no login prompt. can I check the mac address on DHCP from my command line

Hi, I have an interesting problem. I want to be able to verify that my hostname, ipaddress, and mac address are correct in the DNS/DHCP. I have the values, how do I compare. I am able to use NSLOOKUP for the hostname=ip confirmation How do I do the ip addresss = mac address comparison I tried arp and a few other things. Almost everything on google says either to logon to DHCP (which I do not own) or use arp, which is not giving the desired results. I provided the mac address, ip address, and host name I want to find out if a missed entry might be causing the pxe boots and network problems I am having to fail. Dan

CentOS 7 remove items on screen

How can I remove the four items on screen? Applications, Places home trash from the command line? I'd prefer to remove the top panel and bottom panel all together if possible, but they can stay - I just don't want anything showing on the screen. searched all around for kiosk mode gnome3 etc.. not finding anything good for CentOS7. Was able to do this in CentOS 6 can't believe they took out functionality. Any way to "not" have those menu items and not have icons on the main screen? Thanks jerry

CentOS 7 kernel console under KVM?

Is there a way to get GRUB2 and the kernel to run a "serial" console under KVM? I'm running a Fedora 20 desktop, with libvirt-managed VMs. When I run a CentOS 6 VM, I can set both the boot loader and kernel up to use ttyS0 and get a console compatible with "virsh console". When I try the same with a CentOS 7 VM, it doesn't work. If I set it to ttyS0, I just don't get anything. I read that I should use hvc0 instead (no idea how to set the boot loader to use that); when I set that on the kernel command line, the kernel crashes during boot with: kernel tried to execute NX-protected page - exploit attempt? CentOS 7 and nfs

First time firing up NFS on a CentOS 7 box. Under 5 or 6, service nfs start started *everything* (rpc, etc). Based on trying that, and doing some googling, is it the case that it does *not* do everything in 7, and I do have to start the pieces manually? mark

I built my CentOS 7 server with a raid 1 mirror. I found the raid setup in the installer to be confusing and very non-intuitive. patching bash 2.05b for Shellshock

Hello all, Amongst a number of modern CentOS machines we have this one RHEL 3 machine (don't ask me why:) and on it we have bash 2.05b. I was trying to compile a version of bash for it that would be Shellshock-proofed. To do that, I downloaded a copy of the code from the GNU along with all the 13 patches, applied the patches, compiled the code and installed the executable. All vulnerabilities appear to be fixed with the exception of CVE-2014-7187. Does anybody know why this may be? Thanks. Boris.

VNCServer Startup Config

hi all, I've inherited a server with CentOS 6.4 the VNC Server starts up with the OS and its screen resolution is set to 800x600. I found that I can set the resolution by specifying the -geometry switch, but I can't find where the call to start the vncserver is set in order to change it. umount problem

I've got a usb HD mounted, and it has been mounted since the weekend, and has been kept busy during that period. now I"m done with it an want to umount it, but neither umount nor the on-screen icon (when right-clicked) will let me do it: it is /dev/sdd1, mounted as /media/seagateusb. when root tries to umount it we get this: # umount /media/seagateusb umount: /media/seagateusb: device is busy. (In some cases useful info about processes that use the device is found by lsof(8) or fuser(1)) lsof | grep sdd1 gives this: $ lsof | grep sdd1 jbd2/sdd1 26358 root cwd DIR 253,1 4096 2 / jbd2/sdd1 26358 root rtd DIR 253,1 4096 2 / jbd2/sdd1 26358 root txt unknown /proc/26358/exe lsof | grep /media/seagateusb yields no output. I know, I could reboot, but I'd just as soon not. OT - httpd/conf.d include questions - allowing only some addresses

My web searching is not finding out the answers to this, so I turn to you all here. I am trying to NOT modify my httpd/conf/httpd.conf file, and only make changes via includes. I have done that with a 00-init.conf where I set things like servername and serveradmin. Now I want to move my allow and denies to a 01-allow.conf include. I tried: <Directory "/var/www/html"> Order allow,deny deny from all </Directory> as that seems to be what is in the default conf, but I see in the error_log: [Tue Oct 07 08:51:58 2014] [error] [client 208.83.67.156] Directory index forbidden by Options directive: /var/www/html/ And maybe this is not the right restriction, because when I make this change directly in the default httpd.conf, I still can get to the default web page. Now on to the 'allow' statement. All syntax examples I have seen for it follow: allow from 1.1.1.0/24 1.1.2.0/24 2400:cb00:2048:1::/64 and soforth. That is each range separated by a space. But potentially I have 18 ranges to specify, and at least named makes it easy with each range on its own line ending with a ';'. For now I am only putting 2 ranges in, but how does one set up a longer list of allowed ranges? thanks

OH NO, Something has gone wrong!

Hi all! I'm setting up C7-64 as a VM using VirtualBox, on a Windows host. as soon as I install the vbox Guest Extensions and reboot, when I log in next time I get a white screen with a frowny face that says "Oh No, Something has gone wrong!" and then "A problem has occurred, and the system can't recover, please log out and try again." Sounds like a VirtualBox problem to me, but was wondering if anyone here had seen it and maybe knows what's going on. I am doing an install of a mysql system, and decided that I needed to change some things like host name. So I have to go back to square one with the mysql setup, but can't find any instructions for this. I TRIED: mysql_install_db And it did SOMETHING, but mysqladmin -u root password 'mypass' failed with: mysqladmin: connect to server at 'localhost' failed error: 'Access denied for user 'root'@'localhost' (using password: NO)' I tried 'yum reinstall mysql' and that did not help.

trying to kickstart a vm guest from my datastore

I have a new ESXi server (5.x), and trying to load some VM guests on there. I have the guests configured, but when I try and boot from ISO image, the graphics are so bad it is futile. No worries I normally use kickstart anyways. Because the ESXi (on the same network as my physical servers) cannot talk to the PXE server. But works fine on the network (I can ssh/scp in and out of the ESXi server). i am unable to kickstart from the network. As this is a blade, there is not DVD access. But I have a kickstart file, an iso image on my datastore. Really I have two questions: 1. how do I "test" or troubleshoot WHY ESXi cannot reach the pxe server. The mac addresses/ips/hostnames of the VM guests are in DNS and DHCP. 2. How do I kickstart a VM guest from the datastore kickstart file/iso image? D.

Hey all, I noticed that my puppet server running CentOS 6.5 was acting a little pokey. So I logged in and did what well just about anyone would've done. And ran the uptime command to have a look at the load. And it was astonishingly high! DHCP with ipv6 tunnel

I'm completely confused here and I'm hoping someone here has a setup they're willing to share, or help me configure things on my end. My connectivity is through Comcast, who unfortunately, does not offer ipv6 in my area. My connection goes like this: Comcast -> Motorola Surfboard Cable Router -> CentOS 6.5 server The CentOS server is multi-homed and manages the internal 192.168.x.x network by offering DHCP and firewall service (NATting and others.) DNS lookups are going to Comcast's servers. I have an IPV6 tunnel through Hurricane Electric (www.tunnelbroker.net) The tunnel is configured and is up and running on the CentOS server. I can ping several IPV6 addresses from it just fine: ping6 -n ipv6.google.com PING ipv6.google.com(2607:f8b0:400f:801::1006) 56 data bytes 64 bytes from 2607:f8b0:400f:801::1006: icmp_seq=1 ttl=53 time=109 ms 64 bytes from 2607:f8b0:400f:801::1006: icmp_seq=2 ttl=53 time=109 ms 64 bytes from 2607:f8b0:400f:801::1006: icmp_seq=3 ttl=53 time=106 ms ^C --- ipv6.google.com ping statistics --- 3 packets transmitted, 3 received, 0% packet loss, time 2436ms rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 106.905/108.723/109.756/1.317 ms What I'd like to do now is have DHCP offer ipv6 addresses as well. Problem is, I don't know how to configure it properly using the information given to me by Hurricane. I have my client address which is what the CentOS tunnel interface is. Then I have a routed /64 and /48 prefix which I *think* is what I'm supposed to use for my internal network (according to their info popup window) but I don't know how to configure DHCPd to use that and then route through the ipv6 interface. So does anyone here have a tunnel from HE and are using DHCP on an internal network handing out ipv6 addresses? Any suggestions of how to configure dhcpd6.conf? Thanks all. Ash

Centos 7: Remove Gnome from GDM options

When you click on the gear icon on the GDM login screen, it provides a list of the available desktop environments so you can pick between them. Since I exclusively use Mate on this computer, how can I remove the other options from that menu? Earlier today when I logged in the machine decided on its own that what I really wanted was Gnome Classic, so I had to log out to change it back to Mate, then log in again. VMWare Workstation Guest Keep Crashing

hi all, I've inherited a CentOS 6.4 machine that runs VMWare Workstation 9 which in turn hosts a Windows SBS 2011 guest. the problem is that the Windows guest keeps crashing, and I have no idea why. it was working fine for a while but recently started crashing after a day or two of operation. as a total Linux/CentOS noob, I have some questions: 1) is it safe to assume that since the guest crashes, but not the host, then the issue is with the Windows setup and not the CentOS? 2) any ideas how I would go to find the problem? 3) I understand now that a better virtualization would be KVM or Xen. any word of advice on which is better if the host machine need only run the guest OS and back it up? I have a full disk image file (courtesy of ddrescue), and need to mount one of its partitions. I suppose I should have just extracted the single partition when I was using ddrescue, but right now I have the whole disk instead, and no disk space left to re-do the extraction (in fact I won't be able to use the system where I did it for several weeks, so I'd love to be able to mount just the partition from the image I have). Mounting LUNs from a SAN array - LUN mappings to devices in /dev/ - are they static?

Hi All :) I am currently involved in a project in which there is a SAN array (Sun Storagetek 2540) which exports LUNs for some servers with Centos 5.2 x86. I will be performing a migration to Centos 5.9 x86_64 in some time and am gathering needed info now :) I am trying to find the place in the OS where there is the information about LUN mappings to /dev/ devices. For example on array level I have an exported LUN with number 8. I see it on one of the servers with lsscsi as: # lsscsi | grep '7\:0\:0\:8' [7:0:0:8] disk SUN LCSM100_F 0735 /dev/sdj As I said I need to perform migration of the OS to Centos 5.9 x86_64 and am curious where from does the mapping scsi device 7:0:0:8 <-> /dev/sdj come? I have some complex logical volume (Veritas Volume Manager) setup based on /dev/ disks (which are derived from LUNs imported from the array) and will need to recreate it on destination servers. My coworker said that udev may be assigning the /dev/sdj (and other) identifier so I checked this. In /etc/udev/rules.d/* I see rules for scsi subsystem (sysfs type 0 is "disk"): ACTION=="add", SUBSYSTEM=="scsi", WAIT_FOR_SYSFS="ioerr_cnt" ACTION=="add", SUBSYSTEM=="scsi_device", SYSFS{type}=="0", RUN+="socket:/org/kernel/diskres/uevents" ACTION=="remove", SUBSYSTEM=="scsi_device", RUN+="socket:/org/kernel/diskres/uevents" So I do not see anything which could answer my question. There have been other rules for different sysfs types but I think they are not relevant in my case. In sysfs in /sys/bus/scsi/devices/7:0:0:8 I found: # ll block\:sdj lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 0 Oct 4 17:57 block:sdj -> ../../../../../../../../../../block/sdj Where else can I look for the LUN<->/dev/ device mapping rules? How are the LUNs mapped to operating system devices? Is there a way to add a static mapping so that also on a new server after attaching SAN array LUN number 8 will be visible as /dev/sdj? I think that there is a possibility that on a new server mentioned LUN will be visible as a different /dev/sd? :( That could potentially break my logical volume setup on the destination server. I have installed CentOS 7. I added "biosdevname=0 net.ifnames=0" at install time. I still have a network name of en01 and not eth0. How do I get eth0 when viewing ifconfig? dmesg | grep eth0 show its being detected, and being renamed. systemd-udev renaming eth0 to en01... I then looked in /etc/udev and dont see anything of value... Thanks, Jerry

Hi folks, I searched the list for LibreSSL and found only one mention of it! Has anyone gotten this working? I have it compiling no problem, but removing OpenSSL is another story of course. gpg can't decrypt message

Hey guys, Having a little gpg issue I was wondering if someone could help me with. A friend of mine sent me an encrypted message. So I searched online and found a a set of keys that correspond with his email address. And imported them. Firefox fonts

I recently installed some courier fonts. I'm not sure whether Firefox will use them. They are not showing up on Firefoxes font chooser. Do I need to restart Firefox for them to show up? How do I discover what font Firefox actually uses for something? I've found Inspect Element, but I'm pretty sure Firefox is substituting. How do I discover what was substituted? I can hardly justify criticising someone who has limited time and infinite demands thereon turning to the experiences of others as documented on the web and helpfully indexed by Google et al first; before attempting to find the answer in one of the obscure and obfuscated texts that pass for technical documentation in most fields. Computers simply being the one I encounter most frequently and which happens to concern this issue. I use man pages and find most of them helpful. But, frankly, they are of more use as an aide memoire than as a source of instruction. I defy anyone who has never built an RPM package to build one from scratch using nothing more than their source code files and the relevant man pages. If they can get so far as to identify those to begin with. The existence of technical mailing lists, such as this one, is a mute testament to the deficiency of official documentation. No matter how good it may be a technical document will always be incomplete and subject to misunderstanding. One needs context to grasp what another is trying to convey. The experience of others provides that. As to the OP. Well, you have to start some place. "power outage"-save / like embedded systems

I would like to setup a small system based on CentOS6 "power outage"-save as possible. The hardware will be switch off by pulling the plug. To accomplishing this goal, I would mounting some fs parts readonly (e.g. /usr) and thinking about tmpfs for volatile parts (e.g. lock, run under var). Additionally "optimize" some vm.dirty_* kernel- and fs/ext4 parameters. /persistent would be used with jffs2 on a CF card. So far the theory. Does anyone have some experience with such type of systems? Any pointer to pitfalls are welcome. -- Thanks LF

Hi, I've got some problem receiving mails from this list. Now and then the mails received from this list have an invalid dkim header. Therefore they are rejected by my MTA. This causes me missing same mails and from time to time I get some mail saying: Your membership in the mailing list CentOS has been disabled due to excessive bounces. What is going wromg here? CentOS 7 turn off power saving by command line

In CentOS 6 gconftool-2 (command line) is used to enable/disable items. In CentOS 7 I found "settings->power-> blank screen" as something I wish to configure by the command line? How is that accomplished? I brought up gconf-editor and searched for power and blank and found nothing. How can I control this setting from the command line? Thanks Jerry

Layer 2 VPN with OpenSSH on CentOS7 not working!

Hi all. I'm trying to bring an Amazon VM into the LAN by following this guide [0]. However, it appears that OpenSSH on either RHEL7 or CentOS7 is broken as it is not creating tap interface but tun interface. I've tried this on both CentOS5 and CentOS6 and they both work as advertised! Downgrading the OS is not an option! gconftool-2 for 7

on 6 the command: gconftool-2 -t bool --list-type bool --set /apps/gnome_settings_daemon/screensaver/start_screensaver false would stop the screen saver. What is it on 7. The above seems to do nothing. Also The gnome-panel process was running in 6 - it does not seem to be run in 7. How do I hide/remove the top and bottom panel? The "hide" in gconftool-2 for top and bottom done seem to do anything either. What might I be missing? Thanks, Jerry

I am looking for opinions and personal experience on CentOS7 for both grid and virtualized web environments. I am currently on CentOS6.5 in a production environment. I am about to add about 50 more servers to my grid and am trying to identify the advantages and disadvantages of going to CentOS7. The good part is, that I have some tolerance for backing out and installing CentOS6.5 if 7 does not work out. I read the comments about what CentOS7 brings but want to make sure that I am not introducing undue risk. Not seen a lot of issues with it. I also have a small private cloud (VMWare esxi) and wanted to know if anyone was using CentOS7 there. The basic question: Should I be holding off a little longer on going to CentOS7 in production? UPS question

so I have a bunch of servers at work that are on DUAL UPS's (1 per each of 2 power supplies). Its mostly HP gear, but also some Sun and IBM. Ideally I'd like the system to not go into shutdown unless BOTH UPS's that a particular box is plugged into (there's actually 4 UPS, 2 per each of 2 racks). Has anyone ever configured anything like that with NUT or whatever? Right now, I'm running without any UPS monitoring software, as the whole building is on a generator that comes on 60 seconds after a power failure, so my 7kVA(!) UPS's don't see much use, and also I just installled these new racks and UPS's and haven't really had the time to sit down and figure it all out. -- john r pierce 37N 122W somewhere on the middle of the left coast

I installed alsamixer to control the sound levels, but despite all having the volume up, I can't hear anything. However, that is not the problem; I only offer that to say this... I am trying to run an audio server using Icecast and Darkice, but no device can be found. In the past, it has shown up as a device: /dev/dsp1. Using a "default" option offers no help. It doesn't work. There is no "/dev/dsp1", like there is on my other machines. OK, so off to the configuration panel on Gnome I go. System->Preferences->Sound. And, it hangs with a "waiting for sound system to respond" message. I have Google-foo'd everything: no, I don't have Pulseaudio, as that messes up Icecast and Darkice. I have never had this issue before on any server. Does anyone have any ideas, or a webpage/wiki you could point me at that I might have missed? Spacewalk? Local repo? Cache?

I have a mix of CentOS 5, 6, and now 7 servers at work. There are enough of them now that it is starting to make sense for them to get updates from an internal source. I've seen RHN Satellite in years past. It looks like it may be a way to allow Windows admins here (familiar with WSUS) to update Linux boxes. A local repo might be easier to set up, but (as with Spacewalk) it seems like we'd end up with a lot of packages we don't need. A proxy and a sufficiently-large cache might do the trick if the first Linux box to get updates populates the cache which the files the others will need, but I haven't looked into this enough to see if there's even a way that works. How do you all keep a dozen or more Linux boxes updated? Centos 6 Software RAID 10 Setup

I am setting up a Centos 6.5 box to host some Openvz containers. I have a 120gb SSD I am going to use for boot, / and swap. Should allow for fast boots. Have a 4TB drive I am going to mount as /backup and use to move container backups too etc. The remaining four 3TB drives I am putting in a software RAID 10 array and mount as /vz and all the containers will go there. It will have by far the most activity. Does this layout look ok? Bash package for CentOS5

Hi! I have noticed, that our mirror has this package bash-3.2-33.el5_11.4.x86_64.rpm, but a lot of other mirror still have bash-3.2-33.el5_10.4.x86_64.rpm. Since bash-3.2-33.el5_11.4.x86_64.rpm was issued on 26-Sep-2014 04:28, could this be the product of slower mirror update cycles? My current samba domain controller is running ClearOS. But I am migrating to ARM servers (cubieboards) and using RedSleeve for now, and Centos7arm when that gets rolling. The driver is power savings; my ROI just on power is ~15months. So I only run an NT style Domain Controller with XP clients and roaming user profiles. It works, as there are only a few systems here are really just my wife and I. But it is nice for my wife to hop on a laptop at the dinning table and get her same desktop as she has on the den computer. So copying the basic Samba files is rather simple, it seems, but then there is the LDAP setup and the add machine and user scripts. So it gets complex rather quickly. I looked over on the Centos Wiki and did not find any help there, but my search foo has always been weak. So is there a howto I can use to get off the 'everything (and more than I want) done for me' bandwagon and build the basics myself? I figure I can deal with dnsmasq, even though I am a bind kind of guy; the configs look simple. But there is probably a dyndns piece lurking somewhere. NTP I have always done myself. I have even hacked a bit at basic Samba to maintain per user logins. But the ldap will definitely be a new experience... thanks for any pointers (that help me :) ).

Apache wakes-up inactive Exim

Had a surprising event on C 6.5. Exim was the only MTA installed. It was partially configured (with ACL, Router, Transport) and definitely not running. I was remotely testing a web page. A web page error condition invoked the embedded PHP mail() command. To my astonishment something in Centos woke-up Exim. Exim sent the email and then became inactive again. The Exim logs does not show any start-up lines, just 1. input from Apache. 2. output to remote server. 3. 'completed'. Hours later Logwatch, not yet customised, also caused inactive Exim to send an email (which got rejected by Exim because it was to local user 0). What causes Centos to temporarily activate in-active (meaning non-running) Exim ? Thanks, Paul. England EU.

RPM install/upgrade problem

Hi, For the last few updates I'm having a yum problem. # yum update gives the following error for e.g. Running transaction Updating : bash-4.2.45-5.el7_0.2.x86_64 1/10 Error unpacking rpm package bash-4.2.45-5.el7_0.2.x86_64 error: unpacking of archive failed on file /usr/bin/alias;5423b9bc: cpio: open The same problem happens if I try to use rpm for the update so it appears to be an rpm problem rather than a yum one. I've rebuilt the rpm databases successfully but tthe problem persists. xfce on CentOS 7: can't lock screen

Ok, trying to bypass the usual flames (I used CDE for years, then KDE until it got dumbed-down too much, and we all know how GNOME has turned out) ... I've decided to try out xfce on CentOS 7. I grabbed xfce from epel by installing the following via yum: epel-release @xfce So far it's pretty good, and is giving me the basic features I'm looking at without getting in my way. However, I can't seem to get the damned screen lock function to work. Leaving the monitor idle doesn't generally do anything. (Although just now, after having left it for a few hours, I got a blank screen with a few vertical narrow white bars that wouldn't respond to any key or mouse movement. Switching to a text console and back to the graphics console, however, brought up the xfce desktop again, but with no screen lock prompt.) If I select the 'Lock Screen' menu item from the top right corner of the screen it does nothing; doesn't lock the screen, provides no feedback that there's a problem, etc. The page <http://xmodulo.com/control-screen-lock-settings-linux-desktop.html> describes (for XFCE) bring up "Settings Manager" => "Screen Saver", but there is no "Screen Saver" option in the Settings Manager. A clue stick would be appreciated. Devin

High Performance graphics virtual environment: VGA Passthough or a VDI solution

Hello Early this summer I made the decision to eliminate my Windows dual boot, I rarely used windows. I have started a new job which will require using a 3d CAD Inventor/Solidworks (Windows software). Inventor starts in vmware workstation. I also switched from OpenSuSE to CentOS after evaluating Ubuntu, RHEL, SLED, and Centos, I wanted a more proven platform, less experimental stuff. For the last several years I have been wanting to build a multi-seat computer. I did configure a mulit-seat using xorg, it work ok but there were issue with the keyboard and the kernel reported many error. I used the dual seat system for play internet content to a tv but I do not think this solution would work well for multiple desktops. VGA Pass-through Redhat blog claims the beta release supports vga pass-through: http://rhelblog.redhat.com/2014/01/29/kvm-virtualization/ Is this true? I hope to find a cheaper video card then the professional NVIDA. Can VGA pass-through be accomplished using the application provide by CentOS 7? Many of the problems with the muli-seat configuration I used in the past was related to sharing usb device on multiple terminals. The thin client resolves all of those problems. I think VDI solution easier for my wife and daughter to use than the VGA pass through. Thin client will located the terminal in a different rooms. Now the fun part Xen or oVirt KVM. I preference for KVM the kernel module seem to work better. I have had problem with Xen. Does anyone have suggestion for a small home deployment. This is not practical but I have this supper fast computer I like to use and I want to postpone purchasing a Apple laptop for as long as possible. The skills developed in this project can be indirectly applied at work. Thank you Aaron

Ok I created my script this morning [Unit] Description=Connections After=network.target [Service] Type=notify ExecStart=/home/silentm/bin/mystart [Install] WantedBy=multi-user.target I put it in the correct directory, I rebooted and I see that my mystart script runs- programs start up but then they are killed with signal 15... Is there something else that allows them to continue to run? the mystart runs the needed programs then it does exit. I presume that mystart exit is killing the children. Whats the magic to let the children continue.? Thanks Jerry

Text file encoding

I'm working with some people using apple laptops. When we share text files (latex files), I reach in an encoding problem on our CentOS laptops and desktops. In my favorite editor, "é" is "<8e>", "à" is "<88>" etc... Of course, I can change the encoding with iconv: iconv -f MACINTOSH -t ISO8859-15 file.bib.mac >file.bib iconv -f ISO8859-15 -t MACINTOSH file.bib >file.bib.mac But it is a little tedious to work like this... Runing pdflatex (in CentOS) on these files written on apple laptops works fine with \usepackage[applemac]{inputenc} So the main problem is an editor problem. I've tried several ones (nedit, gedit, kate, vim...) none of them seams to support this encoding. But may be it is a configuration problem ? Any idea ? Thanks Patrick

CentOS Update

Hello. Previously debian, ubuntu, opensuse, I've used. But I'm new to CentOS too. I do not install desktop environment. Servers want to learn. I can not update the system. I could not so I researched. I give the following command . "yum update". I get the error. I'm working on a virtual machine. (I do not know English. Translation I wrote using.) One of the configured repositories failed (hand), and yum does not have enough cached data to continue. At this point the only yum can do is fail safe thing. There are a few ways to work "fix" this: 1 Contact the repository for the upstream and get them to fix the problem. 2 Reconfigure the BaseURL / etc. for the repository, to point to a working upstream. This is most often the Useful if you are using a new release distribution than is supported by the repository (and the for the previous release distribution packages still work). 3 Disable the repository, so yum will not use it by default. When will the Yuma just ignore the repository until you enable it again or use permanently --enablerepo for temporary usage: yum-config-manager --disable hand 4 Configure the repository failing to be skipped, if it is unavailable . Note that yum will try to contact the repo. most commands when it runs, so will have to try and fail each time (and plenty of sunshine. Yum Will be much slower). If it is a very temporary problem, though, this is often a nice compromise: yum-config-manager of --sav --setopt = el.skip_if_unavailabl = true Connot find a valid baseurl for repo: base / 7x86_64 "vi" with CentOS-Base.repo, CentOS-Debuginfo.repo, CentOS-Vault.repo, CentOS -Sources.repo files "enabled = 1" line as I did. But "soft repolist all" command when I type "status = 0" is displayed.

There is a README file on CentOS 7 in /etc/init.d that says Note that traditional init scripts continue to function on a systemd system. An init script /etc/rc.d/init.d/foobar is implicitly mapped into a service unit foobar.service during system initilization So I dropped my file in the above directory, rebooted and my item did not start. doing "systemctl list-unit-files | grep myservice" did now show anything. What piece did I miss? I used to use rc.local and just need a script to run AFTER everything else has ran. no special start/stop/reload is needed... just a simple script. Thanks jerry

Well, I've set up one of our new JetStors. xfs took *seconds* to put a filesystem on it. We're talking what df -h shows as 66TB. (Pardon me, my mind just SEGV'd on that statement....) Using bonnie++, I found that a) GPT and partitioning gave was insignificantly different than creating an xfs filesystem on a raw disk. I'm more comfortable with the partition, though. b) There was a small but significant difference if, when I created the filesystem, if I gave sw and su in the mkfs.xfs command. I do have a question for the group mind, though: mounting these monstrous partitions... should I, or, in fact, do I *need* to give, as a mount option inode64? There will be a *lot* of files on this sucker.... What are the pros and cons of that? mark

daemon for nfs client

In days of old, in Solaris there was a daemon for NFS Client, and NFS server (actually several including portmap...). I am unable to find reference to the daemon that runs NFS client But the RedHat Documentation does not explain the NFS client daemon. Is this a service or something else. on centos6.5 I previously posted about a really weird root filesystem. It started on another non critical server. so I found out when I unmounted the NFS filesystem the problem went away. BUT the NFS filesystem will not remount. On the non critical server, an old windows trick "reboot fixes everything" brought NFS and the mount up clean no problems But I want to try and fix this on the critical server without a reboot. Is there a way to stop and start the NFS client like I can restart the NFS server?

LS command bizzare behavior

Hi, My bosses are running into an issue, where we type "ls" on a nfs mounted filesystem, and files that are there are not listed... I thought it was pilot error until my big boss showed me... but we can vi the files, we can access them via other means if we know the name. Then once we have accessed them, LS now shows the files. We are running centos 6.5, we are accessing them via xwin-32 (which should not be the issue).... I looked on google and found nothing discussing this...of course this has nothing to do with hidden files (dot in front) because once we access the files we can see them. Thanks Dan

launching samba and having logs

Hi all, I try to setup a Samba/Openchange service. In the Oopenchange documentation, they advise to launch samba in an interactive mode and a verbose level: I like that. http://www.openchange.org/cookbook/configuring.html # samba -d3 -i -M single The problem is I want to launch it via an init script (centos6) # .... I dont get the same verbose output in any log file in "/var/log/samba/" How to get the same verbosity in a log file when launching samba from an init script? BTW, I dont understand what is the difference between /var/log/samba4/log.samba and /var/log/samba4/log.smbd Thank you very much.

C7 - implementation guide URL?

I went to the RH site and used wget to download an offline copy for some work I'm doing. When I went back I had a gig of text and no end in sight. This was due to multiple (a lot) languages. I tried downloading the English version only but it seems there are links somehow that lead every time to other languages. Does anyone have a URL for a downloadable implementation guide for English only? TIA Dave

They're doing it as emx, where x=[1...], except where it wants old Sun-style pxdx... which I hate. I can live with emx, if I have to. People who can't count from 0.... Hi, folks, I'm about to build a filesystem on a CentOS 7 box, on a JetStore RAID box through a QLogic ISP2532 card. Do I need to specifiy sw and su, or will xfs query the subsystem and get that itself? mark (assuming nixpam lets me through....)

I have one user. We've pretty much all got two monitors, but he insists on rotating both of them vertically - that is, they're taller than they are wide, and he's got a Radeon card. I always have X grief on his system when I update it.... I just did a full update. X comes up in both screens... but the left one is *not* rotated, while the right one is. And they're mirrored. I've logged in as root, looked at all the configuration I know of, and nothing tells it to mirror, or one rotate and the other not. But when I use the menu, and go to system->preferences-display, it shows mirror screens *always* checked. I uncheck that, and hit apply, and nothing happens. I move the one off from over the other, and rotate the other, and still, nothing at all happens, and I don't see anything written, anywhere. Suggestions? mark
