Is there a way to get firefox to not print all that useful data at the top and bottom of a web page. For me, that oftem makes one web page into two printed pages. Hi there, because I just noticed that there is still no RPM package for RHEL 7/ CentOS 7 for Virtualbox .... what is the safest and cleanest way to install Virtualbox on CentOS 7? Has anyone already done and can make a recommendation? hi When i tried to install centos 7, my nvidia ethernet port not detected during installation whereas all of other distros working perfectly without any problem... well look at that. I didn't know that was possable. I had tried it before with other OS's using with virtualbox and it wouldn't run. Interesting. 1stboot stuff?

Will anything break if you never log into the console after the initial reboot? I just installed my first copy in a VM, and connected over ssh as I normally would for all access after the install. But I just happened to leave the console window open and later noticed that it was prompting for license acceptance which I didn't see in the ssh login. On a more typical install, no one will ever log in at the console after the network is up. Will that matter, and is there a way to keep it from confusing operators that might need to log in with a crash cart much later? -- Les Mikesell lesmikesell(a)gmail.com

CentOS-7 problem

I installed CentOS-7 on an HP MicroServer from a KDELiveCD (on a USB stick), and it ran OK for a couple of days; but yesterday it wouldn't reboot - the dots went round the circle indefinitely, and when I clicked on Ctrl-Alt-Delete it said "[OK] Reached target Initrd Default Target". There didn't seem to be any way to reboot except to press the power button. I tried running the rescue kernel, but that didn't help. I tried installing the netinstall iso on a USB stick, and choosing the repair option - this ran ok, and I was able to run grub2-install, but this failed to boot as before. I'm wondering if there is anything else I could do to resuscitate the system? CentOS-7 on a USB stick

I tried dd-ing the ISO onto a USB stick, as suggested in <http://wiki.centos.org/Manuals/ReleaseNotes/CentOS7>, but it didn't boot. Did anyone have better luck with this? In any case, I got it working by running livecd-iso-to-disk on a Fedora-20 laptop. I've found before that this is the best program around for the purpose. But I've 2 queries about this: 1. Why isn't this program available on CentOS? 2. I find it strange the using a USB stick seems to be regarded as an out-of-the-ordinary idea. Are people still burning CDs or DVDs? And if so why? I would have thought the time had come to make USB sticks the standard installation method? Certainly it should be treated on a par with DVDs. I have two HP MicroServers running under CentOS, and these don't come with a DVD drive. Can't see all files on a cifs mount

Awhile ago I've set up a backup of my C6 home server to a D-Link NAS and it seems to be working. But when I mount a share with the backups I can't see files or directories not readable by others. I'm not very knowledgeable in cifs and probably missing some obvious options. noserverino option suggested on ubuntu forums didn't help. TIA

New binary package set for EL6 x86_64

Hi users of EL6 based distributions, I'm pleased to announce a new alternative binary package repository for EL6 x86_64. The aim is to provide a supplemental set of packages which may contain software not included in your base system. These packages are based on pkgsrc, a cross-platform package manager. In this initial release there are 13,152 packages available. For now I am specifically targetting EL6/x86_64 (the build host is CentOS 6.5) to see what kind of interest in this. If there is reasonable interest I can produce packages for other targets based on popularity. Ok, we can take both but needs to be in a specific order. So, we have two ethernet interfaces, A and B. And both are defined in /etc/systemd/network/ to use dhcp. How to guarantee that the crap provided by dhcp to A (dns, gateway, ntp) is the default? To use an example, /etc/resolv.conf should end up like nameserver IP.for.A.DNS nameserver IP.for.B.DNS domain A.domain.com Now, this must be done using only systemd stuff

It is incorrectly saying that either monitor I connect is only able to support 640x480, when one is 1024x768 and the other supports a higher (but now forgotten) resolution. In no way do I expect a fix to be added just to support my antique. :) What I'd like to find, or have added to future CentOS installation discs, is a way to force the GUI resolution. Alternately, if nothing below 800x600 will show the GUI properly perhaps the installer should just forcibly set that as the minimum, no matter what the hardware claims to allow? Details of the hardware and such follow, let me know if you need more. =-=-=-=-=-= Under the normal boot from the normal DVD, graphics-mode output is discolored and squashed to the left of the display. CentOS 7 in VirtualBox

I installed CentOS 7 in VirtualBox in OS X Yosemite, but the NIC is not getting an IP address. So I thought it was a problem with the thunderbolt adapter. I then installed CentOS 7 in VirtualBox on a box with CentOS 6.5. The network doesn't work in the VM either. Anyone tried CentOS 7 in VirtualBox (latest version) and have the network working? I have windows 8.1, linux mint vm's on my centos 6.5 box and they all work with networking, but centos 7 vm doesn't have any networking. Do I need to install the VM tools for the network to work. I just installed CentOS 7 from the DVD ISO in virtual box. I only get a login prompt. Is that what the DVD ISO is supposed to do? To get a gui, do I need the Everything ISO? I'll try and see. Thanks, -wes

Roadmap for C7-i386 and -arm?

Is there a url to a roadmap for these projects? I am assuming that they are both in the works based on past emails. I am able to be a tester for a C7-arm work. I have a (and will be getting more) Cubieboard 2 systems. I have not decided yet if I have justification for the Cubieboard 3 (called the Cubietruck).

Hi I've just been looking for the debuginfo packages for CentOS 7 (I'm using systap in an attempt to judge the performance of some new tape drives), but upon enabling the debug repo, I just get a 404 looking for the repo's metadata. Any clues on where I might be able to get these packages? Centos7: server gui vs Gnome

Hello All, thanks for all the hard work and making Centos7 happen. I installed Centos7 with option "server with gui" and with "Gnome". There seems to be no difference. Moving sshd listen port

I edit sshd_config and set the desired port, open it with firewall-cmd and then issue a systemctl start sshd. On boot, my computer has been beeping at me and showing the BIOS screen for almost two minutes. During that time, it does not respond to tab or delete. Can't verify gpg signature for the file with hashes for the CentOS 7

Hello there. I've just downloaded the CentOS v7.0 via torrent and am trying to verify the gpg signature for the file with hashes. When I do "gpg --verify sha256sum.txt.asc" I get the key ID of F4A80EB5. Then I'm trying to get the public key with "gpg --keyserver pgp.mit.edu --recv-keys F4A80EB5" command. The gpg returns error of "no valid OpenPGP data found". Does anyone have an idea of why the public key isn't there? Is there another keyserver I should try? installing C7 on an existing software RAID system

I'm running Centos 6.5 on a software RAID-1 pair. I originally installed it following one of the howtos from the Centos WIKI for Centos 5. My first installation was on 5.x, then when I moved to 6.x I found that Anaconda worked enough like the one in 5.x that I could easily adapt the procedure. however, the new Anaconda is nothing like the old one, so I doubt the procedure could be made to work (or rather, that I would understand how to make it work). So, if there is anyone around who understands (1) the underlying procedures, and (2) has an idea how to do it in C7, I'd be forever (more or less) indebted if some form of howto could be created. Or at least a few hints? I'm not in a huge hurry to migrate this machine (my home desktop, box, actually) to C7, but eventually (during the next 3-6 months, likely) will want to either migrate on the same drive pair, or build a new one on a new pair of drives, so I'd really appreciate some docs or general guidance/info on how to proceed when the time strikes. thanks! I installed centos 6.5 from a dvd. Now that 7 is out, I'l like to try it. I tried: sudo yum clean all && sudo yum update but it said there were no updates. Is there a command-line way to upgrade from 6.5 to 7? Thanks, -wes

The easiest way for Fedora 14 to Centos 6 migration?

I manage several Fedora 14 servers. They was not upgraded due to several reasons (systemd unreliability, K12LTSP support absence), some newer packages I was building & updating manually, some other (OpenOffice, Mozilla) was possible update from projects binaries. Now I consider the options to migrate them to Centos 6, possibly the easiest possible way. What I'd like is some as yum configuration files replacement of those from Fedora with files from Centos - and then simply do "yum update". Has anyone tried to do a similar migration? And of the OP : the move of defaults to /usr is/was expected as from the beginning the usr consolidation was prepared in order to have a common system shared over network And about new mechanics of systemd: i can wait to see how seamless will be the use of chef/puppet tools on systemd systems. These notes are updated constantly to include issues and incorporate feedback from the users. - ---------- Updates, Sources and DebugInfos Since the upstream EL7 release, there have been some updates released - - these have been built and are being pushed to the CentOS mirror network at the moment. They will be available within the next 24 hrs. - From this point on we will aim to deliver all updates within 24 to 48 hrs of upstream releases. For the first time, this release was built from sources hosted at git.centos.org, however srpms being a byproduct of the build and also considered critical in the code and buildsys process are being published to match every rpm we release. Sources will be available from vault.centos.org in their own dedicated directories to match the corrosponding binary rpms. Since there is far lesser traffic to the source rpms compared with the binary rpms, we are not putting this content on the main mirror network, however if users wish to mirror this content they can do so using the reposync command available in the yum-utils package. All source rpms are signed with the same key used to sign their binary counterparts. Debuginfo packages are also being signed and pushed. They should be online by the end of this week, July 11th. Yum configs for both sources and debuginfo packages are included in the default centos-release package on every install. For the CentOS-7 build and release process we adopted a very open process. The output of the entire buildsystem is made available, as its built, at http://buildlogs.centos.org/ - we hope to continue with that process for the life of CentOS-7, and attempt bringing CentOS-5 and CentOS-6 builds into the same system. - ---------- Numbering CentOS 7.0-1406 introduces a new numbering scheme that we want to further develop into the life of CentOS-7. The 0 component maps to the upstream realease, whose code this release is built from. The 1406 component indicates the monthstamp of the code included in the release ( in this case, June 2014 ). By using a monthstamp we are able to respin and reissue updated media for things like container and cloud images, that are regularly refreshed, while still retaining a connection to the base distro version. In order to facilitate Special Interest Groups to further extend the CentOS Linux platform, we are also using component codes. The main distro is, therefore, titled 'Core'. How to enable sound for other users but the one who owns the current session

Hello there! I'm trying to get sound from applications running from other users bug the one who owns the current GNOME sessions. Typically, my default user is "A" and he's running the GNOME session, logged in graphically. From this session, I open terminals, su to other users (B or C, non-root) and run mplayer or firefox. No sound for these. Adding those users to the "audio" group didn't help. Any idea how to do this? Regards, -- wwp

I'm trying to streamline a backup system using ZFS. In our situation, we're writing pg_dump files repeatedly, each file being highly similar to the previous file. Is there a file system (EG: ext4? xfs?) that, when re-writing a similar file, will write only the changed blocks and not rewrite the entire file to a new set of blocks? Assume that we're writing a 500 MB file with only 100 KB of changes. Other than a utility like diff, is there a file system that would only write 100KB and not 500 MB of data? In concept, this would work similarly to using the 'diff' utility... -Ben

I downloaded the Live DVD for CentOS-6.5 and burned a DVD-R using a CentOS-6.5 desktop. To test the validity of the new DVD I then rebooted the same desktop using the same Live DVD. And, no mourn. Took three-quarters of an hour, which someone inconvenienced Beecher, but the server I came in so early to reboot did it's thing (think DOS or Windows chkdisk, except with a *lot* more disk), and I got the memory that Dell shipped me last Thurs into the other server, and everything's up swimmingly. Oh, and I'd gotten a email the other day - for some reason, they thought the card I'd reserved the room at the con with expired before our stay, so I updated their info, and got a thanks from Rob, who I've been dealing with. I replied to that before we left this morning, and mentioned it had been a week, and we hadn't heard anything about Bath, etc... and I got a nice email from him, saying he'd walk down the hall and prod them. Now, let me reattach my IV of tea/caffeine....

Btrfs actually does sport built-in compression as a mount argument/flag and the delta snapshots works beautifully well but I wouldn't dare to use it with any kernel previous to 3.13; in fact best practice would be to use it with kernel 3.14.x or later, preferably 3.15.x and later. semi-OT: perl question

We've had a ton of selinux errors recently, and the other day, one of the managers here, after I started inquiring what their perl CGI was doing, found a way to reproduce the issue at will. It seems that before I upgraded their servers from CentOS 5.x, they were trapping interrupts such as a browser breaking the connection before getting a response, and under CentOS 6, it's looking like the traps aren't working. Has anyone seen anything like that? mark

Miredo server for Centos 6

On delving deeper into Miredo support, it seems that Miredo Server is a separate program from the Miredo client/relay. And that there is no Miredo Server available for Centos 6. Not in EPEL 6, or repoforge. So far the maintainer of Miredo for Fedora/EPEL has not reponded to a query on its status for EPEL 6. I have to ask on repoforge about miredo-server. Anyone know of anywhere else to look? I suppose I can bring up a Fedora 20 box, as this is 'just' a testbed. But to move the testbed out of my network into the corp testbed, I need it for Centos. thanks

I copied /usr/bin/start-pulseaudio-x11 to /usr/bin/start-pulseaudio-x11-system, and in this file, replaced --start with -system. Added $MYUSERNAMEHERE ALL=NOPASSWD:/usr/bin/start-pulseaudio-x11-system to /etc/sudoers and modified the startup applications in GNOME prefs to `sudo /usr/bin/start-pulseaudio-x11-system` instead of `/usr/bin/start-pulseaudio-x11`. I am experimenting with tmux. I have run into a behaviour that I would like to change. Idf I connect to a single host multiple times via tmux, when I exit one tmux window then all the windows report their session closed. How to enable EDAC kernel module for checking ECC memory?

In order to support ZFS, we upgraded a backups server with a new, ECC motherboard. We're running CentOS 6 with ZFS on Linux, recently patched. Now, I want to enable EDAC so we can check for memory errors (and maybe PCI errors as well) but so far, repeatedly pounding on the Google hasn't yielded exactly what I need to do to enable EDAC. One howto was covering PCI and edac, but "modprobe edac_mc" didn't work. Here's some information below, How do I get edac up and running? I have a conference call in 15min where one of the discussions will be putting up my Teredo testbed, and this system is what is handy for the Teredo (Miredo) server. So I rushed more than I should have. But I did piece it all together. Now I can pull the rpmforge Miredo code and get that up. Too bad that it is not in EPEL 6; the Miredo maintainer has not commented on why it is not there.

I was upgrading a system remotely from Centos 6.3 to 6.5 via VNC. Now the system will not boot. Or at least without bringing up the console and switching to the older kernel. Again, thinking that more than kernel* would need to be removed, then how would it get reinstalled? So off I go try again. The box had been off for a year; it was a DNSSEC tester (I need to replace my router(s), I think to get DNSSEC working right, and that project is on hold). So it was quite back-leveled. If I end up needing to do a reinstall because I stumbled, so be it as a learning lesson.

gdb question

If you are trying to debug a core dump from a different machine, how do you tell gdb where to look for the debug info files to match the shared libs that you have in a non-standard location? It finds the shared libs themselves with a 'set solib-absolute-path' directive, but it doesn't look for the corresponding (relative) usr/lib/debug/... file that you get if you extract the debuginfo rpm in the same place. And if I set debug-file-directory to the top of the tree, it wants to also add the solib-absolute-path to that. Google Hangout Plugin Does Not Work For Other Users

Hey All, I've got the Google Talk plugin installed at: File: libnpgoogletalk.so Path: /opt/google/talkplugin/libnpgoogletalk.so Version: State: Enabled Version: 5.4.2.0 And the Google Talk Plugin Video Renderer at: File: libnpo1d.so Path: /opt/google/talkplugin/libnpo1d.so Version: State: Enabled Version: 5.4.2.0 When I start of join a Google Hangout all works as expected for me. When another user on my system tries to start/join a Hangout she gets an error telling her that the plugin is not installed. When I check "about:plugins" under her login it says that the plugin is installed in the same location/version. I checked the file access settings and found all is set as expected, 755, on the plugin and it's directories all the was down to root. -rwxr-xr-x. 1 root root 273496 Jun 7 17:38 libnpgoogletalk.so -rwxr-xr-x. 1 root root 229784 Jun 7 17:38 libnpo1d.so Shouldn't this work system wide? If I try to install the plugin as firefox seems to think I should I'm told that I already have the pluging installed, which is true. GUI Question

Hi, There's something weird happening to my CentOS VMs, cannot switch back to GUI. Black screen with a single underscore character at top left of the screen. Ok so I have ESXI 5.1 host, with 3 VM all running CentOS. I rebooted the esxi host yesterday for a power maintenance. All went well... until I switched console on the vms. I was able to login using the GUI, then I pressed Alt F5, then I was sent to the text console... I usually do this to save energy. I did the same for all the Centos vm... now I wanted to switch back to GUI but I can't. I even pressed all the keys from F1 to F12 but were not able to get back to the GUI for all the VMs. Can you please advise where Im missing? Regards, Deno

3D Acceleration with Matrox MGA G200EH?

I'm running on a machine with a Matrox MGA G200EH but it doesn't appear that the 3D acceleration is being used (for example Google Earth lists the driver as being Mesa). Is there an additional driver that I need to install to enable the 3D acceleration functionality? Or something else I need to do? Thanks, Dave

The second sample are the stats for a 1 second interval. I see the stats for sdf and sdg are roughly equal but they differ — they are the two active paths that are both being used. I see the stats for dm-7, dm-8 and dm-9 are almost completely identical - makes sense as they really represent the same “disk”. What confuses me is the fact that all the stats for sdf/sdg don’t add up to be equivalent to the dm-[789] devices For the rkB/s and wkB/s columns, the numbers for sdf and sdg add up to equal the numbers for dm-9. But for the first four columns: Column sdf/sdg dm-9 ====== ============= ==== rrqm/s 0.0 + 0.0 = 0.0 0 wrqm/s 54.0 +13.0 = 67.0 0 Very different r/s 7.0 + 1.0 = 8.0 8.0 w/s 48.0 + 26.0 = 74.0 141.0 Very different So read data matches and write data diverges Which numbers should I go with? OK, here on the general Centos list, I have one more thing to add to the above: I was chatting on the epel list about it, didn't get a lot of help (no reflection on those there) but smooge said he might have time to look into it next week. Also, someone else from the centos list sent private email that he had had the same problem and thought it might be a caja problem, but had not gone any further than that. So, I opened a terminal and started caja. SELinux context for web application directories

CentOS-6.5 We deploy web applications written with the Ruby on Rails framework using Capistrano (2.x). Each 'family' of web applications are 'owned' by a dedicated user id. The present httpd service is Apache 2.2.15 and we use Passenger 3.0.11. We are moving shortly to a new deployment host and at that time we will be updating to Apache 2.4.9 and Passenger 4..0.25. Our deployment practice is to place the 'family' directory under /var/data/. This is the home directory of the application user id. We place each individual web application or component into its own directory underneath the family root. That asinine nixspam did it to me again, and this time... seriously, I urge you, personally, to go there and try to remove a site. They've "enhanced their security", that is, mangling the capchas, to the point that it took me about five minutes or more, and about a dozen or 15 challenges, before I got one that I could read well enough to copy into the "I'm human" field. sshd_config AllowUsers syntax wrong in documentation

It seems the syntax for AllowUsers in sshd_config is not the same that is given in man sshd_config and in several documentation on the web. (http://www.openssh.com/cgi-bin/man.cgi?query=sshd_config) e.g. AllowUsers root does work. AllowUsers root username does not work. If I try to login as root I get "User root from <hostname> not allowed because not listed in AllowUsers". I tried separating by comma (just in case) which fails as well. man page mentions checking against hosts only if you use a root@hostname pattern there. AllowUser root@* username works for me (with root, didin't check the username), but this should not be necessary according to documentation. If "root" is allowed as a "pattern" it doesn't matter if there are more "patterns" coming or not. It seems that as soon as two names are listed it's read as one user ("root username"), e.g. it does not use the whitespace as a terminator. UsePAM=no , in case that makes a difference. CentOS 5.9, standard OpenSSH. I've noticed this discrepancy already in the past, but didn't investigate. I also think that this syntax contradicts what man ssh_config says about pattern lists, because for pattern-lists (which I understand is a list of patterns for one directive) ssh wants a comma-separated list. http://www.openssh.com/cgi-bin/man.cgi?query=ssh_config (man sshd_config says to look in ssh_config for pattern syntax.) I think this is a serious bug as it can lock you out very quickly while you want to secure your machine (once you want to have more than one user). Do you share the same opinion or am I doing something wrong and it works like advertised? Kai
