PostgreSQL 13 on CentOS 7

I am compiling an application that uses postgreSQL 13 and Qt 5.12. I have built the latter from scratch and successfully linked with libraries for postgreSQL 9.6 (the current version on CentOS 7) but have run into problems with postgreSQL 13. The server, client and libs are available in the postgres repository but I also need the devel library which in turns requires llvm5.0-devel which does not want seem to available... Has anyone successfully build an application use pg 13 or otherwise used postgresql13-devel? Thanks.

Is EPEL compatible with Stream?

Hello all-- All good in the Stream for me. :) Because Stream will tend to be more "forward moving" than previous CentOS releases, is it still OK to set up EPEL as a repo? So far, I've only installed terminus fonts from CentOS 8 EPEL, but I'm just wondering about this. units command, crazy output

whenever I use the units command from a script, e.g.: elapsed=86500 echo elapsed time: `units "$elapsed sec" hms` elapsed time: *Currency exchange rates from 2012-10-24* 24 hr + 1 min + 40 sec the man page even says it outputs that when run without arguments. My question is why in the world does it? certainly when run from within a script doing conversions of time using the "hms" option, I don't want that to be stuck in the middle of my output. Anybody know why it does that, or how to make it quit? (I know, I use sed to filter it out, but can't understand why I should have to. Thanks in advance! Fred

Disk choice for workstation ?

Hi, My workstation is currently equipped with a pair of Western Digital Red 1 TB SATA disks in a software RAID 1 setup. Some stuff like working with virtual machines is a bit slow, so I'm thinking about replacing the disks by SSD. I'm hesitating between three different setups: 1) Use a relatively small SSD (120 to 240 GB) to reinstall the system on it. Keep the two SATA disks in a RAID 1 array and mount /home on it. 2) Use a larger SSD (500 GB to 1 TB), install everything (including /home) on it. Keep the two SATA disks in a RAID 1 array and mount them on /data for storage. 3) Get rid of the disks and go full SSD, with a 1 TB disk. Any advice from the hardware gurus on this list? Sound/missing sof firmware in CentOS since 8.4

Hello all -- I switched to Stream yesterday hoping it would fix some issues I'd been having with CentOS 8.4 but alas it did not. I started out installing 8.2, maybe kernel 4.18.0 -147?, on my laptop about 2 months or so ago and the sound worked fine. Now, it does not. I seem to be running into this problem... https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1772498 I have located the rpm for this SOF package but as it states in this link, it can NOT be installed with my current alsa version. Disabling a firewalld zone

So I created a zone so I could put apply the same rules in a set of networks firewall-cmd --permanent --new-zone=pickles firewall-cmd --permanent --zone=ldap --add-source=192.168.102.0/24 firewall-cmd --permanent --zone=ldap --add-source=192.168.10.0/24 firewall-cmd --permanent --zone=ldap --add-source=192.168.3.0/24 firewall-cmd --permanent --zone=ldap --add-service=pickles firewall-cmd --reload Let's say I want to temporarily disable it. How can I do that? RIght now best I can do is completely delete it firewall-cmd --permanent --delete-zone=pickles firewall-cmd --reload which seems to be a bit harsh (good thing I documented my zone creation so I can just past the above commands and be done)

Questions about Stream

OK, we realized that the changes are final, and must somehow deal with it. Before making final decisions we need some answers. 1. What about bugs and security issues? The FAQ says: "Security issues will be updated in CentOS Stream after they are solved in the current RHEL release." Consider the scenario: a bug or security issue found in both Stream and current RHEL. It was fixed in RHEL in a few days. How fast it will be fixed in Stream? Obviously, it needs some time to port the fix to newer version of package. Days or months? Another scenario: a bug or security issue found in Stream but NOT in current RHEL. How fast it will be fixed in Stream? In a few days or in next RHEL release (up to 6 months)? 2. What to do in 2024, when Stream 8 is EOL. Perform full reinstall of all servers to Stream 9? Or there will be some kind of major version upgrade? A note about hardware: we don't know now what drivers will be dropped from RHEL and Stream 9. Bad news for server owners: in 2024 they may be forced to upgrade hardware or move to RHEL 8 because of its longer lifecycle.

CentOS 8.3 bugs

Hi: just try to install CentOS 8.3. I use two sata disks and create mdadm raid1 with LVM. Normally when I want to reinstall this system, anaconda should recognize the raid1/lvm so I can reformat it. anaconda at CentOS 8.3 failed to do the job. I tried Scientific Linux 7.9 and RHEL 8.3, both can recognize installed CentOS 8.3 correctly and let me reformat it. and there is no net-snmp-perl package in CentOS 8.3 repository. although it is in RHEL 8.3. wait for next bug-to-bug distribution....

You're misinformed. Kernels are still built from SRPM, but the archive used is no longer an upstream release with a series of patches. The reason for the change is not insidious. It's unfortunate that the pristine source + patches can't be maintained, I agree, but speaking as a developer: maintaining hundreds of patches that touch intersecting files and rebasing them all when earlier patches are updated is an incredibly difficult and time consuming task. And, if I remember correctly, applying all of those patches took almost as long as building the kernel. If it takes that long to just prepare the source code, that's a major hit to productivity when a developer needs to work on the code or build the SRPM to validate changes. And, ultimately, there's very little value in shipping those patches when the vast majority of them are already in the current version of the upstream kernel, and they're merely backported to the older release that Red Hat supports. It's an entirely different story when distributions are shipping patches that they don't push upstream, but that's not generally what you see with the kernel package.

I'm looking forward to the future of CentOS Stream

Personally, I think that changing focus on CentOS Stream is going to make CentOS (and maybe even RHEL) better in the same way and for the same reasons that Fedora is a better distribution than Red Hat Linux was. CentOS Stream should fix the biggest problems that CentOS has had in the past, providing a reliable, free LTS distribution with community participation. Having read the announcement, along with hundreds of reactions in blogs, forums, and mailing lists, I am of the opinion that all (or a reasonable approximation thereof) of the vocal concern is the result of the overloaded term "stable" as it applies to software distributions. If we imagine a spectrum of individuals in which one end of the spectrum is individuals whose primary occupation is in release engineering for software distributions and the other end is individuals who primarily consume software distributions, I would expect that individuals on one end to mostly use the term "stable" in the sense of compatibility and semantic versioning, and the other end to use the same term in the sense of having fewer bugs. The use of that word causes people at one end of the spectrum to infer a completely different message than people at the other end intend to communicate. If we never use the ambiguous term "stable" and instead use the terms compatibility and reliability (the two common meanings of "stable" at different ends of the spectrum), I think that various aspects of CentOS Stream will be better than CentOS, or the same as CentOS. With respect to compatibility: I think most developers are familiar with semantic versioning. Semantic versioning is used by some applications and libraries to indicate the nature and extent of changes. The version is presented numerically as Major.Minor.Revision. When new interfaces are added, the minor number is increased. Those changes don’t affect backward compatibility. When individual interfaces are changed or removed, the major number is increased. Those changes aren’t backward compatible. That allows consumers to infer that if an application is compatible with 8.1, then it is also compatible with 8.2 and later, but might not be compatible with 9.0. Red Hat Enterprise Linux applies that concept to the entire software distribution, providing independent software vendors a convenient means of communicating their compatibility. If they’ve tested their application on RHEL 8.2, then any RHEL 8 host patched to at least that release is expected to run the application. Moreover, Red Hat will continue to publish security patches to each given minor release’s channel, allowing consumers to "pin" a host to a minor release. Those hosts will not receive feature updates, but will mitigate vulnerabilities. CentOS Stream isn’t going to feature minor releases, and isn’t going to provide semantic versioning of the distribution. The same application that the vendor has validated on RHEL 8.2 will run on a fully patched CentOS Stream 8 host, but might not run on a host that isn’t fully patched. On the surface, it appears that CentOS users will lose the convenience provided by semantic versioning. I would simply point out that the CentOS developers have never supported running CentOS in any state other than fully patched. They don’t publish security information in the package repositories, and they don’t support any means of pinning a host to a minor release. For practical purposes, CentOS Stream will need to be fully patched for compatibility purposes, just like CentOS is, and will be equally suited for production purposes. To put a really find point on that: Semantic versioning is only meaningful for hosts that are not fully patched. A fully patched host is expected to be compatible with any application validated for that major release. With respect to reliability: Many of the people concerned about the change in focus refer to CentOS Stream as a "beta" for RHEL. That is not how Red Hat or the CentOS maintainers describe CentOS Stream( anywhere that I've seen), and I think it ignores most of the development, testing, and distribution pipeline. At the risk of oversimplifying that pipeline a whole lot, in the future Free Software will pass through several stages on the way to RHEL: Stage 1: (Software Development) The majority of development and testing is done in individual upstream projects, outside of Red Hat. Stage 2: (Release Development, aka Rawhide) The initial work to build and integrate individual packages with the rest of the software distribution is done in what is essentially a development branch of the software distribution. Stage 3: (Stable[1], aka Fedora) Packages that have passed through review and QA are published for general use. There is no minor release, as major releases occur every 6 months and are supported for only 13 months, anyway. Compatibility is maintained by prohibiting significant version changes for applications and libraries "whenever possible." Users expect no new features during a release, but no breaking changes either. Stage 4: (Long Term Support, aka CentOS Stream) Packages that CentOS Stream includes from Fedora have proven reliable in a variety of workloads managed by many users of Fedora. These packages are expected to be very reliable as a result of testing by their developers, by package maintainers, and by real-world users. They are included in CentOS Stream when they are ready. Stage 5: (Long Term Support with Semantic Versioning of the OS, aka Red Hat Enterprise Linux) Packages that RHEL includes from CentOS Stream have a similar level of QA, but package updates that introduce new features and interfaces are accepted only once every six months when Red Hat publishes a minor release. There’s a lot of concern that CentOS Stream will offer less reliability than RHEL, but there’s currently no reason to believe that will be true. There is no evidence that the minor releases that are part of the RHEL lifecycle improve reliability, and as far as I know that's not the reason they're used. Their function is to offer semantic versioning of the OS. CentOS Stream will probably offer the same level of compatibility and reliability that CentOS does today, and should be equally appropriate or inappropriate for production use in the future as CentOS is now in that respect. And that brings me to the one aspect where I think CentOS Stream will resolve the one major, glaring problem that CentOS has today, that most users ignore: Security. With respect to security: Today, CentOS is a release stage after Stage 5 described above. The CentOS maintainers begin work on a minor release after that release is available to RHEL consumers, and the process of rebuilding those packages is often very time consuming. CentOS maintainers have to reverse-engineer the exact order in which packages are built, with the exact set of installed and available packages in the build environment in order to ensure that the resulting package actually uses the same interfaces that RHEL’s packages do. All packages require that ordering and build environment matching, but most packages are published in small sets and ordering is much easier to identify than it is when they are published in a large batch. As a result, security updates can’t be published for CentOS while the maintainers are rebuilding the minor release, because the build dependencies aren’t available yet. Those windows occur every six months, and are typically a month or more in length. [2] Today, CentOS users accept the risk that for roughly two months out of the year, their systems may have known vulnerabilities with no patch to remediate the problem. Personally, I think that’s a huge risk that needs to be weighed against the costs of RHEL licenses whenever CentOS is used in production. The good news is that CentOS Stream looks like it won't have that problem. CentOS Stream updates still won’t be prepared early, while vulnerability details are embargoed, but there aren’t any windows in which CentOS Stream can’t immediately begin work on preparing updates once the embargo ends. That means that CentOS Stream will be as secure as CentOS is today in between minor updates, and significantly more secure than CentOS is today while its maintainers prepare minor releases. The trade-off of significantly improving security in exchange for giving up semantic versioning of the OS is a huge improvement for production purposes. In addition, the announcement of the change in focus indicates that Fedora maintainers should have much better visibility into work going on within the RHEL release engineering process, and more opportunity to participate in that work, and I look forward to that. CentOS’s big security problem has always been compounded by the lack of any external visibility into the process. Based on the information available today, I expect CentOS to be a very reliable, reasonably secure distribution of GNU/Linux with Long Term Support. Is Oracle a real alternative to Centos? I'm asking because genuinely don't know; I've never paid any attention to Oracle's Linux offering before now. But today I've seen a couple of the folks here mention Oracle Linux and I see that Oracle even offers a script to convert Centos 7 to Oracle. Nothing about Centos 8 in that script, though. https://linux.oracle.com/switch/centos/ That page seems to say that Oracle Linux is everything that Centos was prior to today's announcement. But someone else here just said that the first thing Oracle Linux does is to sign you up for an Oracle account. So, for people who know a lot more about these things than I do, what's the downside of using Oracle Linux versus Centos? I assume that things like epel/rpmfusion/etc will work just as they do under Centos since it's supposed to be bit-for-bit compatible like Centos was. What does the "sign up with Oracle" stuff actually do, and can you cancel, avoid, or strip it out if you don't want it? Based on my extremely limited knowledge around Oracle Linux, it sounds like that might be a go-to solution for Centos refugees. CentOS advisories for 8 release

Hello dear CentOS community, I'm writing on this mailing list because I'm discovering CentOS 8 after several years of practice on CentOS 7. One of my main concern about a distribution is Bug Fixes and Security Fixes. For CentOS 7, all fixes where identified on CentOS-Announces lists with CESA, CEBA and CEEA which is a good thing in order to identify how a distribution can be broken, vulnerable. However, I didn't find any announcement for CentOS 8. I tried to investigate about any changes about announcement policies but I didn't find anything reliable. So I'm asking here what is exactly the status about announcements for CentOS 8 ? Is it a thing who totally disappeared replaced by Red Hat advisories or is it something different ? Software raid Oddity

I have a CentOS 7.9 system with a software raid 6 root partition. Today something very strange occurred. At 6:45AM the system crashed. I rebooted and when the system came up I had multiple emails indicating that 3 out of 6 drives had failed on the root partition. Strangely I was able to boot into the system and everything was working correctly despite > cat /proc/mdstat also indicating 3 out of 6 drives had failed. Since the system was up and running despite the fact more than 2 drives had failed in the root raid array I decided to reboot the system. Actually I shut it down, waited for the drives to spin down and then restarted. This time when it came back the 3 missing drives were back in the array and a cat /proc/mdstat indicated all 6 drives were again in the raid 6 array. So a few questions: 1.) If 3 our of 6 drives of a raid 6 array supposedly fail, how does the array still function? 2.) Why would a shutdown/restart sequence supposedly fix the array? 3.) My gut suggests that the raid array was never degraded and that my system (i.e. cat /proc/mdstat) was lying to me. Any Opinions? What about the AltArch repositories? (+ some experiments with aarch64 on Raspberry Pi)

Hello, given the recent change in direction of CentOS, what will become of the AltArch repositories? (like CentOS 7 aarch64 and the related kernel repositories) I have been experimenting (with some success) with running a regular CentOS 8 aarch64 (ARM 64 bits) on a Raspberry PI 4 (with 4GB RAM), using the aarch64 kernel-rpi2 provided by CentOS 7 AltArch [1]. (a few more technical details below) This is a very different question than what is currently hotly discussed on this list, with the end of the bug-for-bug clone of RHEL, as there were never expectations that such settings would be supported. But on the other hand, I liked to use CentOS for innovation in a given field (mostly Java related) as its stability allowed one to go deep into one direction with "other things being equal" (contrary to Fedora, which is always moving in all directions). I guess that all these "side projects" (and SIGs, etc.) will disappear as well, won't they? Cheers, Mathieu ## More details about running CentOS aarch64 on a Raspberry Pi 4 As for my experiments with running CentOS 8 on a Raspberry Pi 4, a bit more details, so that these efforts are not completely lost. Two approaches were working : - From a plain CentOS 7 AltArch aarch64 installation, perform a CentOS 8 aarch64 install in a chroot (with the --installroot option) + a clean kernel-pi2 install from the CentOS 7 kernel-pi2 repository. Then copy the chroot to an .img file, and use this image to initialise an SD card. - From a plain CentOS 7 AltArch aarch64 installation, perform an in-place upgrade to CentOS 8 (first install dnf from EPEL, then switch the repos, and it works) The second approach had better device support on the Raspberry Pi 4 (most importantly the wifi, which was not working with the first approach), but this was probably a matter of subtle kernel / modprobe configs that were beyond my skills. I thought that I would share all this at some point, and ask for help from the CentOS AltArch developers; but I guess it is irrelevant right now. Both approaches were working equally well on the Raspberry Pi 3 (but Fedora support is good for this version, while Raspberry Pi 4 is not supported, so I tend to use Fedora aarch64 on them). As for what is actually the point of doing all this, this is not for weekend hobby tinkering, and it is relevant for server-side applications. ARM 64 bits is becoming an important platform (hence the fact that RHEL is now supporting it, MacOS will soon completely move to it, etc.) especially if one is interested in climate-friendly low-power IT, also on the server-side. But finding hardware is not easy and the (cheap) Raspberry Pi have 64-bit capable processors, even though the default distrib (Raspbian, based on Debian) does not yet support 64 bits (but they are working on it [2]). After trying many distributions, a paradox was that CentOS was actually the easiest to deploy and use in order to get some results (thanks to the work of the AltArch team!) In my case, the main interest was to test on ARM 64 bits GraalVM, the next generation Java platform, which can compile Java (and other programming languages) to native code. These builds require a lot of memory, but with an extremely slimmed down CentOS 8 and the 4 GB memory of the Raspberry Pi 4, it worked! [3] On a different layer, I could also test Eclipse SWT (Java user interface library) on this architecture (but on the plain CentOS 7 aarch64 with GNOME), and provide some quick feedback to Eclipse developers on their recent support for the whole Eclipse IDE on ARM 64 bits. On-demand audio streaming software

Hi, Since 2006 I had a streaming audio server based on Icecast and MPD running on CentOS. It works like a little webradio, e.g. listeners connect to a live stream with VLC, Audacious or any other client capable of this. I wonder if there's some software that can stream on-demand audio like music playlists or podcasts. What I'd like to do is host a series of playlists (like "Radio Show of the week") or podcasts, and then someone who wants to listen to it clicks on it and can listen to it from start to end. Any suggestions? Fix for CVE-2020-1971 on CentOS 6.10

Hi, While many of us were busy lately with upgrading CentOS 6 systems to CentOS 8, a lot of systems may still be running CentOS 6 and migrations came to a halt this week with the announcement of RedHats new direction for the CentOS project. Since security updates for CentOS 6 are not provided anymore, I've decided to try my best to address CVE-2020-1971 and I welcome others to do the same for this and other new issues which may come up. Why? it is called "rolling release" and no one gave officially a statement to the question I asked, if it is meant like that of Win10 ... a beta release is not the same that many expect as a stable system, as they are used to have with CentOS; you should think of renaming CentOS to something different, because with Enterprise this CentOS Stream has nothing in common; and does Redhat really expect everone - even private people - afford a RHEL subscription¹ just to have a stable system? ¹ I would in case I only need just one RHEL subscription for ALL my private used VMs (including the ones hosted in internet as VPS) - a DNS server - a proxy server (squid) - a mail server (mail store - cyrus-imapd) - a mail server (mail router f. outgoing mails) - a mail server (mail scanner f. incoming mails with SpamAssassin and ClamAV) - a 2nd proxy server (squid, with SSL interception and Squidclamav plus ClamAV) - a web server (apache) - a jump host - a 6in4 router - desktop with graphical UI (plus Firefox and Thunderbird) is a now a SL, but they decided several time ago, not to do their own system based on RHEL, they use CentOS, that is now a little bit bad for this/SL's use case; - a VPS with OpenVPN (used with my smartphone) - a VPS with a proxy (squid, to avoid censorship due to geolocation blocking) - a VPS as the other end of 6in4 - a VPS with storage of my own files (all VPS run a bind, too) Thanks for read; Walter

Oracle Linux - oracle-epel vs epel - dnf priority

I'd like to run this by you guys and get your opinion. For those of us who are considering moving to Oracle Linux (or at least doing some experimenting with it), I just had an idea for dealing with the fact that the oracle-el-epel apparently doesn't have all of the packages that are in the fedora-el-epel that we all know and love. It makes sense to me to use the oracle epel with OL to the greatest extent possible simply because it's part of OL. To get around the missing package issue, what about setting up both oracle-epel and fedora-epel, and then using the dnf priorities to pick the stuff from oracle-epel first and if it's not there then grab it from fedora-epel. One issue that I can see (though it may not be an actual issue) is the way the priorities setting works: QUOTE: priority integer The priority value of this repository, default is 99. If there is more than one candidate package for a particular operation, the one from a repo with the lowest priority value is picked, possibly despite being less convenient otherwise (e.g. by being a lower version). END OF QUOTE By setting fedora-epel to a lower priority, the if a package we want is only in fedora-epel, we'll grab it from there. But if that package has a dependency on another package version X that can be found in fedora-epel and for some reason oracle-epel supplies only package version X-1, what happens then? Is dnf smart enough to pick the higher-versioned (and required) package from fedora-epel even though it has a lower priority. I'll try to explain that again. I want to install Foo, which is only in fedora-epel. Foo requires Bar version 2.0. Bar 2.0 exists in fedora-epel, but oracle-epel has only Bar version 1.0. What happens then? Someone is smarter then Red Hat/IBM, "Carpe Diem": Announcing Open-sourced & Community-Driven RHEL Fork by CloudLinux (https://blog.cloudlinux.com/announcing-open-sourced-community-driven-rhel-f…) CentOS is a fork of Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) and undoubtedly a popular choice to deploy on production servers because of its rock-solid stability and compatibility. But, now with CentOS Stream, Red Hat just killed CentOS as we know it. And as expected, people started to fork Red Hat to give a viable community-based alternative to RHEL. As we already maintain CloudLinux OS, we plan to release a free, open-sourced, community-driven, 1:1 binary compatible fork of RHEL® 8 (and future releases) in the Q1 of 2021. We will create a separate, totally free OS that is fully binary compatible with RHEL® 8 (and future versions). We will sponsor the development & maintenance of such OS. We will work on establishing a community around the OS, with the governing board from members of the community. Oracle Linux 8 - short experiment with install and basic setup of Mate Desktop

So after reading other folks' opinions of an Oracle Linux 8 (thanks again, Nicolas!) trial installation, I decided to crank up a Virtual Box session and try an install myself. As others have stated, what you get when you install OL8 is identical in every way to what you see when installing Centos 8; literally the only difference is the logo and the default desktop background. There are no demands for registration or anything else when you install OL8. It's exactly the same experience as installing Centos 8. Since I use Mate on my computers (installed from https://copr.fedorainfracloud.org/coprs/stenstorp/MATE/ ) I immediately decided to see if I can get that going. I ran into two small issues, both easily dealt with. First, the PowerTools repo doesn't seem to exist under that name on OL8. It's called ol8_codeready_builder, for some reason. "dnf-config-manager --set-enabled ol8_codeready_builder" works fine and gets us where we need to be. A slightly more serious issue is that the oracle-epel, found through the rpm named oracle-epel-release-el8, appears to be less complete that the original Fedora epel found at https://dl.fedoraproject.org/pub/epel/epel-release-latest-8.noarch.rpm. Mate requires ImageMagick as a dependency for caja-image-converter and if you have oracle-epel installed it can't find ImageMagick. The solution (at least the solution that I used, which worked) is just to delete the oracle-epel-release-el8 rpm and install epel-release-latest-8 rpm instead. Then the Mate desktop can be installed on OL8 from the copr rpms listed above. Ultimately, the take-away here seems to be that if you decide to use OL8 instead of Centos 8 you'll be better advised to stick with "real" epel and not the oracle epel since there appears to be at least some stuff missing on the oracle epel. After I jumped through those minor hoops, what I ended up with was an Oracle Linux 8 installation with a Mate desktop and literally everything looks and works identical to what I already have with Centos 8. (An issue that I haven't seen anyone address yet is this. It's my understanding that epel builds their stuff on the current RHEL. I've understood iptables well enough for a long, long time, and although I think firewall-cmd is a poor replacement for iptables, I've always been able to "get it to work" by comparing output with iptables -L or iptables -S and using a direct-rule or two. And this time, I'm just baffled. I have a qemu VM running on a host. Postgresql runs on the host, and I'm trying to connect to the Postgresql server on the host from the VM. Debug information packages for 8.3 missing?

Dear all, after the upgrade from 8.2 to 8.3 one of the applications we use has unclear Kerberos authentication issues. I was going to diagnose these and tried: yum debuginfo-install krb5-libs However, I get: Could not find debuginfo package for the following installed packages: krb5-libs-1.18.2-5.el8.x86_64 Could not find debugsource package for the following installed packages: krb5-libs-1.18.2-5.el8.x86_64 Checking on http://debuginfo.centos.org/8/x86_64/Packages/ , I do indeed not find these packages, also glibc and other debug info packages are missing. Are they still being uploaded, or am I using a wrong repository? Thanks and cheers, Oliver

Question on nmcli CentOS 8

I am trying to modify the current eth0 with nmcli I ran this: nmcli con mod eth0 ipv4.addr 192.168.1.15/22 gw4 192.168.1.1 ipv4.dns 192.168.1.14 and now nmcli shows (two ipv4) addresses. inet4 192.168.1.15/22 inet4 192.168.2.212/22 I think the original connection was DHCP... the 2.212 item listed. So I want to change the original DHCP to a static network - how do I do that? I only want the one address not two. So now I need to "remove" both or all and add the 1 I want as static ? how do I do that? Thanks, Jerry

8-stream dnf overly verbose

In moving a test machine from 8.3 to 8-stream the main thing I've noticed is that dnf has become very verbose. It's as if someone has turned on the -v permanently. I've tried using '-q' (it says nothing then) and I've tried adjusting the debuglevel, but nothing seems to affect it. CentOS 8 Stream: The Good, The Bad, The Ugly

Hello All- After reading and digesting a ton of community chatter about the recent CentOS announcement I've come to the conclusion that there's a lot of good about this, but there are also a lot of concerns that are being ignored. And nobody so far has stared directly into the eyes of the elephant in the room. So here goes. The Good: From a technical perspective- both in the sense of "getting newer software" and "technical community being more involved in bugfixes, etc"- having *a version* of CentOS called "AppStream" is fantastic. The various RedHat and CentOS folks who have been extolling these virtues in blog posts and twitter feeds are right-on. But from responses I've seen, it appears to me that they think that these virtues are enough to completely gloss over the complete and utter clusterfrackas they've caused. The Bad: No point releases. There is POSITIVELY NO* REASON that they can't have AppSream and still do point releases. Brand new stuff would go into AppStream, at some point they do a point release of RHEL, then follow the normal CentOS procedure to spin a CentOS build of that point release. This is already a tried and true process. It will cost RedHat all of what, low five digits (if that) in developer salary to do this. Heck I'm sure some volunteers would step up to use the existing infrastructure if RedHat didn't want to spend any paid developer time on this. The Ugly: I denoted "NO* REASON" above because there actually *are* reasons that we are not privy to. https://twitter.com/JoshuaPKr/status/1336744681716244480 Since RedHat is not being transparent with this, we are forced to speculate and remain bewildered at why they would make a decision that is going to cost them so much in the long run. The most common (and most likely) theory is that some MBA somewhere in middle management saw all of this CentOS being used in production environments (and otherwise downloaded for free), and had the idea that if CentOS had its head cut off people would just buy RHEL subscriptions. That may happen in a few cases, but for the most part, that is NOT what is going to happen. By handling the CentOS situation in this way, RedHat has branded itself as a company that acts in bad faith. If a company acts in bad faith towards a community where non-monetary value is exchanged, WHY would you trust that company to hold up its obligations for contracts that are actually paid? People are going to do whatever they can to get away from RedHat. Debian, Ubuntu, SuSE will all benefit from this. Even in cases where non-profits and other similar clients "contact RedHat about options because Stream won't meet their needs"- why would such entities have ANY reason to trust anything that RedHat says to them? There have been hundreds of other messages that describe exactly what RedHat loses in this deal so I won't go into that here. But branding oneself as a "bad faith actor" is usually a terrible way to try to pick up a little bit of subscription revenue. In the end it's going to be a losing scenario. This is an absolutely UNMITIGATED DISASTER from a marketing and community goodwill standpoint. It can, however, be mitigated if RedHat backtracks, admits their mistake, and affirmatively commits to support future CentOS point releases. I'll be interested to see how this turns out. --JK

Have lost access to ZFS pools with latest CentOS 8 kernels

With the release of the vmlinuz-4.18.0-240.x and vmlinuz- 4.18.0.193.19.x kernels, ZoL cannot connect with a ZFS pool. I'm not 100% sure, but I believe the last CentOS 8 kernel to work with ZFS 0.8.5 was 4.18.0.6.x. Obviously CentOS does not support ZFS, so this means the ZoL folks must find and fix the problem. Otherwise, I think Fedora 33 is the only choice we have for hosting ZFS. --Doc Savage Fairview Heights, IL

Hello, I just tried installing a VM from the stream ISO and it worked; the only thing I would like to have changed as a default config is GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX=".... net.ifnames=0 ..." the reason, I find eth0, eth1, eth2 easier to use than cryptic names like ens33 or ens0p3 or so; Walter p.s. can someone tell in as short as possible what this CentOS Stream is in comparison to CentOS 8?

Current CentOS Stream already the downstream of the upcoming RH EL 8.4?

RH EL 8.3 released at the end of October 2020. Planned 8.4 would be at the end of April 2021. Now that CentOS has bridged the gap with 8.3 + updates, can we tell that what is going into Stream right now will begin to be the upcoming RH EL 8.4 and so that in the next five months we will get a real scenario of what is planned up to 2024? Update path question in connection with CentOS Stream?

Hello, when someone has installed a CentOS 7.1 in the past, and did 'yum update' regularily, his/she got a CentOS 7.8 now without any reinstallation procedure or other complications; when the same wanted to update to CentOS 8 he/she had to do a new install; what happens to CentOS Stream? when some is now installing CentOS Steam and will do 'dnf update' or 'yum update' regularily in the future, what does he/she get till the "end"? is this a rolling release like Win10 which doesn't need to be reinstalled now and in future? (the fact that hardware can break is not the question) Thanks, Walter

I would like to know the opinion of the CentOS developers on the decision to end CentOS. Because people already made his voice heard... What do you think? Is it a great decision and master play of business? Because you know 'devops-container-facebook-intel-thing' and "hey is the inevitable train of history? "Adapt or die?" Really? How could you explain what hundred of people around the world that already implemented CentOS 8 and helped reporting bugs, many of them cannot afford RH subscription? How could somebody trust on a company that one day happily says "if you don't like CentOS Stream, pay us?" and sents to trash a project of 16 years? Did nobody know what Red Hat was working on this? Moving to CentOS 8 Stream

It's got to be done, so may as well test it ... The FAQ says to do: dnf install centos-release-stream dnf distro-sync This I did and everything went fine. I checked before doing the distro- sync and there was a load of new Stream repos in /etc/yum.repos.d Rebooted the machine and dnf has gone back to only looking in 8.3, and the stream repos had disappeared. Looking in the logs I can see this: 2020-12-09T12:28:42Z DEBUG ---> Package centos-stream-release.noarch 8.4-1.el8 will be installed 2020-12-09T12:28:42Z DEBUG ---> Package centos-linux-release.noarch 8.3-1.2011.el8 will be obsoleted 2020-12-09T12:28:42Z DEBUG ---> Package centos-release-stream.x86_64 8.1-1.1911.0.7.el8 will be obsoleted and Installing: centos-stream-release noarch 8.4-1.el8 Stream-BaseOS 21 k replacing centos-linux-release.noarch 8.3-1.2011.el8 replacing centos-release-stream.x86_64 8.1-1.1911.0.7.el8 The centos-stream-release RPM does not contain any repo information, that was all in centos-release-stream that has been removed. So stream has deleted itself. It's not a good start. I also can't seem to get back to a sensible system and have now got a system with a mixture of CentOS 8 and CentOS 8 Stream RPMs with no way of installing the Stream repos from an RPM. I see that "subscription-manager" has been installed on this system now which it never was. Is CentOS also going to be part of that ecosystem as well? Fortunately this was a throw-away install. I hope no one has tried the instructions in the FAQ on an important machine! P.

Can someone site any authoritative documentation concerning the security issues extant in NIS? My plan is to set up NIS and NFS on my home network server where I plan to host all the local home network /home directories. The list is swamped with news about CentOS 8 dying in a year and becoming stream Linux. IWeve been here before, folks. I remember when Red Hat Linux disappeared to become the Feodra / Red Hat Enterprise we know today, which gave birth to White Box Enterprise Linux, Scientific Linux, and CentOS. WBEL and SL slowly faded and CentOS won out. And then CentOS, eventually folding into RedHat, promised everyone that it had the support of Red Hat - now part of IBM. Well, now we're back to the big announcement: Red Hat (IBM) is going to mix it up again. And now, as before, come the clones: Rocky Linux has been announced... https://www.reddit.com/r/RockyLinux/comments/ka0qlv/ meet_rocky_linux_new_rhel_fork_by_the_original/ If history is any guide, you'll change a line somewhere in /etc/yum.d and then run yum update to switch over. Hello all-- I recently did a bulk update from 8.2 to 8.3. I am having some odd issues with it not recognizing my NVIDIA Quadro P1X00 graphics card properly. In graphical mode, it only shows ONE display resolution and also my system can not find firmware -- intel/sof/sof-cml.ri Any idea about what to do flor either of these issues? dnf script to cherry pick updates and maintain RHEL compatibility

Here's an idea, though I don't know if it would be practical. I assume that at some point everything that goes into RHEL and its "official" updates travels through the Stream ecosystem beforehand. So what about the idea of maintaining (somewhere) a list of official updates to RHEL as they are released, and then have some kind of a dnf enhancement or script that reads that list and updates a local Centos installation using only the rpms on the list and ignoring everything else. Stuff that's released to Stream would be downloaded and installed at the point where it has been released for RHEL and not before. It needs an architecture and then some additional pathing to get to packages. After adding the C6.10 entries to the Vault repo did you turn off the entries (e.g., set "enabled=" to "0") in the non-vault repos? If you don't yum will still try them. The CentOS-Base.repo is on by default so you'll either need to add the "enabled=" line to each of the entries or otherwise disable the repos.

CentOS-8(2011): osbuild - missing selinux subpackage?

Briefly, while updating some workstation I came across this. The update to CentOS-8(2011) passes without issues (because best=False). So, I guess that all packages landed at the mirror host - but osbuild-selinux is missing? # LANG=C yum update Last metadata expiration check: 0:00:39 ago on Tue Dec 8 01:18:19 2020. CentOS 8.2: error running non-shared postrotate script for /var/log/mysql/mysqld.log

Hello fellow CentOS users! I have installed CentOS 8.2.2004 with the following packages: mysql-common-8.0.21-1.module_el8.2.0+493+63b41e36.x86_64 mysql-8.0.21-1.module_el8.2.0+493+63b41e36.x86_64 mysql-errmsg-8.0.21-1.module_el8.2.0+493+63b41e36.x86_64 mysql-server-8.0.21-1.module_el8.2.0+493+63b41e36.x86_64 Then I have run mysql_secure_installation and among other things set the root password for MySQL As result I am greeted with the following anachron mail every morning: /etc/cron.daily/logrotate: mysqladmin: connect to server at 'localhost' failed error: 'Access denied for user 'root'@'localhost' (using password: NO)' error: error running non-shared postrotate script for /var/log/mysql/mysqld.log of '/var/log/mysql/mysqld.log ' I understand that the reason is me having set the root password for MySQL. But my question is how to provide the password to postrotate without disclosing it too much? Other than that the MySQL works well, I use it to host 3 Wordpress websites at my CentOS 8 Linux server (haproxy -> Jetty x 3 -> FastCGI -> php-fpm -> Wordpress -> MySQL) Greetings from Germany Alex

Hi, folks, It seems I can't run a version of calibre newer than 3.23 without at least one library from gcc-5 (and the calibre attitude seems to be "screw you, 4's ancient, move to another distro"). I've added the scl repo - what devtoolset do I need to install? mark

/dev/mapper/cl-root filesystem corrupted?

A client's (truly ancient) file server running CentOS 7 suddenly started misbehaving, and I believe the ext4 filesystem on /dev/mapper/cl-root may be corrupted. A reboot fails with a file system check and drops me into maintenance mode. I tried booting from a live C7 DVD and as root running e2fsck. It complains that the superblock could not be read and suggests running "e2fsck -b 8193 <device>". That also fails. Is there a way to more forcefully "encourage" e2fsck to do its job without totally destroying that filesystem? --Doc Savage Fairview Heights, IL

ntpdate past CentOS 7

So ntpdate is no longer present past CentOS 7. Many times people want "internal" NTP servers - not opening firewalls to allow external pool.ntp.org kind of stuff. ntpdate was "nice" in that I could just run once a day as "ntpdate name" and all good. Is there a similar client for CentOS 8 ? I saw chrony - but does not seem to be a command line command and I would also have to edit a file - Both are not desirable. Just looking for a simple - flexible command like I have been using "ntpdate name" for CentOS 8. Thanks, Jerry

Retrieving files from dd backup

Running CentOS 7 I have a previously combined backup of a disk with three partitions using dd. I now need to restore one single file from this backup and after perusing the internet, specifically https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/31669/is-it-possible-to-mount-a-gz…, I have done the following: - installed squashfs-tools - installed kpartx - made a squash image of the dd backup and mounted it - used kpartx to create devices for the three partitions under /dev/mapper/loopNpP - I can now mount the first partition, which is the EFI partition, and access it - the second partition, the boot partition, fails to mount since it has the same UUID as the disk I am using in the computer, and of which it is an earlier dd backup. Since I am not interested in the boot partition - at least not right now - I moved on. - I am, however, interested in the third partition which is LUKS encrypted. Running 'cryptsetup luksOpen /dev/sda3 my_encrypted_volume' I can decrypt it with the password - trying to mount the decrypted version with 'mount /dev/mapper/my_encrypted_volume /media/my_device' results in a failure message 'mount: unknown filesystem type 'LVM2_member' - another website, https://askubuntu.com/questions/766048/mount-unknown-filesystem-type-lvm2-m…, suggests I could run vgdisplay to get the UUID and then rename it using vgrename But, vgdisplay shows only one vg and I am afraid to rename the VG UUID shown by vgdisplay since it might refer to the VG currently in use... Does anyone have any insight or suggestions into the above and how to proceed while being absolutely certain I will not be messing up the running part of the system? Thanks!

Just installed the above USB webcam but it is not recognized by dmesg | grep usb, nor does Zoom recognize it. I was under the understanding it should not require a driver, or? I am running CentOS 7. Thanks.

Selecting a Desktop

Folks Some of my users like GNOME, some like XFCE, and there's even a MATE lover out there. And some would like to change desktops from time to time. Is there some way to allow a user to choose her own desktop? I can envision at least two ways this might be done: 1) Present a user with a command-line login, and have a program (let's call it 'gui') so the user could type in "gui g" for gnome, "gui m' for mate, and so on. 2) Present a uses with a gui login-in screen, which also includes a desktop selector. Of course, it would only offer those desktops which are installed. Is there such? Gui-Confused David

EFI System Partition on RAID 1 array

Hi, I'm currently writing a little documentation on how to install CentOS 7 on manually partitioned disks, e. g. boot in Rescue Mode first, partition using fdisk or gdisk, reboot, start the installer and use the installer to format these partitions. I have a total of 9 (3 x 3) situations: * single disk (BIOS+MBR, BIOS+GPT, UEFI) * RAID 1 on 2 disks (BIOS+MBR, BIOS+GPT, UEFI) * RAID 6 on 4 disks (BIOS+ BR, BIOS+GPT, UEFI) Everything works fine so far and I've completed seven out of nine of these setups. But right now I'm stuck with a problem on how to manually setup RAID 1 with UEFI. Here's what I do. Fire up gdisk on /dev/sda. Create 4 RAID partitions (FD00): * 200 MB for /dev/md/EFI * 500 MB for /dev/md/boot * 4 GB for /dev/md/swap * 55 MB for /dev/md/root Create the RAID arrays: # mdadm --create /dev/md/EFI --level=1 --raid-devices=2 \ --metadata=1.2 /dev/sda1 /dev/sdb1 mdadm: array /dev/md/boot started # mdadm --create /dev/md/boot --level=1 --raid-devices=2 \ --metadata=1.2 /dev/sda2 /dev/sdb2 mdadm: array /dev/md/boot started # mdadm --create /dev/md/swap --level=1 --raid-devices=2 \ --metadata=1.2 /dev/sda3 /dev/sdb3 mdadm: array /dev/md/swap started # mdadm --create /dev/md/root --level=1 --raid-devices=2 \ --metadata=1.2 /dev/sda4 /dev/sdb4 mdadm: array /dev/md/root started And then I reboot, fire up the installer and assign these RAID arrays respectively to the EFI system partition as well as /boot, swap and /. Unfortunately I won't even reach the GRUB menu on boot. Only thing I get after the initial reboot is the EFI shell. Now I've tried this again, this time partitioning *and* formating using Anaconda. * one mountpoint for /boot/efi (RAID 1) * one mountpoint for /boot (RAID 1) * one mountpoint for swap (RAID 1) * one mountpoint for / (RAID 1) After the initial reboot, everything works fine. EFI on a RAID 1 array apparently works. So what am I missing and/or doing wrong in my manual setup? CentOS 7 disk identifier

Are disk identifiers important in CentOS? I have two disks that used to be in a Intel fake RAID1 configuration and I now see have identical disk identifiers of 00000000-0000-0000-0000000000. I now want to use only one of them and later use mdraid for a software RAID1 configuration. Googling suggests that: (1) disk identifiers are /not/ important and (2) they are using the format 0x12345678. However fdisk -l displays the disk identifiers of my disks in the long UUID format. Further, another disk in the system does use a long UUID. Last, googling suggests there is confusion between disk identifiers and partition UUIDs. I am specifically asking about the former.

Hi, I've started migrating my sites to mariadb which is supposed to be a drop-in replacement of mysql. Both run on the same C6 box. DB folders were moved to a new location after both DB servers were stopped and properly upgraded. There were no reboots or power failures. firewall-cmd - bug or bad design

In my firewall I use an ipset as a geographical blacklist. A single addresses can be entered into the blacklist using CIDR notation or not, i.e. 111.222.111.222/32 OR 111.222.111.222 while a block of IP addresses can be entered using CIDR notation: 111.222.111.0/24 Both the ipset and firewall-cmd commands have ways to ask if an address has already been entered into the blacklist. The basic syntax is ipset test <blacklist> <ip_addr> firewall-cmd --ipset=<blacklist> --query-entry=<ip_addr> With ipset I can test a single address using CIDR or not regardless of how it was entered. If the entry was a block of addresses, any address within the block is reported as "in the ipset". firewall-cmd responds differently. If I entered "111.222.111.222/32" (i.e. using CIDR) into the list, firewall-cmd reports the address as "NOT entered" if I query the simple form "111.222.111.222" even though they are the same single address. Conversely, if the original entry was simple, the CIDR form is reported as "NOT entered". With block entries like 111.222.111.0/24, any address within the block is reported as "NOT entered"! Only the actual string entered, 111.222.111.0/24, is considered "entered". I use these types of queries to decided whether an ip address is already being blocked. Clearly relying the firewall-cmd query would lead to unnecessary entries. What do you think, Should I consider this simply a poor design decision or a reportable "bug"? -- Jon H. Reminder: CentOS 6 EOL on 30 November 2020

All, This is a friendly reminder. CentOS 6.10 will EOL at the end of November 2020. During the first week in December 2020, the 6.10 directory will move to vault.centos.org Packages will still be available at: http://vault.centos.org/centos/6.10/ However, once moved, there will be no more updates pushed to vault.centos.org. Therefore, security issues will no longer be fixed, etc. You should take the rest of the month to either move to a newer versoin of CentOS Linux ... or to procure Extended el6 support from Red Hat (EUS RHEL 6). [rdo][centos8][repos] CentOS8 RDO-USSURI repo missing openvswitch2.13

Hi all, I have an issue, in CentOS8 repos for RDO. It is refering to openvswitch2.13 name, but in the repos I can see openvswitch packages with version in version field, looks like in dependency field it is missing dash (-) or smth... here is a paste of repos and error message [0]. Or any other way how this could be fixed? thanks. and packages I can see [1] here. Firefox, C-7, and... reboot?

Last night, for the second or third time since I upgraded from C6 to c7 this summer, I did something on firefox - I think it was reload a page, and my system rebooted. Yes, I have a ton of tabs open. I see nothing suspicious in /var/log/messages, or in /var/log/dmesg.old. I saw a mention of boltd? I think, but nothing more. Has anyone else had this problem? mark

Problem upgrading from 8.0 to 8.1

Hi, I want to upgrade from 8.0 to 8.1 but yum update does not work. Still 8.0 Probably the cause is that I compiled DRBD myself because it was not available for 8.0 when I set up the machine. CentOS 7, as a 6in4 server

Hello, I have a VPS at a hoster where I got 3 /64 ipv6 prefixes/subnets, that are routed; one for the VPS itself - let us call this srvprefix one for the tunnel, only ::1 (server side) and ::2 (home side) are used - let us call this tunnelprefix and one for my network at home - let us call this homeprefix now I'm just in test state, a CentOS VM is the other end of the tunnel; (when the server runs well, my CentOS ZBOX will become the other end of the tunnel) at the server the eth0 device has serverprefix::1, the sit1 device has tunnelprefix::1 the routing is set with /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/route6-sit1 tunnelprefix::2 dev sit1 homeprefix::/64 via tunnelprefix::2 dev sit1 in sysctl.conf these are set net.ipv6.conf.all.forwarding = 1 net.ipv6.conf.all.proxy_ndp = 1 now I have to do these ip -6 neigh add proxy homeprefix::1 dev eth0 ip -6 neigh add proxy homeprefix::### dev eth0 the question, can I do something to avoid these "ip -6 neigh ..."? if yes, what? and how? can the hoster do something? if yes, what? CentOS and mdadm

Hi, I'm regularly using software RAID for my CentOS storage servers, either with RAID 1 or RAID 6 depending on the number of disks. Here's two questions about mdadm I've always been wondering about. 1. I'm not sure about the --metadata option. Let's say I want to create a simple RAID 1 setup, I'm usually doing it like this: # mdadm --create /dev/md/boot --level=1 --raid-devices=2 \ --metadata=1.2 /dev/sda1 /dev/sdb1 If anyone can explain the exact meaning of --metadata, I'd be grateful. Oh, and is it OK to use --metadata=1.2 in CentOS 7.x and 8.x ? 2. I'm regularly encountering the mdadm --misc option in various tutorials on the Internet. I looked it up in mdadm's manpage, but it doesn't seem to be documented. Any idea what this option does ? Physical position of swap partition on the disk

Hi, Here's a question to the fine-tuning gurus. Yesterday while installing a fresh CentOS server, I wondered how big of a deal the physical position of the swap partition on the disk is. Here's an example of a simple MBR partitioning scheme on a legacy BIOS machine with a 60 GB SSD: * /dev/sda1: 500 MB /boot ext2 * /dev/sda2: 4 GB swap * /dev/sda3: 55 GB / ext4 In the old (Slackware) days, I created the partitions manually using fdisk. Now when I do something similar in Anaconda, I have to reason in terms of mount points. So in a similar order I create the /boot partition, the swap partition and the root partition. What happens here is that Anaconda will always invert the root and swap partitions and put the swap partition at the end of the disk. So my setup looks like this: * /dev/sda1: 500 MB /boot ext2 * /dev/sda2: 55 GB / ext4 * /dev/sda3: 4 GB swap I'd be curious to know what's the reason behind this, and if this kind of configuration detail is really significant. Anaconda : MBR vs. GPT

Hi, I've always been a bit puzzled by the fact that Anaconda provides no option to manually create a partition table and specify if it's MBR or GPT. >From what I can tell - at least under CentOS 7.x - Anaconda will default to MBR, even if I specify a BIOS Boot partition. Maybe it switches automatically to GPT if the disk size requires it ( > 2 TB IIRC) though I don't have any corresponding hardware here to test it. Is this documented somewhere? Or is there a nifty little trick to tell Anaconda to prefer GPT partition tables? Emulate Ghost4Linux with standard Linux commands?

Hi, I'm currently trying to solve a tricky problem, and I don't even know if it's possible. Let me describe the situation with a practical example. In my office I have a sandbox PC for testing various setups that can't be tested in a virtual machine. I'm using this machine to test various setups with the Linux distributions I'm using, namely CentOS 7, CentOS 8 and OpenSUSE Leap 15. I have a series of Ghost images of these systems on a local FTP server, and I'm using G4L (Ghost4Linux) to transfer these images to and from the server. * https://sourceforge.net/projects/g4l/ On a side note, I take care of zeroing unused disk space in order to get relatively compact disk images like this: # dd if=/dev/zero of=/0bits bs=20M ; rm -f /0bits Besides my local sandbox machine, I also have a sandbox server in a datacenter, which I'm using for testing Internet-facing stuff. I'd like to be able to do something similar with this public machine, e. g. backup the whole disk content completely agnostic in terms of partitions and file systems and send it to a public FTP server. Unfortunately I can't boot G4L on this server, since I don't have physical access to the machine. The datacenter is about 700 km from where I can live. What I can do: fire up a rescue console via an administration web interface and boot a live Linux system, either Ubuntu 16.04 or 18.04. Now here's the question. From within my live system, how could I compress my system into a compact image and then send it to a distant FTP server? And once this is done, how could I get my image back from the server? dnf via ansible fails if baseurl is used on CentOS 8

Hi, I ran into an odd issue on CentOS 8, anyone seen this? When repos are configured to use baseurl instead of mirrorlist, the ansible dnf module fails. It is as if it is ignoring the baseurl configuration. #mirrorlist=http://mirrorlist.centos.org/?release=$releasever&arch=$basearch&repo=BaseOS&infra=$infra baseurl=http://my.local.repo.server/$contentdir/$releasever/BaseOS/$basearch/os/ If trying to use the dnf module in ansible, dnf is still trying to find a mirror to use and fails. ansible test-build-0 -m dnf -a "name=zsh state=present" test-build-0 | FAILED! => { "changed": false, "msg": "Failed to download metadata for repo 'BaseOS': Cannot download repomd.xml: Cannot download repodata/repomd.xml: All mirrors were tried", "rc": 1, "results": [] } Using dnf locally from the command line works fine with baseurl If I re-configure with repos using mirrorlist again, ansible dnf works as expected. Replacing SW RAID-1 with SSD RAID-1
