Hi All, I was wondering if anyone knew of a way to notify or log when a specific remote port is openened? I have an old LDAP server that I am looking to get rid of, but there is still a few queries reaching it. The sytem authentication is setup correctly (as is Postfix), so I am thinking there must be some script or program that is setup to query the older LDAP server. I tried using lsof -i|grep 389, but I am not quick enough to get results before the socket is closed. Is there any program or script I could write to detect when this socket gets opened, and what PID and/or program owns it? Thanks, Eric Falbe

clamav

Every time I update my system with clamav, it doesn't restart and freshclam no longer works, because of a permission issue on the log directory. Each time I update clamav I have to search the Internet to figure out what there is to do. That NEVER helps so I try different combinations on user and group in amavis-new and clamav configuratio files, until I eventually get them both to work. I am getting clamav and amavisd update from the epel repo. What can I do to prevent this from happening? Emmett

I'm not sure if this is helpful to anyone else and I can't decide if it's mildly clever or just a stupid pet trick, really. I recently decided to reinstall my work laptop with centos. as part of the install I used an 8g sandisk USB drive; it's roughly the size of a wireless mouse receiver. I put /boot, / and /usr on the USB drive, set encrypted partitions for swap, /home, /opt, /var and put them as well as the boot loader the internal drive. so now the USB drive is quite literally acting like a 'key' for whole laptop. with no drive, the laptop comes up to an error like 'No OS found' or something of the like. anyway, not sure anyone else will find it useful, helpful, interesting or anything else, but I felt like sharing, I guess.

EFI & grub on a Dell PowerEdge T20...

OK, I have installed CentOS 6.5 on this beast using parted to make GPT partitions (royal PIA, but done). The machine has three 500G SATA disks with 4K sector sizes. Partitioned with three partions for each of the main disks: sda1 => FAT32 => /boot/efi sdb1 => FAT32 => (not presently mounted, but will be a backup copy of /boot/efi). sda2, sdb2 => /dev/md0 => ext4 => /boot sda3, sdb3 => /dev/md1 => LVM VG, containing /, /home, swap, soon others sdc1 => will be an ext4 and will hold backups. I went into the BIOS and added a UEFI boot option using sda1: "C:\EFI\redhat\grub.efi", but this boots to the grub shell. USB-3.0 on C6.5 ??

Just wondering if there are any known issues with USB 3.0 storage devices in Centos 6.5?? I just got one of these: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817332028 it does either esata or USB 3.0. My new motherboard (ASUS M5A99X EVO R2.0) supports both, so I've tried both (of course, can't have a feature without at least giving it a whirl! :)). esata seems to work fine, I can copy gigs 'n gigs of data to it using the esata connection. however, with USB3 it works for a bit then something goes wonky... After copying some hundreds of megabytes (and I don't know if it is a consistent number or not) suddenly my C6 box starts reporting write errors. some investigation shows that /dev/sdc (and /dev/sdc1) no longer exist on the system. it takes a reboot to get it back. After which it'll work for a while then the same thing all over again. I've tried a different USB 3.0 cable but it makes no difference. hello, I'm running apache 2.2.24 and php 5.2.17. The web site that it's service turns into a 403 Forbidden error every 5 minutes literally. I've found that doing a chmod -Rv 775 on the web root restores the site. However this is a band-aid and no real solution. I've combed through all the cron jobs in /var/spool/cron both on this machine and the one it was recently transferred from. And I can find absolutely NO evidence of any rsync jobs or chowns or anything similar that could be affecting that directory. What I need to do is to figure out how to determine what exactly is changing the permissions on that directory's files so that I can put an end to it. Right now I have a chown -Rv 775 running on the directory every 5 minutes. But that is just going to contribute to load and can't be a permanent solution. The directory in question is on an NFS share. However I am unsure of that being the cause. I'm afraid that I am at a loss for troubleshooting steps here. Centos/RHEL 64bit and ARM questions

I am digging a bit into RHEL 7 roadmap info. It seems there are statements that RHEL 7 will only support 64 bit. Is this corrent, and what for Centos 7? Also the ARM info I found was the target is ARMv8 which is 64 bit, not the ARMv7 which is 32bit. Any clearification is appreciated.

The state of xfs on CentOS 6?

We're looking at getting an HBR (that's a technical term, honkin' big RAID). What I'm considering is, rather than chopping it up into 14TB or 16TB filesystems, of using xfs for really big filesystems. The question that's come up is: what's the state of xfs on CentOS6? I've seen a number of older threads seeing problems with it - has that mostly been resolved? How does it work if we have some *huge* files, and lots and lots of smaller files? mark

Hi, All The freebsd(version: 10.0, RC3) can't be installed as kvm guest based on CentOS 6.5(kernel: kernel-2.6.32-431.17.1.el6.x86_64, qemu-kvm: qemu-kvm-0.12.1.2 -2.415.el6_5.8.x86_64). When installing it, it always shows 'booting' and hangs. I'm trying to create a 6.5 VM on a 6.5 system using virt-install... # virt-install --network bridge:br0 --name kfat --ram=2048 --vcpus=2 --disk path=/var/lib/libvirt/images/kfat.img,size= 16 --cdrom=/home/downloads/CentOS-6.5-x86_64-minimal.iso I get through the first part of the installation, asks for disk layout (I leave default, tell it to take the whole vdisk), networking (I setup a static IP), then bombs with an error that it can't mount / not sure what to do next. -- john r pierce 37N 122W somewhere on the middle of the left coast

We're trying to build a rich media website, and will need to re-encode the video content with ffmpeg. Unfortunately, the ffmpeg version that comes with the most common repos are rather out of date. As in 0.6.5 vs 2.21 being the most current version. However, ffmpeg looks to be a pretty thorny thing to compile with all the options we need. It appears that the FFMPEG with rpmfusion for Fedora is pretty current, 2.1.4. Is there a repo out there that anybody knows of that has a relatively current version of ffmpeg out for Centos 6? xfs and user quota

Hi, I try to enable userquota an a new xfs filesystem. Its centos 6.5, the filesystem is mounted with usrquota, the server was rebooted. I thought xfs_quota -x -c 'limit bsoft=20000m bhard=22000m username' /home would set the quota for that user. But I do get an error: Command limit not found. Did I miss something? Any hints/how to beside the official sgi xfs and redhat doc would be nice. Regards . Hey all, I'm trying to figure out a way to insert a timestamp into a log file I'm creating for a cron job I'm setting up: /usr/bin/rsync -v --min-size=1 -rlpgo -O --inplace /home/myuser/Get* root@xx.x.xx.xx:/mnt/bravotv/media/compass 2>&1 >& /tmp/rsync_user.log I've googled this but all I could find are tips on how to add the time and date to the name of the log file itself, not to the contents of the log. snmp hang reading sensors?

I have one machine (out of many with similar hardware) where snmp requests frequently time out and killing the snmpd process may take several minutes. The logs are full of entries like: ipmi_si ipmi_si.0: Error reading sensor 0. so I assume it is hanging trying to read some hardware sensor. Hello everybody, we are happy to announce that since v0.15.1, Synnefo is available for the CentOS distribution via our official RPM packages. For those unfamiliar with Synnefo [1], it is a complete open source cloud platform built on top of Google Ganeti [2], with OpenStack APIs. Synnefo is written in Python from scratch. CentOS is the first RPM-based distro officially supported, and for CentOS 6.5 we have the first step by step installation guide. authentication request

I am running centos 6.5 on a desktop. I have run it for a couple of years with few problems. Lately I have been getting a request for authentication popup that says something wants to upload software. when I refuse and click on details it says an upload failed for lack of authentication. The only clue I have is an entry in /var/log/secure that says "may 19 localhost polkitd (authority=local): operator of unix=session:/org/freedesktop/consolekit/session2 FAILED to authenticate to gain authorization for action.org/freedesktop. packagekit system upgrade for system-bus-name::1.5(gpk-update-icon (owned by unix-user:<my user name>) ( please don't nit pick the format or spelling. I couldn't figure out how to cut and paste, and my handwriting is atrocious). Everything seems to work OK but it is a pain, and maybe a security problem. I would appreciate any help. I don't have a clue.,

This a remote unit and this NIC is the management port so it is a real pain when this happens. So far it has happened twice an we have had to call someone and have them power cycle the system. Based on what I have found on the net this seems to happen a lot with this nic. We have upgraded to the latest stock CentOS kernel and added the following to the kernel command line in grub. pcie_aspm=off I've also taken the draconian measure of adding a ping to the default route in the watchdog.conf file to cause a reboot if it happens again. I have looked at the driver version in the latest long term kernel (3.10.40-1.el6.elrepo) and it shows as the same as this kernel. Centos 6.5 workaround needed for selinux "Could not open policy file" bug

I read about this bug in the Centos 6.2 faq and the link showing it fixed in https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=769859 but I am still getting it updating on a Centos 6.5 server that had selinux disabled. I want to run selinux as permissive but it won't load now on reboot. I ran the yum update to apply this latest selinux update http://lists.centos.org/pipermail/centos-announce/2014-May/020294.html for centos-release-6-5.el6.centos.11.2.x86_64. xhost: unable to open display

When I put export DISPLAY="IP address:0.0" ip address being my windows8 desktop then xhost + I get xhost: unable to open display "IP:0.0" when I try export DISPLAY=":0.0" I get the same thing. I have centos6.4 running on a late model Dell Blade Windows8 Alienware laptop I checked the xwin firewall setting and it is set to public network access (but strangely private network is grayed out) any ideas -- Dan Hyatt

ISA connected CF card not found by CentOS 6

I am attempting to install CentOS 6 on a PC104 stack and am experiencing issues with anaconda not being able to find the Compact Flash (CF) card hosted in an IDE-CF board connected via the ISA bus. Did someone finally remove the ISA capability from the kernel? On the same hardware I have been able to install CentOS 5. With the CentOS 6 install DVD, the system boots up and proceeds until it tries to find devices with 'existing CentOS installs', then after a about a minute pops a message indicating it can't find any media to install on, and gives you a choice of trying again or exiting the install. I would try on Alt-F2, to modprobe a driver if only I knew which one to use... the driver set for PATA has changed a lot between 5 & 6. I also tried booting with the CentOS 6.5 Live CD, to try probing the system a bit farther, but the Live CD seems to fail while either loading the kernel&initrd to memory or when attempting to boot the kernel. when it makes changes operations, the screen res changes and goes black but I see no further CD drive activity and keyboard presses are ignored (even CapsLock & NumLock don't change their LEDs). Anyone with clues or solutions on either issue? Even when this disclaimer is not here: I am not a contracting officer. I do not have authority to make or modify the terms of any contract.

build system for cutting edge software

Hi, I use centos as it is stable and provides all the software that is needed for everyday use. However, sometimes I would like to use fresh software that is not available as a package. Compiling from source is indeed an option but because centos uses oldish sources not only the sought package should be built but a lot of other packages. An idea is to build it in a directory, as much independent as it is possible from the installed libraries on the centos installation. Is there an automated build system for such an endeavour? - Gergely

Centos backup tools

Hi all! I'm building a raid box to use for backups, connectivity will be either USB3 or esata. Looking for suggestions on backup software I can use. I know there's rsync, which may be a good solution. I also find backupPC at epel, backintime also at epel, kbackup. DejaDup looks interesting, but none of the repos I'm set up to use shows it being available. some small details: I plan to use this to keep backups of my centos desktop, which has two 320GB drives in linux RAID-1. The backup box will have two 1TB drives, also in RAID-1. It will be a two drive enclosure with PS and cooling, with USB3 or esata, but not networking. I was thinking that it would be nice to have a full backup followed by a set of incrementals, and software that allows access to the state of the system for any specific date (similar to a source control system), but it may be that nothing free and/or uncomplicated will offer such a feature. wpa_supplicant - an utter failure, for some reason

Hello listmates, I feel a little embarrassed but I can not get through this one and any help will be much appreciated. I have a Broadcom WiFi adapter in a 64-bit CentOS 6.5 laptop. Trying to get it connect automatically - and it just would not - no error messages, nothing. With the same config NetworkManager connects without a hitch, I have to compile the wl module out of an SRPM - but after that it seemed to work fine under the NetworkManager but not automatically, via wpa_supplicant. Thanks in advance for any and all advice. The WiFi security is WPA. Cheers, Boris.

Centos 6.4 How to increase console font size.

Just installed 6.4 on and old Dell laptop and the font only takes up half the screen. I have tried setfont and altering grub.conf vga= but it does not work. I have read that I must disable uEFI but have not idea how to do that. Can anyone help? I only use this machine in console mode and I just want the full screen font size that I used to have in 5.x versions. Thanks, Richard

The web based icloud interface forces the writer to reply at the top of the email and if you try to write at the bottom by deleting a few lines of the message or selecting the whole message, deleting it, adding some spaces and then pasting back and go to the end it and adding a reply, it kills the indentation. -wes

Large file system idea

This idea is intruiging... Suppose one has a set of file servers called A, B, C, D, and so forth, all running CentOS 6.5 64-bit, all being interconnected with 10GbE. These file servers can be divided into identical pairs, so A is the same configuration (diks, processors, etc) as B, C the same as D, and so forth (because this is what I have; there are ten servers in all). Each file server has four Xeon 3GHz processors and 16GB memory. File server A acts as an iscsi target for logical volumes A1, A2,...An, and file server B acts as an iscsi target for logical volumes B1, B2,...Bn, where each LVM volume is 10 TB in size (a RAID-5 set of six 2TB NL-SAS disks). There are no file systems directly built on any of the LVM volumes. Each member of a server pair (A,B) are in different cabinets (albeit in the same machine room) and are on different power circuits, and have UPS protection. A server system called S (which has six processors and 48 GB memory, and is not one of the file servers), acts as iscsi initiator for all targets. On S, A1 and B1 are combined into the software RAID-1 volume /dev/md101. Similarly, A2 and B2 are combined into /dev/md102, and so forth for as many target pairs as one has. The initial sync of /dev/md101 takes about 6 hours, with the sync speed being around 400 MB/sec for a 10TB volume. I realize that only half of the 10-gig bandwidth is available while writing, since the data is being written twice. All of the /dev/md10X volumes are LVM PV's and are members of the same volume group, and there is one logical volume that occupies the entire volume group. An XFS file system (-i size=512, inode64) is built on top of this logical volume, and S NFS-exports that to the world (an HPC cluster of about 200 systems). In my case, the size of the resulting file system will ultimately be around 80 TB. The I/O performance of the xfs file system is most excellent, and exceeds by a large amount the performance of the equivalent file systems built with such packages as MooseFS and GlusterFS: I get about 350 MB/sec write speed through the file system, and up to 800 MB/sec read. I have built something like this, and by performing tests such as sending a SIGKILL to one of the tgtd's, I have been unable to kill access to the file system. Obviously one has to manually intervene on the return of the tgtd in order to fail/hot-remove/hot-add the relevent target(s) to the md device. Presumably this will be made easier by using persistent device names for the targets on S. One could probably expand this to supplement the server S with a second server T to allow the possibility of failover of the service should S croak. I haven't tackled that part yet. So, what failure scenarios can take out the entire file system, assuming that both members of a pair (A,B) or (C,D) don't go down at the same time? Hi list, I've a problem with my system on CentOS 6.5 x86_64 on a workstation. During utilizzation, after several hours after boot (6/7 hours) I get an error: Disabling IRQ #16 and after this seems be that 3d acceleration is unloaded. This is a workstation with a dedicated vga (nvidia gt450) and 3 nics. This problem started when I've plugged the third nic. Without third nic all works very good. from /proc/interrupt: 16: 110 647 64858 0 0 0 0 0 IO-APIC-fasteoi ehci_hcd:usb1, ahci, eth3, nvidia I've tried to boot the system with irqpool without great results. setting the device queue_depth

Hi, Due to limitations of our Storage we need to set the device queue_depth to 4. I did this with a script that basically does this: echo 4 > /sys/block/sdft/device/queue_depth. But after a few minutes it starts to grow until it reaches 32 again. What could cause that behavior? Furthermore the system doesn' t load my qlogic options. I have set them to: cat /etc/modprobe.d/qlogic.conf alias scsi_hostadapter1 qla2xxx options qla2xxx ql2xmaxqdepth=4 But the max queue depth is cat /sys/module/qla2xxx/parameters/ql2xmaxqdepth 32 Any help would be appreciated. Samba4 questions

I'm a little new to Samba when used as more than just a simple place to mount a single user to a single share, but we're now getting ready to replace our Netware servers with Samba, and I guess that means Active Directory DC. As I read more and more about this beast, I keep finding pages that indicate the samba4 rpms supplied with the Centos/RH distribution are not the full version and that I should get them from either samba.org or certain other sources that provide complete versions. These pages are a little dated, but not that old. Can anyone provide insight into what they've done in this situation and whether the samba rpms are now full versions? Most of what I have found on the web is dated around when samba4 just came out of beta through a little later. There doesn't seem to be much documentation on this subject on the web or through Amazon, so half of my time is spent searching instead of reading. A good source for reading would be appreciated as well. I can find plenty examples, just not definitive manuals. steve campbell

CENTOS and GlusterFS

Hi list, I'm planning to setup a two-node "cluster" with file replication and samba. I've used drbd in the past with success, but now there isn't drbd on the official repo but only from elrepo. I want follow centos Line and than switch to GlusterFS. Said that, I'm new to GlusterFS. I have two hosts with a 2tb disk space for replica. I've ridden that glusterfs is not compatible with smb/cifs/nfs and that for this purpose I must mount locally the volume and share it with samba and the hosts must act as client and server at the same time. It is possibile shares a mounted disk on /data with samba, and apply a replica volume on /data without using glusterfs export? Example: [Host1] [Host2] /data -> smb /data -> smb gluster_replica<---------------->gluster_replica Ip and services will be managed from corosync+pacemaker. There will be problems and complication with this configuration about replication/sync? Thanks in advance. Alessandro.

Re-mount a drive using its label name

Hello everybody, I would like your opinion on the following question, why this happens in centos and how to fix this (or a possible work around). I have a drive with no partitions and formatted with xfs filesystem. I give the drive a custom label "mydrive" and I mount it under /dev/mountpnts/mydrive. Then, I add a corresponding entry to fstab. These, are the steps I followed, mkfs.xfs -L mydrive -f /dev/sdf mkdir /dev/mountpnts/mydrive mount -L mydrive /dev/mountpnts/mydrive/ cat /etc/fstab, LABEL=mydrive /dev/mountpnts/mydrive xfs noatime,nodiratime,nobarrier,logbufs=8 0 0 These steps mount the drive under the mount point specified. If I remove the drive and insert it back in after a while, the drive doesn't mount, even though I have the required entry in fstab. `mount -a` doesn't seem to work and provides me the following output, mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sdj, missing codepage or helper program, or other error In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try dmesg | tail or so If I restart my server, the drive gets mounted in the correct mount point and works fine. Can someone please shed some light on why a restart is required to re-mount a drive and if there is way to mount the drive without a restart. Thanks, Raghuv Adhepalli.

Centos 6.5 problems with UEFI PXE and GRUB

Greetings, Im having issues booting UEFI PXE Centos 6.5 using Grub. Ive followed the configuration specifications in the documentation and yet my install always seems to hang past the grub menu at [Linux, EFI ...] Ive added ksdevice=bootif and APPENDIP 2 to ensure the proper nic is selected however this does not prevent the hang. Set static IP

Hello, I want my CentOS 6.5 computer to have a static IP. Currently I get the IP I want because I have my router assign it on the basis of mac address. I placed the following file as: /etc/sysconfig/networking-scripts/eth0 DEVICE="eth0" BOOTPROTO=static HWADDR=00:1F:D0:9E:AE:67 ONBOOT=yes TYPE=Ethernet USERCTL=no IPV6INIT=no PEERDNS=yes NETMASK=255.255.255.0 IPADDR=192.168.0.99 GATEWAY=192.168.0.1 NM_CONTROLLED=no I also disabled Network Manager with chkconfig. It didn't work. When I rebooted I had no IP address for eth0. Should I leave all the other scripts in /etc/sysconfig/networking-scripts unchanged? Suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you, Joe

Virtualising legacy CentOS 4.x servers

Dear all, I look after a number of CentOS 4.x servers running legacy applications that depend on ancient versions of various things (such as MySQL 3.x) and which can't be upgraded without non-trivial development effort. I've been considering virtualising them and as a test have been trialling with a company that uses Parallels Cloud Server 6. However, I've run into a roadblock in that the Parallels Tools installer in PCS6 require a version of glibc higher than that which is available in CentOS 4.x (v2.5 required versus v2.3.4 installed). Without the guest OS tools installed it's impossible to migrate a VM from node to node or back it up without shutting the VM down first, which is less than useful. So I have two questions: 1) Does anyone know if there is a version of the PCS6 Tools built against glibc 2.3.4 available anywhere? 2) Is there an alternative virtualisation environment I should be looking at which fully supports CentOS 4.x as a guest OS? And if so, does anyone have recommendations for a hosting supplier that offers that environment (ideally UK based). Many thanks Simon

vi : unable to copy text to other file

Hello All, I'm trying to use vi commands instead of using the mouse. I open Gnome-Terminal I open a file : vi /home/jvermeulen/.ssh/id_dsa.pub I select the key with " V " ( visual line ) I type " y " to yank the selected line. I can now use :e otherfile.txt and paste the text in otherfile.txt This is the only way I succeed in copying text to another file in Gnome-Terminal of xterm. I just updated and rebooted a VM host server which runs CentOS 6.5/x86_64. After rebooting, I can't start the virtual-manager due to the error: Error starting Virtual Machine Manager: Failed to contact configuration server; some possible causes are that you need to enable TCP/IP networking for ORBit, or you have stale NFS locks due to a system crash. Virtualization of a production environment

I need to virtualize a server, but this needs to be stable enough for production. What are the advantages/disadvantages of the different hypervisers with CENTOS ESXi (vmware) XEN KVM Primarily I will be running Centos6.4 there may or may not be a windows server. I need stability as this will be production. I will not need the equivalent of V Motion, but would like to be able to do a physical to virtual would like the capability of snapshots and to be able to backup as files on storage (I cannot do boot from SAN, but this will be SAN attached). -- Thanks, Dan

semi-OT: anyone into setup.py?

I'm trying to patch this package that I'm rpmbuilding, and its setup.py does not link a library for one extension that it dies if it doesn't have. Note that ldd is fooled, because there's a declaration, so it says everything is fine... but without a definition, it dies, and that's in the other library.... Feel free to contact me offlist. mark

Hey all, I'm trying to do a find of all files with the phrase 'varnish' in the name, but want to exclude a user home directory called /usr/local/digitalplatform. Change server name in postfix configuration

Hi, A consultant, long gone, set up postfix, dovecot, amavisd and squirrelmail for my wife. It works fine but my wife wants to change the server name from old.com to new.com so the name is more appropriate for her business. My approach would be to use sed to change all occurences of old.com to new.com. Specifically, I used grep to identify the following files where I should make the changes. /etc/postfix/main.cf /etc/dovecot/dovecot.conf /etc/squirrelmail/config.php /etc/amavisd.conf /etc/sysconfig/network (change host name) In addition, there would be an MX record for mail.new.com pointing to the IP of the server. My question is, will this work or will I corrupt my email server? If I mess it up I can always restore it to the original. Thank you, Joe

Samba problem

Hello, My only hard drive failed on a private server so I had to replace it and reinstall Centos 6.5 and Samba. My smb.conf file is OK according to "testparm". I configured smb and nmb, with chkconfig, to start when the system boots. After the system boots if I do "service nmb status" I get the response "nmbd dead but pid file exists". I can delete the pid file manually and start nmb with "service nmb start". The problem is that when the system shuts down and restarts I still find that "nmbd dead but pid file exists". Any suggestions on how to fix the problem would be much appreciated. Thank you, Joe

SSSD Passwd change problem

Hi, I have sssd set up and it mostly works how I would expect, but the ldap_chpass_uri does not seem to work correctly with the passwd command. I have two configs, one working and one not: Working: ldap_uri = ldap://ldap.example.com ldap_chpass_uri = ldap://ldap.example.com Non Working: ldap_uri = ldap://ldap3.example.com,ldap://ldap2.example.com,ldap:// ldap.example.com ldap_chpass_uri = ldap://ldap.example.com ldap.example.com is the master ldap server, and the other two are read-only consumers. I have the clients set up with sssd to use their local ldap replication, except for changing their password. With the non working config the only thing I have changed is the ldap_uri. The behavior seems like it is not using the ldap_chpass_uri directive. I can post more of the config files if needed. When I use the passwd command to update a password, the first config snippet works as expected, whereas the second does not. Any ideas? Thanks, Eric Falbe

Xnest and gnome

I still don't like gnome.... Got a user who wants the "whole gnome experience" (i.e., he can't deal w/ the command line), so I'm testing this: I'm running 6.5, KDE. On the server, I've installed both Xnest, "Gnome Desktop Environment", and "X Window System". Xnest works fine, I can start xclock, or an xterm, but if I try DISPLAY=:1, I see the taskbar and top bar start to appear on the Xnest window, and then it crashes. Most recently, I've been using Xnest -query hostname :1 to start.... I *suspect* it has something to do with .Xauthority or something in my home directory, NFS mounted, of course, on both my workstation and the server, but.... Any clues or suggestions? The messages when it crashes start with: Error: (9) Connection ":1.246" is not allowed to own the service "org.freedesktop.NetworkManagerUserSettings" due to security policies in the configuration file Xlib: extension "RANDR" missing on display ":1". OpenDKIM and SELinux

Following the most recent kernel updates I restarted our outgoing SMTP MTA which was recently reconfigured to DKIM sign messages using OpenDKIM. This morning I discovered that Postfix had stopped on that server. Whether it is related to the Postfix issue or not is yet to be determined but, in the process of getting things restarted I ran across this error with Open DKIM: # service opendkim restart Stopping OpenDKIM Milter: [FAILED] Starting OpenDKIM Milter: opendkim: /etc/opendkim.conf: refile:/etc/opendkim/TrustedHosts: dkimf_db_open(): Permission denied [FAILED] I check the permissions and ownership on the file and everything seems normal. EFI and RAID questions

Hi All; I have a new server we're setting up that supports EFI or Legacy in the bios I am a solid database guy but my SA skills are limited to what I need to get by 1) I used EFI because I wanted to create a raid 10 array with 6 4TB drives and apparently I cannot setup gpt partitions via parted in legacy mode (at least that's what I've read - is this true?) 2) I installed the OS on 2 500GB drives, I used to do all my installs with software RAID (mirrored) without LVM as follows: - create 2 raid partitions (one on each drive) for swap, /boot and / - create a raid1 device for each set of partitions above The installer would not let me proceed without a /boot/efi partition I tried to create a raid partition on each drive for this and create a /boot/efi raid disk but when I doit this way in the installer I no longer see the "EFI SYSTEM Partition" as an option for the filesystem type so this did not work either. I ended up doing hardware raid for the OS drives and software raid for the 6 4TB data drives. It works but I prefer to do software raid for everything so we ca have standard methods of monitoring for bad drives. Is there a way to setup software raid with EFI? Do I need to add a /boot/efi partition only to one of the 2 OS drives? If so how do I recover if we loose the drive with the /boot/efi partition? Is it required to use LVM to do this? CentOS 6.5 fresh install, public ssh keys cannot authenticate

Dear List, I cannot get public ssh keys to work in a fresh install of centos6.5 This might be a centos bug. I've googled for a solution. Mostly I found threads suggesting I debug sshd or run ssh -v for clues. Also I've seen threads suggesting I look at file and directory permissions. I dont think I should need to debug sshd after a fresh install. Also I think a fresh install should correctly set file and directory permissions. I think ssh should just simply work or I should see some simple documentation to make it work. Steps to reproduce this bug: Get the latest copy of virtualbox software. Get a centos6.5 dvd. Press the new button in virtualbox In the settings of the new install ask virtual box to setup a bridged adapter. Walk through the virtualbox wizard UI. When it asks for distribution point it at centos6.5 iso When the iso boots inside of virtualbox, choose to install desktop which is the first choice of choices. Eventually it will ask for a username, give the name of 'dan' and password paloalto9. When presented a login screen, login as dan. Start a terminal. try ssh: ssh dan@localhost That should prompt you for password and log you in. Also it should create ~dan/.ssh/ cd ~dan/.ssh/ do this: ssh-keygen That should create 2 files: ~dan/.ssh/id_rsa ~dan/.ssh/id_rsa.pub do this: cat ~dan/.ssh/id_rsa.pub > ~dan/.ssh/authorized_keys try: ssh dan@localhost It should log me in. Instead it prompts for password. I've walked through this type of scenario many times over the past few years and it has always worked. Currently it works well on ubuntu 12.04. I think something in centos6 might be broken? Perhaps there is a documented step somewhere which has been added to fresh centos installs which I missed? Dan

Kickstarts failing 30% of time on Dell 620 blades

I have a large set of Dell 620 blades fully populated with memory and duel socket CPUs, Centos6.4 image. I have a kickstart that I am using to pxe boot 36 blades. I have two internal drives which are raid1 (two disks formed into one, no redundancy), not san attached In the first set, 9 successfully completed. 7 more built correctly after trying another pxe boot. 2 just wont pxeboot In the second set I had 11 fail and 5 succeed and the two I tried again failed. When they fail, they go to GRUB. I try booting from disk from the drac and still get grub It looks like the complete centos kickstart occurs as it goes through the whole install before rebooting and failing. Any idea why this would happen with identical hardware, identical kickstart/image, inside the same blade chassis. Processes launched from rc*.d and ulimit -n

I'm running fedora directory server on some boxes in a multi-master arrangement. The problem is that when dirsrv is lauched from init (on boot) the maximum number of allowed file descriptors (ulimit -n) is only 4096. That means that the slapd process can only accept ~4k connections, and it needs to accept ~10k or so. The value for nofile for all users in /etc/security/limits.conf (and limits.d/*) is 65536, and as soon as I restart the process (service dirsrv restart) it comes up with ulimit -n being 64K, the way it's supposed to. Why isn't it doing this at boot? Hi all! Using C6 on an Asus M5A99X EVO R2.0 motherboard with AMD six core FX6300. That board uses Realtek ALC892 audio chipset. For the first time since I got that motherboard I tried plugging in headphones to the front panel speaker output. I was somewhat displeased to note that the speakers don't mute when that happens. I recall seeing info on that in Fedora, but not Centos, and haven't so far scared up how to troubleshoot it. I can MANUALLY change the setting in sound preferences, which offers only two choices: "Analog Output" and "Analog Headphones". Suggestions will be welcomed! I am working with HIP for Linux: http://infrahip.hiit.fi/ We are looking to some major server support on currently Centos 6 cloud images. Problem is for other distros, hipl has moved on to libnetfilter_queue which is not supported in Centos 6. See: http://bugs.centos.org/view.php?id=6698 How can we get this as part of the standard install and maintained libs? thank you.

License question: centos-indexhtml

Hi, and sorry to bug you all for something so simple: The project in which I am working would like to use CentOS, but it has very strict requirements regarding licensing. The item that I have had trouble with is centos-indexhtml-6-1.el6.centos.src.rpm. Within it, the License is only identified as 'distributable', which is not precise enough. Is there any way of contacting the author of said package, or does anyone have any clues as to what does distributable mean exactly? (preferably with references somewhere in the CentOS distribution) -Joe

su command

I am running pulseaudio on centOS 6.5 audio works fine as the user. running the command aplay /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav works fine. when I login as root and run the command su user -c "aplay /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav" it does not work. I thought su actually runs as that user... is there some "magic" to su I don't know about? How might I get that to work ? Thanks, jerry

Where would be an appropriate place to get help with the quirks of RHEL7 beta, particularly GUI usability issues? Gnome3 won't work under x2go, so I'm trying to use KDE but can't believe that anyone actually uses borderless windows where you can't tell where you are clicking near the edges, grey-background terminals or the default font set. Try using "su -" to get a login shell. For example: # su - user -c pwd /home/user # su user -c pwd /root You are trying to run pulseaudio in root's environment with the user's permissions. Format big drives (4TB) in the installer?

Hi all; I cross posted this to the fedora list since we use Fedora as a test bed from time to time, however given this is a production server we'll likely be running CentOS. we've just ordered a new server (http://www.spectrumservers.com/ssproducts/pc/viewPrd.asp?idcategory=26&idpr…) Originally I tried to simply upgrade an older server with more drive space, I installed six (6) 4TB drives and did a new CentOS 6.5 install but the OS would not allow me to configure more than 2TB per drive. Subsequent research leads me to conclude that if the bios supports UEFI and the installer boots as such then the installer should see 4TB drives without any issues. I'm also assuming that any server I order today (i.e. a more modern server) should ship with UEFI support in the bios. Are my conclusions above per UEFI correct? Thanks in advance

NFS4 idmap question

HTTPD on some of my CentOS5 systems is configured to run as user "nobody". Also, it needs access to some exported file systems. CentOS5 uses NFS3 so I changed the ownership of the files on the storage server to "nobody" to give httpd full permissions. Now I want to rebuild these systems with CentOS6 and httpd running as user "apache". The problem is how to give access to the NFS exports to these new servers while the old ones are still using the same exports. CentOS6 uses NFS4 so I was thinking to use idmap and statically map user "nobody" to local user "apache" but I can't seem to get it working. I wonder is it even possible considering that user "nobody" is a system type user? Any better ideas what I can do to give user nobody on CentOS5 and user apache on CentOS6 full access to the same NFS exported directories locally owned by user nobody? Thank you, -- Peter

files mysteriously changing ownership

We have a directory that holds the media for a website. We want that directory owned by the apache user and group. But for some reason that directory and all it's files keep reverting to being owned by a user account and group. [root@webservera ourwebsite]# ls -ld media/ drwxrwxr-x 163 user_a user_a_group 143360 Apr 29 13:29 media/ I have even setup a cron job to automate the ownership of this file to the right group to run every hour. 0 * * * * /bin/chown -R apache:apache /var/www/ourwebsite/media/ But every hour that directory keeps reverting to being owned by user_a and user_a_group. I've checked history files and crontabs for all users including root for rsync's and chowns. And I can find no evidence of what is causing this phenomenon of the directory automatically changing its' owner and group. How can I best investigate this in ways I haven't tried yet?
