kvm libvirt vms import

Hi there, I'm new to Centos. I've installed version 6.5 x86_64. I'm coming from slackware/debian utilizzation environment. I'm trying to setup libvirt and qemu-kvm, but I have some problems. I've different vms (2 centos, 2 slackware, 3 Debian) and I'm trying to import all of them. I want prefix that all of them was created from debian host and vdisk had bus=sata and format=qcow2. Importing debian I've no problem with the following command: # virt-install -n DEB -r 1024 --vcpus=2 --accelerate --os-type=linux --os-variant=debianwheezy --disk path=/path/to/deb.img,format=qcow2,bus=ide,cache=writeback --import --network=bridge:br0 --vnc -v It starts and works fine. Importing Centos 6.5 with the following command: # virt-install -n CENT1 -r 1024 --vcpus=2 --os-type=linux --os-variant=rhel6 --accelerate --disk path=/path/to/cent.img,format=qcow2,bus=ide,cache=writeback --import --network=bridge:br0 --vnc -v return an error: Starting install... On my new centos installation I have qemu-kvm-0.12.1.2, on the last Slackware system I had qemu-1.7.0 and on Debian 1.1.2+dfsg-6+deb7u2. I've also tried to reimport them on another system with Slackware and have no problem. Maybe there is a problem with version of qemu-kvm tools or some problem with img. It's possible? I can't get the real problem. Can someone point me in the right direction? Thanks in advance.

KVM Linux Guest Resolution only 1024x768

Terminal settings

So this has been bugging me for a few years now and I can always "fix" the problem, but I don't know if that's actually the correct way. So the issue is terminal emulation. I use Secure CRT (vandyke.com) to connect to any and all of my servers through SSH. Ulimit problem - CentOS 5.10

Running across some curious stuff with ulimit on CentOS 5.10. We have a non CentOS packaged version of Asterisk (using their packages) that we start at boot time with a typical RC script. Recently it started whining that it couldn't open enough file handles. As we dug further into this, it appears that at boot time, it inherits ulimit from init, which is pretty low: 1024. We've set /etc/security/limits.conf and sysctl significantly higher both for root/system wide and also for the user Asterisk runs under, to no avail. If we log in via ssh as root (or sudo) the correct root/system-wide ulimit of 8192 is set. Looking in /proc/[PID]/limits shows the lower ulimit only if the package is started from init (standard rc3.d type sysV stuff...). If we restart it via console, remote ssh, anything else, the limit bumps to 8196. Attempting to force the ulimit up inside the RC script has no effect, since the package is running as a non-root user. It fails to raise the limit. Right now, we're not totally against just taking it out of the startup and starting it manually anyway, since we really don't want the Asterisk platform coming up after a crash/reboot anyway, and any other reboots there will always be a human involved, but the way init is handling ulimit seems utterly retarded and broken. Some indication (different engineer found it, I haven't seen the RHEL case number) appears to indicate that folks wanted init ulimited heavily in case of startup DDoS type stuff, but we haven't figured out a semi-sane unix-conventional type way AROUND this when it's needed that if we were hit by the proverbial bus, a "normal" unix guy would find. Interfaces get named in a random order unless it is a Dell with the netbios naming scheme and probably then only for the motherboard NICs. Our servers generally have on-board Broadcomm and Intel cards and the names within a set may stay ordered, but the cards and motherboards will flip randomly if there are not already matching items with the correct MAC addresses in the udev rulss file (in 6.x, in 5.x having a matching MAC in the ifcfg-eth? file was enough to rename the device to match). This is just a response to your comment about windows names being difficult to know, (and a long-standing problem on its own) and doesn't relate much to the NetworkManager discussion. If you only have one (or maybe even a pair on the motherboard or a single card) you might always see the same ordering - if so consider yourself lucky because that is not the general case. We usually have to run through a drill like 'ip link ls' to get a list of interface names, then iterate through them with 'ifconfig up' and use ethtool to see which has link up, connecting one at a time. So, in my opinion, there are problems with the old system that need to be fixed, but they aren't the things that networkmanager does. A way to restore a backup to an identical machine and have the same NICs in the same positions get the old configurations would be nice. Or at least to know the names of the NICs in the same positions. (And if you go back to CentOS3 they did - detection was single threaded back then and would always probe in the same order). -- Les Mikesell lesmikesell(a)gmail.com

Ordering of disks in laptop

I have a Lenovo laptop where I recently replaced the harddisk with a Intel 530 240 Gb SSD (SATA III) on which I then installed Centos 6.5 which runs just fine albeit at SATA II speed. I then replaced the DVD-drive in the Ultrabay with an identical Intel SSD, the Ultrabay-adapter apparently uses a PATA-SATA bridge so this drive would only run at PATA speed. Being a Centos newbie, I am not sure why Centos calls the first SSD sdb and the second one in the Ultrabay sda? It would seem to me that the first one, the one replacing the original harddisk, should be the main one and be called sda but clearly there is something I don't understand. In the BIOS the SSD replacing the harddisk has a higher boot order priority then the SSD replacing the DVD-drive. Suggestions? Thanks.

plug in USB device no longer noticed by system

Hi all! My C6 box seems to have developed this problem somewhere during recent weeks. not quite sure when, but I've noticed it several times lately. Whenever I plug in a USB device, be it a camera or a HD or a mouse, nothing happens. I mean nothing. /var/log/messages doesn't show any activity, lsusb does not show the new device. Back at the start of Feb I did move the raid1 pair of HDs to a new motherboard, so I suppose it could go back that far. I did try to make sure everything was working at that time, and I can't remember if I verified that USB autodiscovery was working. But it for sure isn't now. I use a USB keyboard and USB mouse, but they seem to be discovered at boot time and work fine thereafter. but adding any other devices after boot isn't working. Disappearing Network Manager config scripts

Is anyone frustrated by Network Manager? I wish CentOS just used the basic configuration files like the ones on BSD-style OSes. Those are so simple in comparison. Each time I reboot, it seems like the configuration file I create for Network Manager gets destroyed and replaced with a default file. Nothing in the default file would actually make sense on my network, so I'm not even really sure how this machine is still connected to the network after a reboot destroys my previous configuration. The only way I seem to be able to keep my proper DNS settings is through the GUI interface to Network Manager. I have to enter the configuration in each time I reboot. At the very least, I just want to stop Network Manager from wiping out my perfectly fine /etc/resolv.conf. There has to be a better way. -- - EJR

Guys, Im trying very hard to get a poc iscsi target/initiator working between 2 centos 6 machines. The targetcli seems buggy as hell - meaning it does not look updated for the current version of centos or other distributions output some output - notice the 2011 year and I dont have the iscsi directory. It seems commands can only be issued out of the corresponding directory... I want to disable suthentication ie /iscsi> set discovery_auth enable=0 Unknown configuration group: discovery_auth I dont have the ISCSI directory! OMG! apparently this is the install for targetcli... fcoe-target-utils.noarch fcoe-utils.i686 Is there any relatively direct documentation on how to set this up? I wasnt to use iscsi as a san replicator for oracle ASM and NOT use openfiler. Why are hplip and hpijs always so back dated?

My fully patched CentOS 6.5 system uses: hplip-common-3.12.4-4.el6_4.1.i686 hpijs-3.12.4-4.el6_4.1.i686 hplip-libs-3.12.4-4.el6_4.1.i686 My wife's printer becomes supported at 3.13.somethingOrOther and the current release is 3.14.something. Why are we so far behind? I realize that I can download the latest, uninstall the RPM versions and compile and build and install the source copy. If I was going to follow that route, I would prefer to build an rpm and install it normally. I have been looking on the Internet and not found anything to turn the release from HP into a binary RPM. (That does not mean it is not there.) I know it must be doable since there are rpm's in the repositories. My skill with RPM's is somewhat limited, but does anyone know of a set of instructions and a spec file that could be used to get started on this process? Thanks in Advance Bob, Phoenix, AZ,

I'd like to start from konsole a virt-viewer to vm1 on screen vga1 and another virt-viewer to vm2 on screen lvds1. Anyone knows if this is possible with KDE on a CentOS 6.5? Thanks Patrick

Need Python3 for C6

I need Python 3.4 (latest) on CentOS 6 for development purposes (teaching programming). Need advice for best method to do this. I am concerned about not breaking the internal plumbing of C6. I was thinking about installing it into /opt. I noticed http://puias.math.ias.edu/data/puias/computational has 3.3 but I need 3.4 (asyncio module). Wondering if anyone has tried python3 from puias repo ? Does it break anything? Also, found http://toomuchdata.com/2014/02/16/how-to-install-python-on-centos/ Any advice welcome.

Will Devtools-1.1 or later become part of SCL?

I've already installed devtools-1.1 from Tru Huynh. http://people.centos.org/tru/devtools-1.1/ Thank You Tru. gcc 4.7.2 is so much newer than stock 4.4.7. (much better C++11 support) Why is devtools-1.1 not officially part of CentOS SCL? easily mount .iso files on CentOS

Yes I know you can use the command line to mount an iso, but does anyone know of a tool like mounty for deb systems that you can use a menu to find the iso and and mount it? Windows 8 has right-click and mount, os x has had double-click to open for years. Why do we need to revert to the command line for something like this on linux? Thanks, -wes

Getting yum to install to python 2.7 dir

I am running CentOS 6.5, which has python 2.6. I need python 2.7 so I installed that and it works and is my default python. But yum does not work with that, so I changed the shebang line for yum to /usr/bin/python2.6 and then yum works again. But when I install a python package with yum it get installed to /usr/lib64/python2.6/site-packages/. How can I get yum to install to /usr/lib64/python2.7/site-packages? Thanks!

Ext4 mess .... and EXT4-fs error (device sdc): ext4_mb_generate_buddy

Hi, I'm faced with a very strange behaviour: Centos 6.5 server, Hardware ISCSI HBA from Emulex OneConnect, most recent drivers and firmware from emulex installed. Directly attached a 10G ISCSI Storage from QSan. Two Raid volumes, Raid 5, 8 Disks each at 2 TB so 14 TB each logic raid volume. Both volumes are logged in and usable as sdb and sdc to the server. Formatted with ext4 -m 0 -v /dev/sd... Now I copied about 600 GB from an old server to one of the new volumes. No problems at all. But moving other data from the old server to the second volume shows the error in the logs: EXT4-fs error (device sdc): ext4_mb_generate_buddy: EXT4-fs: group 2592: 0 blocks in bitmap, 24544 in gd group grows by 16. But the more strange thing I realised today is, that all the data on the first volume (on sdb) shows up on sdc as well + the new data too. Now I'm totally confused and currently there are no more messages in the system log. The files on sdc don't show up on sdb! If I do e.g. a md5sum on the files on both volumes they are the same as is the contents of e.g. some textfiles I checked. May be someone has an idea what might cause a) the error and b) why dose the data from sdb also shows up on sdc? b) also occurred also with the original redhat/centos driver for the ISCSI HBA. May be I have to use partitions and not the whole device or LVM, ... xfs? Other storages from Qsan dont show that problem and other storages with bigger filesystems or e.g. xfs are o.k. too. confused regards . Götz

[OT] how do I remove a battery

I've got an MSI K9N Platinum MS 7250 VER 1.1 motherboard with a dead battery. The battery mounts vertically: http://www.cs.ndsu.nodak.edu/~hennebry/computer/battery.png To me, the tab on the right would seem to need moving. It does not want to move. Some basic SELinux questions

At my place we don't use SELinux because we have a gazillion tonnes of legacy software that just are not compatible with the default policies. No one wants to go to the effort of working out everything that needs changing. We also use cfengine for central management. Which somestimes causes a problem when CFe modifies a file that I don't want modified on my machine. So I want to be able to track when specific files were changed. My obvious thought was "create an SELinux audit policy that can track file changes, raise a log message", and we can monitor the logs. At this point I'm at a loss. Let's say I want to know when /local/app/my_app/etc/myfile.conf has been modified; how would I do this? Any ideas? Failing that I guess I could use inotify, but I don't know how well this would scale to 100s of files. Thanks! -- rgds Stephen

Support for ECDSA in OpenSSL?

Does the version of OpenSSL on Centos 6.5 support ECDSA keypairs? How do I test if this works? (though I should probably ask this on the OpenSSL list) The reason I suspect a problem is that HIPL for Centos (http://infrahip.hiit.fi/) is not creating the ECDSA Host Identity, whereas my Fedora installation IS creating the ECDSA HI.

It seems when I hit a truly knotty issue you come through with the pointers to get me going in the right direction. This is not OpenSSH, but HIP for Linux. The HIPL binaries for Centos were compiled on a 6.5 system with all current updates. I did a lot of review of drafts for rfc6090 with Dr. McGrew; more on style than math ("David, I don't understand what you are trying to say here." ;) ). The supposed inside story is that NSA got really upset that their licensing of the patents was not getting them COTS products, as sales to DoD is a small portion for these vendors. So Kevin joined David as co-author. This is mission critical. We can live with RSA for the pilot, but MUST be on ECDSA for launch. Since my day job is a major RedHat customer, I can have someone from that side of the company do a bug submission against RH6 to get this addressed.

firefox problem with redirects on centos 5

I'm having a peculiar problem with Firefox only on my Centos 5 desktop. Every time I try a link from a search engine and even when I type in a location, I get a redirect error: "The page isn't redirecting properly. "Firefox has detected that the server is redirecting the request for this address in a way that will never complete." However, any link in my bookmarks works, as do a couple of remote IPs I have in /etc/hosts. (Does places.sqlite store IP numbers? ) All the machines use the router for DNS, and the router goes to OpenDNS. This problem *only* affects Firefox, and only on the one Centos 5 machine. I have Centos 6 machines, Macs and Androids on the LAN.. Firefox works fine everywhere else. On the Centos 5 box, Opera works fine. Any suggestions?

lock down gnome-screensaver

Hello All, I'm trying to set defaults for gnome-screensaver on some Centos6.5 laptops and lock it down with these commands: # gconftool-2 --direct --config-source xml:readwrite:/etc/gconf/gconf.xml.mandatory --type boolean --set /apps/gnome-screensaver/lock_enabled true # gconftool-2 --direct --config-source xml:readwrite:/etc/gconf/gconf.xml.mandatory --type boolean --set /apps/gnome-screensaver/idle_activation_enabled true # gconftool-2 --direct --config-source xml:readwrite:/etc/gconf/gconf.xml.mandatory --type int --set /apps/gnome-screensaver/idle_delay 20 The first two commands work, in the screensaver-preferences window, these settings get grayed-out. But the idle_delay 20 command does not work, users can still change the setting to let's say 1 minute. Does anybody know how to do this? Starting the gotour server on CentOS 6

Hey CentOS folks! I have an interesting issue with starting a server on a CentOS 6 KVM guest. The server (service) in particular is gotour, which is a web application created by Google and their Golang developers, intended to teach users the basics of using the Go programming langauge. When starting gotour, the program claims to be binding to port 12049, but the VM doesn't seem to be serving anything on that port. Upon checking the netstat output, I see a process bound to port 12049. It is definitley possible that the problem is with Go itself, but I'd like to rule out the possibility that something on an out-of-the-box CentOS 6 image might be preventing the server from working. Module building and signing

In order to get "Beats Audio" (2.1 channel sound) working on my HP k025dx laptop running CentOS 6.5, I need to re-assign some of the pins on the Intel HDA soundcard - model 92HD91BXX. This is trivial in newer distros for two reasons: 1. the 'hda-jack-retask' application compiles and runs on newer distros 2. the snd-hda-intel modules on newer distros are compiled with CONFIG_SND_HDA_RECONFIG=y Even if I could get 'hda-jack-retask' to compile, I'd still need the module built with CONFIG_SND_HDA_RECONFIG=y. So I followed the 2 wiki articles to install full kernel sources and I re-compiled the module. When loading the new module, I get the following error: FATAL: Error inserting snd_hda_intel (/lib/modules/2.6.32-431.11.2.el6.x86_64/extra/snd-hda-intel.ko): Invalid module format I run 'file' on the new and original modules and they seem identical: /lib/modules/2.6.32-431.11.2.el6.x86_64/extra/snd-hda-intel.ko: ELF 64-bit LSB relocatable, x86-64, version 1 (SYSV), not stripped /lib/modules/2.6.32-431.11.2.el6.x86_64/kernel/sound/pci/hda/snd-hda-intel.ko: ELF 64-bit LSB relocatable, x86-64, version 1 (SYSV), not stripped My next attempt was to compile an entire kernel, and then copy the new module over to the original kernel. Inserting the module give the following: Module signed with unknown public key ksign: module signed with unknown public key - signature keyid: 3000b37e8a34083d ver=4 I googled for a fix and tried two methods of removing the module signing (neither worked): objcopy -R .note.module_sig snd-hda-intel.ko objcopy -R .module_sig snd-hda-intel.ko (I did get finally get the audio pins re-mapped, but I had to resort to using my newly-compiled kernel as well). Does anyone use tcp wrappers (hosts.allow/hosts.deny) anymore? And, would you care strongly if it went away (or would you just migrate to something else)? I bring this up because we are discussing dropping it from Fedora. This would be far enough in the future that it wouldn't impact RHEL 7, and therefore won't affect anyone here for Quite Some Time*, but here in the new world order of CentOS, I thought it might be useful to check with some actual downstream users. What do you think? Do you rely on hosts.allow/hosts.deny a primary security mechanism? As defense-in-depth? Do you have policies which mandate it? Your feedback appreciated. Hello! We have central ldap for users, idmapd.conf configured on every machine and users' home folders on nfs, mounted by automount on several machines. CentOS 5.10: Upgrading from IUS's php52 to CentOS's php53 questions

I would like to update one of the websites on my server from Joomla 1.5 to Joomla 3.2, but it wants PHP 5.3. I am currently using IUS's php52 5.2.17, which is fine for the Joomla 1.5 and the various WordPress sites (up to 3.9) currently served on this server. I plan to test the update procedure on my home (test) system (a pretty much identically setup system) before possible breaking my public/production server, but wanted to get the 'wisdom' of the centos user-list: are there any gotchas I need to watch for. Normalizing WAV files

Hey all, I've been googling trying to find a tool that I can use to normalize a directory full of WAV files. I found a reference to normalize in the atrpms repo but it wants to clobber several of the base rpms. backuppc problem

I've installed backuppc from the EPEL repository. It does backups just fine, BUT, when the backups are done, the status on the web page says there are no backups for any of my systems I'm backing up. To be sure, they are taking up disk space, but it's just not reporting it correctly to the admin web interface. I'm thinking I'm missing some package I need, but am not sure exactly what. Any ideas? Kernel panic when booting into FIPS mode

Sorry if you see this twice, I may have goofed: Hey, So I was playing around with trying to get a CentOS 6.5 system FIPS-140 complaint. However, my system panics because it cannot find the hmac file associated with my kernel. It's basically as what is going on is described in this bug report: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=805538 The /sbin/fips.sh script in the initramfs there is a bit of code: if ! [ -e "/boot/.vmlinuz-${KERNEL}.hmac" ]; then warn "/boot/.vmlinuz-${KERNEL}.hmac does not exist" return 1 fi But that file does exist on the system. I guess the initramfs may not see the /boot directory on the system? Or is it trying to look for /boot inside the initramfs? If so that would explain my problem. I haven't verified any of this yet. CentOS 6 mount of ntfs formatted usb stick fails

I recently received an 8GB usb stick that fails to mount on my fully patched CentOS 6.5 desktop machine. The stick works just fine on a windoze 7 laptop (my daughter's) with no special drivers installed. fdisk -l /dev/sdf gives the following: Disk /dev/sdf: 8004 MB, 8004829184 bytes 102 heads, 38 sectors/track, 4033 cylinders Units = cylinders of 3876 * 512 = 1984512 bytes Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes Disk identifier: 0xc3072e18 Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System /dev/sdf1 3 4034 7813184 7 HPFS/NTFS mount -t ntfs /dev/sdf1 /mnt/usb gives: NTFS signature is missing. Failed to mount '/dev/sdf1': Invalid argument The device '/dev/sdf1' doesn't seem to have a valid NTFS. Maybe the wrong device is used? Or the whole disk instead of a partition (e.g. /dev/sda, not /dev/sda1)? Or the other way around? as does mount -t ntfs /dev/sdf /mnt/usb NTFS signature is missing. Problem with blades that wont kickstart

About 15% of my blades wont kickstart. I checked to see, and they all seem to be 100% compatible. I currently do not own/direct access the kickstart server, I will build one later. Is it possible they fat fingered the MAC address of the problem blades when they put them into the PXE server? As I can build them from a locally mounted virtual CD, but cannot build from PXE At first I was getting a grub error. When I installed a baseline Centos locally, and then pxe booted for the build. I got a cannot find C0T0 which indicates it cannot find the first drive (kickstart uses sda1), yet I look in the drac and I can see C0T0 drive as well as C0t1 drive (this is a raid 1 virtual drive no mirror) So here is my big question: can I put my primary drive in slot sda2 on the blade... then DD the drive from the working blade, change the MAC address in the network interface, change the hostname/IP address in /etc/sysconfig/network and /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/eth0 to build the drives? What are the risks? what are the gotcha's? what problems will I have DD ing a drive that is currently the boot drive? Any suggestions are welcome -- Dan Hyatt

cannot kickstart centos 6 on Dell Blade error cannot find c0t0

I have an intermittent problem with my Dell blades, out of 80 blades 69 of them kickstarted Centos 6 fine using PXE The other 11, I get a c0t0 not found error (indicating it is not finding the local disk on the blade). I can remote mount the iso image and do a basic install of centos on these blades, but when I go to do a pxe boot it gives me that error again. I have googled the issue and come up empty handed. Dell told us to install centos 6 minimal ISO then pxe install the server. This has been unsuccessful. I get the local ISO to install but the pxe fails again. Since the kickstart file defines the disk as sda1 I am supposing that it is really a hardware problem. But I am told by coworkers who handed it off to me that it is a known issue with centos and Dell blades. These are two internal disks on the blade. Any suggestions? -- Dan

The latest version of rkhunter is complaining about "suspicious file types" in /dev/shm. Thing is, they're being created on the fly by R, and then seem to be a random name (5d1f...), and I have zero expectation that R will only create shm files beginning with those characters. For those running rkhunter, if you've run into something like this, how have you handled it - told rkhunter to ignore /dev/shm, or lived with the regular complaints in the logs, or...? I note that of the three files created by R, one ends in _counter, and another starts with sem.(same long random name as the other files)_counter_mutex. The third has neither prefix nor postfix. mark "and googling on rkhunter "R language" keeps getting me repos, since both R and rkhunter are under the letter r.... mark "brought to you by Arrrghh...."

A naive question respecting x.509 logins

I have been looking at replacing our current login systems with a single login solution. In the process I managed to get sidetracked into investigating pam_pkcs11. My question, which no doubt reveals the depth of my ignorance, is: Can a simple USB flash memory stick be configured to work with this or some similar module of which I as yet know nothing? Everything I have managed to find about this method of loging on to CentOS implies that either a special smart-card and dedicated reader or a purpose-built usb smart-token is required. TRD like tool for linux?

so I found that one of my VM hosts seems to have been compromised in some way; I've shut it down, isolated it, found a few odd things like gibberish comments and odd hostnames that I don't recognise pointed back to 127.0.0.1 in /etc/hosts. I tried TRD and it seems mildly useful, but has more of a windowsy feel for what it wants to be able to fix. does anyone know of something with more linux rootkit detection as a focus? I could just rebuild this machine, but I'd like to know for sure what all/how bad this was broken so I can avoid it for next time. thanks.

CentOS 5/6 random system freezes

I am working on high load daemon development, which listens on UDP and processes packets. Last few months I noticed some strange issue when it takes 500-700 ms to answer packet, while usually it takes 20 ms. I've run strace on all daemon processes and found this thing: 13:35:36.979887 stat("/etc/localtime", {st_mode=S_IFREG|0644, st_size=2309, ...}) = 0 13:35:36.979944 write(3, "[2014-04-15 13:35:36,979] WARNING WORKER 26 - [pkt#105132/AUTH] loadPresets - memory used: 0 kb\n", 99) = 99 13:35:37.599793 sendto(10, "Q\0\0\0\rSELECT 1\0", 14, MSG_NOSIGNAL, NULL, 0) = 14 13:35:37.599865 poll([{fd=10, events=POLLIN|POLLERR}], 1, -1) = 1 ([{fd=10, revents=POLLIN}]) You can see that between write and sendto passed around 600 ms. At this time server was not overloaded (LA = 0.4, 16 cores). There were free memory. There were no load on disks. So I took straces of other daemon processes plus database processes. And then did: grep '13:35:37.4' * grep '13:35:37.3' * grep '13:35:37.2' * None of commans show any lines. So I guess the system was just doing nothing during this 600 ms. so, supposedly mailman 2.1.16+ has a feature that allows you to configure mailman lists so yahoo won't have a hissy with their new implementation of DMARC. http://www.spamresource.com/2014/04/up-in-arms-about-yahoos-dmarc-policy.ht… has anyone packaged this as an RPM for CentOS 5 ? mbox files - can they be "compacted"?

Hi All ;) Is there an option to compact large mbox files from the shell? I did not find anything in google, I have some very large constantly updated mbox files and would like to know if they can be made smaller with any tool. AFAIK mutt does such operation when for example an email is deleted but I am curious if there are other options. BR, Rafal.

Hi there. I got myself a pair of old Intel Xeon blades, which I plan to repurpose with CentOS. The model is : HP bl20p-g3 server blade Manual http://h18004.www1.hp.com/products/quickspecs/12322_ca/12322_ca.pdf Now, the main problem with this hardware is that LVD UW SCSI HDDs are hard to find and hella expensive if you find em (and of reduced capacity). Any of you know: 1. If there's any third party maker of any daughtercard offering SATA ports? The main board of the system has daughtercard sockets allowing for instance SFP ports http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Small_form-factor_pluggable_transceiver Seems to me that there'd be a small but interesting niche for this kind of adapter. 2. If it's possible to use BootP for booting off a network drive? I know there are some UWSCSI to SATA adapter daughtercards but those sell for $250 which is way over my budget. So, if you had one of these blades but not any UWSCSI HDDs what would you do? Thanks in advance for any pointer. This hardware is too good to back to the dumpster where I got mines from... Botched kernel update

I have a 6.5 box that failed to boot after a kernel update. This machine doesn't have tboot installed. I removed the kernel and reinstalled it, yet the grub entry was recreated as above. Digging deeper, I found this in /etc/sysconfig/kernel: # HYPERVISOR specifies the default multiboot kernel HYPERVISOR=/boot/tboot.gz HYPERVISOR_ARGS=logging=vga,serial,memory Removing these lines results in a working grub.conf when the kernel is reinstalled. The question is now: what placed these entries there? It's not tboot, I checked the srpm.

I know I'm slightly OT here, asking about RHEL, but since Centos is now a part of RH, I'm hoping I won't be summarily ejected. I've seen several articles that listed Centos 6.x as vulnerable, but DID NOT LIST RHEL 6. I'd think that if Centos 6.x is vulnerable, then so would RHEL 6.x, since Centos is made from RHEL sources. btrfs in centos 6

I played with btrfs in centos 6.3 and it seemed to mostly work. Now I'm building some new systems with 6.5, where I'd like to have some data disks using btrfs - not the system disk. I can create and fiddle with btrfs filesystems just fine, but attempting to mount them produces an oops. Surfing the Internets has not enlightened me. I installed btrfs-progs, and can modprobe btrfs, no problem. This warning appears: [root@h-248-254 ~]# btrfsck /dev/sdb failed to open /dev/btrfs-control skipping device registration Which I see I can fix with [root@h-248-254 ~]# mknod /dev/btrfs-control c 10 234 [root@h-248-254 ~]# btrfsck /dev/sdb checking extents ... which makes me think that I'm missing some udev rules? And then for the mount oops I only have a photo, but the call chain is ... bad_area __do_page_fault call_rcu_sched call_rcu do_page_fault page_fault selinux_set_mnt_opts superblock_doinit deactiviate_locked_super selinux_sb_kern_mount security_sb_kern_mount vfs_kern_mount do_kern_mount I'm not 100% sure this hardware is OK ... but I can do lots of stuff with the btrfs progs and never see any problems. Can anyone who has this working give me a clue? Thanks. -- greg
