Every so often, one of our servers will go into what I can only describe as an undefined state: it pings, but there's zero access - you can't ssh in, and if I go plug a keyboard and monitor into the server itself, you can see the monitor's live, it's not the "monitor turned off" color, but there is zero response to the keyboard. The upshot is that I wind up having to power cycle it. Well, it just happened again on one of our servers Friday evening, as I found this morning. Looking at the logs this morning, I see that sar last shows 10:20:01 PM all 34.38 0.00 8.29 0.00 0.00 57.33 On of my users dropped me an email at 22:45 that it was "off", and the last things I see in /var/log/messages are one of those annoying Feb 21 22:26:23 <server> kernel: INFO: task perl:20596 blocked for more than 120 seconds. Feb 21 22:26:23 <server> kernel: "echo 0 > /proc/sys/kernel/hung_task_timeout_secs" disables this message. I also see Feb 21 22:26:23 <server> kernel: perl D ffffffff80158250 0 20596 20557 which, as I just found by googling perl NOTLD, means that this is in a kernel uninterruptable state In addition, in the stack trace, some nfs messages Feb 21 22:26:23 <server> kernel: [<ffffffff886b58d1>] :nfs:nfs_wait_bit_uninterruptible+0x0/0xd So, it *appears* to be either an NFS issue, or a NIC issue. The user's home directory server is CentOS running 6.5, and the server that hung is 5.10. Mount on the formerly hung server, su-d to his account shows merely nfs, so I'm guessing it's NFS3. Looking at lsmod and /var/log/dmesg, I see it's running the tg3 NIC driver. Anyone else seeing this, and if so, any thoughts on the matter? Note that I've had this on Penguins, which are all Supermicro, and they're using the igb NIC driver, but the one this past weekend is a Dell, so it's not just one system. mark

Migration from 32 to 64 bits

Hello to all, currently I have CentOS 6.4 32 bit, very simple setup on my notebook, I want to migrate it from 32 to 64 bits cause I want to play with some VMs etc etc. Do you have some suggestions on how to do backup of folders (mainly I have 1 user) or just copy the user folder and stop? Need help resolving yum update issues on mixed architecture system

I have been using 32-bit CentOS since the 4.X days without a real need for 64-bit, but in preparation for CentOS 7, I have installed 64-bit CentOS 6 on a test system to qualify all our builds. However, in order to build some of our current 32-bit applications, I had to install some i686 packages, including glib. Now when I try to do a "yum update" on this test system, I get the dreaded "Error: Multilib version problems found." issue. I have tried following the instructions from yum (--exclude=glib.i686, yum check, etc.) to resolve this to no avail. What is the best way to proceed with the "yum update" so that all (64-bit and 32-bit) packages are updated? Thanks, Alfred

Multicast packages dropped

Hi, I have recently updated one of my systems from CentOs 6.4 to CentOS 6.5. This systems is used as a RIPv2 routing server with quagga which is the termination point of some GRE tunnels. While running CentOS 6.4 I see the multicast packages arriving at the eth0 and the GRE tunnel interface. While running under CentOs 6.5 I can see the multicast packages arriving at the eth0 but not on the GRE tunnel interface. I am receiving and sending routes at the eth0 interface, but I am only able to send updates through the GRE tunnel not receive them. Problem with cron

I have a root cron job that powers down my server every day at 1am and 6pm. The output of '# crontab -l' is shown below. * 1,18 * * * poweroff Last night, after the server powered down at 6pm, I decided I wanted to use the server so I started it with the power button. The server, after a minute or so, powered itself down. This behaviour happened repeatedly until I waited past 7pm. Then the server did not poweroff. Apparently a cron job that executed correctly at 6pm was executing minutes past 6pm when the server was restarted. This is totally unexpected behavior. Here is the output of the cron log file. KVM and Win7-64 Sound

Dear Gurus I have been unable to make sound (and microphone) work in Windows 7 (64-bit) as a VM with KVM. Google searches reveal this to be a common problem, with various solutions recommended, primarily Ubuntu oriented, none of which have worked for me. So I wonder if anyone has a working Windows sound condition with: Centos 6.5 with KVM, all on a 64-bit Intel platform. Sound works on the host machine, verified when I switch into GUI mode and run a sound-producing program Sound does not work in the Windows 7 (64-bit) PRO installation as a Virtual Machine, and I have tried specifying the emulated hardware as AC97, and ICH6. Any working examples? David

Growing HW RAID arrays, Online

We add disks to an LSI raid array periodically to increase the amount of available space for business needs. It is understood that this process starts with metal, and has many layers that must each adjust to make use of the additional space. Each of these layers also says that it can do that 'online' without interruption or rebooting. But making it happen is not that easy. When the HW raid controller's grow completes, we echo 1 to /sys/bus/scsi/devices/#:#:#:#/rescan and the kernel notices and updates the size of the block device. (sdc in this case) sdc1 is the only partition on the device, and should consume the entire device. sdc1 is a PV in a VG that holds production data and must not become unavailable at any time. After growing sdc as mentioned earlier, parted notices that the end-of-drive partition table is missing, fixes it, and grows its disk size to match the new size of sdc. It all makes sense up to this point. but what happens next is what I need some advice on. How do we grow sdc1, online? parted says it doesn't support 'resize' on the filesystem (LVM PV). The usual answer to parted's lack of support for filesystems, and insistence to only resize partitions when it can stick its nose in the filesystem and do that too is: parted sdc rm 1, parted mkpart primary 0% 100% (thus making a new partition "Around" the old one) That should work, but I can't get the kernel to 'notice' that sdc1 is now larger. hdparm -z barfs up an error that sdc is in use. I know that rebooting likely will fix it. But we cannot reboot. We also cannot keep making more partitions every time we add a disk. So that's not a solution either. We need to GROW the gpt partitions online, or use another partitioning type that supports >6TB I've googled it for hours and found no good solutions. This same situation would affect VMs with virtual disks that grow over time to satisfy business needs, as well as servers mounting iSCSI/FC storage that grows over time. How would you grow this online? Going without partitions at all and putting the pv directly on sdc is no good either. So we need partitions, and msdos tables don't support >2TB and the only other in practical use that I know of is gpt, and thse aparently can't expand online! transparent_huge_pages problem (again?)

Hi, I've experiencing problems with 6.5 guests on a 6.4 host when running hadoop with transparen_huge_pages enabled. As soon as I disable that feature everything returns to normal. I'm posting here because this issue cam up in the past: http://bugs.centos.org/view.php?id=5716 That bug was closed with "resolved in EL6.4" but now it seems to have returned. Apparently there exists an old bug (presumably resolved) upstream here: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=805593 Since I don't have access to it I'm not sure what the current state is. What are my options here? Should I reopen the CentOS bug above or should I file a new one upstream? Regards, Dennis

Dear Linux Gurus I'm having problems with KVM and networking. My guest cannot use NAT through the host's connection. This is what I've done: I installed a new version of Centos 6.5 on the hardware. Starting with a Net-Install, I selected the Virtual Hosting, and later added "Desktop". I ran "yum update" with some reboots until nothing needed updating. The host networking is IPV4 only, using DHCP. (A different box on my home network provides DHCP and is a gateway to the internet. I have a reservation in that DHCP so that the host always gets a known IP address) Using a Gnome desktop, as a non-root user, I installed Windows 7 Pro from an image of an ISO I had copied onto the host. In the "Networking" configuration, I chose "DEFAULT". The documentation of KVM seems to imply that it should give me a NAT'ted interface to my host's connection (I wasn't worried about performance at this point). When the installation was complete, Windows tries to configure the network. Running the Windows command line "IPCONFIG" program, the Windows guest program does get an IP address from the host (192.168.122.xxx), but the guest cannot communicate to the outside world. Hi List, Strange problem. I am running off of CentOS x86_64 6.4 usb key that is sdb I have ssd disk that has a centos image on it. I have mounted the partitions /dev/sda3 as /mnt/sysimage and /dev/sda1 as /mnt/sysimage/boot I am trying to chroot to /mnt/sysimage dir but get the following error. eclipse now crashing on CentOS 5.10

Got a user screaming... his 5.10 workstation, first time since the upgrade java-openjdk 1.7.0.51-2.4.4.2 Anyone else seeing that? I logged onto his machine, and I don't use eclipse, at all, so there shouldn't be a lot of crap in my .eclipse, and it shows the splash window, then tells me it's crashed in another pop-up, and it's gone. Best way to virtualize Windows XP on Centos

I may have a need to run some version of Windows (XP?) on my desktop. As this will likely be a short-term thing, and since I have never used Windows, I would like to do this in the most painless way possible. A method that requires me to make the least changes to my Centos computer would be nice, since I'll probably want to back it out again later. I have never used any of the current virtualization technologies, so it's all new to me. My objective is to have Window run in a window on my desktop. I don't want to dual-boot my computer. I was looking at virtualbox. Is this the best approach? I get the impression that there are special kernel modules that are required for virtualbox, but if I install dkms then that will be automatically handled for me whenever there is a kernel upgrade. Install dkms, install the virtualbox repo, install virtualbox rpms, set up image, done. Is that all there is to it? Would something other than virtualbox be better? The hpacucli works... but what isn't clear to me, even with googling, is whether I have to do something from the utility, or whether I can just pull the failed drive out of the hot-swap bay and put another in. I *do* see that I have to re-enable the drive, or rescan it, but right now, I'm concerned about just pulling the dead one out. mark

Problem with wireless router

Hello, I am using wireless N on a DLink-655 wireless router. It is the "A" hardware version with the latest firmware. I am using a channel that no one in my vicinity is using, according to iwlist. I checked the Statistics from the router web interface and they are shown below for a period of less than an hour. It looks like the errors are excessive, especially the "RX Packets Dropped" Is this par for the course and TCP takes care of it or am I having hardware problems with my router? bridge network question

I have centos 64 6.5 I installed bridge-utils I installed tunctl I added BRIDGE=br0 to ifcfg-eth0 I created ifcfg-br0 with correct settings I did service network restart and I get an error about br0 not present. When I plug in the second network (USB to ethernet) It detects as eth1 What do I need to change to get this to work. Thanks, jerry

Hello. I apology in advance if I am not reporting things correctly, but my knowledge about these things is very limited. I have five Transtec computers, approximately born in July 2005; they have an intel 82845G video card. The last 'yum update' was on January 30, 2014. I did not reboot the machines at that time. I cannot be sure about the date of the 'yum update' preceding that one, but I think is was on September 7, 2013. Last Friday (February 14, 2014), 4 of those 5 computers stopped working properly after some action on them. The problem is: black screen with only the arrow of the mouse (mouse is working correctly :-). Apart from that, the computers are OK: one can use Ctrl-Alt-F1, etc. For sure, one of the action which led to the problem was a reboot. I cannot be 100% sure about the action, which was simply a change of screen: the machine was OK; then I changed the screen; it did not work any more; then I rebooted. But my experience is that, sometimes, even under normal condition, it does not work right away, or perhaps not at all, after changing the screen. The 5th computer, on which nothing has been done, is still working just fine. NB: for sure, there has been at least one reboot on at least one of the 5 machines between September (or whatever date at which the previous 'yum update' has been performed) and January, and the problem did not show up. For what it's worth, the following 2 packages are installed: xorg-x11-drv-intel-devel-2.21.12-2.el6.i686 xorg-x11-drv-intel-2.21.12-2.el6.i686 Also, here is the output of 'lspci | grep 82845': 00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corporation 82845G/GL[Brookdale-G]/GE/PE DRAM Controller/Host-Hub Interface (rev 01) 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82845G/GL[Brookdale-G]/GE Chipset Integrated Graphics Device (rev 01) Based on the data, my best guess is that the problem I have is due to some recent change in the centos packages. Perhaps it was supposed to be so? (I.e., no longer supporting old hardware?). If so, at any rate, I'll be grateful if someone can suggest a workaround, or perhaps a hint towards that goal. Dug myself into a hole

I just build a CentOS 6 machine to replace my old machine which broke to where I could not fix it. In attempting to get the applications running which had worked on the old machine, I did updates from several repos such as rpmforge, atrpms, livna, epel, etc. Some of the attempts ended going down blind alleys. Now I have a mix of rpm's from various sites that I do not need, but they are listed as dependencies of other rpm's. The rpmforge rpm's are marked with "rf". Is there a process to check which of these rpm's are also in the base libraries and force them back in? I really do not want to go back to square 1 and reload the system from scratch. Bob S

I've got a user that wants Japanese language support in firefox... our *stock* CentOS firefox, 24.3. I've yum installed i18, and i10, and no joy. Looked at firefox addons, and there's one, 27.0. Won't install, "not compatible". Neither is either 24.0, or 25.0. Anyone have a link to a compatible version? mark

Hi All, Following the latest security updates from Oracle, the version of OpenJDK package is currently listed as: java-1.7.0-openjdk-1.7.0.51-2.4.4.1.el6_5.x86_64.rpm The Redhat security advisory lists these packages: https://rhn.redhat.com/errata/RHSA-2014-0026.html but it makes no reference to the build number, which it turns out is important. The build on the package in centos 6.5 is currently listed as b02: [........]$ java -version java version "1.7.0_51" OpenJDK Runtime Environment (rhel-2.4.4.1.el6_5-x86_64 u51-b02) OpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM (build 24.45-b08, mixed mode) However changes were being made in at least b10: https://bugs.openjdk.java.net/browse/JDK-8028111 I guess this raises three questions: 1. How is the build of the JDK selected for a security update in RHEL/CentOS? 2. Could the b number be made more clear in the release information given its importance? 3. Backing up Xen vm's

Dear All, because the organization I work for has to enter the 21 century eventually, and encouraged by the the excellent wiki's available, I'm giving Xen a try. I' ve tested setting it all up but I have this question concerning making backups. i' ve noticed that virsh snaphot-create does not work, and googling this, I can find many posts describing making backups with rbackup, lvm , dd, .... The thing is there is not always a date with these posts and articles, so before I dig into this: Is this still the way this is done, or is there now a more straightforward way to backup ( Xen ) vm's? new Centos 6.5 32 bit yum issue

When I fire up the virtualbox VM Centos starts as I would expect, but when I try to use yum list updates (or any of several other yum command I've tried) I get a repo error - " Loaded plugins: fastestmirror Loading mirror speeds from cached hostfile Could not retrieve mirrorlist http://mirrorlist.centos.org/?release=6&arch=i386&repo=os error was 14: PYCURL ERROR 6 - "Couldn't resolve host 'mirrorlist.centos.org'" Error: Cannot find a valid baseurl for repo: base I looked in the repo.d and the base CentOS-Base.repo suggests that if the mirrorlist= does not work I should try the commented out baseurl= instead. [OT] Video card radiator

I recently obtained a desktop computer with an nVidia video card: from lspci: 02:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation G84 [GeForce 8600 GT] (rev a1 I had to open the case to connect the DVD drive and saw what appears to be a fallen radiator: http://www.cs.ndsu.nodak.edu/~hennebry/computer/amd64-1.jpg http://www.cs.ndsu.nodak.edu/~hennebry/computer/amd64-2.jpg That nothing is shorted out appears to be a matter of luck. Strange Samba Issue

Ok so I built the microserver as a centos box and now I have a strange one I built a Centos 6.5 box with a 3.6 raid ext4 data drive on it, shared with samba. Now when I browse these folders on the console I can see the files. when I sftp on the command line from another box I can see these files. But when I browse via samba or using a gui sftp client quite a lot of these files are missing... Any ideas?

deleting FakeRaid -> what happens to the partitions/data

Hi A server has FakeRAID installed, I want to remove it to make it mdadm driven .... If I delete the FakeRAID including - disabling it in the BIOS - removing the dmraid driver from initrd - deleting all meta data from partitions - deleting all dmraid packages is the data still available on the drives, i.e. the partitions, filesystem and files are still ok? I know that FakeRAID controller is not a real hardware controller and the driver (thus CPU doing the work) makes it look like one drive ... So if you create a partition it would be a standard (and same) partition on each of the drive connected to a FakeRAID? Memory Not Recognized

Hello All, I noticed that my CentOS 6.5 system reports that I only have about 10.9 GiB of RAM when I actually have 16384M. I have already tried adding mem=xxM to the end of the kernel line in grub.conf. The result is the same. Any suggestions? Joe

Mirroring Disk (Apologies for the new thread I deleted the original)

Answers to questions... It really depends on your use case. I'm looking to be able to pull out old dead drive, and replace it with new (almost up to date) drive and reboot. The USB disk is a 1TB disk in a case. > Been considering dump and restoring to the usb disk periodically? or > maybe something using LVM or maybe creating and breaking a RAID 1 > array? Constantly making and breaking a RAID1 with a USB drive is probably not helpful. It's just more wear and tear on the OS drive, because it has to be constantly read in order to mirror the target drive, and your USB drive is probably not what you want to boot off of if your system drive fails. You'd be much better off with a permanent RAID1, but if you can't do that then at least make a RAID1 to a USB enclosure which contains the same size and interface drive as your current system disk. This way if it fails you can swap in the backup drive and not have to boot from a USB drive. Yeah I thought that would be the case, as I said above I'd like to be able to boot from the USB enclosure but the plan is to replace the failed internal with the disk from the USB enclosure. Would LVM be any help or is it just a complication? I defiantly leaning to the nightly dump/restore into a similarly formatted disk.

Hi, I recently installed some fresh CentOS 6.5 machines and it took only about 20 minutes until the file system (ext4) was broken. And with "broken" I mean, that the system wasn't able to find vital system libraries any more! I were able to reproduce it on highly different systems: - A fresh installed CentOS 6.5 64 Bit on a virtual machine (KVM) - A system which I installed some weeks ago (also a KVM machine) and did a "yum update" which upgraded to kernel 2.6.32-431.5.1.el6. - A fresh installed CentOS 6.5 64 Bit on native hardware on a RAID 5 assembled with mdadm - A CentOS 6.4 system installed some months ago on native hardware with mdadm RAID 5 The last system wasn't able to boot after the upgrade and crashed with several kernel panics which I can show as a screenshot if there's any interest - but the display resolution was quite low so there are not many helpful information :-( Actually, I assume that there's anything broken with the new kernel or at least the kernel module for ext4 file system. You can reproduce it by just doing a "yum update" and rebooting the system. If it comes up, reboot it again and manually do an offline filesystem check - or just do some writing activities on the disks. Is it just me? I don't use any 3rd party repositorys and it blows my mind that no one else seems to notice...! Greetings from Wuppertal, Germany Max

CentOS members, This is another CentOS, Emacs upgrade question: Since upgrading from CentOS 5.10 and Emacs 21.4.1 to CentOS 6.5 and Emacs 23.1.1 I am trying to get a spell checker working in emacs. Previously I used aspell and everything "just worked". Now I gather that hunspell is the norm but after installing it, when I try it it "just doesn't work". Emacs, Gnus, HTML emails and nbsp's...

Is there an emacs guru amongst the CentOS bretheren who can help me with the following: Since upgrading from CentOS 5.10, Emacs 21.4.1 and Gnus v5.9.0 to CentOS 6.5, Emacs 23.1.1 and Gnus v5.13 HTML emails are now being renderd in a pretty reasonable way (thanks!), *but* non-breaking-spaces (nbsp's - UTF8 0xC2, 0xA0) and a few other "unusual" characters are always displayed (both in my graphical display and in terminals and PuTTY sessions) as octal bytes (e.g. \302\240) instead of being renderd as glyphs. Why? Is it to do with the locale? That says: $ locale LANG=en_US.utf8 LC_CTYPE="en_US.utf8" LC_NUMERIC="en_US.utf8" LC_TIME="en_US.utf8" LC_COLLATE="en_US.utf8" LC_MONETARY="en_US.utf8" LC_MESSAGES="en_US.utf8" LC_PAPER=en_GB.UTF_8 LC_NAME="en_US.utf8" LC_ADDRESS="en_US.utf8" LC_TELEPHONE="en_US.utf8" LC_MEASUREMENT="en_US.utf8" LC_IDENTIFICATION="en_US.utf8" LC_ALL= Something in Gnus. RSync Problem

I use an external USB drive and rsync to back up everything in /home. The USB drive has an entry in fstab and I mount it with "# mount /mnt" The rsync command I use is: rsync -av --delete --include='.thunderbird' --include='.filezilla' --include='.putty' \ --exclude='.*' --exclude='Desktop' --exclude='VirtualBox*' /home/* /mnt/home/ After I deleted one of the users on my system, including their home directory, I ran the rsync command. I found that the deleted user's home directory wasn't deleted from /mnt/home. I thought that the --delete option deleted everything on the destination that was not on the source. Please help. Mirroring disk.

OK all my HP Microserver is purring away nicely now, as usual I looking for the rainy day. Although my data is on a RAID 5 array my OS is on a single disk. Any suggestions as to the best way to have a copy of my OS on an attached USB Drive? Been considering dump and restoring to the usb disk periodically? or maybe something using LVM or maybe creating and breaking a RAID 1 array? Just not sure of the best plan at the mo. Any tips?

Further to my very recent concerns that <ol type="a"> gives digits. type="a" was "depreciated" in HTML 4.1. "depreciated" means to me to be of a lesser value or to be prepared it may be abandoned. It does not, in my version of English English, mean removed from the HTML specification. Therefore it should function 'normally' in modern browsers like FF. HTML 5 has officially resurrected it. I now discover that <ol style="list-style-type:lower-alpha;"> also produces digits. Where should a BUG report be filled ? With Centos, the provider of Firefox ESR 24.3.0, or its parent Red Hat ? MySQL Can't create file '/tmp/#sql2e0_98_0.frm' (errno: 9) problem

Hi. I have a strange problem. I installed cacti, and set it up. When I click on the Plugins Management, I noticed Error "FATAL: Database or Table does not exist" Further testing revealed that at the moment MySQL can not create temporary files in /tmp. It is same for ANY database! SELinux is disabled. I logged to mysql as root and error is same. Command used is: CREATE TEMPORARY TABLE IF NOT EXISTS plugin_temp_table LIKE bak_menu; Error is: ERROR 1004 (HY000): Can't create file '/tmp/#sql21f8_f3_0.frm' (errno: 9) What could be the problem, any idea how to proceed? OpenDJ - and Centos Auth

All, I have a working OpenDJ with SSL enabled and have also added users to it.... Now, I am unable to authenticate my linux box to OpenDJ LDAP server, either from login prompt or ssh... I understand sssd is the latest program which does this configuration and I have that configured... though there is lot of howtos which google get, still there is clear documentation that I can find to perform the auth.. Firefox used to render <ol type="a"> <li>.................</li> as a. ............... Now it does not. The HTML 4.1 spec at http://www.w3.org/TR/html401/struct/lists.html#type-values says use CSS instead. These <ol type="a"> <ol type="A"> <ol type="i"> used to work in the Centos 5 supplied Firefox. Now OL produce digits instead. http://www.w3schools.com/tags/att_ol_type.asp states "Differences Between HTML 4.01 and HTML5 The type attribute of the <ol> element is no longer deprecated in HTML5." If something is "deprecated" it is supposed to work until it is withdrawn or cancelled. Is Firefox's inability to render <ol type="a"> a bug or a very annoying irritation especially as I have hundreds of hand-coded pages using it ? :-( -- Paul. England, EU. The latest version seems to have a bug. One of my users went to look at a paper in Phy Rev E, and the firefox pdf view looked fine... but what printed had garbage for scales on the graphs. Then I had him use the firefox print preview... and it was garbage. Looked at it on my system, ditto, and firefox was updated yesterday on all our systems. Save as (why isn't there an "open"?) a .pdf, pull it up in acroread, and print, and everything's fine. mark

Perl516 SCL modules

Hi, I'm trying to build several SCL perl516 modules for using assp spamfilter. Some modules have dependencies which spend a lot of errors or can not be build on a x86_64 system. perl-Email-Valid-0.184 for example needs Win32::IPHelper and Win32::TieRegistry. If I build this rpm for standard perl510, the Win32 modules are not required. Why are theses dependencies only for perl516? Can I exclude the Win32 modules without getting problems? Where to get Sernet-Samba4 questions answered?

Not wanting to build Samba4 myself I spent some time searching for rpm packages suitable for use on our CentOS-6.5 hosts. I discovered http://enterprisesamba.com/ which provides rpms (sernet-samba-4.1.4-7) for CentOS-6. However, I cannot find an online support community for this package and requests for help made to the samba.org list have met with absolute silence. Since my requests had to do with uncaught exceptions with stack traces and PANICs in samba-tools I can only infer from the silence that that list does not handle support enquires from anyone that does not build their own Samba4 from source. I have been to sernet.de which builds the rpms and the site is in German, a language I have not used in over twenty years and which I never read very well. It refers to EnterpriseSamba.com but that site in turn provides no reference to an online support community of users. So, I need help and I need some guidance as to where to go get it. password problems new centos 6.4 install and sl63 install.

greetings, a previous install and updated centos 6.4 from dvd 1 x86_64 got trashed. not sure of cause. no big deal. install practice never hurts. :-) now, installation is: CentOS-6.4-x86_64-bin-DVD1.iso installed as; CentOS (2.6.32-358.el6.x86_64) - root (hd1,2) SL-63-i386-2012-08-24-LiveCD.iso installed and updated as; Scientific Linux (2.6.32-431.1.2.el6.i686) - root (hd1,5) /dev/sdb5 /home after initial install of c6.4, second install phase went well. rebooted and checked boot up 3 times, all with successful logins. needed some kde configuration information from sl63, rebooted, selected sl63, boot ok. when tried to login to kde, user 'geo' password refused and user 'root' password refused. booted sl-62-i386 install dvd in rescue mode; chroot /mnt/sysimage passwd root passwd geo exit exit reboot login to sl63 as 'geo' and 'root' ok. ran email, ran some web work. rebooted to centos, 'geo' and 'root' passwords refused, tried twice, booted centos dvd-1 in rescue mode, made same entries as with sl62. rebooted to c64, login to c64 as 'geo' and 'root' ok. rebooted to sl62, tried to login as 'geo' and 'root', nfw, refused. it is now a continuous cycle of repeating of above. any and all help, ideas, suggestions, will be greatly appreciated. tia. -- peace out. in a world with out fences, who needs gates. tc.hago. g .

off NM problem [low priority]

On Centos 6.5, I use NM to bring up the VPN to my office, and to disconnect from it. every now and then I screw up and disconnect the LAN itself instead of the VPN. once I do that, even after reconnecting to the LAN I'm hosed. /etc/resolv.conf hasn't been put back to the non-VPN version, so I manually fix that. but even then I can't get any name resolution. I'm sure that rebooting IS NOT the right answer, but it's the only one I've come up with that solves the problem. OpenVPN problem

I'm having problems communicating with a remote server, with openvpn. I can link with ssh ok, but the link stalls when viewing any but the smallest texts. I tried reducing the tun0 MTU, though only from 1500 to 1400, but this seemed to have no effect. Before trying a larger reduction, I'd like to clarify two points. Firstly, is it necessary to re-boot the remote machine for the change in MTU to come into effect? Or is it sufficient to re-start the openvpn service? (I'm reluctant to re-boot the remote machine unless it is essential.) Secondly, must the MTU be changed at both ends? odd mcelogd problem

CentOS 6.4, 2.6.32-358.11.1.el6.x86_64 (And no, I can't just upgrade - the users have to be sure that the computational results will be correct....) It's throwing ECC errors. Trying to start mcelogd, first it said nothing. Restart told me "Please load edac_mce_amd module." I did a modprobe edac_mce_amd, and lsmod tells me it's in. But now service mcelogd restart Stopping mcelog Starting mcelog daemon [FAILED] AMD Processor family 16: Please load edac_mce_amd module. [FAILED] And in messages, mcelog: CPU is unsupported#012: Success "Success"? Anyone have any ideas what I'm missing; why I've loaded what it says it needs, and it still thinks it needs it? mark

Centos-compatible motherboards

Hi all! I'm toying with the idea of spending some Christmas money on a new MB and CPU to upgrade my desktop. Although I've always been partial to AMD chips, I'm tempted this time to find something Intel-ish, I5, quad core, or so. In looking at mommyboards at New Egg and Amazon, I find so many I am unable to make reasonable determinations regarding suitability, so am hoping some of you who have new(ish) intel-compatible boards could offer some hints. Also, I'd like to keep the cost of MB, CPU and RAM to no more (or little more) than $300-350. (seeing as how apparently mid-range I5 chips cost over 200 each, that may be a vain hope.) I expect that the newest ones may work with something bleeding edge like Fedora (et al), but I like centos for my desktop since it doesn't have the ridiculous churn rate of the more aggressive distros. I can't bring myself to relish the thought of rebuilding my main desktop twice a year (or even once a year). So, any suggestions will be greatly appreciated! A puzzle with grub-install

I ran into a problem when using grub-install experimentally in what is obviously a foolish way, since I was unable to boot the machine afterwards. I got round the problem, as I shall explain, but I'm still interested to know why the problem arose. Having added a second hard disk to my CentOS-6.5 server, as an experiment I gave the command grub-install /dev/sdb after checking (with fdisk) that the new disk was indeed sdb, while the disk on which CentOS is running remains sda. I assumed that this would leave the MBR on sda unchanged, so that I would be able to boot to the current system as before. But I found that this was not the case; on rebooting the machine hung, with a repeating "-" on the screen. The only way I was able to recover the current system was to use a CentOS Live USB stick I had to install CentOS on a spare partition (sda12). With that system running I was able to mount the old system (on sdb10) as /mnt, and the boot partition (sdb2) as /mnt/boot, and then give the command grub-install --root-directory=/mnt /dev/sda On re-booting the old system came up. (I may say I also tried to run grub-install from the USB stick, but was completely unable to do this so as to re-install the old system. Basically, the old disk had become sdb, while the USB stick was sda. So I mounted /dev/sdb10 as /mnt and /dev/sdb2 as /mnt/boot, and gave the command grub-install --root-directory=/mnt /dev/sdb I then removed the USB stick, and tried - unsuccessfully - to re-start the machine.) But I'm puzzled by my experience, which seems to suggest that running grub-install /dev/sdb actually affects the MBR on sda. OT hard disk geometry

My only excuse for asking this question here is that I am running CentOS-6.5 on my HP MicroServer. I recently purchased a 2TB WD hard drive (WD20ESRX), and was surprised to find that the power-connector on this drive did not seem to be in the correct place for the drive-bay. (The drive bay closes, but the disk does not spin.) The power connector on the drive is further from the SATA connectors than on the other 4 drives I have in my two MicroServers - it is about 2/3 of the way across the back of the drive, on the opposite side to the SATA connectors. I'm surprised because I always thought that the positions of the connectors on SATA hard drives was standard. How can I find whether or not a hard drive will connect properly in the drive-bay? I'm having problems where my upstream bandwidth is being saturated. I've narrowed it down to a DNS issue of some type. If I stop the named service then my bandwidth drops to "normal" according to my untangle firewall. I'm running bind-9.3.6-20.P1.el5_8.6. Well, it is not running KLIPS but netkey, anyways I feel not comfortable about disabling selinux on a ipsec router. I am not sure how to handle possible probems in this case, too. If I decide not to disable selinux, and I run into problems, should I a) report it to redhat as a bug, because it is b) disable selinux because ipsec is not meant to work with selinux Maybe just the verify script should be fixed? Maybe I should ask RedHat about this, hm. And finally, do you encounter network related SElinux errors with IPSec, both 5 and 6? -- Kind Regards, Markus

Upgrading Perl (modules) / RequestTracker

I'm attempting to install RequestTracker on CentOS 6.5. Running "make testdeps" as recommended by RT's installation guide, I'm presented with lists of missing Perl modules. One of these lines reads: Encode >= 2.39 ...MISSING Now, "yum whatprovides '*/Encode.pm' " informs me that that module is part of the core Perl distribution, and is installed on my system. Opening the file itself reveals: # $Id: Encode.pm,v 2.35 2009/07/13 00:49:38 dankogai Exp $ so I know that I have version 2.35 of that module installed, and obviously that's < 2.39. So I need to get 2.39 installed. What is the correct way to do this on CentOS? The last time I had to do anything like this, it was on a Debian box, I went through the process recommended by the guys in #perl, and was left with a broken system that was a real joy to piece back together...

It seems to me that there's some confusion on your part about what a SATA power connector is... The SATA edge connector is divided in two parts, a larger one and a narrower one. The narrower one is the signal, or data, connector. The larger one is the power connector. Some older drives also had an additional common Molex connector for power, for compatibility reasons, since at first only a few power supplies had the SATA power connector. Note that the Molex connector does not enable the hot-plugging and unplugging of SATA drives. This needs the 3.3V supply that only the SATA connector provides. As far as I can see, the ST3250318AS does not have such a connector. The manual for the ST3250318AS is here: http://www.seagate.com/staticfiles/support/disc/manuals/desktop/Barracuda%2… On page 28 you can read about the SATA cables and connectors. The pins you refer to, which are not present on the WD at the same position, are NOT power connections, that is a jumper block as you can read on the first image of page 28. The manual states the following: « It is usually not necessary to set any jumpers on the drive for proper operation; however, if you connect the drive and receive a “drive not detected” error, your SATAequipped motherboard or host adapter may use a chipset that does not support SATA speed autonegotiation. If you have a motherboard or host adapter that does not support autonegotiation: -Install a jumper as shown in Figure 1 below to limit the data transfer rate to 1.5 Gbits per second (and leave the drive connected to the SATA-equipped motherboard or host adapter that doesn’t support autonegotiation) or -Install a SATA host adapter that supports autonegotiation, leave the drive jumper block set to “Normal operation” (see Figure 1 below), and connect the drive to that adapter. This option has the benefit of not limiting the drive to a 1.5 Gbits/sec transfer rate. » I think this is not a power connector issue. The WD is a SATA3 drive (6gb/s). Are you sure that your motherboard supports SATA3 drives? Maybe SOME ports support them while others do not? If not, can you force the WD to operate in a lower mode? Some drives can, either by hardware or software.

Software RAID1 Failure Help

I am running software RAID1 on a somewhat critical server. Today I noticed one drive is giving errors. Good thing I had RAID. I planned on upgrading this server in next month or so. Just wandering if there was an easy way to fix this to avoid rushing the upgrade? Having a single drive is slowing down reads as well, I think. Thanks. The server's manual recommends filling the drive bays in the 1,2,3,4 order. At this point, you should check the HP support page for the server, Look for controller firmware updates, BIOS updates, troubleshooting advice and so on. Did you try to connect the drive alone? If it is detected alone, you will have a clue there. Some drives don't go along with some others when installed in the same pair of ports, for example. I would also suspect the cable. I have had more problems with SATA cables than I could expect. Also, the drive itself can be defective. I once received two new WD high end drives that couldn't be detected by any controller and I had to return them. The new ones worked fine.

With some SATA drives the mode change can only be done by a software utility. Some of them don't have jumpers at all.

Multi-tab, Expact support, connections tree, connection , user and password saving (I know they should not be saved). Raid on centos

Ok I've a HP mircoserver that I'm building up. It's got 4 bays for be used for data that I'm considering setup up woth softwere raid (mdadm) I've 2 x 2TB 2 x 2.5 TB and 2 x 1TB, I'm leaning towards usig the 4 2.x TB is a raid 5 array to get 6TB. Now the data is on the 2.5TB disks currently. So the plan so far. Building the array as a degraded raid 5 with the 2 x 2TB disks that are emply. Copy the data from one of the 2.5TB disks on to array. Add now empty 2.5TB disk to the Array and wait for it to rebuild. Copy contents of remaining 2.5TB disk 2 array. Add now empty 2.5TB disk to the Array and wait for it to rebuild. So questions... Is the above a stupid idea? Do I need to get involved in gptids? on disks this size? What format should I create the file system as? Should I get lvm involved somewhere? Any pointers would be kindly appreciated. Jeff

I just updated my quad-processor X64 machine (AMD Phenom(tm) II X4 945 Processor) to the latest CentOS 5 xen kernel (2.6.18-371.4.1.el5xen) and I am getting occasional "BUG: soft lockup - CPU#n stuck for X s! [swapper:0]" messages. I did some net searching, and found some bugzilla reports (https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=649519 and http://bugs.centos.org/view.php?id=4488) but neither are shown as resolved. The machine *seems* to be running alright (it is not hanging or anything). Is this something I need to worry about? Should I revert to the older kernel (2.6.18-371.3.1.el5xen)? Virtual Hosts question

I am running Wordpress on a CentOS 6.5 server which is behind a router. The private IP is 192.168.0.99, the public URL is X.com (name changed). I have two virtual hosts in my httpd.conf file. The second one, listed below, is for Wordpress and it is accessed with http://X.com/d4i or http://www.X.com/d4i. They work fine. Actually, not show, I have more Wordpress virtual hosts, and they are accessed with http://X.com/s1, http://X.com/s2, etc. and they work. I want the first virtual host to be a default and accessed whenever a user types http://X.com (no sub directory). There is a valid /var/www/html/index.html file. Unfortunately it doesn't work. The error is "Directory index forbidden by Options directive: /var/www/wordpress/" and googling didn't help. I have my httpd.conf and error.log below. Console access to kvm guest running WindowsV7

i86_64 CentOS-6.5 I have installed a Windows instance as a kvm guest on a host running CentOS-6.5. I can access the desktop through the virt-manager console and everythign seems to work, although the mouse cursor seems to get lost from time to time. The virt-manager console display supports various resolutions but when I re-size the desktop display remains essentially a square inside a letter box. What other methods are available to open the windows desktop from the CentOS-6.5 host console or by remote access that allow me to have a re-sizable MS-Windows desktop display for this guest running on my normal (gnome2) desktop? NFS not recognizing available file space

Hi, I have a server running under CentOS 5.8 and I appear to be in a situation in which the NFS file server is not recognizing the available space on a particular disk (actually a hardware RAID-6 of 13 2Tb disks). If I try to write to the disk I get the following error message [root@nas-0-1 mseas-data-0-1]# touch dum touch: cannot touch `dum': No space left on device However, if I check the available space, there seems to be plenty [root@nas-0-1 mseas-data-0-1]# df -h . Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on /dev/sdb1 21T 20T 784G 97% /mseas-data-0-1 [root@nas-0-1 mseas-data-0-1]# df -i . Filesystem Inodes IUsed IFree IUse% Mounted on /dev/sdb1 3290047552 4391552 3285656000 1% /mseas-data-0-1 I don't know if the following is relevant but the disk in question is served as one of 3 bricks in a gluster namespace. Based on the test with touch, which is happening directly at the NFS level, this seems to be an NFS rather than gluster issue. I couldn't find any file in /var/log which had a time that corresponded to the failed touch test and I didn't see anything in dmesg. We have tried rebooting this system. What else should we look at and/or try to resolve or debug this issue? Thanks. Pan in 6.2??

I can't seem to get a way to install Pan in CentOS, and I need it badly. I follow most busy lists, including this one, on Gmane using Pan (and, no, Gmane per Web is no use to me. I have some obscure allergy to webmail). Does anyone know an rpm (one of Fedora's, for instance) that I can install and not immerse myself in dependency hell?

Last time I checked on RPM Pbone search, there was not a current packe\age compatible with Centos 6. I took one from SRPM from rawhide and rebuilt it. The newer packages have a different kind on init script that Fedora uses.

UEFI booting

Hi All, I received a Intel Nuc D34010WYK. nice and small. I installed 6.5 x86_64 on it in LEGACY boot mode on the mSATA disk. All worked except sound. In process of trying to get that working I saw posts about Need to not use LEGACY boot mode for HDMI sound to work. I am trying to find a document on how to use the UEFI boot on 6.5 Any great resource out there for that? Thanks, Jerry

yum update tries and fails to install libreswan

On 6.5, I've got openswan installed, but yum update is wanting to install libreswan. If libreswan is intended to replace openswan, wouldn't the appropriate yum transactions have been created to remove opnswan first? I'm stumped. Advice appreciated. Read only nfsroot and diskless booting CentOS 6?

Does anyone have any good how-to's or documentation on setting up read only root NFS for pxe booting diskless computers? A few months ago I stumbled upon an official Redhat doc through a google search(not hosted by redhat and I cannot find it anywhere on the Redhat site) written by Dave Kline named "Configuring diskless clients with Red Hat Enterprise Linux" from 2011. It seemed to be a work in progress but the steps in it did work for doing nfsroot for one diskless client only. It did not have any explanation for doing read only nfsroot or how to deal with /var for multiple systems. I know there is a file in /etc/sysconfig/readonly-root but I could not get it working correctly. I did kludge together something for /var where during the init process I created a tmpfs for /var and rsync'd a copy of /var from an nfs mount. This worked, but again I felt it was a kludge to a proper solution. Although I got this working for booting an old bios based Dell and a VM via PXE boot, I don't know if it will work for newer UEFI based computers. I'm just looking to boot about 20 or so small modern PC's into a stripped down gnome desktop with a few apps installed. I still have not decided on the diskless clients I want to use. I was thinking either something like the low end intel NUC or one of the small AMD APU based PC's. David C Miller.
