Experience with BTRFS?

Was wondering if anyone here could weigh in on using BTRFS for CentOS 6 in a "near production" environment? I've been using ZFS on Linux and am very happy with the results so far, but don't particularly want to put all my eggs in one basket. Our application architecture allows us to have multiple, concurrent filesystems in mirror so I have the option of running a system under production-like environment without risking actual loss of customer data. In any event, we will be triple redundant at the application level, with ZFS on one file store, RAID/LVM/EXT4 on another, and possibly BTRFS on the third. Of course, I would want to use AT LEAST "release candidate" quality filesystem, but the ability of ZFS and BTRFS to check for errors and fix without downtime hold a tremendous amount of weight. The file stores are big enough that it is a days-long process to bring an offline file store back online. It would seem that BTRFS is slightly more flexible than ZFS, EG the ability to add RAID-levels for improved redundancy after initial creation without taking the system(s) offline. Anybody using BTRFS for real, sustained-load, 24x7 environment? -Ben

Scheduler Elevator Deadline

In past on my machines with single drive or software RAID I have always had to change elevator to deadline. Mainly due to fact I was running email server with a great deal of I/O. Switching from CFQ to Deadline made a huge difference. I am wandering if with a hardware RAID controller should I still switch too Deadline or does the RAID controller do reordering etc. for me? Likely best answer is to try it. Doubt it would hurt anything to still switch too Deadline if I have plenty of CPU to spare. I am also trying to move all my servers to OpenVZ for hardware independence. When I need more disk space, CPU, etc. I just backup and move it. Perhaps there are gotchas there? Thanks.

Clonezilla-live is a CD you boot to save/restore images - and there is also a network server version for PXE booting and image storage. The good part is that it can handle windows along with most linux versions. The down side is that the restore disk has to be the same size or larger. Rear is a set of shell scripts that use your own system tools to build a bootable image containing the scripts you need to partition, format, and restore (pretty much exactly what you are doing but with more options). It is really intended as a backup with a fast simple restore back on the same hardware, but you have an opportunity to change the disk layout if needed so it works for cloning or moving a working system. In an case, the other thing new in 6.x is that you need to remove the udev rules for the NICs or update them with the new MAC addresses or the cloned machine will start its ethx names above the old ones, plus fix the /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-ethx files like you did in 5.x. -- Les Mikesell lesmikesell(a)gmail.com

Hello List, I want to boot into single user mode and run a script automatically. I have been looking for a couple of hours and have found one solution I don't like. How can I get the shell that is started in single user mode to run a script. My one solution was to add a profile in /etc/profile.d/ that called the script. Is this the only way to do it? I'm suddenly noticing multiple threads named "ImageDecoder" showing up in the output of top (when threads are turned on with "H"). I've no clue what this is, and haven't found out much about it by searching. virtualisation

Hi, I run a small company and I would like to virtualise our setup. My internet provider offers a cloud server running CentOS. The server is managed by vmware software, they haven't been able to tell me exactly what. I wanted to know is it possible to virtualise such a setup, and Have CentOS running as the virtual OS that every client sees. Is there a solution similar to vmware view + client for CentOS servers? CentOS 6.4 died on me again. Didn't leave any traces that I could find. The screen just suddenly went black. Couldn't switch to another virtual terminal. Pushing the reset button worked. odd automount issue

We're seeing, in the log, automount trying (and failing) to mount a few directories NFS in the middle of the night. For example: 03:49:50 <my own workstation> automount[7872]: key "httpd" not found in map source(s) It doesn't seem to be triggered by the pen testers, nor by logs (I think), so we're all at a loss to guess what's triggering this. Anyone have any thoughts on it? Most of our systems are 6.5, btw. mark

I want to ask about some Kernel level operations.

I want to make sure that while compiling as root nothing will break down inside the machine. I want to compile software on a Xeon SERVER. The basic issue is that there is a recommendation to not compile it as a root user. I have compiled software as a root user more then once and I am not sure why would there is a need to run it as non-root user? I have taken a look at the /proc/ FS but I do not see anything that can harm anything yet. From my aspect it's just background of electricity noise. I will be happy to hear from experience of others about it. Thanks, Eliezer

Does anyone have any "security appliance" DVR, and can you a) telnet or b) ssh into it? Also, I have read that on a lot of the low-end ones, like Swann, port 9000 is completely open, but it's not clear to me from the hack post <http://console-cowboys.blogspot.com/2013/01/swann-song-dvr-insecurity.html> whether I could ssh in there, or rsync from a server through that port. mark

Memory leak - how to investigate

My web & name server runs out of memory from time to time, to the point where it's completely unresponsive to anything. At that point reset is the only alternative. (Or, as this is a virtual guest, I just say "virsh destroy"). But why this happens - I would like to know. The host in question is a KVM guest, and runs CentOS 6.4. The hash rounds control is now working, mostly. At the maximum rounds setting it took 14 to 19 seconds depending on which PC I was on. I needed to bring the delay down to around 1 to 2 seconds. It's not working as the documentation describes. With both libuser.conf and login.defs set to ranges of 900000000 to 999000000 and pam.d/password-auth-ac set to 900000000, the actual rounds on both SL and CentOS were 9999999 or < 1.1% of what it should have been. This doesn't matter to me, as I need it faster, not slower. In pam.d/ both password-auth and system-auth are links to password-auth-ac and system-auth-ac respectively. These files clearly state: # This file is auto-generated. # User changes will be destroyed the next time authconfig is run. which is sometimes, but not always true. If a rounds number remains in both password-auth and system-auth after authconfig --updateall is run, that is the number which is used, except the maximum value is 9999999 and not 999999999. I got 1000000 to work on both SL 6.3 and CentOS 5.10, and authentication took just about 2 seconds on both systems. On CentOS 5.10 I could find no PAM documentation anywhere that described the rounds option; I had to rely entirely on the brief blog brought to my attention by the S-L-users list member. On SL 6.3 the PAM rounds option is documented in man 8 pam_unix. If I'm reading this correctly, the proper file to edit would be /etc/pam.d/login where the line "password sufficient pam_unix.so sha512 rounds=1000000 shadow nullok try_first_pass use_authtok" should be added. Password hash rounds control seems to be almost unused. I got no responses in the CentOS 5 Security forum or on the general CentOS email list. People do not seem to understand how important this can be to password security. According to the oclHashcat (hashcat.net) documentation on the fastest GPU enabled PC they have tested, they get 797 million CPS (cracks per second) against SHA512. If the super fast PC is compared to the single CPU PC with no GPU, using the only algorithm common to all tests (NTLM), there is a speed difference of 1981 times. This suggests roughly 400,000 CPS against SHA512 on the single CPU PC they tested. (Each hashing algorithm interacts differently with the various hardware test configurations, so using one algorithm to estimate how another will perform on a different machine is only a crude estimate. Below, the numbers are discussed like reliable estimates, but until empirical evidence establishes the actual rates in a specific situation, none are reliable.) The Hashcat single CPU machine has an AMD Phenom II X6 1090T clocked at 3.8 GHz. The test times of single CPU PCs without GPUs are relevant because the GPU enabled, oclHashcat, cannot run a simple dictionary word list with no transformations. oclHashcat must have, brute force characters added to either or both ends of the words in a list. To run a list of the 10,000 most common passwords, without transformations, you need to use the single CPU Hashcat or the deprecated GPU oclHashcat-plus. It seems there is no efficient way to make use of a massively parallel architecture using a simple word list. oclHashcat also cannot process the "Rule-based Attack" which corresponds with the transformations found in John the Ripper. Again one must use the single CPU Hashcat or the deprecated oclHashcat-plus. So, oclHashcat is blindingly fast with a GPU on brute force and related attacks but cannot process the most obvious dictionary or do the most productive transformations of a dictionary containing real words and names. The most productive transformation is checking the first character, and only the first character, for upper and lower case, in combination with appending 1, 2, or 3 digits to the end of the word. The third digit would be very low yield compared to the first, but still very high compared to any pure brute force attack. If these issues are indicative of a problem that does not fit well with a massively parallel architecture, and not limitations of the oclHashcat developers, there are significant implications for password security. Simply put, password hash round controls can be used to deny crackers most of the space where modified dictionary attacks get the weak, but not blatantly bad, passwords. If Hashcat is run against the default configuration of SHA512 on my desktop PC, roughly 240,000 CPS seems plausible. Unless there is a fast implementation of SHA512, the use of 1,000,000 hash rounds, which takes about 2 seconds to authenticate on an AMD Phenom II X6 1090T, should slow the the cracking process down to about 0.5 CPS, or more than a five orders of magnitude difference. A simple list of the 10,000 most common passwords might take perhaps 5.5 hours with a million round SHA512, rather than about 5 seconds against the default SHA512. On most systems, the top 10,000 passwords, should get 70% to 95% of the passwords. Five hours isn't very long but it's a lot longer than 5 seconds. Where the slowdown really hurts the cracker is in the subsequent runs of reduced efficiency but still productive dictionaries and transformations. One option might be to use the next next million most common passwords. A PC 4 times as fast as the Hashcat single CPU PC should approximate a current, high end PC, and run about 4 CPS against the million rounds SHA512. The million words takes just under 70 hours; that should crack another few percent. Next might be a small 35,000 word dictionary of common names and and mostly common words. The most productive transformations should be both upper and lower case on the first letter, plus 1 through 3 digits appended to the end. That's 77.7 million test passwords taking just about 225 days. If a PC is 4 times faster than the Hashcat test PC against the standard configurations of SHA512, that is 1.6 million CPS. The million rounds configuration takes 228 days for the first 78.7 million test passwords; the default SHA512 configuration is 49 seconds. One is doable but takes commitment, patience, and resources; the other is trivial. Each successive dictionary plus transformations tends to get larger with a lower positive result rate. Any sane person will stop earlier, with regards to how many dictionaries are used, when they see they are faced with an abnormally high number of hash rounds; it shows up very plainly in the hash, just after the "$6$" as "rounds=1000000". A two second delay for logins or su's may seem like a lot, but we wait longer many times a day for various computer events, none of which get us the added security that a million rounds on a sound hashing algorithm with good salts gets us. A one to two second delay is quite perceptible. If this is not acceptable, then a target time between 0.1 and 0.2 seconds should not be noticeable, but still imposes a massive penalty on the cracker. This is a security freebie. For a fairly minor configuration change, system administrators can role back cracking times 2 or more decades. They only need to determine what is an acceptable delay for authentication on their systems, and how may hash rounds it takes to get in that range. Right now, I'm looking into Zmodo, R-Tech and CIB security. Anyone have a) opinions on the quality of the hardware from any of those manufacturers (yeah, I know, they're just branded hardware), and/or whether we can do the ssh or telnet in to do what we need? *Extremely* frustrating, since they're all running embedded Linux, that so many say IE and Active X.... mark

Are VMAC drivers stable?

Hi, I'm currently looking into the VMAC options that Keepalived had to offer. This all looks very nice, but now I heard that the VMAC driver in the linux kernel is not really stable if you are not on a 3.2 kernel or later. Can anyone here tell me some more about this? I've moved most of my user's PCs from OpenSuse (11.x, unmaintainend now) to CentOS 6.4. On my old OpenSuse latex was "texlive-latex-2010" and current version on CTAN is texlive-2013. But on CentOS 6.4 I've only the old texlive-latex-2007 and several sty files available on my previous config are not available now and users cannot compile their previous documents. Is there a Yum repo from where I can install a more uptodate latex environment for CentOS6.4 ? samba vs LDAP - can I see LDAP logs, please?

Hi, I'm setting up Samba to authenticate against an LDAP Server. I have the basic setup running but authentication fails. I'm 95% sure that the LDAP config is still wrong but the guy I'm setting this up for doesn't really come up with the proper info. I have set log level = 5 and get tons of irrelevant info. What I'd like to see is the LDAP queries that the samba server issues. But I have no idea which magic switch will make this happen. My google-fu seems to be bad today, too as I cannot find any relevant info either. Help! -dirk

Single sign-on for CentOS-6

Does anyone here use a Samba4 setup for single sign-on for MS_Win workstations and CentOS-6 boxes? Does anyone here use it for imap and/or smtp authentication? We are experimenting with replacing our existing Microsoft domain controllers with Samba4 based controllers and are contemplating moving all authentication for all our systems, Microsoft and CentOS based, over to Samba when, or if, this replacement successfully completes. Does anyone have any references for using CentOS with Samba domain controllers that they can recommend? idea: "hybrid" iso images?

In order to create a bootable CentOS installation USB thumb drive, there are several steps one must follow. The process often involves using a Windows box, which can be kinda annoying. The Linux Mint distro has what they call a "Hybrid" iso image. (see: http://community.linuxmint.com/tutorial/view/744 ) This image can be written to a thumb drive and used for installation simply by performing: # dd /path/to/image.iso of=/dev/sdb (where /dev/sdb is the thumb drive device). This thumb drive can now be booted and used for installation. The same image.iso file can be written to CD/DVD to create the installation media as well. Is this a complicated ISO build process? I'm frequently installing to systems without CD/DVD drives, so this would come in handy. Thanks! Yumex in 6.5 minimal -

When I start yumex as user it displays but stops with an error message that the backend is not running. However "yumex --root" starts and runs normally. For example: On systems with business applications that store transaction files we have a dedicated lv mounted at /var/data/appname (for web apps) or /var/spool/appname (for everything else). Hi! I recently encountered a situation when a x86_64 package is dependent on i686 packages.. Does anyone with packaging experience know why this could be necessary? What arguments (logical and technical) can i bring to the said packager in order to stop this chain of dependencies? Thanks! Adrian

Understanding iostat

We have a load balancer/session server that manages sessions in small files. I did a grep on the directory of session files and the server load went from 0.50 to 10.x, for all intents and purposes we were down until I canceled the grep. According to this article on http://www.thattommyhall.com/2011/02/18/iops-linux-iostat/ tps is roughly analogous to iops. Running iostat on the device reports a tps that sometimes hits as high as 2000. Given a fairly standard 7200 RPM SATA drive, with potential IOPS as high as perhaps 100, how is this even remotely possible? Is it due to sequential writes? Thanks, Ben

NIS or not?

Hi all, We're getting to a point in our linux environment where it's starting to be cumbersome to keep shadow and passwd-files up-to-date for the users to login on each computer. Scripts can only get us so far. 8-/ I've looked a bit into central login systems for linux, and NIS and LDAP seem to be prevalent. NIS being the simpler-to-setup solution for small to medium networks as I understand it, while LDAP is the more modern and scalable solution. See eg http://www.yolinux.com/TUTORIALS/NIS.html or http://sysadmin-notepad.blogspot.se/2013/06/nis-server-setup-on-rhelcentos.…. NIS-wise, what is a "small to medium network"? We have currently about 20-30'ish linux clients and servers, and the environment is not likely to increase much beyond this point. Is a 30ish-computer setup, a small network? The only thing I'm trying to accomplish is a system which will allow me to keep user accounts and passwords in one place, with one place only to administrate. NIS seems to be able to do that. Installing on USB Flash Drive

Is it possible to install CentOS on a USB Flash Drive. Have boot sector, / and /boot on USB drive then put /home, etc on a software raid array of the physical drives. Thought there used to be motherboards with SDHC slots that you could use to boot off.

The current domain controller host is from c.2004 and the software is Microsoft Advanced Server 2000. The Windows 7 workstations work with this AD but there are a few quirks. As the equipment is well past its best before date we need to replace it. We have virtualised just about everything else saving only the desktop workstations and this is another candidate for virtualisation. As a company we are moving everything we can to FOSS and away from proprietary interests. Therefore the combination of moving from MS-AS2000 and a dedicated host to Samba4 running on a virtualised guest seems an attractive option, provided that it works. Thus my question. The research I have done seems quite promising. It is now possible to promote a Samba4 server to an AD domain controller and to transfer all the Flexible Single Master Operations (FSMO) roles to it. It should then be possible to promote a second virtualised Samba4 server running on a different virtualised guest running on a second hardware host as a domain controller. Once done then the original AD host can be demoted and shutdown. Providing Samba4 works as described of course, which is why I am asking if anyone else has done it. There remains an issue with the SysVol replication, there is not any, but this can be worked around via rsync and cron. However, this means that all directory maintenance has to be performed on just one of the DCs, which effectively returns us to the days of Primary/Secondary DCs. Since in our case we are down to just one AD as it is this is not a hardship. smartctl: is my disc dying?

I've got a 1Tb USB disc that appears to be dying - eg it took about 10 days (!) to run 'badblocks -nsv /dev/sdc' and it only did less than 2% in that time. Read access became _really_ slow. So there's definitely something amiss and I've got it offline. There's no drama about the content as I have other backups and I'm resigned to junking the thing, but I'm curious about the fact that smartctl doesn't seem to report any errors. I tried a short and a long test but nothing in there seems to be alarming - in fact it says PASSED!! - but the output is pretty opaque and maybe I've been foxed by ambiguity. Anyone care to comment on it? Hi. I had to replace a disk that was part of a mirrored pare attached to "Intel Corporation 82801 SATA RAID Controller" At boot the raid bios says that the rebuild with take place within the OS. Bit disk activity seems very low. How can I tell the progress of the rebuild ? Thanks G

Using ATI Radeon X1300 Video Card with Centos 6.5

I have a ATI Radeon X1300 video card installed in a ThinkPad Advanced Docking Station where the laptop runs Centos 6.5. Upon Googling it seems that Centos 6.4 broke compatibility with the kmod-fglrx-legacy driver and that the only way around it is to downgrade X to an older version. However, the last note seems to be from before summer and I was hoping that there might have been some additional work done and it could now be used with Centos 6.5. I am not too keen on downgrading stuff since I am a relative newcomer to Linux... Does anyone have any information? Thanks.

Booting problem after update, how to track order of starting services

Hi. I have updated system/server that worked for a long time. It was upgrade from 6.4 to latest. After restart, system freezes after most/all of the daemons are booted. From interactive mode I found out that services starting are: ... ... atd jexec atieventsd libvirtd certmonger libvirt-guests local nxsensor nxserver webmin As soon as I allow webmin to pass, system freezes. BUT, if I stop after nxserver, and leave booting process at question weather to start webmin, and I login via SSH, I can start webmin. I have a rule in iptables to drop certain packets from addresses, like: iptables --list | grep 37 DROP all -- 37.0.0.0/8 anywhere So I am wondering how this got through??? [Jan 27 02:36:52] NOTICE[9298][C-000005ce] chan_sip.c: Call from '' ( 37.8.28.217:10024) to extension '888888011972592871997' rejected because extension not found in context 'default' Shouldn't the firewall have dropped it? I've seen similar cases where a USB drive appears to fail but the SMART reports success. The most recent was a 500 GB disk which had internally a Seagate Barracuda SATA drive. It appeared to work well until I sent it a largish (7GB) tarball. As well as SMART I ran a surface check and exercise, all passed. The tar kept failing. I can't test further, the disk has been broken up for destruction, but I wonder if the problem is the disk or the USB/SATA conversion board? If there is some sort of buffer in the interface that is filling, then the behaviour you describe makes sense. I am unable to find my windows share in ~/.gvfs

Hello All, I am facing a strange issue, I use eclipse and I was using Ubuntu earlier, Now I am trying with Centos. As in my Ubuntu i Can find my share in ~/.gvfs. but now I am unable to locate the same in Centos(release 6.5 Final). I have also checked /var/run/ and I dont have /run in my system So can some one please help me how can i get it in Centos. Repodata filename problem in CentOS-6.5-x86_64-bin-DVD1.iso ?

During installation, after the partitioning stage, anaconda logs an error trying to access the file repodata/0dafccfdbf892f02acca8267ade4bdcee7280a682e65dc7e29145f3341fd7a8c-primary.sqlite.bz2 checking the USB drive as well as the downloaded ISO shows that the file is named repodata/0dafccfdbf892f02acca8267ade4bdcee7280a682e65dc7e29145f3341fd7a8c It seems that the filenames are truncated after the first dash e.g. b4e0b9342ef85d3059ff095fa7f140f654c2cb492837de689a58c581207d9632 should be b4e0b9342ef85d3059ff095fa7f140f654c2cb492837de689a58c581207d9632-c6-x86_64-comps.xml Renaming the files on the USB drive according to the information in repodata/TRANS.TBL appear to fix the problem and anaconda was able to proceed to package selection. The DVD ISO checksum is correct. I also compared the checksum files from another server in case the mirror I used had an outdated/bad version. Is the problem with the ISO, or is anaconda supposed to had figured out the filename based on TRANS.TBL but not doing so. The problem originally started with a C6.4 install but I've wiped that ISO so am unable to verify if the cause is the same.

EPEL problem

Hi, all. I'm trying to install the EPEL repo on a fully up to date CentOS 6.4. I'm using wget to download from my usual source but after I install it via `sudo rpm -ivh epel-xxxxx` it's not actually there in `/etc/yum.repos.d`. Trying to install it again, Yum just tells me it's already installed. I've no idea where it is installed if it is (which I don't think it is) so I'm stumped. Any help appreciated. Permissions for LAMP

I am running a Lamp server on a CentOS 6.5 box. It works fine, I am concerned that I may have the wrong file/dir permissions. The directories /var and /var/www are root:root and 755. For /var/www/html and all directories underneath I have apache:apache and 770. For all files under /var/www/html I have apache:apache and 660. Are these these permissions OK? Thank you, Joe

After this update, the dependencies have been resolved and the Python packages install as expected. NIC Throwing errors I dont understand

I am having an issue where eth1 is throwing some messages and stops responding. Restarting networking doesn't work and also just bringing down eth1 with 'ifdown' doesn't fix it. Can't install Python i686 on x86_64 system (centos 6.5)

Hello, This is my first time posting to the list adn I've run into a problem trying to install python-2.6.6-51.el6.i686 on my x86_64 bit system, which I updated to CentOS 6.5 this evening. I receive the following error: error: Failed dependencies: libpython2.6.so.1.0 is needed by python-2.6.6-51.el6.i686 python-libs(x86-32) = 2.6.6-51.el6 is needed by python-2.6.6-51.el6.i686 libpython2.6.so.1.0 is needed by python-devel-2.6.6-51.el6.i686 Now I've downloaded the python and python-devel i686 versions from a mirror and tried to install locally with 'sudo rpm -Uvh python-2.6.6-51.el6.i686 python-devel-2.6.6-51.el6.i686', but I always receive the same error. I tried 'sudo yum install python-2.6.6-51.el6.i686 python-devel-2.6.6-51.el6.i686 with again the same error. Brian Bernard

In comparison, browsing online mirrors such as http://ftp.linux.ncsu.edu/pub/CentOS/6.5/os/x86_64/repodata/ shows all the similar looking files have extensions. But the ISO's md5/sha1 checksums are correct. Based on the information in TRANS.TBL, I added the extensions to the files and anaconda was able to proceed to the package selection. I will start a new email to check if there is a problem with the ISO on mirrors.

Problem installing Centos 6.4/6.5 from USB stick seen as HDD by BIOS

I'm trying to install C6.5 on a USB stick (created using Fedora LiveUSB Creator). The problem is the machine using an Intel ITX board sets the USB stick as a HDD instead of a CDROM. During install, the DVD couldn't find the installer automatically and I must choose the HDD option for it to proceed to network/timezone/storage setup. After the storage partitioning, it will throw an error that it is unable to read package metadata. Although there is an option to edit the repo information, there isn't an option to specify a hard disk. Switching to console, attempts to mount /dev/sdb as /dev/cdrom or /mnt/sr0 met with failure because the USB drive is in use. Previously I used 6.4 and downloaded 6.5 thinking it might just be an issue with 6.4 but both failed at the same point. There doesn't appear to be anybody else who encounter the same problem on a quick google. Is this considered a bug with anaconda or is there some kind of workaround such as forcing the system to mount /dev/sdb as cdrom despite already being mounted/busy?

ipmi_si error on booting

I'm getting the (unintelligible to me) error message ipmi_si: Could not set up I/O space ERST: Failed to get Error Log Address Range when I try to boot any OS on the grub menu apart from the one I last installed. (Actually, Windows also boots properly.) I wonder if anyone has had this error message, and worked out where it comes from? I googled for it, and it has come up many times; but there seem to be several entirely different suggested causes. I am running CentOS-6.5 on an HP MicroServer. migrate ext3 to ext4

Hi all, I issued the commands on a single disk system: with two partitions / is linux sda1 and /home is sda3 yum -y update yum -y install e4fsprogs reboot umount /home tune2fs -O extents,uninit_bg,dir_index /dev/sda3 e2fsck -yfDC0 /dev/sda3 That worked just fine. I then had a different system that is software raid. where / is linux and md0 and /home is md1 yum -y update yum -y install e4fsprogs reboot umount /home tune2fs -O extents,uninit_bg,dir_index /dev/md1 at this point I get an error that invalid options for tune2fs Why is that and what to do next... The single disk sda3 worked fine. shouldnt the md1 work also. Thanks, Jerry

XFS : Taking the plunge

Hi All, I have been trying out XFS given it is going to be the file system of choice from upstream in el7. Starting with an Adaptec ASR71605 populated with sixteen 4TB WD enterprise hard drives. The version of OS is 6.4 x86_64 and has 64G of RAM. This next part was not well researched as I had a colleague bothering me late on Xmas Eve that he needed 14 TB immediately to move data to from an HPC cluster. I built an XFS file system straight onto the (raid 6) logical device made up of all sixteen drives with. > mkfs.xfs -d su=512k,sw=14 /dev/sda where "512k" is the Stripe-unit size of the single logical device built on the raid controller. "14" is from the total number of drives minus two (raid 6 redundancy). Any comments on the above from XFS users would be helpful! I mounted the filesystem with the default options assuming they would be sensible but I now believe I should have specified the "inode64" mount option to avoid all the inodes will being stuck in the first TB. The filesystem however is at 87% and does not seem to have had any issues/problems. > df -h | grep raid /dev/sda 51T 45T 6.7T 87% /raidstor Another question is could I now safely remount with the "inode64" option or will this cause problems in the future? I read this below in the XFS FAQ but wondered if it have been fixed (backported?) into el6.4? ""Starting from kernel 2.6.35, you can try and then switch back. Older kernels have a bug leading to strange problems if you mount without inode64 again. For example, you can't access files & dirs that have been created with an inode >32bit anymore."" I also noted that "xfs_check" ran out of memory and so after some reading noted that it is reccommended to use "xfs_repair -n -vv" instead as it uses far less memory. One remark is so why is "xfs_check" there at all? I do have the option of moving the data elsewhere and rebuilding but this would cause some problems. Any advice much appreciated. Steve

Hi Dennis, Keith, Thanks for your pointers. I tried disabling C-states and and pcie-aspm options. No luck so far. My box has to be rebooted once in every 2-3 days. Following is the last info in my syslog before reboot. You can try running the machine with the kernel option "pcie_aspm=off" and see if that helps and also try to disable C-States or Power Saving all together in the BIOS. The network device hung because it tried to go into power saving mode using ASPM and it failed and whole servers locked-up after being idle for a while because of a bug in Intel Processors regarding the deeper power saving modes (C-States) although these are supposed to be fixed since 6.3. CentOS-6.5 httpd-2.2.15 (centos) I am trying to understand how directory access control works in Apache-2.2. Does a means exist to revoke access in a subdirectory if access has been granted in a higher one? We restrict access to the entire site via htdigest but some directories are need to be further restricted by the group a user is assigned to. Problem installing Centos 6.4/6.5 from USB stick seen as HDD by BIOS

I'm trying to install C6.5 on a USB stick (created using Fedora LiveUSB Creator). The problem is the machine using an Intel ITX board sets the USB stick as a HDD instead of a CDROM. During install, the DVD couldn't find the installer automatically and I must choose the HDD option for it to proceed to network/timezone/storage setup. After the storage partitioning, it will throw an error that it is unable to read package metadata. Although there is an option to edit the repo information, there isn't an option to specify a hard disk. Switching to console, attempts to mount /dev/sdb as /dev/cdrom or /mnt/sr0 met with failure because the USB drive is in use. Previously I used 6.4 and downloaded 6.5 thinking it might just be an issue with 6.4 but both failed at the same point. There doesn't appear to be anybody else who encounter the same problem on a quick google. Is this considered a bug with anaconda or is there some kind of workaround such as forcing the system to mount /dev/sdb as cdrom despite already being mounted/busy?

I've certainly had some annoyances in the last couple-three years with t-bird. So, what are people's preferred mail tools, other than t-bird (or maybe mutt or pine.... <g>)? mark

VMware restricting to 3GB RAM

Hi, I am running VMware player on CentOS 5.4 and its working fine. However it does not allow me to increase the RAM more than 3GB. It keeps throwing error stating- "Requested memory size is greater than allowed maximum of 3072 MB. Could not initiate memory hot plug." I understand from few threads that 32bit OS has this kind of limitation but I am able to understand why I am seeing this issue when I am using 64bit OS and VMware player is also for 64bit. glusterfs-server package: what happened to it?

Most documents online suggest to install the glusterfs-package as if it was available directly in the repo, and therefore installable via a simple "yum install". Hi! this is surely a newbie question, so I should know the answer, but I'm fighting with mounting a CD such that filenames are NOT mapped to lowercase (I need to use its on-board tools for accessing files on it while mounted on Centos 6.5, and those tools assume uppercawse, since they assume the entire world runs Windoze.) but despite my best efforts, it keeps being mounted with UC-LC mapping enabled. here's what I've been trying: mount -t iso9660 -o norock,remount,ro,nosuid,nodev,uhelper=udisks,uid=500,gid=500,iocharset=utfi,mode=0400,dmode=0500 /dev/sr0 /mnt/cd and even this: umount /mnt/cd mount -t iso9660 -o norock,ro,nosuid,nodev,uhelper=udisks,uid=500,gid=500,iocharset=utfi,mode=0400,dmode=0500 /dev/sr0 /mnt/cd I've also tried using nojoliet both with and without norock, and also map=normal, all to no avail. I also tried the remount option using the original automount location in /media, and got no better results. I'm hoping someone out there can point me to what I'm doing wrong. CentOS 6.5 VirtualBox

Hi Is anyone here using VirtualBox? I've had it working rather well for some time, but after some recent upgrade or the other it's started exiting with a Segmentation fault just after startup, before windows are opened or anything. I've tried a few different versions, all with the same result. I'm using binary packages http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/rpm/el. So, have any of you lot seen this? sudo (+ldap+kerberos) not accepting password

So I have this centos 5.10 box which authenticates network users against ldap(authorizing)+kerberos(authentication). And I now would like to have sudo be able to allow admins (netgroup chinbeards) to sudo about. I am not using sssd though (yet). So, to me the sudo+ldap part of the transaction (authorization, kinda of what is mentioned in http://www.sudo.ws/sudoers.ldap.man.html and http://www.gratisoft.us/sudo/readme_ldap.html) seem to be fine. But, in the next step -- it asks for password -- is when things get interesting. At this point I would expect it to pass that to pam, which would then autenticate me with kerberos (I wonder if it would work by checking if I have a valid kerberos ticket. That is what happens when I, say, do ldapsearch. but I digress). Would it be due to pam not knowing about kerberos? Thanks for the reply. I put all the different certs into different subdirectories, so I know it's that one, e.g.: /apachepath/conf.d/cert1 /apachepath/conf.d/cert2 /apachepath/conf.d/cert3 It, too, complains about the "/apachepath/conf.d/cert3/domain.crt" file, which comes from the provider anyway. I know it's the correct/new/latest one (date,size and from tests). Hi I updapted the ssl certificate on the 15th of Jan using the providers update facility. Then I downloaded the new certificate, installed it and restarted httpd. Then I checked with the providers "ssl installation diagnostic tool" whether everything is fine - and it is, all reported good. Then I opened a browser, loaded the https website, checked the certificate and it's valid until 8/02/2017, which was reported by above, as well. I know I could turn certwatch off, but I like the warning as I have a few certs on different websites, domains and machines. How come certwatch is still complaining? Network card throwing messages I dont understand

I am having an issue where eth1 is throwing some messages and stops responding. Restarting networking doesn't work and also just bringing down eth1 with 'ifdown' doesn't fix it. I updated java-1.7.0-openjdk a few hours ago - it *was* listed as a critical security update, and I don't want yelling from rkhunter. The man page tells me I can tell it rkhunter --propupd <package name>... but it doesn't know the name above as a package. Been googling a bit, and cannot find a good example of a package (other than the manpage's coreutil). Anyone got an example, and/or why it doesn't know this package? mark
