Does anyone know a way to run a Scrabble program on CentOS? (I realize the obvious existence of Wine and of virtual machines; but my experience with both has been thoroughly unsatisfactory. So I'd much rather get a linux-native app.) There seem to be two proprietary Scrabble programs, one in which you play against the computer, and one in which you play against a remote friend. The latter is what I'm being asked for by Her Who Must Be Obeyed. virtualbox, lvextend, etc.

I'm using virtualbox with one of the tests I have for centos 6.4. I realized after creating the disk, the default was too small. I added more disk space with: VBoxManage modifyhd /Users/user/VirtualBox\ VMs/centos\ 6.x/centos\ 6.x.vdi --resize 25000 I then used this site to help me resize the lvm: http://community.spiceworks.com/how_to/show/2768-extending-lvm-partition-wi… but when I do: df -h I still see only the original 8gig disk (8gig total - 4gig data/4gig swap)). When I look at pvscan in lvm, it says 23.92GiB is the size of the volume. Why doesn't df see it correctly? Thanks, -wes

disk cloning ?

Dear All I needed to clone my disk to another hard drive . I did it as the following : #dd if=/dev/sdb of=/dev/sdc But after a while, the procedure ended with the "writing to /dev/sdc input/output error" message. Can you please let me know how can I overcome this as the fdisk now returns as " #fdisk /dev/sdc "I do not know how to handle files with mode 81a4 must set cylinders" What can I do at know ? Thank you

I recently ran into some problems using certain oVirt (3.3) features on CentOS 6.4 hosts. The solution was to use the qemu-kvm-rhev version from the EL6 RHEV repository: http://ftp.redhat.com/pub/redhat/linux/enterprise/6Server/en/RHEV/SRPMS/qem… It seems that this tree is not carried/built by CentOS. Are there any plans on the CentOS for carrying these packages? Is there anything offered in Centos that might convert an XML file to a plain text file? My hopes are that it is flexible enough to make the following type of line: <title>Guide</title> into something like: title: Guide along with all the other fields. Certain fonts missing from xlsfonts in Centos 6.4

I have a certain software on CentOS 6.4 that gave the following error: X Error of failed request: BadName (named color or font does not exist) Major opcode of failed request: 45 (X_OpenFont) Serial number of failed request: 15 Current serial number in output stream: 30 Running strace shows that the error happens just about here: writev(4, [{"-\2\21\0\4\0\240\0027\0\240\2-adobe-helvetica-bol"..., ... I thought some fonts were missing from my system, so I went on to insall all xorg-x11-fonts-* packages on my system. The Adobe fonts should be included in the xorg-x11-fonts-75dpi package. I thought the fonts may not be in the fonts path, so I ran xset q. The fonts seemed to be in the X font path. The actual scenario is the main hard disk is my centos machine and the second source hard disk connected to usb port and the target is the third hard disk connected to usb port. Is it still necessary to use gparted with live cd or there is another simple procedure for this scenario? In the meantime, If I want to format the target hard disk with the same geometry as the source hard disk what can I do to accomplish that ? Thank you

Installing CentOS via USB thumbdrive

I've been poking at this for quite a while, and have never been able to get it to work. I've found a couple links with some partial truths: http://syslint.com/syslint/how-to-make-a-usb-boot-disk-for-centosrhel-from-… http://brakkee.org/site/2013/05/09/creating-a-usb-install-for-centos-6-4/ The first one talks about converting a standard iso to a 'hybrid' image, using: 'isohybrid'. But it then instructs the reader to make a vfat partition on the thumbdrive, and DD the image to that partition. This seemed odd to me, since the image itself should have all that info. I've used hybrid images before, such as Linux Mint, and was simply able to dd directly to the device itself, ie: dd if=/path/to/hybrid.iso of=/dev/sdb (where sdb is the thumbdrive). But, I went along with it, and it failed-- unable to find 'isolinux.bin'. I've read this error is due to old/incompatible firmware, but I've booted other thumbdrive hybrid-built images many times, and have never seen this except in CentOS installations. So, I tried doing a dd directly to the thumbdrive device, rather than the partition. This actually looked like it was going to work. I got to the initial installer page, and proceeded through the Language and Keyboard questions. It then forgot where itself was, and asked me where the media for installation was. I selected Hard Drive, and /dev/sda1 showed up as default. I hit enter, and it continued further. But then it again forgot where the media was, and couldn't find the installation media. The second URL/instruction wouldn't boot at all. Has anyone successfully installed via USB? I remember reading some multi part instructions where the USB drive is formatted with some special tools, often involving Windows, and various files need to be copied to the USB drive. But I was hoping we were passed that by now. But then again, Dell firmware updates still want me to make a DOS bootable floppy. how to calculate mail storage/traffic used

Hi, we have to setup a server which gets a copy of all messages send and received by our mailserver as a 1:1 copy. Mails send to multiple recipients should be calculated and saved per user. (great if you usually have lost of mails send to groups of people.) So no dedublication should be used here. (e.g. save the message and refer the different recipients to it.) How can I calculate the current traffic in the best way to extrapolate the amount of space to be planed for the new server? We think to have a couples of days to be saved. Strange unexplainable CUPS problem after upgrade to 5.10

I manage a bunch of workstations at the Wendell Free Library. They are all diskless, boot via PXE and mount all of their file systems via NFS from a server. All of the machines are 32-bit and run CentOS (fully up-to-date running 5.10). There are two printers with queues managed on the server. The server 'shares' these printers on the local LAN (eg with all of the workstations). After the upgrade to 5.10, *one* of the machine no longer sees the printers. *Nothing* is different about its configuration files, since these files are mounted via NFS from the server, *like all of the other workstations*. The other workstations all see the printers shared by the server. I don't understand what is going on here. logical volume and drive names after mirroring a centos installation via rsync

I have a working CentOS5 installation on server A's first SATA drive (sda). I had an empty SATA drive on that server (sdb). I was asked to mirror the installation of server B (installed on first SATA drive, sda), also running CentOS5, to the second drive (sdb) of server A. I am unsure what should be done after mirroring to get the new system boot. What I have done already: - On server A/sdb I created the same partition layout and a little bit bigger logical volumes as on server B/sda plus created the filesystems (130G / fs and 200M /boot fs). The volume group and logical volumes have different names. I have mounted the new volumes on server A. - From server B/sda I rsynced all data to server A/sdb (excluding /dev/*,/proc/*,/sys/*,/tmp/*,/run/*,/mnt/*,/media/*,/lost+found) whitle most services were stopped on server B Now I would need to figure out how to boot to the CentOS installation on server A/sdb and I would like to ask about a few details: - I am confused about the logical volume names: which ones should I use on the new server's fstab, the old ones (rsynced from server B/sda) or the ones I used when creating the logical volumes from server A? If I need to use the new ones, should I update the names also somewhere else than fstab? - As the new installation will boot from sdb instead of sda, do I need to update this information somewhere (like /boot/grub/device.map) ? - How do I install grub on the second drive? Do I simply command from the A/sda installation: grub-install /dev/sdb ? - And to access this new grub I just mark the second drive as the boot drive in BIOS and boot, yes? - If I also wanted to boot to the new A/sdb system by using the grub in A/sda installation, what should the entry in /boot/grub/menu.lst look like, do I just change the hd(0,0) parameter to hd(1,0) and edit correct kernel and initrd values? Install to internal USB?

Saw a trick today, wondering if anybody else had done/tried this? Assume you have a 1U rackmount with 4 front-accessed drive bays, and you want all four bays for a 4-disk RAID5 storage. The idea is to use an internal USB adapter and a couple of bigger USB thumb drives to install to, RAID 1 style, freeing up all your external drive bays. At first, I didn't think that a thumb drive would hold enough for the O/S, but in actual production use for a file server with 14 TB of redundant storage, the OS actually uses less than 6 GB! Wireless problems

Hi guys, I have a problem with my Centos 6.4. I am experiencing a Wireless Disconnects, some time ago I had them constantly each 2-3minutes. After upgrading to new kernel (and other software from "Software Update" I am still exepriencing disconnects but every 10-15 minutes. It makes me angry because I am doing a lot of work with ftp servers. Card: *Atheros Communications Inc. IBM Storwize V3700 storage - device names

Hello, I have IBM Storwize V3700 storage, connected to 2 IBM x3550 M4 servers via fiber channel. The servers are with QLogic ISP2532-based 8Gb Fibre Channel to PCI Express HBA cards and run Centos 5.10 When I export a volume to the servers, each of them sees the volume twice, i.e /dev/sdb and /dev/sdc, with the same size. Previously I have installed many systems with IBM DS3500 series of storage and the servers see one disk per export. I am using the MPP drives from this package: http://support.netapp.com/NOW/public/apbu/oemcp/apbu_lic.cgi/public/apbu/oe… I came upon the IBM site, saying to configure multipath (I never did it for DS3500 series). When I did, a new device came, /dev/dm-7, but my goal is to have one /dev/sdX type of device and no device mapper. I read that Storwize support DMP RDAC, and DS support MPP RDAC, but does anyone else have experience with such setup and can give an advice/hint? Thanks in advance.

chipsets etc to avoid for CentOS 6.x

It's time to purchase hardware again, and I'm going through the usual "of that which is on the market, what will CentOS run without leaving new hardware collecting dust for a year"? I'm looking at a number of commodity-grade machines (ie: desktop grade will suffice) with reasonably fast CPUs and able to use at least 8GB each (preferably 32GB). These will be deployed as software development systems in run mode 3 (ie: no real graphical requirement). Does anyone have suggestions, assuming a CentOS 6.x install, what CPUs/chipsets, etc, to avoid? (Or alternately, which ones still commonly on the market are fine?) I've typically stuck to Intel CPUs, and prefer Gigabyte or Intel motherboards. I'd prefer to minimize the likelihood of non-working or marginally-working hardware. I've had a look at the supported RHEL hardware list, but they typically just list Xeon-based machines. Thanks in advance. Devin

3TB disk with 6.0.4 not booting

As you know I've been testing centos on an old mac pro. I have 1 disk left of 4 that I'm testing on. I had a 3TB disk and stuck it in and couldn't get centos to boot off of it. It would install, but not boot. I then got "old" disk 4 installed with it. Any idea why the 3TB disk doesn't work? I pulled out an os x 10.6.3 and that would install and boot. I resized the disk in osx and reinstalled centos, but centos still won't boot off the 3TB disk. Thanks, -wes

Workaround for (EL6.4) rdesktop-1.6.0-10 Woe

rdesktop has been spewing error messages since the update to CentOS 6.4. Aside from the continuous stream of errors in the terminal window from which it was launched, there are a number of usability issues in the remote session. The pointer does not change shape when moving over various window components such as column separators, window borders, etc. The background doesn't refresh within scroll bars, making it difficult to tell where the scroll handle is. We've also found that MS Visio will crash and hang the remote system if run within rdesktop. Other strange phenomenon are also manifest in various applications. In short, rdesktop 1.6.0-10 is buggy and unstable. See this upstream bug report for more: Bug 914279 - regression in 1.6.0-10.el6: Mousepointer and selections not drawn properly https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=914279 We've been putting up with it, hoping that an update would be published upstream. Even though this issue is affecting customers upstream, as evidenced in the bugzilla report, a bug-fix update doesn't appear to be imminent. I decided to rebuild the Fedora 19 SRPM on CentOS to resolve the issue. It appears from the bugzilla remarks that others have done this trivially. With a few simple precautions, we've done just that. I'm sharing our work-around in the hope that it will benefit others in similar circumstances. This process assumes you have a build machine properly setup with an rpmbuild environment. When does echo 0 > /selinux/inforce need to be used? I.e., where is selinux enforcing itself on the system to protect it? When I do yum install of some package, it seems to work (not being blocked). When would doing something not work because selinux is watching it (or whatever that process is doing)? Thanks, -wes

Running MacOSX as VM under CentOS 5.10?

Is it even remotely possible to run MacOSX (or Darwin) as VM under CentOS 5.10 / xen? Or am I better off not even trying and just getting a MacMini or MacBook to just jack into my LAN? I just need a 'build box' and possibly something to do light testing (eg does the program run? Does the GUI come up?). I don't really have the *physical* room for an iMac, unless the screen is tiny. syslog-ng or rsyslog?

Hi All. I've used syslog-ng for some time. I like it. I have a project in which I need to choose a central logging solution. What are your experiences with rsyslog? Is it more complex to setup than syslog-ng? Or maybe does it have some additional features? I am also thinking about using some gui tools for log parsing and graphing. May be proprietary/paid. Provide access to /home folder

I have a CentOS linux web server in which I have multiple web sites. I have many website programmers now doing the coding for all the sites. How can I provide a key-based authentication for the programmers in such a way that they have access only to /home folder ? They should be able to access only all the files inside /home and able to modify it. This is cPanel server in which all the sites comes under /home directory. Currently they are using separate passwords for every site. If I could give access to my developer inside /home folder, they would be able to do edit all the sites easily rather than having separate password for each site (eg : /home/site1 or /home/site2). Several. First, see if you CentOS supports that card. The alternative is to go to Highpoint's website, and look for the driver. You *might* need to get the source and build it - I had to do that a few months ago, on an old 2260 (I think it is) card, and had to hack the source -they're *not* good about updates. If you're lucky, they'll have a current driver or source. Second, on our HBR's (that's a technical term - Honkin' Big RAIDS... <g>), we use ext4, and RAID 6. Also, for about two years, I keep finding things that say that although ext4 supports gigantic filesystems, the tools aren't there yet. The upshot is that I make several volumes and partition them into 14TB-16TB filesystems. Besides, if you have a problem with a truly humongous RAID, the rebuild will finish sometime around next summer.... mark

mount.cifs install problem

Hello list After samba4 installation cant install cifs-utils. Is there an other way of mount an externall network drive without using mount.cifs? I try mount -t cifs //192.168.10.230/OpenShare/srvbackup /mnt/backup/ But I get "is not a valid block device" error I have centos-release-6-4.el6.centos.10.x86_64 This ext drive is also linked to a fedora server without problem. I ran: iptables -L and see this: Chain INPUT (policy ACCEPT) target prot opt source destination ACCEPT all -- anywhere anywhere state RELATED,ESTABLISHED ACCEPT icmp -- anywhere anywhere ACCEPT all -- anywhere anywhere REJECT all -- anywhere anywhere reject-with icmp-host-prohibited Does the REJECT all over-ride the ACCEPT all Would "DROP all" be better so people banging on the ports don't see a reply? I ran the gui tool to open ssh and it is in between ACCEPT all and REJECT all. Why does it work if there is a REJECT all after it? Thanks, -wes

I noticed in /etc/inittab that it has this line: # 0 - halt (Do NOT set initdefault to this) It makes sense, but what if it did get set to 0 or 6? Is there a way to boot to single-user mode anyway to edit the file and change it to a correct value? What if it is set to a negative number or a value > 6? Does it default to a valid value.

dear All, I'm spending the afternoon trying to build software raid using this ( excellent ) guide : http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/Install_On_Partitionable_RAID1 I'm doing this not only because this machine has no raid controller - I could go out and buy one - but also because I hope software raid will provide easier monitoring. This is a newly installed, updated Centos6.4 standard machine. So far I arrived at part1 step 4: -----> mdadm --add /dev/md_d0 /dev/sdb and this is on 16.6 % Looking at part 2 , step 2 : ------------> Edit /etc/fstab, you must change all mounts from using LABEL= to explicit device names, like /dev/md_d0p1, /dev/md_d0p2, ... I'm wondering where I can find the names md_d0p1, p2 and so on. Can anyone help me on this? Thanks very much. [OT] Building a new backup server

Guys, I was thrown a cheap OEM-server with a 120 GB SSD and 10 x 4 TB SATA-disks for the data-backup to build a backup server. It's built around an Asus Z87-A that seems to have problems with anything Linux unfortunately. Anyway, BackupPC is my preferred backup-solution, so I went ahead to install another favourite, CentOS 6.4 - and failed. The raid controller is a Highpoint RocketRAID 2740 and its driver is suggested to be prior to starting Anaconda by way of "ctrl-alt-f2", at which point Anaconda freezes. I've come so far as installing Fedora 19 and having it see all the hard-drives, but it refuses to create any partition bigger than approx. 16 TB with ext4. I've never had to deal with this big raid-arrays before and am a bit stumped. Any hints as to where to start reading up, as well as hints on how to proceed (another motherboard, ditto raidcontroller?), would be greatly appreciated. I had an issue recently where a package (openoffice) would not work correctly and: yum reinstall openoffice\* #did not help rpm -Va #did not find ANY issues (which surprised me when I did figure out what was wrong) however doing a (I did a more restricted, to openoffice files, version of) find /usr/ -not -perm -o+r -exec ls -lhd {} + find /usr/ -type d -not -perm -g+x -exec ls -lhd {} + find /usr/ -type d -not -perm -o+x -exec ls -lhd {} + found files that were not even set to write for ROOT (and in general had NO permission for anyone else)! The idea is basically that almost all files in /usr/ should be READABLE by any user and almost all directories should be READABLE & EXECUTABLE by all so that they can list and read the files in them. I don't know if the commands at http://www.cyberciti.biz/tips/reset-rhel-centos-fedora-package-file-perm ission.html would have fixed the issue, because I brute forced the perms to root writeable and then reinstalled the packages again. BTW, I still feel a little confused on what the OP's original problem was and why they are headed in the direction of a 'reinstall the system'. Seems a bit overkill for most problems. ZFS on Linux in production?

We are a CentOS shop, and have the lucky, fortunate problem of having ever-increasing amounts of data to manage. EXT3/4 becomes tough to manage when you start climbing, especially when you have to upgrade, so we're contemplating switching to ZFS. As of last spring, it appears that ZFS On Linux http://zfsonlinux.org/ calls itself production ready despite a version number of 0.6.2, and being acknowledged as unstable on 32 bit systems. However, given the need to do backups, zfs send sounds like a godsend over rsync which is running into scaling problems of its own. (EG: Nightly backups are being threatened by the possibility of taking over 24 hours per backup) Was wondering if anybody here could weigh in with real-life experience? Performance/scalability? -Ben PS: I joined their mailing list recently, will be watching there as well. We will, of course, be testing for a while before "making the switch".

I've posted here about this a number of times. The other admin I work with had been playing with it recently, with some real problems we'd been having, and this time, with a year or so's more stuff to google, and newer documentation, found the problem. What we'd been seeing: cd to an NFS-mounted directory, and from an NFS-mounted directory, tar -xzvf a 25M or so tar.gz, which unpacks to about 105M. Under CentOS 5, on a local drive, seconds; doing the above, about 35 seconds. Mount options included sync. Under 6.x, from the beginning, it was 6.5 to 7 *minutes*. The result was that we'd been keeping our home directory servers on 5. What he found was the mount option barrier. According to one or two hits I found, googling, it's not clear that 5.x even recognizes this option. From upstream docs, <https://access.redhat.com/site/documentation/en-US/Red_Hat_Enterprise_Linux…>, it's enabled by default, and affects *all* journalled filesystems. Remounting the drive with -o nobarrier, I just NFS mounted an exported directory... and it took 20 seconds. Since most of our systems are all on UPSes, we're not worried about sudden power loss... and my manager did a jig, and we're starting to talk about migrating the rest of our home directory servers.... mark

root password required

Hi, I've lost private key for my instance. So I've generated new Private/Public Keys, Created Image from my instance, and Launched new instance. Now I can ssh to this new instance: but it ask me for root password (which it did not on original instance): It looks like this is problem with MarketPlace AMI I was using originally: CentOS-6-x86_64-20120527-EBS-03-adc4348e-1dc3-41df-b833-e86ba57a33d6-ami-8f9af1e6.1 (ami-83cd5eb9). Any help with fixing this unexpected root password required problem?

Though I've used it countless times in the past, "yum update --skip-broken" doesn't work anymore... it doesn't skip over updates which have dependency problems. Is this a known issue? Is there a work-around for it? Has anyone else experienced this? tnx.

update from local repo mirror

so this may be an odd question, but my google fu seems to be failing me. I've created a local mirror of centos 5 & 6 with various instructions across the net, it seems to be functional, syncs on a regular basis,and is generally usable (I've built machines with kickstart/netboot from it and they seem generally workable). my difficulty comes up when I try to use the local mirror for system updates. if I use the originally installed repo configs and run yum check-update, I get a list of 10-15 RPMs for updates, if I change the repo files, do a yum clean all, comment out mirrorlist and uncommenting/chang baseurl= http://localmirror/path/to/repo and run a check, I get nothing. if I look in localmirror:/path/to/repo and do a find for the version numbers I got as available updates from the remote repositories, I find appropriate files in seemingly reasonably named directory paths. my current best guess is that my repodata/repomd.xml file needs some sort of update/rebuild via the createrepo script, but I can't seem to find the 'right' way to this. does anyone have any pointers? thanks. -- Even the Magic 8 ball has an opinion on email clients: Outlook not so good.

read-only file system when trying to save files

I have installed emacs with yum and now I'm trying to create a .emacs file and put some commands in it, but I can't type anything in the emacs buffer. It says the buffer is read-only. I exited emacs and did touch .emacs and I get a message that it can't do that on a read-only file system. I googled around to see why this might be, but I can't see any links on this. Any tips why this might be doing this? I've heard that centos is strict on changes, but I don't know the extent it restricts changes. I followed a page where I did echo 0 >/selinux/enforce . But this is only good until reboot. But shouldn't I be now able to make changes in ~* Thanks, -wes

6.4 : How to enable epel and the rpmfusions??

I've installed 6.4 on an old T30 ThinkPad, and I'm in the midst of setting it up. I can't seem to get an rpm of Pan for it, nor even to do yum update. Mousing around fedoraproject eventually got me to http:// rpmfusion.org/Configuration/ and from there to downloads for the free, nonfree, and epel packages (along with a caveat that tells you -- *after* you've gotten rpmfusion -- to get epel first :-{ ). The display on the T30 has given trouble recently; while it's working, I tried with packagekit to eliminate the fusions while keeping epel (actually,EPEL; it seems to matter). Packagekit told me that I had to remove the repository configurations along with the fusions -- a thing I'd've done before if I could, whereupon I'd've started over, with EPEL first. I approved that, then tried to refresh my sources in packagekit in order to get the fusions back. This put me through some tedious juggling of non-commutative commands. 3rd party repositories

Can anyone comment on the use of 3rd party repos for newer versions of software like php, python and mysql? Two I am aware of are puias and ius. Is one preferable to the other? Can their packages be installed in parallel to and without interfering with base packages?

Postfix vs Sendmail

I have two CentOS-6.4 servers, in different places. I am running postfix/amavis on one, and sendmail/procmail on the other. I don't recall having any difficulty setting up sendmail many years ago using sendmail.mc . But I found postfix very complicated to setup last year. (It's working fine now.) I recall that when I asked for advice one person advised me to read 2 books on postfix, and another advised me to pay someone to set it up. I asked why postfix was preferable, but didn't any convincing reply. The general response was along the lines that it was the "modern" way. Having looked into postfix/amavis a little further, it seems to me to involve excessively complicated processes (at least for a simple home server) with email going along spaghetti-like routes. How to debug a crash.. Looks like an abrt file.

I have to say the CentOS machines I have used so far seem to work well, so I was surprised the other day when an HP DL580G5 I had running CentOS 6.4 x86_64 the other day for some VM's under KVM/QEMU went belly up. Sadly the sucker was a remote box, so I wasn't just sitting in front of the console, but it looks like it left some files in /var/spool/abrt/oops-2013-11-01-14:00:22-8047-1 on the machine. The kernel on the box says it's 2.6.32-358.23.2.el6.x86_64 I have never used abrt, and looking for a man page on abrt didn't seem to come up with anything revealing that was useful. Needless to say having a box got down hard isn't really a good thing, so I am wondering if has any pointers or suggestions on how I can figure out what caused this crash, and if there is any way to correct this so it doesn't just keep happening. Bad enough to have a server crash, even worse when it takes along a bunch of working VM's with it.. --- Howard Leadmon

Folks, I found free-nx in the repositories and tried to install/use it I could not figure out how to get it working. I tried following directions on the wiki But I still could not get it working Feel free to contact me at stephen.bovy(a)teradata.com I am currenly using the official ns server on sles 11 sp3 Is their any direction on how to install free nx on sles ??

starting/stopping services

In an earlier thread it was mentioned I could use postfix stop to stop postfix. I'm trying to get sshd started and starting on boot. I did chkconfig sshd on and that worked fine, but then tried sshd start, but that didn't work. It looks like I need to do service sshd start (I did just that and it is now started). zimbra test

I wanted to test zimbra on centos 6 (I'm new to centos). While installing zimbra it said there was a conflict on port 25. So I found out that postfix is the default mta on centos. I then did sudo yum remove postfix and followed the prompts for removing it, but in doing so it removed chrome that I had installed and several other packages that seem to be important. Some of these were cron, some lsb packages, and some others. Why does removing postfix remove these others. cron and the others are dependent on having postfix? Seems odd if they are. Thanks, -wes

Hello -- We are running CentOS 6.3 64-bit distribution on one of our servers, and I am involved in upgrading the Apache and OpenSSL packages. I completed an upgrade to both where the version of each that is installed on the server is the following: httpd 2.2.15-29.el6.centos httpd-manual 2.2.15-29.el6.centos httpd-tools 2.2.15-29.el6.centos openssl 1.0.0-27.el6_4.2 openssl-devel 1.0.0-27.el6_4.2 Are these the latest versions of Apache and OpenSSL that are available to CentOS in package format? Hello list, I am using puppet 2.7.20 from rpmforge, with a build date of Wed 20 Mar 2013. EPEL has an even older version. Then I see this: http://puppetlabs.com/security/cve/cve-2013-3567 that was posted on the month of July 2013. Do I understand correctly, that my puppet-master is vulnerable to remote code execution by every node that has access to master's port tcp/8140? If so, then the only option to use puppet while being safe is to use puppetlabs repo, or build puppet myself? Thank you Ignas

htdocs on NFS share / any pitfalls?

Hi all, i have a new setup where the htdocs directory for the webserver is located on a nfs share. Client has cachefilesd configured. Compared to the old setup (htdocs directory is on the local disk) the performance is not so gratifying. The disk is "faster" compared to the ethernet link but the cache should at least compensate this a bit. Do they exist more pitfalls for such configurations? CentOS-6 would work just as well. Installing it with yum couldn't be simpler, but configuring it takes a bit of reading and experimentation. I reserved a bit more than 1GByte of RAM for each TByte of disk. One machine (20 useable TBytes in raid-z3) is the SMB server for all of the clients, and the other machine (identically configured) sits in the background acting as a hot spare. Users tell me that performance is quite good. After about 2 months of testing, there have been no problems whatsoever, although I'll admit the servers do not operate under much stress. There is a cron job on each machine that does a scrub every Sunday. The old ext4 primary file servers have been shut down and the ZFS boxes put into production, although one of the old ext4 servers will remain rsync'd to the new machines for a few more months (just in case). The new servers have the zfsonlinux repositories configured for manual updates, but the two machines tend to be left alone unless there are important security updates or new features I need. To keep the two servers in sync I use 'lsyncd' which is essentially a front-end for rsync that cuts down thrashing and overhead dramatically by excluding the full filesystem scan and using inotify to figure out what to sync. This allows almost-real-time syncing of the backup machine. (BTW, you need to crank the resources for inotify waaaaay up for large filesystems with a couple million files.) So far, so good. I still have a *lot* to learn about ZFS and its feature set, but for now it's doing the job very nicely. I don't miss the long ext4 periodic fsck's one bit :-) YMMV, of course, Chuck

yum fails in FIPS mode

I guess my Google-fu wasn't up to this one! I have a system running CentOS 5.9 32-bit running in FIPS mode that I would like to update. Unfortunately, it fails when attempting to run "yum update". I've disabled all the repositories except for base and updates and still get the same issue, an error carping about an algorithm forbidden by FIPS. Grasping at other straws, I checked the system time, which is correct (using NTP anyway). Anybody got any ideas about how to work around this? I would really rather NOT reboot in non-FIPS mode to update the system, then reboot in FIPS mode, but if that's the only solution that's what I'll do. Ddclient: is this a problem?

I'm running ddclient on a remote CentOS server (with dynamic IP address). About twice a day I get email from ddclient saying "TIMEOUT: checkip.dyndns.org after 120 seconds". As far as I can see, ddclient checks the IP address every 10 minutes. So can I assume that ddclient got the address the next time it tried? I looked at the Perl source, but couldn't really disentangle it. Ps: I'm one of those getting free dyndns service provided I login every month. I upgraded a web server from CentOS 5.9 to 5.10. The instructions also indicate that MySQL 5.0 is no longer supported so I followed the instructions to upgrade to 5.5. Everything seems to be working so I tried to remove MySQL 5.0 and MySQL 5.1. XFS, inode64, and remount

Hi all, I was recently poking more into the inode64 mount option for XFS filesystems. I seem to recall a comment that you could remount a filesystem with inode64, but then a colleague ran into issues where he did that but was still out of inodes. So, I did more research, and found this posting to the XFS list: http://oss.sgi.com/archives/xfs/2008-05/msg01409.html So for people checking the CentOS list archives, I hope this comes up in a search. (It was not easy to find the above post!) You must umount and re-mount an XFS filesystem in order to have the inode64 option work properly; a simple mount -o remount,inode64 is not sufficient. NetworkManager substitute??

I'm investigating how to setup KVM so I can run VMs without having to use VirtualBox or VMware, or etc. All the HOWTOs I see tell you to disable NM. I use NM to manage VPN clients that I use for remote access to my office, among other places. How would I manage those VPN clients if I didn't use NM? Does elrepo fix google-chrome requirement for newer glib and GTK

Has anyone tested installing the newer kernels from elrepo (or somewhere else) in order to keep google-chrome updated beyond version 27? Actually, i assumed a newer kernel would come with a newer glibc but i do not see a newer glibc via elrepo, just newer kernels. hmmm. # yum --disablerepo=* --enablerepo=elrepo* info glibc | grep -i repo only lists my already installed glibc packages from updates. Further, google-chrome requires gtk2 version 2.24.0 or above, and i do not see that in any alternate repos either. But that is another question because #rpm -qi gtk2-2.18.9 finds the package, but #yum clean all #yum --enablerepo=* search all gtk2-2.18.9 says "No Matches found" So clearly something is messed up if yum can not find one its own packages it itself installed, so i cannot trust it to find gtk2-2.24. For those that do not use google-chrome-stable, each time it is newly started, the following message appears close to the top of the window: "Google Chrome has stopped updating and no longer supports this version of your operating system." Hello, Every 15 minutes I get an error on NFSv4 server: rpc.idmapd[1889]: nss_getpwnam: name '0' does not map into domain 'aaa.test.home' I have fully updated Centos 6.4 machine. All shares seems to be ok. Does anybody know, what does this error mean? Thank You. -- mv

Installing OpenOffice401 on CentOS6

Up until this morning I have been running multiple versions of Libre and Open Office on my x86_64 CentOS desktop including the most recent. I decided, foolishly, to remove the oldest versions. Now I cannot get anything other than the LO version from base (3.4.5) to run. And, reinstalling all the older versions do not alter this condition. What I am seeing is this: # openoffice4 no suitable windowing system found, exiting. SELinux is often cited as the cause of this problem for OOo but the system is set to permissive and in any case nothing respecting OOo shows up when I run audit2why. # getenforce Permissive I found a site that gives instructions for installing OOo 4.0.1 on CentOS-6.4 but even after following those instructions literally step by step I still get the "no suitable windowing system found" error. I have a new install of CentOS 6.4 on an HP Pavilion 500-27c with one mother board nic card. results of lspci : 01:00.0 Ethernet controller: Atheros Communications Inc. AR8161 Gigabit Ethernet (rev 10) 04:00.0 Network controller: Ralink corp. Device 539b results of ifconfig -a lo Link encap:Local Loopback wlan0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 70:18:8B:80:AE:71 There is no /etc/sysconfig/network file present. The install was performed without incident from a DVD. I would surely appreciate your help in trying to activate this network. Hi, I am trying to install a LAMP stack using MariaDB on CentOS 6.4, 64 bit. I have installed MariaDB by using the MariaDB repository configuraton tool. I installed php by itself. Both MariaDB and php individually test fine. I know that php-mysql has to be installed to complete the LAMP stack installation. From lots of googling I understand that there is a php-mysql and a php-mysqlnd. If I do: # yum list | grep -i php-mysql I only get php-mysql, not php-mysqlnd, even though the MariaDB repository is active. Will php-mysql work or should I try to find mysqlnd?
