which kernel do people use?

Hi all, I'm doing a very informal and unscientific poll: which kernel do you use on your CentOS machines? Not which version of the CentOS kernel, but which repository. Here are some examples I can think of off the top of my head: ==CentOS stock ==build own from CentOS SRPMs ==kernel-ml (from ELRepo) ==kernel-lt (from ELRepo) ==OpenVZ kernel ==build own from kernel.org ==other? One reason I'm curious is that on occasion there are features that I would like to have from a newer kernel (e.g., --want-replacement from md) that (AFAICT) are not in the stock CentOS kernel. I've been using kernel-ml for these but am curious what other folks do in these situations, or whether people default to a different kernel for whatever reason. (And as an aside, who remembers when moving even from, say, a 1.2 to a 1.4 kernel, was an enormous amount of effort? I'm so old. Now anybody can go from a 2.6 to a 3.11 kernel in less than ten minutes!) --keith -- kkeller(a)wombat.san-francisco.ca.us

Varnish-ban-manager + vhosts

Hi guys. 've installed varnish-ban-manager ( https://github.com/dot2code/varnish-bans-manager) and I'm currently configuring it's DNS name. The thing is that I've set in Route53 (DNS service in AWS) to use name http:// purge.domain.com / pointing to http:// varnish_server_name.com/. The thing is, if I test with http :// purge.domain .com:9000/ it works normally, but using http: // purge.domain.com/ will send me a "your request cannot be processed" (in a varnish error screen). Any ideas why this could be happening? I've test this with the ip address of this vm and works perfectly too.. Here's the vhost config file: <VirtualHost *:80> ServerName purge.domain.com ServerAlias purge.domain.com ProxyPass / http://varnish_server.domain:9200/ ProxyPassReverse / http://purge.domain.com/ # Logging ErrorLog logs/server-error_log CustomLog logs/server-access_log combined </VirtualHost> Note: i've replaced my real domain for "domain" just in case. <ctrl+r> forms line breaks and quotes when composing replies

for users of thunderbird, up to 17.0.9 anyway, when you compose a reply to post that has long lines, over 72 characters, pressing <ctrl+r> will form line breaks and quotes in reply. that is if you have; edit > preferences > advanced > general > config editor search: wraplength mailnews.wraplength default integer 72 doing such makes for easier reading of post as it makes post more clear as to where quotes end and replies begin. thank you. -- peace out. in a world with out fences, who needs gates. tc.hago. g .

A last, desperate hope - video modes

Hi, folks. This is, in fact, off-topic: I'm fighting a user's FC19 box. I updated him, rebooted... and his ATI video card seems to not be supported any more (and it's *not* that old - an RV620). The thing that drives me crazy is, when I reinstalled the whole system, whatever video driver the installer used for graphical install *worked*. So: does anyone have any idea a) what driver that uses, and b) how to force grub2 to use it (or do I also need to do this to the initrd)? mark -- grub2 must DIE!

problem in installation

as i was trying to install in my laptop , it was stuck will an problem, the graphics was not seen on the display, means display goes black, when i look into display closely negative images were seen, thought might be a problem in dispaly drivers , but other OS are installed properlly and working good, except centos.kindly give me a solution. am using a DELL Inspiron 14 inch pc with 2 gb ram, core i3 processor haing windows 7 and ubuntu on my pc -- Regards sam suresh.J

CentOS 6 kernel > 2.6.32-279 won't boot on ABIT AB9

I was trying to install CentOS 6.4 a workstation with an Abit AB9 motherboard on a machine that had been running 5.9 Installation completed, but upon boot, it hangs hard after acpiphp: ACPI Hot Plug PCI Controller Driver version 0.5 ipmi message handler version 39.2 … then 3 attempts to locate an ipmi interface at different addresses ... Refined TSC clocksource calibration: 2175.999 MHz switching to clocksource TSC Googling a bit, finds a few references to similar issues on gentoo and at lkml. There was a suggestion to boot with clocksource=acpi_pm but for me that hangs at the same location (minus the switching clock source message) I have updated the motherboard BIOS to latest. I had used the the 6.3 net installer disk (and the 6.4 repo) which I noticed had kernel 2.6.32-279, so I retrieved that kernel from the vault and it works. The 279 and earlier kernels don't display any ipmi messages during boot (in dmesg) The system is not ipmi capable I don't believe, should I be looking there? Regards Tony Schreiner

anyone running both GTK 2 and 3 ?

I really love Centos. I loaded Ubuntu last night on another drive and booted from that because I want to develop an application to run on a tablet and GTK 3 seems like a better route for a touch screen device. However I really hated Ubuntu and I was so happy to get back to Centos on my first drive. I want to use GTK 2.0 / Gnome 2 for my daily desktop. I would however like to develop using GTK 3 for the tablet application. I thought I would ask if anyone has loaded both GTK 2 and 3 on their Centos machine before I hose mine :) Any advice on how to do this? -Patrick

ddclient stops running

I find ddclient stops running after a time on a remote CentOS-6.4 server. Has anyone else found this? I think it has been happening for a couple of months. baby blue screen of permanent death

I clicked on a window to try to raise it and get a good look. Instead, my screen turned the baby blue mentioned in the subject and I could do nothing else. The mouse cursor was not even visible. It's possible an alternate terminal was available, but I didn't think of it at the time. Eventually I hit the reset button. My Daktech machine has a reset button separate from the power button. The blue went away, but it hung after the CentOS logo appeared. The watch mouse cursor appeared and stayed. I could move it with the mouse, but that was all I could do on that terminal. The possilbility that it might have some major file system checking to do caused me to wait for a few hours, but the nothing changed. It's my expectation that when the logo appears, any file system checking has already been done. Is that correct? What is the incantation to get a text view of the start up so that I can get a hint of what CentOS is waiting for? I manged to boot an old Fedora 14 install, but could not login because I had forgotten the passwords. I'm doing this from Knoppix. Should I upgrade Samba 3.6 to Samba 4.1

Hi, I just installed Samba on my Centos 6.4 computer. Smbstatus says my version is 3.6.9-151.el6-4.1. My smb.conf file only has a [global] and [homes] section. My configuration works, as expected, from a Win7 Virtual Box computer and a Win8 Virtual Box computer. I can see the share from the Windows file explorer and can map the share to a network drive. The Samba server is not virtual. The problem is my wife's Win7 laptop which is running some sort of home edition of Win7. I did everything I could in control panel to enable file sharing but I still can't see the Samba share. I can ping the computer running Samba? I tried to launch "gpedit.msc" but this program was not there. Do you think it would work if I upgraded Samba to the latest version 4.1? Should I consider upgrading to Win7 professional? HP proliant bl460c G7 on CentOS

Hi list, I have installed CentOS on an hp proliant blade server, bl 460c g7, after installing I've seen that network is not working properly. It recognises around 8 interfaces (?), mii-tool says that there is not any link present on those, and there's only 2 NIC' per bay. I've searched on Hp support page but there's only one driver for storage. Does anybody has had the same trouble with this model? They are new servers, firmware (of blade) is updated. An HP guy said that there wasn't problems by installing Redhat, in contrast with CentOS HP brings every single driver (maybe I could use it). The output of lspci lspci | grep Eth .... Ethernet Controller: Emulex corporation One connect 10GB NIC (be3) (rev01) I have installed the kit that Emulex brings for CentOS from its webpage, but, again, I don't know why it shows 8 interfaces when there are only 2 NICs and 2 iscsi for HBA. In our development lab, I am installing 4 new servers, that I want to use for hosting KVM. each server will have its own direct attached raid. I'd love to be able to 'pool' this storage, but over gigE, I probably shouldn't even try. most of the VM's will be running CentOS 5 and 6, some of the VM's will be postgresql database dev/test servers, others will be running java messaging workloads, and various test jobs. to date, my experience with KVM is bringing up one c6 VM on a c6 host, manually w/ virt-install and virsh... stupid questions ... whats the best storage setup for KVM when using direct attached raid? surely using disk image files on a parent ext4/xfs file system isn't the best performance? Should I use host lvm logical volumes as guest vdisks? we're going to be running various database servers in dev/test and wanting at least one or another at a time to really be able to get some serious iops. its virt-manager worth using, or is it too simplistic/incomplete ? will virt-manager or some other tool 'unify' management of these 4 VM hosts, or will it be pretty much, me-the-admin keeps track of what vm is on what host and runs the right virt-manager and manages it all fairly manually? hi, I have a dedicated server with several services running: ssh, ftp, httpd (with several sites andactive domains), the mail server (dovecot, postfix), dns. I'd like to monitor all of these services in a graphical, easy, setting of thresholds and alerts via email. I would also like that if a customer wanted to see the graphs I could create codes read-only. there is one or more software that are right for me? what advice can you give me? thanks in advance greetings

Thinkpad T30

I have an IBM-refurbished T30, which has handled Fedora well, up through F18. But it never took to F19. I'm in process of trying to downgrade, but that seems to be a monumental job. I have other computers, including a T43 and a System76 tablet; the T30's chief virtue is that it has a serial port. My GPSs and proprietary software still use the serial port, and none of the various USB adapters I've tried have done any good. But, way back when, I mapped a lot of hunting spots and game trails. I want to keep that data. Has anyone run CentOS 6.4 on a T30? How about Wine a/o virtualization? IOMMU error at boot time

Hi all! I've just recently noticed these lines in the dmesg output: Please enable the IOMMU option in the BIOS setup This costs you 64 MB of RAM they may have been there forever, but I never noticed them before. This system is an AMD Phenom-II X2 CPU on a Gigabyte MA770-UD3 motherboard. I have no idea which BIOS option I need to change to solve this, I see nothing in the setup that refers to IOMMU. Firewall/Gateway Hardware Question

I've given up on getting the other machine to work so I'm looking at building a new one. The machine will be a firewall/gateway running NAT, Web Proxy with Dansguardian, DHCP, DNS, NTP and VPN (~6 clients). I read so much about VPN encryption and the processor needs, now I am unsure if this will work. I can get this for AMD FX-8120 Zambezi 3.1GHz Socket AM3+ 125W Eight-Core Desktop Processor for under $120 (it's on sale), would it work ? Any thoughts? Thanks, Terre

Hello, I have set up IPA on a private network and have hit some bumps configuring sudo access for the clients. kinit seems to work fine for both client and server, user and root. New Install for 6to4 tunnel

Folks It appears that Comcast is using 6to4 tunnelling on all new installs in Washington and Oregon. I am trying to install Centos 6 (latest), and nothing I do seems to work. My method is as follows: The Comcast modem is directly connected to the box. Insert the NetInstall disk and bootstrap. Select the URL method of install, and enable both IPV4 and IPV6. I know that if I enable IPV4 only, it fails. Network manager never manages to initialize the network. --------------- As a sanity test, I took a functioning Windows 7 laptop, plugged it into the Comcast Modem, and the connection came up and worked. I had both an IPV4 address (globally routable, likely dynamic) and an IPV6 address. I know therefore that the modem, and cable all work. --------------- Is Linux installable on such a network? It installs elegantly and effortlessly in an IPV4 environment. It appears that there will be a growing number of 6to4 tunnel environments as the world slowly moves to an IPV6-only protocol. Overheating on laptop as compared to RHEL

Hi, I have an acer 5738g laptop on which i tried out the centos6.4 live CD. The laptop feels noticable hotter and i check the temperature using something like cat /proc/acpi/thermal_zone/. The temperatures are around 57-60 degrees when the laptop is just idling, ie, just the desktop and the terminal window open. I install lm_sensors using yum and it installs successfully, but there is no noticable reduction in temperature. I have faced this same problem using different varities of gnu/linux distributions: slackware, lubuntu, mandriva and now centos. By a freak chance, i had a chance to run RHEL 5.4 and to my great surprise, the temperature at idling was 43, similar to Windows(which came as default). In fact, the temperature control by rhel was what made me think of trying centos. I tried the lm_sensors configuration on rhel and it was not even able to load the correct modules, yet the temperature control was better. Now, i am not sure if lmsensors are for detecting temperatures only but also for cotrolling temperature. I am also aware that this particular model is notorious for heating problems, and there are suggestions for cutting case for better air flow. However, i do not want to try this solution, but the temperature control by rhel gave me some hope! Posibly i am wrong. If anyone has a suggestion, or needs more information, pl. let me know. Thanks! hung nfs mount

What is the best approach when an nfs mount hangs on a client but the server is OK? I have mount options of: rw,bg,soft,intr,rsize=32768,wsize=32768 but whatever it did was not interruptable and would not shut down. There were some: Oct 15 09:08:32 dev-ngf-l-01 kernel: INFO: task gnome-settings-:19169 blocked for more than 120 seconds. Oct 15 09:08:32 dev-ngf-l-01 kernel: "echo 0 > /proc/sys/kernel/hung_task_timeout_secs" disables this message. messages on the console and /var/log/messages. xorg updates hose GUI with Nvidia driver

Just a heads up that once again an xorg update has removed the link in /usr/lib64/xorg/modules/extensions that points to libglx.so.325.15 in /usr/lib64/xorg/modules/extensions/nvidia thus breaking X. This should only effect those with nvidia proprietary driver. One of the following packages is the culprit but I have not tried to narrow it down. I have done updates and downgrades several times and it is quite reproducible. Hello list, I have two drives - the first drive currently has F14 on it. The second drive is empty. If I select custom partition and only partititon and format the second drive, will CentOS install on the second and not touch the first drive? This is using the installer from the CentOS 6.4 Live DVD. Everyone, I am working on a Centos 5.9 system. I have an need to be able to activate a piece of software from /etc/smrsh that is activated when sendmail delivers the e-mail to this piece of software. I would like this piece of software to take on the user and group identities that are different than 'mail' which is what happens now. I want to use a user and group that is not root), so that the piece of software will be able to write (concatenate) to a file. I have never used setuid, but it appears that this will only allow a piece of software to be set to root. I really do not want to give that kind of privilege to this piece of software. I'm trying to install centos 6.4 on my server A (which has 512 MB ram and no cdrom) by PXE. I exported installation tree 'CentOS-6.4-i386-bin-DVD1.iso' via http on server 'Z', all according to Centos howto (copied vmlinuz, pxelinux.cfg, initrd.img , started tftpd+dhcpd services) Boot process is OK (in text mode! I think it's a memory problem); it's required keyboard type, time zone, network parameters, disk partitions, ... but no installation type is required (basic, minimal, server, ...) and no packages selection ! Installation goes on installing the packages but without choosing them! I'd like to choose type of installation and the details of packages, any options as I used directly installation dvdrom1. I don't want to use kickstart file ! yum checksum for updates fails

Form Feed on RAW printer

Hi all. On CentOS 4 I was able to set a text only printer and send raw data and form feed on the end. Now on CentOS 5/6 I only have the option to set it RAW or text only but not the previous mix. Hey all, I have just compiled the 3.11.5 kernel from kernel.org to fix the ACPI wont shutdown issue, but I have a couple errors in dmesg I am trying to figure out. Can anyone point me in the right direction? The errors are: 1: dm_mod: module verification failed: signature and/or required key missing - tainting kernel 2: [drm] VGACON disable radeon kernel modesetting. [drm:radeon_init] *ERROR* No UMS support in radeon module!

I'm trying to set up a VNC server using the instructions at http://www.techrepublic.com/blog/linux-and-open-source/linux-101-easy-vnc-s… . I am up to step 6: Step 6: Edit iptables In order for the VNC connections to get through, you must allow them with iptables. To do this, open up the file /etc/sysconfig/iptables and add the line: -A INPUT -m state --state NEW -m tcp -p tcp -m multiport --dports 5901:5903,6001:6003 -j ACCEPT Save the file and restart iptables with the command: service iptables restart When I issue the restart command I get: iptables: Applying firewall rules: iptables-restore: line 1 failed [FAILED] Note that I did not have an iptables file before but there is an iptables-config file. SSH login from user with empty password

Hello list, on a CentOS 6.4 machine I'm creating accounts with empty passwords. Each user's public key is located in <user's home>/.ssh/authorized_keys. When trying to ssh into that machine, following error message is displayed: Permission denied (publickey). In /etc/ssh/sshd_config I've set: PasswordAuthentication no UsePAM no If I set a password for the users, the public key auth works without any problems. Could anyone tell me what I'm missing here? CentOS 6.4: sound not working

Good morning, I've got a new system with a fresh 6.4 installation. I didn't check if the sound worked at first but I know it doesn't now. :) The system board is an ASRock Extreme6. The Specs say it has a Realtek ALC1150 audio chipset and 7.1 channels. I'm running KDE and an Nvidia X driver (I need the video performance of this driver - sorry about that). The System Tools for Audio Output list 4 devices: HDA Intel (HDA Generic) Default PulseAudio HDA NVidia (HDMI 0) The speakers are connected via the typical audio jack and when I test "HDA Intel (HDA General)" it says that the default device did not work and it is using the PulseAudio device. I tested all 4 devices and nothing ever played. I've also made sure I have the audio jack plugged into the right port on the board :) I Googled a bit and one site suggested reinstalling the alsa kernel module, which I did. No change - still no sound. Any suggestions? Thanks! Jeff

Sound Volume Setting At Login

Hey all, When I log on my sound level is set at about 35%. I have to use the sound preferences to turn the sound level up every time I log in. Other users on this same system do not have this issue. When they log in their volume is set at 100%. This leads me to believe that there must be something in my local settings that is turning down my sound volume settings. Need to test a monitor attached to a running server, so I'm looking for an application/utility to display a large color graphic. This must be possible to do without X because a splash screen comes up when this system boots. The best graphic to display obviously would be some kind of fullscreen test pattern. Anyone know where to get that? tia, ken

Hello, I'm looking for help figuring out why I am having problems with shutting down a machine. I have tested the machine using Fedora 19 and Ubuntu 12 Live CD's and both power down without issues. cleaning up some LVM stuff

Odd useradd/LDAP behaviour

Hello list, On our CentOS 6.4 machines I've LDAP enabled such that Windows users with the requisite unix attributes can log into the machines. These remote windows users have UID/GID starting at 20000 so are well out of the way of local users. If I now create a local user with useradd, the UID/GID of the local user is the next available number in the range used by the Windows users. This is, users created before setting up LDAP are UID 501, 502 etc, but new users are 200XX. This then potentially causes problems when a new LDAP user is added, as we then have two users with the same UID/GID values. I've resolved this by editing the UID_MAX and GID_MAX fields in /etc/login.defs so the value is below the range used by the windows users. New test user gets UID/GID 503 as expected. I guess specifying the values in the useradd command would also work. So why is LDAP making useradd use the wrong values? Thanks for any suggestions, Paul

CentOS6.4 and Apple keyboard

I have just installed (with kikstart) centOS6.4 on a PC which was previously running OpenSUSE (11.x). This PC has an apple keyboard and I'm unable to setup this keyboard. Port knocking and DNAT rules

So I found an excellent port knocking tutorial using ONLY iptables rules that looks to be among the best I've ever seen. (warning: techno music, tough to read screen, you don't need to type it in because I post a link to script below) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0zFQocf7C_0 It works fabulously for simply opening a port to a locally managed service, but I can't seem to get it to work for a PREROUTING/DNAT rule. I've posted the shell script I'm trying to get to work, it should be self-documented. http://chico.benjamindsmith.com/iptables.txt I've confirmed that the logs correctly show port knocking 2, 3, and 4 in /var/log/messages so everything seems to be working golden all the way up to the last line. There are no errors reported when I run this script. The result that I get is that it acts as though packets are being dropped for 15 seconds, then I get connection refused. What am I doing wrong?

sssd - ldap uid/gid does not match with uid/gids in the openLDAP DS

CentOS 6.4 (amd64) client desktop with SSSD installed+configured to do LDAP AUTH from an openLDAP DS. Groups in LDAP DS -- dsusers (for all users), project1, project2, .... The objective is to give group permissions to directory trees with users belonging to various groups; users thereby inheriting the ACL given to respective groups. Test case -- uid: jdoe, gid: dsusers (primary) On LDAP client workstation - id jdoe shows uid+gid as above. Then I add uid jdoe to the 'project1' group in the openLDAP DS. On the client workstation - id jdoe shows member of 'dsusers' only. Thinking it could be due to local cache, I have deleted the files in /var/lib/sss/db/ and still id jdoe reports member of dsusers only. I have also waited > 5 mins. expecting the client side cache to be updated but still the same issue. jdoe does not show up as member of project1. In order for jdoe to show up as member of 'project1' group, I have to restart sssd. In sssd.conf, in the domain section enumerate=FALSE. [CEntOS] - problem with iptables

hi all, I have a problem with iptables on CentOS 6.2. I configured: chkconfig iptables on and the file /etc/sysconfig/iptables if you reboot the machine configurations are not loaded. iptables-L gives me the default configurations (not assigned) if I (a machine booted): service iptables start then then it works. how can I fix? thanks in advance

Wireless connection issue - athero 9300 pci wireless card

Hi all, I am new to CentOS. I built myself a desktop with an additional PCI wireless card 'TP-LInk WPN3800', which I have checked needs an ath9k driver. * **04:00.0 Network controller: Atheros Communications Inc. AR9300 Wireless LAN adaptor* Following the wireless connection tutorial on CentOS wiki, I have both kernel-devel 2.6.6 and ath9k installed. Then I tried * $ modprobe ath9k *but nothing happened. Then I input *$ service NetworkManager start $ chkconfig NetworkManager on *to access the Network Manager and no wireless connection options appear. I do not think it is a big problem for you guys, but I am really a beginner. Please share me some solutions for that. Thank you!

mdraid strange surprises...

Hey, I installed 2 new data servers with a big (12TB) RAID6 mdraid. I formated the whole arrays with bad blocks checks. One server is moderately used (nfs on one md), while the other not. One week later, after the raid-check from cron, I get on both servers a few block_mismatch... 1976162368 on the used one and a tiny bit less on the other... That seems a tiny little bit high... I do the whole repair+recheck and it is back to zero. For brand new arrays, I am not very happy about the way mdraid seems to function (with the manual/croned checks, repairs, checks, checks, repairs, checks...) I will have to see next week how high the mismatches reach... Since my desktop is a RAID1 mdraid on 2 disks, I decided to have a look for fun... Apart from some low count mismatches, I did not have many problems... XFS quotas not working at all (seemingly)

Hi All, I have a very strange problem that I'm unable to pinpoint at the moment. For some reason I am simply unable to get xfs_quotas to report correctly on a freshly installed, fully patched CentOS 6 box. I have specified all the same options as on another machine which *is* reporting quota LABEL=TEST /exports/TEST xfs inode64,nobarrier,delaylog,usrquota,grpquota 0 0 xfs_quota -xc 'limit -u bsoft=900m bhard=1g user' /exports/TEST however xfs_quota -xc 'report -hu' /exports/ reports back nothing pertaining to the user but if a do a quota user I get information back Disk quotas for user user (uid 67876): Filesystem blocks quota limit grace files quota limit grace /dev/mapper/DATA-TEST 0 921600 1048576 1 0 0 This is very strange and it's something new. Can anyone confirm similar findings on their machines before I consider reporting a bug? -- James A. Best configuration for encrypted software RAID 1?

I'm setting up a computer with CentOS 6.4 and a mirrored software RAID. I would like it to be encrypted so I was wondering what the best configuration is. The only info I could find is http://lists.centos.org/pipermail/centos-docs/2008-October/001912.html but it appears to be a bit old and the info on the wiki ( http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/EncryptTmpSwapHome ) doesn't seem to address RAIDs. My main question is will it be better to encrypt the RAID itself or the two partitions used by the RAID? Any other things I should be aware of? Thanks, Dave

Sendmail not presenting AUTH option after EHLO

Hello folks, I have a CentOS 6.4 installation running Sendmail, and after some serious hair tear stare and compare I'm a bit stumped. When I connect to the server either with telnet or SSL, sendmail is not presenting the AUTH capability after an EHLO. Everything looks like it should be working, but no amount of tweaking is getting the AUTH capability advertised (and it doesn't work if you just try it anyway). VNCserver not starting due to errors

Hello everyone, Following the directions I found here: http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/VNC-Server I get to part 2.4, and when I start the vncservice, I get this error message: Starting VNC server: 1:blah Invalid null command. if: Expression Syntax. A VNC server is already running as :1 else: endif not found. [FAILED] If I stop it, and then restart it, I get the same error message. "blah" has been changed for security purposes on this email, but the real name is a valid user. I want to be on window "0", not 1. Any tips or suggestions would be greatly appreciated! "Enterprise Class Hard Drive" - Scam Warning

Hi All, I know many of us here manage RAID on our Centos based servers so this may be of interest to us all. I ordered three new "Enterprise hard drives" this month from a well known UK online retailer. The drives arrived as new in their anti-static packaging. Before using one of the drives in a mission critical hardware raid I checked the SMART attributes and was amazed at what I saw; see a few of the attributes listed below 1 Raw_Read_Error_Rate 0x002f 200 200 051 Pre-fail - 2600 9 Power_On_Hours 0x0032 098 097 000 Old_age - 2106 12 Power_Cycle_Count 0x0032 100 100 000 Old_age - 80 198 Offline_Uncorrectable 0x0030 196 196 000 Old_age - 398 200 Multi_Zone_Error_Rate 0x0008 180 180 000 Old_age - 4077 So for a brand new packaged drive this was a bit of a surprise. "2106" power on hours, obviously should be zero for a new drive and "398" "Offline_Uncorrectable sectors" this is a well used and faulty drive. I contacted the (very well known) manufacturer of the drive and asked for information on the serial number. I was told the serial number of the drive was region specific to the USA and should not even be in the UK. I opened and tested the second and third drives with similar results. I was told two of the drives had already been returned under warranty and replaced with new drives. Wow... I was also told by the online retailer this is known as a grey import and is not that uncommon.. So it may be a good policy to check the SMART attributes of drives before deployment! Cheers, Steve

boot fails with dracut warning

greetings, had problems burning a dvd for 6.4, so i burned a livecd and installed it from boot menu to ext4 /dev/sdb3. during install, i defined mounting of /dev/sdb5 as /home and a second partition /dev/sdb6. both are ext4. first boot went well, set up user, rebooted. rebooted level 5, logged in as user, all looked good. rebooted level 5, logged in as root, made changes to /boot/grub/grub.conf to boot other os. rebooted level 5, logged in as user, opened terminal, su to root, tried to 'yum update', all mirrors failed. did not think of trying pings to see if was connected to internet. which could have explained failure. my bad. exited from root, closed terminal, rebooted to other os, logged in as user, opened terminal, pinged several sites, pings returned ok. closed terminal, rebooted, to centos, crashed during level 5 boot. shutdown system, rebooted level 3, boot crashed again. error message; =+=+= ACPI: wmi: Mapper loaded dracut Warning: No root device "block: /dev/disk/by=uuid/dbb9f9c4-8f67- \ 4d79-aaef-4f804f31c800" found dracut Warning: Boot has failed. C6: kickstart problems with additional repo

Hi, I'm kickstarting a vm in ESXi 5.1. ks.cfg is on floppy, install media is ISO file. This works great as long as I don't add an additional repo, in our case it is vmware tools on one of our webservers. If I add the repo line, anaconda asks then for the used network card and indeed, switching to console the interfaces are still unconfigured. Chosing eth0 in gui continues the installation! This is the relevant part of ks.cfg install cdrom lang de_DE.UTF-8 keyboard de-latin1 skipx network --onboot yes --device eth0 --bootproto static --ip=192.168.200.28 --netmask=255.255.255.0 --gateway=192.168.200.1 --nameserver=192.168.200.9 --noipv6 network --onboot no --device eth1 --bootproto static --noipv6 network --onboot no --device eth2 --bootproto static --noipv6 repo --name=vmware51 --baseurl=http://xxx/repo/vmware/5.1/rhel6Server-x86_64/ I'm beginning to think the problem is, my install media is ISO and I have an additional http repo which is not available in this stage... Hey guys, I'm trying to write a simple bash script that will cp a configuration file to a backup (with the date) remotely to a bunch of machines, using sudo with ssh. Email access via Android device

I'm pretty sure that this is possible, but I don't currently know enough about email to know where to start. My main desktop computer runs Centos 6 and my preferred email client is Sylpheed, which supports both POP and IMAP email, and my "internal network" has a static IP address, so getting access to the computer from the big scary world via my phone isn't a problem. I have six different email accounts that live on various servers. I have Sylpheed set up to poll each account once every ten minutes using POP3 and download all incoming mail. Upon receipt, I have a whole lot of filters in Sylpheed to sort the mail into various subdirectories of my Mail directory. For example, one of my directory structures under Mail is inbox/1/2, and email may be sorted in Mail/inbox or Mail/inbox/1 or Mail/inbox/1/2, or other subdirectories outside of inbox like, for example, Mail/3. In short, I have a dozen or so subdirectories that Sylpheed sorts mail into based on various criteria like From or Subject. What I would like to do is somehow make this whole thing available on my Android phone (Samsung Galaxy 3). As it sits right now, if I am not sitting in front of my computer the only way I can check my email is to ssh into it and look at the files in each of those subdirectories using a text utility like less; this is really inconvenient and I can't reply to emails that way until I get back in front of my computer. I'm thinking that I need to run some kind of a mailserver on my computer that can be accessed by both Sylpheed locally and by ??? on my Android device. I get the impression that if I wanted to hand all of my email over to gmail I could then have something like this working. I don't particularly want to do that; I would rather have something running on my own machine to do it. I could use something else to poll for my email (fetchmail?). Sylpheed does have a configuration setting that I'm not currently using that says "Enable strict checking of summary caches -- enable this if the contents of the folders may be changed by other applications" so based on that I think it can handle having messages magically changed by a program on my Android device. What is the best way to approach this? My best idea so far is to set up fetchmail (or something) to do the pop downloads of incoming mail, and have some kind of a local imap server running though which I access the actual mail via any email client that can work with an imap account. Then I can set up Sylpheed to access only one account, that being the one on my local computer, and run some imap-using mail client on the Android device for remote access. Having never actually used an imap email account in this way, that leads to a couple of other questions. (The only thing I've ever done with imap is set up squirrelmail.) What about filtering the email into those directories? Procmail? And what happens to sent email -- I assume that the SMTP part of the mail client wouldn't actually change -- I would still send outbound mail directly through the mailserver where my email account exists, right? But does it (can it) also send a copy to the imap mail store so I can send email from Android and later on review what I sent with Sylpheed? -- MELVILLE THEATRE ~ Real D 3D Digital Cinema ~ www.melvilletheatre.com

Hello, I have a CENTOS 5 box that can reach the internet and can ping to/from all windows system on my home network. The catch is that I can not connect to the box using SSH from any windows machine, though they can easily ping the linux box and vice-versa. Hi, I am running an up to date centos5.9 system. The package, net-snmp-devel-5.3.2.2-20.el5 Contains among oteher things: /usr/lib/libnetsnmpagent.so When I link with this library (-lnetsnmpagent), I get a bunch of unresolved references.: My Google searches has not given me hints to where the C to Perl library exists. I would guess that yum would have loaded the correct package as a dependency: Could someone point me to the correct library? CentOS Continuous Release Updates are Available for 5.10

The Continuous Release Updates for CentOS-5.10 are released to the CR repo. The anaconda and centos-release packages for 5.10 are not released into the CR (as they may need to change for the installable tree), but all other updates are there. For information on what the CR is, see this link: http://wiki.centos.org/AdditionalResources/Repositories/CR We are now focusing on creating an installable tree and creating the ISOs for CentOS-5.10 .. I would expect that we would have the full 5.10 release (tree and ISOs) in 10-14 days from this announcement. Anyone else getting Sane throwing i/o error after upgrades?

Note in the yum logs that recent upgrades to Sep 23 21:28:49 Updated: hplip-common-3.12.4-4.el6_4.1.x86_64 Sep 23 21:28:50 Updated: hplip-libs-3.12.4-4.el6_4.1.x86_64 Sep 23 21:29:17 Updated: libsane-hpaio-3.12.4-4.el6_4.1.x86_64 appear to have caused this error. scanimage -L reports device `hpaio:/usb/PSC_2200_Series?serial=MY34SF74HN0G' is a Hewlett-Packard PSC_2200_Series all-in-one but xsane reports (xsane:10677): Gtk-WARNING **: GtkSpinButton: setting an adjustment with non-zero page size is deprecated upon startup, however the gui comes up fine, an attempt at scanning gives scanimage: sane_start: Error during device I/O device locks up and needs reset. Anyone else having this issue? I guess only option is to downgrade?? TIA Rob

I am using webtatic on CentOS 5.x. I started using it some years back because as I can remember (vaguely) I had problems using php53 RPMs (can't remember details, however). Thanks for php 5.4 info - I haven't used it yet. I installed remi (php 5.5) on CentOS 6.x but, yes, it seems many apps don't like php 5.5. Hello, During a reposync of the centos base mirror, how come there are more packages downloaded than the iso file contains... The iso's Packages directory contains 3956 rpm packages. The reposync of base holds 6381 rpm packages. You can connect to a samba share without user or password authentication. That's how I have my server setup at my house. SMTP Auth Spam Mail Attack

Hi All I have a server which seems to be getting spam relayed through it. The story is this..... User reported loads of undeliverables being received so I had a trawl through the logs. So the attacker connects to our server using SMTP AUTH........ Oct 5 15:17:53 www sendmail[6972]: AUTH=server, relay=pppoe9.net109-120-27.se1.omkc.ru [109.120.27.9] (may be forged), authid=jon, mech=LOGIN, bits=0 This then seemingly passes the AUTH for the user jon and allows the system to send e-mails such as the following. Oct 5 15:17:58 www sendmail[6982]: r95EHqoc006972: to=<qqueenllouise(a)aol.com>, ctladdr=<jon(a)xxxxxxxx.co.uk> (516/100), delay=00:00:05, xdelay=00:00:02, mailer=esmtp, pri=300552, relay=mailin-03.mx.aol.com. [205.188.156.193], dsn=2.0.0, stat=Sent (2.0.0 Ok: queued as B648F3800008D) Now there seem to be 2 user names that appear in the logs with the authid= one is jon as above and the other is jon(a)xxxxx.co.uk (obviously I have replaced the real domain with xxxxx) Now the interesting thing is that there are only a handful of sites on the server and they are set up so the site has a main username and any other addresses that need to accept mail are set as aliases. So in effect there is only one user per domain with one email account. So despite the main account not being "jon" or "jon(a)xxxxx.co.uk" and there are no users on the domain with those usernames, SMTP auth accepets the user and authenticates correctly to allow the relay through. I have checked the server with an external SMTP checker, and it is not an open relay. I have changed the password on the domain in question and they are still getting in. I have tried changing the password and sending mail with the old password, this gets .. relying denied, so SMTP auth is working ok. I have been through the server and looked at each domain for these users, I did find one called jon on an old domain which I have now deleted, just in case this was accepting the SMTP auth. Has anyone any idea how they can be authenticating against SMTP auth with a username that does not exist on the server ? Any pointers towards next steps appreciated, as I am running out of ideas to try and lock this server down. Cheers Paul. -- There are only 10 types of people in the world..
