Unattended install of CentOS in a VM with given login/password?

Is there a way to make CentOS install unattended, right from the boot until I can SSH into it?. I'd like being able to boot a new Virtualbox virtual machine right from the CentOS ISO, and then from the Virtualbox host, ssh into the brand new VM client and customize it using SSH shell scripts (SU, yum install, etc). Is there any way to tweak the ISO to specify "unattended install" and the root password (to be later changed after VM is installed).? The main idea is turning this into a bash script so I can download whatever new language and to the VM install "automagically". Thanks in advance. Samba problem

Hello, I am trying to learn how to use Samba. I first just want to get it to work, then I'll make it better. I am not concerned about security since everything is on a private network. I am following the material in "CentOS 6 Linux Server Cookbook" by Jonathan Hobson. I am using two virtual computers with Virtual Box running on Fedora 19. Both virtual computers have bridged networking. One virtual computer is Win7, the other is CentOS 6.4. They are both up to date. There is only one user, "admin", on the CentOS virtual computer. The Win7 computer can successfully ping the CentOS computer. My Win7 computer can not see the share on the Samba server. The command "# testparm" shows no errors. Xorg fills up /var/log/Xorg.0.log with AUDIT messages (up to system crash)

Hi, on a CentOS 6.4-workstation we have the problem, that Xorg fills up /var/log/Xorg.0.log with AUDIT messages faster than one can read. Within four hours the logfile grew to 160 MB and usually within 1-2 days applications and sometimes the OS crash because /var becomes full. For sure these messages are associated with "something" the user(s) do, because as soon as nobody is logged in, these messages stop. We have lots of CentOS 6 machines, but this is the only one with such an issue, even though there are more or less the same applications running on all machines. Xorg is running with the following options (CentOS 6 default settings): /usr/bin/Xorg :0 -nr -verbose -audit 4 -auth /var/run/gdm/auth-for-gdm-jQ4DVP/database -nolisten tcp vt1 Questions: * How can one find out which processes are responsible for these audit messages? * How can I stop auditing completely? With CentOS 5 Xorg ran with "audit 0" and I was unable to find the place where the audit level is set. * (more generally) What's auditing good/used for anyway? Any hint is appreciated. About Memory mirroring

Greetings, Was wondering if any software exists for mirroring memory across hosts like what drbd does for disks. I am somewhat aware of copying of a VM's memory when a live migration is done. Another query, as I have not seen too many VM migrations, is that what happens to the memory contents such as data yet to be written onto disk, states etc happens when one of the RHCS cluster hosts which is running VM fail: does the cluster restart the machine? An example perhaps would be suppose the VM is running a movie what would the user's experience would be. I tried it on cluster with ctdb. The movie simply restarted. CIFS Share with encrypted credentials

Hi, I have a CIFS share that I mount on a CentOS6.4. Currently I am keeping the password in a regular hidden file, for example /test/.cred with the username and password. the /etc/fstab directive points to that file. for example: //10.0.0.1/share /mnt cifs defaults,credentials=/test/.cred Since this file is readable by the root user, I figured if there might be a way to encrypt this file, and with decrypt this file with a script so the mount will succeed, and then encrypt it again. or maybe there is another way of doing this? any ideas? --- Dolev

installing centos with oos ntfs format drives

greetings. i am going to run a fresh install of centos 6.4 and want to mount 3 partitions of oos that are formatted as ntfs in an oem installed box. if during install, i set up partitions /dev/sda1, /dev/sda2, and /dev/sdb1 as ntfs, will install install ntfs software or will i have to select it later on in installation? also, is it better to mount them under /mnt to keep /media clean? tia. -- peace out. in a world with out fences, who needs gates. tc.hago. g .

Partitionable Raid

Hi, After reading the tutorial at http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/Install_On_Partitionable_RAID1 I have the following question: What should I put instead of splashimage=(hd0,0)/grub/splash.xpm.gz and root (hd0,0) on /etc/grub.conf? Should I leave those lines untouched? If so, how would grub know where to boot from if /dev/sda fails? Or I would need to swap the drives in order to boot properly and then put a new one as /dev/sdb and then add it to the array? Thanks in advance for all the help. Best regards, Eugenio Pacheco

Weird netinstall issue

Hi. The other day I burnt a copy of a CentOS 6.4 64 bit netinstall disc, verified the disc which passed & about a third of the way through the install it informed me that there was no CD in the drive & refused to carry on. So I burnt another & the same thing happened. So using the same disk burner & the same batch of disks, I burnt a copy of a Debian 7.1 netinstall & it installed perfectly. Any thoughts gladly welcome (the CentOS disc was downloaded from the CentOS repos). SysRq over usb serial adapters

I am having trouble sending sysrq commands over USB serial, and I'm not sure what else to check. I have two identical machines, each with usb-to-serial adapters, joined by a null modem adapter. One runs an agetty, the other minicom. I can log in over the agetty as a user and it works as expected, until I try to send a sysrq. To send a break in minicom, I type [Ctrl]+[a] then [f]. Then I type the character [m] to do a test. I expect to see memory information print to screen, or at least show up in dmesg. Instead I only see the letter m on my shell. I'm using 115200, 8N1, VT102. I can echo m > /proc/sysctl-trigger, and dmesg shows that the sysrq was received when initiated via the procfs interface. Login prompt often hangs

Hi all, I have a strong Dell server running RHEL5.5 every now and then the server hangs (SSH access is frozen) and when attemping to login the prompt hangs and after a while the message " can't update CMOS clock from 2 to 47 CIFS VFS No respone for cmd 114 mid 188" only a reboot causes it to work properly again. i tried fsck'ing with no luck. I must say the server does work very hard often, but I was wondering what could be the problem. Thanks! --- Dolev

I am having some problems with hylafax+ on CentOS 5.9 converting files into appropriate tiff files that are faxable; the problem is apparently fixed in ghostscript 9.07. The CentOS repositories currently have ghostscript-8.70-14.el5_8.1.x86_64 I surely appreciate the maintainers of the repositories; can any of you direct me to whom maintains ghostscript on the repository or when 9.07 is planned to be included. I would also like to request that ghostpcl be included, but I am not certain who or how to ask. Thanks for your assistance. Greg Ennis

Intel 10G X520-2 and iscsi storage poor performance

Hi, we have a storageserver (Centos 6.4) with a dualport Intel 10G X520-2 Adapter. A QSan P600Q-D316 Storage is configured with 8*SATA Drives raid 5 for test, connected trought a Cisco UCS 6100 Series Fabric Interconnect 10G Switch. I formated the storage with ext4 defaults, one volume and got r/w rates about 10MB/s some up to 40MB/s .... VERY POOR.... So we returned the storage to our dealer and they tested the hardware and did some IO Meter Test with VMware ESXi 5.1 Server -> virtual Windows 2k8-R2 on the Qsan Storage. The VM did some r/w IO Meter Benchmark up to 1000 MB/Sec. Better. Hardware looks o.k. Than they installed a Windows 2k8-R2 server and attached the QSAN. The r/w speed is about 400-500 MB/s. After that the dealer installed a Centos 6.4 as I did and the r/w performance is back to our results .... up to 40MB/s .... What the hell? Are the default driver and settings so bad? I know and researched a lot of tuning options like buffers, new drivers etc. We did not check that for now, but are'nt there some defalut values and settings which apply as well to be much faster? Or in other words, are some realy simple hints and suggestions to a) debug / find the bottleneck and b) to increase the performance to the same level as windows? erase disk

Hi. I have a CentOS server (a Dell 860) with two drives in it. One is running CentOS 6.4 which I want to keep & the bigger 400GB drive has Debian 7 on it which I want to erase & use for backups. Which is the best way to go about achieving my intended goal? The Debian drive is not mounted when Centos is booted. Any help appreciated. LiveCD issue

Greetings, I am trying to build a Centos 6.4 LiveCD using the config provided per Centos minimal Live kickstart using command: livecd-creator --config=centos-livecd-minimal.ks --fslabel=c6min-live --debug --verbose --cache=ssclone-rpm-cache --logfile=ssclone.log I included rsync, samba and mc in the kickstart file The build succeded in making an iso but the iso fails to boot on KVM based vm and the real hardware with real cd. the error comes from dracut: dracut: FATAL: Don't know how to handle 'root=live:CDLABEL=c6min-live' dracut: Refusing to continue I am almost tearing my hair out on this. to lvm or not to lvm - why/when to use lvm

Hi, I was wondering, why/when it is useful or when should I avoid to use LVM. I think the big advantage of LVMing is if you modify (rezising, ...) disk and filesystem layouts "a lot". Are there any real pros or cons for following situations regarding e.g. management and speed? e.g.: I do have a server system raid for which the disk layout will not change; e.g. /var /usr /home will not change much in size. OR I do have some file storage shares (iscsi raids) up to some TB each on one big storage device. Sometimes (e.g. after a server crash) it is useful to remount the storage to a different server. Should I use LVM on the iscsi storage volumes? Any suggestion and comment is welcome . Regards . Best Practice to remove an ISCSI LVM from a system

Hi, I'd like to know what would be the best way to remove an iscsi lvm storage from a server. (removing all reference to that storage etc.) The storage in question will be reset and reformated and used on a different server; so no LVM export is needed. Do I have to do lvremove ..., vgremove ..., pvremove ... and do an iscsiadm -m node -T ... -p ... -u and iscsiadm -m node -o delete -T ... -p ... in order to achieve that? scanner only works in su mode

Apparently I hadn't done any scanning since my move to centos. hp-scan works for root, but not for me as me. When I try to use xsane, it tells me no device found. When I try to use hp-scan as myself it tells me: error: Unable to locate device hpaio:/usb/Photosmart_C3100_series?serial=CN6ARC321S04KV using SANE backend hpaio:. Please check HPLIP installation. What do I change to make it let me use xsane or hp-scan as myself? Hi All, I'm looking for input as to how I may restrict some post commit hooks by way of SELinux or some other mechanism. Here's a description of the problem that I need to solve. I have a source code server that support SVN and soon git. The server has no actual users on it and we use CAS with Apache basic authentication to authenticate and authorize users access to the repository. This server mounts two NFS shares, one for the mirror environment for HTTP based installations and another NFS share for our Puppet environment. There is a corresponding source repository and NFS share for each "user" of the system as well as corresponding NFS shares for mirror and puppet. All the content is owned by the user Apache. Each time a user commits scripts are run to check this code out of the source code server and into a respective /mirror/<repotype>/<reponame> /puppet/<repotype>/<reponame> But there are other bits of code that the end user would like to also be able to run, such as generating group information based on the content of a file that was committed manual pruning of some arbitrary data and other things that I don't want to account for in code. Essentially allowing them to extend the system further for their needs. This means that I need to ensure that a user isn't able to run code like rm -rf /etc/password or rm -rf /{mirror,puppet}/* which would essentially ruin everyone's data. What I essentially would like to do is ensure that if someone were to attempt to run any of the third party code that the permissions for that run would be within the context of their own areas so that the most damage they could do is wipe out the content of their /mirror/<repotype>/<reponame> & /puppet/<repotype>/<reponame> while not having to setup and destroy a (potentially) large chroot environment each time the script is run. -- James A. Hi, I am studying for the RHCSA Exam and wanted to install CentOS 6.4 alongside Windows 8. I got a new laptop with a processor that supports virtualization. I am planning to remove all the recovery partitions after backing up all drivers etc. on them. Lets see how it works out. Any caveats I should know about? Regards adj

So, I would rather do all the "replace file" operations before any of that init stuff gets done. Is this possible without much ado? Or should I rather do the "replace file" operations at shutdown (how, when?) and execute only the sql command from rc.local? Google suggests a file /etc/rc.shutdown (or rc.local.shutdown?) which, if I understand correctly, would be carried out after the init stuff for the shutdown (rc0) has been done. Kai

x2go (vs. freenx)?

Is anyone using x2go on Centos - and if so, is there any reason to think about switching from freenx? The old NX client for mac was a powerpc binary and is no longer supported under mountain lion - and their new alpha release crashed my mac after an OSX update so I'm curious if there is anything better around. Howto: Extremely tight security rsync shell for backups

We've been using rsync since forever to back up all our servers and it's worked without a problem. But in a recent security review, we noted that our specific rsync backup host is using root keys to access the server, meaning that if the keys on the backup server were leaked/compromised in any fashion, that would provide r00t access to the servers being backed up. Since this doesn't seem to be readily documented, I thought I'd provide it to the community. After some playing around, we've found it is possible to set up rsync/ssh so that the connecting server can ONLY run rsync with a predetermined set of options. // OBJECTIVES // 1) Make it so the backup server's SSH key can only be used A) in an rsync read-only. Hello, gpk-update-viewer on my CentOS 6 desktop gives me an error about untrusted updates. When running yum update from a terminal I get the following error: Package chkconfig-1.3.49.3-2.el6_4.1.x86_64.rpm is not signed No other packages seem to be affected so for now I updated excuding chkconfig and ntsysv. Setting up postfix under CentOS-6

I recently, perhaps foolishly, changed over a remote server from sendmail/procmail to postfix/amavis/spamassassin/clamd , and I'm finding it difficult to configure this setup. The CentOS document <http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/postfix> explicitly says that its instructions may not work in CentOS-6. Does anyone know of reasonably simple postfix documentation for CentOS-6? I've been amazed how bad the postfix documentation is. It actually seems to be worse that sendmail documentation, which I thought established a record for this sort of thing. Run one-time startup script

I have to change IP numbers across a number of virtual and physical machines because of network center move. This has to be done before network startup, of course. I'm thinking about the best method to do this. Where should I include/init this script? Or would it rather make more sense to do this on the last shutdown? Changes largely involve removing old files and putting new files in place (resolv.conf, hosts, sysconfig/network + network-scripts, firewall, postfix, httpd etc.). The only other change besides replacing files would be changing the IP address in a webcontrol interface in a MySQL table, so this part has to be done after MySQL startup. Could be run-once or have to disable manually after successful startup. Thanks, Kai

updates issue

Since doing "yum update" this morning, an update that installed several packages, the updater shows me 3 packages to install: hpijs-1:3.12.4-4.el6_4.1 (x86_64) hplip-common-3.12.4-4.el6_4.1 (x86_64) hplip-libs-3.12.4-4.el6_4.1 (x86_64) but when I attempt to actually run the update I get: hplip-libs-3.12.4-4.el6.i686 requires libsane.so.1 hplip-libs-3.12.4-4.el6.i686 requires hplip-common = 3.12.4-4.el6 : Success - empty transaction this is a 64-bit computer running 6.4 x86_64, and none of these 3 packages as installed is i686 they are all x86_64. You will use that as your exam client (all your answer will be in the virtual machine). If you really want to boot that, I would suggest you use a external hard drive to boot CentOS, and install virtual machines in it. Sorry for top posting but this windows phone doesn't let me edit replies! I agree that virtualbox or VMware is an easier option, but the RHCSA exam objectives require me to have knowledge about KVM. I will be running multiple virtual instances of centos from within centos. There is this EFI partition on the hard disk. Not sure what to do with it. Also its different from the good old bios, this EFI won't let my USB drive boot! It's less likely that you'd accidentally corrupt your Windows 8 setup that way. Some of the virtualization options might come in handy as well, by letting you do things like rolling back to a snapshot, etc., that might help you to repeatedly try different things without risk of having to keep reinstalling CentOS for each thing you want to try. NFS mounted files owned by nobody

I have 2 centos boxes and I want to NFS mount a dir from one to the other. When I do that the files on the client all are owned by nobody.nobody. I verified that the user and group of the files on the server exist on both hosts and have the same uid and gid. I googled and found this: http://whacked.net/2006/07/26/nfsv4nfs-mapid-nobody-domain/ domainname on both machines returns (none). I edited /etc/resolve.conf on both and put 'domain foobar' as the first line in both. But then when I did a 'service network restart' the files were re-written and my changes were gone. On one system /etc/resolve.conf says "Generated by NetworkManager". On the other system it says "generated by /sbin/dhclient-script" (I didn't set these systems up.) I don't even know if this domain stuff is even the correct solution. I just want the NFS mounted dir to retain the real user ownership it has on the server. How can I achieve that? Centos 5.0 Printer Reshare

Hi, I have a number of networked printers configured on my server. Some are mounts from other SMB servers, some are directly connected via socket://ip_address:9100. I can't find how to allow other Unix/Linux machines to use these printers. I need to re-share them for use by these other machines. Any ideas or direction to look? Best Regards, John

why kdm crashes

We have a pretty standard installation of CentOS 6.4 on our workstations. We've been running into issues where kdm crashes every once in a while when someone tries to log in on the console. The only way to recover when it happens seems to be to restart kdm (kill -HUP `pgrep -f /usr/bin/kdm`) (or reboot of course) and it never seems to happen twice in a row. I am not sure where to start looking to see why kdm would crash like this so intermittently. Does anyone have any idea why this might be happening? -- Thanks! Miranda

SAMBA update appears to have breoken WinShare connectivity

We have a very old MS-Windows domain running on a Win2K advanced server. After the most recent update to Samba it appears that we can no longer connect to shares on that system from our CentOS-6.4 workstations. Is this a known problem or configuration issue that we need to address through local modifications or do we have to roll back to the older version to regain connectivity? Good morning! On a CentOS 6.4 / 64 bit server I have installed the watchdog 5.5 package. The rpm -qi watchdog states: The watchdog program can be used as a powerful software watchdog daemon or may be alternately used with a hardware watchdog device such as the IPMI hardware watchdog driver interface to a resident Baseboard Management Controller (BMC). ... This configuration file is also used to set the watchdog to be used as a hardware watchdog instead of its default software watchdog operation. I downloaded dwm and installed - all is fine. The manual says Once installed, add to your $HOME/.xinitrc exec dwm and it should start when you run startx. I did that - if I run startx this works... however - if I am running X from /etc/inittab how do I start up dwm ? Thanks, Jerry

Hi, I purchased a VPS with OpenVZ with infrastructure installed Centos 6.4 64bit. When I configure OpenVPN for remote access I can not because I do not get loaded into the interface modules tun / tap from console: #cat /dev/net/tun cat: /dev/net/tun: No such file or directory #lsmod | grep tun # # uname -r 2.6.32-042stab079.6 I have to ask for support to those who sold the VPS or can I fix myself? Difficulty building custom Install CD

Greetings, I am trying to follos the procedure as outlined in: http://smorgasbork.com/component/content/article/35-linux/128-building-a-cu… I am using Cendos minimal ISO to build a custom installer and Live CD (with addition of NTP, samba and some custom application with dependencies) According to the above link: "In RHEL/CentOS 6, this file is no longer called just "comps.xml"; instead, it has some horrendous hex string for a name. In CentOS 6.2, it is named bedb7dc8fdf920deffbdc5a70ea0d6d77255656556184f5e996e8a88a63d145c-c6-x86_64-comps.xml.gz. " Indeed horrendeous file. I am not able find the *comps.xml. What should I do and where would I find it. Else what is the method for pacakaging (Centos 6.4 minimal + some custom app rpms + custom configs) ? -- Regards, Rajagopal

Most of the time since last Thursday or so, that piece of crap called Nixnet (ix.manitu) has been blocking my hosting provider's mailservers. I did ask, when I talked to support last week, and they host *millions* of domains. They do not have a million techs (neither does google - but I'm *sure* none of you have ever gotten spam from google mail, right?). Again, I'll give my argument that blocking a mailserver, rather than a domain has been the *WRONG* answer for at least 15 or more years. A dozen or so years ago, they blocked Chicago roadrunner... which provided 'Net access and email to about half the City of Chicago, IL, USA, which, Karanbir, is about a quarter the size of the London metro area, so we're talking hundreds of thousands of people. Now, in days after massive consolidation of ISPs (even the Canadian ISP that userfriendly's Columbia Internet has bee bought and closed up), this means that they're blocking telcos and giant hosting providers. I'm really, REALLY tired of being blocked when a couple dozen domains, hiding out in millions of them at one hosting provider, results in a few million people being blocked from sending email. mark

Evergreen ILS on CentOS?

I spent a number of hours at one of the local SF clubs turning a desktop into a dual-boot (if they ever need that for anything) CentOS 6.4 system, then trying to install Evergreen, an oss library package. Can you say, "dependency hell"? I suspect they wrote it on Ubuntu (this is client/server software, dunno why they'd do that). At any rate, I yum installed the postgresql 9.x package that pgsql has on their official site, and that installed with no problems at all. Then evergreen. Which wouldn't build, because libmemcache was too old. I tried to build a newer package, after d/l one from the memcache official site. And *that* wouldn't build, because it wanted something that libevent-devel for CentOS 6.4 didn't provide. I've got two possible routes, here: a) I can try to build an older, deprecated version of Evergreen, or I can try to build a newer libevent and stuff - some of which, IIRC, kde wants. Opinions? Suggestions? And if anyone's worked with evergreen, PLEASE TALK TO ME!!! mark

Gnome 2.x window placement

When starting a program from the commandline in C5, is there any way to specify where on the screen the resulting window will be put? I have a nuisance of a problem: Running rdesktop with the -D option (which hides window decorations, making the rdesktop window appear borderless), one cannot (as far as I can figure out) drag the window: there are no borders to grab, and alt-drag doesn't work either. it's always opening in a place that covers other windows, and I can't drag it away from there. specifically: I want to run two instances of rdesktop, and it always plunks the second one right on top of the first one. since I can't drag either of them, I can't see them both at the same time. (I "carefully" configure each of them so they are the exact size of the physical screen, so that it looks like a real windows session, and also prevents me from casually/stupidly closing the entire RDP window by accident.) Since I have two displays, I'd like to place one of them on each screen, by itself. Anyone know how to solve this? thanks! converting a RHEL box to CentOS

Hey folks, Google found nothing in this list archives for me but did find this : http://www.unixmen.com/how-to-jul-convert-rhel-5-to-centos-5/ Before I just go try that on one of my systems can someone confirm that it works? I'm running RHEL 5.7 so I guess I'd replace the 5.4 in the URL with 5.7 Basically I let my RHEL licenses run out (never really used them) and am getting warnings now from yum. Want to just switch over to the CentOS repos. Hi All. I monitor number of crond processes on my machines. On one of them I have 2 crond processes for a short period of time (few minutes) everyday. grub command line

Hello Everyone I have a remote CentOS 6.4 server (with KVM access), when I received the server it was running with LVM on single disk (sda) I managed to remove LVM and install raid 1 in sda and sdb disks the mirroring is working fine, my only issue now is that everytime I reboot the server I got the grub command line and I have manually boot using comand grub> configfile (hd1,0)/grub/grub.conf OR grub> configfile (hd0,0)/grub/grub.conf then it will boot fine without any error. Any idea how can I make it auto boot ? I tried almost everything I can find in the internet. Building CentOS 6.2 custom install media

Hi, For the OLPC school server ("XS") we are planning to move from our dated F9 setup to CentOS 6.2. Thanks for all the effort involved in producing this distro. One important part of this project is a 'respin' of the install media - we need to add a handful of packages from external repositories, and maybe run a command late in the install. Are the scripts/configurations used to produce the CentOS official CD/DVDs available? I guess this would be our most reliable/sensible starting point. I am familiar with pungi, kickstart, anaconda, etc, so just a simple git link would be enough to get me started. Thanks, Daniel

Cloning CentOS workstations

I manage a set of CentOS operations workstations which are all clones of each other (3 "live" and 1 "spare" kept powered down); each has a single drive with four partitions (/boot, /, /home, swap). I've already set up cron'd rsync jobs to copy the operations accounts between the workstations on a daily basis, so that when one fails, it is a simple, quick process to swap in the spare, restore the accounts from one of the others, and continue operations. This has been successfully tested in practice on more than one occasion. However, when I perform system updates (about once a month), I like to create a temporary "clone" of the system to an external drive before running the update, so that I can simply swap drives or clone back if something goes horribly wrong. I have been using "CloneZilla" to do this, but it can take a while since it blanks each partition before copying, and requires a system shutdown. Question 1: Would it be sufficient to simply use CloneZilla once to initialize the backup drive (or do it manually, but CloneZilla makes it easy-peasy), and then use "rsync -aHx --delete" (let me know if I missed an important rsync option) to update the clone partitions from then on? I am assuming that the MBR typically doesn't get rewritten during system updates, though "/etc/grub.conf" obviously does get changed. Suppose I want to store more than one workstation on a single drive (easy), and be able to boot into any of the stored configurations (hard). Here's what I thought of: 1) Create a small "master" partition which contains a bootloader (such as a CentOS rescue disk), and a single "swap" partition. 2) Create one partition "set" per workstation (/boot, /, /home, excluding swap). Obviously, these will all likely be logical, and each workstation must use unique labels for mounting partitions. 3) On the "master" partition, modify the bootloader menu to allow one to chainload the /boot partitions for each configuration. (This is the "Voila!" step that I haven't fully figured out.) Question 2: Is there a better way to do the above? How do I perform the "Voila!" step, i.e. what's the right chainload command for this? Also, the chainloaded partitions are logical; is this OK? I also have a single off-site NAS disk which contains clones of all the critical workstations on-site. Most of them are Macs, so I can use sparseimages on the NAS for the clones and get easy-peasy incremental clones. I also do this for the Linux box (backing it up incrementally to an HFS case-sensitive sparseimage via rsync), but it's (obviously) a bit of a kludge. Question 3: Is there a UNIX equivalent to the Mac sparseimage that I should be using for this? ("tar -u" can do it (duh), but then the backup file grows without bound.) MySQL 5.1.69 at CentOS 6.4 doesn't know enable-named-pipe?

Hello, I've only had experience with PostgreSQL sofar, but have now to install MySQL (and WordPress) on a CentOS 6.4 /64 bit server. I have installed the mysql-5.1.69-1.el6_4.x86_64 package and executed the following commands: # chkconfig mysqld on # service mysqld start # /usr/bin/mysqladmin -u root password 'xxxxx' # /usr/bin/mysql_secure_installation Then I've noticed that mysqld_safe process is listening at 0.0.0.0 and decided to change that - so that my WordPress installation only uses domain sockets (or unix pipes? not sure). So I've modified the /etc/my.cnf to: [mysqld] datadir=/var/lib/mysql socket=/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock user=mysql # Disabling symbolic-links is recommended to prevent assorted security risks symbolic-links=0 bind-address = localhost skip-networking enable-named-pipe [mysqld_safe] log-error=/var/log/mysqld.log pid-file=/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.pid But now MySQL refuses to start: # service mysqld restart Stopping mysqld: [ OK ] MySQL Daemon failed to start. Apple movie trailers on Centos6/Firefox

Hi all! Once again, Apple has messed with their trailers/website such that I can no longer play their trailers on Centos 6 (note that it still works fine on my two Fedora machines, F17 and F19, without any special settings. on Centos, I've long ago found that by setting the user agent to certain values I could make it work, but now that no longer helps. when I try to view a trailer all I get is a "download Quicktime" page. When I was running C5, I used mplayer plugin to do the video and it worked fine. after installing C6, I discovered that Totem also worked without the need to mess with mplayer installation. then all of a sudden, a couple weeks ago, it stopped working. at the same time, the choices they offered changed, so now they only offer "automatic", "480p" or "720p". this link is to one I can still play: http://trailers.apple.com/trailers/independent/elemental/ and this is a newer one I cannot: http://trailers.apple.com/trailers/disney/monstersuniversity/ I am (and have been) using the User Agent Switcher plugin for firefox (for several years) to make this all work, and until recently it has. Greetings, I am trying to prepare 1. installer usb using iso with (centos minimal + custom rpm) 2. a Live usb using (centos minimal + custom rpm) I do not have any information of the configuration of target system beforehand -- especially the storage devices. Could be two or more and may a dvd-rw. Unknown 1. How does one specify the path for kickstart file in the syslinux.cfg which is in the usb given that device ? 2. where should the kickstart file be located - inside isolinux directory or above it? 3. Tk font problem with CentOS 6

I'm having an odd problem which I can't seem to find the answer to. I have recently upgraded from CentOS 5 to CentOS 6 (using a fresh install and migrate). However, I have a bunch of Tk widgets that use font names like "12x24" and "5x7", etc. Under CentOS 5 (Tk 8.4), this worked fine; however, under CentOS 6 (Tk 8.5), this does not seem to work properly; it does not find the fonts and reverts to a (pretty, but wrong) default font. I have verified using xlsfonts, xdpyfont, etc. that the fonts exist; for example, "12x24" is apparently now an alias for: -Sony-Fixed-Medium-R-Normal--24-170-100-100-C-120-ISO8859-1 and if I specify this full name in Tk, it works fine. CentOS at the OpenNebulaConf

Hello everyone, As you may be aware, we are holding the first OpenNebula Conference [1] in Berlin, this 24-26 September. The conference is the perfect place to learn about practical Cloud Computing, aimed at cloud users, developers, executives and IT managers to help them tackle their computational and business challenges. The goal is to foster fruitful and educational discussions around Cloud Computing and OpenNebula. We think this is of special interests to CentOS users and developers, since many OpenNebula users are also part of the CentOS userbase. There will even be a keynote about CentOS by Karanbir Singh [2] by the name of "CentOS and OpenNebula, a perfect match". Registration closing date is getting closer, so seize the moment and register now [3]! large SCSI RAID, replacing server

I have a system running CentOS 6.3, with a SCSI attached RAID: http://www.raidweb.com/index.php/2012-10-24-12-40-09/janus-ii-scsi/2012-10-… For disaster recovery purposes, I want to build up a spare system which could take the place of the server hosting the RAID above.
