CentOS6 bind DLV problems

I have two CentOS6 boxes, both running Bind as a local resolver, with what appears to me to be the same configuration as each other. I have a problem on one but not the other, to do with DNSSEC Lookaside Validation. On the box with the problem, if I do: host www.bbc.co.uk 127.0.0.1 (for example), it sits there for a while, then gives me a timeout error. I did some tests while running a tcpdump packet capture on udp port 53, and I discovered that bind was fetching the correct answer normally, and then performing a validation query to one of the DLV servers at ISC (e.g. 199.6.0.29, 199.6.0.30, 199.6.1.29 or 199.6.1.30). It was not receiving any reply. After several seconds, it tried another DLV server and again received no reply. A similar test on the other box receives replies from ISC no problem. I have tried disabling iptables on the failing box, but that didn't help. I'm assuming something in the request causes ISC to ignore it. The key records stored in /var/named/dynamic are also the same on both. The failing box fails whether allow-query and allow-recursion are commented out or not. I can make it work by commenting out the dnssec lines, but of course that it just disabling the queries to ISC. Can anyone give me any ideas why one box would get DLV replies and the other would not? samba: check password with AD without joining domain?

Is there a way to get samba to authenticate against an AD without having to join that domain (which needs admin credentials)? I don't want any of the automatic user creation or mapping stuff from winbind, just a password check instead of having to maintain a local password. I can get that effect via kerberos for normal linux logins by using authconfig-tui, checking kerberos, and filling in the domain/kdc details. Local users still have to be added to the linux system, but where the user names match they can authenticate with their domain password. But, samba doesn't work that way. Even though the authconfig program modifies the smb.conf file, it doesn't seem to work without joining the domain. Is it possible to make it just authenticate via kerberos but otherwise use the local account details for the matching user? -- Les Mikesell lesmikesell(a)gmail.com

I asked here a week or so ago, and referenced an older bug, but haven't seen any comments. Googling, I see others asking about the same. Datum: *every* one I've found is like this: they're all HP DL580's or DL380's, or such. This is being used for heavy-duty scientific computing. Does anyone know if it *will* it seriously affect throughput speed if I turn off irqbalance? It's running 6.4, btw. mark

What is the easiest way to convert a webpage into a jpg or png file? I've seen several programs that can do various conversions, but nothing open source that can do it in a single conversion. Just wondering if anyone on the list has suggestions for something I can put into a script to convert a webpage into a file I can use with my screensaver. c

Intel e1000e driver bug and 82574L controller

One of the more promising solutions I'm looking at for my dual-ethernet dual-monitor workstation contains an Intel 82574L Ethernet controller. I found a LOT of postings regarding a bug in the driver for this controller: http://www.doxer.org/learn-linux/resolved-intel-e1000e-driver-bug-on-82574l… https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=632650 but there isn't any clear indication as to whether the bug has been resolved in mainline CentOS 6.4 or not. Hi I want to setup a SMS system for Nagios on a 5.9 box. I read in a blog that the two modems Huawei [ E160G | E176 ] work with 6.3. Anybody any experience with those modems and do they work with 5.9? Are there any other devices that are better/recommended? 3TB External USB Drive isn't recognized

We have a 3TB external USB drive that I am trying to attach to some CentOS5 servers. I have tried an older Dell PE1950 and a newer R310 but neither one seems to be able to read the drive. It works no problem on windows servers/workstations and I was able to format with NTFS. I know there are different methods for formatting large disks but this one doesn't even seem to show up as a /dev/ device. I supplied the dmesg output I see when I plug in the device. Is this a limitation of CentOS5? I've copied some files from the firefox cache. According to file, they are Macromedia Flash data (compressed), version 9. How do I play them locally? I saw them from a remote site through firefox, but I cannot seem to play them locally. neither mplayer nor vlc seems to work. Pointing firefox at them didn't work either. Disable Kernel Screen Blanker

Hey Y'all, I'm trying to turn off the kernel screen blanker that shuts off the video after about 10 minutes of inactivity at the keyboard. After extensive googling I've found two ways to *NOT* do it. In my home .xinitrc setterm -blank 0 -powersave off -powerdown 0 xset s off In /etc/rc.local /usr/bin/setterm -powersave off -blank 0 I've tried both to no effect. Of course I've turned off the screen saver in the Gnome desktop. How do I stop this machine from blanking the screen with no activity? I want video full time! I know someone is going to ask, "Why do you want to do that?", so to save you from asking. 1. I'm setting up a kiosk that customers can use interactively. It's not very inviting to passers by when the screen is blank. 2. I want to watch movies and Skype without having to poke the mouse all the time. 3. My monitor is very unhappy when the video signal is cut off. 4. My wife is very unhappy when the screen goes blank. 5. Insert your reason here. Motherboard and chipset compatibility

So, having returned from a month's vacation, I'm back to work on attempting to build a set of small form factor CentOS compatible computers. I've really tried to do my homework, but this doesn't appear (at first glance) to be at all easy. It's not made easier by the fact that I have to get it right the first time (and I haven't built a PC in a decade); the time and money cost of shipping anything to and from my remote location in Chile means I can't afford to waste time buying and returning things. First question: does anyone have any experience with the Jetway NF9E-Q77 or ZOTAC Z77ITX-A-E motherboards? Having struck out on Intel Q77 or Z77-based SFF motherboards (the DQ77** series is completely out of stock everywhere, and the DZ77** series is ATX only), I have found a couple of Mini-ITX systems based on these two motherboards. Second question: Where can I get information about which Intel chipsets (Z77 vs Z87 vs Q77 vs C602 vs ...geez, there are a LOT of chipsets, as evidenced by http://www.supermicro.com/support/faqs/os.cfm) are supported by CentOS 6 / RHEL 6? I have not been able to find this information on either the Intel, RedHat, or CentOS web sites. Third (more general) question: My requirements are (I believe) modest: * 1U short-depth rackmount chassis OR Mini-ITX small-footprint chassis * Dual GbE network ports * Dual 1920x1200 monitor display * One SSD drive * 32-bit CentOS 6.4 compatible. It's the combination of the first, third, and fifth requirements that really seems to get me hung up. I've found plenty of 1U server systems (such as SuperMicro), but none of them support dual displays. (Some of them have a PCIe16x riser card that could conceivably accomodate a separate graphics card, assuming I could find one that fits; I have Emails in to various tech supports to inquire about this. I've found LOTS of 2U solutions, thanks, but only have 1U of available rack.) As far as Linux support goes, the RHEL Hardware List has thus far been pretty useless (much of the hardware on it is obsolete or discontinued), and most manufacturers' web sites have been equally useless. (One exception being ASUS, which has a Linux-compatibility list at http://www.asus.com/websites/global/aboutasus/OS/Linux.pdf SuperMicro has a very nice list referenced above, but none of their small form factor motherboards support dual displays AFAICT; I have found nothing useful at Intel's site.) Again, how does one find this kind of thing out? There has to be a better solution than 3 days of web searches, Emails to tech support, and forum posts. In addition, the USFF Optiplex seems to be limited to a Core i3 processor and a mere 2GB of memory, which while acceptable is not optimal (and worse than some other solutions I'm looking at). And for everyone suggesting KVMs, VMs, SSH, or other solutions...this is a telescope operations system, so none of those are really appropriate to the task, I'm afraid. I really want direct monitor/keyboard/mouse connections (and yes, I keep a hotspare warmed up at all times in case of a critical failure, and have had to use it on more than one occasion). Dell R515 with PERC H700 - JBOD?

Hello, I'm curiuos if anyone knows if it's possible to set up a Dell R515 (which has PERC H700) to be JBOD. It seems the only options are RAID0 or RAID1. I read posts, where people say it can by done by making each disk its own RAID0. This works, but it wigs out when that disk is removed, and forgets a disk was ever there (unless I go back in the PERC and fix it). My plan is to have a system where I can remove and replace the drives regularly, while the system is on/running. I do this on a SuperMicro, but wanted to migrate this server to a Dell. I tried disabling the RAID in the BIOS, but then the installer never sees the disks. Any ideas would be great. Thanks! Hi, I'm currently at CentOS 5.8. I'm using openssl version openssl-0.9.8e-22.el5. The following vulnerability was reported by a Nessus security scan: "SSL/ TLS Renegotion Handshakes MiTm Plaintext Data Injection" As per following link, Redhat has introduced openssl-0.9.8m which fixes this specific issue: https://access.redhat.com/site/articles/20490#Updates_adding_RFC_5746_suppo… I created rpm for openssl-0.9.8m using tarball and when I tried to install it, I got "libssl.so.6()(64bit) is needed by <rpm name>" errors which would be solved by installing openssl098e rpm. This rpm is a part of CentOS 6 and so I can't install it. Do we have openssl-0.9.8m or higher rpm available for CentOS 5? Why libnetfilter_queue is missing from CentOS, but available in, Fedora?

I am asking this on behalf of the HIPL developers; http://infrahip.hiit.fi/ https://launchpad.net/hipl They have been working on getting their code consistant to the new libnetfilter architecture. Finally have Fedora 18 and 19 available, but have hit a stumbling block with Centos 6. They tell me they are not finding libnetfilter_queue. Autofs - can you mount only certain home dirs?

Does autofs take completed control of directories mentioned in auto.master? The examples with /home show that you can specify individual users instead of * and &, but even then it seems to take over the whole /home level so you can't see or add local subdirs. What FileSystems for large stores and very very large stores?

I was learning about the different FS exists. I was working on systems that ReiserFS was the star but since there is no longer support from the creator there are other consolidations to be done. I want to ask about couple FS options. EXT4 which is amazing for one node but for more it's another story. I have heard about GFS2 and GlusterFS and read the docs and official materials from RH on them. In the RH docs it states the EXT4 limit files per directory is 65k and I had a directory which was pretty loaded with files and I am unsure exactly what was the size but I am almost sure it was larger the 65k files per directory. I was considering using GlusterFS for a very large storage system with NFS front. I am still unsure EXT4 should or shouldn't be able to handle more then 16TB since the linux kernel ext4 docs at: https://www.kernel.org/doc/Documentation/filesystems/ext4.txt in section 2.1 it states: * ability to use filesystems > 16TB (e2fsprogs support not available yet). so can I use it or not?? if there are no tools to handle this size then I cannot trust it. I want to create a storage with more then 16TB based on GlusterFS since it allows me to use 2-3 rings FS which will allow me to put the storage in a form of: 1 client -> HA NFS servers -> GlusterFS cluster. it seems to more that GlusterFS is a better choice then Swift since RH do provide support for it. qemu-kvm package?

I just did a clean net install of CentOS 6.4 and when I run virt-manager it says that qemu-kvm is missing, but when I try to install it with yum it says that there isn't a package with that name. Is something wrong with my configuration? Or what is causing this package to appear as not available? Thanks, Dave

pppd + rp-pppoe: /sbin/ifup-local when ADSL re-up?

Hi all, I set up an ADSL connection using rp-pppoe/pppoe-setup. The setting is to persist the connection, so that when the link goes down, it's re-up'd by pppd. The interface is "ppp0" and it appears "/sbin/ifup-local" is not called when re-uppping the ADSL link. It is a problem for me, as I have some routing tables which get cleared from the routes "via ppp0" when the ADSL is down and I need the routes to be added when "ppp0" is back. What's your suggestion in order to either launch "/sbin/ifup-local"or launch a script when "pppd" gets "ppp0" back? -- RMA.

Cisco DPC3825 - Web Server

Friends I have the following Cisco DPC3825. Enter the settings and put in the DMZ web server that I have, but when I try to access it from another network I get the error code 504, which is the gateway problem. I can access the server via ssh without problems. Research on google for 3 days and can not find the solution to my problem. This router is different compared to the ones I had. The IP to access my router via web from the local network is 192.168.100.1, and the IP of the server I put in the DMZ is 192.168.0.17. No other information could you provide to clarify my problem. forcing linux kernel 3 to recognize cdrom as hdX

Hello, I have a problem with older version of anaconda linux installer. I have upgraded kernel in my distro, but, when this anaconda boot with new 3.4.52 kernel, can NOT find cdrom. As far as I understand, this is because the new kernel recognize cd drive as srX, scdX instead of older hdX with 2.6.18. At the moment I can not upgrade anaconda and forced this kernel to recognize it as before. Are there any kernel command line argument, kernel config or something else for kernel 3.4.52 to recognize this cdrom as hdX? Best Regards, -- Oguz YILMAZ

file system resizing with cloud-init on centos/redhat??

Hi, Has any one used resizefs module with cloud-init on centos/redhat before? How to call it with #cloud-config user data, do I need to give it any parameters? I googled cloud-init, but it is pretty difficult to find a manual/book on this, and mostly they are Ubuntu based. If possible, I'd like to use a same image/AMI to boot up instances(VMs) with different disk size setup, and let cloud-init to take care of increasing partition size, and file system resizing. Is it possible for centos/redhat? Any insights / suggestions are welcomed. Thanks. Gelen

NFS - No lista dos directorios especificos

Estimados. Actualmente, estoy tirando los backups a un server que comparte por NFS los directorios. Me encuentro con un problema, por ahora en dos servidores, en el cual no puedo ver directorios exportados. Server: LaCie 5Big Network (sistema propietario, sin acceso root. http://www.lacie.com/la/products/product.htm?id=10485) Cliente1: root@server [/home/cpbackuptmp]# uname -a Linux fq.dn.net.ar 2.6.18-348.1.1.el5.centos.plus #1 SMP Tue Jan 22 19:16:31 EST 2013 i686 athlon i386 GNU/Linux El problema, radica en que no puedo ver dos directorios exportados, dejandome medio sin terminar el directorio donde tiro los backups, por lo que estoy pasandolos via ftp Existe algun limite en NFS en cuanto a los directorios a exportar? Alguna otra idea por donde puedo buscar el problema/solucion? La verdad, que reconozco que tengo muy poco conocimento sobre trabajar con NFS. .... ------ root@server [/bkp]# showmount -e aaa.bbb.ccc.110 Export list for aaa.bbb.ccc.110: /shares/a * /shares/b * /shares/c * /shares/d * /shares/f * ... /shares/y * root@server [/bkp]# showmount -e aaa.bbb.ccc.110|wc -l 25 Deberia tener 27 directorios exportados. En el LaCie, los directorios fueron creados de la misma forma. De hecho, he creado otros para otros servidores, y se muestran. Tambien probe cambiando el nombre, eliminandolo y volviendo a crear, etc. Tambien reinicie el LaCie. Solucion bananera y argentina en mente: crear un solo directorio, adecuar todos los otros servers y realizar backup en los directorios especificos La verdad, mucho no me convence trabajar de esta manera, pero bue... Ambos servidores, son CentOS 5.9 final (el 3ro con esta version, lo monta perfectamente) Algun limite de la version? -- Diego - Yo no soy paranoico! (pero que me siguen, me siguen)

We're looking for an "appliance", like the link I give above, that we can manage the same way that we manage an HP printer, which does *NOT* require IE, and we can do with firefox, or probably even konqueror. At the very least, we want to use, say, wget, to d/l the videos. NOTHING RUNNING WINDOWS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Now, if I can calm myself down, have I made it clear what it is we're looking for? Kernel 2.6.32-358.14.1.el6 boot fail

Hello All: I installed 2.6.32-358.14.1.el6.centos.plus.x86_64 today and had some boot issues. After rebooting, the system locked immediately after the Asus motherboard logo. I thought at first that it was a hardware issue because it didn't appear that grub even loaded. I wasn't even able to get into the BIOS to change the boot order so it appeared that it was a hardware issue. I reset the MB BIOS and rebooted, which allowed me to get into the BIOS. Everything looked normal. I then tried to boot and the same issue. I repeated the BIOS clear and this time got to grub and let it load the latest kernel (2.6.32-358.14.1.el6). It hung again. I repeated the BIOS clear, go to the grub screen, selected the previous kernel and everything was fine. Once I got to the OS, I removed the "rhgb quiet" from grub.conf from the newest kernel. Rebooted. Hung again immediately after loading. The weird thing is that I couldn't just power down and get back to grub; I had to clear the BIOS again before I could even load grub to select the previous kernel. Anyone else experiencing issues with the latest kernel? Any idea why it seems to even corrupt the BIOS?

They have a very small version - the S9i - now that has 128GB of SSD for ~$700 that will handle 10 cameras. http://smartvue.com/products/index.html I have been running the S9 version for a little over a year with only a few issues. It's been very reliable and easy to use. It actually runs Fedora under the hood! Shawn

howto avoid Samba

Dear All, I'm replacing an older OpenSuse server with a new Centos6.4 server. So far that goes ok, except that the OpenSuse server is also a samba server with ldap connection. Since I replaced all but 2 machines in the building from Windows to Linux, I was hoping not to install Samba on the new server. ( And also because I can't get it to work on Centos. ) I saw a post on the mailinglist some time ago about Windows and Nfs, but find that Nfs is supported on Win7 Ultimate but not on Professional edition. I apologise if another way was mentioned in this post and I missed it. I googled and tried Omni-Nfs, but could not get a connection working. I installed TightVnc on Windows and that connects ok to the Centos server, but shared clipboard does not work. Can anyone point met to a useful solution to enable file sharing to Win7 Pro without Samba? Django 1.5 Upgrade

Anyone here using django on centos. On my Mac, running python 2.7, I upgraded from 1.4 to 1.5 by doing this: rm -rf /Library/Python/2.7/site-packages/django Followed by python setup.py install in the dir I untar-ed Django-1.5.1 to. This all worked fine. On a Centos system running python 2.6 I did: rm -rf /usr/lib/python2.6/site-packages/django followed by the setup.py install. My django app is working, and appears to be running 1.5, however anytime I use manage.py (for collectstatic or syncdb or test, for example) I get these messages: /usr/lib/python2.6/site-packages/django/core/management/__init__.py:465: DeprecationWarning: The 'execute_manager' function is deprecated, you likely need to update your 'manage.py'; please see the Django 1.4 release notes (https://docs.djangoproject.com/en/dev/releases/1.4/) DeprecationWarning) /usr/lib/python2.6/site-packages/django/core/management/__init__.py:409: DeprecationWarning: The 'setup_environ' function is deprecated, you likely need to update your 'manage.py'; please see the Django 1.4 release notes (https://docs.djangoproject.com/en/dev/releases/1.4/) DeprecationWarning) So it seems I still have some 1.4 stuff around. Hi, Following 2 vulnerabilities were detected in VA scan required for PCI compliance: 1. SSL Weak Cipher Suites Supported 2. SSL Medium Strength Cipher Suites Supported I'm using CentOS 5.8 with open ssl version "openssl-0.9.8e-22.el5_8.4". Any idea how to get rid of this? Thanks, Anumeha

Centos media repo

Kernel 3.10 and CentOS 5

I have a Centos 5 machine which I've just compiled the 3.10.4 kernel on (remembering to set CONFIG_SYSFS_DEPRECATED) because I needed new rtlwifi drivers for my rtl8192cu device. So far, so good. It seems to work. Except /proc/bus/usb doesn't exist anymore. USB_DEVICEFS has been removed. An older kernel (3.2.9) says Usbfs entries are files and not character devices; usbfs can't handle Access Control Lists (ACL) which are the default way to grant access to USB devices for untrusted users of a desktop system. The usbfs functionality is replaced by real device-nodes managed by udev. These nodes lived in /dev/bus/usb and are used by libusb. Has anyone got udev on C5 working with this new kernel so my USB devices show? (It's not causing me any real issues, other than "lsusb" nor working; just curious!) -- rgds Stephen

I installed CentOS 6.4 on a partition on my computer a few days ago, and i'm trying to equip it with the software i think i need. For example, i need, or i think i need, a couple of gnustep programs for uploading images from my digital camera (the programs being openapp and Camera.app). I imagine that these are old enough that they must surely exist in rpms somewhere. But i apparently don't know how to google around sufficiently well to locate a repository that contains them, or even that contains packages that i know exist as rpms. So that clearly means that i don't have enough repositories configured for use. So, i'd be grateful for any pointers to a list of CentOS-compatible repositories that i can put in the yum configuration (/etc/yum.repos.d or elsewhere). Hi I have centos 6.4 and installed percona 5.5... everything works fine, but in phpmyadmin (which is installed on the same box), i get this error: Your PHP MySQL library version 5.1.66 differs from your MySQL server version 5.5.32. What on Centos is wiping out my eth0 IP address every 5 minutes?

QUESTION: Why does my Centos 6.4 laptop keep wiping out my eth0 IP address? SUMMARY: a) I set the IP address of eth0 b) Everything works fine for 2 to 5 minutes c) Then, that eth0 IP address is (somehow?) wiped out I frustratingly repeat that abc process (over and over and over again) BACKGROUND: My home network has been working perfectly and there is no problem with my home network, nor my wlan0 WiFi access from my Centos laptop to that home broadband network. Inside the house, I never use the wired (eth0) NIC; but, I'm trying to set up a wired/wireless connection outside the house and that is where I'm running into this problem where Centos (automatically?) constantly and repeatedly wipes out the IP address I set on eth0. I can easily (constantly) change the IP address of the eth0 NIC back to what I want it to be; but that IP address only stays set for about 2 to 5 minutes; and then it wipes itself out (again & again). Why? How do I stop this? (All I want is for eth0 to *stay* at the IP address I set it to!) To give you more contextual detail, here's a typical sequence. SIMPLE BASELINE: Wireless NIC (wlan0) is turned off using a hardware switch on the outside of the laptop (so that only one NIC is in play). What seems to happen is that CentOS wipes out my IP address that I had set for eth0. Then I lose my eth0 IP address again. WHAT I WANT: When I set eth0 to an IP address, I want eth0 to *stay* at that IP address! My question: Q: Why does setting an eth0 IP address only last about 5 minutes on Centos? What am I doing wrong? What can I do to *keep* the IP address on eth0 that I set for eth0?

Hello All: I've narrowed an earlier issue down to a problem with kio_http. This one is much easier to reproduce: In a KDE session, open Konsole terminal. In the Konsole session, type a bogus web address. E.g.: http://magoo.ca Right click the link and select "Open Link" In a few seconds you should get multiple notifications on the desktop and several kio_http processes spawned. This notifications keeps on arriving until a "killall kio_http" is issued.

Interesting admin info: ipmitool

I've used ipmitool any number of times, but never for more than getting info, or setting the server name on a Dell LCD screen. However, I had a server screaming about intruder alert, intruder alert, er, "Chassis intrusion detected", and I thought there might be a way to shut it up (this after pulling the server and reseating the lid). A quick google found, on the first page, an 8 page document by Dell called "Managing Dell PowerEdge Servers Using IPMItool". It's clear, comprehensible, has links to the ipmitool project, and to the IPMI standard, which has documentation on calls and parameters. It also has some examples... including "How to turn off intrusion detected events".... Other than the device ID being different on my Penguin than on a Dell PE, it was completely accurate... and it worked. A bit scary - I didn't want to turn off everything, or brick the server, but it worked as advertised. So, push that onto your stack for the time when you need it, folks. mark

How does such long term support work?

I've had nothing but trouble with BSD/Linux over the past year or so. I've been on Centos 6.4 for about a half day now and I am loving it. I am just wondering though, how does a 7 year support cycle work? I see that there is libreoffice which is kinda new. Is this because open office is under oracle's influence? I am on gnome 2 right now, will I wake up one day in the next 7 years to gnome 3 ? I really don't want to. Will I just have gnome 2 + bug fixes? If so how does the community do this if the gnome people drop support for gnome 2. Thanks-Patrick

How to know hardware RAID failure

Hi, We have on an old Dell 2850 with 4 SCSI drives, where we put a Hardware RAID5 on 3 disks and left 1 as spare. I dont remember exactly, but the RAID was setup in the BIOS, and when installing CentOS6, I just saw "1 drive". If it was software RAID, disk failure could be seen in /proc/mdastat, and I could simulate failure with mdadm. As far as it is hardware ATM, how, at least, to know the state of the RAID array? (syncing, healthy,...) Thank you. -- RMA.

Tomboy on F12 to Gnote on Centos

I'm trying to convert my Tomboy notes from an old F12 system to Gnote on this CentOS 6 system. What I have found buy googling so far: - Tomboy notes used to be stored in $HOME/.tomboy - Some Tomboy upgrade moved them to $HOME/.local/share/.tomboy - Gnote stores its notes in $HOME/.local/share/gnote - Gnote has a Tomboy note converter add-in My Tomboy notes are in /home/steve/.tomboy so I had the old Tomboy system. I have the Tomboy add-in installed in Gnote I have tried copying my notes from $HOME/.tomboy to $HOME/.local/share/gnote and I have also tried copying them to $HOME/.local/share/tomboy but in either case I don't see them in gnote. Do I have a directory name wrong or is there some action needed to start the conversion? Thanks, Steve

What does this Centos Network Manager error message mean

Here is the error message: http://i41.tinypic.com/2zz71bp.png Wireless Network Authentication Required Unlock Keyring: The application 'NetworkManager Applet' (/usr/bin/nm-applet) wants access to the default keyring, but it is locked. The funny thing is, (a) I've never seen this message before (in a year of using CentOS) (b) I am the system administrator but it won't take the root password (c) I don't even know 'what' a default keyring is in the first place (d) This only happened after I changed the SSID of my home network When I tried to connect to my home network with the new SSID, this message came up. Funny thing is that I never got past it, since it seems to want a password that isn't my user password nor my root password. I still connected to the network though. So, it's odd all around. In fact, it makes no sense to me. Q1: What password is it looking for anyway? (it's not root or the user) Q2: Why did it let me connect to the home network Note: If you get this, I am on the network even without typing whatever password that application seems to want.

Help with thread Centos 6.4 won't reboot on install

Newbie here. Need help with a thread that has about 25 posts. No replies in a few days. The thread is in software support for centos 6 and the subject of the thread is Centos 6.4 won't reboot on install. Have had limited success in getting a login screen but once I logout, I can't get back in again. It was mentioned in the thread that the problem is likely in Network Configuration. I have no GUI (gnome) no mouse, no terminal, and keyboard use only with Ctl+Alt+F2. Can login as root but have no luck getting the GUI to appear or to get a user login screen. Cpus_allowed_list issue in RHEL6.4

Hi All, I am using RHEL 6.4 on a Dell Server with 32 cores. But in the Cpus_allowed_list only 30 cores are available. Why is that? See the snippet from cat /proc/self/status: Cpus_allowed: 7fff7fff Cpus_allowed_list: 0-14,16-30 The allowed list is same for the init process as well (see below). I didn't see this issue, in RHEL 6.2. Why is that? rpmbuild environment CentOS5 vs CentOS6

On CentOS5 I was used to create a simple spec file where at the end I'll declare files and directories I wan't to package: --< Snip >-- %files %dir /opt/myapp %dir /opt/myapp/bin %dir /opt/myapp/etc /opt/myapp/bin/exec01 /opt/myapp/etc/myapp.conf ---- I'll copy the file in /usr/src/redhat/SPECS and run "rpmbuild -bb myapp.spec". On CentOS6 rpm-build package no longer creates the /usr/src/redhat/... directory tree. I followed the CentOS6 Wiki instructions to setup my rpmbuild environment for a regular user. When I try to build the package on CentOS6 I'm getting this error for every single file and directory: File not found: /home/peter/rpmbuild/BUILDROOT/myapp-5.2-1el6.x86_64/opt/myapp/bin/exec01 I tried to override buildroot: rpmbuild -bb --define="buildroot /" myapp.spec error: %{buildroot} can not be "/" As a workaround I can manually create /home/peter/rpmbuild/BUILDROOT/myapp-5.2-1el6.x86_64/ and copy all my file in there but that's a lot of extra work. Is there a way to get the same functionality on CentOS6 where rpmbuild will collect the files from the main / directory and build the rpm package? Thank you, -- Peter

NFS not exporting filesystem ACLs

Hi. I have a test system in an lab I have copied over the /etc/sysconfig/nfs and /etc/exports from productions all the same services are running. But in the test environment the client mounts the nfs exports but the file system ACLs are not visible , what have I missed ? I have stopped the firewall on the server and that didn't help. Filesystem acls are enabled in fstab for the file system with the exports on it. We are using nfs v3 and it's configured on the server and in the mounts on the client. Thanks Greg

How often is kernel "touching" swap partition?

Hello, I am going to buy new laptop with two drives, one SSD and one HDD and I want to place swap partition on HDD which will be most time unused and therefore spinned down. Problem is, that I don't know, if or how often is kernel touching swap space even if there is lot of free memory and thus spinning HDD up. Thank you in advance

Hi Guys, My google foo is failing me this afternoon. Just configuring a new C6 install. I know there are SELinux alerts happening, eg: I know I need to enable named to write to the local .jnl file as part of dynamic DNS, but sealert -b is not listing any alerts. I can see raw audit messages. Is there some daemon I have forgotten to start or install? Quite a few times a day, both the latest Pan & Firefox available in standard CentOS repositories elicit what (now) appears to be a CentOS request to install fonts, e.g.: http://i39.tinypic.com/2i7qm2p.png This latest message says: Pan newsreader wants to install fonts - Thai - Cherokee At first I had thought it was Pan and Firefox causing these messages, but I was just told it's actually CentOS which is making these requests. Hence, I ask: Q: How do I debug why these requests are being made? And, more importantly: Q: How do I prevent these messages from popping up?

HPN-SSH performance optimization?

Hi. I wonder what is a current position on HPN-SSH patch for OpenSSH is? I have seen a progress was made, so I was wondering if that patch is safe enough and if anyone is building it? Maybe separate package to accept connections to special port for local network (without NFS/Samba)? It is supposed to provide up to 20x more speed over ssh. What does this error mean?

Hello everyone, It took a few reboots after installing the latest kernel (.14) to come back up. After it did, I saw this: WARNING: Kernel Errors Present nForce2_smbus 0000:00:0a.1: Error probing SMB1. Bad video card? my Nvidia has been working fine. No on-screen problems/issues noted. Question about Red Hat beta

Does CentOS get an early version of a beta release from Red Hat or not? I assume select hardware vendors get early access but I didn't know who else. Thanks, Joe
