So I d/l gqview from where I found the rpm, and installed it. It didn't show in my kde menu, so I did something *really* dumb: I ran the kde menu updater. Now I can't lock my screen. Nothing at all happens. Nothing shows in .xsession-errors, nothing shows in /var/log/messages. I restored all of .kde/share from last night's backup... and the screensaver still doesn't go, and leave->lock screen still doesn't work... *and* gqview is still in my menu, which means that it's stored *somewhere*. I even reinstalled kde, and kde-settings, and some libs, and *still* no screensaver, and gqview's still on my menu. It's got to have been changed somewhere.... Any clues? mark

LSI MegaRAID experience...

Hey, anyone using an LSI MegaRAID experienced "disappearing drives"...? We installed 6 new C6 servers, each with a Supermicro SMC2108 (LSI MegaRAID) controllers and 3 PX-128M5Pro SSDs ( RAID1 + hostswap). 2 weeks (and almost no activity on it, since not in production, apart from installation) later, megacli sees (based on the slot numbers): - on one server: only the 2nd disk of the RAID + the ex-hotswap brought online. NO sign of the first disk, no error message, it just "disapeared"... - on another server: apparently lost 1 of the 2 RAID1 disks and then the second disk of the RAID1... Now I can only see the spare brought online, so lonely... Is it "normal" for megacli to "hide" failed disks? Controller's firmware is the latest. SSDs's firmware are not... will try to flash them. BTW, any tips to flash them through the RAID controller instead of having to remove them all and connect them to a SATA controller...? This is a bit scary... Thx, JD

I took your suggestion and turned my (ill advised) sudoers bash script into an expect script! It works a lot better this way and is more secure. Because I'm not trying to store a password in a script (which I recognize as a bad idea anyway, I I think I've learned my lesson here). It really works well. But the only thing I'm still trying to figure out is how to put a if statement in there based on success of the last command ($?) before it'll move the new sudoers file in place. I'm verifying it with visudo before attempting to make the move. I'd like to make the final move based on the success/failure of that. I didn't keep the email from Ljubomir, so for those of you threading the list on mutt, this will mess up the headers--please accept my apologies. I don't know why I never looked for mtpfs to compile on CentOS--after the link Ljubomir gave, I just downloaded it and compilation was trivial. I think I was always looking for simple-mtpfs, but honestly, I don't remember. Maybe I just never thought of it. At any rate, even with older CentOS libmtp packages, installing mtpfs to /usr/local allows me to mount my S-III. I tried both with and without the udev rules suggested in the link, and it doesn't seem to make a difference. The thing that is essential for me is to run mtp-detect after plugging in the phone. Otherwise, mtpfs will mount the phone, but nothing will show in the directories. If I first run mtp-detect, (though I may have to run it a couple of times before it takes--no apparent link to USB port, and I did make sure phone was unlocked when plugged in) and then mount it with mtpfs, it's fine and works as it does in most other systems. (My way of using is command line, I mount it, usually on /mnt, then with root privilege add or remove files). This was with the phone set to mtp, NOT set to camera. Filesystem missing from computer:///

Hi Does anyone know what exactly controls which filesystems are listed when opening Computer (URL computer:///) in the File Browser? I have a system disk with 4 different data partitions, but only 3 of them show up in the list. The "missing" one can, however, be mounted just fine from the command line, and it's also included in /dev/disk/by-label. It has an NTFS file system, but so do two of three that do get listed. (I've installed "ntfs-3g" to be able to access them.) Any idea what's going on? sudo add user script

Hello list, I took another stab at finding a way to add a sudo user remotely and it gets you most of the way there. If you execute the script as root it works beautifully and does just what you want. Which is add the user to the group and gives that user group rights to certain commands. But if you execute it as a user who only has sudo access to the /etc/sudoers file it errors out. cloud:~] bluethundr% ./add_sudo.sh reverse mapping checking getaddrinfo for $host failed - POSSIBLE BREAK-IN ATTEMPT! The latest and greatest driver for AMD/ATI FirePro 3D cards (I use the V7900) now works with the X.Org version used by CentOS 6.4. Previous versions only worked on 6.3 and earlier, requiring a rollback of X11 and Mesa RPMs. That's not longer necessary. Everything seems to work with the 12.104.2 driver. Gé -- -- Gė

How to get Centos to recognize a Motorola RAZR V3 as a USB device?

I have a mini-USB cable, but simply connecting a Motorola RAZR to a Linux (Centos 6) PC to download stored pictures doesn't work, at least not automatically. Any idea what I need to do to get Centos to recognize that a Motorola RAZR V3 is plugged in as a USB device? I need to upgrade a bunch of centos 5 servers to 6.x in the near future, mostly keeping the same connectivity and functionality. Are there any tools that will examine a running 5.x box and produce the appropriate /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules (etc). to make the same box come up with the same interface names with the same IPs it had before? -- Les Mikesell lesmikesell(a)gmail.com

Ok, I give up. After the last month or so, gwenview takes literally five minutes or so to come up, gagging because I have nepomuk turned off in kde. Today, it just will not come up at all, even trying gwenview pic.jpg. Are there any other ->light weight<- image viewers in the standard repositories, including epel? I DO NOT WANT OR NEED a "semantic desktop" (aka bloat, suitable for people who have no knowledge and don't want any of COMPUTERS (who perhaps should get a Mac)). Note that I saw an old post from aurelian (sp?) on their website, that nepomuk wasn't for "you if you're comfortable with directories and files", which sounds like me.* So, something that is NOT "the k3wl3st thing since sliced bread", not the "LATEST THING", but just an fscking image viewer? Is kuickshow still around (and if so, in what package)? mark, annoyed * As opposed to the folks who REALLY BELIEVE in icons... as in, I've seen desktops that couldn't hold all the icons, and you had to scroll. *So* much more user-friendly than lists and folders....

Is there a rpm command to find the package that created a particular user or particular group?

Given a particular user or particular group, is there a rpm command that returns what package created that particular user or particular group? Analogous to `rpm -q --whatprovides /etc/security/limits.conf` returns the package "pam". Is there an rpm command that returns what package generated a particular user? Most of us already know that the httpd package is associated with the user apache. But there are passwd and group entries that i would like to verify and want to know exactly how they got on my system. Further i would like to know which the security implications of adding another group to a user account. Something like the following command: `rpm --query --user apache` would return "httpd" `rpm --query --group pulse-access` might return pulseaudio

Hello: I'm trying to track down a kio_http problem using CentOS 6.4 with KDE. This causes multiple kio_http procs to spawn and lots of notifications. Several steps are needed: Create a foo.html with an href foo.html <html><head>Test</head><body><a href=http://ovh.com>http://ovh.com</a></body></html> [^] Use html2ps then ps2pdf to create a PDF document html2ps foo.html>foo.ps ps2pdf foo.ps okular foo.pdf Using the KDE desktop, open the PDF in Okular then click the click. Immediately there are desktop notifications that website was contacted and waiting for reply. A 'ps -ef' shows man kio_http processes being spawned. I'm not able to reproduce on all random websites, but the ovh.com always does so. This link was found in the latest Linux Journal so others may inadvertently cause this.

Ok... digging still more into this problem that I'm *still* fighting, using mplayer and a higher debug level, what I *think* the significant message is (this is just one example line): libv4lconvert: Error decompressing JPEG: fill_nbits error: need 5 more bits fps = 15.626953, interval = 0.096001, a_skew = 0.000000, corr_skew = 0.000000 vcnt = 1, acnt = 0 Which seems to indicate that for some reason, on *some* hardware, libv4lconvert is doing something wrong that it did correctly in the last kernel. Is anyone using an older USB webcam that can look at this issue? I can't really test it on our RHEL box (well, I suppose I could try) to put in a ticket with them. This is CentOS 6.4, and it's current, 2.6.32-358.11.1.el6.x86_64 #1 SMP kernel. mark And in other news, Linus renames the current release, 3.11 kernel, Linux for Workgroups (for real)....

Server dies after kernel upgrade

I am running a server with CentOS release 6.4 (Final) and the kernel version of 2.6.32-279.19.1.el6.x86_64 and everything looks ok, but when I do a yum update on the kernel to update it to a newer version "2.6.32-358.11.1.el6". It will not restart after the required reboot. It will start to load until the task bar at the bottom gets to the end than it stops loading I have been patient with it unless it requires more time to start but after 10min it was still just sitting at the task bar. This is a VM machine so I just revert to a previous snapshot, but what should I be looking for that would cause this, and how should I fix it? Thanks, Chris

It is the standard CentOS kernel with one added patch ( https://bugzilla.redhat.com/attachment.cgi?id=767364) This kernel needs to be tested for fitness by each user before being placed in production. Hi All. In curl manual: --ciphers -> "(SSL) Specifies which ciphers to use in the connection. The list of ciphers must specify valid ciphers. Read up on SSL cipher list details on this URL:http://www.openssl.org/docs/apps/ciphers.html" In openssl: http://www.openssl.org/docs/apps/ciphers.html#CIPHER_SUITE_NAMES there are names such as "SSL_RSA_WITH_RC4_128_SHA RC4-SHA" but curl --ciphers RC4-SHA https://xxx.yyy curl: (59) Unknown cipher in list: RC4-SHA the same for --ciphers SSL_RSA_WITH_RC4_128_SHA the same. But for: curl --ciphers rsa_rc4_128_sha https://xxx.yyy the command works. Can you tell how to map strings from openssl to curl's format? SpamAssassin under CentOS-6.4

I wonder if anyone is actually running SpamAssassin with Postfix/Amavisd-new under CentOS-6.4 . I have followed the instructions in <http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/Amavisd> but as far as I can see SpamAssassin is not working. I should say that I do not understand from this document what is meant to happen to spam. I understand that a Spam header is added, but what actually happens to email considered to be spam? Hello, booting starts /etc/init.d/nfslock. today, rpc.statd used port 873. later starting xinetd finds port used and disabled rsync daemon. So its more or less a lucky break, to boot CentOS and have rsync running? In /etc/rc3.d is S14nfslock S56xinetd so by design xinetd starts always after nfslock!!!! Best regards -- Viele Grüße i.V. VZFS issues

Hello listmates, Normally whenever I needed to grab the contents of a disk/partition in its entirety I would just use dd to pipe it wherever I wanted and that would just work. Runaway rpm process?

CentOS-6.4_x86_64 I have a KVM virtual machine (several actually) which acts as a warm spare for another kvm instance running on a different physical host. Each hour it backs up the live system using rsync. This morning I discovered that the backup instance was running at 99% utilisation and that the process consuming the entire virtual cpu was this: sh -c rpm -q -a --queryformat "%{NAME}\n%{VERSION}-%{RELEASE}\n%{EPOCH}\n%{GROUP}\n%{SUMMARY}\n\n" 2>/dev/null In fact there were two identical instances of these processes, one the parent of the other. The vm instance does not have access to the internet as its physical host is connected to the physical host of the live kvm using a x-over patch cable. Where is this process started from? CentOS 6.4 with VMWare Fusion on MBA 2013

Hello, is anybody successfully using CentOS 6.4 with VMWare Fusion 5 on a Macbook? I have tried moving a CentOS 6.4 VM from VMWare Workstation on Win 7 (where it works well) to VMWare Fusion on a Macbook Air (2013) and when it boots it says: Detected CPU family 6 model 69 unsupported hardware device After that a progress bar is displayed at the bottom and "CentOS 6.4" on the right bottom. problems with apache downgrade

There was an upgrade on a couple of our servers yesterday, mid-afternoon our time, of httpd and httpd-devel, and suddenly SiteMinder (bleah) stopped working correctly, and is now pegging a cpu, according to top. So, as a last resort, I tried downgrading both of them. When I did so, the server that uses ssl *erased* mod-ssl, not downgrading it, and I'll have to find where I can get the previous version tomorrow... but that shouldn't happen, I should think. Downgrade *should* get everything, unless it's brand new, and this isn't. mark

Slow TCP performance from Win2k8R2 guests under Linux KVM

Would anyone be so kind as to test the performance of TCP streams on Windows 2k8R2 guests of KVM virt servers? virtio-win-1.6.3 was published to address a problem described as "low performance" on Win2k8 guests. Actual performance was not recorded in the bug report. On my KVM servers, Windows 2k8R2 guests are able to send data at less than 4Mbps. I test this by using netcat on Windows and piping a file to its input. The receiving end of the transfer is an un-virtualized CentOS system. Transfer rate is measured by selecting the stream in iptraf while it is active. UDP transfers, such as by CIFS, will send data at around 400Mbps. TCP transfers from Windows 2012 or Windows 8 are not similarly affected. The same driver for Win2k8 was published by Red Hat in virtio-win 1.6.3, 1.6.4, and 1.6.5. postfix as default MTA

I noticed when CentOS 6 came out that RHEL had moved to postfix vice sendmail as the default MTA. I had never heard the rationale given, it always sat on the back burner, but I was reminded of the question the other day when I was dealing with a related topic. I don't want to get into a pissing contest about how one MTA is obviously better than the other, nor why others think that I should prefer one over the other, but I *would* like to know what rational (if any) RedHat gave on the move. My google-fu hasn't been successful in finding it and I didn't see anything in the CentOS archives on the topic. Does anyone remember the reasoning, if given? In particular, I'm wondering if it was due to integration with any other specific subsystem or software product. Devin

I *think* the problem I've been having with the gspca_zc3xx video drivers isn't directly that driver. One of my users, on one of the two servers that broke, started having continuing crashes from where he enabled mediawiki to server thumbnails for some images. That crash, according to the [abrt] full crash report, is from /usr/bin/convert, and /var/log/messages tells me kernel: convert[1880]: segfault at 7f948fbabfe8 ip 00007f949bb97d49 sp 00007f948fbabff0 error 6 in libc-2.12.so[7f949bb20000+18a000] So, it appears to me that there was some change in either convert, or libc, that only gets hit in very, very specific cases, which I suspect has to do with the chipset. In my case, it hits a Dell PowerEdge R720, and a Penguin 1650A. Now, I find this weird, as the former is a Xeon, and the latter an older Opteron, but I can't figure out any other possible cause, since I have no problem at all with an older Penguin, with a Xeon, and one I moved the camera to, a Dell PE R415, running an Opteron. httpd ssl problems

Not much of a noob, but I will try. I just configured httpd and installed mod_ssl and got my certificate from GoDaddy and put them on the server with ssl.conf pointing at them. I am getting this error: SSLCertificateFile: file '/etc/pki/tls/certs/enmu.edu.crt' does not exist or is empty It's a cute error. I have checked several times for misspellings, looked at the enmu.edu.crt file (looks like a cert to me) and I can certify that it is not empty and it most certainly exists. Want some proof? Here... Disabling user switching in CentOS 6

Installing CentOS 6 on a lab full of workstations, and I want to disable fast user switching. With CentOS 5, I simply made sure that the "user_switch_enabled" entry in /etc/gconf/schemas/gnome-screensaver.schemas was set to false. However, that doesn't work with CentOS 6. I've found various proposed solutions to this issue, such as gconftool-2 --direct --config-source xml:readwrite:/etc/gconf/gconf.xml.mandatory \ --type bool --set "/apps/gnome-screensaver/user_switch_enabled" "false" gconftool-2 --direct --config-source xml:readwrite:/etc/gconf/gconf.xml.mandatory \ --type bool --set "/desktop/gnome/lockdown/disable_user_switching" "true" neither of which work, either. Does anyone know the proper way to disable user switching with CentOS 6? Understanding RPM trigger scripts?

I'm trying to get my head around RPM trigger scripts - but currently getting very confused ... I have a custom RPM which has in its spec file a '%triggerin' script for the 'kernel' RPM - i.e. a script that I want to run when the kernel RPM is upgraded/installed This works OK - once my custom RPM is installed, if the kernel is subsequently upgraded/installed, my trigger script is run However, the same trigger script is also run when I upgrade my custom RPM - which I don't want - and so far, I can't find a reliable way of making sure it isn't run in this case. The more I search for an answer, the more I get confused :-) I know this is a bit off-topic and obscure, but does anyone know how to make sure such a trigger script is only run when the RPM that triggers it is upgraded/installed - and not when the RPM that contains the trigger script is upgraded? Does anyone know of a reliable site to d/l a tarball of gspca? *NOTHING* I've tried works on those two servers, suggesting to me that there's some weird bug in the driver that's in the kernel. They remain, as I mentioned, about the top 15% ok, and the rest green screen (which I've googled to find other folks, years ago, complaining about), so the only thing left I can think of is to try to build the driver myself. mark

change sudoers remotely

hello list, I've been asked to give someone sudo rights across an entire environment without the benefit of something like puppet or chef or cfengine et al. What I've come up with so far is this: ssh -t miaprbicsra04v sudo -S /bin/echo "rsherman ALL=$ALL$ NOPASSWD: /sbin/service /bin/rm /usr/bin/du /bin/df" >> sudo tee /etc/sudoers Right now that's just to one host, but I plan on substituting a list of hosts once I get farther along. CentOS 6.4 login after reboot after apcupsd shutdown - shows POWER FAILURE

Hi list, just putting a new server through its automatic shutdown triggered by the UPS / apcupsd. All worked faultlessly, including powering up when power came back on to the UPS. So then I go to log in and get "POWER FAILURE" followed by "Authentication failure" - this is on the console via SSH I just get "POWER FAILURE" and the ssh connection drops. So I guess the, log everyone out and stop further logins instruction is still lurking around somewhere. How do I regain control of my server?? Does this mean I need to boot with a rescue disk and edit some file somewhere?? How do I prevent this re-occurring, after a perfect shutdown and restart, only to get stymied here. Google has lots of help for dealing with various corruptions due to power failure - not the case here, the POST, grub, init restart all look just fine. TIA

I realize this is (mostly) off topic, but I'm befuddled as to *how* one can post to the Gmane Pan Users' group (gmane.comp.gnome.apps.pan.user) using any nntp USENET client (e.g., Pan, on Centos). I'm already subscribed (by having sent an email to pan-users(a)nongnu.org) but I just want that USENET group to work like *this* USENET group, where I can post using a server:port login:password combination such as we use here: Server: news.gmane.org Port: 119 Login: blank Password: blank User: Rock I've looked here (http://dir.gmane.org/gmane.comp.gnome.apps.pan.user) and if the answer is there, I don't see it (maybe I missed it?). My basic question is so simply I'm shocked I'm having to ask it (of the wrong group even) ... which is ... the following: Q: How on earth is one supposed to post to the Gmane Pan users using an nntp client (which requires a server name and port & login/password)?

I'm trying to install spamassassin on a postfix/dovecot server, running CentOS-6.4, following the instructions at <http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/Amavisd>. Having difficulty exporting display

Hello, This is my issue, my remote machine (CentOS 6.3, hosted in Azure windows environment) has an application that I need to test on my local box (CentOS 6.4, a laptop behind a router). Now, this is what I'm doing and the issue that I'm encountering: Local: $ xhost + $ ssh -X someusername(a)somehostname.net -p 49283 Remote: $ export DISPLAY=192.168.1.6:0.0 $ xclock ... and nothing, it just sits there and no xclock shows up :( . I'm fairly convinced that this is due to my router, but I don't know how to deal with it. Any ideas? Am I way off in my guess?

fstab, unusual behavior of "missing UUID"

I have the following as the last line of my /etc/fstab file on a computer running CentOS6.4.. UUID=3b550884-8d05-41a5-a205-17b6d7269dd1 /mnt ext3 rw,suid,dev,exec,noauto,nouser,async 0 2 The UUID refers to an ext3 partition of a removable USB drive. If the USB drive is not plugged into the computer the computer will not boot. It seems that this is the incorrect behavior since "noauto" means there is nothing to mount. I noticed this situation since an almost identical /etc/fstab on a Fedora 18 computer will boot without the USB drive being plugged in. The reason this is important to me is that I want to plug my USB drive into a running computer and then mount it with "# mount /mnt" so I can do backups. Thank you, Joe Hesse

Windows 2008 R2 on KVM

Hi All, I have a KVM machine with CentOS 6.4 (64bit), I have a Linux guest running well on this, I created a Windows 2008 R2 guest and once I start it, after sometime all the host memory get exhausted and both the guests (linux+win) killed. Host has 32 GB RAM, 8 GB is allocated to Linux guest and 8 GB to Windows. Any idea? anyone experienced similar issue?

I've been following the instrunctions in <http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/Amavisd> for installing Amavisd, Clamav and SpamAssassin on top of postfix/dovecot . Dovecot is working fine, but I want to deal with spam email. (I am using sendmail/dovecot with procmail and spamassassin on another server, but decided to go over to postfix on this server when I saw it is now the CentOS default.) odd inconsistency with nfs

I'm having an interesting/odd problem with nfs (I think). We recently (Monday/Tuesday) upgraded our file server from an ancient redhat 7.3 system to a shiny new centos 6.4 system. We don't see any issues between the other centos boxes, but things get a bit weird when we start mounting on the old solaris clients. The initial symptom was that the 'tab complete' wasn't working, and then we noticed that typing 'ls *' in the mounted directory was bombing. I tried forcing the mounting back to nfs3 but it's not consistent. I've set up two boxes as servers and one of the solaris boxes is my client. Each server has two shares that are mounted on the client. Of those four, one of them works properly and the other three do not. I've spent most of the day trying to debug this and I cannot for the life of me tell why one share works and the rest don't. Nothing seems to be special about that share versus the rest. gspca - running out of ideas

For video capture from a USB camera, as near as I can tell, there's a problem with the driver gspca_zc3xx with the latest update to the kernel. All our cameras were working fine before the update to 2.6.32-358.11.1; since, two cameras, both on fairly new Dell servers are screwed. Meanwhile, on some older servers, same update, no problems. Of the two bad ones, one's got AMD, and the other Intel Xeons. Without any changes to the configuration file, I get about 10% to 15% at the top ok, and everything below it is green. Googling, I find other folks have had green screens over the years, so it's not just some color setting on my workstation. By adding /usr/lib64/libvdpau.so.1 to the LD_PRELOAD in /etc/init.d/motion, I get the rest of the screen on the Intel box looking like it works, but there's a slight yellowish tinge to the rest of the screen, and when I watched what we see using mplayer tv:// -tv driver=v4l2:device=/dev/video0 not only do I see the same, but we had someone walk in view of the camera... and *only* that top little bit shows the motion; the other 80% or 85% shows only what's there, and *not* the rest of the person. I'd gone through doing an insmod ...gspca_zc3xx with force_sensor option, and the only one that works is the same one it chooses itself if I just do a modprobe. Anyone have any ideas? I *really* can't reboot either of these servers so as to bring them up with the previous kernel, since they're important. mark

sda and sdb reverse order with an external USB drive

Hello I am using 64 bit CentOS 6.4 on an i7 laptop with one sata drive and a CD drive. I installed CentOS by manually partitioning sda as: sda1 as /boot, sda2 as swap, sda3 as /. The booted system works great. When I insert an external USB drive, formatted as ext3, the hard drive on the laptop and the USB drive are either sda or sdb, depending upon the order on which I insert the USB drive and boot the system. Please see the two mount commands below for each of these situations. This seems to work in either order except for the fact that I don't want my USB drive to automount. What I want is that after I insert the USB drive in a running system and wait 15 seconds, I want to mount the USB drive with the command "# mount /mnt". To accomplish this I added a line to /etc/fstab but it didn't work. When I uncomment the last line in fstab (see below) the computer hangs and doesn't boot. I was successful with this strategy on a similar laptop with Fedora 18 but not my current one. Java/Solr - Could not reserve enough space for object heap.

Hi All. # cat /etc/redhat-release CentOS release 6.2 (Final) # uname -r 2.6.32-220.17.1.el6.centos.plus.x86_64 # rpm -qa | grep solr apache-solr-3.5.0-1.5... I have a solr installation which is invoked: /usr/bin/java -Xms25g -Xmx25g -DSTOP.PORT=8079 -DSTOP.KEY=mustard -Dsolr.solr.home=multicore -jar start.jar After start/when the java process is running: # free -m total used free shared buffers cached Mem: 32093 23975 8118 0 189 5736 -/+ buffers/cache: 18049 14043 Swap: 4095 22 4073 So the machine has 32GB of RAM, and java process needs 25GB to start. When I make a restart the java process dies and in log: Jul 4 08:17:27 test.local solr: Error occurred during initialization of VM Jul 4 08:17:27 test.local solr: Could not reserve enough space for object heap Jul 4 08:17:27 test.local solr: [FAILED] Then a second restart is ok, the process starts and solr is responding. Have you had such problems? As I think during stop jvm gives back the memory to the operating system and then during start is requesting 25GB (can there be a lag in this process?). Centos 6.4 and Virtualbox

I'm trying to install Centos 6.4 under Virtualbox on a Mac running Lion. I downloaded the 2 iso DVD files and set Virtualbox to boot from DVD 1 When I start the vm it puts out a lot of messages then asks me what kind of install I want to do. I select the basic install and it tells me it found the media ( the iso DVD file I downloaded) puts out a message about the anaconda ( I think) install starting then goes to a screen with the Centos 6 logo and appears to do nothing. No more messages appear. Should I be using the minimal iso install file? I have installed Windows XP, 7 and 8 under Virtualbox and they all work. I also installed Ubuntu but didn't like it so I removed it and thought I would try Centos Does anyone know what might be going on and how to get it working? trouble with crash utility

Best practices to setup XEN running on CentOS 6.4

Hi everyone, I'm looking for advice on the best way to setup the guest disks on a single-server XEN system running on a Centos 6.4 fresh minimal install as the dom0. I currently have a system running a traditional VHD disk image for each guest but I'm having disk I/O difficulties and I am looking to optimize it the best way I can. The host disks are two classic 500GB SATA-III drives running in software RAID. My question is what is the best way to set this type of system up? Using the VHD disks or a dedicated LVM partition? Ideally the host will run a few VM's, development, MySQL/Memcached, and Web Server utilities. My current planned disk layout is to have a host system running a raid'd root 20GB partition, leaving the rest for VM's. Should the remaining block be a complete LVM device and carve that up for VM's, or is there a better "accepted practice" for a setup like this? Thanks

Weird Okular/KDE error - thousand procs spawned

Hello all: I'm trying to troubleshoot a strange and repeatable error and not sure where to log the bug report. I subscribe to Linux Journal and download their PDF. The DLJ230.pdf opens in the Okular PDF reader from Konqueror. If I scroll down to the ad for some colo site (www.ovh.com) and click the right side of the page, I immediately start getting hundreds of alerts on the desktop. These all say: www.ovh.com contacted. Waiting for reply... Source: http://www.ovh.com/us/index.html They appear at the rate of about one per second. Adding browsers

Recently, I put CentOS 6.4 on one of the four PCs I keep behind a KVM switch. I like it a whole lot in most ways, but Fedora has spoiled me : I install almost every browser I can, and generally keep half a dozen or more open, mostly with several tens of tabs open. Iow, I use browsers as I used to use books, back in the Carboniferous when I had a desk in the stacks. Are there ways a subtechnoid can run Arora, Dillo, Epiphany, Konqueror, Midori, Kazehakase, Rekonq, Opera, and Pan on this CentOS -- without falling into the bad old pit of dependency hell? -- Beartooth Staffwright, Neo-Redneck Not Quite Clueless Power User Remember I have precious (very precious!) little idea where up is.

Centos 6.4, bnx2 in promiscuous mode does not see packets

Hi, I hope someone can help me, I cannot seem to get a system's ethernet interface to correctly work in promiscuous mode... I have a Centos 6.4 system with 2 bnx2 interfaces on it. I have set up eth1 in promiscuous mode and am sending traffic to it using the port mirroring configuration on a Nortel 3510-24T switch. The switch reports that it is sending a fair amount of traffic to the mirror port. Something told me to put the original Packages file back where it was, I did, and now yum works again. And the just-upgraded firefox works too. Thanks to you and everyone else who responded. I have to say, I still don't know what caused the problem in the first place. But sometimes things just have to be a mystery.

Dovecot SLOW with sssd in centos 6

Hello, I have a big performance problem with a mail server using dovecot and authenticating users via ldap. The architecture of the machine is a local ldap and mysql server, they are used by dovecot for authenticating the mail users. If i use pam_sss the mail server has about 1/8 - 1/10 the performances it has if i use the pam_ldap. Even doing a 'time ls -l' on the mail tree (there are about 3000 ldap users in that directory) it is very very slow, the first time I try to do it after a reboot, it takes about 6 minutes with sssd, and about 8 seconds with ldap. Since I know sssd is recommended, anyone knows that there is anything in configuration I can try to increase the speed, avoiding me to use the old pam_ldap module? thanks in advance, Fabio Ferrari

Yum hangs while doing update

About thirty minutes ago I started an update. Everything downloaded fine. But when it came to "Running Transaction", it hung: .... Running rpm_check_debug Running Transaction Test Finished Transaction Test Transaction Test Succeeded Running Transaction Updating : xulrunner 1/18 And there it sits still. There's plenty of disk space. The load on the CPU is under 1.0. There is some disk activity, but no way so much as to cause anything to hang and no major writing related to yum. Disk reads are just about null, except just now when I grep'ed for something to make sure that the disk could be read. I'm not using even half of the available RAM. Suffice it to say, everyone on this list knows their name, and they're not exactly a small VAR. Your assumptions are unfounded. Like at most companies, the purchasing folks are as far removed from the actual server operations/build folks that there's a complete disconnect anyway... I could talk to the wall as well as I could specify a vendor. HP plays games with vendors and customers, they just deserve to lose them. I have better things to do with my time than tattle-tale on a VAR who's not keeping up on the metric ton of horsepucky coming from HP on what aren't really even high-end servers. Hey, if they want to play hardware licensing games on a giant blade server, okay... no biggie. These are pizza boxes that are literally less than $1000/ea in quantity. Over-engineering them to garner an extra couple hundred bucks to turn on hard disks, is a game... a game by a company not interested or not paying attention to what customers actually use these for... commodity hardware built by a large brand name with the ability to show up the SAME DAY with replacement parts. That can't be blamed on the VAR. They have hundreds of other vendor's products to keep up with, too. These are the types of cheap servers that the admin has always just TURNED ON THE SERVER AND USED IT. It's a pizza box. It isn't a mid-range HP-UX machine. It definitely isn't a Sun box. The rest of your snotty response and assumptions about the business, have been summarily ignored. Mostly because... a) Hey, it's a sysadmin job and the company is what it is. I've now been through something like 15 companies in my fairly long career (if you want to call it that), since before any company on the planet was using Linux... and some are good, some are bad. It has nothing to do with my opinion of a dumb feature added to cheap pizza box servers. b) Attacking people by claiming their company is somehow bad on a public mailing list is a great way to have your resume' find the round file immediately as soon as anyone recognizes your name on it from the tech lists. Sheesh. c) You're boring me to death. Feel free to say you like the new HP licensing features of their commodity cheap hardware, or you don't. I don't care what you think of any particular company practice here, or our choice of VAR. I *suspect* the person who posted just got the same surprise we did the first time it happened. Here's the kind of stuff people do with pizza boxes... 1. Open box, throw away (oh, I forgot... need to be PC... "recycle") cardboard. 2. Install drives and check nothing got unseated in shipping. 3. Boot and install OS from server or media with automated scripts/etc. 4. Shove in rack at datacenter and let it soak for a couple of days for infant mortality. 5. Send traffic to it and make money with it. HP added: 2a. Go find paperwork from purchasing department or stuffed in one of the many boxes with a pile of new servers to find some stupid license key and type it into BIOS. It's a complete waste of time for such low-end hardware and how most people use it. You ... may enjoy the additional silly step designed to annoy and garner a couple hundred more bucks from you, at your pleasure. The rest of your misguided opinions, as I said, will be summarily ignored. My initial response to the thread was curt and to the point and covered why HP servers now do this, succinctly. And IMHO, accurately. I wish you good tidings, and may you always be the smartest person with the "Best l33t GOLD level VAR EVAR !!1!" LOL... (just a note: I remember when there were no such things as "service levels"... you bought a server, the company would send you caviar and roses and wipe your butt just because you called, because servers were EXPENSIVE... the world got rid of/over that, a LONG time ago... just repeat after me... commodity hardware... commodity hardware... commodity hardware... I'm not saying I LIKE it, but hey... virtual farms and what-not... no one needs a pizza box acting all uppity like it's important in the grand scheme of the data center these days... servers that need things typed into the BIOS to find their hard drives... are dumb. Yum errors

Hi, I have a machine that recently had some file system corruption. fsck was able repair the file system but I am getting the following error when I try to do yum update: [Errno 21] Is a directory: '/var/lib/yum/yumdb/e/2f883c08e3b596b66fcc19c6b4d73b11c9aaa43e-e2fsprogs-1.41.12-14.el6_4.2-x86_64/checksum_type' In searching Google, some suggested renaming the yumdb but that just results in a traceback when I run yum. There are some files in lost+found but I am not sure what the above file should look like and inode numbers are not useful to me. Anyone have an idea how to fix this without reloading the machine? Setting up dovecot under CentOS-6.4

I want to set up dovecot on a CentOS server. I did this before, some time ago, but it seems to have become much more complicated, involving postfix, amavisd-new and clamav (for spamassassin). What puzzles me is the role, if any, of procmail and .procmailrc in this new system.
