centos 6.4 samba password sync problem

I have a problem with unix-samba password sync. It just doesnt work, when i use smbpasswd it changes only samba password, and not the unix password. In logs i cant find any error about passwd. Samba ver is 3.6.9-151. Here is [global] in my smb.conf [global] workgroup = WORKGROUP security = user encrypt passwords = yes unix password sync = yes passwd program = /usr/bin/passwd %u passwd chat = *New password* %n\n *new password* %n\n *success* debug level = 100 passwd chat debug = yes

setxkbmap not accepting layout "de"

Hi all, when I try to use Xnest with setxkbmap to force a Germany keyboard layout, I get the error > Error loading new keyboard description The complete command I am using is > ssh -X -C -l $USER $HOST -n "Xnest :1 -ac -geometry 1440x850 -once > -query localhost & setxkbmap -layout de" I also tried with "setxkbmap de" in the end, but no difference. So this might have been the right syntax to set a different keyboard layout, but somehow it did not work - do I understand the error message right? There is no error or hint in the Xorg log file(s). Any hint or help is appreciated. Dirk

gspca and motion

We recently rebooted a lot of systems with the new kernel in 6.4, 2.6.32-358.11.1.el6.x86_64. Suddenly, we're having real problems with our cheap surveillance cameras in the "computer labs". What I see of video and jpg is only about 20%-25% of the top of the picture, and the rest is green. When the service starts, I see, in both dmesg and /var/log/messages, gspca: bandwidth not wide enough - trying again And they worked fine before. Anyone else seeing this, or have some thoughts on how I can attack the problem? The most recent post with this error I can find is from '10, and isn't really relevant. Oh, and at least one's on a Dell R420, I think, while another's on an old Penguin, an Altus 1300, I think, so it's not specific to one set of hardware. mark

CentOS 6 SFF motherboard or complete system

I am trying to assemble or purchase a set of CentOS 6 compatible SFF workstations, and am finding it incredibly frustrating to do so. hardware.redhat.com is so slow as to be useless and provides almost no information about each of the 1,300 or so products listed in their database; clicking through them one at a time is incredibly frustrating (and about half of them are discontinued or out of stock when I actually go looking for them, like the Intel DQ series motherboards I was interested in). Vendor web sites are almost no use; they trumpet their Windows 8 compatibility all over the site, but finding information about Linux compatibility is next to impossible. My requirements aren't overwhelming; an i7 processor, four memeory slots preferred, dual 24" (1920x1200) monitor capability, and dual ethernet (or an expansion slot for a second Ethernet card). Anyone have any advice on how to attack this these days? Server hangs after installing KVM

Hi, I just received a Supermicro server back from factory repair. Installed CentOS 6.3 x86_64 fresh from DVD (tried with 6.4, same result). Everything goes fine until i install Virtualization* yum groups. Virtualization is enabled in BIOS. Server boots, CentOS loads and i have even a login prompt. If i'm fast enough to enter login name and password, shell works for about 10 sec. Then, it seems to hang. Pressing CTRL-C seems to work as i see it on screen (CTRL-C text). I'm used to Xen in CentOS 5 where we can choose a non-Xen kernel at boot time. With CentOS 6 and KVM, i'm kinda lost! I Googled a lot and didn't find anything to disable KVM / select a a non-KVM kernel a boot up time. The server has been repaired but i'm not sure if there is still other problems that prevent KVM to work. I know that they installed the last BIOS version. I have other identical servers that works well with KVM. I tried to disable all i saw for virtualization support in BIOS, result is the same. I did memtest86 tests without problem. Here are the specs: Supermicro 6026T-3RF (mainboard X8DT3-S) BIOS 03/17/12 15:50:21 Ver 2.1 Xeon E5520 Kingston 12 Gig RAM (Triple Channel) LSI 9240-8i What should i do to debug this? Http tunnel via a http proxy to another http proxy server

Hi All, Is that possible create a http tunnel to remote http tunnel server via a middle http proxy? Here is my situation : My Company only allow http protocol and they created a http proxy server. So when we want to access internet we have to set the http proxy settings for the browser or application. Now I want to access outside without restrictions of http protocol and also not limited to 80 port. As they blocked the ssh, so the SSH reverse binding is not possible. So is that possible to create a http tunnel via the http proxy of my company and aim to my own server outside? Or there is any other good idea? Thank you very much. -- Thanks & Best Regards, Su Heng

I kicked out VMWare and their "Windoze" tools i hate (i know that now they offer a VM with command line tools). I'm not saying VMWare is not good though, it's just i hate their tools. On top of that, it can cost a lot of money. But they have the features! I moved to KVM and i'd say i like it a lot. I'm planning to test OpenStack. For storage, big names (3Par, Netapp, etc) offer nice things but it is rather expensive. I'm testing iSCSI servers with DRDB, STONITH, etc. Idea is to use commodity hardware and standard software. Nothing new and i'm not against commercial solution with support and all. It's just we try to offer affordable and open solutions.

15 min pause during boot - Setting up logical volume management

Hi all, I rebooted a server having a 20TB XFS volume under LVM and wait about 15 min to boot. It stays at; Setting up logical volume management For 15 min then proceeds to boot fine. During this time, I see the 14 disks of the 20TB volume flashing quickly as though being read. Nothing in my logs to indicate bad behavior. I am running the latest 6,4 kernel. Any one see this before? - aurf

If this is true, then it affects my school and my students. I like google-chrome and it works very well with google services. I was planning on using C6 for a long time. CentOS 6 guest OS does not detect reboot/shutdown signal from virt-manager

My setup is as follows: Host OS: Debian Wheezy amd64 stock kernel (3.2), virt-manager v0.9.1 Guest VMs: A bunch of Linux based servers - CentOS 6, Debian 6/7, Ubuntu 12.04 (all amd64 with stock kernel). All of them defined using virt-manager GUI interface. >From the virt-manager, I am able to shutdown/reboot the Debian and Ubuntu guest OSs but not the CentOS 6 guests. For the CentOS 6 guests, I have to resort to "Force off" I have looked at the syslog and messages log files but do see anything to correlate between host and guest OS. CentOS 6.4 Came back from vacation, rebooted workstation, no X. Wound up running nvidia-installer. Now, I had been using kmod-nvidia, but had to stop a month or so ago, when NVidia stopped supporting my two-yr-old card ("legacy"). When that happened, I uninstalled kmod-nvidia. One dumb question: I can't figure out where I got nvidia-installer. It happily d/l the most current valid version with --update, which it tells me (with --help) that it goes to ftp://download/nvidia.com. -v tells me nvidia-installer: version 319.23 (buildmeister@swio-display-x86-rhel47-11) Thu May 16 20:17:29 PDT 2013 The NVIDIA Software Installer for Unix/Linux. First problem with new xen repo

Hi all, I am trying to test new xen packages from official centos repos. This centos 6.4 x86_64 host is my main virt platform at home (KVM based). My idea is to use kvm and xen in this same host (using init level 3 for kvm and init level 4 for xen), but when I try to install xen packages (using the procedure described in wiki), xen installs new kernel and tries to remove my kvm-kernel aware (remember, official kernel from centos repos). From my point of view, it is not admissible. Do I need to do another complete centos OS install to use xen packages?? Is not possible to use both kernels with only one OS install?? Thanks.

CentOS 6 and XDMCP

Hi all, I am trying to use XDMCP from a Mac (OSX Lion, XQuartz) to an updated CentOS 6 64Bit host. I am tunneling through SSH, so I use XDMCP on the remote host locally via Xnest like this: > ssh -X -C -l $LOGINUSER $HOST -n "Xnest :1 -ac -geometry 1440x850 > -once -query localhost I get a black screen without any login window or desktop background. My /etc/gdm/custom.conf looks like this: > # GDM configuration storage > [daemon] > [security] > DisallowTCP=false > AllowRemoteRoot=true > [xdmcp] > Enable=true > [greeter] > IncludeAll=true > [chooser] > [debug] According to the howtos on the net this should be sufficient, so I am quite stuck. How can I figure out if this is a problem of the CentOS config or of XQuartz? Any hint or help would be appreciated. Dirk

LVM + XFS + external log + snapshots

Hi all, So I have an XFS file system within LVM which has an external log. My mount option in FSTAB is; /dev/vg_spock_data/lv_data /data xfs logdev=/dev/sdc1,nobarrier,logbufs=8,noatime,nodiratime 1 1 All is well no issues and very fast. Now I'd like to snapshot this bad boy and then run rsnapshot to create a few days backup. A snapshot volume is created w/o issue; lvcreate -L250G -s -n datasnapshot /dev/vg_spock_data/lv_data But when i try to mount the file system; mount /dev/vg_spock_data/datasnapshot /snapshot -o nouuid,ro I get this; mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/mapper/vg_anette_data-datasnapshot, missing codepage or helper program, or other error In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try dmesg | tail or so The command dmesg shows; XFS (dm-3): filesystem is marked as having an external log; specify logdev on the mount command line. XFS (dm-3): SB validate failed So I then use this mount option; mount /dev/vg_anette_data/datasnapshot /snapshot -o logdev=/dev/sdc1,nouuid,ro But get this error; mount: /dev/mapper/vg_spock_data-datasnapshot already mounted or /snapshot busy And the command dmesg shows; XFS (dm-3): Invalid device [/dev/sdc1], error=-16 Am I doing something wrong or is this not possible? I prefer being in error, I often am anyways. Thanks in advance, - aurf

Suppose I have this C++ program: #include <iostream> int main (int argc, char** argv) { while (1) { char cmd[80]; std::cin.getline(cmd, 80); std::cout << "response to " << cmd << std::endl; } } compiled by: c++ -o junk junk.cpp and I have this bash script: #!/bin/bash ./junk <<EOF blah bleh \cC EOF echo "Something else" When I run the script, the program starts and waits for input forever. I have 2 questions: 1) The "blah" and "bleh" line are not echoed to cout. Why not? Does the here document not send the data to stdin? 2) How do I terminate the program? automatic import of rpm keys

Hi, I read http://www.stigviewer.com/check/RHEL-06-000008 The CentOS keys live in /etc/pki/rpm-gpg and when I run yum the first time I am asked if I want to accept the key. Alternatively I could import them manually with something like 'rpm --import /etc/pki/rpm-gpg/$key, maybe in the %post of a kickstart. I am wondering why this import is not happening automatically at install time. There must be good reasons for that? -- Markus

Hey Y'all, How much can I trust the output of dmidecode? The manual that came with my MB says that my MB can support up to 2 Gb of DDR2 RAM. dmidecode seems tell me that I can load up to 8 Gb on this MB. As 4 Gb DDR2 sticks cost about $100 each I figured maybe I should ask, what's the chances that I can plug in two 4 Gb sticks in this machine and actually have it work? Korganizer Calendar Alarms stopped working

For a long time--years-- I've been using Korganizer's Calendar. But lately-- since the last kernel upgrade, I believe-- the alarms don't work anymore. I set an appointment and (most of the time) schedule an alarm (one or more) for it, but the small windows containing the reminders don't pop up anymore... not even those set a year ago which always worked before. Anyone else experiencing this? Anyone know what a fix for it might be? tia, ken

Best solution for TRIM on CentOS 5.x

I am planning on using solid state disks with my CentOS 5.x systems. Currently, I am using EXT3 for the file system. >From what I can find, CentOS 5.x does not support TRIM on solid state disks? Is this correct? Should I obtain and build the updated hdparm and use that to trim my drives (for example, via CRON every night at midnight)? Or should I get fstrim (updated util-linux)? Any other suggestions on solid state drives (other than noatime on mounts). Thanks, -- Wade Hampton

What method would you suggest for installing the Pinta screenshot editor on CentOS 6.4?

A screenshot editor needs to do a few things - but it must do these three things easily and well: 1. Draw curved and straight arrows, dotted or solid line, with various end dots and points 2. Draw open circles of various shapes to highlight areas of interest 3. Text easily without having to pre-define a bounding box for the ad-hoc text By far, the most powerful easy-to-use freeware screenshot editor is Paint.NET, which isn't on Linux. On Linux, a distant second place goes to Kolourpaint; and a far distant third place to The GIMP (based on ease of performing those three items above). Oddity with CentOS 6.4 instasll

I have two SSD laptops. On one of them, I easily installed CentOS. On the second one, it failed at examining storage--it would either freeze completely or crash with a kernel panic message. On the second one, a generic Clevo, I decided to reinstall, and got the same issue--hanging or kernel panic on examining storage, though it had been trouble free the first time. I've been googling this and came across nothing relevant--in one case, it was due to LVMs, in another, due to a previous installation, in others, possibly due to EFI, none of which were a factor for me. On the Clevo, I decided to leave it as it is for now, as I'm using it, and the differences aren't major. On the other, an older Zenbook, the UX31E, I was able to get around it by installing CentOS 6.3 instead, which went in without incident. When it crashes, the machine freezes completely, so I'm not even able to view any logs, get to a terminal with ctl+alt+Fx. At this point, I'm not asking for help, as much as I am wondering if anyone else has run into this. Another theory given to someone having similar problems was to check memory, which I haven't done, but apparently, only CentOS and SL 6.4 have this problem. Also, as I can work around it, I am not going to spend a lot of time troubleshooting--but I'm wondering if anyone else has run into something similar. It's only been on these two laptops, and the only thing really in common is that they're SSD, but I have no idea if that's a factor--I don't have an extra SATA notebook drive to test if that's the issue or nto. So, my only question here is, has anyone else run into this, and did you find a fix? Or suggestions in trouble shooting? (Though I probably won't go to the effort of running memtest overnight, as 6.4 seems to be the only thing affected. I tried with both netinstall and Install DVD on both SL and CentOS, same result, crash or hang at examining storage devices). I have not tried totally cleaning the disk of either machine and seeing if that's an issue, but in both cases, there was both empty space and empty, standard ext4 partitions for them to use. Thanks for taking the time to look at this. Though I'm not going to invest a great deal of effort in troubleshooting, I'm certainly ready to try simple solutions. Is it possible that Samba4 includes a large PAC on the kerberos credential and you're going over the limit in kernel? Against AD you have to disable this PAC inclusion via the userAccountControl attribute to make kerberised NFSv4 work correctly. You /sometimes/ find that testing with a user who is a member of as close to no groups as possible works in this case, but users in many groups fail. I'm not convinced your comment about having to run svcgssd on clients is enforced due to CentOS in it scripts, but it shouldn't cause any bother as you say. I can't check right now. Still using the 2.6.32-358.6.2.el6 kernel. I tried the workaround suggested in: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=720479 just in case, but it made no difference. init.d scripts not starting at boot

I have just deployed a new CentOS 6.4 image on AWS, and I'm having issues with init.d scripts not starting up. I've verified the following; 1) They work on their own after boot 2) They're set to run at runlevel 3,4, and 5 via chkconfig 3) The system boots up in runlevel 3 (no GUI) 4) There are no lingering PID files around after boot 5) Permissions are correct on the files in init.d 6) /etc/init.d is linked to /etc/rc.d/init.d 7) Some functions start up correctly at start up (such as bind) 8) All file systems are mounted in runlevel 3 9) The IP address is static on the server One specific example is crond; Chkconfig output: crond 0:off 1:off 2:on 3:on 4:on 5:on 6:off permissions in init.d: -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 2793 Jul 18 2011 crond The processes that aren't loading are; Clamd, directadmin, exim, freshclam, httpd, mysqld, ossec, proftpd, sshguard Any ideas what I need to check/change to resolve this problem? Help with 6.4 install on ASUS laptop

Hello all, Hoping someone can help me. I followed the instructions here: http://cedarboy.com/informational/install-centos-6-using-unetbootin-and-a-t… the exception that in step 8. (Now copy the same image into the root directory of the thumbdrive.) I could not find a directory labled /root/ so I copied the image to / the main directory where everything else is. Once the install began I picked that install media was on hard drive and picked /dev/sbd1. I then selected the harddrive an (ATA WDC) as the target drive. It seems to begin to write the filesystem and the stops and gives me this message: "unable to read package metadata. This may be due to a missing repodata directory. Please ensure that your install tree has been correctly generated. Cannot open/read repomd.xml file for repository: anaconda-base-201303050102.x86_64. Please verify it's path and try again. I have the an exthernet cable pluged in from router but I am pretty sure that the machine cannot access the internet. As when I tried to enter the repodata url manually it said that the eth0 was not configured and game me a "bug" error when I tried to do so. Can anyone help?

Hi, I am currently using keyboardcast but I had to modify the sources to make it behave "properly" (light, auto-placed, auto-tiled windows, etc) and... I lost my modifications and do not want to recode it once more... :/ I wanted to use mssh (not the python one, the one from Bradley Smith) but I cannot find an rpm and cannot compile it on CentOS 5 due to a too old vte-devel library (compiles on CentOS 6 though)... Anyone knows a good *multiple windows* shell multiplexer...? Thx, JD

I have a NAS that I can connect to just fine with a CentOS 6.3 box. But when I try the same exact command on my CentOS 6.4 box I get this error. mount -t cifs //xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx/mailserver/ /mnt/test -o username=xxx,password=xxx mount error(13): Permission denied Refer to the mount.cifs(8) manual page (e.g. man mount.cifs) I've been googling, trying different things all afternoon, please help Thanks Dan

XFS inode64 NFS export on CentOS6

Hi, I am trying to get the most out of my 40TB xfs file system and I have noticed that the inode64 mount option gives me a roughly 30% performance increase (besides the other useful things). The problem is that I have to export the filesystem via NFS and I cannot seem to get this working with the current version of nfs-utils (1.2.3). The export option fsid=uuid cannot be used (the standard nfs-utils does accept this option). Also I am not exporting the root of the filesystem, but a couple of subdirs. If I mount the subdirs on the clients it seems to go alright. But when I do e.g. an 'ls' I get a 'Stale NFS handle' error. Updating nfs-utils seems not so trivial so I would like to skip this option :-) How can I export this filesystem with inode64 enabled and mount it on my clients? All clients are Centos6 64bits as is the server. Cheers, Maarten van Ingen

fail2ban with standard Apache log format?

I want to use fail2ban on CentOS 6 to monitor Apache with the standard default logfile format ("combined"). Has anyone here succeeded in doing so? The format has the IP at the start of the line, followed by two dashes (if no authentication) and THEN the timestamp. What I've read on the fail2ban wiki seems to say that the timestamp must ALWAYS be at the start of the line, followed by other stuff. I'm amazed if it isn't configurable... Hi All. I currently have a problem with hostname and fqdn. I use: # cat /etc/redhat-release ; uname -r CentOS release 6.4 (Final) 2.6.32-358.11.1.el6.centos.plus.x86_64 # hostname srv1.devel.test.com # grep HOSTNAME /etc/sysconfig/network HOSTNAME=srv1.devel.test.com # cat /etc/hostname srv1 # cat /etc/domainname devel.test.com but # hostname --fqdn devel.test.com As I think it should give: srv1.devel.test.com. I have read many Centos webpages and mail archives but found only raw descriptions of the build process. My first aim is to rebuild CentOS-6.4-x86_64-LiveCD.iso using the Centos repositories and preferably without recompiling the SRPMs, just to verify the build process. Hi. I'm seeing a lot of entries in /var/log/audit/audit.log acct=28756E6B6E6F776E207573657229 , which apparently means unknown user . Sample from the logs : type=USER_LOGIN msg=audit(1370998250.746:1622709): user pid=16762 uid=0 auid=4294967295 ses=4294967295 msg='op=login acct=28756E6B6E6F776E207573657229 exe="/usr/sbin/sshd" hostname=? addr=127.0.0.1 terminal=ssh res=failed' How do I track down what is causing this ? Thus far I have has not luck using the pid with ps or lsof as it seems the process has gone by the time I respond to the log entries. Thanks G

I have https console access authenticating admin user through kerberos, and have migrated information on 80+ users and groups to it from a LDAP server. Permissions of mercurial-hgk?

I just installed mercurial-hgk on CentOS 6.4 x86 and the permissions were set so that it couldn't be run by a non-root user. The two files that had incorrect permissions were: /usr/libexec/mercurial/ /usr/libexec/mercurial/hgk Is that an issue with CentOS? Or is it an issue that I should open a bugzilla against RHEL for? ipv6 only kickstart installs

Hi, I have a kvm host and I try to install a centos 6 guest with a static ip address. When I do a manual install I eventually get to the network configuration and if I enter IP, gateway and DNS Server I can ping6 the guest from the host and I can ping6 the guest from outside. I do not want to do manual installation, so I have to specify a url to a kickstart file, but to download it the network must be configured. I try some kernel options noipv4 ipv6=... gateway=... dns=... ks=http… This gets me so far that I can ping6 the guest from the host, but I can not reach it from outside. When I ping from outside I see the guest sending neighbor solicitation requests for the IP I ping from, but this IP is in another network. I think the guest does not get a gateway configured. At least the ipv6 option is working, because I can ping the guest from the host. How do I achieve such a ipv6 only with static network configuration kickstart install? How to specify ipv6 gateway (and possibly dns) -- Markus

Setting up paths etc. for Qt 4 development

Hi, I was just wondering, is there a "correct" or "preferred" way of setting up the path and other environment variables for Qt 4 development/build using qmake and all - on a CentOS 6 system? I mean, this does not work out-of-the box, at least if you have build files that assume "qmake" may be executed just like that - as there is no Qt 4 qmake on the path, although "qmake-qt4" is available. Also, if qt3-devel is installed, and the default path setup is used, "qmake" will point to the Qt 3 version, as the package includes a profile.d file that modify the path in such a way. Which also sets up other Qt related variables, I believe. There is no such file in qt4-devel, however. I know ways to set up everything so that this works as expected, of course, but it would be interesting to know how the packagers intended it to be done. Are you expected to edit login files by hand? That's sort of surprising in this day and age... Or is the thinking that the suffixed ("-qt4") version of commands will always be used? Or that everyone will be using plain make with pkg-config? adaptec RAID

We've got this PC PitStop RAID box (they're so proud of it, there's no logo), and what lspci tells me is an Adaptec AAC-RAID (ref 09) controller. I see there's no F/OSS controllers for it, but when I go to Adaptec's site, the search denies all knowledge of such a controller. I'd like to get the correct one, and I really want an x86_64 version; googling found me a 386 rpm. Anyone know how to identify what *Adaptec* calls this thing, so I can find the info I need on their site? mark

Repair grub GPT/UEFI?

What does it take to make a disk bootable on a system with UEFI and a GPT on the boot disk? I used a default disk layout in the initial install on a 600Gb drive (on a box that also contained a larger raid). and it used a GPT. ReaR won't work to back up/restore this system, complaining about the UEFI. I cloned the drive to a different server with clonezilla-live which completed without errors but it won't boot. I booted an install disk in rescue mode, did a chroot to /mnt/sysimage and everything looked OK. A 'grub-install /dev/sda' did not give any errors and I can now get it to boot to the grub> prompt. Link for Logical Volume has incorrect SE Linux context

Hi A few days ago we rebooted a server and found that one of the Logical Volumes would not mount at boot, but mounted cleanly manually. So I traced the problem to SE Linux. Specifically the context for /dev/mapper/VolGroup01-lv_ staff is wrong. s -lsahZ /dev/mapper/VolGroup01-* lrwxrwxrwx. root root system_u:object_r:quota_db_t:s0 /dev/mapper/VolGroup01-lv_staff -> ../dm-25 lrwxrwxrwx. root root system_u:object_r:device_t:s0 /dev/mapper/VolGroup01-lv_student -> ../dm-24 I have tried to correct this with the Logical Volume active and mounted using chcon -v --reference /dev/mapper/VolGroup01-lv_student /dev/mapper/VolGroup01-lv_staff and while this command completes the context is not changed. Can someone confirm or deny that making the Logical Volume inactive and then repeating the chcon should change the link to the correct context? Thanks for any insight you can offer.

Johnny (& other CentOS folks), Am I being fooled by some proxies between me and centos (and all the centos mirrors, which what I normally use), or has the repodata for CentOS 5.9 updates not been updated since 03-Jun-2013 12:08? I was under the impression that the repodata on the main centos servers was updated about the same time as any CentOS-announce message going out, unless I also see a message from one of the admins indicating an issue, so I am very confused. Unable to change runlevel at boot time

Hello, I am running in problem of changing boot mode. My snort script dump packets speedily that I am unable to login as either GUI or CLI I have followed steps Boot Menu options -> pressing e -> kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.32-358.6.1.el6.x86.64 ro root=UUID=ac176b7b-cbbf--> then press e-> <TYPE=pc KEYTABLE=us rd_NO_DM rhgb quiet radeon.modeset=0 when I try to change 0 to 1,3,5 it reverts to 0. KVM console?

I finally got access to some machines with more resources than the free VMware ESXi license allows which pushed me into trying kvm instead. Seems capable enough for what I need and can even import and run the existing vmdk images I already have. But, I have some questions about accessing the virt-manager console remotely for initial configuration, etc.. Normally I use freenx for remote GUI access and it seems to work except that on the Windows guest I tried the cursor position never stays in sync. Are there better ways to get remote access to the GUI or centralize access to a group of KVM servers? Or do most people automate the VM setup to the point where they don't need console access until it is up on the network where you can connect directly to the guest? -- Les Mikesell lesmikesell(a)gmail.com

Question on detect serial ports

I have a small based atom machine. There are four serial ports on the machine. dmesg | grep tty shows 0, 1, 2 and 3. 2 and 3 are on interrupt 10 -and they worked. going into the BIOS COM ports 0 and 1 are also on IRQ 10 and not the standard 3,4. BIOS cannot set anything but IRQ 10, 11 for serial ports. Odd... So COM 0 and 1 dont work right away... I had to put this in the boot script. setserial /dev/ttyS1 irq 10 port 0x2e8 setserial /dev/ttyS0 irq 10 port 0x3e8 now they seem to work. I have no idea why the bios will not have IRQ 3 and 4 for com ports but I was surprised linux did not inquire from the bios and use it. Should it get that from the BIOS - or - just leave the manual setting and move on... jerry

we're running into a scenario similar to this with CentOS 6, zero length files after a system crash. http://oss.sgi.com/archives/xfs/2012-02/msg00607.html I'm not exactly sure which kernel version they are running in production (its in China), but I'm trying to find out. its probably a year or so old, our manufacturing operations folks do NOT like installing random updates without very good reasons. meanwhile, I wonder if anyone familiar with it knows if the fix that Dave Chinner discusses in that posting I link above has been backported to a recent EL6 kernel. -- john r pierce 37N 122W somewhere on the middle of the left coast

I am getting this error when trying to access a virtual website index by ip address and port on a host that has SELinux disabled (another issue over which I have less control than I wish): curl http://192.168.6.9:41780 | more Gives this error in /var/log/httpd/error_log [Mon Jun 10 09:04:44 2013] [error] [client 192.168.6.9] Directory index forbidden by Options directive: /tftpboot/ and displays the default Centos/Apache server page instead of the list of files in the directory. This virtual host is defined thus: Listen 192.168.6.9:41780 <VirtualHost 192.168.6.9:41780> DocumentRoot "/tftpboot" <Directory "/tftpboot"> allow from all Options +Indexes </Directory> </VirtualHost> If I specify a known file within /tftpboot then that file's contents are displayed properly. Issue tracker question: Can I delete/replace an attachment?

I then found it wasn't quite correct, so I edited it, then tried "Upload file" again, with the same filename, but got a message saying: APPLICATION ERROR #9 This is a duplicate file. Please delete the file first. Please use the "Back" button in your web browser to return to the previous page. There you can correct whatever problems were identified in this error or select another action. You can also click an option from the menu bar to go directly to a new section. I can't find a way to "delete the file first", though. Is this possible? Force to strip all symbols from ELFs when using rpmbuild on CentOS

Hello. What's the proper way to remove *all symbols* from ELF binaries when building packages with rpmbuild on CentOS? Seems that an out of the box rpmbuild install only discards debugging symbols (strip -g). That's the default configuration for %__os_install_post on CentOS, the step in charge on stripping binaries: $ rpmbuild --showrc (..) -14: __os_install_post %{_rpmconfigdir}/brp-compress %{_rpmconfigdir}/brp-strip %{_rpmconfigdir}/brp-strip-static-archive %{_rpmconfigdir}/brp-strip-comment-note ELF binaries are stripped with /usr/lib/rpm/brp-strip, this script explicitly calls to /usr/bin/strip with "-g" flag and discards only debugging symbols. Seems that the people usually installs "redhat-rpm-config" package to achieve this. Indeed it builds RPMs with all symbols removed, but it also installs some helper scripts and macros that change other behaviors, for example SRPMs are signed with SHA-256. When "redhat-rpm-config" package is installed, %__os_install_post variable is modified and find-debuginfo.sh is executed, this script will remove all symbols, but it will *also* build "-debug" packages, and that's not what I'm looking for. For the moment, I have have added another script to %__os_install_post step that removes all symbols using "strip --strip-all", but I wonder if this is the most straightforward method, thanks. Intel 82579V ethernet nic using only one IRQ? (Dual TX RX queues)

Hello CentOS Community, So I bought a NIC (using the Intel 82579V chipset) that supports Dual RX and TX queues , my goal with that is so iam able to see and use two IRQs in /proc/interrupts and hence be able to take advantage of 2 cores on my CPU. Instead I only see one IRQ being used, and hence only one CPU core.. Please see below. Advisement is appreciated! RHEL clone distributions being marginalized?

It appears that Redhat is starting to offer newer packages as an add on license to their distribution. In the past I believe they only offered add on license packages beyond what did not come with the base distribution like GFS or the HA packages. Of course this has also changed over time. The latest beta release of software collections and the developer suite shows that they are providing software channels that install newer versions of GCC(4.8), Python(2.7, 3.3), PHP, perl, mariadb, etc. I'm wondering if at some point Redhat is going to remove these packages from the base distribution and only have them as add on licensed channels. I guess they still need a baseline version that will stay the same for the customers who refuse to update for compatibility reasons. At this point the developer suite is a pretty good deal because you get RHEL server with most of the licensed add on channels for only $99 a year. However, you're not suppose to use it for production.. Is there a plan for the CentOS group to release these newer packages too? If these packages start being used by developers and required to run their programs/web apps I think it could marginalize RHEL clone distributions like CentOS. David.

IPv4 192.168.71.1 'leaks out onto WAN.

Arch = x86_64 OS = CentOS-6.4 (centos) with all updates applied to date. On our gateway host eth0 is the WAN access and eth1 is the LAN. I wish to activate the address 192.185.71.1 on eth1. The ifcfg-eth1:192071 file contains this: NAME="" BOOTPROTO=none MACADDR="" IPV6INIT=no DEVICE=eth1:192071 NETMASK=255.255.255.0 MTU="" BROADCAST=192.168.71.255 ONPARENT=no IPADDR=192.168.71.1 NETWORK=192.168.71.0 ONBOOT=no When I try ifup to activate the address then I see this: # ifup eth1:192071 Error, some other host already uses address 192.168.71.1. I investigated what that host could be using nmap -v -APn 192.168.71.1/32 and discovered that my gateway host is allowing 192.168.71.0 out through eth0 onto the WAN (and presumably anything else that it originates). Presently we masquerade 192.168.0.0/16 in a NAT POSTROUTING chain which handles the internal hosts seeking addresses on the WAN. However, I am unsure of how to handle the gateway itself. Is this situation best handled by a permanent route reflecting 192.168 to eth1 only? Or, is it handled better by an addition to the OUTPUT chain in the NAT IPTable? Facebook group needs help with newbie member questions

Hi all. A represent Official CentOS group on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/2371797727/ Recently we have grown to 3.240+ members, and it looks like we are now more visible since we reached 3000+ members. In last 7 days we had 131 new members ~19 per day, mostly newbie's with problems. Since I am only active admin/knowledgeable person in the group, I am under big load. Karanbir and Ralph try to help, but I am mostly alone "out there" So if any of you are willing to answer to newbie questions and maybe add to our howto documents, you are more then welcome. Be warned that it is imperative to be polite to them, since Facebook users are more spoiled then others, but I think it is one of the best way to popularize CentOS among the newbie population that is deciding what distro to choose for it's main distro. Just sending them to wiki, forums or here is not really an option since most of them will not bother with registering, they would most likely just find some inadequate howto on the net, mainly not even for rpm distro but explaining how to manually download and compile packages :-/ Again, I believe that grooming newbie's on Facebook can be great for CentOS popularization, since General Linux group has 36.000+ members (and 244 new members in last 7 days at the moment). Two issues: first, I've noticed a number of times that selinux is there, which we usually have in permissive, but setroubleshoot is *not* installed. Is there be some kind of dependency or group that it should be part of that's missing? I don't see why I need to manually install it.... Second - and I thought I knew the answer to this, but guess I don't - I see AVC's in the log file, but no sealerts - how do I start it up to give me them in messages? I see auditd is running.... mark

I installed Centos 6.4 on my laptop and neither of the network interfaces will work. When I boot up to windows both the wired and the wireless network interfaces work. Network performance issue on CentOS 6 KVM

Hi All, I am using CentOS 6.4 on 4 servers, guests are also CentOS 6.4 Network is setup using virtio, and vhost, this works well but sometime I see connection issue from application to DB. I found that sometimes latency increases from 0.200 ms approx to 123ms or even more sometimes, this happens only for 1-2 packets but keep happening after sometime. CPU load remains under 1, CPU usages is around 20-30%. If I ping from host machine to host machine then there is consistent latency, this only happens when ping from a guest machine to either other guest machines or a host machine. Did anyone face similar issue?

Hey all, i am fighting with a strange behavior here - i have two systems connected via a direct crosslink wire. After booting, the connection is up and both systems can reach the other one. Samba4 and NVSv4

Short story: cannot get Kerberized NFSv4 to work. I've googled a great deal and cannot find where I have goofed (and there sure is a lot of misleading and just plain incorrect information out there), so would appreciate another pair of eyes. NFSv4 without Kerberos does work fine, as does ID mapping. We're using NFSv4 in production with sec=sys, but I'm not happy with that. My kerberized NFSv4 attempts are on a separate test cluster. Longer story (sorry for the length): All servers and clients are CentOS 6.4 with kernel 2.6.32-358.6.2.el6 and nfs-utils 1.2.3-36.el6; patches are up to date. NFSv4 servers are x86_64, clients are both x86_64 and i686. Two DC's are both i686, running Samba 4.0.5 with bind 9.91 + bind_dlz. Replication is good. All CentOS systems use sssd only and no winbind; this is also working (kinit, sudo, ssh, etc all good). Samba is at 3.6.9 on all systems except for the DC's. Samba4 works; DNS works; Kerberos works; NFSv4 works with sec=sys. I joined the clients to the domain ("TITAN.TEST.CORNELL.EDU") with: # net ads join -U Administrator ... # net ads testjoin and created the nfs service principals (on the client and NFSv4 server) with: # net ads keytab add nfs -U Administrator This all works. The NFSv4 server exports with sec=sys:krb5 (and as I said, NFSv4 works fine without krb5, so I believe the exports file to be correct). But when I try to mount, I get the catch-all error: # mount -t nfs4 -o sec=krb5 costello.test.cornell.edu:/data /mnt/tmp mount.nfs4: access denied by server while mounting costello.test.cornell.edu:/data and in /var/log/messages on the same client: Jun 5 17:11:13 abbott rpc.gssd[1439]: Success getting keytab entry for 'nfs/abbott.test.cornell.edu(a)TITAN.TEST.CORNELL.EDU' Jun 5 17:11:13 abbott rpc.gssd[1439]: WARNING: Client 'nfs/abbott.test.cornell.edu(a)TITAN.TEST.CORNELL.EDU' not found in Kerberos database while getting initial ticket for principal 'nfs/abbott.test.cornell.edu(a)TITAN.TEST.CORNELL.EDU' using keytab 'FILE:/etc/krb5.keytab' Jun 5 17:11:13 abbott rpc.gssd[1439]: ERROR: No credentials found for connection to server costello.test.cornell.edu With tcpdump I can see that the DC is contacted during the mount, but the NFSv4 server is not. The log files on the NFSv4 server are silent. I have tried (everything was restarted between tests); "no change" means that it still does not work and gives the same exact errors: - verified that /etc/idmapd.conf on all systems has the same domains and realms. This works anyway with sec=sys. - reduced the keytab to the DES enctypes for nfs/... on all systems; no change. - used "allow_weak_crypto=true" in /etc/krb5.conf; no change. - set default_tgs_enctypes and default_tkt_enctypes to "des-cbc-md5 des-cbc-md4 des-cbc-crc" in /etc/krb5.conf; no change. - tried adding the service principals on the DC with "samba-tool spn add" instead of "net ads keytab add" on the client, and then exporting the keytab to the client; no change. - add the SPN "nfs/abbott.test.cornell.edu(a)TITAN.TEST.CORNELL.EDU" and "nfs/abbott(a)TITAN.TEST.CORNELL.EDU" in case the missing realm was a factor; no change. - started rpc.gssd on the clients with the -l switch; no change. - started rpc.svcgssd with the -n switch so that nfs/ service principals are in theory not required; no change. I do not understand why rpc.gssd canot find the service principal, when it does exist in the database. I've probably missed out some other things that I have tried to no effect. Help! xhost + via Desktop centos 6.3 not working

Hello list, In the past we have instructed users to perform 'xhost +' from their centos desktop, then set the DISPLAY variable on a remote computer to forward their display back to the desktop. This does not seem to work on centos 6 - but it did work in centos 5. It works from a vnc session on the desktop machine, but does not work from the local desktop. We would typically use a display variable like this: export DISPLAY=163.198.177.218:0.0 - The target system acts like the request is being refused: Error: Can't open display: 163.198.177.218:0.0 Have there been any changes in centos 6 which make xhost + behave differently for the desktop session? We've been struggling with this issue now for some time - can't find the right solution. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks in advance, William

ssh -Y X-forwarding?

On rare occasions I want to run a remote X command (like 'meld' to interactively merge changes in files) and normally 'ssh -Y remote_host' from a terminal in an NX/freenx window that is acting as my desktop to start and any X program subsequently started would open in a new window via X-forwarding - at least when the target is a 5.x host. I don't do it often enough to remember if it ever worked when the remote side is 6.x, but today it is not setting the $DISPLAY variable, so I get: Error: Can't open display: Using -vv shows it at least trying to go through the motions: debug2: x11_get_proto: /usr/bin/xauth list :1420.0 2>/dev/null debug1: Requesting X11 forwarding with authentication spoofing. debug2: channel 0: request x11-req confirm 0 debug2: client_session2_setup: id 0 debug2: channel 0: request pty-req confirm 1 debug1: Sending environment. debug1: Sending env LANG = en_US.UTF-8 debug2: channel 0: request env confirm 0 debug2: channel 0: request shell confirm 1 debug2: fd 3 setting TCP_NODELAY But, $DISPLAY is not set to anything. centos 6' repositories against redhat 6 upstream

Hi Wonder how's the relationship between the centos 6's main OS/ repository and redhat 6's repositories. Let's say, Redhat 6 seperate RPMs into a series of repos like: redhat-6-server ##(base redhat 6 OS/) redhat-6-server-optional redhat-6-server-supplementary redhat-6-server-rhev-agent rhel-6-server-cf-tools ... Does centos 6 merge all the redhat 6 repos into one big repository? or still leave out some minor/functional ones? If the second is true, then it will be great if we can find the repo mapping link between Redhat 6 and centos 6. Thanks a lot. --Rob
