Is there a good nntp client for Centos 6 that handles SSL native? It was difficult, to say the least, on Centos anyway, to get Pan to post to Mixmin servers, which require SSL (so we have to use Stunnel to add SSL capabilities to Pan) on Centos. Had Pan native SSL support, this wouldn't have been a problem. Hence the question: Q: Is there a good freeware NNTP client with a Centos repository that handles SSL native? Note: Here's the abbreviated sequence to install Stunnel with Pan (but it took me months to come up with this as all the tutorials on the web fail in the little Centos details). Install Stunnel: $ sudo yum install stunnel -y Read bug reports to find a stunnel init script for Centos: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=455815 Add & modify that stunnel /etc/init.d/stunnel script: http://bugzilla.redhat.com/attachment.cgi?id=325164 Configure the Stunnel /etc/stunnel/stunnel.conf file: ;setuid = nobody ;setgid = nobody client = yes [nntp] accept = localhost:2119 connect = news.mixmin.net:563 NOTE: It took me months to figure out that these two now-commented lines cause stunnel to fail on my Centos box: Test Stunnel: $ telnet localhost 2119 Trying ::1... telnet: connect to address ::1: Connection refused Trying 127.0.0.1... failed exaile install

I'm trying to install the exaile package on my newly upgraded CentOS 6.4 machine. It fails (see below) with missing dependencies on python-cddb and gnome-python2-gtkmozembed. I found this thread but there does not seem to be any resolution. \ Has anyone got this installed? Am I missing a repo? Configuring source-specific routing

I'm attempting to configure source-specific routing so that my servers can exist on multiple subnets from multiple upstream providers. A rough diagram of the network layout: ISP1 router (blackbox, routes subnet A, address on subnet A) \ -----------eth0(firewall)eth1---((servers)) / ISP2 router (blackbox, routes subnet B, address on subnet B) The aim is to allow the servers to use both subnet A and subnet B. To allow this, any machine on both subnets must have source-specific routing configured, else packets originating from one ISP's AS will be directed at the other's router, and neither ISP cares for that. At the moment, I'm focusing on getting the second ISP properly added to the firewall box. The firewall box is using CentOS 6.4, and normally passes traffic back and forth via proxy_arp. None of my interfaces are NM_CONTROLLED, and NetworkManager is not installed, much less started. I've created a route-eth0:1 file that looks roughly like this: 10.0.0.1 dev eth0:1 \ src 10.0.0.2 \ from 10.0.0.0/29 default via 10.0.0.1 dev eth0:1 \ src 10.0.0.2 \ from 10.0.0.0/29 (Treat indented lines as continuations of the previous line) (No, the ISPs aren't giving me RFC1918 addresses; these are redacted.) If I run "ifup eth0:1", "ip route show" includes the lines: 10.0.0.1 dev eth0 scope link src 10.0.0.2 10.0.0.0/29 dev eth0 proto kernel scope link src 10.0.0.2 default via 10.0.0.1 dev eth0 Note that the "from 10.0.0.0/29" clause is missing. With the addition of a second default route on my firewall/gateway without any restriction on which traffic should go that way, my whole network, of course, tanks. I'm surprised it's been such a pain; I would have expected it to be a relatively common configuration. What's the proper way of doing source-specific routing on CentOS?

Kickstart and volume group with a dash in the name

Hi, I'm trying to setup the provisioning of new OpenStack hypervisors with cinder volumes on them. The problem is that kickstart doesn't allow dashed in volume group names? I tried this: volgroup cinder-volumes --pesize=4096 pv.02 and this: volgroup cinder--volumes --pesize=4096 pv.02 but in both cases I end up with a volume group named "cindervolumes" on the system. Any idea what I have to do to accomplish this? Defining VGs with dashes works perfectly fine on the command line. Regards, Denis

Anyone know off the top of their heads if this (AT-2972SX) fiber network card will work out of the box with CentOS 6.x? Sounds like it's a Broadcom-based card, so perhaps it will, or maybe something exists for it in elrepo? Hoping to avoid needing to build custom drivers from source. Ray

trying to recover an audio CD...

I'm trying to recover data from an audio cd. it is a recording of a live session, made on a professional cd recorder, on the fly. apparently, instead of stopping it and fixating the disc, someone turned off the power. oops. I know that wodim will fixate a disk as long as it was otherwise properly terminated (I've done it more than once), but this one it won't fixate. depending on the drive I try it in, I get different messages, but in either case, it remains unfixated. so i've tried reading it with cdparanoia, but it can't do anything with it, or not that I've figured out how to do. flashing a BIOS on an HP server

Hi, folks, Since I've gotten a total of one response in days on the HP forum, maybe the collective mind here has an answer.... As I've mentioned in other posts, we have an HP dl580 g5 that started throwing ECC errors. But wait, it's worse: memory is mirrored.... And the thing is fully populated with 32 DIMMs. I took my best guess, pulled the matching set of DIMMs, and took two off of one of the four riser boards to replace them. I find that the m/b *must* be fully populated before adding riser boards... *and* the riser boards are mirrored. So I had to pull two riser boards, the one I'd taken two DIMMs off of, and it's mirror. Brought it back up, no errors. Then, Monday, I tried replacing one of the two, apparently good riser boards with one that I'd taken out, and had put the two DIMMs that I was guessing included the bad one. I *still* can't provoke the error. Maybe it only happens when I have everything fully populated? (I've run stress to the point where all 2G of swap is used....) Meanwhile, I'd joined an HP forum, and someone suggested that I really, really needed a BIOS update, and that would fix it. Sounds plausible. However, when I found the d/l of that, I ran into three things: first, the damn thing was an .exe, and they do *not* seem to have a .bin. Second, the "description" (laughable, at best) didn't seem to say anything about ECC errors, but whatever. Then there's the biggie: it *seems* to say that I have to install a previous BIOS update first... but I'm not sure. I would have thought it was a full package. Now, as the system is long out of warranty, and there's no way the other Institute will spring to pay HP, they won't even talk to me about *anything*, so I'm on my own. The upshot: does anyone here have a clue as to whether I can flash update the BIOS with the latest update, or whether I actually have to do the older one first? Thanks in advance. mark

Audio Problem

Hi All, I have Centos 6.0 on VirtualBox 4.2. Audio playback is working fine but I am unable to perform audio recording. httpd writes much to /var? How to audit it properly?

Hi All. I currently use: Apache/2.2.21 on: 2.6.32-279.9.1.el6.centos.plus.x86_64 CentOS release 6.3 (Final) >From time to time (it happenes on different machines) I have a very high load up to 100, and I see that there are up to 300/s writes to /var at the same time. Apache restart solves the problem. I would like to know the reason so I decided to use auditd. I've used: auditctl -w /var -p warx And for example: ausearch -f /var -i -ts 04/29/2013 23:00:00 -te 04/29/2013 23:01:00 -ua 11111 | grep 'syscall=open' | wc -l gives me "5" but in my monitoring I see that there were up to 300 writes per second to /var at the same moment (id 11111 - httpd) (I have verified the writes with command line tools). ausearch -f /var -i -ts 04/29/2013 23:00:00 -te 04/29/2013 23:01:00 | grep 'syscall=open' | wc -l gives: 15 Thanks to auditd I know that the syscalls are performed on /var/tmp but why is there such a difference in auditd output and writes measured in operating system? Apache stops without evident cause

OS = CentOS-6.4 Uptime = 4 days, 1:31, httpd-2.2.15 SELinux=enforcing audit2why -l -a = nil report Since upgrading a public web service host from dedicated hardware running CentOS-5.x to a KVM virtual host running CentOS-6.3 I have experienced intermittent ( one every couple of months) halts by the Apache web service. There is never any trace left in any of the logs, there are no SELinux avc's recorded, and the rest of the system remains up. It is just the httpd service that stops. I have an automatic restart job in place so this is not a show stopper. But I am concerned that this behaviour is pointing to a fundamental problem somewhere. Has anyone else experienced this? Why is my default DISPLAY suddenly :3.0?

I'm on Fedora 6.3. After a reboot, some proprietary software didn't want to run. I found out that the startup script for said software manually sets DISPLAY to :0.0, which I know is not a good idea, and I can fix. Directory Server vs just plain old LDAP server

Hi all, I'm migrating from my Cent 5.x LDAP server to Cent 6.x. But wondering if there are any advantages to the Directory Server package itself? Been using regular old LDAP server for years now. I manage it both via Webmin and command line as well as some tweaks to a Drupal module. The fail over has always sort of bothered me as the secondary LDAP servers pull vs being pushed to, at least that was the case in Centos 5.x At any rate, your opinions would be appreciated. 4 monitors with one graphics card and standard driver

I've just test an ATI FirePro 2460 graphics card on CentOS 6.4. It connects 4 monitors. It worked with the standard radeon driver. I was able to arrange the monitors into my preferred configuration (as a square array, 1 upper left, 2 lower left, 3 lower right, 4 upper right) simply by clicking System -> Preferences -> Display, and then moving the four monitor images. This creates the file ~/.config/monitors.xml . Moving windows among the monitors worked smoothly. I did not install the proprietary ATI driver; I don't need any of its features beyond what the standard driver provides. Some details: Dell Optiplex 9010, Small Form Factor (SFF) case requires SFF cards. CentOS 6.4 fully updated as of today. 2.6.32-358.2.1.el6.x86_64 kernel xorg-x11-drv-ati 6.99.99 1.el6 x86_64 BIOS shows the board in slot 1 (the blue connector) as "VGA Compatible" lspci shows 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI Cedar [FirePro 2460] Kernel driver in use: radeon No xorg.conf was created or required. 4 Dell 2007FP monitors, each at 1600x1200 connected via DVI. I used to use Matrox M9140 cards, but that requires the Matrox proprietary driver which has not been updated for CentOS 6.4 as of today. I also tested two other cards: ATI FirePro 2450 and NVidia Quadro NVS 420. For each of these cards, the BIOS shows the card in slot 1 as a PCI Bridge. lspci reports two identical video cards at 03:00.0 and 04:00.0. Though it's easy to set up two screens properly, xinerama would probably be required in an xorg.conf to get all four screens working properly. -- Dale Dellutri

On this system I have two nics If I look at the network connection There is nothing there. If I do ifconfig -a the two nics are there If I do ifup eth0 I get device doesn't seem to be present If I do ifup eth1 the system search to determine the IP information for this device. [centos-6.3-desktop] Unable to login

Hello, I have trapped in weird problem. My Setup is CentOS 6.3 Desktop edition x86_64 arch. My login screen is blinking so frequently that I am unable to see and login into it. And also I am unable to reinstall the OS because it will take very long time re-setup everything as per my configuration as well as Data. The problem is as follows: I have several months ago libgcc-4.4.6.i686. Today for installing rsyslog, I updated the package libgcc-4.4.7.i686 and libgcc-4.4.7.x86_64. Then thinking about chances of conflict, I removed libgcc-4.4.7.i686 it has also removed the cups-libs gmp gnutils gtk2 libstdc++ libtiff peazip all are i686 type. Then I installed same packages for 64 bit through yum install <above packages> Message also said successfully installed. Then I try to open another terminal window but it was suddenly closing so I thought restart might solve this problem; so I restart the computer. I am getting normal CentOS login backgroud but getting faster blinking screen. How should I solve this problem (except formatting the CentOS) as CentOS is the only OS on that machine. 1. DIMM problem

Hey, folks, I've got an HP Proliant DL580 G5 throwing ECC errors. This is annoying, since a) it's all new as of a few months ago, and b) it's *fully* populated. The two things I need to figure out are a) *which* DIMM it is, and b) is it mirrored; if so, which *other* DIMM needs to come out until we get replacements from the OEM. Here's one of many, all identical, from dmesg: EDAC MC0: CE row 12, channel 1, label "": Corrected error (Branch=0, Channel 1), DRAM-Bank=2 RD RAS=8218 CAS=500, CE Err=0x10000, Syndrome=0x6cad8e02(Correctable Patrol Data ECC)) I see the Bank=2, so I assume that's the first riser board on the left; but I can't identify which of the four (?) DIMMs on it is the problem. I've been googling, and skimming useless manuals, and have just been trying to look under /sys/devices/system/edac/mc/mc0/. I see ce_count there showing thousands; but all of the ce_count files under csrow[0-7] show zero. Clues, anyone? mark

I see a really good price, and better for quantity, for 3TB drives. Now, I've been down on WD for a couple of years, since I found that they'd protected certain h/d parms from being changed (like TLER). The ones I'm looking at are the Red, which seems to be a new color (at least to me), and one technical review I've read says that they're intended for NAS, etc, and you can adjust those parms. They're *not* supposed to be "enterprise" or server grade, but it sounds like they'd work with RAID. Anyone know anything about them? mark, checking before I buy

Getting confirmation for power button

Using CentOS 5.8: Currently on my workstations, when I press the power button the computer immediately does a 'shutdown -h now' (per /etc/acpid/events/power.conf). Is there a way to change it so that a confirmation dialog comes up, rather than an immediate shutdown? I assume that I am going to need to change that power.conf file to tell some program that the power button's been pressed, rather than making a call to shutdown, but I haven't been able to figure out what program to which I need to make a call. Writing to a symlink on a read-only file system that land on a read-write file system

We've come across a problem with 6.4 kernels that we didn't have with 6.2 kernels - which involves writing to a symlink that is on a read-only file system - but the symlink lands on a read-write file system The following shows the issue: mkdir -p /mnt/tmp mount -t tmpfs -o size=1% none /mnt/tmp rm -f /tmp/file ln -s /tmp/file /mnt/tmp/file mount -o remount,ro /mnt/tmp echo "some text" > /mnt/tmp/file On a machine with a 6.2 kernel, the above works fine - the target of the symlink (/tmp/file) is created etc. with no error But on a machine with a 6.4 kernel, the above fails with: /mnt/tmp/file: Read-only file system. Strace'ing a process that fails gives: open("/mnt/tmp/file", O_WRONLY|O_CREAT|O_TRUNC, 0666) = -1 EROFS (Read-only file system) I don't have a machine with a 6.3 kernel, so I'm not sure when the change in behaviour happened, but does anyone know as to why this change was made in the kernel? I've had a look through the kernel changelog - and the following entry mentions EROFS and read-only file systems: - [fs] vfs: prefer EEXIST to EROFS when creating on an RO filesystem (Eric Sandeen) [878091] I can't access that BZ (878091) entry - so don't know if the above is anything to do with what I'm seeing ... gwenview WITHOUT nepomuk

Does anyone know how to make gwenview *not* try to use nepomuk? I liked it under 5.x, but in 6.x it *constantly* complains about things like tagging is not enabled... but won't open, when I log in, with gwenview running and showing the same picture I'd logged out on. Then there are the random crashes.... Don't need a "semantic" desktop, I know what things are, where they are, or how to find them.... mark

I have setup a CentOS 6.3 VPS with ONLY IPv6 access simply for testing at this point. It browses the Internet with lynx fine on most major sites that are IPv6 enabled. Yum does not seem to work though. Always tries to connect to an IPv4 mirror and gives an error. Is there a way specify an IPv6 mirror to yum?

How to make a network interface come up automatically on link up?

I have a recently installed Mellanox VPI interface in my server. This is an InfiniBand interface, which, through the use of adapters, can also do 10GbE over fiber. I have one of the adapter's two ports configured for 10GbE in this way, with a point to point link to a Mac workstation with a Myricom 10GbE card. I've configured this interface on the Linux box (eth2) using /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth2 , setting its IP address, MTU, subnet, etc. Everything seems to work fine, with a single exception. If I reboot the Mac on the other end, causing the link state of the fiber interface to bounce, the network interface on the Linux box doesn't come back up when the link comes back up. That is, ifconfig shows it as having the link up, but it doesn't do the equivalent of "ifup eth2" when the link comes back, so it doesn't get an IP, the routing table doesn't get updated, etc. So, my question is, how can I make CentOS automatically configure this interface when the link comes back up? Merging os and updates

I've been able to successfully kickstart CentOS 3.9 from the base repo, but no such luck after merging os and updates. I think I did everything right - updated base/comps.xml and regenerated hdlist/hdlist2. Updated the yum repo as well although I'm pretty sure it's not used by anaconda. This is difficult to debug. The setup is running under kvm on a CentOS 6.4 host, and for some reason, a completely headless install fails (--graphics none; virt-viewer complains loudly and dies). A graphical install with vnc looks quite different from newer OSes' ks installs, there is no VC showing package install progress or an interactive shell. I.e. I cannot tell what exactly fails. Yes, there is a specific legacy reason for using 3.9 here.

I'm setting up this huge RAID 6 box. I've always thought of hot spares, but I'm reading things that are comparing RAID 5 with a hot spare to RAID 6, implying that the latter doesn't need one. I *certainly* have enough drives to spare in this RAID box: 42 of 'em, so two questions: should I assign one or more hot spares, and, if so, how many? mark

"Can't find root device" with lvm root after moving drive on CentOS 6.3

I have an 8-core SuperMicro Xeon server with CentOS 6.3. The OS is installed on a 120 GB SSD connected by SATA, the machine also contains an Areca SAS controller with 24 drives connected. The motherboard is a SuperMicro X9DA7. When I installed the OS, I used the default options, which creates an LVM volume group to contain / and /home, and keeps /boot and /boot/efi outside the volume group. The machine is a couple of months old, and has been stable. While installing some new hardware, I decided to also clean up the cabling in the box, since it was a bit messy. In doing this, I probably moved the boot SSD disk to another port on the motherboard (it has a bunch, 2 SATA 6GBps and 6 SATA 3GBps). When I booted the box after this, I got a kernel panic, the typical "Can't find root device". I read some docs, and first tried to boot from a rescue disc and reinstal GRUB, but that didn't change anything. Further Googling got me the rdshell kernel parameter, and that dropped me to a shell when it failed to find the root device. Reading https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/How_to_debug_Dracut_problems , I did the following: # lvm vgscan # lvm vgchange -ay And then # ln -s /dev/mapper/<volumegroup>-<root_volume> /dev/root # exit After this, the box boots up normally, and everything works as it should. However, when I reboot, it again fails to find the root device. So, after all this, my question is, how do I make Dracut (I'm assuming) understand that this LVM volume is my root device and pick it up automatically? And, is there a way to avoid this problem in the future, if I move drives around? Hi, i have a little question but not sure if exist in centos. Theres any way to reotre all centos to default? like a goback or a security backup? im realtive new with this and want to do a full back up of centos before trying to install things. Also i really prefer to run a commands instead of do a fresh install of centos. Theres any like this?

Dear All, I convinced my boss to buy me a new laptop, it arrived today! So now that I finaly have a X86_64 machine, I want to try Kvm. I'm very excited. I Anaconda I selected install as virtual host, but after install, update and reboot I try #[jvermeulen@it root]$ virt-manager Traceback (most recent call last): File "/usr/share/virt-manager/virt-manager.py", line 383, in <module> main() File "/usr/share/virt-manager/virt-manager.py", line 286, in main raise gtk_error RuntimeError: could not open display I googled this, but found very little info about this type of Centos install. partprobe command showing error

Hi, I've created a new partition on /dev/sda on my CentOS machine after which fdisk -l gives output as: Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System /dev/sda1 * 1 13 104391 83 Linux /dev/sda2 14 3500 28009327+ 83 Linux /dev/sda3 3501 6527 24314377+ 83 Linux Now, when I run partprobe I get the following error: Error: Error informing the kernel about modifications to partition /dev/sda3 -- Device or resource busy. This means Linux won't know about any changes you made to /dev/sda3 until you reboot -- so you shouldn't mount it or use it in any way before rebooting. Warning: The kernel was unable to re-read the partition table on /dev/sda (Device or resource busy). This means Linux won't know anything about the modifications you made until you reboot. You should reboot your computer before doing anything with /dev/sda. I'm using parted rpm version "parted-1.8.1-29.el5". Is it some issue with this version or with the way I'm using this command? 2nd NIC troubles

Hi All, I have 2 NICS in this system. CentOS 6.4 eth0 is the virtual IP from PFSense mapping connected to the router, works fine. eth1 is a second NIC that I have assigned a private IP to and connected it to a switch on the private network. I have many other private devices, so I know this setup works. When I connect the cable to the switch and bring up eth1 the system basically stops taking requests. I can no longer SSH in, Websites stop responding, etc. If I walk over to the server and take down eth1, everything works fine. Well, I'm *almost* there on my user's box with the old ATI card. Radeon driver, and I had one mistake, so now we can access both monitors. But... If I enable xinerama, I can have it work as one large screen, but xrandr is disabled (and the system->preferences->display doesn't work). And with xinerama, it still acts as though either it isn't getting 1280x1024 resolution, or the viewport (?) is bigger than the screens, and I have no viewport option. Also, when I shove the mouse off the screen, a portion, an "L" shape of maybe 25% or 30% of the screen, moves offscreen, and I can't make it come back. With xinerama disabled, xrandr is enabled, the system->preferences->display works, and I can move the mouse between monitors... but the systems sees them as separate, with their own menus at the top, and the display GUI only sees one monitor. Annoying, to say the least. Any X experts here that can suggest what I'm missing? inittab - huh what's it good for?

We run a CentOS-5 based hylafax server with external serial modems. We are transitioning to an Asterisk system using IAXmodem running on CentOS-6. On the CentOS-5 system to start the fax modems we added these lines to inittab: # Add fax lines and always ALWAYS run "telinit q" after making a change. fax1:2345:respawn:/usr/sbin/faxgetty ttyS0 fax2:2345:respawn:/usr/sbin/faxgetty ttyS1 On the CentOS-6 host we did this, in accordance with the instructions provided in the various README files and man pages. # send IA00:2345:respawn:/usr/bin/iaxmodem ttyIAX0 # receive mo00:2345:respawn:/usr/sbin/faxgetty ttyIAX0 # send IA01:2345:respawn:/usr/bin/iaxmodem ttyIAX1 # receive mo01:2345:respawn:/usr/sbin/faxgetty ttyIAX1 However, when I do an init q the faxgetty instances do not start. If I run faxgetty from the command line in detached mode for each of them (faxgetty -D ttyIAX0) then they do start. The iaxmodem instances are started from an init.d script as far as I can tell. They appear and disappear with service iaxmodem start and stop in any case and they most certainly do not respawn if the service is stopped. So, my question is: Does inittab have any use on el6 systems? What is its replacement? In other words, how do I accomplish what I am told to do with respect to iaxmodem and faxgetty that formerly worked in inittab and now evidently does not? -- *** E-Mail is NOT a SECURE channel *** James B. nfs4 and idmapd

I'm using CentOS5.9 and mounting a remote directory via NFSv4. The nfs server is OpenIndiana 151.a.7 (i.e. Solaris). Users bin and daemon have each others ID on the oposite system. On OpenIndiana: User: bin; ID=2 User: daemon; ID=1 On CentOS: User: bin; ID=1 User: daemon; ID=2 That means if I create a file as daemon on the client (CentOS), it gets saved on the server as owner bin and it shows back on the client as owner bin. My linux keeps logging me off when I run Firefox (how to debug)?

This is a strange one to me. Just recently, my Centos 6 has been "gentle crashing" where it doesn't crash, per se, but the screen goes black, and the login prompt pops up. It only happens when I run Firefox and it only started happening this morning. However, it has happened a dozen times, and always when Firefox is running. It does NOT happen when Firefox is not running. I haven't tested with Chrome yet; so that's my next test - but - the question I have is: How do I log the events that are causing Centos to log me out of user1 and to present the login screen?

New motherboard - kernel panic

I had to replace the motherboard on one of my CentOS 4 systems and am now getting a kernel panic. When I try to boot up, I get this: Volume group "VolGroup00" not found ERROR: /bin/lvm exited abnormally! (pid 448) mount: error 6 mounting ext3 mount: error 2 mounting none switchroot: mount failed: 22 umount /initrd/dev failed: 2 Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init! (I apologize for any typos, I don't have a way to copy/paste from that screen) I can boot up with the boot CD, go into rescue mode and browse the files, so I know the drives are ok. I found some stuff online saying that I should recreate my initrd from rescue mode if the motherboard changed. I tried this, but am still getting the same results. Suggestions? Thanks, -- Bowie

Regarding : ATI video driver problems

I gather from the discussion on the reference thread that I'll be having quite a time with a MB having an Integrated ATI Radeon HD 3000 graphics chip set and a video card using a Radeon HD 6570 chip set when I try to run CentOS 6.4 on it. I was going to ask if CrossFire works with CentOS, but it appears that the integrated chip set isn't going to work at all. Well, ignoring all that, is CrossFire supported by any of the drivers available for CentOS 6.4? If no then what about SLI support? I don't want to paint myself into a corner by building a computer that I'll never get working to full potential. Anyway, here's my wish list as it stands at the moment. I did a quick test on el5 and el6 with these package, httpd-2.2.3-43.el5.centos httpd-2.2.15-15.el6.centos.1.i686 I kept the configuration as what it is in default. The index page is about 7k, 100 connections per second. I barely find the connection is marked as R. Mostly C and _. This is done by ab from httpd. I also did a quick test with slow attack. It's basically slowing the client itself to collect the data from the server. I did 200 connections per second. My server is ok seems. ATI video driver problems

User got upgraded to 6.4. Graphical mode video fails. It's an AMD (nee ATI) RV620 (FirePro 2260). So I finished upgrading everything, including kmod-fglrx. Based on the xorg.conf's on there, it's been using the fglrx. Now, in Xorg.0.log, it tells me "no supported AMD display adapters were found". I've been on-and-off googling for hours, and can't figure out if the "legacy" kmod-nvidia from elrepo will work: their info *ONLY* lists Radeon cards, and I can't figure out what this damn thing is. Oh, lspci -v tells me it's "ATI device 2343". Anyone know what this card is like (AMD shows three different models of the same name, and I have no idea which it is, and none uses a Radeon name), and what driver I might use, or do I have to downgrade X.... mark, extremely tired of his user's machine

Arch = x86_64 OS = CentOS-6.3 (FreePBX) Asterisk = 11.3.0 (FreePBX) Hylafax+ = 5.5.3 (epel) I am installing an Asterisk server with the intent of having it act as our fax server. The Asterisk system was installed using the current FreePBX distro which is reputedly based on CentOS-6.3. I have installed Hylafax+ from epel and I have built and packaged IAXModem-1.2.0 for CentOS-6 using mock and installed that on the Asterisk host. I am past the point of setting up Asterisk and configuring extensions and users. I am able to place and receive internal calls to and from SIP devices and place and receive external calls over a PSTN analogue trunk. The echo generated by the SIP clients is terrible but that problem can wait until I get to dealing with voice service implementation. At the moment I am trying to get Hylafax configured. I have done this in the past albeit for systems using external serial modems. I am at the point of running the faxstup utility which builds the necessary hylafax configuration files. I am getting these errors from the utility: Setting Ghostscript font path in /etc/hylafax/hyla.conf. Warning: /usr/local/lib/ghostscript/fonts does not exist or is not a directory! The directory /usr/local/lib/ghostscript/fonts does not exist or this file is not a directory. This is the directory where the HylaFAX client applications expect to locate font metric information to use in formatting ASCII text for submission as facsimile. Without this information HylaFAX may generate illegible facsimile from ASCII text. Warning: /usr/share/ghostscript/8.70/Resource/Font does not exist or is not a directory! Though I've used version control systems before and even set up a couple over the years, and though it was simple to setup a github repository (which I did just a couple minutes ago), I can't figure out how to upload the first file to it. I'm logged in, on the repository's home page, but can't see an option for that. I also read instructions for set up on the web and the git manpage, but no help there. Anybody here know to put a code file into the repository? Thanks.

Greetings, What's the process for requesting minor enhancements to packages? Currently, CentOS dovecot rpms ship w/o having tcp_wrappers enabled; to have dovecot compiled with tcp_wrappers requires adding one directive to the to the dovecot.spec file in the srpm. If the directive isn't there, then any dovecot upgrades via YUM/RPM require first to have the RPMs recompiled before doing the upgrade. rsync - why not copying all files?

I am doing a new setup, got most of the files in place from other places and then ran my rsync backup from the command line before putting it in crontab. Here is the rsync: rsync -ah --stats --delete /home/ /mnt/sdc1/backups/homebase/home Note that the directory ..../homebase/home did not exist prior to this command; it created it. So here are the stats: Number of files: 6190 Number of files transferred: 5944 Total file size: 4.25G bytes Total transferred file size: 4.25G bytes Literal data: 4.25G bytes Matched data: 0 bytes File list size: 263.95K File list generation time: 0.001 seconds File list transfer time: 0.000 seconds Total bytes sent: 4.25G Total bytes received: 113.93K sent 4.25G bytes received 113.93K bytes 29.60M bytes/sec total size is 4.25G speedup is 1.00 Why would files transferred be less than the number of files? For example, is there some option I need to move hidden files? I do not believe there are any symlinks under /home. Thanks for any help in puzzling this out. I would be greatly upset if some key file was not being backed up.

Hello all, Let's say I have an OpenVPN (v2) server sitting on a Linux machine with the IP address of, say, 192.168.10.1o. We are talking real address, assigned to a NIC on the machine. Now let us say the OpenVPN server hands out IP's in the 192.168.20.0/24range. And let us say that I want the machines able to reach the VPN server to be able to route to the machines available via the VPN. So, for instance, 192.168.10.5 should be able to ping 192.168.20.6 assuming the latter is one of the VPN clients. So here is my question: is there a VPN setting that would facilitate that? It seems like is is trivial enough to allow the VPN clients to route out through the VPN server - but trying to facilitate the reverse I got stuck. Thanks in advance for any help. Cheers, Boris.

xfsaild causing load, and stuck in D state - Centos 6.4 x64

PowerEdge 2850 with PERC SCSI RAID controller. 16GB RAM Dual Intel(R) Xeon(TM) CPU 3.00GHz Using megaraid driver and xfs on 3x 300GB SCSI disks as /dev/sdb (total 572GB) (RAID-5) Stock Centos 6.4 x64, everything updated. Kernel : 2.6.32-358.2.1.el6.x86_64 #1 SMP My Load always shows : top - 10:30:21 up 23:09, 1 users, load average: 0.99, 0.96, 0.79 yet there is no services what-so-ever doing anything. Using PowerTOP I can see that xfsaild is causing second most wake-ups (after kernel core : hrtimer_start (tick_sched_timer) ) < Detailed C-state information is not P-states (frequencies) 3.00 Ghz 100.0% 1500 Mhz 0.0% 1125 Mhz 0.0% 750 Mhz 0.0% 375 Mhz 0.0% Wakeups-from-idle per second : 125.1 interval: 10.0s no ACPI power usage estimate available Top causes for wake-ups: 47.7% (119.6) <kernel core> : hrtimer_start (tick_sched_timer) 39.9% (100.0) xfsaild/sdb1 : xfsaild (process_timeout) Again, using TOP I can see that xfsaild is stuck in D state. It never changes. 10050 root 20 0 0 0 0 D 0.0 0.0 0:01.17 xfsaild/sdb1 My only way to fix this, is either rebooting the machine, unmounting the volume and mounting it back online. I've been rsyncing data twice between this server and another one. The rsync process takes about 30m-1hour. After the rsync operation I see that the xfsaild is stuck in D State and my Load is near 1.00. I'v had no problem what-so-ever on centos 6.3 or early versions on other servers. Any thoughts ? We build a storage unit that anyone using Centos can build. It is based on the 3ware 9750-16 controller. It has 16 x 2 TB Sata 6 gb/s disks. We always set it up as a 15 disk RAID 6 array and a hot spare. We have seen multiple instances were the A/C has gone off but the customer's UPS kept the systems running for an hour or two with no cooling. Once the ambient temperature goes above 40C you are stressing all the disks in the array. I ramble about this BECAUSE we have seen many RAID 5 arrays fail while rebuilding with a hot spare and then loose all the data. The chances of this happening on a R6 array are much much lower. Now for performance numbers: 550 MB/SEC on writes and 1150 MB/SEC on reads. A unit like this can support any type of I/O you want to put into it as Centos will usually either have thedrivers built in or you can add then easily. Also the rebuild time for a 50 TB array is about 12 hours while the array is in use and online. But during this time there is little or no degradation in performance. The down side is the cost of the controller. If anyone has questions about this I would be glad to answer them off line : at seth at integratedsolutions dot org. How to change 'fstab' when you cannot boot the machine?

Hello All, So My Drobo finished formatting and I added an entry to fstab for it and now I cannot boot the machine. I get an error about fsck.ext3: is a directory while trying to open /drobo and then a mention of a valid super block I had mounted the Drobo as /drobo and in 'fstab' I copied the line for '/' changing to ext3 where it was ext4. I have made a mistake I cannot fix it because trying to edit fstab results in a "read only file system message" Can anyone help me learn how to recover? Jason

My hesitation with the 'Rescue installed system' sort of reminds me of Windows where this option will go and blindly copy new versions of files to a system to get it to boot. Hello All, Try as I might, I cannot get Zimbra 8.0.3 to install on CentOS 6.4, even with --platform override. I followed some tutorials even that show the result working and nada. Can anyone suggest a good setup for e-mails erving, calendaring, web mail? Web mail is particularly important for my wife so she can check e-mail when she is at work. Jason

Yes, really. I've got hundreds of the damn things here at home, and I want to go through them and get rid of them all. But... to do that I want to read them. I have both a 5.25" and a 3.5" drive, both are plugged in, but in the BIOS, all I see is the 3.5". Fine, I figure I'll take care of those. Nope. I see /dev/fd0 once I've booted up, but neither konqueror nor mount nor fdisk works - the latter telling me that /dev/fd0 is not a valid block device. After some googling, I tried modprobe floppy, which installed it, but still no joy. Anyone have a clue? mark

Formatting a USB Drive

Hi All, I have a Drobo, connected to a CentOS 6.4 box. The box sees it as /dev/sdg. I want to format it ext3 (as they dont support ext4) but when I try I get: # fdisk -u /dev/sdg WARNING: GPT (GUID Partition Table) detected on '/dev/sdg'! The util fdisk doesn't support GPT. Use GNU Parted. WARNING: The size of this disk is 17.6 TB (17592186044416 bytes). DOS partition table format can not be used on drives for volumes larger than (2199023255040 bytes) for 512-byte sectors. Use parted(1) and GUID partition table format (GPT). WARNING: DOS-compatible mode is deprecated. It's strongly recommended to switch off the mode (command 'c'). So I run: # parted GNU Parted 2.1 Using /dev/sda Welcome to GNU Parted! Type 'help' to view a list of commands. (parted) select /dev/sdg Using /dev/sdg (parted) print Model: DROBO DroboPro (scsi) Disk /dev/sdg: 17.6TB Sector size (logical/physical): 512B/512B Partition Table: gpt Number Start End Size File system Name Flags (parted) and looking at an example of creating a partition: (parted) mkpart primary 106 16179 I dont know what to do next since I dont see any partitions listed. I dont know what do to for the start and end point, although the man page says "size in MB". Do I just say 0 to (and convert 16.0TB to MB? Yes, I know it says 17.6 TB but this model drobo can only support partitions up to 16tb without making a second partition. Can anyone provide some advice on that I am missing conceptually? Jason

Hi, all: I'm playing with Gre Tunnel programming in centos 6. I wrote my program in these steps: a, open /dev/net/tun device and ioctl with TUNSETIFF, get fd to tun device, say "tun0"; b, create one socket and use it to set tun0's ip address, namyly SIOCSIFADDR and SIOCSIFDSTADDR; and then turn it up; c, create one raw socket to send things which got from the tun0 device to other machine, and to receive packages which should be feeded into the tun0 device; Finally, I ran the program in two machines, say MA and MB, synchronously, and set route info in MA and MB too. Is the raw package been sent up into gre protocol while caught by my program?? I have seen ICMP_PORT_UNREACH stuff been placed in ip_gre.c kernel code, but say it is "Impossible event". So, what's wrong, have I missed something in my program? Any suggestions are appreciated, thanks.

About centos fresh install

Hi, first of all i want to thank you all that do this help. Without this i cold never put my own webserver. Now my question. I know when i have to install some software, they recommend a "fresh" install of centos, but my provider (we have server via internet and webmin) every fresh install says that i need to pay like 50$ ( alittle expensive for me). Im live i Costa RIca and here internet sucks thats why i use panama server. Now my question is: theres any form to restore to "default" a centos server? like windows 8 or like norton goback? i searh a lot via google but not sure if theres no way or i dont know how to search it. Sorry for my bad english. Hope could help me this time
