SSD for Centos SWAP /tmp & /var/ partition

Has anyone actually used a SSD in a Centos setup? My little experiment with a s/h WD drive for /tmp and SWAP partitions kicked the bucket on Wednesday, when the poor WD drive caught the click-of-death. It was a s/h drive to start with and lasted about 4 months. But that was without the /var/log/ partition being written to it, as I mounted that back onto /var/log from the original drive. So I had to install another (WD) drive, and repartion it and rebuild my RPM package database, from the backed-up Packages file. That seems to be all OK now. I'm wondering if it would be a good idea to use a new SSD for moving all the disk i/o to, that Linux likes to do so often. Plus putting SWAP onto a decent SSD should speed things up somewhat. Here's a short video of a laptop fitted with a SSD drive booting macOS, compared to a similar laptop booting from the standard HDD. The laptop with the SSD boots and loads some apps in 28 seconds. HI, Does anybody know of a good DVD transcoder/ripper which runs on Stream 9/10. I've used HandBrake up to now but it doesn't appear to be in the usual third party repos, EPEL or RPMFusion. I tried flatpak but the version there doesn't include libdvdcss so it can't decode commercial music DVDs. Then I tried snap but there is no snap package available. Hi, have you ever heard of a recruitment firm going so far as to pursue legal action against an employer for failing to provide feedback or progress a candidate's application? An employer refused to provide feedback or progress with a candidate; but instead immediately, abruptly and suspiciously cancelled their contract with the recruitment firm. This is a recruitment firm that had a good track record. They are headhunters rather than recruiters. They would meet with the hiring managers to understand the requirement, go to market, and proactively headhunt candidates. This process involves crafting compelling narratives around the employer and their business to secure candidate interest and engagement. Not your jump on linkedin and send messages. The recruitment firm experienced an issue with one manager that was brought to the attention of HR and the CTO (recently retired). Issue such as a) Unfounded reasons for rejecting qualified applicants; b) Frequent changes in hiring location preferences; c) Inappropriate comments to the recruiter about a candidate; d) Allegedly describing the job to a candidate during an interview as "shovelling horse shit" . This manager may now have more influence. The recruitment firm has written a one-page letter to the employer but the employer has sent a 4 page reply back. The employer's letter also states that they have no obligation or reason to provide feedback, engage in further communication, or follow up on the candidate(s) introduced. They have gone so far as to write a four page letter defending their position in response to the recruitment firms-one page letter. Does the employer's response not sound fishy to people? Furthermore the recruitment firm attempted to speak with the HR person that cancelled the contract and they refused to remark on the candidates introduced BUT they did remark on the recruitment consultants assumed skin color and gender as well reference their business as a "one-man band". This is an unfolding story but I think it is about time someone did something about employers ghosting candidates. // James

I'm still trying to get away from Centos 6 but I have to get some other things working first so the business keeps running. Now I'm trying to get a new IP address for a Windows 10 PC. No matter what I do, it continues to get the same old address. The C6 DHCP server has a defined static IP address for this PC based on its MAC address. I've deleted all references to the old address in /var/lib/dhcpd/dhcpd.leases and restarted dhcpd. I've found a way to get W10 to forget its old address and send DHCPDISCOVER to C6. But the C6 server responds by offering the old address, not the defined static address. Where is it keeping this old information? Gluster issue with qcow2 files?

I have two virtually identical hardware boxes which report qcow2 sizes differently: -> $ du -xh /00-VMsy//enc.vdb.back1.proxmox.qcow2 2.9G /00-VMsy//enc.vdb.back1.proxmox.qcow2 -> $ du -xh /00-VMsy//enc.vdb.back1.proxmox.qcow2 71G /00-VMsy//enc.vdb.back1.proxmox.qcow2 I checked I though obvious places: ext4 header shows the same features, I also looked at NVMes which all are formated with the same block size, mountpoins mount the same way. But, I must be still missing something... trivial? I'm thinking - perhaps some kernel tunables - but if so, which ones I cannot find. 'ls' reports the same everywhere, virtual 71G size. Problems with CentOS 8 kickstart

Hi All, I am having problems with a kickstart install of CentOS 8 When I try to do a completely automated install using PXE/UEFI it get to the point where it reads the kickstart config file. Samba on Centos 6

Sorry to address such an old and obsolete system. A customer is migrating up from Centos 6 but needs to keep it working a little while longer. The issue now is that Windows users are unable to map a drive letter to a Centos directory. When they go to map the drive (to "\\ip\public"), Windows says the connection is rejected, with no further details. I presume some configuration is set wrong but I haven't been able to find it after reading man pages and Google stuff. Samba is installed and so is samba-swat. But I can't get port 901 open so I can verify proper configuration of SMB. I encrypt: -> $ systemd-cryptenroll --tpm2-device=auto --tpm2-pcrs=0+7 /dev/nvme0n1p3 but unless there is only one keyslot (my even have any ID) or perhaps if it was first - but have not tired it - then 'cryptset' does not open the device @boot. From what I understand 'cryptsetup' tires all keyslots - no matter TPM provider/device is absent - I was thinking of 'timeout' but cryptsetup does not report any such issues, simply boot stops, waiting for a passphrase. I other words: it seems I need to remove all keyslots, old ones, enrolled in the past for which TPMs do not exists any more, except for the one I know is valid, only then system boots with TPM, no passphrase prompt. any thoughts much appreciated. many thanks, L.

Hi My second question is - how is EPEL doing somebody knows? I wonder is it still early ? or something else is up. I'm asking because it seems that quite a few & useful - to me at least - packages are absent. eg.: lsyncd, monit, probably more, but one whose absence rose my eyebrow is 'certbot' So I guess I wonder: should I go on a "discovery" process & then report to BZ, or perhaps some major changes to "repos" took place while I was absent. thanks, L.

Issues booting centos7 [dracut is failing to enable centos/root, centos/swap LVs]

Hello, I'm having a strange problem booting a new centos7 installation. Below some background on this. [I have attached the tech details at the bottom of this message] I started a new CentOS7 installation on a VM, so far all good, o/s boots fine. Then I decided to increase VM disk size (initially was 10G) to 13G. Powered off the VM, increased the vhd via the hypervisor, booted from CentOS livecd, selected "recover my centos installation". Then I used the following sequence of commands to make the new vhd size "visible" to the o/s ... - ran fdisk /dev/sda and deleted partition 2. (This is the LVM partition where the o/s is stored. The first partition is /boot [xfs] partition *non lvm*.) - created a new partition with same starting sector as before deleting it, but a different ending sector (to reflect to the increased space). - set partition type to 8e (lvm), saved settings and exit. - ran pvresize and lvresize to make new space visible to the o/s.All good, I can see the space increase on 'lvdisplay centos/root'. - ran 'mount /dev/mapper/centos-root /mnt/root' to temporarily mount the o/s partition. - ran 'xfs_growfs /mnt/root' to resize the o/s fs to the new size. It was successful and I could actually chroot to the o/s and verify new disk size. - rebooted and tried to boot from hdd this time. Grub menu shows up and loads default kernel (3.10.0-862.9.1.el7.x86_64). - after initial kernel boot up process, booting continues to initrd and then it's where the problem starts... - looks like dracut has issues locating/enabling /dev/mapper/centos-root (lv) and as a result it cannot boot to the 'real' root fs (/). - while in dracut shell, I execute the following command sequence: 1. lvm lvchange -ay /dev/centos/root 2. lvm lvchange -ay /dev/centos/swap 3. ln -s /dev/mapper/centos-root /dev/root 4. exit ...and the o/s boots fine...so looks like the pv,vg,lv is detected properly while in initrd, but somehow dracut has difficulties enabling the root,swap LVs ? - While in o/s, I rebuild initrd by using: 'dracut -f -v -a lvm' Note, I have to use '-a lvm' as for some reason, if don't, the lvm utils (lvm,lvm_scan) are not being included to the initrd, not sure why this happens. After rebooting, same thing happens, I have to manually boot the system via dracut shell. I'm a bit stuck at this point, any clues what I'm doing wrong in here ? Where can I find the archive kernel rpm packages for Centos stream 9

I can only find the Centos stream 9 kernel rpm package from kernel-5.14.0-479.el9.x86_64.rpm to kernel-5.14.0-503.el9.x86_64.rpm, which were created in two months period? Where is the kernel which is older, such as 5.14.0-419.el9.x86_64, 5.14.0-457.el9.x86_64. Do we have a archive site or something like centos-vault to find the old centos 9 stream rpm packages? Problem installing c10s

I'm attempting a kickstart install of c10s and I'm seeing it try to download the following URL: https://infrastructure.fedoraproject.org/repo/centos/centos-10/AppStream/x8… which fails due to being behind a proxy. This URL is not any of the repo URLs that I specified in my kickstart file. Hi all, I know I'm a bit late to ask this, but did the CentOS 7 installer kernel (here now https://vault.centos.org/7.9.2009/os/x86_64/images/pxeboot/) ever support setting an IPv4 AND an IPv6 address on the same interface? I've done some testing in a VM where setting EITHER IPv4 OR IPv6 works, but not both on the same interface, but is it possible to have dual stack settings applied to one interface via the kernel parameters? Assume that I have no ability to have a kickstart file locally, otherwise this could be worked around :/ Thanks

Issue with yum - "Could not resolve host: mirrorlist.centos.org"

Dear CentOS Community, I am experiencing an issue when attempting to install packages using yum on CentOS 7. When I run the command yum install vim -y, I receive the following error message: Loaded plugins: fastestmirror Determining fastest mirrors Could not retrieve mirrorlist http://mirrorlist.centos.org/?release=7&arch=x86_64&repo=os&infra=stock error was 14: curl#6 - "Could not resolve host: mirrorlist.centos.org; Unknown error" One of the configured repositories failed (Unknown), and yum doesn't have enough cached data to continue. At this point the only safe thing yum can do is fail. There are a few ways to work "fix" this: 1. Contact the upstream for the repository and get them to fix the problem. 2. Reconfigure the baseurl/etc. for the repository, to point to a working upstream. This is most often useful if you are using a newer distribution release than is supported by the repository (and the packages for the previous distribution release still work). 3. Run the command with the repository temporarily disabled yum --disablerepo=<repoid> ... 4. Disable the repository permanently, so yum won't use it by default. Yum will then just ignore the repository until you permanently enable it again or use --enablerepo for temporary usage: yum-config-manager --disable <repoid> or subscription-manager repos --disable=<repoid> 5. Configure the failing repository to be skipped, if it is unavailable. Note that yum will try to contact the repo. when it runs most commands, so will have to try and fail each time (and thus. yum will be be much slower). If it is a very temporary problem though, this is often a nice compromise: yum-config-manager --save --setopt=<repoid>.skip_if_unavailable=true Cannot find a valid baseurl for repo: base/7/x86_64 It seems there is an issue with the baseurl for the repository. I have already checked my network connection and it is working properly. I also tried updating the DNS configuration and clearing the yum cache, but the issue persists. Finding kernel builds between releases

Can someone point me to where I might be able to find or recreate kernel-4.18.0 builds for c8s between the 408 and 448 releases? Is there a way to find a list of patches that make up each intermediate build? I can see a list of individual commit messages for each build in the spec file changelog, but I have not found a place to see the associated changesets.

Hello, I have no previous experience with CentOS and network administration. Therefore, I would like to emphasize that my questions may be at a basic level. I am currently working on a project and my goal is to be able to access and transfer files between my CentOS 7 computer and a Windows computer over different networks. My CentOS 7 computer is connected to the internet via ethernet via a modem, which has a static IP address (which I can provide if needed). I have also assigned a static IP address to the CentOS 7 computer. My goal is to use my Windows computer to remotely connect to my CentOS computer over different networks and transfer files. Hi, As discussed multiple times on various lists, CentOS Linux 7 will go EOL in two weeks (end of June) and so that means that various services running on CentOS 7 will disappear too . Apart from internal build infra for centos 7 itself (non public) that will be decommissioned, here are some services that will disappear: # mirrorlist.centos.org As the whole backend/frontend infra is running on centos 7 , and that everything Stream related (and now SIGs) was migrated to use mirrormanager (hosted by Fedora infra team), there was no reason to migrate/maintain it as all content will be EOL. # forums.centos.org Per discussion with the forums moderators, it will be powered off completely (not migrated) # torrent.centos.org In the past we used to provide .torrent for various centos linux releases, but it stopped with CentOS Stream. CentOS Stream 8 EOL

As announced multiple times (see https://blog.centos.org/2023/04/end-dates-are-coming-for-centos-stream-8-an…) , CentOS Stream 8 reached now EOL (End Of Life) That means that all content was removed from http://mirror.centos.org/centos/8-stream/ (and so from downstream third-party mirrors) earlier today. The latest compose from today was archived to Vault (https://vault.centos.org/8-stream/) and will *never* receive any more update (security or else) SIGs content was also archived to same place, and koji/buildsystem tags "locked down". Phantom name server

I have a CentOS stream 8 system (C8) which runs its own internal name server (BIND 9). In the past, it used an external name server on another machine but that server has been stopped. The resolv.conf file on C8 has been modified to remove the reference to the old server and NetworkManager has been restarted. However, CUPS and other programs on C8 continue to send queries to the old server, all of which eventually time out (of course). The bogus queries to the old server are answered with ICMP destination/port unreachable, confirming that the old name server is not running. But these bogus queries take time and the delays are very annoying. I've also restarted CUPS without effect. There are no references to the old server in /etc/named.conf, but there are references to the subnet it was on as there are other machines there that need to use the new name server. I haven't yet rebooted C8 but I'm prepared if necessary. Is there something else I should do before rebooting C8? RDO Caracal 2024.1 Released The RDO community is pleased to announce the general availability of the RDO build for OpenStack 2024.1 Caracal for RPM-based distributions, CentOS Stream and Red Hat Enterprise Linux. RDO is suitable for building private, public, and hybrid clouds. Caracal is the 29th release from the OpenStack project, which is the work of more than 1,000 contributors from around the world. The release is already available for CentOS Stream 9 on the CentOS mirror network in: http://mirror.stream.centos.org/SIGs/9-stream/cloud/x86_64/openstack-caraca… The RDO community project curates, packages, builds, tests and maintains a complete OpenStack component set for RHEL and CentOS Stream and is a member of the CentOS Cloud SIG. The Cloud SIG focuses on delivering a great user experience for CentOS users looking to build and maintain their own on-premise, public or hybrid clouds. All work on RDO and on the downstream release, Red Hat OpenStack Platform, is 100% open source, with all code changes going upstream first. The highlights of the broader upstream OpenStack project may be read via https://releases.openstack.org/caracal/highlights.html but here are some highlights: - Drivers with inactive CI were marked unsupported including Windows iSCSI Driver, Windows SMB Driver, Dell SC Series Storage Driver (iSCSI, FC), Dell VNX Storage Driver (FC, iSCSI) and Dell XtremeIO Storage Driver (iSCSI, FC). - New driver features were added, notably, Fujitsu ETERNUS DX extend volume on RAID group, Pure Storage synchronous replication, NetApp iSCSI LUN space allocation, Dell PowerFlex Active-Active support, Dell PowerMax configurable SRDF snapshots. - Designate now supports Catalog Zones (RFC 9432). This can improve the scalability of Designate pools managing a large number of zones and significantly reduce the provisioning time when adding additional DNS servers to a Designate pool. - Horizon now uses Django 4.2 as default and dropped Django 3.2 support. - Ironic has enabled RBAC support by default by changing the default values of [oslo_policy]enforce_scope and [oslo_policy]enforce_new_defaults to True. Additionally, we added [DEFAULT]rbac_service_project_name to define a project where users in that project are treated as having a service role. Please see Ironic release notes for full details. - Ironic has added the ability to drain active tasks from a conductor before shutdown. Sending a SIGUSR2 signal to an ironic-conductor will now attempt to complete running tasks with a timeout of [DEFAULT]drain_shutdown_timeout. No new tasks will be started on the conductor while it’s draining. - Support was added for the external-gateway-multihoming API extension. The L3 service plugins supporting it can now create multiple gateway ports per router. It is currently limited to the L3 OVN plugin. OpenStack Caracal is marked as Skip Level Upgrade Release Process or SLURP. According to this model ( https://governance.openstack.org/tc/resolutions/20220210-release-cadence-ad…) this means that upgrades will only be supported from the Antelope 2023.1 release. RDO Caracal 2024.1 has been built and tested with the recently released Ceph 18.2.0 Reef version (https://docs.ceph.com/en/latest/releases/reef/) which has been published by the CentOS Storage SIG in the official CentOS repositories. *Note:* Follow the instructions in [RDO documentation]( https://www.rdoproject.org/install/install-with-ceph/) to install OpenStack and Ceph services in the same host. During Caracal cycle, some projects have been retired or declared inactive upstream. Dear all --- I DO NOT want tigervnc on my system! I've done what I can changing dnf parameters on uninstall. If I try to deinstall it, it absolutely, positively wants to UNINSTALL anaconda no matter what options I provide. Running CentOS 8, one of the 4.18 xxxxx Any solutions? -- --- Kay Schenk

If Johnny Hughes's solution works for him and he is happy with it, that is great -- more power to him. (The FAQ includes a write up of Johnny's solution.) I have two replies. 1) Back a couple of months ago, as a test, I tried his solution, and the screen on my Mag DX1495 still went blank with the two nVIDIA cards that I tested. 2) I would rather just plug in a card which works right out of the box on a standard, SUPPORTED kernel, than to go through all the complicated steps in Johnny's solution. But this is just my personal preference. I can use the nVIDIA cards in Linux with compatible monitors or in Windows with any monitor (as far as I know). BTW, the computer on which I am writing this email runs CentOS, and with this Acer 77c monitor, I am using an nVIDIA GeForce display card -- it works fine with THIS hardware. To begin with -- drivers *generally* do not vary between distributions of linux. So, the fact that your card "doesn't work" with CentOS means that something else went wrong -- not that the drivers don't exist, or don't function properly. First of all, I'd be interested to see where your conclusion that your monitor doesn't work with an nVidia card in linux came from -- what exactly did you experience/test to come to this statement? I don't know anything about Kudzu, but, let me tell you, the nVidia Riva TNT 2 is ABSOLUTELY supported by the linux kernel -- and XFree86 ABSOLUTELY runs on it. If it's not working on your system, instead of making conclusions about Linux as a whole, understand that there are probably issues with the configuration files you either manually wrote, or the programs CentOS/RHEL bundles with the distro did. nVidia cards have the absolute best support under linux of any video card -- and I highly doubt what you experienced was a driver issue -- if it was, it was because of some mangled patch that RedHat applied, because the driver for nVidia TNTs is used by tens of thousands of Linux users.
