systemd alias for SMTP provider (and other services supplied by alternative providers)

I just finished adding a custom service to send an email on system shutdown/startup: <https://github.com/SpareSimian/bootmail> I ended up coding an After for postfix.service on CentOS 8 so the mail would get delivered before the system shut down. (I think I might need a delay, too, to allow the message to finish shipping to the monitoring server across the network.) I'd like to be able to use the same unit file on older systems that use sendmail, and I know there are other packages that provide SMTP and local mail. So it would be desirable to have an Alias for those services. I'm using CentOS 8 on my latest system and 7 on older systems. Is this perhaps already present in a newer systemd commit? Is there a registry for well-known aliases for package writers? With CentOS/RHEL/Fedora allowing multiple options for several packages through its alternatives system, this seems like a natural need.

RH portal shows more when logged out

I was looking into the system's sync/shutdown/halt user accounts and found this page: <https://access.redhat.com/solutions/44682#comments> I wanted to reply to the comments I found there so I logged in. Now I can't see the comments or otherwise interact with the page. I'm using Chrome on Win10-x64 and disabled my ad blocker (uBlock Origin). I tried opening the page in an incognito window, and again I can see the comments while logged out. The same thing happens with Firefox. (This looks like a handy way to allow those with physical access to shutdown my system in an emergency. The next problem is how to restrict such logins to the console, and not allow them via ssh.)

Prevent a particular kernel from being deleted

Somewhat related to my inquiry earlier today about the disappearing sound card, I just got to wondering if there's a way to "pin" the kernel that works with the soundcard such that it won't be deleted with future updates until and unless there's a future kernel released that solves the sound card issue. "dnf versionlock" appears to almost do what I want, but it just locks a package to a particular version and doesn't allow it to be upgraded past that. I'd like to be able to install updated kernels as they are released, but somehow tell dnf to never delete kernel version 4.18.0-240.22.1.el8_3.x86_64. In the normal course of events that kernel would be deleted after a certain number of kernels are installed afterward (as specified by the installonly_limit number in /etc/dnf/dnf.conf. As per my email in April - https://lists.centos.org/pipermail/centos-devel/2021-April/076769.html - and per the approval of the Board of Directors, we have published the new CentOS Community Code of Conduct: https://www.centos.org/code-of-conduct/ This Code of Conduct is in effect immediately, and the reporting process described in there is in effect immediately. One note: The doc says that it is "a living document and will be updated when and if it is deemed necessary." One change that we forsee very soon is that, rather than me, as Community Architect, being the sole responsible party for reporting CoC incidents, I will be assembling a small CoC committee. While I have identified some of the people who will be part of that committee, I thought it was good to go ahead and publish the CoC as is, and modify it once that committee is all in place. Static configuration: prevent /etc/resolv.conf from being overwritten on first reboot

Hi, Here's something that's puzzling me. Starting from a minimal installation of CentOS 7, network configuration is DHCP. I'm launching nmtui to define a static configuration. I'm providing the IP address as well as the gateway, but no DNS server. I'm quitting nmtui and I'm editing /etc/resolv.conf to provide my DNS server: # /etc/resolv.conf nameserver 192.168.0.254 I reboot my server, and I don't know why, but my /etc/resolv.conf has been overwritten: # Generated by NetworkManager So I edit this file again: # /etc/resolv.conf nameserver 192.168.0.254 And starting from here, it works, meaning /etc/resolv.conf is not overwritten on subsequent reboots. Q: how can I prevent /etc/resolv.conf from being overwritten on the initial reboot? I vaguely remember having to kill some process before editing it, but unfortunately I don't remember which one. Upgrade to 8.4 .2105 Problems

The yum upgrade from 8.3 to 8.4 on my main machine looked as if it was working fine so I went to have a coffee. When I came back the screens were blank so I don't know what happened. On rebooting the screens are still blank. I have two graphics cards running three displays. I have a "rescue" system on the same machine that upgraded from 8.3 to 8.4 fine. The 3 screens work fine on this. I am not sure the upgrade completed properly. For example the new kernel: vmlinuz-4.18.0-305.3.1.el8.x86_64 was not present in /boot. Even worse, "yum upgrade" said there was nothing to do and would not install it. I installed the kernel package manually. /etc/redhat-release says CentOS Linux release 8.4.2105 My main question is: Where are the config files for the screen(s). This used to be something like /etc/X11/xorg.conf. Since I have a working rescue system my current plan is to compare/copy the config files. Suggestions please as to where I should start. Sound card disappears on Acer laptop with latest kernel

4.18.0-240.22.1.el8_3.x86_64 Sound works as expected. 4.18.0-305.3.1.el8.x86_64 only "dummy output" shows up under the Sound Preferences on the desktop. I guess there's a kernel bug somewhere that's causing the driver for that soundcard to not load? Hello All, At the moment im using http://mirror.centos.org/centos/8/ repo on my CentOS 8 host and I noticed, that im missing quite many new packages/updates what 8.4.2105 repo contains. Mirrors Sync

Dear All, Is there an issue with some mirrors not syncing properly ? My colleague is reporting , that some mirrors are receiving updates and others are not receiving packages. Some are, according to him, are not receiving updates since March. Is there an issue at the moment ? Any information is very welcome. CentOS 7 getssl script

I am using the getssl script to add a certificate to my server. The script is automatically adding a SANS www.myserver.com when I do not have a www.myserver.com - just simply the myserver.com How can I tell getssl to "not add that SANS" entry ? Thanks, Jerry

kmod removal

Sometime ago I thought I needed kmod-wl to support a new wireless card. Turns out I didn't need to do that. Now I'd like to remove kmod entirely. But when I try I get this: [root@ws1 etc]# dnf remove kmod Error: Problem: The operation would result in removing the following protected packages: systemd-udev (try to add '--skip-broken' to skip uninstallable packages) I am sure I don't want to remove systemd-udev, so I am a loss. I did disable akmods: systemctl disable akmods But I still see that kmod-wl is built each time the kernal is updated. Any suggestions where I can find out how to remove kmod. Note that searching the internet only brings me info on removing kmod-nvidia, and mostly on ubuntu, and they are no help because mostly what they discuss is how get back to neuveau. Even docs I've found that discuss how to install kmod on CentOS say nothing about removal. Emmett

non-functioning printer

In an attempt to diagnose a friend's HP Deskjet D1420, I'm running a Centos 6.10 LiveDVD. The readily visible symptom is that it will accept a job and claim to be printing it, but nothing ever gets printed, not even a test page. The same happens on her Ubuntu system. I recently learned that a blinking power light means that the printer is complaining about something. Where on a Deskjet D1420 could an error message possibly appear? Does it mean this message in /var/cups/error_log? E [13/May/2021:15:18:53 -0400] [CGI] Unable to create avahi client: Resource temporarily unavailable E [13/May/2021:15:18:53 -0400] [cups-deviced] PID 2094 (dnssd) stopped with status 1! Would the presence or absence of whatever avahi is cause the printer to complain? The printer used to print. The hardware connection has not changed in years. CentOS IRC channels moving to irc.libera.chat

TL;DR: #centos and #centos-* are moving to libera.chat Over the past few days, there has been some upheaval on the Frenode IRC network, resulting in a number of the staff members quitting and starting a new IRC network. I wont attempt to explain all the details here, but you can read more at https://kline.sh which also links to other sources. The various ops have discussed the situation, and we intend to migrate all of the various #centos-* channels from Freenode over to irc.libera.chat over the coming days. This will take time, since libera is still spinning up, and some servers are moving from one network to the other. As libera is still in the early stages of setup, you may have significantly more timeouts/disconnects, netsplits and other issues for now. Until the new network is fully stable, we'll all continue to be present in the Freenode chanels. Please bring further questions to the IRC channels (on either network).

Trying to build enca

Hi, I want to get vlc or mplayer to work on CentOS 8. For this I need enca to beinstalled. So I took it from Fedora 31 and tried to build the rpm. CentOS 7: samba 4.10.x: smbd daemon cannot free space used from the spool temp file removed

After a while, the /var filesystem is full because the smbd samba daemon cannot release the space of job files removed: To release this space I must restart the service or kill -15 the process that already use this file. Using Cgroups in CentOS-7

Hi, I want to limit CPUQuota and Memory using "Cgroups". After reading some documents, it seems I need to modify "user.slice" systemd file adding "CPUQuota=25%" (for example) but, after it, if I run a "stress" with other user (not "root"), stress process takes 100% CPU. I have noticed that rebooting system non-root user has % CPU limited... but also root... so is it possible to configure that limits to all users but non root? Thanks.

I am attempting to create a multiple domain email server using postfix and cyrus-imap on CentOS Stream 8. It will includes a web back end similar to cyradm. Now I am stuck on mysql or mariadb support for pam. I am not able to find a pam_mysql rpm that will install on CentOS 8. I have a previous version working on CentOS 7. On CentOS 7 I am using pam_mysql 1:0.7-0.20.rc1.fc23 and all is working and has been for a number of years. I found pam_mysql-0.8.1-0.6.fc32.x86_64.rpm, but when I attempt to install it, it says it needs libcrypt.so.1 and it appears CentOS Stream has libcrypt.so.2 Any pointers either where to find pam_mysql, or some other solutions, for CentOS Stream 8? Note that I have epel-release installed and enabled, though epel-playground is disabled, and I am using Remi's repos to install php 7.4.

When starting Gnome, it shows the graphic screen briefly but reverts to the text login. Weird localectl behavior under CentOS 7

Hi, On a fresh CentOS 7 installation using Français/France as regional parameters in the installer, here's what localectl looks like: [microlinux@linuxbox ~]$ localectl System Locale: LANG=fr_FR.UTF-8 VC Keymap: ch-fr X11 Layout: ch X11 Variant: fr Now I'd like to have my system messages in english. So I set the system language accordingly: $ sudo localectl set-locale LANG=en_US.utf8 Things seem to look OK now: [microlinux@linuxbox ~]$ localectl System Locale: LANG=en_US.utf8 VC Keymap: ch-fr X11 Layout: ch X11 Variant: fr Except when I display my LANG variable, it's still fr_FR.UTF-8 for normal users... but en_US.utf8 for root. This looks like inconsistent or buggy behavior to me. Any suggestions on how to change the default system locale LANG so that it's en_US.utf8 for everybody *without* having to jump through burning loops and putting it in everybody's ~/.bashrc ? systemd and 'Stale file handle' errors?

I have a CentOS 7 system where I needed to restart chronyd - but the systemctl restart failed with the error: systemd[1]: Starting NTP client/server... systemd[43578]: Failed at step NAMESPACE spawning /usr/sbin/chronyd: Stale file handle systemd[1]: chronyd.service: control process exited, code=exited status=226 Turns out there are a couple of Stale NFS file handles from fuse mounts (related to gvfsd) of sub directories under an NFS mounted home directory server - but the home directory for the user in this case, no longer exist (user has left) However, I have no idea why these 'Stale file handles' prevent a service being started by systemd ? In this case, chronyd has nothing to do with NFS mounted user home directories - so shouldn't really care ? I have tried everything I can think of to clear these stale mounts, but with no luck Does anyone know why systemd complains about unconnected 'Stale file handles' - and is there any way I can tell systemctl to start a service regardless of these 'errors' ? Rebooting the host will be a last resort (the system is used by many users) - but in the meantime, I've manually started the /usr/sbin/chronyd binary directly, which runs fine Thanks James Pearson

cups, stalling the transfer of printed files from the local machines to the cups print server

Everyone, I have been having some problems with our cups printing service for the last 4 months. I have a gateway machine that holds the printer information and is the print server. The other machines on the network use cups and cups-browsed that are set up to spool the print jobs to the gateway and then the gateway sends the data stream to the respective printers. The problem I have is that on any of the local machines the print jobs stall. I can run lpstat lpt6 for instance which gives me the listing of the stalled print jobs, but I am not seeing error messages in the logs either on the local machine or on the gateway print server. In doing some google searching I found that there was a problem with gh ghostscript-9.07-31.el7_6.10.x86_64 and ghostscript-cups-9.07- 31.el7_6.10.x86_64 that was apparently fixed. I am running Centos 7.9 that is fully updated with gs 9.25 on both the local machines and the gateway. The problem is intermittent and appears with various file types pdf, ps, pcl, and txt. I have not been able to identify any specific or consistent association. If any of you have had this problem I would sure appreciate your help. Thanks in advance !!!! -- Greg Ennis

Hello, I have an accesspoint, that I connected to one ethernetport, the ap has ip 192.168.67.6, the port 192.168.67.1 I want to forward/route traffic for anything in 192.168.66.0 to go to that access point, and from the ap to the other port. What is the best way to do that? I tried: sudo sysctl -w net.ipv4.ip_forward=1 sudo firewall-cmd --direct --add-rule ipv4 filter FORWARD 0 -o eno1 -i enp0s20u4u1 -j ACCEPT sudo firewall-cmd --direct --add-rule ipv4 filter FORWARD 0 -o enp0s20u4u1 -i eno1 -j ACCEPT but that doesn't seem to work. thanks, Ron

Hi: RHEL 8.3 doesn't offer extended update support, so it seems be EOL this month. but centos8 will be supported until December. so will there be centos 8.4, or centos 8.3 will do the extend update support itself?

NetworkManager: Remove one of two DHCP leases

I forgot to release the DHCP IPv4 lease on a PC before I deployed it at the customer site. So now the box has two leases for a couple days, when the old lease expires. What's the proper way to force the unwanted additional lease to expire immediately? It's mucking up my resolv.conf with the old DNS search order and servers added to the customer's. I checked the /var/lib/NetworkManager/dhclient6-*.lease file and see my own IPv6 configuration and nothing from the customer, which explains why I can't connect to resolved IPv6 addresses. How can I flush that? (There are two identical lease6 records but both are to my home LAN. Why are there two copies?)

I do not want to spend so much money on buying physical IP phones. Recently, I migrated my Fortigate 60D firewall, Huawei E3276s-920 4G LTE USB modem, FreePBX virtual appliance (on laptop) and 1 unit of Cisco 7960 IP phone from my home to the community hostel. I cannot migrate too many hardware to the community hostel even though I have 4 Cisco 7960 IP phones. As stated earlier, I do not want to spend so much money on buying physical IP phones. I am trying to save as much money as possible as I live in extreme poverty in Singapore. My proposed solution is to install many Linux virtual machines on my laptop. ipforwarding between interfaces and firewall rules

Hello, I have a machine I am running Centos/RHEL 8 on. there are two interfaces and I want to forward all traffic between those interfaces (for the src and dst in the subnet a wireless device is on). One interface is connected to a switch, WAN side. The other ethernet port has an access point, connected wired. I did turn on ipforwarding, and thought I needed only two firewall rules. sysctl -w net.ipv4.ip_forward=1 firewall-cmd --direct --add-rule ipv4 filter FORWARD 0 -o eno1 -i enp0s20u4u1 -j ACCEPT firewall-cmd --direct --add-rule ipv4 filter FORWARD 0 -o enp0s20u4u1 -i eno1 -j ACCEPT However, when I try to do a DNS lookup, it looks like it is being blocked/stopped by the firewall, because when I stop the firewall, it just seems to work. With the firewall up and running, however I can ping an ip address. for example; if I do "ping www.google.com" I get a "ping www.google.com: Name or service not known" If I use an IP address (from www.google.com) it just works. what am I missing (probably a rule in the firewall?) thanks, Ron

World clocks on CentOS 8?

Hello, I am using CentOS 8 Streams + GNOME, and I cannot find the world clocks anymore (in order to add various cities and their current time). It used to be under the calendar, when one clicks on the time on the top bar. I cannot launch 'gnome-clocks' from the command line, and package search (with EPEL enabled) doesn't provide any results : $ sudo dnf list gnome-clocks Error: No matching Packages to list $ sudo dnf list *clock* Error: No matching Packages to list Was this software removed? Problem with RequiresMountsFor defined in a systemd service

Hi all, I have setup a systemd service that needs to mount a NFS share before starts. To accomplish this I have defined: RequiresMountsFor=/data/sysos As a dependency in [Unit] section but it doesn’t work. NFS share is defined in fstab with “defaults,noauto” options also .. password algorithm with authconfig vs authselect

In the old days I could do # authconfig --passalgo=sha256 --update With EL8 comes authselect now (replacement of authconfig). authselect --passalgo=sha512 --update does not work and seems to be unsupported. # grep -R passalgo /usr/lib/python3.6/site-packages/authselect/ /usr/lib/python3.6/site-packages/authselect/authcompat_Options.py: Option.UnsupportedValued ("passalgo", _("<descrypt|bigcrypt|md5|sha256|sha512>")), How does the new "way" looks like (>=EL8), to switch the password algorithm? C7 live CD does not like F33 ext partition

I've been trying to backup the root partition of my F33 installation. To that end, I'm running a C7 live CD. Yeah, I know, this is something we should have done a long time ago. But, you know what they say about the best time to plant a tree. (The best time to plant a tree is 20 years ago. The second best time is today.) As we continue to work to make all aspects of the CentOS Project more open and transparent, it is important that we create an open, welcoming community where all people, from all backgrounds, feel safe in their participation. This allows for a broader contributor pool, with more ideas and more community ownership of the resulting outcomes. And it's just the right thing to do. It is our intent to take the text of the Fedora CoC, and replace 'Fedora' with 'CentOS' everywhere, and propose it here. There will, of course, be other small changes to the text (Board vs Council, and so on) but not to the details of the Code itself, and how we intend to address reports. We're holding off on those edits so that our version doesn't drift from theirs, during their 2 week comment period. (Ends April 26th.) The document is derived from the Contributor Covenant, along with work that has been ongoing in the Fedora project for some time. Note also that the Contributor Covenant is also the source material for the CoC used by the Linux kernel project.[2] To that end, we encourage you to engage in the discussion around the Fedora CoC, because any changes made there will influence what we end up with here. qemu-system-x86_64 in EL8

I am planning to migrate a EL7 host to CS8 and noticed that an "application" runs via /usr/bin/qemu-system-x86_64 . Its seems its from EPEL. Stock C8 does not ship it. Any SIG repository with "qemu-system-x86_64"? Thanks, Leon

Hi everyone. I decided to go container with Centos Stream, but I keep having errors about "unknow capability: CAP_PERFMON". I tried minikube, as well as standard podman and toolbox container creation: $ toolbox create --distro fedora --release 34 --container test3 $ toolbox create --distro rhel --release 8.3 --container test4 Containers are created, I can list them with toolbox and podman. $ toolbox enter --container test4 Error: failed to start container test4 $ podman start test4 Error: OCI runtime error: unable to start container "[longhash]": container =_linux_go:370: starting container process caused: unknow capability "CAP_PERFMON" thanks -- Łukasz Posadowski
