CentOS6: missing kernel module?

Testing out tipc for cluster development, and running into an immediate snag. tipcutils was found in EPEL but despite having a "compatible" kernel, it doesn't seem to actually work. It's a completely updated system, Intel i5 with 16 GB of RAM, nothing remarkable. Any ideas? Hello List, After demystifying the cause for my /sbin/ifup-local not being executed by network scripts for an Ethernet interface (don't let NetworkManager control it or ifup-local won't be executed)... ... I have a question with hopefully a simple answer: I placed an alias/description on my interface during testing and now I want to remove it. I'm looking at ways to potentially reduce tracking via browser fingerprints. https://panopticlick.eff.org/ When I go to that url in CentOS FireFox - my browser is very distinct. For me I believe this is largely caused by gstreamer. I run a modern gstreamer, not the CentOS packages gstreamer. My modern gstreamer also includes a lot of the patent-encumbered codecs, and on that eff project page, I can see them being reported by the GStreamer plugin as supported, making my firefox very unique and subject to tracking via browser fingerprint. I'm not sure there is anything I can do about that, other than going back to stock gstreamer which I can't do because I need gstreamer support for some codecs not supported by stock CentOS gstreamer. I think for anything that is a plugin, I think the browser should ask the user. That would make browser fingerprinting more difficult. One of the plugins though that is detected is from rhythmbox. I didn't even know there was a rhytmbox plugin for firefox. /usr/lib64/mozilla/plugins/librhythmbox-itms-detection-plugin.so It is part of the core rhythmbox package. I certainly have no need for it, and I doubt very many people do. It seems to me that maybe that plugin should be part of a sub-package to rhythmbox rather than rhythmbox itself, strictly from a security perspective so that if there is an exploitable bug in it, it will only be a vector for those who actually want that plugin. Does anyone actually use that plugin for anything? Maybe it should just be removed from the Fedora / RHEL / CentOS world.

Hello all, In your view, what is the most reliable and safe way to increase an LV housing the root filesystem of a Centos 6 VM. I am thinking either growing the virtual HD virtual device, or creating a new device and adding it as a PV to the VM, or perhaps migrating the whole FS to a new virtual disk. NetworkManager and network service

Hi, folks, I 've created interfaces files with the NM_CONTROLLED=no statement and I've found that even after restarting network services changes are not commited. Only it worked after running ```` nmcli connection reload ```` restart of the network service worked. I wonder if it's either a feature or a bug... Could you help me? c++ Development question

Hello Centos user. Im learning about c/c++ , so far every thing works great. The problem begins when I try to install a new library or a third party api. For example now I need to install the jsoncpp implementation in my centos box but I have no idea how to do it. I realized that my knolowge about those things is very poor. I would like to ask you for some documentation about libraries directories layout regarding c/c++ programing. Im not interested in the languaje it self but how to prepare my server to succesfully compile c/c++ programas. I hope someone can help my on this. Regards, Leo.

Centos 7, ATI card, 30" monitor

Well, I got my user back to being able to use his system, but I've still got one issue: it's running on the VESA driver - there is *no* Catalyst build for this monitor, for CentOS 7. From a lot of googling, nothing's been done since the summer of '14 (lspci reports it as a FirePro V3900). Any thoughts, or pointers, as to if/how I can get X - he's running KDE - to see the full width of the monitor, not just about 4" less, or is that not possible with the VESA driver? mark

synthesizing yum transactions

Ok, I'm trying way too hard to shovel myself out of a hole. We have a bunch of remote CentOS 6 servers, that were configured with kickstart. They've subsequently had additional RPMs installed/updated via the 'rpm' utility. We have reason to occasionally rewind the state of the server back to it's original set of RPMs. Of late, we've found that 'yum' handles this scenario quite nicely, IFF (if and only if) that all RPM changes were handled via the 'yum' utility itself, such that yum can manage a list of transactions. In this case 'yum history rollback 1' does exactly what we need. My problem is that we did not exclusively use 'yum' to do this work, and even though there are newer RPMs in place, yum only knows about transaction ID 1, from the initial kickstart installation. Hence, it thinks there's nothing to rollback from. So, given the knowledge of what RPMs are currently installed, is there a way to invent a new transaction incorporating them, without reinstalling the RPMs in question? I feel I've come close, with this methodology, basically coercing yum to rebuild a database in a private directory: # installroot for yum workdir=/home/yum-hack rm -rf ${workdir} mkdir -p ${workdir} cd ${workdir} # list of newer RPMs (after transaction ID 1) new=new_rpms # dup repos and rpm/yum databases for tree in /var/lib/rpm/ /var/cache/yum/ /var/lib/yum/ /etc/yum.repos.d/; do echo ${tree} mkdir -p ./${tree} cp -pr ${tree}/* ./${tree} done cat new_rpm | xargs /usr/bin/yum -y --nogpgcheck --installroot=${workdir} \ --setopt=tsflags=noscripts reinstall On the surface, this seems to work, in that I now can see a transaction list: yum --installroot=/home/yum-hack history list all But, any effort to rollback to tid 1 yields: Transaction history is incomplete, before 5. You can use 'history rollback force', to try anyway. Error: Failed history rollback, incomplete So, I've clearly tricked myself. Does anyone have any suggestions about how I _should_ retroactively invent an additional yum transaction? This there some state I failed to introduce into the the above private directory? I've only begun to dive into the yum source to try to track down what triggers this error, but if anyone has some immediate knowledge, or suggestion for a better forum where I can ask this question? CentOS 7, new video card in server

Hi, folks, I've got a new Dell R730 server. My users have two Tesla K-80's in it. Then, they wanted to add video, for complicated reasons. Anyway, there's the onboard VGA; I just put in a Quadro K600 (they require DP, and this card offers that). Plug in a VGA monirot (the card even comes with two adaptors, one from large DP to DVI-D, and one DVI-D to VGA. (And according to the quick start guide, there's no additional power cable.) Boot the system, and no video on from the card. In the BIOS, the only thing I see that appears to relate is enable/disable onboard video. I'm looking at that as a last option, since I have no idea how I'd *undo* it, if I then have zero video.... Dell, of course, doesn't support ordinary video cards in a server.... So, anyone have clues, or pointers, to getting video coming out of the new card? Now, I have no issues with putting the proprietary NVidia driver on, but I'm trying to figure out if I'm missing something. Note that, as a server, of course, it is coming up in runlevel 3. mark

HTML5 to SQL under CentOS

Several years ago I wrote a simple, short, HTML/PHP program on my CentOS server for adding items to a MySQL/MariaDB database on the server from my Fedora laptop. Recently I thought I would try to be up-to-date and re-write the program using HTML5 Forms, which seemed the proper thing to do, but I'm finding this surprisingly difficult. Does anyone have, or can point me to, a simple HTML5 program (preferably not using Java or PHP) for this task ? I've already found that Firefox, the browser I normally use on my laptop, surprisingly (to me) does not support the HTML Forms date item, or at least does not have a date picker to go with it. So it seems I would have to use Chrome on my laptop, which is annoying but not fatal. Also it seems that CentOS does not support WebSQL. Is there an alternative that serves the same purpose. Changing the centos name on boot

I have been playing around with customizing the centos to create a spin for my workplace. I am using centos 6.6 minimal, and trying to change the centos name to some random string. I have been able to change the name in the grub using grub.conf, but the name while the system is booting, I am not able to find a reference to that. Can somebody help me with that ? Server used in DOS attack on UDP port 0

Hi, One of our AWS machines was used in an DOS attack last night and I am looking for possible attack vectors. AWS tells me it was sending UDP port 0 traffic to a cloudflare address. This instance had an incorrectly configured AWS security group exposing all ports. The server in question is a Centos 7 based FreeIPA server, OpenVPN concentrator and DNS server. With a brief inspection before the instance was stopped no evidence of intrusion could be detected in the obvious places and the machine is protected by standard SELinux policies. *sigh* The answer is that the large exported filesystem is a very large XFS... and at least through CentOS 6, upstream has *never* fixed an NFS bug that I find, googling, being complained about in '09: it gags on inodes > 32bit (not sure if that's signed, or unsigned, but....). The answer was to either create, or find an unneeded directory with a < 32bit inode, rename the high-number inode, move the new directory to that name and location, move everything that was under the old high-inode dir to under the new, low-number inode dir with the correct name, and reexport; I restarted nfs for good measure, and all is right with the world (well, after I restarted autofs and nfslock on the clients). mark

prefork vs worker mpm in apache

Hey guys, We had to recompile apache 2.4.12 because we needed to disable thread safety in php (ZTS). Because for some reason when compiling php with the --disable-maintainer-zts with the worker mpm model and checking the php info page, it was saying that thread safety was still enabled. So when we recompiled apache to use the prefetch worker model instead of worker, the php info page was showing that thread safety was disabled. But after that change apache processes spiked from around 11 processes per machine to well over 250 processes at any given time. These are the tuning settings we have in apache: StartServers 10 #MinSpareServers 10 #MaxSpareServers 25 ServerLimit 250 MaxRequestWorkers 250 MaxConnectionsPerChild 1000 KeepAlive On KeepAliveTimeout 30 EnableSendfile Off So I was just wondering how this change could've cause this problem of having the number of apache processes spike. And if there are any other changes we can make to apache to bring the process count down? Also I realize that installing apache / php from source isn't standard practice on red hat variants. But at the time that these servers were setup the latest apache at that time (2.4.12) wasn't available as an RPM. So we just decided to install from source. I've run out of ideas on this.... A CentOS 6 box serving nfs: two directories separately: /this/partition/dir0 and /this/partition/dir1. Everything looks good on it. On the servers it's exporting to - two are CentOS 6, one's CentOS 7, they all automount /net/server/this/partition/dir0... but no matter what I've done, restarting autofs and nfslock, umounted things... but with autofs off, even when I manually mount it to /mnt, I get stale file handle. The two dirs are owned by root, but one's got a different group. Selinux settings are the same. Clues for the poor? mark

I have two servers identified as `server-1 - 192.168.3.128` and `server-2 - 192.168.3.130`. I am setting up `capifony` for automatic deployment from server-1 to server-2 and this is what I have done so far: 1. In both servers I have created a user `deploy` without password since that's the user I will use for deployment. 2. In server-1 I setup a SSH keys by running the command: `ssh-keygen` and I leave without pass-phrase and default directories. 3. problem with openjdk version

I am using cent OS 6.7 andI have installed omnet++ 4.6 on it.When I am trying to create a new omnet++ project then suddenly omnet++ window is terminating and an error message is showing as "A problem in the Java-1.7.0-openjdk-1..7.0.85-2.6.1.3el6_7package has been detected".Then I uninstalled this version of java and tried with version "1.7.0_91" and "1.7.0_79" but can't solve this problem.please help me in solving this problem.

Hi all, I need to restart a service on a few elasticsearch nodes. I'm trying to do it with pssh. C7: screensaver locks screen

Strange thing just began happening this past weekend with my Centos-7 netbook (using the MATE desktop, which may mean it's an EPEL problem...). the lock screen checkbox in the screensaver's UI is NOT checked. I've even used the dconf editor to uncheck ALL the boxes in the screensaver section that relate to locking the screen. nada. no such luck. even after rebooting, it still locks the screen. Disaster recovery recommendations

Greetings, I have three drives; they are all SATA Seagate Barracudas; two are 500GB; the third is a 2TB. I don't have a clear reason why they have failed (possibly due to a deep, off-brand, flakey mobo; but it's still inconclusive, but I would like to find a disaster recovery service that can hopefully recover the data. BCP 47 support in CentOS 7 PHP

This is something I would like to share, and if possible, get feedback. I am working on a calendar webapp - something to replace Google Calendar for webmasters that do not like the idea of their users being tracked. Part of that project involves time zone selection, and time zone selection I want internationalized, and I found the existing functions in PHP to be extremely poor. As in the php function for getting the preferred language from the browser was often flat out incorrect. That led me to creating my own class for BCP 47 support : https://calendar.librelamp.com/BCP47 Not perfect yet (er, probably never will be perfect) but at least the bugs I find are my bugs so I can figure out how to fix them. Just found one - with perfectly valid language tag es-419 when the class attempts to create a glibc language tag, it uses es_ES.utf8 which is obviously wrong. I didn't take into account UN region codes when it tries to find a glibc match. But anyway, I know it is asking a lot, but I want to get this right and would love feedback from anyone who deals with internationalizing php web applications. Thanks, Alice

Centos 6: language mess with ssh

When I connect through SSH to my Centos 6 box, language are mixed: connection is in english but password change dialog is in french. Greetings. Please help me. I have installed Centos 7 , but when I do, yum update give me error next. Complementos cargados:fastestmirror, langpacks One of the configured repositories failed (Desconocido), and yum doesn't have enough cached data to continue. At this point the only safe thing yum can do is fail. There are a few ways to work "fix" this: 1. Contact the upstream for the repository and get them to fix the problem. 2. Reconfigure the baseurl/etc. for the repository, to point to a working upstream. This is most often useful if you are using a newer distribution release than is supported by the repository (and the packages for the previous distribution release still work). 3. Disable the repository, so yum won't use it by default. Yum will then just ignore the repository until you permanently enable it again or use --enablerepo for temporary usage: yum-config-manager --disable <repoid> 4. Configure the failing repository to be skipped, if it is unavailable. Note that yum will try to contact the repo. when it runs most commands, so will have to try and fail each time (and thus. yum will be be much slower). If it is a very temporary problem though, this is often a nice compromise: yum-config-manager --save --setopt=<repoid>.skip_if_unavailable=true Cannot find a valid baseurl for repo: base/7/x86_64 Gracias de antemano. Detecting empty office doc containing virus macro

We are receiving LOTS of emails that contain empty XLS or DOC documents with embedded virus macros. These are getting past SPAMASSASSIN, Clamav and Kaspersky. I'm trying to write a filter for EXIM to block these emails but I need to know a good, quick, command-line to detect an empty doc with a macro. Is there anything available that I can use?? I have managed to write a PERL script to detect empty xls xlsx, doc and docx files but I cannot detect whether they have any macros embedded Gary

RPM `requires` installation order

Hello All, I'm a bit of newbie with rpm/yum, seeking the help from rpm/yum experts. Suppose I have an RPM package A which depends on package B. RPM A's spec has 'Requires:B' tag with 'autoprov' and 'autoreq' enabled. When I install RPM A on a 'centos 6.5' machine with 'RPM version 4.8.0', using the command `yum install A` : * `rpm` installs A first, then it installs B. * The installation of B could partially fail. That is, A would installed even if the installation of the dependency, B has failed. Is this the expected behaviour? (Shouldn't B be installed before A?) Can the same behaviour be expected across versions (such as el5)? I was hoping that the dependencies would be installed before the main package is installed. Which would prevent the installation of the main package, If one of the dependencies failed to install. I have tried `PreReq` tag as well, which has same behaviour as far as I can tell. Is there any other means to accomplish my requirement? Thanks, Shyam

hello, I have now update a System from Centos 7 to 7(1) with all updates now the firewall-config don't work anymore :-(. Why is firewall-config working on a (old) Centos 7 but not on a CentOs 7(1)? This is a fairly new install of CentOS7 and I'm trying to install phpMyAdmin (http). When I access http://server/phpMyAdmin it throws: The mbstring extension is missing. Please check your PHP configuration. we have remote server running as a guest instance on a kvm host. This server acts as a public MX service for our domains along with providing a backup for our Mailman mailing lists. It also has a slave named service. while tracking down a separate problem I discovered these avc anomalies and ran audit2allow to see what was required to eliminate them. ssh freezes

All too often, my ssh session will freeze. I'm fairly certain the problem is at my end. None of the tilde commands work. In particular, ~# and ~. are nonfunctional. I can write to ssh's terminal window from another terminal window. If I kill the ssh process, I can ssh in again. The next time it happens, I will try another ssh session without killing the first one. dmesg did not show me anything interesting. USB drive is "read-only file system" and cannot umount - how to fix

I 'just' noticed that at some point, my USB backup drive on my server is mounted as read-only and all of my background sync cron jobs have been failing. So I need to fix this without rebooting the server. I can VNC into the server and running "mount" shows: /dev/sdc1 on /media/HD103SI type ext4 (rw,nosuid,nodev,uhelper=udisks) and umount gets: # umount /dev/sdc1 umount: /media/HD103SI: device is busy. (In some cases useful info about processes that use the device is found by lsof(8) or fuser(1)) How can I get this drive r/w?

CentOS-6 reboots

I am now in receipt of an update to qemu-img and qemu-kvm. My practice up to now has been to restart the virtual host after applying qemu updates. This in turn implies that all of the virtual guests on that host also will need restarting since suspending them takes much, much longer than a restart. The issue of whether or not the requirement to reboot servers based on CentOS was increasing or not was recently raised. My question then: Is a restart of the host following applying these updates actually necessary? Running CentOS 6.7, on an older HP DL580 G5. We've got a Dell 12-bay RAID box plugged into a PERC H800 (aka LSI Liberator) that we put in the HP, and that works fine. We've got a new RAID (a JetStor), and are trying to plug it in. The layout is that the Dell RAID is dual-pathed DAS. Each PERC has two DAS ports. We've got the Dell RAID in the top port of each PERC. I *thought* I could just plug the new RAID, which also has two ports, into the bottom two ports on the PERC. TRied rescanning the SCSI bus, /sys/class/scsi_host/host[0-5]/scan, with no apparent sight of the new RAID. Can I do this the way I've got it, or do I need to daisy-chain the new RAID through the old RAID? mark
