Bug in init scripts for ipset?

I've just started experimenting with ipset under CentOS 6, and have found what appears to be a bug (or poor design) in the init scripts for ipset, /etc/rc.d/init.d/ipset In stop(), save() and status(), it does lsmod to check for the existence of the ip_set module. If the module is not found, it exits without performing any action. This doesn't take account of a kernel where the ip_set code is compiled in instead of being a loadable module. An example would be my CentOS 6 virtual machine at Linode. It has a Linode-compiled kernel 4.1.0 with no separately-loaded modules. It certainly supports ipset, as I have successfully tried some test rules. However, I wondered why giving the command "service ipset save" didn't result in /etc/sysconfig/ipset being written, and discovered the cause I described above. Surely there should be a better way of determining whether the kernel includes ipset support than just looking for a module? Logrotate problems

Hi Y'all, We have nginx set up and we are having problems with logrotate. The permissions and users do not seem to be any different from other machines that are working ok however the /var/log/nginx does have a directory in there that we are using to collect some special log stuff. amanda-client does not recognise 'dump'

I'm busy migrating some older hosts to CentOS 7 but have found that the available amanda packages (see above) have not been compiled on a host that has the 'dump' program installed. Is this just an oversight or are we trying to not use 'dump' anymore? If the former, who is responsible for re-compiling this on a host that has 'dump' installed. Help with systemd

Hi I am trying to get Greenstone3 http://www.greenstone.org/download to work with systemd. So far I have come up with the following which works but feels more like a hack than a solution. ISC DHCP failover

Anybody have any experience with setting up dhcpd in failover mode between two servers? I set this up on a couple of servers, and it seems to be working, but I don't think it is working "right". It appears both servers are replying to all requests (which for renewals works okay because they both give the same address, but new requests get two different responses). I thought that only one server would reply to a particular request. Also, every DHCPACK is followed by a message like this in the log: Sep 23 15:45:50 rad2 dhcpd: bind update on x.x.x.x from mypeer rejected: incoming update is less critical than outgoing update Any ideas? I subscribed and asked over on the ISC-operated dhcp-users list but haven't had any responses. Google finds others asking about the same log message, and the only responses seem to be "well, if you get it for every update, there's probably some configuration issue" (but nobody ever says what issue might lead to it). -- Chris Adams <linux(a)cmadams.net>

Moving the port by itself is like rearranging the deck chairs on a sinking ship. It does not address the fundamental issue. Update from 6.6 to 6.7 > automount logs error message

Hello, after an update from 6.6 to 6.7 the following error message is logged to /var/log/messages when I login (per ssh): Aug 11 16:31:21 a1234 automount[1598]: set_tsd_user_vars: failed to get passwd info from getpwuid_r Checked all log-files of my systems running 6.6 with same configuration -- never got such a message (We use NFS/autofs for home-directories, NIS and tcsh (login shell)). Everything seems to work -- but before I update all machines to 6.7 I want to know whats going on. Any comments? Best regards, Ralf

OT: closing a port on home router

Hi all! I'm wanting to close port 22 (ssh) on my home router, and I don't see any facilities in its GUI for doing that. I don't mind learning how to write an iptables rule for that, but I'd rather not have to fool around with commandline stuff on the router, especially things that require extra steps to make it peresist across boots. So, I'm trying this (please tell me if it makes sense to do it this way): I've set up a port forwarding rule on the router that forwards incoming port 22 to port 9 on the LAN side of the router. As I understand it, port 9 is a /dev/null equivalent, and it seems to block the port well enough, but are there caveats I should be aware of? thanks! No, fail2ban did not catch this because the number of attempts was below the threshold for a single IP. The logwatch message reported is incomplete. Our address was the destination address. The source address was not reported by logwatch but it was logged in the syslog and it was not an internal address. It did belong to an organisation that bills itself as "a leader in enterprise security. . .". We have contacted them requesting an explanation of the probe. It could have been an error on someone's part. I suppose. We see a lot of cracker traffic from Chile, Romania, Russia and the Ukraine. China was such a PITA that eventually we simply cut off that range of addresses from reaching us by any ports other than 25/80/443 so we do not even see it any more, except via proxy. Centos 6.6, apparent xfs corruption

Hi all - After several months of worry-free operation, we received the following kernel messages about an xfs filesystem running under CentOS 6.6. The proximate causes appear to be "Internal error xfs_trans_cancel" and "Corruption of in-memory data detected. Shutting down filesystem". The filesystem is back up, mounted, appears to be working OK underlying a Splunk datastore. Does anyone have a suggestion on diagnosis or known problems? This morning's log review revealed this sshd log entry on one of our web services hosts: Received disconnect: 11: disconnected by user : 2 Time(s) 3: com.jcraft.jsch.JSchException: reject HostKey: 216.185.71.170 : 1 Time(s) The IP address used is that of a public facing database query page for our freight transit information. It is itself a virtual IP address hosted on the system reporting the error. In other words, if this were a legitimate connection then the situation would be that of an ssh client connecting to an sshd server running on the same host albeit each using a different IP address. In other words, the hostkeys would be identical. It seems to me that someone attempted an ssh connection while spoofing our internal address. Is such a thing even possible? trying to use the android sdk on centos 7 and cant seem to find the 32bit libs.. [jason@centos7 platform-tools]$ ./adb devices -bash: ./adb: /lib/ld-linux.so.2: bad ELF interpreter: No such file or directory [jason@centos7 platform-tools]$ whats the right way to isntall the needed 32bit libs? I cant seem to find them with yum provides.. Ive tried multilib_policy=best in my yum.conf as well. Jason

Setting up BackupPC on CentOS-7

I'd be interested in any corrections or comments on the following instructions (basically for myself): We assume that BackupPC has been installed: sudo yum install BackupPC 1. BackupPC must be run by the user backuppc. Accordingly the lines User apache Group apache in /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf should be changed to User backuppc Group backuppc 2. The user backuppc must be able to ssh to root (to run rsync), since only root can access all the files on the system. This is slightly complicated because backuppc has no default shell. $ su Passwd: # su -s /bin/sh backuppc sh-4.1$ cd sh-4.1$ ssh-keygen Generating public/private rsa key pair. sh-4.1$ cd .ssh sh-4.1$ cp id_rsa.pub /tmp sh-4.1$ exit # cd # ls .ssh If .ssh exists and contains id_rsa and id_rsa.pub ignore the next command # ssh-keygen Generating public/private rsa key pair. # cd .ssh # cat /tmp/id_rsa.pub >> authorized_keys # su -s /bin/sh backuppc sh-4.1$ ssh -l root helen helen is the name of my server - substitute the correct name or IP address # exit sh-4.1$ exit # 3. We must setup the graphic interface to BackupPC, since it is more or less impossible to administer BackupPC otherwise. I want to configure BackupPC from my laptop. My laptop and server are on the same network 192.168.2.0 # vi /etc/httpd/conf.d/BackupPC.conf Firstly, after the line allow from 127.0.0.1 add allow from 192.168.2.0/255.255.255.0 (giving the IP address of your network in place of 192.168.2.0). Give backuppc and yourself passwords to access BackupPC # htpasswd -c /etc/BackupPC/apache.users backuppc Password: # htpasswd -c /etc/BackupPC/apache.users yourusername Password: # exit 5. Ensure that all BackupPC files are owned by backuppc.apache # chown -R backuppc.apache /etc/BackupPC /etc/httpd/conf.d/BackupPC.conf /var/lib/BackupPC 6. Restart BackupPC and apache # systemctl restart backuppc # systemctl restart httpd 7. Now see if you can access BackupPC on your server: Browse to http://localhost/backuppc If this succeeds give username backuppc and the password you chose for yourself above 8. Now try the same on your laptop: Browse to http://helen/backuppc (substituting your server's name or IP address for "helen"). Again give username backuppc and the password you chose for yourself above. 9. Returning to the server, # cd /etc/BackupPC # vi hosts I appended the line helen 0 backuppc to this file - you can choose any name here in place of helen it does not have to be the name of your server. 10. Now browse again to BackupPC, on laptop or server. Where it says "Select a host" give the name you just chose. Click on "Edit Config" and then on "Xfer" and in the RsyncShareName line add the directory or directories on your server that you want to backup, and then click on Save. (I chose /Photos, /common/tim and /var/www, but of course this is entirely up to you.) After some experimenting I have observed that overriding settings from /usr/share/logwatch/default.conf/logwatch.conf in /etc/logwatch/conf/logwatch.conf does not produce consistent results. For example, if I replace the default detail configuration in etc/logwatch/conf/logwatch.conf with: Detail = High It does indeed change the level of detail from the default Low set in /usr/share/logwatch/default.conf/logwatch.conf. However, if I comment out the line: #Service = "-zz-sys" # Prevents execution of zz-sys service in the overridden file then the fact that this line remains in the default.conf version means that the sservice cannot be enabled to run by default without editing /usr/share/logwatch/default.conf/logwatch.conf. Of course doing that means that any update clobbers the local changes. I am not sure if this a bug or a design feature but it seems to me that on should be able to override all of the default settings for services. The only way around this seems to be to specify '--service All' on the command line. But then the service entries in logwatch.conf seem to be ignored entirely so that one must also specify the service exclusions on the command line. I also ran across a rather bizarre 'feature' with the 'DisplayOrder' setting. Evidently, if one gives the same DisplayOrder value to two or more services (say zz-sys which has DisplayOrder = 0.4 and zz-runtime which uses the default value of 0.5 otherwise) then only the last service (ordered alphabetically) is reported. No errors are logged or conflict notices are given either. The other service reports just 'disappear'. However, one can explicitly assign multiple services a DisplayOrder value of 0.5 and all are reported nonetheless, in alphabetic order, along with the other services which simply take the implicit default value. -- *** e-Mail is NOT a SECURE channel *** Do NOT transmit sensitive data via e-Mail James B. BackupPC is not easy to setup

I finally got BackupPC working under Centos-7.1 after several hours of pain. I had been running it for several years under CentOS-6, and probably CentOS-5, but there seem to me to have been several new issues that arise with CentOS-7. In my experience, the official documentation on this, <http://backuppc.sourceforge.net/faq/BackupPC.html>, is more or less useless unless you have a very long time to spend. It suffers from the usual Linux disease of having inordinately long explanations of everything with no examples of the actual commands a real person has to give. The explanation in <https://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/BackupPC> (which I only found later) is much better, though it starts with the warning "This page is no longer maintained, having been abandoned on 2009-09-17". I thought I'd write a 1-page note to myself of the steps I took, in preparation for CentOS-8... I have a couple of questions that this raises. 1. Why exactly does backuppc want to ssh to root? Is this just a way of running BackupPC as root? 2. The graphical interface seems to be treated as an extra, but what other way is there of accessing BackupPC? Is there a CLI approach? Nux VLC gives CLI only on CentOS-6.x

I thought this was just because of various unwise repo mixing that I'd done on my main home server-cum-workstation, but I've been able to duplicate it on a fresh VirtualBox installation. I install the nux repo vlc-core and vlc-extras. I then try to start it from a command line. I get +++++++ main interface error: no suitable interface module [0x1ae5108] main libvlc error: interface "globalhotkeys,none" initialization failed [0x1ae5108] main libvlc: Running vlc with the default interface. Use 'cvlc' to use vlc without interface. [0x1bac2b8] [cli] lua interface: Listening on host "*console". VLC media player 2.0.8 Twoflower Command Line Interface initialized. Type `help' for help. +++++++ I can open any media file with it, but I can't get the usual GUI interface. I tend to use mplayer and smplayer more often, but I've not been able to find the reason for this not working. Googling has brought me some Ubuntu issues that were resolved with reinstalling, but the only thing I've seen with CentOS-6.x and this is a few years old. Does anyone else have this issue? Thanks to Earl for the NUX repo recommendation. Good VLC and ffmpeg versions (for CentOS) here. Centos users, I new to Centos 7 and my problem is the following: I am using my Centos 7 system as a print server in a warehouse. Using cups for the print queue's. Which I can print to the printers find from the Centos 7 machine. The hosting system is Sco Unix using lpd printing. This machine is in Illinois and the warehouse / Centos 7 machine is in Arizona. I have loaded "cups-lpd" using yum and it seems fine. I have also setup "/etc/xinetd.d/cups-lpd" Following is a "netstat -tanp |grep -i listen" tcp 0 0 0.0.0.0:22 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN 1090/sshd tcp 0 0 0.0.0.0:631 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN 1096/cupsd tcp 0 0 127.0.0.1:25 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN 1671/master tcp6 0 0 :::515 :::* LISTEN 1095/xinetd tcp6 0 0 :::22 :::* LISTEN 1090/sshd tcp6 0 0 :::631 :::* LISTEN 1096/cupsd tcp6 0 0 ::1:25 :::* LISTEN 1671/master I notice that "port 515" is only listening on tcp6 not tcp. Question: could this be my problem? and how can I get "port 515" to be listened to on tcp? my Sco Unix print queue "status" file says "waiting for gate to come up". I have had the local hardware person verify that the router is "port forwarding" port 515 to my Centos 7 system. Help in this matter would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Shawn

Secure boot

After updates to grub2 and kernel in CentOS 7, today, systems will no longer boot in Secure Boot mode. I'm not positive, but I think grub2 is the culprit. Is anyone else seeing the same problem?

gpg decryption error from only 1 user

Hi all, I am having an issue. We have a vm that has encrypted data with gpg. The vm is centos 6.5 and it has multiple users. user1=bob user2=kevin user3= postgres user4=root. Only postgres has access to the file in which we keep the encrypted data. I as root will su - postgres, cd that data dir, and use this command "gpg -d (file_name)" and it works just fine. However the user1 "bob" will sudo su - postgres (have an entry in sudoers file to allow) and become postgres, cd to the dir with the data, run this same command "gpg -d (file_name) however it gives this error gpg: CAST5 encrypted data can't connect to `/home/postgres/.gnupg/S.gpg-agent': No such file or directory gpg-agent[6153]: command get_passphrase failed: Operation cancelled gpg: cancelled by user gpg: encrypted with 1 passphrase gpg: decryption failed: No secret key I really do not understand whats going on here. I have tried deleting the user bob, and re creating it in case of some sort of corruption but still the same issue. We also see an issue where I installed screen. as any user but bob I can create or join. But as bob I get this error "Cannot open your terminal '/dev/pts/2' - please check."Also I, as superuser did this su - bob sudo su - postgres cd data dir gpg -d (file_name) works with no issues, please help me debug this I am out of ideas. thanks in advance

Centos 7, systemd, and nvidia drivers

Or, another rant against systemd. Moderators, put up with it - this is an issue. I tried systemctl start multi-user.target. I tried systemctl stop graphical.target. I finally had to set the multi-user.target as the default, and reboot, to get rid of the nouveau drivers. Note that I tried to modprobe -r, and rmmod with all the modules using nouveau, and couldn't - I kept getting "in use" - it seemed like a circular reference. As I said, I rebooted. Then I ran the proprietary build, ran fine. I try starting the graphical target, no joy. I changed the default target back to graphical, and rebooted. Still no xorg. Googling (yahooing?), I added rdblacklist=nouveau in grub.conf, *then* had to rebuild the grub2 (grub2 must *die*). Still wouldn't see the nvidia drivers on reboot. Finally, I rebuild the initramfs, which got the now-built and installed nvidia drivers (and I'd yum uninstalled nouveau), and finally, it came up. Oh, and for some reason, without the reboot, the Xorg.0.log wasn't renewed, as though it hadn't actually restarted X. Plus, it appears that <ctrl-alt-bkspc> is disabled.... Then all I had to do was fight and hand-edit the xorg.conf, which *MUST* be in /etc/X11/sorg.conf.d to be even seen.... But what I had to do is beyond this - my user's got three monitors, on two cards, and two are for 3D, and so nothing to do with my issues with trying to get systemd to load and xorg to use the nvidia drivers. mark, incredibly frustrated

(?) Mailman VERY slow with IPv6 (with work-around)

I recently stood up an EL7 box with Mailman for a few lists I run for some friends. My old install, on an EL6 system, ran with no issues for several years but I was induced to upgrade by a "hardware casualty" on the old system. I was going to have to rebuild anyway, so why not take it as an opportunity to try EL7? The build went fine and I was able to migrate the lists over with no issues, but once I got there just about everything to do with Mailman operations were painfully slow. For example, "list_lists" took 5 seconds of "real" time. I was used to it taking _much_ less as I only have about 6 lists. This affected both the command-line Mailman tools and the web interface. My first inclination was to blame Python, but other code executed just fine with it. While testing I tried an strace of list_lists and found that it was timing out on a read operation to a socket to the Avahi daemon (/var/run/avahi-daemon/socket) while trying to resolve the link-local IPv6 address. Having flashbacks to Sendmail stalling on DNS issues I decided to try fixing resolution first. As a test I put the link-local address into my /etc/hosts file with a localized name. Running list_lists then took about 0.19 seconds "real" time! The web interface also changed from painfully slow to it's previous behaviour on EL6. I imagine just turning off IPv6 would work as well, but I have an actual use case that is a lot easier with it turned on. Periodic speed test

I run the speedtest from <https://pypi.python.org/pypi/speedtest-cli/> quite often, and find it very reliable. I'm wondering if anyone has developed a version to run the speed test at regular intervals, say every 6 hours, and record the results in a simple database or just a file? OOM and Swappiness

Hi All, I have a server that has its swappiness set to 0. It is running a little tight on memory and so there have been a couple of events where the OOM_killer has been invoked and killed off MySQL, which you would expect. Now if you have your swappiness at 0 then "A value of 0 instructs the kernel not to initiate swap until the amount of free and file-backed pages is less than the high water mark in a zone."[1] So even in this event should I expect to start swapping instead of invoking the oom_killer? Is the logic Memory request -> OOM - > Can I swap? Y-> swap N-> OOM-Killer Or as the OOM-Killer there to prevent an OOM Condition, that as the OOM Condition is prevented by killing mysql and therefore we will never swap? Restoring Windows to Minimzed State after Sleeping

When I resume working on my computer running Centos 6.7 after sleeping, terminal windows, file directories and the applications are restored. However, terminal windows and file directories that were minimized before going to sleep are opened to the size and location they had before being minimized. I'd like for all windows that were minimized to be restored to this very state - is this possible? Thank you.

I agree, I don't see it there for C6, even in their -testing. Looking at rpmfind it appears to be available from RpmFusion back to fedora-18. That may not be old enough (forget what the fc "base" is for C6), but you may be able to find older fc versions with a little looking.

The cyrus-imapd specific logwatch script that I have found and have placed into /etc/logwatch/scripts/services/imapd is old and has errors. I can probably fix the errors but my Perl skills are inadequate to do anything more. Does anyone know of a current Logwatch script for cyrus-imapd? Hi, Did anyone manage to install chromium on CentOS 7? I tried and got this error: Error: Package: chromium-31.0.1650.63-2.el6.x86_64 (chromium-el6) Requires: libudev.so.0()(64bit) Tried to do several things among them is creating a sym link from libudev.so.1 to libudev.so.0, didn't work :( Any suggestions? 10x.

Hello everyone, We have some chrooted sftp-only users on a CentOS release 6.6 server. The server had been logging their actions, but after recent updates the logs have stopped. This worked fine, and I can decrypt the LUKS partition via script and manually using --key-file with luksOpen. The odd problem is that I can't decrypt the partition using the prompt. If I manually create a file with the passphrase in it and then point to it with --key-file, it decrypts fine. I used 'cat -A /tmp/foo' to verify that there was no '\n' at the end of the phrase. Is this expected behaviour? That is; If you create an encrypted partition using --key-file, you always decrypt with the same? If so, I can't understand the logic... If not, then I am not sure what I am doing wrong. CentOS-6 - LogWatch

The Logwatch imapd service script distributed with CentOS-6 does not generate anything when I run logwatch --service all on a cyrus-imapd host. Is this expected behaviour? Is there a separate script for cyrus-imapd or are their configuration options required to get the existing script to work. I have found an ancient (2004) logwatch service script for cyrus-imapd but I was sort of hoping that there was a more up-to-date and officially supported version available somewhere. centos 7 on older macbook pro

Hi all, I recently got a brand new MacBook Pro, replacing one that is over 5.5 years old. I'm trying to think of something to do with the old laptop, and one idea I had was to put CentOS on it. After some initial struggles, I finally found this page, which tells how to tell the installer to find hfsplus-utils: https://bugs.centos.org/view.php?id=7327 Then I got to the point of configuring wifi, and of course being a MBP, it has a proprietary Broadcom interface. I followed the instructions on the wiki (https://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/Laptops/Wireless/Broadcom) but had some trouble with it coming back up after a sleep. That plus some other issues (it ran hot just running a browser, for example) are making me question whether this is a good idea. Does anyone else run a CentOS (not necessarily 7) on Apple hardware, particularly laptops (and not in a VM)? If so, any pointers on making life easier? Centos main list, I am working on a Centos 7 system and trying to do the following. yum search cups-lpd I am getting the following -------------------------------------------------------------------- Could not retrieve mirrorlist http://mirrorlist.centos.org/?release=7&arch=x86_64&repo=os&infra=stock error was 12: Timeout on http://mirrorlist.centos.org/?release=7&arch=x86_64&repo=os&infra=stock: (28, 'Resolving timed out after 30382 milliseconds') One of the configured repositories failed (Unknown), and yum doesn't have enough cached data to continue. At this point the only safe thing yum can do is fail. There are a few ways to work "fix" this: 1. Contact the upstream for the repository and get them to fix the problem. 2. Reconfigure the baseurl/etc. for the repository, to point to a working upstream. This is most often useful if you are using a newer distribution release than is supported by the repository (and the packages for the previous distribution release still work). 3. Disable the repository, so yum won't use it by default. Yum will then just ignore the repository until you permanently enable it again or use --enablerepo for temporary usage: yum-config-manager --disable <repoid> 4. Configure the failing repository to be skipped, if it is unavailable. Note that yum will try to contact the repo. when it runs most commands, so will have to try and fail each time (and thus. yum will be be much slower). If it is a very temporary problem though, this is often a nice compromise: yum-config-manager --save --setopt=<repoid>.skip_if_unavailable=true Cannot find a valid baseurl for repo: base/7/x86_64 -------------------------------------------------------------------- I am using cups on this Centos 7 machine. Which prints fine from the Centos to my print queue's However I have an Sco Unix system using lpd printing that I am trying to send print jobs to the Centos 7 system and those are not even getting to the system. I get message: waiting on queue to be enabled QUESTION FOR main list: Is the Centos 7 "yum" commands being worked on? When might this be fixed? Crash when open a terminal after upgrading from centos5.9 to 5.11

Dear all, I had installed Centos 5.9 in my x86_64 system and I installed update yesterday. Just now after I initiated the system, I found it has been upgraded to centos 5.11. But the bad thing is now I cannot open a terminal. When I try to open a terminal, it just gives out a bug buddy window : "The information about the crash has been successfully collected. Please provide some background about what you were doing when the application crashed..." Could anyone help me about this? Thanks in advance. Yeping Sun
