wicd problem 1: wicd allows network to be connected on reboot

greetings, i find this strange because i see problems when using 'wicd'. 1st problem is that wicd allows network to be connected on reboot, even when network is disconnected at time of reboot. such does not seem to be good because i leave system up 24/7/365 and if there is a mains failure and ups takes system down, system will come back up with network connected, which i prefer not to have happen. is there a way to set up 'wicd' so that it does not start connected? a 2nd problem i see with 'wicd' is in post "Subject: wicd problem"; 2: wicd does not sync when ifconfig commands are given from a terminal -- If Bill Gates got a dime for every time Windows crashes... ...oh, wait. We are giving RHEL-7 a pass on this iteration. We have installed it on a couple of test hosts and are not favourably impressed with much of the user interface. Timeout before trust answer with iPhone iOS 8

Until recently I've not had any problem connecting my iPhone 4s with iOS 8 to my CentOS 6.6 desktop to move pictures and videos. Problem occurs with my wife's new iPhone 5s. Now, before I can answer the "Trust This Computer" message on the iPhone, I get a DBus error: "org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply: Message did not receive a reply (timeout by message bus)" Searching this message reveals a lot of complaints by users on Ubuntu and a bug in a library. But this was back in 2012-2013. Couldn't find anything related to CentOS. Appears to be a timing issue...the timer expires before I can respond to the trust question on the iPhone. Any guidance on how to fix this? Is there a timeout setting somewhere down in udev, fuse, or gvfs? DaveM

Unbound nodes using numactl

Dear Centos Users We were wondering how can we change the default policy of numactl. In other words, our cluster has 10 servers, each server has two nodes, and each node has 16 cores. Recently, we observed a poor performance of our cluster when a couple of jobs run on the same server. By investigating the problem, we found that each job moves randomly among the 32 cores of the server. This returns to the fact that the 32 cores of each server bound together as seen below. Hello, Trying to access webmin but I get the error: ssl_error_weak_server_cert_key. I tried uninstalling Firefox and re-installing 38.x but still get the error. I tried installing Chrome but the dependencies are an endless loop. I found instructions on how to fix the error but I can't access webmin to do it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

how to determine what's installed from a repository?

Hello all-- I am trying to determine what I have isntalled from a given repository. I have seen several references to "yum repo-pkgs" which I think is what would work for me, but "repo-pkgs" does not seem to be a part of yum 3.2.29. Problems with Samba-based Home-Directory

Hi folks, I'm running CentOS 6.6 on my workstation. There I have a user meikel, and its home directory /home/meikel ist stored on a samba share on a server which also runs CentOS 6.6. In the very beginning I added the mount options for that home directory into the /etc/fstab file which led to some problems, so I set up autofs for mounting the home directory. The autofs seems to work for /home/meikel, but sometimes when I login at the GUI, I get error messages which look a little as if the home dir isn't available, I then also don't get my desktop background image. The two error dialogs which I get in that situation show the following messages: "Could not update ICEauthority file /home/meikel/.ICEauthority" and "Es gibt ein Problem mit dem Konfigurationsserver. (/usr/libexec/gconf-sanity-check-2 beendet mit Status 256)" Sorry for the german, it's not clear to me how to get it in english. It's something like "There's a problem with configuration server. (/usr/libexec/gconf-sanity-check-2 terminated with exit-code 256)" To do some analysis I did the following: - Restart workstation, wait until login screen appears - use CTRL-ALT-F2 to go to a text console - log in as root - mount --> it seems that /home/meikel isn't mounted (and this is what I expect) - ll /home/meikel/ --> it's fine, I can see alls the files and subdirectories - ll /home/meikel/Dokumente/ --> it's also fine - df -h /home/meikel --> now the mount is there - mount | grep meikel --> yes, the mount is there - use CTRL-ALT-F3 to go to another text console - log in as user meikel --> I get an error saying "No directory /home/meikel!", but I'm logged in - pwd --> it shows the root dir / - id --> it shows uid=500(meikel) gid=500(meikel) - ll -d /home/meikel --> drwx------ meikel:meikel - echo ${HOME} --> shows /home/meikel So the directory /home/meikel is definitely there. Can someone explain the error message "No directory /home/meikel!" and give any hints about possible problem causes? How can it say that the directory isn't here but I can see all the data? I’m trying to install the nvidia driver on centos 7.1. I see instructions to remove nouveau and disable the kernel module. When I create this file and put this options in: disable-nouveau.conf blacklist nouveau options nouveau modeset=0 and reboot, and run the nvidia installer again, it says nouveau kernel driver is installed. How do I disable the nouveau kernel driver in 7.1? Is it different than in 7.0? Thanks, -wes

Multiple network cards - routing issue?

I have a Centos 5 machine here that, up until about a year ago, was happily running Icecast and serving streaming audio through through three network connections, consisting of one "local" connection (local address 192.168.1.5) and two cable modems to talk to the outside world. We shut this down about a year ago, but now I am attempting to get it going again on one outside connection instead of two. Simply changing the IP address on one of the network cards to use the new address isn't working, so the notes that I made when I set this thing up in the first place must be incomplete since I'm obviously missing something here. I have two "active" IP addresses that I want to use at the moment. eth0 is 192.168.1.5 and is working fine. I can log into the server with ssh and run icecast and listen to streaming audio just fine. eth1 is now supposed to be 204.83.105.1 so I configured the new address on that card with system-config-network. The third card (eth2) I plan to ignore for the time being so I haven't changed that or done anything with it at all. My /etc/iproute2/rt_tables looks like this. I haven't changed it from what it was when I originally set this thing up a few years ago. # # reserved values # 255 local 254 main 253 default 0 unspec # # local # #1 inr.ruhep 50 access1 60 access2 Note the access1 and access2 entries at the bottom of the file. I then ran the following three commands: ip route add 204.83.15.0/24 dev eth1 table access1 ip route add default via 204.83.15.254 dev eth1 table access1 ip rule add from 204.83.15.1/32 lookup access1 These are the same commands that I used to set up the previous Internet connection on this server -- The only thing that I have changed was the IP addresses. Here is the output from "ip route show": [root@audio ~]# ip route show 192.168.1.0/24 dev eth0 proto kernel scope link src 192.168.1.5 204.83.15.0/24 dev eth1 proto kernel scope link src 204.83.15.1 169.254.0.0/16 dev eth1 scope link default via 204.83.15.254 dev eth1 That seems to indicate that the default route is 204.83.15.254 which is the correct gateway number for that Internet connection. However, a ping or traceroute command (ping google.com or whatever) gives me no output. I've missed a step somewhere. I hooked my laptop up to that Internet connection to insure that the modem and whatnot is working and it is, so there's obviously something wrong with my configuration. I see that bareos is, actually, the descendent of bacula. I've been looking at some of the documentation, and searching, but one thing I'd like to find out, before I try to implement it, and that I haven't found yet: am I going to have to play games, to get it to back up to online storage, as opposed to tape? (I suppose I'm thinking tar, here, as "no games".) Is there some default setup for this scenario? mark

mysql client ssl connection failure

The problem and solution is posted here for posterity. On a production CentOS 5.11 system, I recently had a cron job that started failing. One of the thing that the cron job does is connect to a MySQL server via TCP using SSL. Debugging things got me to the point where invoking the mysql client would result in: % mysql ERROR 2026 (HY000): SSL connection error (Not exactly informative.) Given that there have been recent openssl updates, I figured the problem was there, however the lack of any decent debug output from mysql/openssl made it hard to figure out. After going down a few false starts, including looking at the SSL certificate and root CA, I found this: <https://github.com/iuscommunity-pkg/mysql55/issues/4> It turns out that the default cipher for the mysql client is hardcoded, and the one specified is no longer supported in the server. The solution is to add to /etc/my.cnf (or ~/.my.cnf) the following (or the equivalent for your preferred cipher) to the client section(s): ssl-cipher=AES128-SHA Devin

I am able to log onto the host via console. And I was able to grab the ssh config file. CentOS 7.1 doesn't seem to have a functional default pdf reader installed (interesting)

Hi; This is the first time that I've installed CentOS 7.1 with a GUI (I've just used a CLI previously). I'd like to read a pdf file and I don't see any pdf reader applications installed by default. This seems unusual to me. So I see that gs is installed, but it doesn't really work very well for me as I can't seem to scroll to the next page. So what pdf reader application should I install (preferably open source) that will install itself to the menu along with Shotwell? It looks like Gnome desktop. Thanks, Ken Wolcott

Lenovo T420 internal microphone not working

Hello, I have CentOS 7.1 installed on my Lenovo T420 Notebook. Now I will start to have some online meetings for a software project. In Bios the I/O-settings for camera and microphone are enabled. Camera is working (tested with cheese). In the audio settings of Gnome perferences I see an internal microphone which doesn't produce any input. The microphone is also not disabled by the key on the keyboard. Where can I take a look at? Thank you in advance Tim

OT, hardware: HP smart array drive issue

Hi. Anyone working with these things? I've got a drive in "predictive failure" on in a RAID5. Now here's the thing: there was an issue yesterday when I got in, and I wound up power cycling the RAID; first boot of attached server had issues, and said the controller had a failure, and a drive had failed, and wouldn't continue booting; when I gave it the three-finger salute, this time on the way up, during POST, it noted the controller issue... but the thing came up, looking like it did a couple of days ago. Trying to prevent this from happening again, I've decided to replace the drive that's in predictive failure. The array has a hot spare. I tried to remove, using hpacucli, it refuses "operation not permitted", and there doesn't *seem* to be a "mark as failed" command. *Do* I just yank the drive? mark

ssh failed only with nfs home directory

Hey all, Having a weird ssh issue I'd like some opinions on. If I have my home directory mounted on the NFS server itself, I get permission denied when I try to ssh into it. The correct permissions and ownership are on the home directory, ssh directory and the authorized_users file. Bond & Team: RX dropped packets

Hi all, we are testing CentOS 7 in order to migrate from Scientific Linux 6 / CentOS 6 and we are facing an issue with the network. Trying to configure network with teaming in activebackup mode or also with bonding in mode=1 (active backup as well) we see many RX dropped packets in the bond0 interface (around 10% of the total), 100% RX drops in the backup interface and 0% in the active interface. Current kernel is 3.10.0-229.7.2.el7.x86_64, and I tried with included ixgbe driver (4.0.1) and with by compiling the newest version (ixgbe-4.1.1-1.x86_64), results are the same. We use tagged VLANs, but switch has configured a correct VLAN, a we saw no problems when this machine was running Scientific Linux 6 (CentOS 6-like system). Any ideas? Bonds & Bridge best practices

Hi All I have two bond interfaces namely, bond0 and bond1. bond0 has two ethernet interfaces associated with it and bond1 also has two ethernet interfaces associated with it. Now i create a bridge interface namely br20 (20 being the VLAN) and assign it a IP Address , subnet mask and the default gateway. I will use this IP to reach the server. So it is like a management bridge for me. Secondly this bridge is associated with the bond0.20 Can i create another bridge namely cr20 ( 20 being the VLAN ) on the bond1 interface ? This bridge does not have any ip address associated with it. I just want to use it for guest VMs. Is this the correct way to configure ? Thanks Jatin

Modifying RHEL OVAL CVE feed for use with CentOS 7

Hi all. I am curious if anyone has experience using the OVAL tests for CVEs provided by Red Hat (https://www.redhat.com/security/data/metrics/) for CentOS 7. I was able to get the tests working for the non modified packages provided by RHEL but not the packages modified by CentOS. I believe this is because CentOS 7 no longer has minor versions (PACKAGE.VERSION.el7.*.rpm) whereas RHEL does (PACKAGE.VERSION.el7_1.*.rpm) so the CVE check thinks that the package is out of date. Any ideas? Thanks

Migrating to IdM

I have just started looking through the RHEL6 IdM guide, and while the documentation seems quite thorough and extensive, the examples are somewhat on the weak side. Migration scenarios can be much more complex - e.g. migrating away from NIS while at the same time moving to LDAP or AD for user account management. Is anyone aware of any tutorials or guidelines for such a situation? Then there are a number of technical questions that are unclear - are there equivalents for the standard yp* tools (enumeration via ldapsearch may be restricted by policy); can there be local (to the IdM server, not machine) users that are not in LDAP/AD; can there be local passwords for users; etc.etc. Should CentOS7 be considered over CentOS6?

Wrapper script for shutdown, passwd, etc. commands

Hello all. Thank you for reading. I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction here. I am looking to implement a wrapper script/utility that will prompt for a ticket number before running certain commands. I've used similar scripts in the past on systems that I didn't have admin access. The wrapper would do something like this: [root@vm-helios-019] shutdown -h now *** WARNING *** You are attempting to shutdown a production server: vm-helios-019.digitalhermit.com Please enter the Change Log Ticket for shutdown CHG-FL-102122 Please confirm by entering your login password: xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Ticket number CHG-GL-102122 for user Kwan Lowe (klowe) has been logged at Sun Feb 4, 2001 at 14:23 (2:23PM). Ideally this would only kick in if the request is coming from an interactive session. Thinking about it, just replacing the command with a wrapper could cause other problems. CentOS 7 + Dell Latitude E6420 laptop = thermal shutdown

Hi, Thanks for reading this. I installed CentOS 7 (tried the latest ISO image and the previous build) on the laptop and got to the point where I am logging into the desktop environment and the laptop just shuts down. I check the event log in BIOS and find that a thermal event has occurred and the system powered off to prevent damage. I can take the same laptop with Windows 7 installed and run graphically intensive tests for an hour solid and it doesn't lock up. I installed Ubuntu 15.04 and that seemed solid too. Is this a known issue with CentOS 7? Should I be using a particular boot option? It does not seem to matter whether Gnome or KDE is chosen as the desktop environment. Any help you can provide is appreciated. Thanks.

I was wondering, where is the format and options of files like /usr/share/system-config-netboot/pxelinux.cfg/default from system-config-netboot-cmd described? There are plenty of PXE tutorials with examples out there, but nothing that looks like actual documentation.

Other repos have it but that may not be an option for me due to other reasons.... No problem. So I started thinking about does GPG support something similiar like mcrypt? Easy way to encrypt a line for URL. That is where my goal lies... Way to encrypt a URL string with what is "standard" in CentOS 6. Thanks, Jerry

Installing from USB

I found this http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/InstallFromUSBkey So for centos 7 if did the dd command seemed to work great. I did the install. So now I'd like to "modify" the USB key to add a boot menu option with my customer install options. I mounted /dev/sdb2 and edited the file /mnt/usb/EFI/BOOT/grub.conf added my menu item and rebooted to try to use it. It does not show up in the menu. How do I get the USB to use my new menu? Both the puppet server and the monitor1 client share the same /home directory via NFS. Pretty cool that you picked up on that! I do suspect you're probably right that this may be causing the problem. Just on a hunch, I tried copying the certs and keys from the montior1 host over to the puppet host to the /tmp directory on the puppet server. That leaves out NFS altogether. And when I do that, my bacula puppet module WORKS!! Puppet doesn't complain at all! But if I check out another host where I copied the cert and key from the NFS home directory I still get the error: Error: /Stage[main]/Bacula::Config/File[/etc/pki/tls/private/monitor2.mydomain.com.key]: Could not evaluate: Could not retrieve information from environment production source(s) puppet:///modules/bacula/monitor2/monitor2.mydomain.com.key Error: /Stage[main]/Bacula::Config/File[/etc/pki/tls/certs/monitor2.mydomain.com.crt]: Could not evaluate: Could not retrieve information from environment production source(s) puppet:///modules/bacula/monitor2/monitor2.mydomain.com.crt Also when I try to set context using the line you suggested I get an error: #semanage fcontext -a -t passenger_t "/etc/puppet/environments(/.*)?" ValueError: Type passenger_t is invalid, must be a file or device type So I googled around and found what seems to be the correct syntax: semanage fcontext -a -t passenger_exec_t "/etc/puppet/environments(/.*)?" Because when I applied that line, I didn't get any errors or complaints. However the problem still existed on the monitor2 host which had the key pair copied from the NFS share. So in summary it appears that there is some interaction between SELinux and NFS that is causing the issue. Any thoughts? Mounting NFS file systems via Nautilus on CentOS 6

Hi, I'm trying to set up my "work" laptop, which has CentOS 6.6, for easy NFS access to a "NAS" disk at home. I can't set for a normal "permanent" mount, since most of the time, the filesystem will not be available. I know several different ways to mount temporarily from the command line, but I was hoping I could set up the system so I could mount by clicking in the file browser (Nautilus.) I can't seem to find a way to do this, though. I've tried two different approaches: 1. Add an entry of the form server:/directory /directory nfs rw,users,noauto to /etc/fstab. 2. Add a location of the form /net/server/directory to Bookmarks - as the filesystem is mounted automatically when entering this location, provided that autofs is enabled with the default configuration. Unfortunately, neither of these methods work out quite right. Setting up fstab as outlined in 1. means that I can mount the filesystem as a regular user by issuing "mount /directory", but I can't find a direct way to issue this command from the GUI: I actually thought a relevant entry would show up just like that under Places and/or computer:///, but apparently not. This could be related to what's described in https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=536292, although it mentions that the problem is fixed in GNOME 2.28, and I thought the CentOS 6 had a newer version than that. Method 2. does cause the filesystem to be mounted, but the problem is that it happens too often. The idea was of course that the mount would occur when selecting the bookmark, but it looks like Nautilus will actually try to access the location before that, so that the filesystem pretty much stays mounted at all times. If the disk is available, that is, I haven't tested yet what happens when it isn't, but others with different Linux variants report that Nautlius will lock up completely because it can't get data for the location. So, does anyone have any idea how to best set up the system do to what I want (see above)? I guess I might create special "mount" and "unmount" launchers, but I'd prefer a solution that's more integrated with the normal file browser operation. Thanks, - Toralf

Is there a way to use GPG to encrypt a URL line with parameters ? I was looking at libmcrypt also but it is not part of CentOS. I have found examples for mcrypt but not for gpg. Thoughts? Thanks. jerry

Oddity: I had the drive out for more then five minutes while getting it out of the sled, putting the new one in, oh, and dusting out the slot (gotta do that for all of them, next maintenance window), but after I put in the replacement, and used hpacucli to check, to my surprise it was rebuilding with the replacement, *not* with the spare. mark

mcrypt 2.6.8 on centos 6

I downloaded mcyrpt 2.6.8, untar, cd into the tree and did ./configure and I get errors. checking for gcc option to accept ISO C89... (cached) none needed checking dependency style of gcc... (cached) gcc3 checking for libmcrypt-config... no checking for libmcrypt - version >= 2.5.0... no *** Could not run libmcrypt test program, checking why... *** The test program failed to compile or link. See the file config.log for the *** exact error that occured. This usually means LIBMCRYPT was incorrectly installed *** or that you have moved LIBMCRYPT since it was installed. In the latter case, you *** may want to edit the libmcrypt-config script: no configure: error: *** libmcrypt was not found I'm still on ./configure not the make Anyone installed from source? C-6.6 - sshd_config chroot SELinux issues

CentOS-6.6 We have sshd chroot working, mostly, for a particular groupid. However, we have two things that remain u/s, no doubt due to some omission on my part. Basically, we would like our users to be able to tunnel their https over the ssh connection to this server and be able to do X11 forwarding as well. At the moment both work when the user connects without chroot and neither works if they are chroot, even when the chroot directory is the actual system /.
