CentOS 6.6 and webcams

The issue of webcams not working with recent kernels on CentOS 6.6 has come up a number of times on the list. I'm happy to report that the latest kernel (2.6.32-504.8.1) appears to have fixed the problem. However, disabling NoScript for YouTube does not change the observed behaviour. It is decidedly odd in that the Flash video will not play until one sets the enable html5 option in YouTube. One of the artifacts of switching the html5 on in YT is that upon returning to the video page the video canvas shows an error message, with the 'Try again later' tag. But simply clicking on the video frame a second time starts the video. I am not sure what is going on. I have discovered that the same approach (switching on html5 in YouTube) has solved this issue for a least one of the impacted users. I will try it on others as the occasion permits. How To Record Sound Being Played

Hey all, I've installed MuseScore on my C6.6 machine. MuseScore is able to generate a midi sounding playback through the speakers of the active score. I want to capture that sound directly to a file without using a microphone. I want to send individual sound files to each of the members of my quartet with their part only. Is anyone using C7 in production yet? (sssd, nss-pam-ldapd, kerberos, etc)

Hi all, Is anyone using C7 in production with LDAP and kerberos? Currently all of my machines run C5 or C6 with nss-pam-ldapd or nss_ldap, with kerberos and pam_krb5 for authentication. Before I fire up a test VM (is it even worth it?) I wanted to check feedback from the community. Cheers! Dan

VLAN issue

Hello all, I have a machine running Centos 6.6 connected to a port on a Cisco Catalyst 3750 series switch. That port is part of VLAN 48. I have VLAN 48 on the CentOS machine too. The IP network on VLAN 48 is 192.168.48.0/255.255.255.0. The address on the CentOS side is 192.168.48.101, the address on the Linux end ought to be 192.168.48.100. When I only bring up eth0.48 VLAN device with the IP=192.168.48.100 I have no connectivity. If I bring it up along with eth0 with another VLAN 48 address assigned to it (for instance, 192.168.48.99) I do have connectivity. Also, strangely enough, sometimes to get things going I have to disconnect the Linux host from the switch - physically detach the wire and reconnect it again. Be that as it may when I just bring up the VLAN by itself I have thus far been unable to get anywhere. Has anybody seen a situation like this? Does anybody have an explaination for it? Thanks. Centos 7 | Rebind ctrl + alt + f# keystroke to application

Hello, I am new to Centos and this mailing list. I have an application (IntelliJ IDEA) which uses the ctrl+alt+f# key combinations to provide shortcuts. The keystrokes are bind to the ttys virtual consoles. Is there anyway to rebind the keystrokes to the application? I tried the following solution (xorg.conf edit) but my PC freezes during boot process. I had to rollback the xorg.conf changes to get the GNOME session. nfs-server in centos 7 - no error message from chown/chmod commands on clients

Hi, we are using centos 7 as an nfs-server. Chown / chmod on all linux clients (RH5,6, Ubuntu 14.04) don't get any errors from unallowed chown/chmod commands. Return-code is 0. e.g. ls -al test.txt -rwxrwxr-x 1 sanderso users 0 26. Jan 15:09 test.txt chown otheruser test.txt echo $? 0 ls -al test.txt -rwxrwxr-x 1 sanderso users 0 26. Linux client for Checkpoint VPN?

Hello all, Does anybody know if there is a modern Linux client compatible with the latest versions of Checkpoint VPN ( http://www.checkpoint.com/ )? They used to have a Linux client back in the day but that seems to have been discontinued. Is anybody able to connect to a Checkpoint VPN server from their Linux machine? How to prevent root from managing/disabling SELinux

At work I'm used to tools like eTrust Access Control (aka SEOS). eTrust takes away the ability to manage the eTrust config from root and puts it in the hands of "security admin". So there's a good separation of duties; security admin control the security ruleset, but are limited by the OS permissions (so even if they granted themselves permission to modify /etc/shadow, the standard OS permissions would block them) and system admins control the OS (so they can be root, but can't override eTrust). Ideally this type of separation would be useful in the SELinux world as well. OK, maybe this is a bit of an overkill for my own machines, but then I do have bastion hosts and internal segmented networking at home; I do overkill at times :-) The problem is that I can't see how to prevent this. There are too many access points (not just the CLI tools but the pp files and the /sys tree and I don't know what else). I do note that /etc/selinux has selinux_config_t and /sys/fs/selinux has security_t so maybe a policy that deny's everyone except a new security_admin_t permission to modify those files might work? Has anyone actually attempted this? -- rgds Stephen

Hi, I have a Centos7 host with libvirt, attempting to boot a Centos7 guest. I am attempting to do the install over ipv6 (because why not). I have the following network configuration. Cisco 3550 gi0/1 <-> eno1 (Centos7) host. gi0/1 is configured as: switchport trunk encapsulation dot1q switchport trunk allowed vlan 1-17 switchport mode trunk Mainly in question is vlan11 as this is the network I am trying to work with. A fedora 20 system connected to gi0/2, with identical network configuration and switch does not suffer this issue when booting guests. This has left me quite stumped as to what I am doing wrong on the Centos7 host, or if there is another issue. And help would be greatly appreciated in helping solve this issue.

General question about understanding PCI passthrough

Greetings - I saw Andrew Holway's post yesterday referencing using PCI passthrough as a solution to someone else's issue. Not being familiar with it, the post made me look into it more to see if it is something to use for my setup. From my research on the web, I have two questions to make sure I understand how PCI passthrough works. 1. If you use PCI passthrough on a graphics card to allow a virtual guest direct access to the graphics card for it use, does the host still have use of the graphics card also? 2. Or, once you pass it to the guest, the host can then no longer use it and has to rely on base level motherboard graphics? It looks from my reading that using PCI passthrough you can make the graphics card available to multiple guest simultaneously, but it seemed to imply that the host could no longer use it. With the box that I am configuring, I was planning on installing Linux Mint (Cinnamon Desktop) as my kvm host, then installing Win7 as a virtual guest. Since I use some mapping software in Win7 it would be nice to be able to use the graphics card via PCI passthrough, but not at the expense of loosing it from the Mint Cinnamon Desktop. However if multiple kvm guests can use the graphics card simultaneously (but the host can not), the maybe I should use CentOS as a very basic host and then make both Mint and Win7 guests. Hi ALL, Sorry for this if it is a stupid question, but: Is it possible to native boot centos from a VHD/VHDX file in a similar way to Windows 8.1? I am hoping to dual 'native' boot Windows 8.1 and CentOS; but then I want to Image the disk to deploy it to other classroom machines. Any help advice would be appreciated. I've had an unsuccessful play with easybcd's neogrub; and I have a working CentOS VM in Hyper-V - but it's the native boot I'm really interested in. Regards Darren

Reason for removing php-mcrypt from CentOS 6/7

Does anybody know why php-mcrypt was removed from the extras repo when CentOS 6 came out? I've been going through the archives and I saw plenty of people complain about it but no explanation for the reason. I know it's available in EPEL but I want to avoid third party repos if at all possible. If for some reason it became no longer advisable to use php-mcrypt in production then knowing that reason would be helpful.

SELinux permissions for apache

Hey all, I have a simple php app working that writes some info to a text file. The app will only work correctly if SELinux is disabled. If it's enabled and try to use the app, it fails. It seems that SELinux is denying the app ability to write to the text file. So I tried running the following command: chcon -R -t httpd_sys_content_t /var/www And tried veriying the command with the following: ls -RZ /var/www And everything seems to be in order. For example I see: -rw-r--r--. apache apache system_u:object_r:httpd_sys_content_t:s0 vieworders.php But the app stil won't function correctly unless SELinux is set to off. Systems with more recent versions of FF fail to play while those people with older versions have no problem. Unfortunately we work in a regulatory regime that requires constant updating and the government contractors providing the updates tend to use Flash as their preferred platform, albeit not on YouTube so the html5 setting is not available in those cases. So, I need some way of overriding this 'fascist nannyism'. Is there a way to stop FF blocking Flash or do I revert to older versions of FF to regain the functionality? Socket behavior change from 6.5 to 6.6

I will try to explain this as best I can. I have two computers; one a Supermicro X10SAE running CentOS 6, the other a very old DOS box.[*] The DOS box runs a CCD camera, sending images via Ethernet to the X10SAE. Thus, the X10SAE runs a Python server on port 5700 (a socket which binds to 5700 and listens, and then accepts a connection from the DOS box; nothing fancy).[**] The DOS box connects to the server and sends images. This all works great, except: When the DOS box exits, crashes, or is rebooted, it fails to shut down the socket properly. Under CentOS 6.5, upon reboot, when the DOS box would attempt to reconnect, the original accepted server socket would (after a couple of connection attempts from the DOS box) see a 0-length recv and close, allowing the server to accept a new connection and resume receiving images. Under CentOS 6.6, the server never sees the 0-length recv. The DOS box flails away attempting to reconnect forever, and the server never seems to get any type of signal that the DOS box is attempting to reconnect. Possibly relevant facts: - The DOS box uses the same local port (1025) every time it tries to connect. It does not use a random ephemeral port. - The exact same code was tested on a CentOS 6.5 and 6.6 box, resulting in the described behavior. The boxes were identical clones except for the O/S upgrade. - The Python interpreter was not changed during the upgrade, because I run this code using my own 2.7.2 install. However, both glibc and the kernel were upgraded as part of the O/S upgrade. My only theory is that this has something to do with non-ephemeral ports and socket reuse, but I'm not sure what. It is entirely possible that some low-level socket option default has changed between 6.5 and 6.6, and I wouldn't know it. It is also possible that I have been relying on unsupported behavior this whole time, and that the current behavior is actually correct. Does anyone have any insight they can offer? [*] Hardware is not an issue; in fact, I have two identical systems, each of which has one X10SAE and three DOS boxes. But the problem can be boiled down to a single pair. [**] I'm actually using an asyncore.dispatcher to do the bind/listen, and then tossing the accept()ed socket into an asynchat. Therefore I am not sure what this avc is telling us. We use Fail2Ban on a number of other Inetenet facing hosts. We have not yet detected anything similar on those, although until this morning's descovery we never really looked for this situation specifically. To check and see if anything was off kilter in the contexts I ran restorcon -Rv on /sbin and on /usr and restarted Fail2Ban. Is there something wrong with SETroubleShoot? I can work around these avcs with a local policy but in the event the issue is not our error this may have wider implications so I am posting the details here. I was trying to get a new Canon laser printer LBP-7110CW to work with a CentOS 6 machine. It already has an older Canon multi-function laser MF-4720W which worked fine. Both printers are connected via wireless. The new printer works fine from a Windows machine. The web-based GUI can be accessed from the C6 machine without problem either. However, CUPS cannot "discover" the printer when adding a new printer although it could probe it successfully if I provide the IP address. Neither could the Canon provided cnnst application find the printer on its own. This appeared to be related to iptables since it would discover the printer if I disable iptables. I assume the discovery is done by SNMP so it is a little odd why iptables have to be disabled for the C6 machine to find the printer which is the "server" so to speak. Ignoring that, the new printer still cannot print after being added. A process c3pldrv gets stuck at 100% cpu utilization when a print job is sent. A new c3pldrv process will spawn for each print job and remain for hours if I don't manually kill it. Throughout this time, the printer can be accessed via its web management gui from the same machine and there is no problem printing to the older multi-function printer. So network connectivity doesn't appear to the problem. It also doesn't make a difference whether I set CUPS to use raw socket or lpd. The C6 system was updated to the latest files and the latest UFR-II drivers from Canon was downloaded and installed. Anybody has any experience or clue about what might be the problem?

Where to configure proxy NDP in startup scripts?

Hi! For my network setup I need the following commands: sysctl -w net.ipv6.conf.all.proxy_ndp=1 ip -6 neigh add proxy 1234:5678:9abc:def0::2 dev eth2 The first command goes to /etc/sysctl.conf to enable it after a reboot. But where do I put the "ip -6 neigh add proxy"? Best regards Franz

Kickstarting several *different* setups

I'm currently using kickstart for installing new servers and have run into the following scenario: all the machines will have the same basic setup of packages, however they will each be configured for a specific task. For example, some will be mail-serving machines and won't need things like a web or mySQL server installed. Others will be web servers and do need those packages. So my question is, is there some way do determine via kickstart, what to install on that machine based on some criteria, possibly the IP that's being assigned to it, or MAC address, or something ... Right now I have one single kickstart setup that all the machines are going to use, then I manually install the additional packages one by one, on each machine. It would be helpful if I can somehow tell kickstart to do that. Suggestions?

Hey All, I just installed the newest version of Firefox that was pushed to production today. When I started Firefox the CentOS 7 Is Here splash screen was displayed. shutdown -h doesn't

I've got a fresh CentOS 7 test machine, fully patched. The command: shutdown -h now surprisingly does not halt the machine. Instead it reboots it. WTF? I found the following Debian discussion which seems to be the same issue: <https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=766338> However, removing kexec-tools in this case did not solve the problem. Nor does "systemctl poweroff" work. Does anyone else see this? No, nothing is filed in bugzilla yet. Devin

What's up with Firefox/Thundrebird

Hey All, Has anyone had trouble with Firefox/Thunderbird? When I log on if I start Thunderbird first then I can't start Firefox. Clicking on a link in an email fails to start Firefox. If I start Firefox before Thunderbird then hyperlinks in emails open a page in the existing Firefox instance. Other users on this same machine are having the same problems. This has been happening for that last several days. Hey all, I'm trying to learn how to use some of the big data stores. Specifically I want to learn how to use CassandraDB and Hadoop. Originally I'd had the idea of trying to setup a cassandra ring on the Amazon AWS free tier. However it seems that neither will run on a t2.micro instance. So I was wondering.. what are some really cheap VPS services that you like to use for one off projects like this and why. I'm looking for dirt cheap as possible.
