Zone file not written to slave DNS server

I have mostly succeeded in getting master and slave DNS servers operational. Mostly, because the zone file is not written when a zone is updated on the master server when the notify and transfer process happens. The slave DNS server gets the changes to the modified zone, but the slave zone file remains as before. I've found a few tutorials and lots of discussions, many of which talk about the slave's zone file getting written upon transfer, but none mention what configuration option would cause the slave's files to get updated. The master is on a Cantos 6 server and the slave is on a Cantos 7 machine. Any ideas? Emmett

analog web log analyzer

Analog (a) no longer seems to be maintained and (b) rebuilding the old source rpm on CentOS7 ends up with a conflict with a file named /usr/bin/analog that is owned by anaconda. So, taking a step back: is there a better tool for apache log analysis now? One feature of analog that I haven't been able to match with anything else is that you can rsync a tree of log files from a farm of servers into one place and invoke analog with a wild-card to expand all of their names on the command line and it will digest them all without the need to pre-sort in timestamp order. -- Les Mikesell lesmikesell(a)gmail.com

Failure to start HTTPD after the most `yum update` on CentOS 7

After nss-softokn-freebl upgraded to 3.14.3-19, it doesnt provide file: /usr/lib64/libfreebl3.chk If we try to install/reinstall kernel, or try mkinitrd. it will fail. I can reproduce this problem on EL 6.6, I think it should be a serious problem... since later yum update kernel will report success(tiny warning), but os reboot will crash. -- Regards, -suse

[OT] MS-Windows question - user has remapped function keys.

Forgive the out of band topic but I presume some of you here support MS desktops on your CentOS based services as do we. I am hoping that maybe one of you have run into this at some point. I am unable to find an answer on other forums and my google fu seems to have left me on this subject. I have a user that has somehow managed to remap their function keys so that they no longer work properly on a MS-Winv7pro workstation. Specifically, pressing the function key F4 results in the letter 'S' being displayed. I have absolutely no idea how they managed this, they have no memory of what they were doing when it first happened, and I can find nothing on MS Technet or the usual support forums that recognize this condition. None of the other keys on the keyboard appear affected by the change. The remapping is specific to this user's DOMAIN profile. As we use roaming profiles the effect follows them from workstation to workstation. It does not affect other users that subsequently use the same workstation with their own logons. I believe that this situation is a result of some combination of keystrokes whilst in normal use as it is doubtful that this user would open anything other than their job related programs from desktop icon. I have verified that this issue is not application specific, it affects all of that user's programs, so it must be a Windows configuration issue and I suspect the accessibility functions. Anyone with relevant information or links to appropriate references please reply off list. I feel like I am on a wheel in a hamster cage with this recurring WinBS. restart after yum update (6.6)?

Hi, according to this : http://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/28144/after-yum-update-is-it-a-good… i should reboot my server after updating packages i.e: kernel, glibc, libc. Maybe it's a silly question, but Is it necessary if I don't use graphical environment ? (and don't want to use the latest kernel yet)

CentOS 7 LDAP TLS

Hello, have any a running ldap/TLS System. On my system it is not possible to configure this correct. I have a self signed CA and certificates. All i found with google is not working :-( Have any a hint to config this correct? My CA and certificates works with a SUSE installation correct? What is the difference to CentOS 7 ? gdbm update and GDBM_File

DJBDNS: very weird dnscache issue

Hello all, We have put a DNS server online running DJBDNS v1.06 (ndjbdns-1.06-1.el6.x86_64) on a 64-bit CentOS 6.6 server. We have done some limited testing on the machine which it passed - i.e., dnscache was talking to tinydns, the queries went through fine, etc. As soon as we put it online subjecting it to live load the following happened: 1) Within a short time period (about a minute) the dnscache process reached the CPU utilisation level of 100%. 2) The process would then die reporting the following message to the log: dnscache: BUG: out of in progress slots NOTE: Random sampling indicates that at no point sampled did the load exceed 200 requests per second. In tests conducted earlier the DNS server successfully demonstrated speeds in tens of thousands of requests per second. We then proceeded to edit the following parameters in the dnscache.conf as they seemed to be the only ones that seemed relevant: DATALIMIT and CACHESIZE. They are described as limints (in bytes) on the total data memory allocation and cache, default values are 80000000 and 50000000 respectively. Playing with these demonstrated some highly counterintuitive results: 1) Setting the values lower (say, an order of magnitude lower) made the dnscache process run longer. 2) Shortening the relative gap between the two values (for instance, setting DATALIMIT at 52000 and CACHE at 50000) made it run for about an hour vs about 1 minute, load seeming to be about the same. 3) Running it with DATALIMIT not set was possible though it eventually failed anyways. 4) Running it with CACHESIZE not set was not possible at all. So the issue is currently still not resolved and we are stuck. Any advice will be much appreciated. Cheers, Boris.

Hardware raid LSI Megaraid not working since Centos 6.6

Happy new year ! We have a SuperMicro server with a LSI MegaRAID 9260-4i controller. Since Centos 6.6 update (kernel 2.6.32-504), the controller doesn't initialize at boot. Reverting to kernel 2.6.32-431 allows server to boot fine. The server can't boot due to a bug in LSI megaraid module. Boot log ends by a lot of lines: RESET_GEN2: retry=xxx, hostdiag=a4 I tried Centos 6.6 install disk and it also fails to find disks but Centos 7 install disk boot fine. What we have seen is that because of the way the requires are done, it is possible to update some of these without updating others. As an example, using normal tools like yum, you can do 'yum update nss-softokn' and that will allow an older version of nss-softokn-freebl (as an example) to still be installed. This bug is not CentOS specific and an upstream bug is filed here: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1182337 We are therefore going to re-release the packages as they are behaving as expected. After Crash dracut kernel

Hello, I have two identical servers in hardware. I installed both with CentOS. I did LVM snapshots before updating to test LVM merging. On one server I merged all filesystem's during boot because they where mounted when I merged. The other server I did the snapshots, made my installations and configurations and made no merge because it worked on the other server. But I forgot to delete the snapshots and: n the night the server crashed. It rebooted to recovery kernel because it can't find the lvm volumes (module dm_snapshots was missing). Both servers have a difference. When they start one says CentOS (Core) at the end of the loading bar. The other with the crash says sth. about a dracut-Kernel while loading. What do I have to look for? Partitioning scheme on both servers: /boot: sda1 /: lvm /usr: lvm /var: lvm Swap: lvm Thanks in advance Tim

Almost. I've read that, and I can get it to work. I guess I could phrase my question as "Given that the default image for 6.6 and 7.0 do this, how do I make custom media that does it to?" When I make custom media, it only works off an actual DVD. I need help making custom media that has that USB/EFI magic in it.

Making custom USB install media

Hey List, I apologize for how broad this may be, but hopefully someone here can help me out. I need to make custom kickstart installers to be used in the field to install microservers (Intel NUCs, EFI boot) that don't have optical drives and may not have internet connections. I can make a custom ISO just fine using the pretty common steps, specifically following what's here: http://smorgasbork.com/component/content/article/35-linux/151-building-a-cu… My custom kickstart is on the disk, and along with all my packages, and everything works great on a VM as a CD image. The problem is I can't get this to install from USB. I can get it to boot from USB using the isohybrid tool, but the installer fails, can't find the squashfs image. I don't think this is the right way to do it. I know the CentOS 7 (and I believe 6.5) images have a "special" EFI partition that I believe is why USB works with the base image. The problem is I can't really find any information on how this works or how to recreate it. When I run fdisk -l on the image (as a loopback device) I see that the main image is on a partition marked as none, and then there's an EFI partition with start and end points actually inside the first partition? I'm afraid I don't really know what this is doing, or how to go about recreating. Can anyone explain this to me or point me at some documentation? Am I missing something obvious, like say the old Revisor tool that I should be using to make my life much easier? Any help would be much appreciated, -Matt

Hello, What types of tests does the CentOS Development Team do for software in its repositories? Where does it get its test catalog from? I want to create a testing process which is equal to if not more rigorous that the CentOS process for any third party software we use. For example, if I install the php-mysqlnd package from the Remi repository, I want to test it just as carefully as the php-mysql package has been tested before I get it from the CentOS repository. When will CentOS Publish Errata?

Hello, Currently The CentOS project publishes errata on its CentOS Announce mailing list. In order to import this into a package management system (like Katello on The Foreman), one needs to parse the mailing list and convert it into XML before importing it. This is done to some extent on http://cefs.steve-meier.de/ but some more legwork needs to be done before The Foreman can understand the errata like it does natively for RHN. I have heard rumour that The CentOS project is planning to publish Errata in the same way that Red Hat does, but I haven't been able to find anything on the Internet about this. 2460x1440 video card recommendation

Can someone recommend a video card that's capable of driving a monitor at 2560x1600 or 2560x1440 and just works with Centos 7 without requiring any outside video drivers? I would prefer to stay with the built-in video drivers that are included with Centos 7 if possible; I don't play games and such, so I'm not looking for high performance 3D -- I just want a high resolution desktop. CentOS 6.6 64-bit won't install on a 3 TB disk

Hello everyone, I'm having an issue getting a C6.6 install to work on a 3 TB dual hard drive system, raid 0. I'm hoping that someone here can help. So, I install as normal, but then reboot, and it comes to a grub prompt. Going into the system via Linux rescue, I see that most of the files dealing with the kernel haven't been installed. I asked the maker of the server and he said that they have noticed this happen recently. A solution is to put the kernel files on a thumb drive, and then point the OS to look for them there. I have yet to try it, but is there a better way to deal with this issue that anyone else has done? I have no argument against claiming the switch to xfs is substance, not fashion. But then again that change over, however beneficial, is nearly invisible to most of us; subsumed as it is in the overarching effort of setting up a new system from scratch. Once a host is set up its file-system certainly has little further discernible day-to-impact upon anyone, much less end-users. But Gnome3? Systemd? These seem highly intrusive changes that directly affect, often negatively, the daily tasks of many people. Are these substance or fashion? Do the changes they make fundamentally improve RHEL or just do the same things a little differently? How much is it worth to an Enterprise to have a similar desktop metaphor on the workstation as on a tablet? How many desktop workstations will be replaced by the smart-phone, the tablet? I do not have an answer but I suspect, not much and not many. What does systemd buy the enterprise that sysinit did not provide? Leaving aside upstart as a sterile diversion. I am not certain of anything here either. I have learned that my initial resistance to change, any change, is just as emotionally charged as that of the next person. So, I tend to wait and see. But, I do ask questions. If only to discover if I am alone in my concerns. I am but one person and I need the views of others, agreeable or disagreeable to my prejudices as the case may be, so as to form an informed opinion. I am admittedly somewhat concerned about the overall direction of the RHEL product. I fundamentally disagree with their Frozen Chosen approach to key software components. And with the lock-step forced upgrades that are the result. I am not at all certain that back-porting security fixes to obsolescent software is a profitable activity when often for much the same effort, if not less, the most recent software could be made to run on the older release without adverse effects elsewhere. However, I offer no answers and promote no particular course of action, saving only reflection of what is happening now and the price that is paid for it. C-6, Gnome question

Hi all! Using the default Gnome desktop on Centos-6, I keep having difficulty getting the mouse pointer to lineup exactly on the edge/corner of a window when I want to resize the window. It seems that you have to have it on a line exactly one pixel in width, and I'm finding it increasingly hard to do (who, me? getting old? nah!) Wondering if there is a gnome setting somewhere among the myriad settings that could be used to configure the accuracy with which the mouse pointer must be placed so one can grab edges of things. I've dug thru the settings in the Gnome configuration editor, but so far nothing leaps out at me. I don't know, but I get obnoxiously resistant (often to my own detriment) in such cases and tend to do things like my patch. Yep, long-term potential negatives, but sometimes it's worth it to me. E.g., a very long time ago, device drivers for network cards did not work well for a particular card I was using. So I grabbed the code and "Holy Crap". What a piss-poor bunch of code. And it didn't handle the hardware properly either. So I got the technical docs for the card, modified the driver, tested every edge condition I could think of and, when satisfied, made a patch and got it ready for contribution. Well, they changed maintainers while I was doing all that and the new code set was so far off what I was working with that my patch became useless. So I just used my driver for myself, making my effort worthwhile, but I wouldn't have been so stringent in the testing and commentary in the code if I had known what was happening. Lvm snapshot problem

Thunderbird randomly segfaults at startup

Anyone else seeing this? This is happening on a straight "Desktop" install of CentOS 6.6 fully updated. I have made no changes other than installing Thunderbird. Thunderbird will occasionally (10 to 20% of the time) fail to start, and the abrt report indicates a signal 11 (SIGSEGV). I don't see any other reports of this. Is no one using Thunderbird these days? Do abrt reports submitted from CentOS go anywhere useful these days? I saw some discussion a while back, but don't recall the results. logrotate script not working

Hey guys, Got a quick question and I hope this is an easy one! In my /etc/logrotate.conf file I have the following entry: # rotate all of the apache logs -- we'll rotate them here /var/log/mysqld.log { weekly size 50M create 0644 mysql mysql rotate 1 } And from that I would expect the log to rotate when it reaches 50M in size. However I just caught that log weighing in at 356MB!! So how can I get this log file to rotate when it hits 50MB? Any ideas, advice and help at all would be appreciated. Intel NUC? Any experience

Folks The price point of Intel's NUC unit makes it attractive to use as a server that doesn't have significant computational load. In my environment, a USB connected hard-drive could provide all the storage needed. I wonder if anyone has had experience with it, and can answer: 1) Does Centos6 and/or Centos7 install from a USB connected optical drive? or a USB flash drive? I'd prefer to do a NetInstall. If the answer is essentially no, there's no point in continuing. 2) Is the Ethernet connection supported by NetInstall and the subsequent OS? 3) Is it possible to add an additional NIC for possible use as a home router/gateway? If not internally, then via a USB connected NIC? Any thoughts on the subject would be appreciated. David San Francisco

LVM - pvmove and multiple servers

Hi All. Looking for some guidance/experience with LVM and pvmove. I have a LUN/PV being presented from a iscsi SAN. The LUN/PV is presented to 5 servers as a shared VG they all have LV's they use for data, they are all connected via iSCSI. As the SAN I am using is being replaced I need to move onto a new unit. My migration strategy at this time is to 1. Present a new LUN from the new SAN to all machines. 2. Make a PV with the new LUN. 3. Add it to the existing VG. 4. Use pvmove to move all the data from one PV to another. 5. Once the old LUN is empty, complete a pvresize to remove the old LUN. This all seems sound but looking for advice, specifically around the fact that the VG/PV data is being used by a number of machines/servers and the LV's are active on a number of different nodes. All the documentation/examples I can find assume a disk in a server, not a LUN on a SAN being shared by a number of servers. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks Daniel

Well, despite the hype from Wall St., Bay St. and The City, a large number of organisations in the world run on software that is decades old and cannot be economically replaced. In many instances in government and business seven years is a typical time-frame in which to get a major software system built and installed. And I have witnessed longer. So, seven, even ten, years of stability is really nothing at all. And as Linux seeks to enter into more and more profoundly valuable employment the type of changes that we witnessed from v6 to v7 are simply not going to be tolerated. In fact, it my considered belief that RH in Version EL7 has done themselves a serious injury with respect to corporate adoption for core systems. Perhaps they seek a different market? Think about it. What enterprise can afford to rewrite all of its software every ten years? What enterprise can afford to retrain all of its personnel to use different tools to accomplish the exact same tasks every seven years? The desktop software churn that the PC has inured in people simply does not scale to the enterprise. If you wish to see what change for change's sake produces in terms of market share consider what Mozilla has done with Firefox. There is absolutely no interface that is as easy to use as the one you have been working on for the past ten years. The oddly named 'UK-Ambassadors' or the narrowly focused language translation mailing lists for instance. That still leaves in excess of a hundred lists. Where should one apply pressure? What forum exists to discuss the economic costs to Enterprises of introducing a marginal, possibly questionable, improvement to an existing UI or common utility? The devel list? The users list? A perusal of the contents of both the Fedora devel list and users list does not give one much hope that such a point of view would be tolerated, much less welcomed. For example, one the the notable contributors to those forums is himself banned from this list. Further, discussions tend to be far, far down in the weeds, if not subterranean altogether, when viewed from the perspective of the question: what is this change, improvement, alteration or deprecation going to cost the installed base to implement? No, no-one presently on this list is likely to have very much of an impact on the folks that are the Fedora project. Their objectives are far removed from the concerns of those tasked to keep automated systems working and invisible to the Enterprises that employ them. The overarching concern of the Enterprise is to employ capital and labour to produce value; and not simply to prove technologies or advance personal or political agendas. Not that the later two situations are uncommon in the Enterprise either. One might, however, consider that the CentOS list is a concentration of people that evidently have some status within a number of Enterprises. And these influential people have chosen not to pay RH for their offering. It might be of some interest to RH in determining why this is so. It might also be the case that this forum, being concerned with issues such as deployment on a large scale and the costs of upgrading RH flagship product, provides valuable insight on how RH's paying customers might be viewing their product as well. After all, because we use CentOS rather than RHEL and forgo the provision of RH's expert advice, then we ourselves and our organisations are a self-identified technologically advanced user community. And we are concerned more with the entire package than with any particular component or detail. If we have concerns and reservations then perhaps RH should have concerns. If we express them here then there is a chance, a small chance but a chance nonetheless, that someone at RH with a view a little broader than that evidenced in most of the traffic on the Fedora devel list, might take notice. Camera doesn't works after "yum upgrade"

Hi, I've launched a "yum upgrade" command on a CentOS6 laptop which has updated nearly 600 packages. Automatic updates were not working because of a conflict on a package. So the laptop is now uptodate but the camera did not works after this. The message is: kernel: uvcvideo: Failed to query (GET_DEF) UVC control 6 on unit 2: -110 (exp. 2). The camera is detected as USB, lsusb shows: Bus 001 Device 003: ID 0c45:646b Microdia I've tryed to boot on alternative kernels but no change: - vmlinuz-2.6.32-504.3.3.el6.centos.plus.x86_64 (which solve a camera problem on my laptop) - vmlinuz-2.6.32-431.29.2.el6.x86_64 - vmlinuz-3.10.63-1.el6.elrepo.x86_64 Any idea about a faulty package ? I've added the upgrade log in attachment but it's quite big. The first four erased item were because of conflicts. Probing EDD (edd=off to disable)

Hi all! Running Centos-6.latest on an AMD six-core Vishera processor. It's been running for a year on that hardware. today I swapped out the video card (from Nvidia 9800GT to Nvidia 460 GTX) hoping to get a little more horsepower, and the ability to run the Folding At Home GPUclient. I know that's an old card, it's a hand-me-down from my son who just replaced it with a new 970 GTX card. So, I got the hardware installed, close up the case, connect all the cables, boot it up and booting stops with this message on the screen in plain text mode: Probing EDD (edd=off to disable) I can reboot and edit the kernel commandline to add "edd=off" at the end then it comes up all the way. I haven't made any changes in the Nvidia drivers, because nvidia's web site tells me it uses the same driver as the 9800GT card did. I'm using the RPMs from elrepo, so it uses akmod to do a rebuild when a new kernel is installed. But I didn't install a new kernel, so it didn't get rebuilt, and I'm wondering if that's the cause of the problem... different card works with the same driver version but may need recompiling due to the different hardware ????? If so, I don't think I know how to force akmod to do the rebuild. Thoughts/or actual knowledge on this would be appreciated. Also, among the googling I did, I found one posting that said that message means an unexpected (DOS??) interrupt occurred, but it did't help me any with how to resolve it. Your suggestions will be welcomed, thanks in advance! Customising a CentOS 6.6 installation disk

I apologise if this is not the appropriate list for the following issue, but... Is it possible to upgrade the Linux kernel on a kickstart CD? I've changed the vmlinuz and initrd.img files in the isolinux directory from the distro's ISO image; so kernel 2.6.32-504.3.3.el6.i686 now boots from a DVD, and loads the appropriate modules and firmware from the stage 1 initrd.img. However, anaconda (13.21.229) exits abnormally with a DBusException (org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply); possibly because NetworkManager is unable to launch the wpa_supplicant. Do I need to hack Wifi NIC related lines out of anaconda? The reason that I'd like the final kernel version to be running during the install, is that it's needed to compile the low-level driver for a FIPS-140 crypto coprocessor. The target system will be an off-line certification authority system, and will certainly not need Wifi (in fact the hardening procedure foresees removal of most network hardware drivers). I know I could do everything in three stages (initial install - software upgrade - crypto driver install); but being able to do everything in one go would simplify business continuity / bare metal recovery. In the meantime, I'm very happy to have learned something about anaconda / kickstart and so on, which will be very useful in future. If there's a quick fix to the above issues, I'd be happy to hear it. Question about Neighbour Table Overflow.

Hi, all When use Centos 6.5,kernel version 2.6.431, I have continuous messages of "Neighbour table overflow" in messages. I have modified the gc_thresh1(512) , gc_thresh2 (2048) gc_thresh3 (4096) in /proc/sys/net.. path, But the messages occurs occasionally. some forum saied: They are probably realted to a kernel bug where the thresholds are in fact only half of the value that is set. See http://patchwork.ozlabs.org/patch/170385/ --- I didn't figure it out whether it is a bug and it is fixed . Why did this happen? Who can give me hand. Thanks.

SSI?

All, What is the state of SSI (single system image) on CentOS 6/7 these days? I'm interested in this at present just for the fun aspect of trying it. Obviously openMosix is no more, but OpenSSI, Kerrighed and LinuxPMI appear to be dormant. TIA, Steve
