X, why did it have to be X

I have one user. We've pretty much all got two monitors, but he insists on rotating both of them vertically - that is, they're taller than they are wide, and he's got a Radeon card. I always have X grief on his system when I update it.... I just did a full update. X comes up in both screens... but the left one is *not* rotated, while the right one is. And they're mirrored. I've logged in as root, looked at all the configuration I know of, and nothing tells it to mirror, or one rotate and the other not. But when I use the menu, and go to system->preferences-display, it shows mirror screens *always* checked. I uncheck that, and hit apply, and nothing happens. I move the one off from over the other, and rotate the other, and still, nothing at all happens, and I don't see anything written, anywhere. Suggestions? mark

As someone said before, you don't need to use "the latest and greatest" to run a functional service... On a production environment that is even often undesirable until things settle down... Anyway, Sernet also provides a source rpm. Why not build up from that base?

I dunno if this ours, or an upstream enhancement, but I was just rebuilding a 6.5 box with 7. I selected custom formatting. 1. It seems to autoselect *ALL* drives. I would strongly argue that it should *only* select the first drive, or whichever is already bootable. That could be disastrous if someone doesn't notice they're all selected. 2. There's NO BACK BUTTON once you get into the select mount points, etc, screen. The only way back seems to be a reboot. mark

yum updates not working

I think my software updates are not working. I know a Firefox update was announced yesterday but when I try sudo yum update I get a message saying that no packages are marked for update. I tried sudo yum clean all but I still get the same response. Any suggestions? Joe

Hi! I installed CentOS 7 today, it's a minimal install, so it didn't have ifconfig command. So I installed net-tools, however I can't add ipv6 address to it. # ifconfig enp0s3 add fc00::1002/124 SIOCSIFADDR: Permission denied. Yes, I'm running as root. CentOS is running in a Qemu instance with e1000 ethernet card.

lost packets - Bond

Firefox-31 STARTTLS cipher strengh degraded?

Has anyone else experienced a degraded symmetric key exchange when using FF-31 vice FF24? When I use FF24 then I get a symmetric type of AES-256 (Very Strong) rating in Calomel 0.62. When I switch to FF31 and connect to exactly the same server host and url then in Calomel 0.62 I see this instead: TLS_DHE_RSA_WITH_AES_256_CBC_SHA (Very Weak). My original commands were sudo netstat -tulpn | less sudo lsof | less I have several CentOS 6.5 machines and only one shows these odd ports. I have also run chkrootkit and used clamscan to check filesystems. It may be harmless but my curiosity is killing me.

I normally only use EPEL as an addition repo, but one package I want to install on this one system is ffmpeg, and I'm finding it on rpmforge only... but its install wants to mix epel and rpmforge packages... saving at jobs

I can easily save cron jobs in a file by doing this: crontab -l > file.txt And I can restore it with crontab file.txt Is there any way to do the same thing with at jobs? mirrorlist returns wrong servers

Hi, We're using CentOS on various servers in Japan. Recently, I found that mirrorlist.centos.org returns servers in China. It makes "yum update" slow. This problem occurs on "update" repo. repoquery -f does not work well.

Hi. I've found inconstancy between output of repoquery and rpm. I was looking forward towards apache php 5.4 module which must provided by some package SCL (can someone tell me?). rpm -qf /etc/httpd/modules/mod_proxy.so httpd-2.2.15-29.el6.centos.x86_64 repoquery -qf /etc/httpd/modules/mod_proxy.so so repoquery results in no output yum list installed httpd Loaded plugins: fastestmirror Loading mirror speeds from cached hostfile * c6-media: Installed Packages httpd.x86_64 2.2.15-29.el6.centos @c6-media repoquery -qa httpd httpd-0:2.2.15-29.el6.centos.x86_64 No wonder libphp5.so results in no output.

bizarre problem with performance

Hi, I am running centos6-5 on dell620 blades. mirrored local root drives several (including home) mounted filesystems. The other blades are working fine. Top indicates the server is running 1% cpu, and very little memory (idleing) There is no error in the messages file There is no amber lights on the server. When I log into my server it is fine, on my remote mounted home directory. When I cd to root (local disk) and I type ls it just hangs. I ran top, the system is basically idle I ran ifconfig and everything looks good. when I ran df -h it hangs when I run ls on my home directory it is fine when I run ls on my root directory it hangs when I run df -k it hangs I can go into any remote mounted directory and everything works fine. any suggestions.

Digging into this, as we rework it, here's a question: assuming the system being pxebooted is server 1, and the tftp server is server 2, on server 2, in the menu for pxeboot, is there any way to specify that the image to boot, and the initrd, are on a server 3? That is, MENU repoboot KERNEL repo://my/repo/images/vmlinuz APPEND repo://my/repo/images/initrd.img (or an IP address, like 192.168.1.13, for the server named repo)? mark

Hi. I have installed Zabbix 2.2.6 on CentOS 6.5. Question not too relative to CentOS, but hope somebody can help with it. All triggers works correctly, but venti:system.users.num.last(0)}>0 - dont't. Hi, folks, I'm installing a RAID controller card for a large external RAID box in a Dell server. I've got two riser slots available. Here's the question: the controller card has some large chips on one side, and if I put it in riser 1, those chips face downwards in the box, blocking ease of cooling, while if I put it in riser 2, the chips will face up... but be right over a large chip on the m/b that's got a heat sink. Opinions on which slot to use? mark

Advice on CentOS 7, software raid 1, lvm, 3 TB disks

Greetings - I am preparing to order a new desktop system for work. In general the new system will be a Dell Precision T3610 with two 3 TB drives. I plan on installing CentOS 7 as a KVM host, with virtual machines for Win 7 Pro and Linux Mint. I am looking for some advice or a good how-to on configuring software raid on the two drives, then using LVM for the host and virtual machines. I have configured our company server (Dell T610) with hardware raid and LVM for a CentOS 6 KVM host and several virtual machines so I am not a complete novice, but have never setup a Linux software raid system, and have not played with a CentOS 7 install yet. I have been searching the web and forums for information and am not finding much for good guidance. Lots of gotcha's are popping up identifying issues related to CentOS 7, software raid 1, grub install, > 2 TB disks (or any combination of these factors). The CentOS Wiki has a good description of installing CentOS 5 with raid 1, but there is a big warning about being an unsupported (risky) approach. Hi all, I'm testing new "minimal" kickstarts files for CentOS6 and CentOS7. The CentOS6 kickstart works fine, but i've a dependency problem with the CentOS7 equivalent. In my kickstarts, i use network install with following repos/packages (for the repo, the only change is version number 6 <-> 7): url --url="http://mirror.in2p3.fr/ftp/linux/CentOS/7/os/x86_64/" repo --name="Puppet dependencies" --baseurl=http://yum.puppetlabs.com/el/7/dependencies/x86_64/ repo --name="Puppet" --baseurl=http://yum.puppetlabs.com/el/7/products/x86_64/ [...] %package [...] # We use puppet from puppetlabs repo puppet %end [...] It works great for CentOS 6, the vm is installed with puppet, but on CentOS7 anaconda complains that there is a dependency problem: puppet-3.7.1-1.el7.noarch requires ruby-augeas puppet-3.7.1-1.el7.noarch requires ruby-shadow Puppet package is in "puppet" repo and "missing" dependencies packages are provided by the "puppet dependencies" repo. The inter-repo dependencies are correctly resolved in CentOS 6 anaconda but it seems that CentOS 7 anaconda fails to resolve inter-repo dependencies. I expected to have the same behavior as CentOS 6 anaconda installer. Someone else hit this problem ? Have a nice day. Regards. Baptiste.

FWIW, I've been running ZoL Raid-z3 on two large file servers for quite some time (0.6.2-1 currently, on CentOS-6 x64) with zero problems other than a couple of disk drive failures which ZFS handled nicely. I've had no real reason to upgrade and will wait for a 1.x release before doing anything major. Performance has been very good (although the application is not all that demanding) and stability has been excellent. Over the past year or so the routine twice-weekly scrubs have found no issues, and we've detected no file corruption. The scrubbing operation doesn't seem to affect concurrent use all that much. The servers run for months without reboots (only done for security updates). I don't miss those hours-long ext4 fsck's at all :-) Chuck

> Maybe you can tune ZFS further, but I tried it in userspace (with FUSE) and reading was a almost 5 times slower than MDADM. That alone is meaningless. MDADM with which filesystem? Zfsonlinux does not work in user space, it is a kernel module. Just try it.

nouveau crash on centos 6.5

Hi, I am running 64 bit CentOS 6.5, and have an intermittent problem where the desktop crashes with the following error nouveau E[Xorg 6062]] failed to idle channel 0xccc0000 The only route I have out of it is to power down then restart. It is intermittent, where some days it does not happen, to 2-3 times per day. Have others had this experience and is there a solution? Thanks in advance for any help Best wishes Jan
