brother printers VS systemd

I've used Brothers printer driver installer tool to install drivers on C7 for a DCP7650DN. Cups thinks printing is working fine, but nothing ever arrives at the printer: the printer remains asleep. Looking at some of the setup instructions for the brother driver, it looks as if it wants a symbolic link of /etc/init.d/cups to /etc/init.d/lpd. neither of those exists in a systemd system, so I'm at somewhat of a loss regarding what to do. Or, maybe there's some other problem entirely that I haven't yet stumbled upon. Suggestions welcome. Thanks in advance! An R rpm question

I've had a request to downgrade R on one server, to match three others (someone who's just left had important scripts, and I assume they break going a full subrelease...). The server they want downgraded is running 4.1.0-5; the others are running 3.0.1-1. ALL are CentOS 6.5, yet yum downgrade tells me "only upgrade available", and yum list R-core-3.0.2\* gives me "no matching packages". Anyone know what's wrong here? mark

Centos 6.5 installer failure w/Adaptec 2400A RAID 10

I have Centos 5.10 that I decided to upgrade to 6.5 via DVD iso. Installer worked fine - up to point where it was looking for disks to install the image on. Could not find a workaround to get it to install. Obviously, prior instances of Centos worked just fine in this regard. I then tried a DVD iso image of Linux Mint 17. Installed just fine w/LVM working flawlessly. Can anyone point me to any resources where I could find a workaround to this problem? I've looked without success. Thanks. ENW

Verbose readout

Hello, This is my first post to this mailing list. I have disks set up: disk 1: windows 8.1 pro (entire disk) disk 2: openSUSE 13.1 - 1 partition, storage on partition 2 disk 3: Fedora 20 - 1 partition, storage on partition 2 disk 4: CentOS 7 (entire disk) My grub2 screen is located on disk 2 and has openSUSE logo and screen. All operating systems start from this grub screen just fine. When I choose to start CentOS 7 from the grub screen I am sent to disk 4 with no problem and the operating system begins to load. When CentOS 7 begins to load it loads in verbose. I get a very detailed showing of everything that is happening while the system is loading (this is what I might call init 3). Then it brings me to the login screen with the user and password prompt (this is in what I might call init 5). I insert the user's password and I am brought to the desktop. There are no errors in loading the operating system. When each of the other systems are loaded there is always a system splash screen hiding the verbose readout until I arrive at the login screen. I want to know how I can bring back the splash screen on CentOS 7 to hide the verbose readout. I believe each operating system has a bootloader on their respective disks. Any help is appreciated. (OT) Where can I find a PERC Simulator?

Hello and apologies for being off-topic, but this is my last option! I've been looking for a PERC simulator to help with training, but for the life of me, I cannot find it anywhere on the internet! I even called Dell to see if they can offer me a download link to no avail. I know there is one somewhere as I've seen screenshots of it *[0]*! Hi Alexander, Thank for replying me! I tried follow your ideas. My if-down script was not working. However i find out this issue regrading xl2tpd. In/Makefile/ of xl2tpd source code v 1.3.6 : "/-DTRUST_PPPD_TO_DIE // // ...// // # The cost of not trusting pppd to die (and shoot it down hard), is that your// // # pppd's //*ip-down scripts*//will not have a chance to run/." So i just enable /-DTRUST_PPPD_TO_DIE /and rebuild xl2tpd. The problem solved. My if-down script 's working well now! Greetings ! Nam.

Runing multiple daemons with systemctl

Hi all, I am doing some tests with a CentOS7 vm image before to enter in our production environment. I need to migrate some sysvinit scripts to systemctl. In all of them I need to launch some daemons in the same init script. For example: a) start daemon1 b) if daemon1 returns no startup errors, launch daemon2 c) if daemon1 returns any startup error, doesn't start daemon2 and exit. Is it possible to do this with systemctl?? Thanks.

mairadb doesn't prompt for user/pass

Hello, I discovered today that CentOS 7 has replaced MySQL with MariaDB. Which is fine, it's seems really similar. And I was already aware that it was written by the original team that wrote mysql. It's cool that the mysql command still gets you in! This is the version I have: [root@web1:~] #mysql --version mysql Ver 15.1 Distrib 5.5.37-MariaDB, for Linux (x86_64) using readline 5.1 But for some reason all I have to do is type the word 'mysql' to get me into the database. That's ok for initial setup I guess. But once I was in a did away with all the accounts that either had blank set for the username, and updated all the accounts to use passwords. Also I find that for the root accounts I can't seem to login even if I set the password in the database without encryption and copy/paste the password into the prompt. However the non-root account (admin) does let you in with the password. So I'm wondering how to secure mariadb so that it doesnt' let you in without typing in a username and password and also why it doesn't let you log in as 'root'? Cannot Static Routes

why does centos 7 want to install mariadb instead of mysql ?

Hey all, I just got around to trying out CentOS 7. And for some reason when I attempt to install mysql-server, instead I'm offered mariadb? I'm using epel and remi as my repos. update repo problem?

I'm trying to install the build dependencies for an SRPM using yum-builddep, and it's telling me that it can't get the repo sqlite file for updates-source from vault. Any ideas? Something wrong with my repo configuration? The only thing I've done that should have touched the repo configuration is installing epel-release-7-1.noarch. Thanks! Install Centos 6 x86_64 on Dell PowerEdge 2970 and a SSD (hardware probing issues)

I have a fleet of 2970s and we are upgrading the hardrives on the motherboard SATA ports (A/B not the PERC backplane) when a "detecting hardware" is performed the system crashes, reboots and gives an E1422 error code (useless video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PhyMeUHJar4) We narrowed it down to a motherboard BIOS issue, if we remove the SSD or add noprobe to the kernel the installer does not crash. But when specifing "noprobe" it does not appear to have the loopback driver (and likely many more). ERROR: failed to mount loopback device /dev/loop0 on /mnt/runtime as /tmp/install.img: (null) INFO: mounting stage2 failed Next steps, I already lost my vacation to this, I hope to keep my sanity: Load drivers from kernel boot line? Blacklist drivers on the kernel boot line? Serial cable logging of boot? Hi there, I'm playing with CentOS 7 (don't know if it's recommended at all have this one as a development server as maybe is not stable enough yet) and I installed it on a Vmware VM with two network interfaces: one as a bridged connected directly to the physical network and replicating the network state and the second one as a host only interface (the one I use to manage the VM) so after I got the CentOS installed I can see the first interface but not the second one and I don't know how to enable it. bind zone files graphical management tool

On a server that does not have a gui, only command line. In the past I have used webmin, and was happy with it, but it is more than I really need. I COULD rsync the files to my notebook and maintain them there. Probably should just for backup! But is there anything else that is 'safe' to use. vi gets tiring after a while.

I've already found the ticket above before I've posted here. I tried to fix it with the change of /usr/lib/systemd/system/systemd-user-sessions.service or /usr/lib/systemd/system/sshd.service with dependencies to systemd-networkd.service and network.target but it changes nothing (obvious) in the behaviour. Inconsistent printing on Centos 7

I have ongoing issues with my Xerox Phaser 2550 printer under Centos 7. It always worked without any issues on Centos 6 before I upgraded to Centos 7. The problem manifests itself by regularly (but not every time) printing page after page of garbage instead of the document that I wanted to print out. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. The same document might print fine now but then I get pages of garbage the next time I print. I have it set up as a shared printer on my network; the other computers on my network are all Centos 6. Printing from another computer on my network sometimes works but more often prints pages of garbage. When experimenting with this last night printing test pages from system-config-printer on a Centos 6 machine to the printer on this Centos 7 machine, I sometimes got a "Connecting to printer" message and then nothing printed until I restarted cups on the Centos 6 computer. This didn't happen every time; once again sometimes I got a test page printed, sometimes I got pages of garbage, sometimes I got the "connecting to printer" message and had to restart cups on the Centos 6 computer. Having become tired of this, I disconnected the printer from my Centos 7 machine and connected it to one of the Centos 6 machines and it worked without error when printing from that computer directly and when printing to it from another Centos 6 machine. The printer also showed up by magic as a discovered printer on the other Centos 6 machine, but didn't show up on the Centos 7 machine until I loaded system-config-printer on Centos 7, "new", and told it to search for network printers on the Centos 6 machine. Therefore, automatic printer discovery doesn't seem to work on this Centos 7 machine either. Now that the printer is connected to a Centos 6 machine again it appears to work fine when talking to other Centos 6 machines on the network and the printer is automatically discovered. After searching for the network printer from the Centos 7 machine and setting it up using the default (just hitting ok after it found the printer), my first attempt at printing a test page gave me a sheet that says this: #PDF-BANNER Template default-testpage.pdf Show printer-name printer-info printer-location printer-make-and-model printer-d river-name printer-driver-version paper-size imageable-area job-id options time- at-creation time-at-processing This obviously wasn't what I expected to see, so I ran system-config-printer on the Centos 7 machine again and changed the printer driver for that printer to Xerox Phaser 3150, the same as the setting on the Centos 6 machine that the printer is now connected to. Now the test page prints fine, but I get two sheets out of the printer every time I print the test page. The first one says "**** Warning: glyf overlaps cmap, truncating." Then the test page prints as expected. After printing the test page I get a printer error icon (printer with a red dot and white line on it) in the notification area on my panel. Clicking on that icon does nothing and hovering over it does nothing either but the only way it goes away is if I log out and log back in. In conclusion, the printing really doesn't work properly from this Centos 7 machine, regardless of whether the printer is directly connected or if I'm printing over the network. Direct connecting the printer causes it to print pages of garbage some of the time, automatic remote printer discovery doesn't work, and manually setting up up to print to the remote printer still generates an error of some kind but does appear to print. I can find nothing in /var/log/cups that tells me anything useful. /var/log/cups/error_log isn't updated when I print to the remote printer, even though the printer error icon shows up on my panel. page_log just tells me that it printed a page. All of this stuff works perfectly and automatically from Centos 6 (both printing to the local printer on a Centos 6 machine and printing over the network from a Centos 6 machine to another Centos 6 machine). -- MELVILLE THEATRE ~ Real D 3D Digital Cinema ~ www.melvilletheatre.com

It has nothing to do with logrotate. I want virsh to tell logwatch what the status is of all virtual machines running on the host. Logwatch will then include that in its daily summary report. Hi all, On a C6 box, when I want to enable LDAP authentication, I issue: # yum -y install nss-pam-ldapd pam_ldap nscd # authconfig --enableldap --enableldapauth --enablemkhomedir \ --ldapserver=ldap://ldap-blabla/ \ --ldapbasedn="blabla" \ --enablecache --disablefingerprint \ --kickstart --update All is working fine, the directory structure is fine and compliant. What about C7? As far as I read, - there is a switch to "sssd" - I found 1 link: http://www.certdepot.net/ldap-client-configuration-authconfig/ Is there something in particular I should pay attention for? Note that I have only GUI-less servers. Thank you.

Random Disk I/O Tests

I have two openvz servers running Centos 6.x both with 32GB of RAM. One is an Intel Xeon E3-1230 quad core with two 4TB 7200 SATA drives in software RAID1. The other is an old HP DL380 dual quad core with 8 750GB 2.5" SATA drives in hardware RAID6. I want to figure out which one has better random I/O performance to host a busy container. The DL380 currently has one failed drive in the RAID6 array until I get down to replace it, will that degrade performance? Is there an easy way to test disk I/O? On a plain Gigabyte file copy the software RAID1 box seems to be twice as fast.

Dual boot with Windows 8.1, UEFI

(apologies for the length - there are questions at the end...) I've been running Linux for 20 years, and done a lot of dual-boots. I know that's old-school now, but I run Linux 95% of the time yet don't want to lose a Windows system I've paid for - but I've never tried removing it from a system and reinstalling the same licenced copy inside a virtual machine. I bought a new laptop back in April this year, after trying to check online for Linux certification to match what was in the local stores. There's so many models and variants that's almost impossible, but I found various "HP Pavilion 14" in www.ubuntu.com/certification and a couple of "HP EliteBook" in hardware.redhat.com/laptop. So I bought an "HP Pavilion 14-n228ca TouchSmart Notebook", which came with Windows 8.1 installed. So I start off doing what I've done on previous occasions - get into the BIOS, change the boot order, boot a CentOS 6 installation CD as used on my desktop, go into rescue mode and look at the partitions. Normally I'd use fdisk, but that says it doesn't understand GPT and I should use parted. There's 5 partitions, so I use resizefs to shrink the main NTFS data partition, then delete the partition and recreate it shorter at the same start location. Then reboot the CD into install mode, create a Linux partition in the free space, and install CentOS, which adds a choice of "Other" in grub.conf to boot Windows. Then I boot CentOS and finish the install - a couple of glitches; it needs a kernel parameter "iommu=soft" to get the USB mouse to work ("nommu_map_single overflow" messages), and it needs a firmware file rt3290.bin for the RT3290 WiFi chip to work (submitted bug 1133288). Then I try to boot into Windows. From GRUB, I get a screen "windows boot manager" with an error message "file \Boot\BCD - missing or contains errors". The boot sequence is a bit weird compared to what I'm used to - this is my first machine with UEFI. The BIOS has a UEFI boot order and a legacy boot order, which has to be enabled. UEFI takes precedence. With legacy enabled, F9 gives a boot menu with OS boot Manager Boot from EFI file Notebook hard drive Internal CD/DVD ROM Drive "Notebook hard drive" takes me to GRUB. "EFI file" takes me walkabout on a Windows file system with folders like "HP", "Boot", Windows" and what looks like hundreds of locale files - maybe I can boot in Turkish. "OS boot Manager" takes me to an HP/Windows system recovery screen with various options - continue, troubleshoot, turn off. "continue" goes to a splash screen like "attempting to repair" which fails. "troubleshoot" has a command prompt option. That's running Windows cmd.exe in one of the other partitions, mounted as X: In that, I find commands "chkdsk", "diskpart", "bootrec", "bcdedit" etc. To cut an even longer story short, I did something like: X:\ diskpart diskpart> select disk 0 diskpart> select partition 4 (the NTFS system one) diskpart> set id=ebd0a0a2-b9e5-4433-87c0-68b6b72699c7 X:\ bcdedit /set {default} device partition=C: X:\ bcdedit /set {default} osdevice partition=C: X:\ bootrec /rebuildbcd After doing that, the system partition appears as C:, passes chkdsk, and the system boots successfully into Windows. 3 questions: - what should I have done instead to create a dual-boot system on this hardware (the above is ridiculous and took hours of trials and research) - how can I make CentOS boot by default (since there is a valid EFI record for Windows 8, that seems to take preference unless I hit F9 at boot and manually select the disk) - is it possible to make CentOS boot via EFI rather than from the legacy partition boot record ? - how can I make Windows boot from GRUB ? Any ideas why? Is it a bug? On the original system was the swap not disabled, but replaced with an encrypted swap (one added line in crypttab, one line changed in fstab). And when the next kernel update came, the server have become unusable as I described in my first post.

USB Boot

I noticed that the Supermicro X9SCL has a USB type-a port right on the motherboard. http://www.supermicro.com/products/motherboard/Xeon/C202_C204/X9SCL.cfm Has anyone used a port like this to boot the core OS and used the physical drives for OpenVZ and KVM containers? I figure a 64GB thumb drive would work. Anyone done this or will a USB thumb drive not stand up too the load? Seems much easier then using a SATA SSD drive but I imagine you still have to find a more durable USB drive.

I want to take the oldhd.img output from ddrescue and load it to satrt performing recovery (LVM, then filesystem) but I want to do a copy on write with that. Dear all, I would like to know how I could run my dongle wifi TP-Link (Ref: TL-WDN4200, version 1) under Centos 6.5 (Final). Should I create by myself the corresponding driver or does exist another way? When I ran lsusb I got: Ralink Technology RT3573 Wireless Adapter Thanks for your help. Regards, Eric

OT: Linksys router misbehaviour

I'm running a Linksys WRT54GL router from my CentOS-7 home server. Every now and then (maybe once every 2 days) the router's WiFi cuts out, and I've found no way to solve this except to disconnect the power from the router, wait 10 seconds and then re-connect. This always works. The router is running under dd-wrt. My question is - which makes it a tiny bit CentOS-related - does anyone with such a router know of a way to wake the router up in such a case through the computer? I wouldn't have dared to ask this question here or anywhere until recently, as I assumed my ancient Linksys routers were obsolete. But I've been reading posts recently saying that there hasn't really been a Linux router to replace the WRT54GL, and in particular Linksys's recent 11n replacement is not as good as the old model in many ways. Anyway, if anyone has an answer to my query I should be very grateful. I have a couple of IP cameras working by WiFi on the computer, which I can look at remotely. I've connected one by TP-Link through the router, and this doesn't cut out, but it is not wholly satisfactory.
