sshd_config AllowUsers syntax wrong in documentation

It seems the syntax for AllowUsers in sshd_config is not the same that is given in man sshd_config and in several documentation on the web. (http://www.openssh.com/cgi-bin/man.cgi?query=sshd_config) e.g. AllowUsers root does work. AllowUsers root username does not work. If I try to login as root I get "User root from <hostname> not allowed because not listed in AllowUsers". I tried separating by comma (just in case) which fails as well. man page mentions checking against hosts only if you use a root@hostname pattern there. AllowUser root@* username works for me (with root, didin't check the username), but this should not be necessary according to documentation. If "root" is allowed as a "pattern" it doesn't matter if there are more "patterns" coming or not. It seems that as soon as two names are listed it's read as one user ("root username"), e.g. it does not use the whitespace as a terminator. UsePAM=no , in case that makes a difference. CentOS 5.9, standard OpenSSH. I've noticed this discrepancy already in the past, but didn't investigate. I also think that this syntax contradicts what man ssh_config says about pattern lists, because for pattern-lists (which I understand is a list of patterns for one directive) ssh wants a comma-separated list. http://www.openssh.com/cgi-bin/man.cgi?query=ssh_config (man sshd_config says to look in ssh_config for pattern syntax.) I think this is a serious bug as it can lock you out very quickly while you want to secure your machine (once you want to have more than one user). Do you share the same opinion or am I doing something wrong and it works like advertised? Kai

How to remove LVM Physical Volume from Volume Group?

Hi. I have a volume group (let's say) vg_data. It consists from /dev/sdd5 sdd6 sdd7 I added sdc5 Now I want to remove (free) sdd7 and you is to for RAID partition. What are the commands (ordered) I need to perform? grubby fatal error: unable to find a suitable template

I did a bulk "yum update -y" of several servers. As a sanity check after the upgrade, I ran a grep of /etc/grub.conf across all updated servers looking to ensure the kernel I expected was installed. Two servers came up saying /etc/grub.conf did not exist! I logged into the servers, and /etc/grub.conf was a broken link. (It points to /boot/grub/grub.conf). My systems are all setup with a dedicated /boot partition. Sure enough, /boot was not mounted. Furthermore, I saw no /boot entry in /etc/fstab (which all my other servers contain). So I mounted /boot, and the the grub.conf file was not consistent: it did not have a stanza for the kernel I wanted installed. So I did a "yum remove kernel ; yum install -y kernel". Both the remove and the install resulted in this message getting printed: grubby fatal error: unable to find a suitable template Just for kicks, I renamed both the /etc/grub.conf symlink as well as the actual /boot/grub/grub.conf file, and repeated the kernel remove/install. This did NOT produce the above error; however, no symlink or actual grub.conf file was created. I did a little web searching on the above error, and one common cause is that there is no valid "title..." stanza in the grub.conf file for grubby to use as a template. But my file does in fact contain a valid stanza. I even copied a valid grub.conf file from another server, and re-ran the kernel remove/install: same error. Clearly, something is broken, but I'm not sure what. Anyone seen anything like this? By the way, these machines were all 5.something, being upgraded to 5.7. Thanks!

firefox keeps downloading .iso files

Whenever I start firfox, it tries to download two .iso files into Desktop. Until recently, I wouldn't notice until it announced that it had run out of room. At that point I would click on the messages to make them go away. In the mean time, it had been chewing up bandwidth. One file, I had tried to download by mistake. Don't remmeber what I did with it on purpose. The other I downloaded into a partition with more room. I found this: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/926609 I did not like the side-effects. For now, I've stopped the downloads by replacing the target files with empty unreadable files. Now I get an error message right away and it does not chew up my bandwidth. I'd lke a better solution. Any ideas? so, I installed a c6 system offsite today, had to do it in a hurry. box has 2 disks meant to be mirrored... I couldn't figure out how to get anaconda to build a LVM root on a mirror, so I ended up just installing a /boot and vg_system on sda and raid it later. every howto I find for linux says to half-raid the OTHER disk, COPY everything to it, then boot from it and wipe the first disk and then bond it as a mirror of the 2nd. Thats kind of ugly. in solaris, you can tell it that your existing partition is half of a mirror, update /etc/vfstab, then reboot, and then join a mirror to it. this seems much cleaner to me than copying everything. I tried to do this the solaris way, and at the first step, am told... # mdadm --create /dev/md0 --level=mirror --raid-devices=2 /dev/sda2 missing mdadm: cannot open /dev/sda2: Device or resource busy /dev/sda2 contains the LVM root vg... so... I'm thinking I''ll boot a rescue system from usb, create the half mirror, then reboot to the incomplete raid and add mirror /dev/sdb2 will the VG be found on /dev/md0 instead of on /dev/sda2 ? if so, is there any other reason this won't work? -- john r pierce 37N 122W somewhere on the middle of the left coast

I've built a new mail system with Centos 6.5, and I'm running fetchmail - sendmail - procmail to maildir. I have all of this working at the moment.(I know, postfix was the default, but for lots of other reasons, I switched, and that isn't an issue, I don't think). I am using dovecot as an imap server. Procmail won't update indexes during email delivery, so I'm having some performance delays and lags when accessing the emails via imap. I would like to use dovecot-lda for delivery, but I get permission denied errors, and I don't know why or where they are coming from. Hello CentOS admins. I am an AIX admin bent on learning CentOS. Yesterday I downloaded CentOS-6.5-x86_64-bin-DVD1.iso, burned a DVD and loaded it onto a Lenovo IdeaPad N585 laptop. All went well, except for getting the integrated wireless to work. ATI Rage XL Driver for Centos 6.5

I have just installed Centos 6.5 on a Asus motherboard with an embedded ATI Rage XL controller (and with no room to install a more capable graphics card) and it is infuriatingly slow, running in VESA mode. Unfortunately this card is not supported "out-of-the-box" by centos 6.5 and after Googling I have not found that the kmod-fglrx-legacy driver from elrepo would work either according to its info page. Does anyone have experience with this (dated) card? Thank you. Hakan

My practice is to place general rules that I wish to apply to all packets, regardless of source or destination, into a chain called GENERAL and simply call that chain as the last instruction in each of the default chains. Actually I put very little else in the default chains and route from the GENERAL chain to other chains dedicated to specific rule sets, like for port knocking (FWKNOP_ALLOW); or for assured access (ALWAYS_ALLOW); or for blacklists: ALWAYS_DENY and FAIL2BAN_DENY for example. -- *** E-Mail is NOT a SECURE channel *** James B. The issue is that every time I open an email with some "+" somewhere in the source (which I didn't traced yet) I get annoying message: An error occurred while loading or saving configuration information for thunderbird. problem with centos.org whois

It looks like someone pooched a domain transfer, and the whois entry for centos.org is missing its NS records. I've sent an email to the whois tech contact @redhat, but I'm sending this to the list to hopefully bring it to someone else's attention, as well. Hopefully it gets gets out before my mailserver expires its DNS cache for centos.org. Expect centos.org to be offline for a bit ... All works good. I suppose that this behaviour is colocation constraint related (correct me if I'm wrong). In my case I've: drbd1_fs with libvirt_res libvirt_res with libvirt_guest_res drbd1_fs with pgsql There is a way to avoid that if libvirt_guest_res fails, drbd1_fs will not be stopped and then all other resources depending from drbd1_fs? Another question is about fencing. I've ridden that a cluster must have fencing to be considered as such. On CentOS 6.5 there is stonith that concerns node level fencing. For this type of fencing I must have ilo, ilom, drac, and other. It's possible to have fencing without Light-out devices, blade power control device and other? There are other device that can be used for fencing? Supposing a 2 node cluster with two server assembled (no hp, dell, sun, ibm..) how I can implement fencing with stonith? They seem to be rolling through a block of ip addresses as the source to defeat this kind of screening, so I've set some ip addresses to be blocked in iptables. I've recently built a new mail server with centos6.5, and decided to bite the bullet and leave SELinux running. I've stumbled through making things work and am mostly there. I've got my own spam and ham corpus as mbox files in /home/user/Mail/learned. These files came from my backup of the centos 5 server this machine is replacing. Odd issue: power_saving

On a running system, I was just logging in, and it took for-bloody-ever. I run top, and ok, a load of 5 still shouldn't do that; we have folks that do put real loads on these systems. But top shows me power_saving frequently coming to the top, with a 94% - 100% CPU usage, and there's two threads of power_saving. Add to this that I don't *ever* remember seeing such a kernel thread. So, can I kill either or both threads? Googling some, I see someone suggesting: acpi_pad.disable=1 already added in grub.conf ;-) (after having `modprobe -r acpi_pad`, which solves directly the load issue) Good idea or not? mark

dumb developer explodes yum

hey guys, One of our developers DESTROYED both yum and rpm on one of the development machines with an rm command. And guess who's lucky enough to get to fix this mess? *raises hand* So I hope y'all don't mind me turning to you once again for some advice. You've been wonderful in the past. Pavlov's dogs as they say. At any rate, I've managed to fix rpm (yay) by copying it over from another machine of similar architecture and os. I'm not sure if the fix is perfect, but I can indeed install rpm's again with that command. Yum however is proving to be more of a challenge. And I am in the midst of some dependencies currently. I found this guide on the net which seemed reasonable and that I could adapt to my needs. http://deadlockprocess.wordpress.com/2010/07/18/how-to-reinstall-rpm-and-yu… However installing this rpm : rpm-libs-4.4.2-37.el5.i386.rpm Asks for a bunch of libraries. Hardware watchdog timer, no IPMI, no /dev/watchdog

Hi all, I've got a Portwell NANO-6060 board I am testing out for potential use in a project of ours. One of the nice features of this board, beyond nice NICs, is that it has a hardware watchdog timer. The problem is that I don't get a /dev/watchdog device file. I know the hardware works, because when I enable it in BIOS, the box will reboot after the timer expires. However, without the /dev/watchdog device, I don't have a way to kick it. In dmesg, I see: NMI watchdog enabled, takes one hw-pmu counter. So it *looks* like it's there. Also, I installed the 'watchdog' package (but not the IPMI package) and the watchdog service is running. Any tips? procmail and dovecot

Does anyone know how to get procmail and dovecot to play happily together with mboxes? I'm on Centos 6.5, fully patched. I'm getting tons of lock timeouts which is killing performance. I tried using dovecot's lda from procmail, which prompted many adjustments to selinux, which I managed, but it still gives permission problems, and I haven't succeeded in getting it to deliver mail. Just wondering if you had the chance of testing the network speed with iperf from host to host yet? This is like the first thing to do while doing a full debug upside-down. No matter what disks you have but note that each and one of them has a maximum IOps limit which sometimes you can hit in a way. as already suggested by others in the past you can use a binary search dividing the issue one part at a time network.. disk.. controller.. driver.. software(since the software is proven to work). squid proxy, https and apple store

Hi, I'm a bit confused regarding the connection of a Mac OS X system to the app store by the app store client. Squid is configured using ncsa_auth and I can access https and http websites without a problem. But the app store app is not logging in. I do get ==> /var/log/squid/cache.log <== 2014/06/11 13:23:10| The request CONNECT p12-buy.itunes.apple.com:443 is DENIED, because it matched 'ncsa_users' 2014/06/11 13:23:10| The reply for CONNECT p12-buy.itunes.apple.com:443 is ALLOWED, because it matched 'ncsa_users' 2014/06/11 13:23:10| The request CONNECT p12-buy.itunes.apple.com:443 is ALLOWED, because it matched 'CONNECT' in my squid logfile. yum install to a portable location

I have googled, read the man page, and such. What I am trying to do is install applications to a NFS mounted drive, where the libraries and everything are locally installed on that filesystem so that it is portable across servers (I have over 100 servers which each need specific applications installed via yum and we do not want to install 100 copies). We tried the yum relocate and it was not available on Centos6.4 and yum --nogpgcheck localinstall R-3.1.0-5.el6.x86_64 I want the binaries and all dependencies in the application filesystem which is remote mounted on all servers. Google chrome vs network settings proxy?

I started using chrome on the RHEL7 beta after some firefox hangs - but maybe this behavior is generic. I have the system 'network settings/network proxy' set to use squid on another host for connections out of the private range we use. This proxy requires authentication so I can always tell the first time a browser uses it. However, I can start a chrome connection to gmail and it just goes direct (which happens to work, I just prefer the proxy which will use a different outbound route). If I go to any non-google site, it uses the proxy and will pop up the expected authentication dialog on the first connection. Does anyone know (a) why it bypasses the proxy when going to a google site, (b) why it doesn't have its own internal proxy settings, or (c) how to fix it? -- Les Mikesell lesmikesell(a)gmail.com

umask setting in /etc/profile not working

Hey all, We have the following set in /etc/profile : umask 0002 so that it will affect all users. That should create all files as 664 and all directories as 775 if I'm not mistaken. Well I logged into the machine after this was set and just created a file as one of the users who complained about permissions settings on files. And this is what I saw: [user1@qa_host ~]$ ls -l test_qa -rw-r--r-- 1 user1 domain^users 0 Jun 11 10:08 test_qa I even tried logging out and logging in again just to be sure. I still got the same result. So my question is why would the file not have the permissions specified by the umask command in /etc/profile ? I really need this to work for the users.
