issue_discards in lvm.conf

I decided that the next time I reformatted my main desktop computer (this one) I would have a ssd installed in it to use for the boot drive. Now that Centos 7 is on the horizon, I'm thinking that the time is approaching when I'll want to do that. The last time I set up a computer with a ssd in it, that was the only drive that it had. I changed issue_discards=0 to issue_discards=1 into the /etc/lvm/lvm.conf file, set up cron to run fstrim on that drive on a weekly basis, and that was it. Since this next setup will have both a ssd and a regular hard drive in it, is there some way that I should specify that issue_discards=1 applies only to the ssd or does that matter? I see that the explanation in the lvm.conf file says "If set to 1, discards will only be issued if both the storage and kernel provide support." so I'm left with the impression that the issue_discards setting won't affect a regular hard drive even if it is set to 1. -- MELVILLE THEATRE ~ Real D 3D Digital Cinema ~ www.melvilletheatre.com

USB blues

I have a freshly built, updated EL6 system and am having problems with USB stability - at boot everything works fine but within a few hours, USB devices start disappearing randomly. At first I though the USB devices were suspect, but removing the suspect devices and an accessory PCIE USB card hasn't changed anything. As of now, a single USB device is working. (which is lucky, it hosts the OS) I've rebooted the server several times trying to diagnose the problem. After a reboot, everything works great - for a while. Is this a driver issue or just a bum motherboard/chipset? The system is built based on the SUPERMICRO MBD-X9SCM-F-O available here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813182253 According to the OS compatibility matrix, the most recent CentOS 6.5 is supported: http://www.supermicro.com/support/resources/OS/C204.cfm and all yum updates have been applied. Devices read/wrote fine. ata9.00 HD errors are known, it's the old ATA O/S drive. I want to copy a few user accounts to a new system... is there a more elegant way to copy /etc/shadow passwords other than editing the file? for instance, is there some way I can give the password hash to /usr/bin/passwd ? -- john r pierce 37N 122W somewhere on the middle of the left coast

XFS project quota and samba

Hi, I managed to configure project quotas on a xfs device on a centos 6.5 server. (just pquota in fstab, no grquota, rebooted server....) Reporting the quota settings and usage looks good. But mounting a smb-share with the proect quota enabled on my os x client shows much less space used (3GB) and 0% free. Currently 650 GB are used, the quota limit is set to 1TB. My user I'm mounting the smb-share has no quota limits set. The users are in ldap. Any suggestions or hints what might be wrong? Thanks and best regards . LDAP login problem for CentOS 6.5

Hi, We are experiencing a problem to use LDAP user accounts to login into a CentOS system. A fresh 6.5 system was installed recently to become a central server. Both OpenLDAP and 389 Directory Server were installed and configured (not at the same time) with groups and normal user accounts. The server was configured to use LDAP authentication (through authconfig and system-config-authentication). First, the LDAP user wasn't identified by running the 'id' command. The same with SSH. Although ldapsearch listed all objects correctly. Observing /var/log/secure had shown that the user is not identified at all (no uid etc.). Following another article, POSIX details (uid + gid, and set gid to some LDAP group) were set for that user and the 'id' command was successful. However, still, SSH connections are refused and the log states: "Authentication service cannot retrieve authentication info" (for pam_sss). The secure log shows that user details are unavailable (uid=0,gid=0...) to sshd. Locally, when a root performs "su user", the login is successful, home is created and the secure log state authentication is performed by pam_unix, contrast to pam_sss. Need to mention that we've tried to follow most of the literature online (RedHat directory server, CentOS OpenLDAP client setup and many other resources). None were found to be complete enough to bring a system to a working state where users are able to login and authenticate. In addition, system-config-authentication requires the use of LDAPS or LDAP with TLS. Only command line tools are able to configure simple LDAP (no TLS or SSL). However, even being a security measure, we'd like to avoid all the (serious) burden of working with certificates at first for simple experimentation. Any comment or insight will be helpful. In addition, any link to where we can find a step-by-step guide to install an (working) LDAP server with a client, will be more than appreciated. Many thanks, Moti.

How to configure user accounts without NIS

The company where I work is mostly a Windows shop, but I run a few CentOS servers and desktops. I have configured my systems as follows with Kickstart: authconfig --enablemd5 --passalgo=sha512 --enablenis --nisdomain=XXX \ --nisserver=nis1.XXX.com,nis2.XXX.com --useshadow --enablekrb5 \ --krb5realm=XXX.COM --krb5kdc=ldap.XXX.com --krb5adminserver=ldap.XXX.com The /etc/nsswitch.conf file looks like this: passwd: files nis shadow: files nis group: files nis The NIS services are provided by the Windows Domain controllers using Windows Unix Services (or something similarly named). This allows anyone that’s in the NIS database to log into any CentOS system with their Windows username and password. Home directories are automounted from a big NAS box (and are also available on Windows). This all works great most of the time. However, if the network or the NIS server goes down, the CentOS system just hangs. For CentOS 7 I'd like to make the systems more robust to network failures. I could create local accounts (I believe there is a way to autocreate an account and a home directory upon login), but I'm not sure how to go about it. This also implies that the home directories will not be shared among the systems, so ssh keys will have to be manually copied to the local home directories. Ideally, I'd like to get rid of NIS altogether and use LDAP and Kerberos for everything, but I don't know if that is feasible. I think these are the only services that we currently rely on NIS for: - passwd file - group file - automount maps (including auto.home for home directories) Before I go re-inventing the wheel, I'd like to find out how others manage multiple users on multiple systems using a central service. And in case it wasn’t obvious, I want to use the same usernames and passwords that are used in the Windows environment. Thanks, Alfred

apache server-status permission denied

Hey all, I'm having a slightly weird issue with apache server-status on just one of my nodes. I did get your message and I simply have not had time to test its implementation as it necessarily involves a restart of the test system. I am trying to discover if there is some way of restarting a headless server and use a specific grub entry instead of the default. I want to leave the default unchanged until I can prove that any manual changes I make do not negatively impact a system restart. Suggestiong for a tablet computer to run Centos-6/7?

I have an iPad Air. Nice kit and good battery life but experience has shown the iPad is just a little too opaque and network dependent for my taste. I was wondering if there existed a similarly sized/robust tablet that can run CentOS-6/7 that anyone would recommend? I am looking from something that I can take on international trips that I can scrub on a regular basis. But, I also desire the software that I am familiar with (CentOS, SSH, Open/Libre-Office, Inkscape, Tor Browser, Jitsi, etc.). I do not really need a GarageBand/iTunes replacement. But I do want a USB connection and the ability to run stock CentOS, not some specialised fork thereof. I did the Google thing but that has not provided me any clear recommendations. Ubuntu seems to be the most popular distribution for these things and I am reluctant to invest the time to learn the idiosyncrasies of yet another Linux distribution. Hi, Can we upgrade the OpenSSL version on earlier CentOS Versions 6.2/6.3/6.4 with the latest Openssl version which has all the latest openssl vulnerability fixes from Cent OS repo. Will there be any dependency with the openssl version with CentOS versions upgrading openssl 1.0.0 to openssl 1.0.1e latest version. Create Virtual Machine via HTTP or FTP

Hi, I'm trying to create a Virtual Machine using Network Install mode (I tried HTTP and FTP). The HTTP/FTP server where the installation files are located is the Host Machine. The URL that I'm using is: http://192.168.1.104/inst and the Automatic detect option detects the OS without problem. When the installation starts I got an error: Unable to retrieve http://192.168.1.104/inst/images/install.img I tried different path but I always get the same error. Analyzing the MBR

Is there any tool for analysing the MBR on a computer? I know one can just dd it and see roughly what it contains. But surely one should be able to work out the exact content of the MBR and the neighbouring sectors read at boot time? I had a difficult day, probably due to my ignorance, which would have been solved at once by such a tool. I had taken one of three hard disks out of my home server (to see exactly what it was, as smartctl said it was not in its database) and this had the effect of altering the order of the disks in the BIOS, preventing re-booting. It was only after I had re-installed CentOS in a spare partition that I realized what had happened. Incidentally, before this I had tried what I take to be the standard way of solving this problem, by running a CentOS Live USB stick, mounting the root partition and trying to chroot to this, but that did not work - chroot on the stick would not run, and neither would chroot on the disk. I'm wondering if there was some other method I could have tried? For example, I tried running a Fedora netinstall USB stick, which has a "Try to repair the system" option in Troubleshooting. This saw the system OK, but did not have grub-install on it. Hi to all... After a hard search i dont found the way to install Vanitygen to make Bitcoin addres on centos. After 3 days i decide to find the way and make the how to. hey all, I'm trying to figure out how to use apache's mod_status module to figure out which of the web servers in a farm of six are processing more requests than others. I'm writing a script to grep out requests per second from the status module like this: [root@uszmpwslp014lc ~]# GET http://$(hostname -i)/server-status | grep -i requests/sec <dt>4.08 requests/sec - 80.9 kB/second - 19.8 kB/request</dt> That works ok. And next I'm grepping it back down and awking it to just the part I'm interested in: [root@uszmpwslp014lc ~]# GET http://$(hostname -i)/server-status | grep -i -e request -e requests/sec | grep -i -v -e currently -e code -e ss | awk '{print $1}' <dt>4.08 But now I need to get rid of just the <dt> in front of the 4.08? Further, I recalled I once had run into a bug with an early development version of RVM due to it overriding cd in a shell function, which is not an alias but is similar enough for most purposes. I cannot recall what that issue was but at least the memory of it put me on the right track. So I grepped for CD in ~/\.* and found an RVM related cd function in .bash_profile which did not escape $1. I changed that reference to "$1" and the problem was thereby fixed. Thanks for all the help and suggestions. I do have a few residual questions however: 1. What does the 1+ in the shell expansion ${1+"$@"} mean and do? 2. I know that $0 returns the shell name or shell script file name. How does ${0##*/} differ in effect from $0. 3. Odd kernel panic, repeatable

I had an old server die; we had another, same model, sitting around lightly used, so I did what I've done before: swap the RAID card into that, swap the drives, even putting them in the same bays as the dead one, and boot. Nope. 100% of the time, when it hits switching roots, it kernel panics. Adding rdshell to the kernel line does nothing, I get no grub rdshell. Booting from a flash drive into rescue, it finds everything, *perfectly*, and mounts it all, including the RAID data drives. I've rebuilt the initrd, and no joy. Anyone have an idea? mark

Centos box and Cisco 3750 VLAN's

Hello all, I have a CentOS box that has a NIC (eth0) on which I defined 4 VLAN's (counting the NIC itself): eth0, eth0.1, eth0.2 and eht0.3. Initially the Cisco switch was not partitioned into VLAN's which means that the only VLAN running on it was the default one (VLAN 1). I have then played with VLAN's a bit on the switch and at this point have two: VLAN 1 (which is default and can not be deleted) and VLAN 3. The CentOS box is plugged into a trunk port on VLAN 3 which by virtue of being a trunk should belong to all VLANs. However, this does not seem to work as expected. What I get is the following: 1) eht0 does not come up at all. ifup eth0 Device eth0 does not seem to be present, delaying initialization 2) eth0.3 comes up fine. 3) Other VLAN's do not come up. No error messages, just never show up. Any insight into this would be most welcome. Primarily, I fail to understand why all those VLAN's came up on VLAN 1 and why now even VLAN 1 does not come up - even though the trunk port the device is plugged into is supposed to be a member of all VLAN's. Newer version of ffmpeg for EL6?

We're trying to build a rich media website, and will need to re-encode the video content with ffmpeg. Unfortunately, the ffmpeg version that comes with the most common repos are rather out of date. As in 0.6.5 vs 2.21 being the most current version. However, ffmpeg looks to be a pretty thorny thing to compile with all the options we need. It appears that the FFMPEG with rpmfusion for Fedora is pretty current, 2.1.4. Is there a repo out there that anybody knows of that has a relatively current version of ffmpeg out for Centos 6? external esata RAID box, how to spin down drives when idle?

I've posted before about my Venus DS3R Pro2, specifically in relation to using USB3. But this a different topic about the same device. It doesn't seem to do any power-saving on its own, i.e, the drives stay spinning continuosuly, 24X7. Setting the appropriate power-save options in the screen saver or power manager screens doesn't seem to have any effect on these drives. Wondering if anyone can suggest other ways to approach this? [OT] OSX-10.9.3 cd ~'/ problem with spaces'

Apologies for this OT post. I need some help debugging a bash script. It just happens to be provided by Apple Inc. In a terminal session under OSX-10.9.3 I want do do this: cd ~/'Library/Application Support' Which is a simple enough request. However, OSX returns: cd /users/byrnejb/Library/Application: No such file or directory. The space evidently acts as a delimiter to cd even though the path is quoted. However this: ls -l ~/'Library/Application Support' returns the directory contents without error. Apparently ls is not affected. I googled this off and on for the past two days and found nothing that works for me. All advice was to simply quote the path, which I was already doing and which also did not work. I eventually fixed my problem by doing this: builtin cd ~/'Library/Application Support' It seems that OSX-10.9.3 implements 'cd' as an external script that contains the following (Note the back-ticks surrounding the echo pipe tr commands): #!/bin/sh builtin `echo ${0##*/} | tr \[:upper:] \[:lower:]` ${1+"$@"} My guess is that this is where the problem is but I cannot tell what it is. Can a bash virtuoso point out the syntax error that is causing this script to mis-parse the path argument? Custom respin ISO prompting for discs

I'm creating a custom install / respin ISO with updated packages and a kickstart - starting from CentOS 6.5 minimal install DVD. I'm generally following the directions from http://smorgasbork.com/component/content/article/35-linux/128-building-a-cu… . I can create the iso, boot, have it find the installation media (it prints "Found local installation media"), partition the disks, resolve the dependencies, and then when it gets to "Starting installation" it prompts with "Please insert CentOS disc 1 to continue". Debugging I've done so far (all but 4 result in the prompt for disc 1): 1. I've verified that the package set I have resolves all dependencies by testing the installation into a new rpmdb. 2. I've copied over the minimal install DVD contents directly, placed comps.xml in the Packages directory, and recreated repodata (using 'createrepo -g Packages/comps.xml -o . Packages/"). 3. Built on both CentOS 6.5 (with all updates) and Fedora 20. 4. Also tried to minimal DVD _without_ running createrepo (just placed the kickstart in the root of the image). This worked fine. That 4 works suggest that createrepo is at fault, but I can't for the life of me figure out what is going on. I've done this without a base url (-u) and with (using 'head -1 .discinfo). Can anyone offer some suggestions for how to debug further? Thanks - Karl

Hello, With SCL and epel repositories enabled, some dependencies for the package name 'nodejs' get satisfied with libs from SCL which are placed in paths that are not part of my user's environment. Is there a method to make sure that nodeJS from epel dependencies are only satisfied from epel? numa support question on centos 6.5

Hi, All The vm can't start when using numa based on centos 6.5(kernel: kernel-2.6.32-431.17.1.el6.x86_64, qemu-kvm: qemu-kvm-0.12.1.2-2.415.el6_5.8.x86_64). My numa setting in vm xml is the following: -------------------- <numatune> <memory mode='strict' nodeset='1'/> </numatune> -------------------- When 'nodeset' sets '0', the vm can start; However, when setting it to 1, it can't start and report the following error: ---------------------------- error: Failed to start domain testbsd error: internal error Process exited while reading console log output: char device redirected to /dev/pts/1 kvm_create_vcpu: Cannot allocate memory Failed to create vCPU. Hi, I am experimenting with libnetfilter_queue. libnetfilter_queue is a userspace library providing an API to packets that have been queued by the kernel packet filter. I am using sample code(nfqnl_test.c) available on netfilter.org. I have generated two binaries (queue0 and queue1) using that nfqnl_test.c sample code. These binaries are working as per expected behaviour in case of Centos 6.2 but with Centos 6.5 only one queue is receiving network traffic. CentOS 6 KVM networking: What am I missing???

OK, I have a strange problem. It is probably something simple/stupid, but I cannot figure it out. I have a nice new PowerEdge T20 that I installed CentOS 6 (6.5) on with Virtualization (KVM). Machines on the LAN (eg my laptop) can connect to Ububtu VM. *BUT* the host server cannot connect to the Ububtu VM and the Ububtu cannot connect to the host server. Eventually, the new T20 server will take that over, once it is fully set up.)
