Does LibreOffice need to be patched to remove upstream "supplied by" text?

I just noticed that if I click "Help / About" in LibreOffice Writer (and likely other LibreOffice apps), I see: This release was supplied by Red Hat, Inc. Copyright (C) 2000 - 2013 LibreOffice contributors and/or their affiliates LibreOffice was based on OpenOffice.org I know several packages are patched to remove ambiguity as to who supplied the package; should this be one of them? thanks, Greg

quota and selinux on centos 6.5

Hi, I'm facing a challenge with selinux and because I don't got an explanation elsewhere, I'm trying to explain here. I have decided to mount /var/spool/cron on a separate partition and apply quota for regular users. But quotacheck replyes with a "permission denied" . quotacheck: Cannot create new quotafile /var/spool/cron/aquota.user.new: Permission denied quotacheck: Cannot initialize IO on new quotafile: Permission denied Indeed, files in that directory has a context witch denies quotacheck process to write files. To became suitable fo quota, those files (aquota.user and aquota.group) must have quota_db_t type(in context). If I use restorecon /var/spool/cron/aquota.user , it reports that is no default context for that file. Amavisd start

This is CentOS 6. Why can it be that when I try to run /etc/init.d/amavisd start ... I get this error: Starting Mail Virus Scanner (amavisd): Config file "/etc/amavisd.conf" is inaccessible: Permission denied, at /usr/sbin/amavisd line 2085. [FAILED] But when I use sh: sh /etc/init.d/amavisd start ...it starts ok. This is connected to the fact that my amavisd.conf is from another machine (CentOS 5). If I replace amavisd.conf with the default conf (that came with yum install amavisd-new), the starting problem goes away. I would like to debug this, but I don't know where to look. - Jussi

According to the comments in /etc/init/serial.conf you shouldn't have a /etc/init/ttyS0.conf or do anything to /etc/securetty. This is all handled automatically. You just add 'console=tty0 console=ttySX,YZ' to the kernel line in grub and that's it. I did it like this a couple of days ago on 6.5. Works as advertised for me but I have never used a serial console before. -Michael

Log rolling with a daemon

I'm looking for advice or suggestions for rolling log files with a daemon. I have a python script that I daemonized with http://www.jejik.com/articles/2007/02/a_simple_unix_linux_daemon_in_python/. Before I daemonized it it was run from a bash script that invoked the underlying python script. It ran the python script, waited for it to complete and then it slept for 5 seconds and ran it again. This was in a infinite loop. In between each invocation it checked the log file and if it was over 10MB it renamed it and then the next invocation started with a new empty log. Since each invocation was a separate run this worked fine. But now the daemonized python script doesn't exit - the same log file is attached to it forever. So my renaming of the file does nothing - the i node doesn't change and it's still logging to the same large file. Anyone have any ideas how I can achieve this sort of log rolling in this situation? What's the smoothest way to change the monitor on a system? I've done this before and, aside from the initial cold boot (after unplugging the old monitor and plugging in the new one), it also took restarting X (gnome) several times to get the (new) monitor tuned correctly. The "new" (actually a bit old) monitor is an Acer P191W d. It is a 19-inch, LCD flat-screen. Other specs: Aspect Ratio 16:10, Native Resolution 1440 x 900 at 75 Hz Pixel Pitch 0.284 mm Does anyone have an xorg.conf entry for this monitor and/or suggestions as to what a workable (or optimal) xorg.conf entry might be? Thanks much.

About 6 months has passed since the last working version of Opera (12.16) for Linux was released. Opera 18 (Win+Mac only) is now based on Chromium so I'm not holding my breath for it to work with C6 even if it is ever released. Chrome/Chromium is pretty much history too (libs too old). So Firefox is the only game in town. Even lesser knowns like Midori won't work either. Considering the amount of time left in the C6 support cycle, one would have thought TUV would have worked with Google to find a solution but I haven't heard a peep. How can XP, an ancient OS going EOL in a few months, still be supported for the latest Chromium but C6 not? Does anyone know of secret plans to eventually support Chrome/Chromium on C6? (crossing fingers)

TCP port to TTY/Serial Port?

Hello, I'm trying to configure my system such that I have a TCP port listening which will send all data it receives to a serial port. ie: tcp/2112 --> /dev/ttyS0 My goal would be to be able to: Use netcat to create the listen and redirect to a serial port: $ nc -l 2112 > /dev/ttyS0 Then in another window, run minicom at /dev/ttyS0 Then in a 3rd window, $ telnet localhost 2112 "Type things, hello world" But, I can never get the text to show up in the minicom window. I read different variations on the netcat command, including: $ nc -l 2112 <> /dev/ttyS0 or $ nc -l 2112 > /dev/ttyS0 < /dev/ttyS0 But none seem to do the trick. MySQL stale socket

While I wait for the supplier to change the PS, I am facing an issue with MySQL. When the system comes back on, mysqld script starts the daemon, but the connections via /var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock don't work because MySQL doesn't delete and recreate the stale socket. Apart from editing /etc/init.d/mysqld to force the deletion of a stale socket are there any other way to solve this issue? Thank you un advance. Simple-Scan

Hi, I just upgraded from 6.4 to 6.5. In 6.4 I had a scanner program "simple-scan". I can't seem to get it for 6.5. I tried the elrepo and forge repositories but they are not available there. I tried to rebuild it from source but that didn't work. Any suggestions would be appreciated. FYI: My Fujitsu scanner is not TWAIN compliant but it works with "simple-scan". Thank you, Joe

Headless system

So I'm in a bit of a pickle ... I have a machine that needs to be repurposed from WinXP to CentOS. I downloaded the CentOS DVD and all then realized ... I don't have a keyboard/mouse for the machine. It only has USB ports on it, and I don't have a single available USB keyboard that I can plug in. Bit of a problem. Usually what I do is install via VNC anyway, but that is contingent on me already having something on the machine that allows me to connect to it so that when it boots up, I can edit the boot parameters and enable VNC. I don't have that this time. So, the question is: can I make a DVD image that starts the installer with VNC options set and if so, how do I go about that?

Hi, I am using CentOS 6.4. uname -r gives me 3.9.3-x86_64 Kernel version is 2.6.32. My questions - What is 3.9? In Ubuntu, uname -r and /boot give the same version numbers. Do we have a mapping of CentOS versions, the numbers like 3.9 and kernel versions maintained somewhere? Regards, Jayadevan

One thing I neglected to mention about using inotify+lsync for a near-real-time secondary file server is that if the primary server croaks, I can quickly switch users to the secondary. When the primary server is repaired, a one-shot rsync to it brings it back to the current state of users' files. This conflicts a bit with non-deletion of old files on the secondary, but it keeps users going while repairs are made. I haven't had to use this trick ... yet. ZFS Raid-z3 and disk hot swap have done their jobs well so far. I'm toying with the idea of keeping a marker file on the secondary whose timestamp can be used to limit rsync back to the primary to only those files which got added while the secondary was being used. That would take care of the non-deleted files issue on the secondary. Fortunately there are no database files involved in any of this. Chuck

I have not heard of backupbuddy (or dirvish), so I should investigate. Your description makes it sound somewhat like OS-X Time Machine, which I like a lot. Why the huge shmmax default setting?

Fresh load of Centos6/64 from new ISO (downloaded 2 weeks ago?) and getting set up with PostgreSQL, one of the typical steps is to increase shmmax from its normal, conservative value (eg: 32 MB or something) to something far more aggressive. But in recent installs of CentOS 6, this value is generally huge, typically larger than the RAM installed on the machine! For example, fresh installs on systems with 32 GB of RAM, this is already set to 68719476736 (64 GB) This large value doesn't really make sense to me - can somebody explain why the change to such a large value? -Ben

But it makes sleeping at night much easier. I did have to crank up the inotify kernel parameters by a significant amount. I did the initial replication using rsync directly, rather than asking lsyncd to do it. I notice that if I reboot the primary server, it takes a while for the inotify tables to be rebuilt ... after that it's smooth sailing. If you want to prevent deletion of files from your replicated filesystem (which I do), you can modify the rsync{} array in the lsyncd.lua file by adding the line 'delete = false' to it. This has saved my butt a few times when a user has accidentally deleted a file on the primary server. I agree that filesystem replication isn't really a backup, but for now it's all I have available, but at least the replicated fs is on a separate machine. As a side note for anyone using a file server for hosting OS-X Time Machine backups, the 'delete' parameter in rsync{} must be set to 'true' in order to prevent chaos should a user need to point their Mac at the replicate filesystem (which should be a very rare event). I put all TM backups in a separate ZFS sub-pool for this reason. Chuck

Virtual Machine converted from physical : Kernel Panic at boot .

Hi. I used VMware Standalone converter 5.5 to convert a CentOS 5.3 machine from a Physical server to a Virtaul Machine on ESXi 5.1 . Thus far with every attempt to convert this machine I get a "Kernel panic" mount: could not find filesystem '/dev/root' setuproot: moving /dev failed: No such file or directory setuproot: error mounting /proc failed: No such file or directory setuproot: error mounting /sys failed: No such file or directory switchroot: mount failed: No such file or directory Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init!-220000 I have follows the VMware provided solution for this situation but the results are the same http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=di… http://blog.edgoad.com/2010/03/vmware-no-volume-groups-found.html I have re-installed the CentOS kernel but that didn't make any difference. I have tried installing disk labels but that didn't make any difference. I have installed a clean install of 5.3 into a new vm , I even did a custom disk configuration to match that created by VMware Converter and that worked fine with most of the configuration being the same with the exception that it used disk labels. I'm at a loss at this point , I'm open to suggestions. Hi, ldapsearch with an ldaps-URL stopped working recently, probably with the update from openssl 1.0.0 to openssl 1.0.1. LVM recovery after pvcreate

Hi all, I had centos 5.9 installed with one of its volumes (non-root) on LVM: ... /dev/vgapps/lvapps /opt/apps ext3 defaults 1 2 ... Then installed centos 6.4 on this servers but without exporting this volume (I wanted to reuse it). After that instead importing it I did: # pvcreate /dev/sddlmac # vgcreate vgapps /dev/sddlmac And then realised that I should have import it instead of pvcreate/vgcreate. Can I restore previous state and data from this volume ? I have files from /etc/lvm/backup (taken before reinstallation) with its old definition. Regards P.

6.5 minimal kickstart bug?

I am new to kickstart file, but my understanding of the process is that I am supposed to be able to take the anaconda-ks-cfg file from the /root directory, copy it to an accessible location, and point the install disk to it, and it should reproduce the install I did originally. I used the 6.5 minimal install ISO, copied and renamed the ks.cfg. It is seen as a kickstart file, but it refuses to complete the install with the error message: ----------------------------------------------------- Unable to read package metadata. This may be due to a missing repodata directory. Please ensure that your install tree has been correctly generated. Cannot find a valid baseurl for repo: CentOS ------------------------------------------------------ I read the kickstart file and found the Centos reference in the "repo" line, which the docs say is optional. I commented out that line, and the file works fine. I am guessing that this may be a capitalization mismatch? Or is there something I don't know? Do I need to do a bugzilla on this? I'm using CentOS 6.5 and have one connection open to a system in my student doing a software install. I set up a second RDP connection (Applications -> Internet -> Terminal Server Client), but when I double click on it, it will not run. Is there a way to have more than one running? -wes

duplicate packages on connection reset

Hi! I have a small problem with some packages : i was doing an update over ssh and my connection was interrupted .. now i have a lots of duplicates and if i try to remove them, yum tries to uninstall all system (447 packages 1.4 gb)!! Any idea how can i clean this mess? would be pretty bad if the machine needs to be re-installed only because the connection went bad during the process... Thanks for any info!! Adrian

Hey, I have a new laptop for which CentOS 6.5 says hardware not supported, but it still seems to work. So I was happy to hear about the beta and naively planning to wait until 7.0 to install it... But, seeing that RHEL 6 beta->stable took around 6 months, and add to that the CentOS hard work... Do you think we are talking about an autumn 2014 release? Thx, JD

MySQL stale socket

While I wait for the supplier to change the PS, I am facing an issue with MySQL. When the system comes back on, mysqld script starts the daemon, but the connections via /var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock don't work because MySQL doesn't delete and recreate the stale socket. Linux alternative to MS OneNote

Have been looking for an alternative to OneNote which will run on CentOS. I've looked at Evernote, but it's support for Linux is emerging (supports Android, but not other flavors yet). I've looked at nixnote, but it looks as though I might have to make from source. I can do that, but would prefer to find something in the standard CentOS repositories. None of the other recommendations I've found out on the net show up in any 'yum list recommended-tool' runs. Most seem to recommend getting an MS Live account and accessing OneNote in the MS cloud with a browser. I suppose I could do that, but would prefer my data stay on my CentOS box. Any recommendations here? Dave M

Finally.... CentOS on iMac core 2

I've been trying several combinations of OSX, CentOS to try and get CentOS installed on an old iMac. I finally first installed OS X, then installed CentOS in the open space after OS X. With refit installed and selecting CentOS, it starts booting but get a screen that a boot device can't e found. So I then install Xubuntu with the option to replace OS X. After Xbuntu is installed and then do a reboot the grub screen comes up and I can now select CentOS and it will boot. Can someone explain why this is? I can't just install CentOS on the whole disk, as I get the blinking mac disk with question mark. Thanks, -wes

Weblogic logging to syslog?

Hi All. I have a setup in which: - applications deployed in weblogic log directly to weblogic; - components of weblogic (domain, admin server, managed servers) log to proper files (default logging). I would like to connect logging to syslog server. Is it possible? As I have read it is possible to log from applications with log4j if they send logs to weblogic server (on weblogic level configured in domain_root/lib/log4j.xml or log4j.properties). But is it possible to log from weblogic components (domain, admin server, managed servers) to log4j and through it to syslog? Are there any other options than pointing syslog to read from logfiles generated on disk by weblogic? There is much info on the web and I'm quite confused. Thanks for all help. Best regards, Rafal.

New SCL updates pushed

We have Software Collections for CentOS currently in our testing repo: http://dev.centos.org/centos/6/SCL/ To date I don't think I have gotten any feedback, positive or negative, for these SCL RPMs though I know there are hundreds of people using them (or at least downloading them).
