Hi, following requirement is needed here (forced by application migration from C6->C8): I have two services running under supervision by systemd. ServiceA: runs as user AppUser ServiceB: runs as user AppUser ServiceB can see "all" processes from AppUser (ps aux) running by systemd (in fact it sees no other processes). So ServiceB can see the processes of ServiceA. I have also a cron job that runs every 5 minutes as user AppUser. Now the problem is, that ServiceB via ps aux can't see the process of the cron job albeit running by the same AppUser. Which security feature of systemd can be altered to allow seeing all or at least AppUser's processes? ServiceA as only this "features": PrivateTmp=true ServiceB as only this features: PrivateTmp=true RuntimeDirectory=calculation RuntimeDirectoryMode=0755 Any hints would be great! Thanks, Leon

LibreOffice locking up

I am running LibreOffice 5.3.6.1 under the latest update of CentOS 7 and the Mate desktop. Not infrequently LibreOffice Calc locks up and I have to force close the application. Altough the spreadsheet is rather large I would not consider it complex. This has been going on for some time and I am curious if the bug might be in LibreOffice or if there is some interaction with the Mate desktop that might be responsible. Both CentOS, LibreOffice and Mate have been regularly updated from the standard repositories for a long time. Does anyone else have the same problem?

Centos 8 and xfs_quota

Folks I'm trying to use xfs_quota to keep track of disk space usage for my users. The documentation states that I should specify "uquota" as an option on the mount data in /etc/fstab. Yet, I cannot find the entry in fstab that corresponds to the Logical Volume that ends up being mounted on /home1. The system in question was installed on a single disk system. Later, after install, I added a second disk, created a Logical Volume on it, and mounted it as /home1, where all the user data gets stored. It holds an xfs file system. GVIM annoyances

I've just upgraded from my old F9 box to C7, which of course means lots of changes. However, the ones are are annoying me most are with VIM. No matter what I do I can't get gvim to open in a reasonable size. I have a dual headed setup (laptop + external) and every time gvim opens it takes up both screens. I've tried a few suggestions including the one below without success. In fact this one causes X to crash when I start gvim. The second problem I have is the selection of the font. My old box had "sans Regular 12" which was a lovely font to work with. However, when I choose the same font on the new box it's hideous. I don't know best how to request this, but basically how can I have my nice old font back? |if has("gui_running") " GUI is running or is about to start. enp0s25 disconnect

I tried to boot a Centos 8.2 install CD, one burned with Centos-8-2-2004-x86_64-boot . In the setup, it persisted in telling me that ethernet thing enp0s25 was disconnected. Nyet. 'Twas working several seconds previous and is working now. This is a showstopper. How do I debug it? Also, whatever else it did, I now have environment variable HOSTNAME=2001-48F8-3004-2CE-1AE9-F1BF-8759-FF4C-dynamic.midco.net . It shows up on my terminal window headers and as part of the prompt on one terminal. dnsmasq centos 7

HI I setup dnsmasq on my computer. I tested with an entry in /etc/hosts for laptop.w530 I tested with "host laptop.w530" and I get unresolved (expected). If I add "nameserver 192.168.1.8" (my computer) to top of /etc/resolv.conf and do "host laptop.w530" I get 192.168.1.105 - so seems to be working. Then I goto another machine, add the "nameserver 192.168.1.8" to /etc/resolv.conf and do the same "host laptop.w530" and it does not resolve. I can "telnet 192.168.1.8 53" to my machine and I get a response. Am I missing something to have "other" machines ask my machine for name resolution ? Thanks, Jerry

ThinkStation with BIOS RAID and disk error messages in gparted

My ThinkStation runs CentOS 7 which I installed on a BIOS RAID 0 setup with two identical 256 Gb SSDs after removing Windows. It runs fine but I just discovered in gparted something that does not seem right: - Launching gparted it complains "invalid argument during seek for red on /dev/md126" and when I click on Ignore I get another error "The backup GPT table is corrupt, but the primary appears OK, so that will be used." I then click on OK whereupon I again see the second error message. I then see "Not all of the space available to /dev/sdb appears to be used, you can fix the GPT to use all of the space (an extra 6832 blocks) or continue with the current setting? " I click on Fix but nothing seems to happen. I am not sure what /dev/md126 is but it is the exact same size as sda and sdb which I believe are the two RAID disks. I also have two other hard disks which seem to be fine, one using XFS, the other ZFS. Does this look familiar to anyone? Given the error messages it seems this is something I ought to fix sooner rather than later. Any idea what I should do? Thanks.

Odd issue happening CentOS 7

So I have two CentOS 7 machines running. if I am on my server and I do "curl http://192.168.1.8" I get data. If I do "host devgeis.LayeredSolutionsInc.com" I get the correct address 192.168.1.8 if I goto another machine with CentOS 7. I do "curl http://192.168.1.8" I get data. I do "host devgeis.LayeredSolutionsInc.com" I get the correct address 192.168.1.8 BUT then I do "curl http://devgeis.LayeredSolutionsinc.com" I get "nothing" BUt then doing the -v with "curl -v http://devgeis.LayeredSolutionsinc.com" * About to connect() to devgeis.LayeredSolutionsinc.com port 80 (#0) * Trying 198.168.1.8... So why when using the name is it not giving me the index.html page ? Should not be a firewall issue - as the actual address worked. Also I tried stopping the firewall - and all the above is the exact same. What is possibly happening here ? Thanks Jerry

Run as root on reboot

Folks Is there a way to reboot and have a script run without intervention. During initial setup, I'd like to avoid the manual actions of logging on as root and executing a command, but instead have that command run without intervention. The output of the command would still show up on the terminal that initiated the reboot. Security is not a concern here. And I don't want to invoke high-powered functions like "jumpstart". David

System not logging

One of my boxes has stopped logging some of the things it's supposed to. I use rsyslog which used to send named and dhcpd entries to separate log files. Both named and dhcpd are working. I have shut down the DHCPD server and run it in debug mode and the output is produced as expected. I have shut down rsyslog and run that in debug mode and it looks like everything is running, but it's not receiving messages to log. I tried journalctl | grep -Ei 'dhcpd'|tail and I see the log entries for the service starting up, but no entries for DHCP transactoins happening. My rsyslog also receives network messages from my firewall and they are logging as expected. This suggests to me that the problem is that the log entries are either not being generated, or are not being allowed to get to rsyslog. Anyone go any ideas? I've tried the usual first step, and briefly disabled selinux but that made no difference Gary

Centos 7 + PHP7.2 - variables_order not working

I've just moved my site onto a new box and I'm having a real problem with $_REQUEST. The variables_order and request_order values are not being respected. I need the cookies to take the lowest priority, so I put it first in the sequence. However, as the code below shows this is not happening. Changing variables_order and request_order does not make any difference. Anyone got any ideas why? I've not seen this before. Any guidance appreciated. Been running CentoS 6.1 on my stuff in my 1-man office trying to buy time to have some liesure to learn the non inittab/telinit/runlevel stuff as I put up CentOS 8. So, yes I know EOL is upon me but since I've tried to become a user after exiting comp. biz decades ago I no longer stay with the "latest and greatest". Anyway, Have 6.10 up-to-date on a Ryzen 1700 and it run good. Installed the EPEL Nvidia k-mod driver and have been trting the 4.4 series of kernels from EPEL as well. It LOOKs, subjectively, to run much faster than the 2.6.32.xx kernel and, I suspect, will be more compatible with this hardware. Boots and runs non-graphical (runlevel 2) just fine. Problem is when I go to run level five it hangs on certmonger when running the 4.4 kernels. Googled and so form a LONG time agao (10 years maybe?) there had been an issue of hanging at certmonger that was fixed but I never found how it was fixed. Anyone have a cluebat for the clueless how I can get this combination to run? TIA, Bill

I did a yum update on my CentOS 6 laptop and it upgraded Firefox to 78, and FF stopped seeing my mic and speakers. Is there some magic I need to do? As a short term (?) fix, I downgraded back to Firefox 68. Network Manager - rotate connection profile

I wasn't sure what to call this in the subject line, but here's my issue. I have an occasional need to switch a few computers from one Internet provider to a different one. Both Internet providers feed into the same network, one at 192.168.0.1 and the other at 192.168.0.254. So to change from one provider to the other I run nmtui to change the gateway and dns server addresses, then deactivate and reactivate the connection and I'm done. It's just takes a few minutes, but I'm wondering if there's a way to automate this a bit so instead of having to run nmtui and change all of those numbers, then deactivate and reactivate the connection, I could just have each configuration saved as a text file or something, and just tell network manager "use this configuration now until further notice." I could, of course, accomplish this using dhcp and change the dhcp server configurations as needed, but I'd prefer to have all of this stuff stored on each local machine like it is now. That way I could even automate it with a cronjob or something if I wanted to get that efficient. -- Can we uninstall 2020 and install it again? This one has a virus. Normally I run Centos 7, but I accidently booted a German Knoppix OS. I'm back to Centos 7, but now my LXterms all have hennebry@Microknoppix on top. WTF? How did that happen? How do I fix it? How do I make it not happen again? What other trouble should I be looking for? I opened a couple LXterms, looked at man pages and ran xrandr as root a few times. Also I ran shutdown a couple times. That's it. I'm rather annoyed at the result. Hello, I noticed that this link https://wiki.centos.org/SpecialInterestGroup/Storage reports an available package called centos-release-gluster8 This package is missing in Extra repo for el7. The general package called centos-release-gluster links instead to the latest version of glusterfs7. Could the general rpm be update to include glusterfs8? I see that the repo is already working here: http://mirrorlist.centos.org/?arch=x86_64&release=7&repo=storage-gluster-8 and also here http://buildlogs.centos.org/centos/7/storage/x86_64/gluster-8 So i think, it should be really easy to push the update. Login failure with Secure Boot

Hi all, I have a laptop in UEFI mode running CentOS 8.2. All works fine but when I enable Secure Boot, login via gdm is no longer possible. Console login is ok. I found some related discussions over on Ubuntu forums, suggesting that this could be related to 3rd-party kernel modules, such as nvidia. This laptop has only Intel builtin graphics, and every single module installed is part of the CentOS distribution. This is from a file /tmp/xses-.XXXXXX (random 6-char string) xrdb: Can't open display '' xmodmap: unable to open display '' Failed to import environment: Process org.freedesktop.systemd1 exited with status 1 /usr/bin/xmbind: Can't open display Unable to init server: Could not connect: Connection refused Something is different in the way Xorg is started. In this situation, the first part of the Xorg log file (under ~/.local) is a dump of X command line options. use: X [:<display>] [options] -a # ... -ac ... ...

Missing the old sytle gnome-software in CentOS 8 -- help!

Hello folks -- I recently got a new laptop and installed CentOS8 on it. Yes, it's a learning curve. What I am really upset/disappointed with is the "new" gnome-software application. It doesn't provide nearly the functionaility of the older gnome 3.28 app. Yes, I do know how to list EVERYTHING via the command line but the ease of listing files etc associated with a packages is now gone. Apache HTTPD not picking up environment variables.

I'm trying to install DB2 on a CentOS 7 server. The problem I'm seeing is that the Apache httpd server fails to pick up the db2 environment variables. On an older version running under CentOS 5 this was done by inserting the following lines into the httpd start script in /etc/sysconfig/httpd: if test -f /db2home/db2inst1/sqllib/db2profile; then . /db2home/db2inst1/sqllib/db2profile fi Under CentOS 7's systemctl system this no longer works. I need a clue as to where to start looking for where to put this so it will be sourced when the Apache server starts. I have googled this and can find nothing relevant. I even did a "find / -name httpd -print" and didn't find anything looking promising. Thanks for your help Harold

External harddisk

I have an old external harddisk, Toshiba 320 Gb, with a USB connector that I wanted to check for contents. It did not start up when connected and I could not hear the motor spinning. After leaving it in the freezer overnight the motor spins but it is not recognized by my computer. I disassembled it and could see that the head assembly rests outside the disk but when it is powered on, the head first moves to the center of the disk, then to the periphery and finally back to the resting position. This happens every few seconds and leaving it connected overnight changed nothing. I installed smartmontools but the disk is not even recognized by my system as a /dev/sd* device and therefore not accessible to smartd (at least as far as I know it.) Any suggestions for what I could try? I am running CentOS 7. Thank you.

UID/GID CentOS 6 to CentOS 7

Hi, we are upgrading some servers from C6 to C7 with a lot of user accounts on them (UID>=500). CentOS 7 has MIN_UID/MIN_GID 1000, Centos 6 has 500 in login.defs. Can I change in /etc/login.defs MIN_UID/MIN_GID to 500 for C7? So I could just grep the users out from passwd/shadow/group files and append them to the Centos7 passwd/shadow/group files. Can this do any damage to CentOS7 later on? Thinking about updates.... Thanks, Thomas

Hallo, we ve a central Cent7 system working as NFS server. Everything works fine with simple configurations like one client is mapping a share and several clients are mapping a share to edit one or more files wotling as root The problem: fpr a projekt we ve 4 elk-nodes sharing one share on this server to use the same files. This doesn t work. My guess is that the reason is that elk is using an own user. What ist the best way to solve the problem. We have no central user-managemnt for linux-logins. Thanks Ralf

system sounds

Hello, I am using 'Centos 7.8.2003 (Core)' and after an update, a week or two ago, all system sounds seemed to have stopped working. Sound in firefox still works, and also rhythmbox seems to play music files, VLC player do too. It seems that just things like notifications etc are not woring anymore. Also, the "test speakers" in the sound setup doesn't seem to produce any sound. any ideas? thanks, Ron

Hi community, In CentOS 7 there is such rpm (libcxx-devel - it seems from EPEL repository), but in CentOS 8 it isn't. Mail server troubles

Hi, This is probably a bit OT, but here goes. I've been running our local school's mail server since 2013, with mail addresses for school staff and some teachers. The server is running CentOS 7 with Postfix and Dovecot, and it's a nice no-bullshit configuration with SPF, DKIM and DMARC. The school sends quite a lot of email out to parents, and sometimes, mail gets rejected: --8<-------------------------------------------------------- <xxxxxxxx(a)orange.fr>: host smtp-in.orange.fr[193.252.22.65] said: 550 5.2.0 Mail rejete. SEcontext setting failure on an external harddisk

I tried moving a PosgreSQL database to an external harddisk due to lack of space on the main harddisks. Not the ideal solution of course but it should work. However, on CentOS 7 the external harddisk is mounted under /run/media and the user. I copied the postgresql database directory and made sure it is owned recursively by postgres, changed the necessary settings in both the systemd unit and the conf file. After that, updating the selinux contexts is required but that fails on the external disk due to a conflict which I understand is due it is under /run/media and the user. semanage fcontext kicked back an error message suggesting I try setting it for /var/run/media etc instead which works but restorecon -Rv for that directory fails to set the context which I can check with ls -lZ. Does anyone know how I can get around this? Is there an inherent conflict because it is mounted under a specific user despite the postgresql directory is owned by postgres? If so, should I mount it under eg /opt/ instead? Would that make a difference? Or, can I "force" a new context on the postgres directory tree some other way? Thanks!

Invisible files and disk space

Hi All, I have an older CentOS 7.4 system that is used for computationally heavy work. It has a 32G root filesystem, of which 33% is consumed. Lately, one particular set of jobs (run through the SGE batch scheduler) seems to cause a peculiar condition to occur in which the root filesystem space is exhausted but I can't find any files that I can use to identify which process is causing the problem. I'm guessing that the problem is being triggered by a certain set of jobs since it only occurs when those jobs are running. I would like to identify what the process is that is causing this condition to occur and my standard approach is to identify which files are using the otherwise empty space and then identify which process is using the files. It's not working, I haven't been able to identify the files. They aren't there. All attempts to measure disk usage of / by files shows that the disk usage is only a percentage of available space and that there should be space available. I know that space can be consumed by deleted files for which file handles are still open, not visible by ls but detectable but by using techniques like: lsof | grep deleted and for sizing find /proc/*/fd -ls 2>/dev/null | grep '(deleted)' | \ sed 's!.*$/proc[^ ]*$.*!\1!' | xargs wc -c | sort -nr Applying this technique during one of these episodes shows nothing of interest. I'm definitely missing something. Are there any other techniques for identifying other "invisible" files that I can look for? Thanks in advance for any advice.

Centos 7.7 and ATI driver

As you have seen in another message I have a failed system after an update from 7.5. I /think/ the issue might be with the ATI driver which seems to fail to load a framebuffer in Xorg.0.log. Is anyone successfully running a Radeon graphics card on 7.7? If so, might you share any issues and solutions? Thanks.

strange email from cron regarding "rear"

How to solve missing net-snmp-perl?

Hello, Since Centos 8.2 the net-snmp-perl RPM seems missing. I already found a bug ticket https://bugs.centos.org/view.php?id=17408 It looks like the package should actually be available in AppStream. But for some reason it's not. The package stuff at https://git.centos.org/rpms/net-snmp.git look like before. The RPM file should be generated. Now I wonder, how does the Centos infrastructure decide, which RPM to include into the repository? When it's based on the tags, shouln't the net-snmp-perl RPM be included together with the other RPMs? I already studied the public available documation of the build system. But I couldn't get the information I need. Any hint for me? Thanks.

[CentOS7] cups, cups-browsed

Hi, I have a strange problem on one laptop with cups in CentOS7, all updates applied. Sometime, the lpstat -t command returns "No destination host name supplied by cups-browsed for printer" and asks if cups-browsed is running. Nonetheless cups-browsed is running and is configured. Restarting cups-browsed does not help so the problem is not related to cups-browsed . The solution is to manually restart cups service But, the user has no root access on his laptop (it is not allowed in our professional environment) so the only work-around would be a cron task. But this is a work-around, not a solution to this problem. Did someone encounter this behavior and found the solution ? Could it be related to swiching from Wifi (at home) to wired network (at workplace)? I have several laptops, all installed with the same kickstart file via PXE boot and cups running fine. All are DELL computers except this one which is a HP ZBook. Thanks Patrick

Script to rebuild CentOS 8 boot ISO with plus kernel

I want to install CentOS 8 on some older Dells that have storage controllers dropped by RHEL 8. The CentOS 8 kernel-plus package supports them, so I wrote a script that rebuilds the boot ISO to boot and install using the kernel-plus package from the centosplus repo. https://github.com/cmadamsgit/misc-scripts/ I know you can use driver disks to load additional modules from elsewhere, but I wanted to end up with the kernel-plus anyway, so why not just do it during install? Centos8: Glusterd do not start correctly when I startup or reboot all server together

Seem is a boot network problem Then I have try modify glusterd.service with $ sudo systemctl edit glusterd.service --full And modify the unit in this way: #old < After=network.target < Before=network-online.target #new > After=network.target network-online.target > #Before=network-online.target Now all work fine, mostly when I start or restart all server together. Laptop display issue

I now have an older laptop with a display problem. I installed Centos 7 on it in February and had to install the xorg-x11-drv-ati and evdev drivers because the docking station has an ATI Radeon card. Everything worked fine with a dual display setup. I probably after that ran a system update but did not reboot while in this office. Today, when I got to the office again for the first time in seven months it does not boot into the desktop but fails after displaying ”Started Light Display Manager” with a mouse pointer on one display that can be moved but no desktop at all. The keyboard works and I can start a terminal session. If I remove the laptop from the docking station everything works as expected but not in the station, presumably because it now uses the docking station card. Futzing around I see that systemctl --failed lists nothing, nor did dmesg immediately suggest a reason. In the yum history I see that this driver was updated to 19.0.1-3 from the 19.0.1-2 that installed with. Yum downgrade to 19.0.1-2 did not change the issue. Nor has booting an older kernel helped so far. Although when I remove quiet from the grub command line it seems to stop after ”Started Load CPU microcode update” following the ”Started Light Display Manager” already mentioned, I strongly suspect some issue with the graphics driver. Since the computer boots and seems to run fine with the internal display when removed from the docking station it seems that there are no hardware issues in the unit itself. My understanding is that the ATI driver can be a problem and needs to match the kernel etc - perhaps there is something wrong here? Any suggestions for how to attack this? I need to use it in the docking station and have no alternative. Thank you.
