3.11.5 kernel compile

Hey all, I have just compiled the 3.11.5 kernel from kernel.org to fix the ACPI wont shutdown issue, but I have a couple errors in dmesg I am trying to figure out. Can anyone point me in the right direction? The errors are: 1: dm_mod: module verification failed: signature and/or required key missing - tainting kernel 2: [drm] VGACON disable radeon kernel modesetting. [drm:radeon_init] *ERROR* No UMS support in radeon module!

VNC

I'm trying to set up a VNC server using the instructions at http://www.techrepublic.com/blog/linux-and-open-source/linux-101-easy-vnc-s… . I am up to step 6: Step 6: Edit iptables In order for the VNC connections to get through, you must allow them with iptables. To do this, open up the file /etc/sysconfig/iptables and add the line: -A INPUT -m state --state NEW -m tcp -p tcp -m multiport --dports 5901:5903,6001:6003 -j ACCEPT Save the file and restart iptables with the command: service iptables restart When I issue the restart command I get: iptables: Applying firewall rules: iptables-restore: line 1 failed [FAILED] Note that I did not have an iptables file before but there is an iptables-config file. Can someone help me complete this configuration. Thanks! -larry

SSH login from user with empty password

Hello list, on a CentOS 6.4 machine I'm creating accounts with empty passwords. Each user's public key is located in <user's home>/.ssh/authorized_keys. When trying to ssh into that machine, following error message is displayed: Permission denied (publickey). In /etc/ssh/sshd_config I've set: PasswordAuthentication no UsePAM no If I set a password for the users, the public key auth works without any problems. Could anyone tell me what I'm missing here? CentOS 6.4: sound not working

Good morning, I've got a new system with a fresh 6.4 installation. I didn't check if the sound worked at first but I know it doesn't now. :) The system board is an ASRock Extreme6. The Specs say it has a Realtek ALC1150 audio chipset and 7.1 channels. I'm running KDE and an Nvidia X driver (I need the video performance of this driver - sorry about that). The System Tools for Audio Output list 4 devices: HDA Intel (HDA Generic) Default PulseAudio HDA NVidia (HDMI 0) The speakers are connected via the typical audio jack and when I test "HDA Intel (HDA General)" it says that the default device did not work and it is using the PulseAudio device. I tested all 4 devices and nothing ever played. I've also made sure I have the audio jack plugged into the right port on the board :) I Googled a bit and one site suggested reinstalling the alsa kernel module, which I did. No change - still no sound. Any suggestions? Thanks! Jeff

Sound Volume Setting At Login

Hey all, When I log on my sound level is set at about 35%. I have to use the sound preferences to turn the sound level up every time I log in. Other users on this same system do not have this issue. When they log in their volume is set at 100%. This leads me to believe that there must be something in my local settings that is turning down my sound volume settings. display full-screen color graphic without X

Need to test a monitor attached to a running server, so I'm looking for an application/utility to display a large color graphic. This must be possible to do without X because a splash screen comes up when this system boots. The best graphic to display obviously would be some kind of fullscreen test pattern. Anyone know where to get that? tia, ken

As I worked thru fixing first /dev/null, each step got me a bit further, with more complaints about inaccessable /dev/ entries, so I just kept fixing them until the complaints went away. I also compared permissions in /dev against my Fedora 19 netbook, which is how I knew what permissions to use for the rest, as well as being where I found correct permissions, as well as /dev/zero and /dev/full being wrong. I have NO CLUE what hosed the permissions, and I can't be sure that there may not be some other items also wrong (that I can't see because they don't appear on the F19 system). Can anyone suggest an accurate way to have the system fix all the permissions in /dev? some arcane options on rpm, perhaps? thanks! Centos 6.4 - doesnt power off with shutdown/poweroff cmd

Hello, I'm looking for help figuring out why I am having problems with shutting down a machine. I have tested the machine using Fedora 19 and Ubuntu 12 Live CD's and both power down without issues. cleaning up some LVM stuff

Hi, one more LVM thing: on one server some LVM stores are physically removed but still there are some informatione somwher spread adcross teh server. e.g. if I do a vgdisplay or pvcreat I get an error regarding that old storage: /dev/raid_10/lvol0: read failed after 0 of 4096 at 14000515383296: Eingabe-/Ausgabefehler How can I remove all information? Odd useradd/LDAP behaviour

Hello list, On our CentOS 6.4 machines I've LDAP enabled such that Windows users with the requisite unix attributes can log into the machines. These remote windows users have UID/GID starting at 20000 so are well out of the way of local users. If I now create a local user with useradd, the UID/GID of the local user is the next available number in the range used by the Windows users. This is, users created before setting up LDAP are UID 501, 502 etc, but new users are 200XX. This then potentially causes problems when a new LDAP user is added, as we then have two users with the same UID/GID values. I've resolved this by editing the UID_MAX and GID_MAX fields in /etc/login.defs so the value is below the range used by the windows users. New test user gets UID/GID 503 as expected. I guess specifying the values in the useradd command would also work. So why is LDAP making useradd use the wrong values? Thanks for any suggestions, Paul

CentOS6.4 and Apple keyboard

I have just installed (with kikstart) centOS6.4 on a PC which was previously running OpenSUSE (11.x). This PC has an apple keyboard and I'm unable to setup this keyboard. In .xsession-errors I get this messages : Error: No Symbols named "latin9" in the include file "macintosh_vndr/fr" Exiting Abandoning symbols file "(null)" ** (gnome-settings-daemon:8160): WARNING **: Could not activate the XKB configuration Error: No Symbols named "latin9" in the include file "macintosh_vndr/fr" Exiting Abandoning symbols file "(null)" ** (gnome-settings-daemon:8160): WARNING **: Could not activate the XKB configuration Google found on a RedHat forum that it seams to be an old known bug but do not find any update or workaround. Port knocking and DNAT rules

So I found an excellent port knocking tutorial using ONLY iptables rules that looks to be among the best I've ever seen. (warning: techno music, tough to read screen, you don't need to type it in because I post a link to script below) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0zFQocf7C_0 It works fabulously for simply opening a port to a locally managed service, but I can't seem to get it to work for a PREROUTING/DNAT rule. I've posted the shell script I'm trying to get to work, it should be self-documented. http://chico.benjamindsmith.com/iptables.txt I've confirmed that the logs correctly show port knocking 2, 3, and 4 in /var/log/messages so everything seems to be working golden all the way up to the last line. There are no errors reported when I run this script. The result that I get is that it acts as though packets are being dropped for 15 seconds, then I get connection refused. What am I doing wrong?

sssd - ldap uid/gid does not match with uid/gids in the openLDAP DS

CentOS 6.4 (amd64) client desktop with SSSD installed+configured to do LDAP AUTH from an openLDAP DS. Groups in LDAP DS -- dsusers (for all users), project1, project2, .... The objective is to give group permissions to directory trees with users belonging to various groups; users thereby inheriting the ACL given to respective groups. Test case -- uid: jdoe, gid: dsusers (primary) On LDAP client workstation - id jdoe shows uid+gid as above. Then I add uid jdoe to the 'project1' group in the openLDAP DS. On the client workstation - id jdoe shows member of 'dsusers' only. Thinking it could be due to local cache, I have deleted the files in /var/lib/sss/db/ and still id jdoe reports member of dsusers only. I have also waited > 5 mins. expecting the client side cache to be updated but still the same issue. jdoe does not show up as member of project1. In order for jdoe to show up as member of 'project1' group, I have to restart sssd. In sssd.conf, in the domain section enumerate=FALSE. I would appreciate any pointers to shorten the client side updates regarding uid+gid association. TIA. -- Arun Khan

[CEntOS] - problem with iptables

hi all, I have a problem with iptables on CentOS 6.2. I configured: chkconfig iptables on and the file /etc/sysconfig/iptables if you reboot the machine configurations are not loaded. iptables-L gives me the default configurations (not assigned) if I (a machine booted): service iptables start then then it works. how can I fix? thanks in advance

Wireless connection issue - athero 9300 pci wireless card

I built myself a desktop with an additional PCI wireless card 'TP-LInk WPN3800', which I have checked needs an ath9k driver. * **04:00.0 Network controller: Atheros Communications Inc. AR9300 Wireless LAN adaptor* Following the wireless connection tutorial on CentOS wiki, I have both kernel-devel 2.6.6 and ath9k installed. Then I tried * $ modprobe ath9k *but nothing happened. Then I input *$ service NetworkManager start $ chkconfig NetworkManager on *to access the Network Manager and no wireless connection options appear. I do not think it is a big problem for you guys, but I am really a beginner. Please share me some solutions for that. Thank you!

mdraid strange surprises...

Hey, I installed 2 new data servers with a big (12TB) RAID6 mdraid. I formated the whole arrays with bad blocks checks. One server is moderately used (nfs on one md), while the other not. One week later, after the raid-check from cron, I get on both servers a few block_mismatch... 1976162368 on the used one and a tiny bit less on the other... That seems a tiny little bit high... I do the whole repair+recheck and it is back to zero. For brand new arrays, I am not very happy about the way mdraid seems to function (with the manual/croned checks, repairs, checks, checks, repairs, checks...) I will have to see next week how high the mismatches reach... Since my desktop is a RAID1 mdraid on 2 disks, I decided to have a look for fun... Apart from some low count mismatches, I did not have many problems... XFS quotas not working at all (seemingly)

Hi All, I have a very strange problem that I'm unable to pinpoint at the moment. For some reason I am simply unable to get xfs_quotas to report correctly on a freshly installed, fully patched CentOS 6 box. I have specified all the same options as on another machine which *is* reporting quota LABEL=TEST /exports/TEST xfs inode64,nobarrier,delaylog,usrquota,grpquota 0 0 xfs_quota -xc 'limit -u bsoft=900m bhard=1g user' /exports/TEST however xfs_quota -xc 'report -hu' /exports/ reports back nothing pertaining to the user but if a do a quota user I get information back Disk quotas for user user (uid 67876): Filesystem blocks quota limit grace files quota limit grace /dev/mapper/DATA-TEST 0 921600 1048576 1 0 0 This is very strange and it's something new. Can anyone confirm similar findings on their machines before I consider reporting a bug? -- James A. Best configuration for encrypted software RAID 1?

I'm setting up a computer with CentOS 6.4 and a mirrored software RAID. I would like it to be encrypted so I was wondering what the best configuration is. The only info I could find is http://lists.centos.org/pipermail/centos-docs/2008-October/001912.html but it appears to be a bit old and the info on the wiki ( http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/EncryptTmpSwapHome ) doesn't seem to address RAIDs. My main question is will it be better to encrypt the RAID itself or the two partitions used by the RAID? Any other things I should be aware of? Thanks, Dave

Sendmail not presenting AUTH option after EHLO

Hello folks, I have a CentOS 6.4 installation running Sendmail, and after some serious hair tear stare and compare I'm a bit stumped. When I connect to the server either with telnet or SSL, sendmail is not presenting the AUTH capability after an EHLO. Everything looks like it should be working, but no amount of tweaking is getting the AUTH capability advertised (and it doesn't work if you just try it anyway). VNCserver not starting due to errors

A VNC server is already running as :1 else: endif not found. [FAILED] If I stop it, and then restart it, I get the same error message. "blah" has been changed for security purposes on this email, but the real name is a valid user. I want to be on window "0", not 1. Any tips or suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Hi All, I know many of us here manage RAID on our Centos based servers so this may be of interest to us all. I ordered three new "Enterprise hard drives" this month from a well known UK online retailer. The drives arrived as new in their anti-static packaging. Before using one of the drives in a mission critical hardware raid I checked the SMART attributes and was amazed at what I saw; see a few of the attributes listed below 1 Raw_Read_Error_Rate 0x002f 200 200 051 Pre-fail - 2600 9 Power_On_Hours 0x0032 098 097 000 Old_age - 2106 12 Power_Cycle_Count 0x0032 100 100 000 Old_age - 80 198 Offline_Uncorrectable 0x0030 196 196 000 Old_age - 398 200 Multi_Zone_Error_Rate 0x0008 180 180 000 Old_age - 4077 So for a brand new packaged drive this was a bit of a surprise. "2106" power on hours, obviously should be zero for a new drive and "398" "Offline_Uncorrectable sectors" this is a well used and faulty drive. I contacted the (very well known) manufacturer of the drive and asked for information on the serial number. I was told the serial number of the drive was region specific to the USA and should not even be in the UK. I opened and tested the second and third drives with similar results. I was told two of the drives had already been returned under warranty and replaced with new drives. Wow... I was also told by the online retailer this is known as a grey import and is not that uncommon.. So it may be a good policy to check the SMART attributes of drives before deployment! Cheers, Steve

C6: kickstart problems with additional repo

Hi, I'm kickstarting a vm in ESXi 5.1. ks.cfg is on floppy, install media is ISO file. This works great as long as I don't add an additional repo, in our case it is vmware tools on one of our webservers. If I add the repo line, anaconda asks then for the used network card and indeed, switching to console the interfaces are still unconfigured. Chosing eth0 in gui continues the installation! This is the relevant part of ks.cfg install cdrom lang de_DE.UTF-8 keyboard de-latin1 skipx network --onboot yes --device eth0 --bootproto static --ip=192.168.200.28 --netmask=255.255.255.0 --gateway=192.168.200.1 --nameserver=192.168.200.9 --noipv6 network --onboot no --device eth1 --bootproto static --noipv6 network --onboot no --device eth2 --bootproto static --noipv6 repo --name=vmware51 --baseurl=http://xxx/repo/vmware/5.1/rhel6Server-x86_64/ I'm beginning to think the problem is, my install media is ISO and I have an additional http repo which is not available in this stage... Hey guys, I'm trying to write a simple bash script that will cp a configuration file to a backup (with the date) remotely to a bunch of machines, using sudo with ssh. Email access via Android device

I'm pretty sure that this is possible, but I don't currently know enough about email to know where to start. My main desktop computer runs Centos 6 and my preferred email client is Sylpheed, which supports both POP and IMAP email, and my "internal network" has a static IP address, so getting access to the computer from the big scary world via my phone isn't a problem. I have six different email accounts that live on various servers. I have Sylpheed set up to poll each account once every ten minutes using POP3 and download all incoming mail. Upon receipt, I have a whole lot of filters in Sylpheed to sort the mail into various subdirectories of my Mail directory. For example, one of my directory structures under Mail is inbox/1/2, and email may be sorted in Mail/inbox or Mail/inbox/1 or Mail/inbox/1/2, or other subdirectories outside of inbox like, for example, Mail/3. In short, I have a dozen or so subdirectories that Sylpheed sorts mail into based on various criteria like From or Subject. What I would like to do is somehow make this whole thing available on my Android phone (Samsung Galaxy 3). As it sits right now, if I am not sitting in front of my computer the only way I can check my email is to ssh into it and look at the files in each of those subdirectories using a text utility like less; this is really inconvenient and I can't reply to emails that way until I get back in front of my computer. I'm thinking that I need to run some kind of a mailserver on my computer that can be accessed by both Sylpheed locally and by ??? on my Android device. I get the impression that if I wanted to hand all of my email over to gmail I could then have something like this working. I don't particularly want to do that; I would rather have something running on my own machine to do it. I could use something else to poll for my email (fetchmail?). Sylpheed does have a configuration setting that I'm not currently using that says "Enable strict checking of summary caches -- enable this if the contents of the folders may be changed by other applications" so based on that I think it can handle having messages magically changed by a program on my Android device. What is the best way to approach this? My best idea so far is to set up fetchmail (or something) to do the pop downloads of incoming mail, and have some kind of a local imap server running though which I access the actual mail via any email client that can work with an imap account. Then I can set up Sylpheed to access only one account, that being the one on my local computer, and run some imap-using mail client on the Android device for remote access. Having never actually used an imap email account in this way, that leads to a couple of other questions. (The only thing I've ever done with imap is set up squirrelmail.) What about filtering the email into those directories? Procmail? And what happens to sent email -- I assume that the SMTP part of the mail client wouldn't actually change -- I would still send outbound mail directly through the mailserver where my email account exists, right? But does it (can it) also send a copy to the imap mail store so I can send email from Android and later on review what I sent with Sylpheed? -- MELVILLE THEATRE ~ Real D 3D Digital Cinema ~ www.melvilletheatre.com

Hello, I have a CENTOS 5 box that can reach the internet and can ping to/from all windows system on my home network. The catch is that I can not connect to the box using SSH from any windows machine, though they can easily ping the linux box and vice-versa. Hi, I am running an up to date centos5.9 system. The package, net-snmp-devel-5.3.2.2-20.el5 Contains among oteher things: /usr/lib/libnetsnmpagent.so When I link with this library (-lnetsnmpagent), I get a bunch of unresolved references.: My Google searches has not given me hints to where the C to Perl library exists. I would guess that yum would have loaded the correct package as a dependency: Could someone point me to the correct library? CentOS Continuous Release Updates are Available for 5.10

The Continuous Release Updates for CentOS-5.10 are released to the CR repo. The anaconda and centos-release packages for 5.10 are not released into the CR (as they may need to change for the installable tree), but all other updates are there. For information on what the CR is, see this link: http://wiki.centos.org/AdditionalResources/Repositories/CR We are now focusing on creating an installable tree and creating the ISOs for CentOS-5.10 .. I would expect that we would have the full 5.10 release (tree and ISOs) in 10-14 days from this announcement. I am using webtatic on CentOS 5.x. I started using it some years back because as I can remember (vaguely) I had problems using php53 RPMs (can't remember details, however). Thanks for php 5.4 info - I haven't used it yet. I installed remi (php 5.5) on CentOS 6.x but, yes, it seems many apps don't like php 5.5. Hello, During a reposync of the centos base mirror, how come there are more packages downloaded than the iso file contains... The iso's Packages directory contains 3956 rpm packages. The reposync of base holds 6381 rpm packages. You can connect to a samba share without user or password authentication. That's how I have my server setup at my house. SMTP Auth Spam Mail Attack

Hi All I have a server which seems to be getting spam relayed through it. The story is this..... User reported loads of undeliverables being received so I had a trawl through the logs. So the attacker connects to our server using SMTP AUTH........ Oct 5 15:17:53 www sendmail[6972]: AUTH=server, relay=pppoe9.net109-120-27.se1.omkc.ru [109.120.27.9] (may be forged), authid=jon, mech=LOGIN, bits=0 This then seemingly passes the AUTH for the user jon and allows the system to send e-mails such as the following. Oct 5 15:17:58 www sendmail[6982]: r95EHqoc006972: to=<qqueenllouise(a)aol.com>, ctladdr=<jon(a)xxxxxxxx.co.uk> (516/100), delay=00:00:05, xdelay=00:00:02, mailer=esmtp, pri=300552, relay=mailin-03.mx.aol.com. [205.188.156.193], dsn=2.0.0, stat=Sent (2.0.0 Ok: queued as B648F3800008D) Now there seem to be 2 user names that appear in the logs with the authid= one is jon as above and the other is jon(a)xxxxx.co.uk (obviously I have replaced the real domain with xxxxx) Now the interesting thing is that there are only a handful of sites on the server and they are set up so the site has a main username and any other addresses that need to accept mail are set as aliases. So in effect there is only one user per domain with one email account. So despite the main account not being "jon" or "jon(a)xxxxx.co.uk" and there are no users on the domain with those usernames, SMTP auth accepets the user and authenticates correctly to allow the relay through. I have checked the server with an external SMTP checker, and it is not an open relay. I have changed the password on the domain in question and they are still getting in. I have tried changing the password and sending mail with the old password, this gets .. relying denied, so SMTP auth is working ok. I have been through the server and looked at each domain for these users, I did find one called jon on an old domain which I have now deleted, just in case this was accepting the SMTP auth. Has anyone any idea how they can be authenticating against SMTP auth with a username that does not exist on the server ?
