Unattended install of CentOS in a VM with given login/password?

Is there a way to make CentOS install unattended, right from the boot until I can SSH into it?. I'd like being able to boot a new Virtualbox virtual machine right from the CentOS ISO, and then from the Virtualbox host, ssh into the brand new VM client and customize it using SSH shell scripts (SU, yum install, etc). Is there any way to tweak the ISO to specify "unattended install" and the root password (to be later changed after VM is installed).? The main idea is turning this into a bash script so I can download whatever new language and to the VM install "automagically". Thanks in advance. Samba problem

Hello, I am trying to learn how to use Samba. I first just want to get it to work, then I'll make it better. I am not concerned about security since everything is on a private network. I am following the material in "CentOS 6 Linux Server Cookbook" by Jonathan Hobson. I am using two virtual computers with Virtual Box running on Fedora 19. Both virtual computers have bridged networking. One virtual computer is Win7, the other is CentOS 6.4. They are both up to date. There is only one user, "admin", on the CentOS virtual computer. The Win7 computer can successfully ping the CentOS computer. My Win7 computer can not see the share on the Samba server. The command "# testparm" shows no errors. Xorg fills up /var/log/Xorg.0.log with AUDIT messages (up to system crash)

Hi, on a CentOS 6.4-workstation we have the problem, that Xorg fills up /var/log/Xorg.0.log with AUDIT messages faster than one can read. Within four hours the logfile grew to 160 MB and usually within 1-2 days applications and sometimes the OS crash because /var becomes full. For sure these messages are associated with "something" the user(s) do, because as soon as nobody is logged in, these messages stop. We have lots of CentOS 6 machines, but this is the only one with such an issue, even though there are more or less the same applications running on all machines. Xorg is running with the following options (CentOS 6 default settings): /usr/bin/Xorg :0 -nr -verbose -audit 4 -auth /var/run/gdm/auth-for-gdm-jQ4DVP/database -nolisten tcp vt1 Questions: * How can one find out which processes are responsible for these audit messages? * How can I stop auditing completely? With CentOS 5 Xorg ran with "audit 0" and I was unable to find the place where the audit level is set. * (more generally) What's auditing good/used for anyway? Any hint is appreciated. About Memory mirroring

Greetings, Was wondering if any software exists for mirroring memory across hosts like what drbd does for disks. I am somewhat aware of copying of a VM's memory when a live migration is done. Another query, as I have not seen too many VM migrations, is that what happens to the memory contents such as data yet to be written onto disk, states etc happens when one of the RHCS cluster hosts which is running VM fail: does the cluster restart the machine? An example perhaps would be suppose the VM is running a movie what would the user's experience would be. I tried it on cluster with ctdb. The movie simply restarted. CIFS Share with encrypted credentials

Hi, I have a CIFS share that I mount on a CentOS6.4. Currently I am keeping the password in a regular hidden file, for example /test/.cred with the username and password. the /etc/fstab directive points to that file. for example: //10.0.0.1/share /mnt cifs defaults,credentials=/test/.cred Since this file is readable by the root user, I figured if there might be a way to encrypt this file, and with decrypt this file with a script so the mount will succeed, and then encrypt it again. or maybe there is another way of doing this? any ideas? --- Dolev

installing centos with oos ntfs format drives

greetings. i am going to run a fresh install of centos 6.4 and want to mount 3 partitions of oos that are formatted as ntfs in an oem installed box. if during install, i set up partitions /dev/sda1, /dev/sda2, and /dev/sdb1 as ntfs, will install install ntfs software or will i have to select it later on in installation? also, is it better to mount them under /mnt to keep /media clean? tia. -- peace out. in a world with out fences, who needs gates. tc.hago. g .

Partitionable Raid

Hi, After reading the tutorial at http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/Install_On_Partitionable_RAID1 I have the following question: What should I put instead of splashimage=(hd0,0)/grub/splash.xpm.gz and root (hd0,0) on /etc/grub.conf? Should I leave those lines untouched? If so, how would grub know where to boot from if /dev/sda fails? Or I would need to swap the drives in order to boot properly and then put a new one as /dev/sdb and then add it to the array? Thanks in advance for all the help. Best regards, Eugenio Pacheco

Weird netinstall issue

Hi. The other day I burnt a copy of a CentOS 6.4 64 bit netinstall disc, verified the disc which passed & about a third of the way through the install it informed me that there was no CD in the drive & refused to carry on. So I burnt another & the same thing happened. So using the same disk burner & the same batch of disks, I burnt a copy of a Debian 7.1 netinstall & it installed perfectly. Any thoughts gladly welcome (the CentOS disc was downloaded from the CentOS repos). SysRq over usb serial adapters

I am having trouble sending sysrq commands over USB serial, and I'm not sure what else to check. I have two identical machines, each with usb-to-serial adapters, joined by a null modem adapter. One runs an agetty, the other minicom. I can log in over the agetty as a user and it works as expected, until I try to send a sysrq. To send a break in minicom, I type [Ctrl]+[a] then [f]. Then I type the character [m] to do a test. I expect to see memory information print to screen, or at least show up in dmesg. Instead I only see the letter m on my shell. I'm using 115200, 8N1, VT102. I can echo m > /proc/sysctl-trigger, and dmesg shows that the sysrq was received when initiated via the procfs interface. Login prompt often hangs

Hi all, I have a strong Dell server running RHEL5.5 every now and then the server hangs (SSH access is frozen) and when attemping to login the prompt hangs and after a while the message " can't update CMOS clock from 2 to 47 CIFS VFS No respone for cmd 114 mid 188" only a reboot causes it to work properly again. i tried fsck'ing with no luck. I must say the server does work very hard often, but I was wondering what could be the problem. Thanks! --- Dolev

I am having some problems with hylafax+ on CentOS 5.9 converting files into appropriate tiff files that are faxable; the problem is apparently fixed in ghostscript 9.07. The CentOS repositories currently have ghostscript-8.70-14.el5_8.1.x86_64 I surely appreciate the maintainers of the repositories; can any of you direct me to whom maintains ghostscript on the repository or when 9.07 is planned to be included. I would also like to request that ghostpcl be included, but I am not certain who or how to ask. Thanks for your assistance. Greg Ennis

Intel 10G X520-2 and iscsi storage poor performance

Hi, we have a storageserver (Centos 6.4) with a dualport Intel 10G X520-2 Adapter. A QSan P600Q-D316 Storage is configured with 8*SATA Drives raid 5 for test, connected trought a Cisco UCS 6100 Series Fabric Interconnect 10G Switch. I formated the storage with ext4 defaults, one volume and got r/w rates about 10MB/s some up to 40MB/s .... VERY POOR.... So we returned the storage to our dealer and they tested the hardware and did some IO Meter Test with VMware ESXi 5.1 Server -> virtual Windows 2k8-R2 on the Qsan Storage. The VM did some r/w IO Meter Benchmark up to 1000 MB/Sec. Better. Hardware looks o.k. Than they installed a Windows 2k8-R2 server and attached the QSAN. The r/w speed is about 400-500 MB/s. After that the dealer installed a Centos 6.4 as I did and the r/w performance is back to our results .... up to 40MB/s .... What the hell? Are the default driver and settings so bad? I know and researched a lot of tuning options like buffers, new drivers etc. We did not check that for now, but are'nt there some defalut values and settings which apply as well to be much faster? Or in other words, are some realy simple hints and suggestions to a) debug / find the bottleneck and b) to increase the performance to the same level as windows? erase disk

Hi. I have a CentOS server (a Dell 860) with two drives in it. One is running CentOS 6.4 which I want to keep & the bigger 400GB drive has Debian 7 on it which I want to erase & use for backups. Which is the best way to go about achieving my intended goal? The Debian drive is not mounted when Centos is booted. Any help appreciated. LiveCD issue

Greetings, I am trying to build a Centos 6.4 LiveCD using the config provided per Centos minimal Live kickstart using command: livecd-creator --config=centos-livecd-minimal.ks --fslabel=c6min-live --debug --verbose --cache=ssclone-rpm-cache --logfile=ssclone.log I included rsync, samba and mc in the kickstart file The build succeded in making an iso but the iso fails to boot on KVM based vm and the real hardware with real cd. the error comes from dracut: dracut: FATAL: Don't know how to handle 'root=live:CDLABEL=c6min-live' dracut: Refusing to continue I am almost tearing my hair out on this. to lvm or not to lvm - why/when to use lvm

Hi, I was wondering, why/when it is useful or when should I avoid to use LVM. I think the big advantage of LVMing is if you modify (rezising, ...) disk and filesystem layouts "a lot". Are there any real pros or cons for following situations regarding e.g. management and speed? e.g.: I do have a server system raid for which the disk layout will not change; e.g. /var /usr /home will not change much in size. OR I do have some file storage shares (iscsi raids) up to some TB each on one big storage device. Sometimes (e.g. after a server crash) it is useful to remount the storage to a different server. Should I use LVM on the iscsi storage volumes? Any suggestion and comment is welcome . Regards . Best Practice to remove an ISCSI LVM from a system

Hi, I'd like to know what would be the best way to remove an iscsi lvm storage from a server. (removing all reference to that storage etc.) The storage in question will be reset and reformated and used on a different server; so no LVM export is needed. Do I have to do lvremove ..., vgremove ..., pvremove ... and do an iscsiadm -m node -T ... -p ... -u and iscsiadm -m node -o delete -T ... -p ... in order to achieve that? scanner only works in su mode

Apparently I hadn't done any scanning since my move to centos. hp-scan works for root, but not for me as me. When I try to use xsane, it tells me no device found. When I try to use hp-scan as myself it tells me: error: Unable to locate device hpaio:/usb/Photosmart_C3100_series?serial=CN6ARC321S04KV using SANE backend hpaio:. Please check HPLIP installation. What do I change to make it let me use xsane or hp-scan as myself? Looking for input SELinux/Other & post-commit hooks.

Hi All, I'm looking for input as to how I may restrict some post commit hooks by way of SELinux or some other mechanism. Here's a description of the problem that I need to solve. I have a source code server that support SVN and soon git. The server has no actual users on it and we use CAS with Apache basic authentication to authenticate and authorize users access to the repository. This server mounts two NFS shares, one for the mirror environment for HTTP based installations and another NFS share for our Puppet environment. There is a corresponding source repository and NFS share for each "user" of the system as well as corresponding NFS shares for mirror and puppet. All the content is owned by the user Apache. Each time a user commits scripts are run to check this code out of the source code server and into a respective /mirror/<repotype>/<reponame> /puppet/<repotype>/<reponame> But there are other bits of code that the end user would like to also be able to run, such as generating group information based on the content of a file that was committed manual pruning of some arbitrary data and other things that I don't want to account for in code. Essentially allowing them to extend the system further for their needs. This means that I need to ensure that a user isn't able to run code like rm -rf /etc/password or rm -rf /{mirror,puppet}/* which would essentially ruin everyone's data. What I essentially would like to do is ensure that if someone were to attempt to run any of the third party code that the permissions for that run would be within the context of their own areas so that the most damage they could do is wipe out the content of their /mirror/<repotype>/<reponame> & /puppet/<repotype>/<reponame> while not having to setup and destroy a (potentially) large chroot environment each time the script is run. -- James A. Dual Boot Windows 8 & CentOS 6.4

Hi, I am studying for the RHCSA Exam and wanted to install CentOS 6.4 alongside Windows 8. I got a new laptop with a processor that supports virtualization. I am planning to remove all the recovery partitions after backing up all drivers etc. on them. Lets see how it works out. Any caveats I should know about? Regards adj

I don't want to wait until the timeout kicks in, the init continues and rc.local eventually issues a service network restart. So, I would rather do all the "replace file" operations before any of that init stuff gets done. Is this possible without much ado? Or should I rather do the "replace file" operations at shutdown (how, when?) and execute only the sql command from rc.local? Google suggests a file /etc/rc.shutdown (or rc.local.shutdown?) which, if I understand correctly, would be carried out after the init stuff for the shutdown (rc0) has been done. Kai

x2go (vs. freenx)?

Is anyone using x2go on Centos - and if so, is there any reason to think about switching from freenx? The old NX client for mac was a powerpc binary and is no longer supported under mountain lion - and their new alpha release crashed my mac after an OSX update so I'm curious if there is anything better around. (And I didn't like the way the new mac version changed the screen scaling instead of resizing when you tried to change the window size, but maybe I just didn't know how to do it). -- Les Mikesell lesmikesell(a)gmail.com

Howto: Extremely tight security rsync shell for backups

We've been using rsync since forever to back up all our servers and it's worked without a problem. But in a recent security review, we noted that our specific rsync backup host is using root keys to access the server, meaning that if the keys on the backup server were leaked/compromised in any fashion, that would provide r00t access to the servers being backed up. Since this doesn't seem to be readily documented, I thought I'd provide it to the community. After some playing around, we've found it is possible to set up rsync/ssh so that the connecting server can ONLY run rsync with a predetermined set of options. // OBJECTIVES // 1) Make it so the backup server's SSH key can only be used A) in an rsync read-only. Hello, gpk-update-viewer on my CentOS 6 desktop gives me an error about untrusted updates. When running yum update from a terminal I get the following error: Package chkconfig-1.3.49.3-2.el6_4.1.x86_64.rpm is not signed No other packages seem to be affected so for now I updated excuding chkconfig and ntsysv. Setting up postfix under CentOS-6

I recently, perhaps foolishly, changed over a remote server from sendmail/procmail to postfix/amavis/spamassassin/clamd , and I'm finding it difficult to configure this setup. The CentOS document <http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/postfix> explicitly says that its instructions may not work in CentOS-6. Does anyone know of reasonably simple postfix documentation for CentOS-6? I've been amazed how bad the postfix documentation is. It actually seems to be worse that sendmail documentation, which I thought established a record for this sort of thing. Run one-time startup script

I have to change IP numbers across a number of virtual and physical machines because of network center move. This has to be done before network startup, of course. I'm thinking about the best method to do this. Where should I include/init this script? Or would it rather make more sense to do this on the last shutdown? Changes largely involve removing old files and putting new files in place (resolv.conf, hosts, sysconfig/network + network-scripts, firewall, postfix, httpd etc.). The only other change besides replacing files would be changing the IP address in a webcontrol interface in a MySQL table, so this part has to be done after MySQL startup. Could be run-once or have to disable manually after successful startup. Thanks, Kai
