Hi. I'm seeing a lot of entries in /var/log/audit/audit.log acct=28756E6B6E6F776E207573657229 , which apparently means unknown user . Sample from the logs : type=USER_LOGIN msg=audit(1370998250.746:1622709): user pid=16762 uid=0 auid=4294967295 ses=4294967295 msg='op=login acct=28756E6B6E6F776E207573657229 exe="/usr/sbin/sshd" hostname=? addr=127.0.0.1 terminal=ssh res=failed' How do I track down what is causing this ? Thus far I have has not luck using the pid with ps or lsof as it seems the process has gone by the time I respond to the log entries. Thanks G

I have https console access authenticating admin user through kerberos, and have migrated information on 80+ users and groups to it from a LDAP server. Permissions of mercurial-hgk?

I just installed mercurial-hgk on CentOS 6.4 x86 and the permissions were set so that it couldn't be run by a non-root user. The two files that had incorrect permissions were: /usr/libexec/mercurial/ /usr/libexec/mercurial/hgk Is that an issue with CentOS? Or is it an issue that I should open a bugzilla against RHEL for? ipv6 only kickstart installs

Hi, I have a kvm host and I try to install a centos 6 guest with a static ip address. When I do a manual install I eventually get to the network configuration and if I enter IP, gateway and DNS Server I can ping6 the guest from the host and I can ping6 the guest from outside. I do not want to do manual installation, so I have to specify a url to a kickstart file, but to download it the network must be configured. I try some kernel options noipv4 ipv6=... gateway=... dns=... ks=http… This gets me so far that I can ping6 the guest from the host, but I can not reach it from outside. When I ping from outside I see the guest sending neighbor solicitation requests for the IP I ping from, but this IP is in another network. I think the guest does not get a gateway configured. At least the ipv6 option is working, because I can ping the guest from the host. How do I achieve such a ipv6 only with static network configuration kickstart install? How to specify ipv6 gateway (and possibly dns) -- Markus

Setting up paths etc. for Qt 4 development

Hi, I was just wondering, is there a "correct" or "preferred" way of setting up the path and other environment variables for Qt 4 development/build using qmake and all - on a CentOS 6 system? I mean, this does not work out-of-the box, at least if you have build files that assume "qmake" may be executed just like that - as there is no Qt 4 qmake on the path, although "qmake-qt4" is available. Also, if qt3-devel is installed, and the default path setup is used, "qmake" will point to the Qt 3 version, as the package includes a profile.d file that modify the path in such a way. Which also sets up other Qt related variables, I believe. There is no such file in qt4-devel, however. I know ways to set up everything so that this works as expected, of course, but it would be interesting to know how the packagers intended it to be done. Are you expected to edit login files by hand? That's sort of surprising in this day and age... Or is the thinking that the suffixed ("-qt4") version of commands will always be used? Or that everyone will be using plain make with pkg-config? adaptec RAID

We've got this PC PitStop RAID box (they're so proud of it, there's no logo), and what lspci tells me is an Adaptec AAC-RAID (ref 09) controller. I see there's no F/OSS controllers for it, but when I go to Adaptec's site, the search denies all knowledge of such a controller. I'd like to get the correct one, and I really want an x86_64 version; googling found me a 386 rpm. Anyone know how to identify what *Adaptec* calls this thing, so I can find the info I need on their site? mark

Repair grub GPT/UEFI?

What does it take to make a disk bootable on a system with UEFI and a GPT on the boot disk? I used a default disk layout in the initial install on a 600Gb drive (on a box that also contained a larger raid). and it used a GPT. ReaR won't work to back up/restore this system, complaining about the UEFI. I cloned the drive to a different server with clonezilla-live which completed without errors but it won't boot. I booted an install disk in rescue mode, did a chroot to /mnt/sysimage and everything looked OK. A 'grub-install /dev/sda' did not give any errors and I can now get it to boot to the grub> prompt. Had an issue today with a bus error, and googling only found two year old references to problems with non-Dell drives (we just added two WD Reds, and mdadm raided them). Link for Logical Volume has incorrect SE Linux context

Hi A few days ago we rebooted a server and found that one of the Logical Volumes would not mount at boot, but mounted cleanly manually. So I traced the problem to SE Linux. Specifically the context for /dev/mapper/VolGroup01-lv_ staff is wrong. s -lsahZ /dev/mapper/VolGroup01-* lrwxrwxrwx. root root system_u:object_r:quota_db_t:s0 /dev/mapper/VolGroup01-lv_staff -> ../dm-25 lrwxrwxrwx. root root system_u:object_r:device_t:s0 /dev/mapper/VolGroup01-lv_student -> ../dm-24 I have tried to correct this with the Logical Volume active and mounted using chcon -v --reference /dev/mapper/VolGroup01-lv_student /dev/mapper/VolGroup01-lv_staff and while this command completes the context is not changed. Can someone confirm or deny that making the Logical Volume inactive and then repeating the chcon should change the link to the correct context? Thanks for any insight you can offer.

Johnny (& other CentOS folks), Am I being fooled by some proxies between me and centos (and all the centos mirrors, which what I normally use), or has the repodata for CentOS 5.9 updates not been updated since 03-Jun-2013 12:08? I was under the impression that the repodata on the main centos servers was updated about the same time as any CentOS-announce message going out, unless I also see a message from one of the admins indicating an issue, so I am very confused. Unable to change runlevel at boot time

Hello, I am running in problem of changing boot mode. My snort script dump packets speedily that I am unable to login as either GUI or CLI I have followed steps Boot Menu options -> pressing e -> kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.32-358.6.1.el6.x86.64 ro root=UUID=ac176b7b-cbbf--> then press e-> <TYPE=pc KEYTABLE=us rd_NO_DM rhgb quiet radeon.modeset=0 when I try to change 0 to 1,3,5 it reverts to 0. Size limitations in .htaccess

Also, if I hit the max length on a "Deny From" line, can I add another "Deny From" line? KVM console?

I finally got access to some machines with more resources than the free VMware ESXi license allows which pushed me into trying kvm instead. Seems capable enough for what I need and can even import and run the existing vmdk images I already have. But, I have some questions about accessing the virt-manager console remotely for initial configuration, etc.. Normally I use freenx for remote GUI access and it seems to work except that on the Windows guest I tried the cursor position never stays in sync. Are there better ways to get remote access to the GUI or centralize access to a group of KVM servers? Or do most people automate the VM setup to the point where they don't need console access until it is up on the network where you can connect directly to the guest? -- Les Mikesell lesmikesell(a)gmail.com

Question on detect serial ports

I have a small based atom machine. There are four serial ports on the machine. dmesg | grep tty shows 0, 1, 2 and 3. 2 and 3 are on interrupt 10 -and they worked. going into the BIOS COM ports 0 and 1 are also on IRQ 10 and not the standard 3,4. BIOS cannot set anything but IRQ 10, 11 for serial ports. Odd... So COM 0 and 1 dont work right away... I had to put this in the boot script. setserial /dev/ttyS1 irq 10 port 0x2e8 setserial /dev/ttyS0 irq 10 port 0x3e8 now they seem to work. I have no idea why the bios will not have IRQ 3 and 4 for com ports but I was surprised linux did not inquire from the bios and use it. Should it get that from the BIOS - or - just leave the manual setting and move on... jerry

XFS zero length file problem

we're running into a scenario similar to this with CentOS 6, zero length files after a system crash. http://oss.sgi.com/archives/xfs/2012-02/msg00607.html I'm not exactly sure which kernel version they are running in production (its in China), but I'm trying to find out. its probably a year or so old, our manufacturing operations folks do NOT like installing random updates without very good reasons. meanwhile, I wonder if anyone familiar with it knows if the fix that Dave Chinner discusses in that posting I link above has been backported to a recent EL6 kernel. -- john r pierce 37N 122W somewhere on the middle of the left coast

I am getting this error when trying to access a virtual website index by ip address and port on a host that has SELinux disabled (another issue over which I have less control than I wish): curl http://192.168.6.9:41780 | more Gives this error in /var/log/httpd/error_log [Mon Jun 10 09:04:44 2013] [error] [client 192.168.6.9] Directory index forbidden by Options directive: /tftpboot/ and displays the default Centos/Apache server page instead of the list of files in the directory. This virtual host is defined thus: Listen 192.168.6.9:41780 <VirtualHost 192.168.6.9:41780> DocumentRoot "/tftpboot" <Directory "/tftpboot"> allow from all Options +Indexes </Directory> </VirtualHost> If I specify a known file within /tftpboot then that file's contents are displayed properly. Issue tracker question: Can I delete/replace an attachment?

Hi. I recently uploaded a file to a certain issue in the CentOS issue tracker. I then found it wasn't quite correct, so I edited it, then tried "Upload file" again, with the same filename, but got a message saying: APPLICATION ERROR #9 This is a duplicate file. Please delete the file first. Please use the "Back" button in your web browser to return to the previous page. There you can correct whatever problems were identified in this error or select another action. You can also click an option from the menu bar to go directly to a new section. I can't find a way to "delete the file first", though. Is this possible? Force to strip all symbols from ELFs when using rpmbuild on CentOS

Hello. What's the proper way to remove *all symbols* from ELF binaries when building packages with rpmbuild on CentOS? Seems that an out of the box rpmbuild install only discards debugging symbols (strip -g). That's the default configuration for %__os_install_post on CentOS, the step in charge on stripping binaries: $ rpmbuild --showrc (..) -14: __os_install_post %{_rpmconfigdir}/brp-compress %{_rpmconfigdir}/brp-strip %{_rpmconfigdir}/brp-strip-static-archive %{_rpmconfigdir}/brp-strip-comment-note ELF binaries are stripped with /usr/lib/rpm/brp-strip, this script explicitly calls to /usr/bin/strip with "-g" flag and discards only debugging symbols. Seems that the people usually installs "redhat-rpm-config" package to achieve this. Indeed it builds RPMs with all symbols removed, but it also installs some helper scripts and macros that change other behaviors, for example SRPMs are signed with SHA-256. When "redhat-rpm-config" package is installed, %__os_install_post variable is modified and find-debuginfo.sh is executed, this script will remove all symbols, but it will *also* build "-debug" packages, and that's not what I'm looking for. For the moment, I have have added another script to %__os_install_post step that removes all symbols using "strip --strip-all", but I wonder if this is the most straightforward method, thanks. Hello CentOS Community, So I bought a NIC (using the Intel 82579V chipset) that supports Dual RX and TX queues , my goal with that is so iam able to see and use two IRQs in /proc/interrupts and hence be able to take advantage of 2 cores on my CPU. Instead I only see one IRQ being used, and hence only one CPU core.. Please see below. Advisement is appreciated! RHEL clone distributions being marginalized?

It appears that Redhat is starting to offer newer packages as an add on license to their distribution. In the past I believe they only offered add on license packages beyond what did not come with the base distribution like GFS or the HA packages. Of course this has also changed over time. The latest beta release of software collections and the developer suite shows that they are providing software channels that install newer versions of GCC(4.8), Python(2.7, 3.3), PHP, perl, mariadb, etc. I'm wondering if at some point Redhat is going to remove these packages from the base distribution and only have them as add on licensed channels. I guess they still need a baseline version that will stay the same for the customers who refuse to update for compatibility reasons. At this point the developer suite is a pretty good deal because you get RHEL server with most of the licensed add on channels for only $99 a year. However, you're not suppose to use it for production.. Is there a plan for the CentOS group to release these newer packages too? If these packages start being used by developers and required to run their programs/web apps I think it could marginalize RHEL clone distributions like CentOS. David.

IPv4 192.168.71.1 'leaks out onto WAN.

Arch = x86_64 OS = CentOS-6.4 (centos) with all updates applied to date. On our gateway host eth0 is the WAN access and eth1 is the LAN. I wish to activate the address 192.185.71.1 on eth1. The ifcfg-eth1:192071 file contains this: NAME="" BOOTPROTO=none MACADDR="" IPV6INIT=no DEVICE=eth1:192071 NETMASK=255.255.255.0 MTU="" BROADCAST=192.168.71.255 ONPARENT=no IPADDR=192.168.71.1 NETWORK=192.168.71.0 ONBOOT=no When I try ifup to activate the address then I see this: # ifup eth1:192071 Error, some other host already uses address 192.168.71.1. I investigated what that host could be using nmap -v -APn 192.168.71.1/32 and discovered that my gateway host is allowing 192.168.71.0 out through eth0 onto the WAN (and presumably anything else that it originates). Presently we masquerade 192.168.0.0/16 in a NAT POSTROUTING chain which handles the internal hosts seeking addresses on the WAN. However, I am unsure of how to handle the gateway itself. Is this situation best handled by a permanent route reflecting 192.168 to eth1 only? Or, is it handled better by an addition to the OUTPUT chain in the NAT IPTable? Facebook group needs help with newbie member questions

Hi all. A represent Official CentOS group on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/2371797727/ Recently we have grown to 3.240+ members, and it looks like we are now more visible since we reached 3000+ members. In last 7 days we had 131 new members ~19 per day, mostly newbie's with problems. Since I am only active admin/knowledgeable person in the group, I am under big load. Karanbir and Ralph try to help, but I am mostly alone "out there" So if any of you are willing to answer to newbie questions and maybe add to our howto documents, you are more then welcome. Be warned that it is imperative to be polite to them, since Facebook users are more spoiled then others, but I think it is one of the best way to popularize CentOS among the newbie population that is deciding what distro to choose for it's main distro. Just sending them to wiki, forums or here is not really an option since most of them will not bother with registering, they would most likely just find some inadequate howto on the net, mainly not even for rpm distro but explaining how to manually download and compile packages :-/ Again, I believe that grooming newbie's on Facebook can be great for CentOS popularization, since General Linux group has 36.000+ members (and 244 new members in last 7 days at the moment). Two issues: first, I've noticed a number of times that selinux is there, which we usually have in permissive, but setroubleshoot is *not* installed. Is there be some kind of dependency or group that it should be part of that's missing? I don't see why I need to manually install it.... Second - and I thought I knew the answer to this, but guess I don't - I see AVC's in the log file, but no sealerts - how do I start it up to give me them in messages? I see auditd is running.... mark

Network performance issue on CentOS 6 KVM

Hi All, I am using CentOS 6.4 on 4 servers, guests are also CentOS 6.4 Network is setup using virtio, and vhost, this works well but sometime I see connection issue from application to DB. I found that sometimes latency increases from 0.200 ms approx to 123ms or even more sometimes, this happens only for 1-2 packets but keep happening after sometime. CPU load remains under 1, CPU usages is around 20-30%. If I ping from host machine to host machine then there is consistent latency, this only happens when ping from a guest machine to either other guest machines or a host machine. Did anyone face similar issue?

Hey all, i am fighting with a strange behavior here - i have two systems connected via a direct crosslink wire. After booting, the connection is up and both systems can reach the other one. Samba4 and NVSv4

Short story: cannot get Kerberized NFSv4 to work. I've googled a great deal and cannot find where I have goofed (and there sure is a lot of misleading and just plain incorrect information out there), so would appreciate another pair of eyes. NFSv4 without Kerberos does work fine, as does ID mapping. We're using NFSv4 in production with sec=sys, but I'm not happy with that. My kerberized NFSv4 attempts are on a separate test cluster. Longer story (sorry for the length): All servers and clients are CentOS 6.4 with kernel 2.6.32-358.6.2.el6 and nfs-utils 1.2.3-36.el6; patches are up to date. NFSv4 servers are x86_64, clients are both x86_64 and i686. Two DC's are both i686, running Samba 4.0.5 with bind 9.91 + bind_dlz. Replication is good. All CentOS systems use sssd only and no winbind; this is also working (kinit, sudo, ssh, etc all good). Samba is at 3.6.9 on all systems except for the DC's. Samba4 works; DNS works; Kerberos works; NFSv4 works with sec=sys. I joined the clients to the domain ("TITAN.TEST.CORNELL.EDU") with: # net ads join -U Administrator ... # net ads testjoin and created the nfs service principals (on the client and NFSv4 server) with: # net ads keytab add nfs -U Administrator This all works. The NFSv4 server exports with sec=sys:krb5 (and as I said, NFSv4 works fine without krb5, so I believe the exports file to be correct). But when I try to mount, I get the catch-all error: # mount -t nfs4 -o sec=krb5 costello.test.cornell.edu:/data /mnt/tmp mount.nfs4: access denied by server while mounting costello.test.cornell.edu:/data and in /var/log/messages on the same client: Jun 5 17:11:13 abbott rpc.gssd[1439]: Success getting keytab entry for 'nfs/abbott.test.cornell.edu(a)TITAN.TEST.CORNELL.EDU' Jun 5 17:11:13 abbott rpc.gssd[1439]: WARNING: Client 'nfs/abbott.test.cornell.edu(a)TITAN.TEST.CORNELL.EDU' not found in Kerberos database while getting initial ticket for principal 'nfs/abbott.test.cornell.edu(a)TITAN.TEST.CORNELL.EDU' using keytab 'FILE:/etc/krb5.keytab' Jun 5 17:11:13 abbott rpc.gssd[1439]: ERROR: No credentials found for connection to server costello.test.cornell.edu With tcpdump I can see that the DC is contacted during the mount, but the NFSv4 server is not. The log files on the NFSv4 server are silent. I have tried (everything was restarted between tests); "no change" means that it still does not work and gives the same exact errors: - verified that /etc/idmapd.conf on all systems has the same domains and realms. This works anyway with sec=sys. - reduced the keytab to the DES enctypes for nfs/... on all systems; no change. - used "allow_weak_crypto=true" in /etc/krb5.conf; no change. - set default_tgs_enctypes and default_tkt_enctypes to "des-cbc-md5 des-cbc-md4 des-cbc-crc" in /etc/krb5.conf; no change. - tried adding the service principals on the DC with "samba-tool spn add" instead of "net ads keytab add" on the client, and then exporting the keytab to the client; no change. - add the SPN "nfs/abbott.test.cornell.edu(a)TITAN.TEST.CORNELL.EDU" and "nfs/abbott(a)TITAN.TEST.CORNELL.EDU" in case the missing realm was a factor; no change. - started rpc.gssd on the clients with the -l switch; no change. - started rpc.svcgssd with the -n switch so that nfs/ service principals are in theory not required; no change. I do not understand why rpc.gssd canot find the service principal, when it does exist in the database. I've probably missed out some other things that I have tried to no effect. Help! xhost + via Desktop centos 6.3 not working

Hello list, In the past we have instructed users to perform 'xhost +' from their centos desktop, then set the DISPLAY variable on a remote computer to forward their display back to the desktop. This does not seem to work on centos 6 - but it did work in centos 5. It works from a vnc session on the desktop machine, but does not work from the local desktop. We would typically use a display variable like this: export DISPLAY=163.198.177.218:0.0 - The target system acts like the request is being refused: Error: Can't open display: 163.198.177.218:0.0 Have there been any changes in centos 6 which make xhost + behave differently for the desktop session? We've been struggling with this issue now for some time - can't find the right solution. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks in advance, William

ssh -Y X-forwarding?

On rare occasions I want to run a remote X command (like 'meld' to interactively merge changes in files) and normally 'ssh -Y remote_host' from a terminal in an NX/freenx window that is acting as my desktop to start and any X program subsequently started would open in a new window via X-forwarding - at least when the target is a 5.x host. I don't do it often enough to remember if it ever worked when the remote side is 6.x, but today it is not setting the $DISPLAY variable, so I get: Error: Can't open display: Using -vv shows it at least trying to go through the motions: debug2: x11_get_proto: /usr/bin/xauth list :1420.0 2>/dev/null debug1: Requesting X11 forwarding with authentication spoofing. debug2: channel 0: request x11-req confirm 0 debug2: client_session2_setup: id 0 debug2: channel 0: request pty-req confirm 1 debug1: Sending environment. debug1: Sending env LANG = en_US.UTF-8 debug2: channel 0: request env confirm 0 debug2: channel 0: request shell confirm 1 debug2: fd 3 setting TCP_NODELAY But, $DISPLAY is not set to anything. centos 6' repositories against redhat 6 upstream

Hi Wonder how's the relationship between the centos 6's main OS/ repository and redhat 6's repositories. Let's say, Redhat 6 seperate RPMs into a series of repos like: redhat-6-server ##(base redhat 6 OS/) redhat-6-server-optional redhat-6-server-supplementary redhat-6-server-rhev-agent rhel-6-server-cf-tools ... Does centos 6 merge all the redhat 6 repos into one big repository? or still leave out some minor/functional ones? If the second is true, then it will be great if we can find the repo mapping link between Redhat 6 and centos 6. Thanks a lot. --Rob
