security breach - ftp?

Hi, I'm running Plesk 11.0.9 on a Centos 5.5. A website on that box got hacked last week and malicious code got inserted into some html/php files. So I went to find out what happened... I found no back doors by using rkhunter or manually searching for suspicious files in /tmp, etc. No activity at all in the php logs at the time of the attack. I also analysed of course the system logs (messages, secure, ...) - nothing that I could see either - except for an entry of an successful login to that domain via FTP just before the the modified dates of the infected files. I found one of the oldest infected files were in the folder of a hopelessly outdated version of a WYSIWYG editor and decided to blame that due to probability. So in order to recover I did in this order... * delete httpdocs from the website * change the FTP password * upgrade and update Plesk from 10.0.4 to 11.0.9 * upgrade php to php53 via plesk - this also updates mysql and phpmyadmin * yum update everything, also made sure I have the latest version of proftp * restore the entire website from a clean backup * delete the WYSIWYG folder that I believed had caused the vulnerability The next days I slept ok hoping I removed the attacker's entry point(s). ...so I thought! Today the website got hacked again - the same exploit on the pages, meaning same attacker. NIC interrupts and packets per second ratio, how to calculate? There must be some way...

Hello again guys, Iam trying to asses the best hardware for a machine that procceses a high number of packets per second on its NIC. THe only way I can achieve this without guesses is If iam able to understand or test what the number of interrupts available per core and how to translate that to PPS capabilities. So far ive been testing an Core I5 CPU and was able to achieve up to 400k packets (small syn packets) in a single core (2.8Ghz i think..) untill the point where 100% was reported to serve as hardware interrupts, yet what is the math behind this? In any case, i find this rather low and confused as I know for a fact that small home routers even on gigabit have specs that detail they can do packet forwarding at rates up to 1.4 million pps and iam sure there CPU is no where as powerfull as a 2.8Ghz Core I5 core. Any orientation is much appreciated. Alex

6.4 on old PC not connecting

On an old server (Dell PowerEdge SC1420, now without RAID) I have CentOS 6.4 installed, up, and running -- but it keeps failing to connect for some reason .... NetworkManager applet 0.8.1 runs blue rings around in the panel for a while, then reports itself disconnected. It also offers a pseudo-choice, if I right-click, between Wired Connection and eth0; in fact, the cable to the router is the only connection the machine has or has ever had. I've tried such things as I could find to get a connection, in vain. I've tried replacing the cable. If there's a good fix, I'd like to get my wife running CentOS, because it's one obvious choice for her to have against such time as I'm gone. (I don't at all claim to be the Oldest Subscriber, but I am at an age such that I would be irrational not to plan for such contingencies.) TPM and secure boot

has anyone implemented any sort of 'secure boot' using TPM 1.2 modules on the server boards using CentOS 6.x ? I'm not finding much concrete stuff on how to setup and manage a system like this, but I've been asked to research it for a security application internally at my job. our primary application for the TPM is for client authentication certificates in an SSL application (the machine with the TPM is an unmanned embedded client, that accesses webservices on a remote server which needs to authenticate this client). We've already done similar client authentication using USB Tokens, but would like to use TPM for this in the future. I think the client authentication part is pretty straight forward, using Trousers and so forth and PKCS#11 to access the keys. Once we get the client authentication side working, we'd like to also secure the OS itself to prevent tampering, presumably using trusted grub and such? is this typically used in conjunction with disk encryption such that the TPM module supplies the decryption keys? does linux have any concept of signed executables, kernel, and so forth? would replacing the RPM keys with keys signed by our own certificate authority such that the TPM would be involved in RPM authentication be practical? (yes, I know, this would mandate using a private yum repository, and building/signing all our own system components). I posted this to the Jitsi users mailing list on Thursday last and have received no replies. Does anyone here have any idea of what is causing this and how to fix it? One other bit of information. When I first installed Jitsi it initially worked for a non-privileged user as I ran it from the gnome menu of my login account. However, at some point it seemed get 'confused' and hung. Since then I have been unable to get it to run as a non-privileged user. I have removed and reinstalled it. I have also rebooted the host. F18: Create a USB install of CentOS 6 from iso

Hi all, On a F18, I installed livecd-tools-18.15-1 I downloaded CenOS6.x minimal .iso and with livecd-iso-to-disk the resulting USB is never bootable: the computer doesnt boot on it. Tested on many computers. The fact is I succeded to install CentOS on a Netbook (no CD/DVD tray), but I dont remember how I invoked livecd-iso-to-disk. I tried with many combinations (/dev/sdc is the USB pendrive): 1°) $ sudo livecd-iso-to-disk --format --force <ISO> /dev/sdc 2°) $ sudo livecd-iso-to-disk --format --force <ISO> /dev/sdc1 3°) - Format with VFAT on partiion #1 then $ sudo livecd-iso-to-disk <ISO> /dev/sdc1 4°) - Format with Ext on partiion #1 then $ sudo livecd-iso-to-disk <ISO> /dev/sdc1 ... N°) I dont remember what I tried, but it was many, mostly tried with CentOS 6.2 Please, if someone has a F18 + an USB drive: would you test and see if you succed? device in use after a reboot

Hello, I have a server with an 17tb scsi-storage. In past, the storage has a "jfs"-filesystem. Now i want to create a "ext4"-filesystem. I have update the e2fsprogs from 1.41 to 1.42 (16tb limit >1.41). Now I have an 17tb-storage as /dev/sda1 with ext4. I can mount this device as /home/ (/etc/fstab "/dev/sda1 /home/ ext4 defaults 1 2". Now I start a e2fschk /dev/sda1 (umounted). No error-messages are in the screen. If I now reboot the server, the server does not started: <---// Checking filesystems /dev/md2: clean, ..... /dev/md0: clean, ..... /dev/sda1 is in use. e2fsck: Cannot continue, aborting. *** An error occurred during the file system check. *** Dropping you to a shell; the system will reboot *** when you leave the shell. Give root password for maintenance (or type Control-D to continue): //---> I think thats can be a problem with the e2fsprogs 1.42, now i reinstall the server with the default e2fsprogs 1.41 from CentOS 6.4 and create only a 16tb /dev/sda1 partition with ext4. But if i start a "e2fschk /dev/sda1" and reboot the server, i have the same message in the boot-screen and the server does not boot. Why the system thinks that the device still be in use? python-pandas 10

Anyone familiar with building python modules? We've got a user who needs pandas 10 - he says that there was a memory handling issue that kills him in the lower releases. My counterpart (the humanoid one <g>) says that it seems to want to build against python 2.7, rather than the CentOS 2.6.6. Plus, of course, there are the dependencies.... 1. Are there any tarball installs? 2. Alternatively, are there any src rpms? I haven't found any so far.... Thanks in advance. mark

Slightly OT: Samsung Chromebook

I'm thinking of buying a Samsung Chromebook, largely for use while travelling. But I'd like to use it at home linked to my CentOS-6.4 server, rather than to the cloud. I'm wondering if this is practicable? I use LaTeX quite a lot, and I don't know if I could (a) download LaTeX to the Chromebook, (b) run LaTeX on the cloud, or (c) run LaTeX on my server from the Chromebook. Shell Scripting Random Delay

I have a shell script that's run every 5 minutes I use to call many other shell scripts. Is there a way to wait a random number of seconds before executing each line? Something like this. wait_random 10 - 180 (perl /scripts/my_script.pl) & wait_random 10 - 180 (perl /scripts/my_script5.pl) & wait_random 10 - 180 (perl /scripts/my_script7.pl) & I have many entries in this file and I background them all because most must poll network devices which can take time. None should take over 2 minutes though. When I run them all at once they bog the system and cause some of latency graphs on equipment being monitored to look poor.

Q: What is the recommended method to obtain Pan 0.136+ (with SSL) for Centos 6? I've been successfully using Pan 0.135 from the RPMForge repository for about a year now: $ yum --noplugins --showduplicates --enablerepo \* --disablerepo c6-media,\*-source,\*debug\* provides "*/pan" ==> 1:pan-0.135-1.el6.rf.x86_64 : The Pan Newsreader ==> Repo : installed $ sudo yum --enablerepo rpmforge install pan -y ==> Package 1:pan-0.135-1.el6.rf.x86_64 already installed and latest version For a good reason (native SSL support), I'm interested in testing out Pan version 0.136 (or above). So, the question arises, how 'best' to find and install Pan 0.136 (or above)? A search at http://rpm.pbone.net failed to find any RPM for 0.136 or above: http://www1.picturepush.com/photo/a/12878464/img/12878464.png But I do find the later Pan RPMs in later Fedora releases: http://pkgs.org/download/pan (e.g., Fedora 17 & 18 have later RPMs): http://www5.picturepush.com/photo/a/12878508/img/12878508.png Or, I can compile Pan version 0.139 from source code: http://pan.rebelbase.com/download/ Given these seem to be my choices (and, given that only about half my compiles ever work); may I ask first the basic question: Q: What is the recommended method to obtain Pan 0.136+ (with SSL) for Centos 6?

still no centos 6.4 live cd dvd available?

Hello, in the release announcement for centos 6.4 on march 9th, the 6.4-live cd/dvd was supposed to be released a few days after the centos 6.4 release. Meanwhile 6 weeks later i still can't find any live cd/dvd in the mirror repositories. Any hint when there is a 6.4. live cd available? I'd like to test centos 6.4 on several machines (x86_64) without foregoing installation. Thank you in advance

CentOS 6.4 Samba 3.6.9 Regression

Anyone know the reason RHEL bumped Samba from 3.5.10 to 3.6.9? This version has a regression with BackupExec and Veeam backing up to network shares. I receive access denied errors. Samba is in security=user mode and not joined to a domain. If I downgrade just the Samba packages to the CentOS 6.3 version 3.5.10 everything works again. Looking for a CentOS-friendly online backup company

Hi all. We've got a lot of customers running CentOS 5 and 6 servers. We've been asked by many to provide backup, which is something we don't want to do in house. So we started looking for backup companies to partner with. The problem is that the ones we've found who support RHEL won't support CentOS. So does anyone know of an online backup company that _will_ support CentOS (and Windows)? That said, it's a service our clients are (strongly) asking for. We're not looking for a company to simply recommend, but one to partner with or become a reseller of. cifs mount desktop icon

Hi, I am mounting a Windows share on /media/%(USER)/mountpoint via pam_mount and I would like to show the volume desktop icon for every user logged in. The thing is that it works only for the first user that gets logged, when another user logs in, the desktop icon is missing, but the share mount works just fine if you navigate through the /media directory. The share is the same for all the users, but each user mounts it with its own privileges. Could it be something related to the name of the share being the same each time? Is there a way to fix it? Hi All. I've found: This directory (and version of CentOS) is depreciated. For normal users, you should use /6/ and not /6.3/ in your path. Supermicro & Boot Failures with DVD Centos 6.2

Eve.8ryone, I have had a SuperMicro machine running Centos 5.8 that had been progressively updated with yum-cron from a 5.0 CD install. I upgraded the SuperMicro with more memory, switched out the CD with a DVD and tried to boot to the Centos x64 6.2 dvd. My plan was to test the memory before I added the hard drives, but I could not I could not get the machine to boot from the disc. I also tried some Fedora install discs as well as LiveFedora and the machine would still not boot. I could get it to boot with a dreaded Microsoft install disc. We also updated the bios with the latest version and this did not make a difference. We have not tried to use these disks with the hard drives installed yet because we were in the process of just testing the memory. Has anyone had this problem with SuperMicro's. Is the problem as simple as a requirement to have a hard disc installed. Your help would be appreciated. Thank you, Greg Ennis

Trying to justify CentOS vs. RHEL

Hi all, I'm in the process of moving all of my RHEL systems over to CentOS but the argument that fires back at me is for critical vulnerabilities for items such as zero-day exploits and such. >From what I've been reading, RHEL releases critical patches much quicker than CentOS which makes sense since CentOS is simply a copy and when changes occur they propagate down to the RHEL clones. My question is what kind of time frame are we looking at when a vulnerability (critical or high) is announced and a patch has been released for RHEL does it get implemented into CentOS? Thanks! ECC memory errors

Is there any possibility this could be a kernel issue and upgrading would help, or would upgrading at this point just cause more trouble? * Is there now a possibility that my data can get corrupt: should I shutdown the server as soon as possible or can I keep running until I replace the memories? * This server has been running for several years in a datacenter without problems: what are your experiences, are these kind of problems most likely caused by a failing motherboard or the memories? dual head on centos 5 and ancient Nvidia Quadro NVS280SD card

I was just handed a 2nd monitor for my system at work, and using Centos 5 (latest) can't make dual head work. a good bit of googling isn't being particularly helpful either. It's a HP workstation xw4100, with Nvidia Quadro NVS280SD graphics card. Enabling dual head in the "display" app simply configures X so that it (i.e., X) won't start. I haven't found the x log file in /var/log to be helpful, either. This is using the legacy 96.x.x driver from Nvidia. the NvidiaDetect app (from epel) says it should be using a newer driver than the 96.x.x (forgot which one, exactly) but when attempting to install it I get a msg that the card requires a 96.x.x driver. browsing to nvidia.com and entering the model numbers into their driver finder app gives another newer version that also gives the same result. So it looks like I'm stuck with the 96.x.x driver. some googling indicates a few people have made it work, but none of their methods are working for me. I was beginning to wonder if the hardware even supported dual head, so I booted up a Fedora 17 LIVE CD. it initializes both monitors with no action from me at all, with a desktop spanning the two screens, just fine. It must be using the Nouveau driver (which, AFAIK, can't be used on Centos 5), so still the issue could either be spanning/dual head doesn't work with the ancient nvidia driver, or we (neither me, nor the tools on Centos) knows how to configure it. A junior administrator of mine mistakenly created a mailbox with an empty name, by typing into cyradm the commands: createmailbox user/$lb setquota user/$lb 10000 He will of course shortly receive an extra lesson on shell variables, but meanwhile I find myself confronted with the problem how to get rid of the mailbox he created. Strange Postfix problem

Hello, Was trying to setup postfix on my home PC. Running Centos 6.4. I don't have a static IP and use zoneedit and ddclient to keep my installation of zoneminder current. So I decided I wanted to get zoneminder to send me email alerts. Sent some test messages but none were sent. I went to webdnstools website thinking maybe there is a dns or network problem. When it checks my dns setup, everything is fine except the mail server is has the wrong IP address. The A record and the www A record have the correct IP. The IP address its reporting is one that belongs to my ISP. TIA

unprivileged users rebooting at console

I'm curious why any user logged in at the console can issue the 'reboot' command and reboot the system. I've tested/verified this to work, and read some older posts about this. If it were a bug, I suspect it would be fixed by now. Also, if a user is logged into the console, and then logs in via ssh from another system, that user can also reboot the system from that ssh connection. It would seem that once a user authenticates on the console, and remains on the console, they can reboot from any other/new tty. Once they drop off the console, the ssh connections can no longer reboot. If this is by design, why? Thanks! CentOS 5 netinstall problem

Hi, all. I'm attempting to install CentOS 5 via netinstall from <mirror.centos.org/centos/5/os/i386> & it gets as far as formatting the disk but when it gets to: 'Starting install process. This may take take several minutes...' it hangs forever (well, a couple of hours). Dropping down in a console I see it's telling me: 'Preparing to install' then nothing. 'top' shows activity for Anaconda but very little. This is on an old Poweredge 650 with 3GB's of RAM on a secondary drive. The primary drive has CentOS 6.4 running on it quite happily so the hardware's up to it. I chose to install the 'Server GUI' packages because I was curious. Maybe herein lies my problem? Any help appreciated. Problem with D-BUS Centos 6.4

Hello, I hope anyone at the list could help me... I like to open a notify by using "/usr/bin/notify-send" in my .procmailrc. Should show a notify if a new mail arrive. My script which creates that notify-send is working and if I test it everything works fine. So I inserted it into my .procmailrc, i looks like that: | perl /opt/sbin/mailnotify.pl I like to grep my mail into my script which creates the notify-send... If procmail triggers that script this messages comes up into the logfile of procmail: --- process 6975: D-Bus library appears to be incorrectly set up; failed to read machine uuid: Failed to open "/var/lib/dbus/machine-id": Permission denied See the manual page for dbus-uuidgen to correct this issue. D-Bus not built with -rdynamic so unable to print a backtrace --- OK..I searched in the internet about that problem and found out that: http://www.torkwrench.com/2011/12/16/d-bus-library-appears-to-be-incorrectl… But if i do that and insert: "dbus-uuidgen > /var/lib/dbus/machine-id" this is not the solution of my problem...the same happens again. so my question: could anyone tell my what I do wrong? -- thanks + bye ajh
